A leading hypothesis for the evolutionary function of sex postulates that sex is an adaptation that purges deleterious mutations from the genome, thereby increasing the equilibrium mean fitness of a sexual population relative to its asexual competitor. This hypothesis requires two necessary conditions: first, the mutation rate per genome must be of order one, and, second, multiple mutations within a genome must act with positive epistasis, that is, two or more mutations of different genes must be more harmful together than if they acted independently. Here, by reconsidering the theory of mutation-selection balance at a single diploid gene locus, we demonstrate a significant advantage of sex due to nearly recessive mutations provided the mutation rate per genome is of order one. The assumption of positive epistasis is unnecessary, and multiple mutations may be assumed to act independently.  相似文献

A major sex difference in the rate of continuing bone expansion was confirmed for 5660 adult subjects of European ancestry. The five-decade gain in metacarpal midshaft area amounted to 8.4% in 3455 females and 2.8% in 2205 males. There was no systematic age effect on the length of the second metacarpal. Accordingly, both bone expansion and the marked sex difference in its magnitude may be attributed to sex-specific aspects of ageing much like the sex difference in endosteal surface loss.  相似文献

Summary Ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency is an X-linked disease with possible manifestations in heterozygous females. Using segregation analysis in families from the literature pooled with a French series, the penetrance could be estimated to be 17% in heterozygous females (15% with severe and 2% with milder symptoms). Using these estimates, the proportion of sporadic cases among heterozygous females and hemizygous males could be derived. This proportion is 57% in females. In males, it depends on mutation rate values: assuming equal mutation rates in sperm and eggs, this proportion should be 40%. However, this value can be strongly rejected based on the proportion of isolated cases in male sibships. In both sets of data, segregation analysis provided no evidence for sporadic affected males, suggesting that there are virtually no mutations in eggs. The upper limit of the confidence interval, 0%–16%, can be taken as the maximum prior probability that an affected male occurs as the result of a new mutation in his mother's germ cells.  相似文献

[2-14C]Methyl cyanide (acetonitrile) is metabolized to citrate, succinate, fumarate, malate, glutamate, pyrrolidonecarboxylic acid and aspartate. Non-radioactive acetamide and acetate compete with 14C from methyl cyanide, and [2-14C]acetate and [2-14C]methyl cyanide are metabolized at similar rates, giving identical products. This evidence, combined with the inhibitory effect of fluoroacetate and arsenite on methyl cyanide metabolism, indicates that the pathway is: methyl cyanide leads to acetamide leads to acetate leads to tricarboxylic acid-cycle intermediates. The pathway was investigated in a species of Pseudomonas (group III; N.C.I.B. 10477), but comparison of labelling patterns suggests that it also exists in several higher plants.  相似文献

Genomic imprinting is a phenomenon by which the expression of an allele at a locus depends on the parent of origin. Two different two-locus evolutionary models are presented in which a second locus modifies the imprinting status of the primary locus, which is under differential selection in males and females. In the first model, a modifier allele that imprints the primary locus invades the population when the average dominance coefficient among females and males is >12 and selection is weak. The condition for invasion is always heavily contingent upon the extent of dominance. Imprinting is more likely in the sex experiencing weaker selection only under some parameter regimes, whereas imprinting by either sex is equally likely under other regimes. The second model shows that a modifier allele that induces imprinting will increase when imprinting has a direct selective advantage. The results are not qualitatively dependent on whether the modifier locus is autosomal or X linked.  相似文献

Background

Oestradiol is a steroid hormone that exerts extensive influence on brain development and is a powerful modulator of hippocampal structure and function. The hippocampus is a critical brain region regulating complex cognitive and emotional responses and is implicated in the aetiology of several mental health disorders, many of which exhibit some degree of sex difference. Many sex differences in the adult rat brain are determined by oestradiol action during a sensitive period of development. We had previously reported a sex difference in rates of cell genesis in the developing hippocampus of the laboratory rat. Males generate more new cells on average than females. The current study explored the effects of both exogenous and endogenous oestradiol on this sex difference.

Methods

New born male and female rat pups were injected with the mitotic marker 5-bromo-2-deoxyuridine (BrdU) and oestradiol or agents that antagonize oestradiol action. The effects on cell number, proliferation, differentiation and survival were assessed at several time points. Significant differences between groups were determined by two- or thee-Way ANOVA.

Results

Newborn males had higher rates of cell proliferation than females. Oestradiol treatment increased cell proliferation in neonatal females, but not males, and in the CA1 region many of these cells differentiated into neurons. The increased rate of proliferation induced by neonatal oestradiol persisted until at least 3 weeks of age, suggesting an organizational effect. Administering the aromatase inhibitor, formestane, or the oestrogen receptor antagonist, tamoxifen, significantly decreased the number of new cells in males but not females.

Conclusion

Endogenous oestradiol increased the rate of cell proliferation observed in newborn males compared to females. This sex difference in neonatal neurogenesis may have implications for adult differences in learning strategy, stress responsivity or vulnerability to damage or disease.  相似文献

It is thought that neural sex differences are functionally related to sex differences in the behaviour of vertebrates. A prominent example is the song control system of songbirds. Inter-specific comparisons have led to the hypothesis that sex differences in song nuclei size correlate with sex differences in song behaviour. However, only few species with similar song behaviour in both sexes have been investigated and not all data fit the hypothesis. We investigated the proposed structure-function relationship in a cooperatively breeding and duetting songbird, the white-browed sparrow weaver (Plocepasser mahali). This species lives in groups of 2-10 individuals, with a dominant breeding pair and male and female subordinates. While all male and female group members sing duet and chorus song, a male, once it has reached the dominant position in the group, sings an additional type of song that comprises a distinct and large syllable repertoire. Here we show for both types of male-female comparisons a male-biased sex difference in neuroanatomy of areas of the song production pathway (HVC and RA) that does not correlate with the observed polymorphism in song behaviour. In contrast, in situ hybridisation of mRNA of selected genes expressed in the song nucleus HVC reveals a gene expression pattern that is either similar between sexes in female-subordinate male comparisons or female-biased in female-dominant male comparisons. Thus, the polymorphic gene expression pattern would fit the sex- and status-related song behaviour. However, this implies that once a male has become dominant it produces the duetting song with a different neural phenotype than subordinate males.  相似文献

Partial Dental Agenesis has been shown related to decreased mesiodistal tooth size. The sexual difference in permanent tooth size of 104 normal individuals with congenital absence of one or more secondary teeth has been studied. Males are observed to have more mesiodistal size reduction than females. In only two of 14 tooth types examined was a statistical sex difference in mesiodistal size shown. It is of interest that each of these was in the canine field area. A sex difference was slightly more apparent when studying the buccolingual dimension; however, several difficulties were encountered in obtaining measurements in this diameter.  相似文献
