 The nephrostome of Enchytraeus albidus exhibits a longitudinal slit-like opening on the dorsal side of a bulbous organ which is mainly composed of three cells, one flame cell situated centrally and endowed with a ciliary flame, and two cells lying superficially, called the mantle cell and the accessory mantle cell. The mantle cell occupies the ventral side of the organ extending on both sides up to the opening to constitute its immediate border on the frontal and lateral sides. Here it forms a kind of crest which is heavily subdivided into many protrusions and infoldings endowed with long cilia which exclusively spread into the coelomic cavity. The accessory mantle cell borders the narrow posterior slit of the opening, forming the roof of the initial canal which is devoid of cilia. From its anterior region a projection arises extending above the opening. The flame cell forms a groove from which the ciliary flame arises which extends into the canal. At its posterior region it replaces the accessory mantle cell displacing it onto the dorsal surface of the organ. It is argued that the mantle cell and the accessory mantle cell have presumbly originated from coelothelial cells. Thus the metanephridium may be a composite organ developing from a nephridioblastic and a coeloblastic source. A discussion of results in other annelid species indicates that metanephridia in the Annelida may have evolved more than once. Accepted: 13 October 1997  相似文献

De Wit P., Erséus C. and Gustavsson L.M. 2011. Ultrastructure of the body wall of three species of Grania (Annelida: Clitellata: Enchytraeidae). —Acta Zoologica (Stockholm) 92 : 1–11. The body wall of three species of Grania, including the cuticle, epidermis and the musculature, are studied using TEM. The cuticle is similar to previously studied enchytraeids, with an orthogonal grid pattern of collagen fibers. This pattern is also seen in Crassiclitellata, which has been suggested as the sister taxon of Enchytraeidae. Variation of epicuticular and fiber zone patterns seen in Naididae (formerly Tubificidae and Naididae) seem to be lacking in Enchytraeidae. The fiber thickness, however, varies between Grania species and may be a phylogenetically informative character. The epidermis consists of supporting cells, secretory cells and sensory cells. Basal cells, typical for Crassiclitellata, were not observed. The clitellum of Grania seems to consist of two types of gland cells, which develop from regular epidermal tissue. It is possible that more cell types exist in different regions of the clitellum, however. The body wall musculature is arranged somewhat differently from that of closely related taxa; this refers to the reduction of circular and outer, triangular longitudinal muscle fibers, while the inner, ribbon‐shaped longitudinal muscle fibers are well‐developed. A search was conducted for the cause of the peculiar green coloration of Grania galbina De Wit and Erséus 2007, and it was concluded that neither cyanobacteria nor epidermal pigment granules were present in the fixed material.  相似文献

Clitellata (earthworms, leeches, and allies) is a clade of segmented annelid worms that comprise more than 5000 species found worldwide in many aquatic and terrestrial habitats. According to current views, the first clitellates were either aquatic (marine or freshwater) or terrestrial. To address this question further, we assessed the phylogenetic relationships among clitellates using parsimony, maximum likelihood and Bayesian analyses of 175 annelid 18S ribosomal DNA sequences. We then defined two ecological characters (Habitat and Aquatic‐environment preferences) and mapped those characters on the trees from the three analyses, using parsimony character‐state reconstruction (i.e. Fitch optimization). We accommodated phylogenetic uncertainty in the character mapping by reconstructing character evolution on all the trees resulting from parsimony and maximum likelihood bootstrap analyses and, in the Bayesian inference, on the trees sampled using the Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm. Our analyses revealed that an ‘aquatic’ ancestral state for clitellates is a robust result. By using alterations of coding characters and constrained analyses, we also demonstrated that the hypothesis for a terrestrial origin of clitellates is not supported. Our analyses also suggest that the most recent ancestor of clitellates originated from a freshwater environment. A total of 30 microbialites at two sites in Lake Clifton, Yalgorup National Park, Western Australia, were sampled by coring to quantify the associated fauna with these organo-sedimentary structures. Twenty five species of aquatic fauna were recorded from the cores, comprising 20 species of metazoan, predominantly Crustacea (including Melita kauerti (Amphipoda), Exosphaeroma cf. serventii (Isopoda); and Cyprideis australiensis(Ostracoda); Polychaeta (Capitella cf. capitata); nematodes; and five species of Foraminifera (Protista). Multivariate analysis of the five numerically most abundant taxa (amphipods, isopods, ostracods, polychaetes, nematodes) separated microbialites by season and submergence. Numbers of all taxa, particularly polychaetes and amphipods, were much higher in spring than in autumn, and in permanently-inundated than in seasonally-inundated microbialites. The exception was higher numbers of juvenile polychaetes in seasonally-inundated microbialites at the northern site in spring. This study showed that modern thrombolitic microbialites can co-exist with a diverse invertebrate fauna and serves as a baseline for future studies of interactions between microbialites and fauna.  相似文献

The composition and arrangement of cells in the preseptal region of metanephridia have been examined by ultrastructural methods in two naidid species, Nais variabilis and Dero digitata. Within this region special attention has been paid to the portion around the orifice and the region where the metanephridium penetrates the septum. In N. variabilis, the preseptal region is composed of four cells and, in D. digitata, three cells are present. In both species three cells correspond in position and ultrastructural details and, hence, are interpreted as homologous. These are the mantle cell, the flame cell, and the canal cell. The mantle cell covers the preseptal region and surrounds the opening. The margin around the orifice is endowed with cilia, which extend into the coelomic space and beat irregularly. They do not enter the orifice and, thus, are not part of the internal ciliary flame. Posteriorly, in D. digitata, the mantle cell originates from the septal wall, i.e., its extensions spread in the plane of the frontal coelothelium of the septum. In N. variabilis, the mantle cell is continued by a further cell, enwrapping the posterior region of the preseptal part. This cell, called the septal cell, is anchored in the septal wall like the mantle cell in D. digitata. Both cells are interpreted as mesodermal components of the metanephridium. The flame cell lies beneath the mantle cell. In front, on its dorsal wall, many cilia are inserted which extend posteriorly into the nephridial canal forming a flame. In D. digitata, the caudal extension of this cell was examined in more detail; it originates from an intraseptal position. The canal cell lines the anterior lumen of the nephridial duct. While the mantle cell and flame cell enclose the organ from a dorsal position, the canal cell lies opposite embracing the lumen from a ventromedial position. Behind, it extends into the postseptal region for a certain distance. It is concluded that metanephridia in the Clitellata have a coelothelial component and, probably, are not just descendants of a single cell, the nephridioblast. The results further indicate that a flame cell and a mantle cell or some corresponding coelothelial cells may be constitutive elements of the ground plan of the clitellate metanephridium. Branchiobdellidans, or crayfish worms, are ectosymbiotic clitellate annelids associated primarily with freshwater crayfishes. The main objectives of our study were to infer a molecular phylogeny for the North American Branchiobdellida, examine its congruence with morphology-based hypotheses of relationships at the subfamily and genus level, and use our dataset to assess consistency of GenBank-archived branchiobdellidan sequences. We used nucleotide sequence data from two mtDNA genes (COI and 16S rDNA) and three nuclear genes (28S rDNA, 18S rDNA, and ITS1) to estimate phylogenetic relationships among 47 described and one undescribed species of Branchiobdellida. We recovered a monophyletic branchiobdellidan clade with generally short branch lengths, suggesting that a large portion of the taxon has likely undergone a recent and rapid radiation in North America. Results from our phylogenetic analyses indicate that current taxonomic groupings are largely unsupported by the molecular data. All four subfamilies are either paraphyletic or polyphyletic, and only three of seven sampled non-monotypic genera were monophyletic. We found a high rate (49%) of inconsistency in GenBank-archived sequences, over 70% of which can be attributed to field- or laboratory-based error.  相似文献

An examination of the cuticle of six aquatic oligochaete species using transmission electron microscopy revealed a larger morphological variation than previously known. Three freshwater species, Aulodrilus pluriseta, Spirosperma ferox (both Tubificidae), and Pristina breviseta (Naididae), and three marine species, Clitellio arenarius, Heterochaeta costata (both Tubificidae), and Paranais litoralis (Naididae), were investigated. The arrangement of the collagen fibers in the cuticle differs among the studied species. Only S. ferox shows an "orthogonal grid," i.e., layers of parallel fibers perpendicular to each other, as earlier described for lumbricids and enchytraeids. Clitellio arenarius and H. costata have fibers arranged in layers, while A. pluriseta and P. litoralis have irregularly distributed fibers. Pristina breviseta lacks cuticular fibers. The matrix surrounding the collagen fibers (when present) continues outside the fiber layer, making up a thin epicuticle, which has a unique banding in each of the studied species. The external surface of the epicuticle is covered with epicuticular projections. Their number, shape, and attachment to the epicuticle vary among the studied species. Furthermore, a distinctive internal substructure of the projections was observed in H. costata, A. pluriseta, S. ferox, and P. breviseta. Microvilli, extensions from the epidermal cells, penetrate the cuticle and terminate at its outer surface. In three species microvilli were observed to pinch off the epicuticular projections. The size, number, and shape of the latter vary; no typical microvilli were observed in S. ferox.  相似文献

Summary

Proacrosome and acrosome of the primitive leech Acanthobdella peledina are described by means of transmission electron microscopy. The proacrosome develops in early spermatids and has the shape of a pot-bellied urn with an opening towards the nucleus. Its wall is formed by a thin vesicle. In its interior, many sections of tubular structures are visible. This urn is seated atop a short, electron-dense tube. The resultant acrosome is unusually elongated, with a helically coiled acrosomal tube forming its base. Above the tube the thin acrosomal vesicle encloses a central space, within which is the acrosomal rod. The acrosomal structures clearly indicate a sister-group relationship to the Euhirudinea, but do not corroborate the notion of close kinship with the Branchiobdellidae.  相似文献

Three jars from the Hamburg Museum contained specimens of Branchiobdella minuta, presumably from the original Pierantoni (1912) material, and Cirrodrilus cirratus and C. uchidai from Yamaguchi's (1932a) collection. The head of a syntype of B. minuta was described and B. cheni becomes its junior subjective synonym. One specimen each of C. cirratus and C. uchidai was sectioned and described, particularly the male genitalia. The diet of all three branchiobdellids consists of microorganisms. In Cirrodrilus sp. basic protein granules were demonstrated in the gland cells of the intestine and its chloragogen cells. The peristomial and lateral epidermal gland cell secretions were characterized histochemically.  相似文献

Mining is a relatively highly monitored industry. While chemical pollutants (toxic ions, radionuclides, etc.) have mostly been eliminated from mining waters, other types of environmental pollution (temperature regime alterations, high concentrations of various anions, etc.) can affect benthic invertebrates. In this study, we focused on the effect of mining water effluent on the diversity and density of aquatic Clitellata. Four sampling sites were selected. Three sites in a natural stream (the Nedvědi?ka River, Czech Republic), one upstream and two downstream from the mining effluent, and one site on the mining waters were sampled monthly during 2008–2009. Environmental variables were recorded in and samples were collected from two types of habitats — riffles and pools. The response of clitellate assemblages was evaluated using principal component analysis and generalised estimating equations. The results indicated that the mining effluent caused partial species exchange and had negative effects on clitellate taxa richness and abundance. These responses were specific to both the habitat (riffle/pool) and species sampled. In each of the different taxa studied, we observed one of four typical clitellate responses: (a) elimination of stenotherm species; (b) reduction of clitellate species followed by quick recovery; (c) neutral response; or (d) positive influence. We found that aquatic clitellates, which are considered to be eurytopic with broad ecological valences, are also sensitive to even slight environmental pollution.  相似文献

Sperm morphology and spermatogenesis were examined in the oligochaete annelid Isochaetides arenarius, a species belonging to the subfamily Tubificinae inhabiting the sediments of Lake Baikal. As all tubificines, Isochaetides produces two types of spermatozoa, named eusperm and parasperm. The eusperm are the fertilizing male gametes and consist, in sequence, of an acrosome, a nucleus, a mitochondrial mid-piece, and a tail. The parasperm have the same general architecture, but differ in cytological details: the acrosome is shorter, devoid of a perforatorium, and the acrosome vesicle has a different, simpler, shape. The nucleus is much shorter and rectilinear (the eusperm nucleus is twisted). The mid-piece mitochondria are less numerous but their overall volume is larger. The flagellum has a plasma membrane largely separated from the axoneme, and is devoid of glycogen granules. After mating, the two sperm types gather in the spermathecae to form spermatozeugmata; in these structures the parasperm form an external sheath involving the centrally located eusperm and their tails are connected by conspicuous septate junctions. Parasperm nuclei are produced through a process of fragmentation of the 'spermatocytes', whereas the flagellar basal bodies are produced by a process similar to that giving rise to basal bodies in ciliated epithelia.  相似文献

Naidids are tiny, primarily freshwater oligochaete annelids which reproduce asexually by fission. We investigated the phylogenetic relationships within this group by sequencing 1224 bp of the mitochondrial gene cytochrome oxidase I (COI) from 26 species of naidids (representing 13 of the 23 genera currently recognized), as well as from four tubificids, their closest allies. Although not completely concordant, maximum parsimony and Bayesian inference analyses agreed in several important respects, with no well-supported conflicts. Our study, the first detailed molecular investigation of naidid relationships, suggests that naidids fall into two groups, one comprised of the genus Pristina, and another comprised of all other genera sampled. The clear division of naidids into these two groups best matches an early, simple classification of the group by Lastockin (1924); the more recent classifications proposed by Sperber (1948) and Nemec and Brinkhurst (1987) are not as consistent with our results. We note that our study suggests the genus Stylaria is comprised of two distinct species, Stylaria lacustris and Stylaria fossularis, rather than merely two morphotypes of a single species. Based on our phylogenetic results, we suggest that pigmented eyes evolved only once among naidids but must have been lost multiple times, and that the elongation of the prostomium into a proboscis evolved at least twice independently. The simplest form of fission, architomy (fragmentation), occurs in two of the most basally branching naidid genera, and may represent the plesiomorphic condition for naidids.  相似文献

Fan worms (Sabellidae) possess paired modified prostomial structures at the base of the radiolar crown, dorso‐lateral to the mouth, called dorsal lips. The dorsal lips are involved in the sorting of particles collected by the radiolar crown. The range of variation in the morphology of dorsal lips is extensive, and probably this is not only due to adaptations to different environments and feeding preferences but also due to phylogenetic constraints. In this study, we describe and compare the morphology of dorsal lips in a range of sabellid taxa based on histological cross‐sections of these structures, and compare our data and terminology with those of previous studies. Dorsal lips are maintained erect in most taxa by a modified radiole fused to them known as dorsal radiolar appendage. We suggest that dorsal radiolar appendages with an internal supporting axis (cellular or acellular) and probably also the ventral lips are synapomorphies of the family. J. The aim of the present study is to describe the organization of the ovary and mode of oogenesis at the ultrastructural level in two representatives of Lumbriculida – Lumbriculus variegatus and Stylodrilus heringianus. In both species studied, the ovaries are small and conically shaped structures that are attached to the intersegmental septum via a thin ligament. The ovaries are composed of germline cysts formed by germ cells interconnected by stable cytoplasmic bridges. As a rule, the cyst center is occupied by a poorly developed anuclear cytoplasmic mass, termed a cytophore, whereas the germ cells are located at the periphery of the cyst. Germline cysts are enveloped by somatic cells. The ovaries of the species studied are polarized, i.e., along the long axis of the ovary there is an evident gradient of germ cell development. The data obtained suggest ovary meroism, i.e., two categories of germ cells were found: oocytes, which continue meiosis, gather nutrients, grow and protrude into the body cavity, and nurse cells, which do not grow and are supposed to supply oocytes with cell organelles and macromolecules via the cytophore. The ovary structure and mode of oogenesis in the species studied were compared with those of other clitellate annelids. As a rule, in all clitellates studied to date, the ovaries are composed of germline cysts equipped with a cytophore and associated with somatic cells; however, the ovary morphology differs between taxa regarding several quantitative and qualitative features. The ovary organization and mode of oogenesis in L. variegatus and S. heringianus strongly resemble those found in Tubificinae and Branchiobdellida studied to date. Our results also support a sister-group relationship between Lumbriculida and a clade comprising ectoparasitic clitellates (i.e., Branchiobdellida, Acanthobdellida and Hirudinida) with Branchiobdellida as a plesiomorphic sister group to Acanthobdellida and Hirudinida.  相似文献

Summary In recently collected specimens of Acanthobdella peledina the nervous system, the genital organs and the coelomic organisation were reinvestigated after complete serial sections. These anatomical results are schematically represented. In addition, the integument, the chaetae and the peripheral muscle layer were investigated by electron microscopy. In general, the results confirm Livanow's classic monograph (1906), with the exception of a few details. The body apparently possesses neither a prostomium nor an achaetous buccal region (peristomium). The number of 29 true segments is concluded from the number of segmental ganglia. The five anteriormost segments, each with four pairs of hookshaped chaetae arranged around the mouth opening, are considered to be functionally equivalent to an anterior sucker. The ultrastructure of the integument and the chaetae generally conforms to the typical annelidan pattern. The muscle cells are of the typical hirudinean type. The outer male genital pore is positioned in segment 10; the female organs open in segment 11 directly behind the septum between segments 10 and 11. The main emphasis is laid on the evaluation of the position of the taxon within the Clitellata, including a discussion of the Branchiobdellida, and the cladograms presented show the Acanthobdellida to be the sister group of the Euhirudinea. Characters shared by the Branchiobdellida and Hirudinea (including A. peledina) are considered to be convergently evolved.  相似文献

This study addresses whether cave dwelling annelids exhibited similar reductive and constructive traits equally as strong as those of arthropods and vertebrates inhabiting caves. Known as troglomorphism, these adaptations bring about striking morphologies across invertebrates and vertebrates from both aquatic and terrestrial cave habitats, and include varying degrees of eye and pigmentation loss, as well as hypertrophy of body appendages and sensorial structures. Employing phylogenetic comparative methods and ancestral character reconstructions on a worldwide data set of a group of annelids, the scale worms (Aphroditiformia), we investigate the behavioural and morphological traits of species living in marine caves in comparison with those species living outside caves. Our work demonstrated that cave scale worms respond similar to arthropods in cave environments, showing a significant elongation of sensory parapodial cirri, while lacking eyes and pigmentation. However, whereas elongation of sensory appendages likely occurred in correlation to cave colonization, eyes were plausibly lost in correlation with specialization and colonization of deep‐sea habitats.  相似文献
