Tests of the mate-guarding hypothesis for social monogamy: male snapping shrimp prefer to associate with high-value females 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Social monogamy without biparental care has evolved in manytaxa, and a number of hypotheses have been developed to explainthis phenomenon. Several authors have suggested the importanceof male mate-guarding behavior in the evolution of social monogamy, although empirical support for this hypothesis is lacking. Inthe caridean shrimp genus Alpheus, social monogamy may resultfrom selection on males for long-term guarding of females becausemating is temporally restricted to a short time after the female'smolt. I used Alpheus angulatus to test two predictions of theextended mate-guarding hypothesis: Males should (1) be physiologicallycapable of predicting the timing of female sexual receptivity, and (2) prefer to associate with (guard) females that are closerto sexual receptivity. Data from a Y-maze experiment testingfor distance chemical communication showed that males of A.angulatus were attracted to water treated by exposure to premoltfemales, repulsed by water treated by exposure to intermoltmales and females, and did not appear to respond in either directionto water treated by exposure to premolt males. In mate choiceexperiments, significantly more males paired with premolt femalesthan with postmolt females. These data suggest that males ofA. angulatus engage in precopulatory mate-guarding behavior.Other factors (population density, sex ratio) may have playeda role in the temporal extension of mate guarding to socialmonogamy. 相似文献

Nocturnal frog species rely extensively on vocalization for reproduction. But recent studies provide evidence for an important, though long overlooked, role of visual communication. In many species, calling males exhibit a conspicuous pulsing vocal sac, a signal bearing visually important dynamic components. Here, we investigate female preference for male vocal sac coloration—a question hitherto unexplored—and male colour pattern in the European tree frog (Hyla arborea). Under nocturnal conditions, we conducted two-choice experiments involving video playbacks of calling males with identical calls and showing various naturally encountered colour signals, differing in their chromatic and brightness components. We adjusted video colours to match the frogs'' visual perception, a crucial aspect not considered in previous experiments. Females prefer males with a colourful sac and a pronounced flank stripe. Both signals probably enhance male conspicuousness and facilitate detection and localization by females. This study provides the first experimental evidence of a preference for specific vocal sac spectral properties in a nocturnal anuran species. Vocal sac coloration is based on carotenoids and may convey information about male quality worthwhile for females to assess. The informative content of the flank stripe remains to be demonstrated. 相似文献

In many species, females prefer large males as mates. In this paper, we examined whether female Pyrenean mountain newts (Euproctus asper) would show a preference for large males in a simultaneous choice situation. When we tested for a visual preference relative
to male body size using visual cues, females did not prefer large males. When chemical cues were presented, females did show
a preference, but contrary to our prediction, they preferred the smaller of two males. E. asper males exhibit coercive mating behavior (amplexus), keeping females from feeding for several hours or even days, which may
explain why females avoid large, physically stronger, and thus, more coercive males. The predominantly nocturnal lifestyle
may explain why visual cues are less important for mate discrimination in this species. 相似文献

Pollination of Unonopsis stipitata (Annonaceae) by males of two perfume-collecting bees, Euglossa imperialis and Eulaema bombiformis (Euglossini) is described. This is the first detailed account of this pollination mode in a member of a basal angiosperm family. Pollinator behaviour, identification of the odour bouquet and electrophysiological reaction of one of the two pollinators to the odour bouquet were determined. The collected odour is produced by 'osmophores' located adaxially on the petals. Starch and polysaccharides accumulated in petals are metabolized during odour emission. Mainly monoterpenes were detected in the scent samples, among them trans-carvone oxide. This molecule is thought by several authors to be the key attractant for male Eulaema bees and may be pivotal for convergent evolution of the perfume-collecting syndrome among dicotyledonous and monocotyledonous plants. It is speculated that Unonopsis , which on the basis of molecular age dating is considered a relatively recent genus of the Annonaceae (being 15–30 million years old), has diversified in relation to male euglossine bee pollinators. 相似文献

Background
Within the astonishing diversity of orchid pollination systems, sexual deception is one of the most stunning. An example is the genus Ophrys, where plants attract male bees as pollinators by mimicking female mating signals. Unsaturated hydrocarbons (alkenes) are often the key signal for this chemical mimicry. Here we investigate the evolution of these key compounds within Orchidinae by mapping their production in flowers of selected species onto their estimated phylogeny. 相似文献9.
Stronger selection on males has the potential to lower the deleterious mutation load of females, reducing the cost of sex. However, few studies have directly quantified the strength of selection for both sexes. As the magnitude of inbreeding depression (ID) is related to the strength of selection, we measured the cost of inbreeding for both males and females in a laboratory population of Drosophila melanogaster. Using a novel technique for inbreeding, we found significant ID for both juvenile viability and adult fitness in both sexes. The genetic variation responsible for this depression in fitness appeared to be recessive for adult fitness (h=0.11) and partially additive for juvenile viability (h=0.29). ID was identical across the sexes in terms of juvenile viability but was significantly more deleterious for males than females as adults, even though female X-chromosome homogamety should predispose them to a higher inbreeding load. We estimated the strength of selection on adult males to be 1.24 greater than on adult females, and this appears to be a consequence of selection arising from competition for mates. Combined with the generally positive intersexual genetic correlation for inbred lines, our results suggest that the mutation load of sexual females could be meaningfully reduced by stronger selection acting on males. 相似文献

Using bee pollinators as a means for the dissemination of microbial control agents, such as Beauveria bassiana, against insect pests of agricultural crops is a novel and interesting approach to biological control. In four laboratory trials, one in Canada and three in Jordan, factors affecting the acquisition of B. bassiana by honey bees were evaluated using hive-mounted inoculum dispensers. The numbers of conidia carried by bees emerging from the dispensers differed according to the type of carrier used. Bees that passed through corn flour acquired more inoculum than did those that walked through wheat flour, durum semolina, corn meal, potato starch, potato flakes, oat flour or barley flour. The numbers of conidia acquired by the bees increased with decreasing particle size and moisture content of the carrier, and with increasing density of B. bassiana conidia in the formulation. Time required for a bee to pass through the dispenser did not significantly affect the acquisition of conidia. This study indicated that honeybees (Apis mellifera carnica) have a great potential for vectoring B. bassiana in crop systems. It also opens more avenues for studies on bee delivery of other microbial biological control agents. 相似文献

The navel orangeworm is the primary insect pest of almonds in California, and egg traps are the primary means of monitoring this pest. A previous study found that the current use of 2-4 traps per 64 ha block usually is not sufficient to provide management information specifically for that block. In this study, we compare data from large grids of egg traps in varied commercial almond orchards with trapping data for females and males, with the objective of finding a more cost-effective monitoring program using currently available attractants. The proportion of egg traps with eggs was highly correlated with mean eggs per egg trap, and with females and males trapped simultaneously at the same location. Almond variety and the type of bait used had little impact on the relationship between the proportion of egg traps with eggs and the number of eggs per traps. Traps in orchards with more unharvested (mummy) almonds had more eggs, suggesting that navel orangeworm abundance affected traps more than competition from mummies. Laboratory experiments comparing age-specific oviposition in two-choice and no-choice situations found that younger, more fecund females laid a greater proportion of eggs on the preferred substrate in a two-choice situation, but that age-specific fecundity was not different between substrates in no-choice tests. These findings indicate that the proportion of egg traps with eggs provides a more stable indication of navel orangeworm phenology than mean eggs per trap. We suggest that similar information could be obtained in a more cost-effective manner with female trapping. 相似文献

Reproduction is energetically expensive for both sexes, but the magnitude of expenditure and its relationship to reproductive success differ fundamentally between males and females. Males allocate relatively little to gamete production and, thus, can reproduce successfully with only minor energy investment. In contrast, females of many species experience high fecundity-independent costs of reproduction (such as migration to nesting sites), so they need to amass substantial energy reserves before initiating reproductive activity. Thus, we expect that the relationship between energy reserves and the intensity of reproductive behavior involves a threshold effect in females, but a gradual (or no) effect in males. We tested this prediction using captive vipers (Vipera aspis), dividing both males and females into groups of high versus low body condition. Snakes from each group were placed together and observed for reproductive behavior; sex-steroid levels were also measured. As predicted, females in below-average body condition had very low estradiol levels and did not show sexual receptivity, whereas males of all body condition indices had significant testosterone levels and displayed active courtship. Testosterone levels and courtship intensity increased gradually (i.e., no step function) with body condition in males, but high estradiol levels and sexual receptivity were seen only in females with body reserves above a critical threshold. 相似文献

The female nutrition hypothesis posits that provisioning intensity of incubating females by their mates may depend on female
needs and ensure proper incubation and a corresponding high hatching and breeding success of breeding pairs. Here, we have
handicapped female pied flycatchers Ficedula hypoleuca at the beginning of incubation by clipping two primaries on each wing and filmed nests during incubation and later nestling
provisioning to estimate male involvement in incubation feeding at the nest and in offspring care. Incubation feeding was
more frequent at late nests. Correcting for this seasonal effect, incubation feeding was significantly affected by treatment
and twice as high at experimental as at control nests. There was no effect of the experiment on female incubation attendance.
The handicap did not result in any effect on hatching and breeding success, nestling growth and male or female provisioning
and mass at the end of the nestling period. Males adjust their incubation feeding activity at the nest to female energetic
requirements during incubation. 相似文献

The European badger Meles meles is thought to mate throughout the year with two mating peaks occurring in late winter/spring and summer/autumn. After mating, fertilized ova enter embryonic diapause (delayed implantation) at the blastocyst stage, which lasts up to eleven months. Even if mating is successful, however, the estrous cycle may continue during embryonic diapause, which suggests that female badgers are capable of superfetation (conception during pregnancy). This may increase female fitness by facilitating polyandry, and reduce the risk of infanticide by resident males through paternity confusion. Detailed understanding of female receptivity, specifically the association of superfetation with embryonic diapause, may explain field observations of seemingly inconsistent reproductive tactics of male badgers with regard to, for instance, whether or not they guard mates or defend territories. The combination of embryonic diapause and superfetation may occur in other mustelids; if so, the sociobiology of mustelids will need reevaluating, and the Mustelidae may prove to be a good model taxon for studies of sexual conflict in the reproduction of eutherian mammals. 相似文献

Lutzomyia longipalpis adult males form leks on or near hosts and release (1S,3S,7R)-3-methyl-alpha-himachalene from their tergal glands to lure females to the same site for mating and feeding. Here we have examined whether the male-produced attractant could also serve as a male aggregation stimulus. High resolution chiral capillary gas chromatography analysis of male tergal gland extracts, synthetic (1S,3S,7R)-3-methyl-alpha-himachalene, and a synthetic mixture of all isomers of 3-methyl-alpha-himachalene, was coupled to electrophysiological recordings from ascoid sensillum receptor cells in antennae of male and female sandflies. Receptor cells of both sexes responded only to the main component of the male tergal gland extract that eluted at the same retention time as (1S,3S,7R)-3-methyl-alpha-himachalene. Furthermore, of the eight 3-methyl-alpha-himachalene isomers in the synthetic mixture only the fraction containing (1S,3S,7R)-3-methyl-alpha-himachalene, co-eluting with an isomer of (1S*,3S*,7S*)-3-methyl-alpha-himachalene, elicited an electrophysiological response from male and female ascoid sensillum receptor cells. Both males and females flew upwind in a wind tunnel towards a filter paper disk treated with either 4-6 male equivalents of the tergal gland extract, pure (1S,3S,7R)-3-methyl-alpha-himachalene or the synthetic mixture of eight isomers. This indicates that (1S,3S,7R)-3-methyl-alpha-himachalene derived from L. longipalpis males may have a dual function in causing male aggregation as well as serving as a sex pheromone for females. 相似文献

The gonads of female and male Triops
cancriformis specimens from populations of the northern part of the species distribution area were examined by conventional transmission
electron microscopy in order to gain insight into the complicated reproductive mode of the species. Ovarian follicles consisted
of an oocyte and three nurse cells and were surrounded by a thin layer of follicular cells. Oocytes are initially smaller
than nurse cells and contained mitochondria of the cristae type as well as many free ribosomes. The prominent nucleus contained
a nucleolus. The cytoplasm of oocytes was filled with yolk globules that were surrounded by membranes of the endoplasmic reticulum.
Nurse cells also contained yolk globules. The follicle duct walls consisted of closely packed elongated cells covered by a
lamellar basal lamina. No distinct Golgi apparatus was found in the follicle duct cells. The passage of oocytes through the
duct was accompanied by a marked flattening of the follicle duct cells. Simultaneously, the oocytes were wrapped in eggshell
material before entering the longitudinal oviduct. Testicular lobes were not found in any of the investigated female specimens.
In male animals, the epithelial wall of the testicular tubules consisted of both germinal and vegetative cells. Maturing spermatids
formed multicellular nests located in clearly delimited cysts in the intercellular space of the testicular epithelium. The
lumen of the testicular tubules contained, exclusively, free mature spermatozoa. These characteristics point to the cystic
type of spermiogenesis. Mature spermatozoa were non-flagellate, had a regular ovoid shape of 4–5 μm diameter, and an acrosome
was not found. Only a negligible amount of spermatozoa (< 5%) showed signs of degeneration. In conclusion, the results provide
evidence for a parthenogenetic and/or bisexual reproduction mode rather than a hermaphroditic one in the populations examined.
