Adults of the firefly Photinus pyralis exhibit reflex bleeding when tactually stimulated. Bleeding occurs along the elytral and pronotal margins and around the antennal sockets. The blood, which is discharged from a series of pits with weak underlying cuticle, coagulates very rapidly. The viscid blood is an effective deterrent against invertebrate predators such as ants. Lizards reject adults of P. pyralis probably because pungent and bitter constituents in the blood render these beetles unpalatable. These results are discussed in terms of the defensive mechanisms of lampyrid adults.  相似文献

Animal courtship signals include many highly conspicuous traits and behaviors, and it is generally assumed that such signals must balance the benefits of attracting mates against some fitness costs. However, few studies have assessed the multiple costs potentially incurred by any one courtship signal, so we have limited understanding of the relative importance of different costs. This study provides the first comprehensive assessment of signal costs for Photinus fireflies (Coleoptera: Lampyridae), using controlled experiments to measure both the energy and predation costs associated with their bioluminescent courtship signals. We measured energy required to generate bioluminescent flashes, using differential open-flow respirometry, and found that flash signaling results in only a nominal increase in energy expenditure above resting levels. These results suggest that the energy required to generate bioluminescent flashes represents a minor component of the total cost of firefly courtship. However, controlled field experiments revealed that visually oriented predators imposed major costs on firefly courtship signals, with higher signaling rates significantly increasing the likelihood of predation. Together with previous results demonstrating that female fireflies prefer more conspicuous courtship signals, these results support the importance of multiple-receiver communication networks in driving signal evolution.  相似文献

To examine the concept of female courtship summation in Drosophila melanogaster, two experiments previously reported in the literature, the first involving repeated matings of females and the second progressive removal of the males' wings, were repeated. The present results do not convincingly support the concept of female summation of stimuli provided by the males' courtship. The results of the first experiment also refute the idea that low male courtship intensity leads to long courtships. These results also fail to support an earlier suggestion that females summate the sine rather than pulse song component of the males' wing vibration. Instead, the variation in courtship duration appeared to result from the inverse hyperbolic relationship between the male latency to courtship and the subsequent courtship duration. Thus short male latencies led to longer courtship durations. This is interpreted as resulting from a female latency period during which the female is too agitated to receive the male's courtship, and after which she mates upon recognizing the male as conspecific. In addition, very long courtships largely resulted from additional agitation of the female by the male's courtship. Long courtships therefore appear to be an artifact of the experimental situation and the established concept of female courtship summation, which is supposed to explain them, is unnecessary. The implications of this conclusion are discussed.  相似文献

Male Caribbean fruit flies, Anastrepha suspensa (Loew) produce two sounds in sexual contexts, calling songs and precopulatory songs. Calling song occurs during pheromone release from territories within leks and consists of repeated bursts of sound (pulse trains). Virgin female A. suspensa became more active in the presence of recorded calling songs. Activity during the broadcast of a heterospecific song did not differ from movement during periods of silence. A conspecific song typical of smaller males, i.e. conspicuous for its long periods between pulse trains, also failed to elicit more activity by virgin females than silence. Mated females were most active during silences. Unmated males had no obvious reaction to sound. Calling songs are apparently sexually important communications which females discriminate among and may use as cues for locating and/or choosing between mates. Precopulatory song is produced by mounted males just before and during the early stages of copulation. Males that did not produce such songs remained coupled for shorter periods, perhaps passing fewer sperm. Wingless (muted) males were more likely to complete aedeagal insertion if a recorded precopulatory song was broadcast. Calling song played at the same level (90 dB) had no significant effect on the acceptance of males, nor did precopulatory song at a lower SPL (52dB). Precopulatory song may be used to display male vigour to choosing females.  相似文献

Drosophila melanogaster carrying either of the mutations sev or dipp6 show defective phototactic behaviour owing to deficiencies in the processing of visual information perceived by the central retinula cells (R7, R8). Mutant females show increased time to mating because the deficient visual input via this subsystem has an inhibitory effect on female receptivity. Similarly, deficient input through the peripheral retinula cells (R1–R6) also makes females sexually unreceptive. Thus females require appropriate visual stimulation through both subsystems to become maximally sexually receptive. One major source of this stimulation is the red eye of the male.  相似文献

Males of the fly Drosophila melanogaster initially court mated, unreceptive females but later develop an avoidance reaction against them and even become temporally unresponsive to virgin females. This conditioned inhibition has been described as an associative process, the conditioned stimulus being a mixture of pheromones on the female's cuticle. To assess the evolutionary significance of courtship conditioning we recorded and analysed the male's behaviour during the conditioning process. The time traces of individual males were marked by an abrupt behavioural change. The time he spent courting suddenly decreased, and the frequency of ‘turn-away’ events at the same time sharply increased. Thus, the gradual decline of courtship observed as a group average does not reflect a slow change in motivation of the individual male but rather the interindividual differences of an active, experience-guided all-or-none decision to stop courting and to avoid the female. Three recently collected D. melanogaster strains were each maintained under two distinct mating conditions. Males were kept together with females for either ca. 2 weeks or 18 h. After 21 generations males of the two regimes differed markedly in their behaviour towards mated females. With long interaction periods between males and females, selection favoured courtship conditioning, while with short periods no such selection was observed. Slowly recovering receptivity of mated females may be needed for the maintenance of courtship conditioning. Courtship conditioning in D. melanogaster appears to be a fitness-relevant behaviour adapted to high-density populations with females mating a second time.  相似文献

The courtship songs of Drosophila are produced by the male's wing vibration and consist of a series of pulses, with an inter-pulse interval (IPI) of 34 ms for D. melanogaster and 48 ms for D. simulans. The IPI's are not constant in length during courtship, but oscillate sinusoidally with 55-s cycles in the former species and 35-s cycles in the latter. We have stimulated D. melanogaster females with artificially generated courtship songs, and have observed that they mate fastest when the song incorporates a 55-s oscillation superimposed on a 34-ms IPI. D. simulans females, on the other hand, mate fastest with a 48-ms IPI and a 35-s oscillation period. Consequently these newly-discovered song cycles produce significant mating enhancement in these species, with the females showing a preference for songs which carry both the species-specific IPI and the species-specific IPI rhythm.  相似文献

Firefly luciferase is a protein with a large N-terminal and a small C-terminal domain. B-factor analysis shows that its C-terminal is much more flexible than its N-terminal. Studies on hyperthermophile proteins have been shown that the increased thermal stability of hyperthermophile proteins is due to their enhanced conformational rigidity and the relationship between flexibility, stability and function in most of proteins is on debate. Two mutations (D474K and D476N) in the most flexible region of firefly luciferase were designed. Thermostability analysis shows that D476N mutation doesn't have any significant effect but D474K mutation destabilized protein. On the other hand, flexibility analysis using dynamic quenching and limited proteolysis demonstrates that D474K mutation became much more flexible than wild type although D476N doesn't have any significant difference. Intrinsic and ANS fluorescence studies demonstrate that D476N mutation is brought about by structural changes without significant effect on thermostability and flexibility. Molecular modeling reveals that disruption of a salt bridge between D474 and K445 accompanying with some H-bond deletion may be involved in destabilization of D474K mutant.  相似文献

Timing and form of courtship behaviour elements constitute a major isolating mechanism for two morphologically and ecologically similar parasitic wasps. Because males are blind, the complex courtship of Melittobia chalybii and a new as yet undescribed species previously confused with it, designated as M. sp. A, depends upon tactile and chemical cues. In both species, after the female orients to the male's abdomen, the male turns in the direction of contact and mounts. However, chalybii males antennate females continuously, lifting mesothoracic legs at regular intervals, while in sp. A male antennation alternates with metathoracic leg pumping. Courtship and copulation duration are greater in Chalybii than in sp. A.  相似文献

Sex effects on behaviour were investigated by repeatedly mating the same male and female Drosophila melanogaster. Male influence is mainly on percentage wing vibration while females largely determine wing vibration duration and bout number. This courtship pattern is stable across matings involving the same individuals.  相似文献

Courting male fiddler crabs of the species Uca musica terpsichores congregate in the upper central portion of the colony, while receptive females leave their burrows located at the colony's periphery and wander among the communally displaying males prior to choosing a mate. I observed that courting males in a newly-established population were significantly smaller than courting males in large high-density colonies. This observation led to a series of translocation experiments designed to ascertain whether high population density influences the size (=age) at which males begin to court. Smaller courting males from a low-density population failed to court after being placed among larger courting males in a high-density population. The reciprocal translocation revealed that smaller noncourting males from the high-density population would start courting shortly after being placed in a low-density population. Smaller males placed in the high-density population were subsequently observed significantly further away from where they were initially placed than were larger males similarly translocated. The results suggest that smaller males delay courtship activities once they are forced, via encounters with larger males, to the periphery of the colony. I believe that both intrasexual selection (competition from larger males) and intersexual selection (female choice of large males) are responsible for the delay in male courtship activities.  相似文献

Germinoma is a gonadal neoplasm originating from progenitor cells in germinal epithelium. Frequently described in some populations of bivalve molluscs, to our knowledge, germinoma has never been reported in gastropods so far. In this paper we describe the histopathological findings of some atypical cellular masses, originating in the undifferentiated germ cell layer in the male gonads of a limpet (Patella coerulea), whose morphological appearance resembled that of a germ cell tumor. The abnormal, and independent growth with no evidence of maturation of the undifferentiated and atypical germ cells, the limited number of follicles involved (n < 10%) and the absence of tissue invasion, supported a diagnosis of Stage 1 germinoma.  相似文献

Calopteryx maculata and C. dimidiata damselfly females respond to male courtship with specific displays which signal differences in their receptivity. These include a rejection (wing spreading) and an invitation (wing-flipping) display, as well as a neutral (sit still) response. There are interspecific differences in the likelihood of each female display and in male responses to these displays. C. maculata males persist in courtship irrespective of female response, while C. dimidiata males generally stop courting when the female's response is rejection or neutrality. I suggest that these differences result from interspecific differences in oviposition behaviour. Female C. maculata oviposit at the water surface, which exposes them to disturbance by males attempting to mate. Females are therefore likely to remate to secure postcopulatory guarding when changing oviposition sites and males are expected to be persistent in courtship. Female C. dimidiata submerge to oviposit, which frees them from male disturbance and means that males have less control over female access to oviposition sites. Males therefore have less influence on mating by females and are expected not to persist in courtship of non-receptive females.  相似文献

In butterflies where nutrients contributed by males through mating are used by females for egg production and/or somatic maintenance, females may benefit from mating more than once. However, in species where sperm is used only for the fertilization of eggs and the sperm received in one copulation is sufficient for fertilization of all of the eggs, females should benefit from mating only once. In these species the reproductive success of females is likely to be proportional to the time they can allocate to egg-laying activities. Thus these females should be selected to minimize the time spent in an unmated condition, and to minimize time-consuming interactions, like courtship, with males after mating. As shown by spermatophore counts, females of the ringlet butterfly, Aphantopus hyperanthus, generally mate only once. These females exhibit behaviour consonant with the above view: they solicit courtship before copulation and actively avoid males after mating.  相似文献
