Selenium deficiency in yugoslavia   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Data on selenium (Se) deficiency in Yugoslavia are presented. The results include Se content of soil, cereal crops, and garlic grown in these soils, and human serum and scalp hair from several towns and regions. All data indicate a serious Se deficiency: soil (n=140), the mean value of 200±69.6 μg/kg Se; wheat, (58) = 20.5 ± 12.4 μg/kg; corn, (79) = 13.7 ± 13.6 μg/kg; and garlic, (66) = 13.7 ± 17.1 μg/kg Se. Analyses of human tissue show a very low Se status of the Yugoslav population: serum, (n=875) = 50.0 ± 18.0 μg/L and scalp hair, (388) = 94 ± 16 μg/kg Se. In some regions, Se contents of grain, garlic, and human serum and hair are approaching those in the low-Se belt in China. It is assumed that very low Se status of a human population could be a risk factor in the development of Balkan Endemic Nephropathy (BEN) and in a high incidence of urinary tract tumors (UTT) in endemic areas. Summary The genes for adenosine deaminase (ADA) and Sadenosyl homocysteine hydrolase (AHCY or SAHH) are known to be syntenic and within measurable distance from each other, on chromosome 20 in man. In the present study an informative family is described in which the recombination fraction (θ) between the respective genes is estimated to be about 0.18. Together with the published finding of θ=0.15 (Eiberg and Mohr 1985) in informative Danish families, the recombination fraction for the pooled data is calculated to be θ=0.14 (in men), (in women) and (both sexes taken together).  相似文献

It is observed that a dynamical continuity equation for biomass distribution yields the asymptotic steady-state exponential dependencen=A exp( ) exhibited by certain fishery data, wherem is the biomass of an individual,n is the number of individuals per unit biomass interval, andA, are positive constants. Bimolecular oxygenation of tri-liganded R-state human hemoglobin (HbA) is described by bi-exponential kinetics with association rate constants k = 27.2 ± 1.3 (M·sec)-1 and k = 62.9 ± 1.6 (M·sec)-1. Both the observed processes have been assigned to the bimolecular oxygenation of - and -subunits of the native tetrameric protein by molecular oxygen. The quantum yields of photodissociation within the completely oxygenated R-state HbA are = 0.0120 ± 0.0017 and = 0.044 ± 0.005 for - and -subunits, respectively. The oxygenation reactions of isolated PCMB- and PCMB-hemoglobin chains are described by mono-exponential kinetics with the association rate constants k = 44 ± 2 (M·sec)-1 and k = 51 ± 1 (M·sec)-1, respectively. The quantum yields of photodissociation of isolated PCMB- and PCMB-chains (0.056 ± 0.006 and 0.065 ± 0.006, respectively) are greater than that observed for appropriate subunits within the R-state of oxygenated HbA.  相似文献

A forest’s productivity can be optimized by the application of rules derived from monopolized circles. A monopolized circle is defined as a circle whose center is a tree and whose radius is half of the distance between the tree itself and its nearest neighbor. Three characteristics of monopolized circle are proved. (1) Monopolized circles do not overlay each other, the nearest relationship being tangent. (2) “Full uniform pattern” means that the grid of trees (a×b=N) covers the whole plot, so that the distance between each tree in a row is the same as the row spacing. The total monopolized circle area with a full uniform pattern is independent on the number of trees and times the plot area. (3) If a tree is removed, the area of some trees’ monopolized circle will increase without decreasing the monopolized circles of the other trees. According to the above three characteristics, “uniform index” is defined as the total area of monopolized circles in a plot divided by the total area of the monopolized circles, arranged in a uniform pattern in the same shaped plot. According to the definition of monopolized circle, the distribution of uniform index for a random pattern and the variance of L is . It is evident that E(L) is independent on N and the plot area; hence, L is a relative index. L can be used to compare the uniformity among plots with different areas and the numbers of trees. In a random pattern, where L is equivalent to the tree density of the plot in which the number of trees is 1 and the area is π, the influence of tree number and plot area to L is eliminated. When n→∞, D(L)→0 and it indicates that the greater the number of tree is in the plots, the smaller the difference between the uniform indices will be. There are three types of patterns for describing tree distribution (aggregated, random, and uniform patterns). Since the distribution of L in the random pattern is accurately derived, L can be used to test the pattern types. The research on Moarshan showed that the whole plot has an aggregated pattern; the first, third, and sixth parts have an aggregated pattern; and the second, fourth, and fifth parts have a random pattern. None of the uniform indices is more than 0.318 (1/∏), which indicates that uniform patterns are rare in natural forests. The rules of uniform index can be applied to forest thinning. If you want to increase the value of uniform index, you must increase the total area of monopolized circles, which can be done by removing select trees. “Increasing area trees” are the removed trees and can increase the value of the uniform index. A tree is an increasing area tree if the distance between the tree and its second nearest neighbor is times longer than that between the tree itself and its first nearest neighbor, which is called the rule. It was very interesting to find that when six plots were randomly separated from the original plot, the proportion of increasing area trees in each plot was always about 0.5 without exception. In random pattern, the expected proportion of increasing area trees is about 0.35–0.44, which is different from the sampling value of 0.5. The reason is very difficult to explain, and further study is needed. Two criteria can be used to identify which trees should be removed to increase the uniform index during forest thinning. Those trees should be (1) trees whose monopolized circle areas are on the small side and (2) increasing area trees, which are found via the rule. Selected medium components were tested for 30 day growth promotion of shoot tips of Petunia inflata wild type, a cytoplasmic and a nuclear inherited chlorophyll-deficient mutant. Experiments were conducted independently with iron, sucrose, thiamine-HCl, indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), Kinetin (K), 6-benzylaminopurine (BA), coconut milk (CM), casein hydrolysate (CH), and plant extract (PE) an aqueous leaf extract, added to modified Murashige and Skoog (MS) salts and vitamins medium, and pH between 4.0 and 7.0 was also compared. The optimum concentrations of all test components were used to formulate revised MS media especially designed for in vitro shoot growth of chlorophyll-deficient petunia mutants. The optimum medium for the nuclear albino was: MS salts+1.5 mg/l thiamine-HCl+100 mg/l myo-inositol+3.5% sucrose+1% PE+5.0 mg/l IAA+0.3 mg/l K at pH 6.0; for the wild type: MS salts+0.6 mg/l thiamine-HCl+100 mg/l myo-inositol+4% sucrose+1.0 mg/l IAA+0.3 mg/l K at pH 5.0 and for the cytoplasmic albino: MS salts+0.4 mg/l thiamine-HCl+100 mg/l myo-inositol+4% sucrose+20% CM+3% PE+1.0 mg/l K at pH 5.0. On the revised MS media a 3-, 4- and 5- fold increase in 30 day plant fresh weight occurred for the nuclear, wild type and cytoplasmic chlorophyll-deficient plants, respectively.  相似文献

Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is an autosomal recessive disorder of unknown pathogenesis, characterized by recurrent, selflimited attacks of fever with synovitis, peritonitis, or pleurisy. Using DNAs from affected Israeli families, we have recently mapped the gene causing FMF (designated MEF) to the short arm of chromosome 16, with two-point lod scores in excess of 20. In this report we consider the possibility of a second FMF susceptibility locus. Before discovering linkage to markers on chromosome 16, we had found suggestive evidence for linkage to chromosome 17q, with the following maximal two-point lod scores: D17S74 (pCMM86), = 2.47, ( = 0.20); D17S40 (pLEW101), = 2.15( = 0.15); D17S35 (CRI-pP3-1), = 1.78 ( = 0.15); D17S46 (pLEW108), = 1.69 ( = 0.18), D17S254, = 2.30 ( = 0.20). Moreover, multipoint linkage analysis using D17S74 and D17S40 as fixed loci gave = 3.27 approximately 10 centimorgans (cM) telomeric to D17S40. Data with the chromosome 17 markers alone in our families suggested locus heterogeneity. Nevertheless, our families were not separable into complementary subsets showing linkage either to chromosome 16 or to chromosome 17. We also examined the possibility that the positive lod scores for chromosome 17 might reflect a secondary, modifying locus. By several measures of disease severity, families with positive lod scores for chromosome 17 loci had no worse disease than those with negative lod scores for these loci. We conclude that chromosome 17 does not encode a major FMF susceptibility gene for some of the families, nor does it encode a disease-modifying gene. Rather, it would appear that linkage to chromosome 17 is a false positive (type I) error. These results reemphasize the fact that a lod score of 3.0 corresponds to a posterior probability of linkage of 95%, with an attendant 1 in 20 chance of observing a false positive.  相似文献

In order to determine whether or not a 19-hydroxymethyl group of 19-hydroxyandrosta-1,4-diene-3,17-dione (2, 19-hydroxy ADD), an intermediate of aromatase-catalyzed estrone formation from ADD, a suicide substrate of aromatase, is eliminated as formaldehyde, we examine chemical nature of removal of the 19-hydroxymethyl group. 19-Acetate 3 and 19-tert-butyldimethylsiloxy compound 4 are known to convert rapidly to estrone with treatment of NaOH or n-Bu4NF. Since compound 2 was unstable and unobtainable under these conditions, compounds 3 and 4 as equivalents to compound 2 were used in this study. The acetate 3 with 5 mol/l HCl in acetone and 10% KOH in MeOH along with the silyl ether 4 with 5 mol/l HCl in acetone and 1 mol/l n-Bu4NF in THF gave formaldehyde and estrone in which a ratio of the aldehyde to estrone was near 1. This result indicates that the 19-hydroxymethyl groups of compound 3 and 4 are eliminated as formaldehyde along with estrone derived from the steroid skeleton under the acid or base treatment. The findings suggest that a single hydroxylation at the 19 carbon of ADD (1) would be, chemically, all that was required for estrone formation.  相似文献

Inner membranes of Bradyrhizobium japonicum strain USDA 110 produced in vitro soluble and insoluble -(1–3),-(1–6) glucans. The reaction proceeded through a 90 kDa inner membrane intermediate protein; used UDP-glucose as sugar donor and required Mg2+. Gel chromatography of soluble glucans resolved a cyclic -(1–3) glucan with a degree of polymerization of eleven from a family of -(1–3),-(1–6) glucans with variable degree of polymerization higher than eleven. Bradyrhizobium strains BR4406 and BR8404 isolated from tree legume nodules in Southeast Brazil produce -(1–3),-(1–6) glucans very similar to that of B. japonicum. A 100 kDa protein was identified in these strains as intermediates in the synthesis of these glucans. Inner membranes of B. japonicum USDA110, B. japonicum I17, and Bradyrhizobium strains BR4406 and BR8404 incubated with UDP-glucose were unable to synthesize -(1–2) glucan and lacked the 235 kDa intermediate protein known to be involved in the synthesis of -(1–2) glucan in Agrobacterium tumefaciens, Rhizobium meliloti and Rhizobium loti.Abbreviations EPS= exopolysaccharides - CPS= capsular polysaccharides - LPS= lipopolysaccharides - AMA= Yeast extract-mannitol medium - TY= tryptone-yeast extract - PMSF= phenyl methyl sulfonil fluoride

Summary The solid state structures of two synthetic opioid peptides have been determined by X-ray single crystal analysis. The first X-ray structure is that of N,N-diallyl-(O-t-butyl)-Tyr-Aib-Aib-Phe-Leu-OMe (RTI02), a protected derivative of the -receptor selective antagonist ICI 174,864 (N,N-diallyl-Tyr-Aib-Aib-Phe-Leu-OH. ICI 174,864 is one of a series of rationally designed Aib-substituted enkephalin analogs which have shown site-specific antagonist properties. The second compound, the tetrapeptide Tyr-Tic-Phe-Phe-OH (TIPP), is one of a family of linear peptides containing the conformationally restricted Tic residue (tetrahydroisoquinoline-3-carboxylic acid). TIPP exhibits high affinity, selectivity and antagonism for the -receptor. Crystals of both peptides were obtained by slow evaporation and found to be monoclinic in space group P21. Unit cell dimensions for RTI02 were: a=13.619(4) , b=12.467(3) , c=13.750(4) , =96.03(4)o and V=2322(1) 3. The asymmetric unit contained one molecule of RTI02 and one molecule of methanol, giving a calculated density of 1.156 g cm-3. Unit cell dimensions for TIPP were: a=8.879(5) , b=20.146(8) , c=12.710(6) , =107.89(2)o and V=2164(2) 3. The asymmetric unit contained one molecule of TIPP and three molecules of acetic acid, giving a calculated density of 1.251 g cm-3. The RTI02 backbone has a double -bend, stabilized by two intramolecular hydrogen bonds. The TIPP backbone is also folded, but with only a single bend, stabilized by one intramolecular hydrogen bond and several hydrogen bonds to solvent molecules. Extraneuronal catecholamine uptake was investigated in isolated quiescent rat myocardial cells. By administration of (3H-)(–)noradrenaline concentration of 22 nmol/l up to 1000 mol/l the following data were obtained: (1) The KM of the uptake process amounted to 260 mol/l, the Vmax to 4.24 nmol/(10 min × mg Protein) corresponding to 179 nmol/(min × gWWt)(WWT = Wet Weight). (2) The uptake was largely inhibited by the uptake2-inhibitors corticosterone (100 mol/l), isoprenaline (IC so = 30.6 mol/l), and O-methylisoprenaline (IC50 = 2.1 pmol/l), but not by the uptake1-inhibitors cocaine (100 mol/l) and desipramine (10 mol/l). (3) The affinity-values KM and IC50 closely agreed with those already known, but the Vmax-value was higher than those obtained in whole rat hearts by a factor of at least 1.79. This is caused presumably by the voltage dependence of the uptake mechanism and the resulting inhibition of uptake 2 during the periods of depolarisation in beating hearts of other studies.  相似文献

We used paleolimnological methods to investigate spatial and temporal patterns of bulk sediment and nutrient (C, N, P) accumulation in Lakes Hell n Blazes (A = 154 ha, zmax = 240 cm), Sawgrass (A = 195 ha, zmax = 157 cm) and Washington (A = 1766 ha, zmax = 322 cm), in the Upper St. Johns River Basin, Florida. The study was designed to evaluate long-term changes in sedimentation and nutrient storage in the basin, and was one component of a larger project addressing flood control, wetland restoration, and water quality improvement. These three study lakes are wide, shallow waterbodies in the upper reaches of the St. Johns River channel. Sediment mapping indicates soft, organic deposits are distributed uniformly throughout Lakes Hell n Blazes and Sawgrass. In contrast, much of Lake Washington is characterized by sandy bottom, and organic sediment is largely restricted to the north end of the lake. Lakes Hell n Blazes and Sawgrass are effective sediment traps because dense submersed macrophytes and their associated epiphytes reduce flow velocity, intercept suspended particles, and utilize dissolved nutrients. Abundant Hydrilla, combined with short fetch, prevents resuspension and downstream transport of sediments. Larger Lake Washington is probably wind-mixed and resuspended organic sediments are redeposited to downstream sites. 210Pb-dated sediment cores show that organic sediment accumulation began in all three lakes before 1900, but that bulk sediment and nutrient accumulation rates have generally increased since then. The increases are probably attributable, in part, to anthropogenic activities including 1) hydrologic modifications that reduced flow rates in the channel, 2) discharge of nutrient-rich waters from urban, agricultural and ranching areas, and, 3) introduction and periodic herbicide treatment of the exotic macrophytes Eichhornia and Hydrilla.  相似文献

Bovine adenohypophysial tissue was dissociated by sequential enzymatic incubation in a continuous flow system. Dispersed cells separated into discrete fractions after centrifugation in isopycnic bovine serum albumin gradients. The dispersed and separated cells were prepared for microscopic identification and differential counts by centrifugal cytology. Radioimmunoassays for LH, FSH, TSH, and Prl were used to corroborate the differential counts and determine the homogeneity of the fractions. The thyrotrophs banded at an average density ( ) of 1.0417, the FSH-secretory cells at , the LH-secretory cells at , and the Prl-secretory cells at . A 7–16 fold enrichment of different cell populations was possible. In bovine hypophyses each hormone appears to be formed by specific cells: the average TSH concentrations of the thyrotrophs were 5.1 pg/cell and the average LH and FSH concentrations were 4.7 and 4.9 pg/cell for LH-and FSH-secreting cells, respectively. The average Prl concentration was 4.9 pg/cell for Prl-secreting cells.  相似文献

Summary Sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) of unreduced total protein extracts from the endosperm of hexaploid wheat revealed three high molecular weight protein bands (triplet bands) in a zone of heavy background streaking. Electrophoretic examination of 135 hexaploid cultivars showed at least five different patterns of these triplet bands. Nine durum wheat cultivars showed a single band only. Analysis of nullisomic-tetrasomic and ditelocentric lines of Chinese Spring wheat revealed that the slowest moving band (Tri-1) of the triplet was controlled by gene(s) on chromosome arm 1DS and the fastest moving band (Tri-3) by 1AS. The band with intermediate mobility (Tri-2) was found to be a hybrid aggregate of the subunits controlled by 1DS and 1AS. Using a non-reducing/reducing form of 2-dimensional (2-D) electrophoresis, these triplet bands were shown to be heterotetramers of four subunits designated D (M.W. 58,000), (22,000), A (52,000) and (23,000) where Tri-1=DD, Tri-2 = DA and Tri-3 = AA. With very low concentrations of 2-mercaptoethanol (ME), the tetramers dissociated into dimeric subunit pairs (D, A), the monomers being observed with higher concentrations of ME. The structure of these subunit pairs resembles that of the subunit pairs in the globulin storage proteins of oats and some legumes. The 2-D method employed in this study was useful also for separating low molecular weight (LMW) subunits of glutenin from the monomeric gliadins which have similar electrophoretic mobility in 1-D separation. It was shown that at least four of these LMW glutenin subunits are controlled by genes on 1DS and 1AS and at least one subunit is controlled by gene(s) on 1BS. This electrophoretic separation method has proven useful in understanding the aggregation behaviour of the seed proteins of wheat.  相似文献

Summary The carotenoid pigments of the myxobacterium Sorangium compositum were analyzed by chromatographical and chemical techniques and by visible, infra red, and mass spectroscopy. Besides -carotene, neurosporene, torulene, lycopene, and 1,2-dihydro-1-hydroxy--carotene, four new carotenoid glycosides were found. These pigments were identified as 1,2-dihydro-1-hydroxy-torulene glucoside ester (I), 1,2-dihydro-3,1-dihydroxy-torulene glucoside ester (III), 1,2-dihydro-1-hydroxy-torulene rhamnoside (II), and 1,2-dihydro-3,1-dihydroxytorulene rhamnoside (IV).Fifth communication on the carotenoids of myxobacteria. Nitrogen fixation of the Methanosarcina barkeri strains Fusaro (DSM 804) and 227 (DSM 1538) was found to be dependent on the presence of vanadium or molybdenum whereby molybdenum (added as Na2-molybdate) was preferred to vanadium (added as VCl3). Strain 227 showed less pronounced effects on diazotrophic growth with respect to vanadium and molybdenum. Rhenium (ReCl3) or tungsten (Na2-tungstate) could not replace vanadium or molybdenum. The optimum concentrations were found to be 2M for vanadium and 5M for molybdenum (strain Fusaro). This Mo optimum of methanogenesis was 10-fold higher with N2 than with NH4Cl as nitrogen source. A vanadium requirement with NH4Cl could not be detected. No interferences were observed if molybdenum and vanadium were added simultaneously under diazotrophic conditions. Growth yields were smallest for strain 227 grown diazotrophically ( =0.6g dw/mol in the presence of vanadium and =0.9g dw/mol in the presence of molybdenum), obviously higher for strain Fusaro grown diazotrophically ( =1.15g dw/mol in the presence of V and =1.4g dw/mol with Mo) and highest if M. barkeri was grown on NH4Cl as N-source ( =3.4g dw/mol with Mo, strain Fusaro).  相似文献

Two-dimensional (2D) gel electrophoresis of immunoprecipitated HLA-DR antigens from eight homozygous typing cells (HTC) expressing the HLA-DRw8 specificity revealed a clustering of polymorphic chain patterns into distinct electrophoretic variants. The variant patterns correlate with three discrete HLA-D clusters that are defined in the mixed leukocyte culture reaction (MLR) using DRw8-positive HTC. These HLA-D clusters have been provisionally designated Dw8.1, detected primarily in Caucasoids, Dw8.2, detected primarily in American Indians, and Dw8.3, detected predominantly in Orientals. All three HLA-Dw8.1 cell lines express a single DR-locus product as defined by immunoprecipitation with a DR-specific monoclonal antibody, P4.1. This DR chain is identical among the Dw8.1 cell lines and different from the DR chains of the Dw8.2 and Dw8.3 cell lines. Two separate Dw8.2 HTC express a shared DR chain that is slightly more basic than the 8.1 DR molecule; interestingly, one of these lines also expresses an additional DR-like chain not found in the other cells. Thus, the two lines defining the Dw8.2 cluster share one distinct class 11 molecule, but differ in another and therefore are not biochemically HLA-identical. Cells from the Dw8.3 cluster are likewise distinct from all other Dw8 clusters. One additional DRw8-positive HTC has been analyzed and found to be distinct from the Dw8.1, 8.2 and 8.3 clusters by both MLR and 2D gels. lmmunoprecipitates using monoclonal antibody 1B5 [anti-DR and anti-DQ(DS)] identify additional polymorphic class II variants among the cell lines tested. These data indicate that HLA-DRw8 is a public serologic specificity present on class II molecules expressed on multiple distinct haplotypes. These haplotypes differ from each other in expression of polymorphic class II molecules encoded by at least two HLA loci. They also differ in HLA-D, even though they all type as HLA-DRw8 homozygous. In Dw8.2, variation in expressed chains is not reflected in variation in HLA-D, indicating that MLR, as well as serologic typing, does not detect the full degree of allelic polymorphism within HLA.  相似文献

Objective

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of intensive physical exercise and acute psychological stress during high level athletic competition as reflected on the levels of salivary cortisol in elite artistic gymnasts (AGs).

Design

The study included 239 AGs (142 females-97 males) who participated in the European Championship of Gymnastics in 2006 and 81 adolescents (40 females-41 males), matched for age, as controls. All athletes participated voluntarily in all or parts of the study, providing samples or data for each of the variables measured. Height, weight, body fat, lean body mass (LBM), bone age and Tanner stage of puberty were assessed and data concerning the time of thelarche, adrenarche and menarche as well as, the onset and the intensity (hours per week) of training were obtained.

Methods

Saliva samples were collected, the morning before training and in the afternoon shortly after the competition. From controls, the saliva samples were collected in the morning. Cortisol concentrations were measured using a chemiluminescence method. Acute stress was assessed using a questionnaire designed for the study.

Results

No difference was found between morning and afternoon salivary cortisol levels in both male and female AGs (females: AM: 15.45 ± 7.45 nmol/l vs PM: 15.73 ± 9.38 nmol/l; males: AM: 10.21 ± 5.52 nmol/l vs PM: 9.93 ± 13.8 nmol/l, p > 0.05).Female AGs presented higher levels of morning salivary cortisol than female controls (p < 0.05). Both male and female AGs had higher degree of psychological stress in comparison with controls (p < 0.001, p < 0.013, respectively). Female AGs had higher morning and afternoon salivary cortisol levels (p < 0.01, p < 0.01, respectively) and higher degree of stress (p < 0.003) than males.

Conclusions

In elite AGs the diurnal rhythm of salivary cortisol has been abolished, probably due to the strenuous training and competition conditions. Female AGs presented higher levels of morning salivary cortisol and psychological stress compared to both male AGs and female controls. The long term consequences of these modifications of the HPA axis remain to be elucidated.  相似文献
