The role of melanin ‘badges of status’, in male–male competition has been well‐studied, in contrast, carotenoid based plumage has largely been examined in the context of female mate choice. Recent work has shown that carotenoid signals can also function in male–male competition, although the functions of the two types of signals is currently unclear. Here, we examine the relationships between colouration, dominance and aggression in the crimson finch Neochmia phaeton, a species where males have both conspicuous red carotenoid plumage and a black melanin patch. We examined the importance of carotenoid and melanin based signals in three contexts: 1) among free‐living birds interacting at a feeding station: we found that neither colour signal influenced the outcome of interactions; 2) in staged dyadic contest in captivity: we found that coloration from carotenoid pigments was positively related to the probability of winning a contest, while the size of the melanin plumage patch was not related to winning; and 3) in staged dyadic contests where male plumage colour had been masked: we found that the number of interactions required to determine dominance increased. While the underlying natural plumage colour was still important in these contests, birds with more intense carotenoid colouration were now more likely to lose. These results confirm carotenoid‐based signalling in male–male contests. However this signal is used in conjunction with other factors such as self‐assessment and body condition. Contrary to traditional expectations, the black melanin patch was not found to be important in this context.  相似文献

Many colour ornaments are composite traits consisting of at least four components, which themselves may be more complex, determined by independent evolutionary pathways, and potentially being under different environmental control. To date, little evidence exists that several different components of colour elaboration are condition dependent and no direct evidence exists that different ornamental components are affected by different sources of variation. For example, in carotenoid‐based plumage colouration, one of the best‐known condition‐dependent ornaments, colour elaboration stems from both condition‐dependent pigment concentration and structural components. Some environmental flexibility of these components has been suggested, but specifically which and how they are affected remains unknown. Here, we tested whether multiple colour components may be condition dependent, by using a comprehensive 3 × 2 experimental design, in which we carotenoid supplemented and immune challenged great tit nestlings (Parus major) and quantified effects on different components of colouration. Plumage colouration was affected by an interaction between carotenoid availability and immune challenge. Path analyses showed that carotenoid supplementation increased plumage saturation via feather carotenoid concentration and via mechanisms unrelated to carotenoid deposition, while immune challenge affected feather length, but not carotenoid concentration. Thus, independent condition‐dependent pathways, affected by different sources of variation, determine colour elaboration. This provides opportunities for the evolution of multiple signals within components of ornamental traits. This finding indicates that the selective forces shaping the evolution of different components of a composite trait and the trait's signal content may be more complex than believed so far, and that holistic approaches are required for drawing comprehensive evolutionary conclusions.  相似文献

Signalling theory predicts that signals should fulfil three fundamental requirements: high detectability, discriminability and, most importantly, reliability. Melanins are the most common pigments in animals. Correlations between genotypic and phenotypic qualities of the sender and size and morph of melanin‐based traits are known, but it is contentious whether melanin‐based colouration may signal any quality. We examined the effect of supplementing blackcaps (Sylvia atricapilla) with flavonoids, potent plant antioxidants, on plumage colouration. We demonstrate that melanin‐based colour can fulfil all requirements of signals of phenotypic condition. As predicted by sexual selection theory, flavonoid supplementation influenced only the sexually dichromatic black cap of males, whereas the female homologous trait and the sexually monochromatic back colouration remained unaffected. Using avian vision models we show that birds can estimate male flavonoid intake from colouration of males’ black cap. Because flavonoid ingestion can increase immune responsiveness in blackcaps, melanin head colouration may signal environmentally determined immune condition.  相似文献

Support against the condition‐dependence of melanin plumage signals has relied on data from species exhibiting both melanin‐ and carotenoid‐based plumage ornaments. As the mechanisms leading to variation in carotenoid‐ and melanin‐based plumage differ fundamentally, these systems may not be ideal to assess the condition‐dependence of melanin signals. Instead, we hypothesized that melanin‐plumage is more likely to signal condition in purely achromatic species. We performed a meta‐analysis reviewing evidence for condition‐dependent melanic plumage: we compared the net effect size for the relationship between melanin traits and condition in species that are achromatic versus species that also display a carotenoid‐based trait. Our results indicate that melanin plumage is condition‐dependent in species of both plumage types. Contrarily to our prediction, this finding suggests that melanin ornament condition‐dependence is not conditional on the context of other ornaments within a species. Instead, melanin ornaments should be viewed as potential condition‐dependent signals in all species.  相似文献

Many animals use coloration to communicate with other individuals. Although the signalling role of avian plumage colour is relatively well studied, there has been much less research on coloration in avian bare parts. However, bare parts could be highly informative signals as they can show rapid changes in coloration. We measured bill colour (a ubiquitous bare part) in over 1600 passerine species and tested whether interspecific variation in carotenoid‐based coloration is consistent with signalling to potential mates or signalling to potential rivals in a competitive context. Our results suggest that carotenoid bill coloration primarily evolved as a signal of dominance, as this type of coloration is more common in species that live in social groups in the nonbreeding season, and species that nest in colonies; two socio‐ecological conditions that promote frequent agonistic interactions with numerous and/or unfamiliar individuals. Additionally, our study suggests that carotenoid bill coloration is independent of the intensity of past sexual selection, as it is not related to either sexual dichromatism or sexual size dimorphism. These results pose a significant challenge to the conventional view that carotenoid‐based avian coloration has evolved as a developmentally costly, condition‐dependent sexual signal. We also suggest that bare part ornamentation may often signal different information than plumage ornaments.  相似文献

Carotenoid‐based colouration in feathers is widely accepted to be a reliable signal of the health of an individual, but the condition‐dependence of melanin‐based plumage ornaments has been highly debated. Using broods that were manipulated in size, we tested whether nutritional stress during rearing affected the carotenoid pigmentation in secondary feathers and the size, shape, and symmetry of melanin spots on breast plumage of northern flicker Colaptes auratus nestlings. Two measures of carotenoid colour (chroma and brightness) of secondary flight feathers did not vary according to brood size treatment, but in a larger dataset from the population, carotenoid chroma was positively associated with nestling mass. Nestlings from experimentally enlarged broods had smaller melanin spots than those from reduced broods, which is some of the first experimental evidence that melanin ornament size in growing nestlings is condition‐dependent. However, the shape and symmetry of the melanin breast spots was not associated with nestling mass. Sexual dimorphism was apparent in both types of pigmentation and future studies should investigate whether there are any trade‐offs for nestlings between investing in carotenoid colouration and melanisation and whether trade‐offs differ between the sexes.  相似文献

Visual signals such as plumage characteristics in birds often play a key role in the establishment of dominance in contests by acting as a badge of status that can be used to assess individual fighting ability. We studied the role of plumage colouration in males of the red bishop (Euplectes orix), a sexually dimorphic and polygynous weaverbird species occurring in sub‐Saharan Africa and breeding in dense colonies around water. Males are highly territorial and often engage in competition over limited resources such as breeding sites and potential mates. By experimentally staging male–male contests over a limited food source, we wanted to determine whether the orange–red breeding plumage in this species serves as a dominance signal between individuals, with males with redder plumage being dominant over those with duller plumage. In the first set of experiments, we staged contests between unfamiliar and unmanipulated males. The setup of the second set of experiments was identical to the first, with the exception that those males with the lowest chroma and hue values had their plumage experimentally reddened within the range of the natural variation. In addition to plumage colouration, we incorporated testosterone levels, body condition and age into the analysis of factors contributing to contest outcome. Our results show a consistent and strong age effect in both sets of experiments, which seems to be independent of plumage colouration, testosterone and body condition. This suggests that in the red bishop, the outcome of male–male competitions over limited resources is determined by age‐related acquired experience rather than by status signalling through plumage colouration.  相似文献

The evolution of multiple signals can be explained because they enhance the perception of a general message by recipients. Plumage coloration frequently acts as a condition‐dependent signal, so that species displaying different colour patches have the potential to transmit information on condition through a multiple signalling system. The Great Tit Parus major exhibits plumage colour patches generated by the main types of colour production, some of which, particularly those based on melanins and carotenoids, are known to be related to body condition. However, the colour expressions of all of the different colour types have never been investigated simultaneously to determine whether they function as multiple signals of condition. In addition, visual perception models have never been applied to a multiple signalling system in a wild population of birds. Here I present information that links body condition with the colour expression of almost all of the different plumage patches of male Great Tits captured during the winter. Birds in better condition had greater reflectance values at short wavelengths in all plumage patches, and this was especially so in the white (i.e. structural) colour of the cheeks. Plumage colour characteristics were calculated by means of avian visual models, suggesting that Great Tits have the capacity to perceive information contained in the plumage coloration of conspecifics. These results show that short‐wavelength reflectance has great potential to transmit biologically significant information on the body condition of birds, even in achromatic plumage patches.  相似文献

Sexually selected ornaments often function as condition-dependent signals of quality (or 'indicators'). When ornamentation is costly, only high-quality individuals can afford to produce the most elaborate signals. The plumage ornamentation of male red-billed queleas, Quelea quelea, is an ideal candidate for an indicator because it is continuously variable, conspicuous, sexually dimorphic, is displayed only during breeding and is partially based on carotenoid pigmentation. However, I show here that quelea plumage is not an indicator because first, plumage colour is not correlated with physical condition or age; second, plumage colour is a genetically determined phenotype that is unresponsive to environmental variation; third, different plumage characters have bimodal distributions; fourth, plumage characters vary independently of one another; and finally, plumage colour is not correlated with reproductive success. To my knowledge, this is the first demonstration of non-condition dependence in colourful and sexually dimorphic breeding ornamentation. Instead, plumage variation may function as a sexually selected signal of individual identity among territorial males that nest in huge, densely packed and highly synchronized colonies.  相似文献

Carotenoid‐based colour expression is frequently involved in sexual dichromatism, particularly in bird plumage, suggesting a role in sexual selection. Despite much work on expression of the carotenoid‐based ventral plumage coloration of the great tit (Parus major), which represents a popular model in evolution and ecology, a consensus on even the most basic demographic patterns of variation (e.g. age and sex differences) is lacking. This may reflect the use of variable methods for analysing colour variation, although what is not clear, either in this case or in general, is the extent to which these alternative methods are equally effective at describing age‐ and sex‐related dichromatism. Using data obtained over 4 years from a large sample of free‐ranging great tits, we examined how colour‐scoring methodology influences estimates of age‐ and sex‐related dichromatism. We compare: (1) principal components analysis‐derived scores; (2) tristimulus colour variables; (3) a visual model‐independent, carotenoid‐focussed colour score; and (4) two colour scoring methods based on avian visual models, examining how they assess colour variation with respect to age and sex to determine how methodology may influence results. We demonstrate clear age‐ and sex‐dependent expression of this colour trait, both in our own data and in meta‐analyses of results from great tit populations across Europe, and discuss the merits of the various colour scores, which yield very different estimates of the extent of age‐ and sex‐dependent dichromatism. We show variation is likely to be visible to conspecifics and propose a novel, visual model‐derived scoring system for describing variation in carotenoid‐based colour patches, where the perceived signal is divided into independent chromatic and achromatic components, in line with current understanding of visual perception. Male and female American goldfinches (Spinus tristis) express condition‐dependent carotenoid‐based plumage and bill coloration. Plumage color is relatively static, as pigments incorporated into feathers during the spring molt cannot be mobilized thereafter. In contrast, bill color is dynamic, reflecting changes in condition over short time periods. Previous studies have shown that male and female ornaments, though similar in expression, are differentially related to measures of immunocompetence, suggesting that the relationship between ornamentation and parasite infection may differ between the sexes. In this study, we evaluate the relationship between condition‐dependent ornamentation (plumage and bill color) and blood parasite infection in male and female American goldfinches. We captured goldfinches after completion of the pre‐alternate molt and prior to the onset of nesting and assessed prevalence of Trypanosoma parasites via blood smears. Plumage color strongly predicted trypanosome infection: Birds with more colorful plumage were less likely to present infections. In contrast, we detected no relationship between infection and bill color, which in other studies has been shown to dynamically reflect current condition. Sex did not affect the relationship between infection status and either ornament. Together, these results suggest that physiological pathways linking carotenoid ornamentation and infection may vary even within a single species.  相似文献

Males in many bird species develop elaborate carotenoid‐based plumage ornaments that play an important role as signals of individual quality in intra‐ or intersexual selection. In the present study, we investigated which of several factors related to male condition and health affect the brightness and coloration of the carotenoid‐based orange–red breeding plumage in males of the red bishop (Euplectes orix), a polygynous and sexually dimorphic weaverbird species. The study revealed a very complex pattern, with the relationships between plumage traits and both heterophil‐to‐lymphocyte ratio and blood parasite load varying considerably among seasons, suggesting a strong influence of environmental conditions. Furthermore, overall condition of males strongly affected the association pattern between plumage traits and other factors, with males in bad condition being forced to allocate resources away from plumage elaboration to body maintenance or the enhancement of immune functions, whereas males in good condition can afford to invest in plumage ornamentation without obvious detrimental effects on health. Thus, females cannot rely on plumage characteristics alone to gather information on male quality, but have to assess additional traits that advertise general male health status. Carotenoid‐based ornamental coloration has long been proposed to honestly signal quality due to its dependence on individual condition. Because migration can be one of the most stressful periods of an animal's annual cycle, developing colourful plumage may be particularly challenging for species in which migration and moult periods overlap or occur sequentially. The purpose of this study was to investigate pigmentary and condition‐dependent bases of carotenoid colour variation in a small migratory passerine, the golden‐crowned kinglet Regulus satrapa (Family Regulidae). We captured 186 male and female kinglets of various ages during fall migration in southwestern Ontario, Canada and recorded arrival date, body condition index, fat and pectoral muscle scores, wing mite infestation, and feather growth rate as measures of condition. We quantified crown coloration using reflectance spectrometry and analyzed feather carotenoids using high‐performance liquid chromatography. Yellow crown feathers of female kinglets contained only yellow hydroxycarotenoids, whereas orange feathers of males harboured a suite of eight carotenoid pigments. Males with longer wavelength orange crown hues deposited greater concentrations of ketocarotenoids, especially canthaxanthin. Female kinglets with longer wavelength crown hues and males with longer wavelength crown hues and more saturated crown coloration left for migration earlier in the year. Females with longer wavelength crown hues had fewer feather mites and tended to be in better condition. However, male kinglets with more saturated coloration possessed smaller pectoral muscles. This is the first study to identify plumage carotenoids in this North American bird family and to determine the pigmentary basis for both inter‐ and intrasexual colour variation. Our results provide further support for the condition‐dependence of carotenoid coloration and suggest that ornamental elaboration in both sexes may encode information about fall condition and migratory performance.  相似文献

Plumage coloration has provided important model systems for research on signal expression. Whilst it had previously been assumed that moulting provided the only mechanism to change plumage coloration, recent studies have shown plumage colours to be seasonally dynamic, with implications both for the quantification of expression and for any signalling role. However, the mechanistic processes underlying such change remain uncertain. Here, we describe within‐moult shifts in expression of a carotenoid‐based colour trait – the yellow ventral plumage of the great tit Parus major – over a nine‐month timespan. We report that plumage chromaticity (‘colour’) – but not achromaticity (‘brightness’) – exhibits a marked seasonal decline, independent of sex, age or body condition, and at a constant rate across twelve environmentally heterogeneous plots within our study site. To gain a greater understanding of the mechanisms underlying this change we employed a spectral reconstruction approach, that generates predicted spectra for any timepoint within the sampling period. By comparing spectra for both early and late in the moult we show that the seasonal decline in chromaticity is driven by both a marked reduction in ultraviolet (UV) reflectance and, to a lesser extent, loss of active carotenoid pigments. Thus, our study shows that seasonal loss of chromaticity in the great tit is driven by altered reflectance primarily in the UV section of the spectrum, a finding made possible by the use of spectral compartmentalisation and multi‐parallel modelling to produce reconstructed spectra. Whether change in plumage coloration influences signal function will depend on the dynamics of the signalling system but it could clearly inflate patterns such as assortative mating and should be considered in studies of colour expression.  相似文献

Colour ornamentation in animals is exceptionally diverse, but some colours may provide better signals of individual quality or more efficient visual stimuli and, thus, be more often used as sexual signals. This may depend on physiological costs, which depend on the mechanism of colour production (e.g. exogenously acquired colouration in passerine birds appears to be most sexually dichromatic). We studied sexual dichromatism in a sample of 27 Australasian parrot species with pigment- (melanin and psittacofulvin) and structural-based colouration, to test whether some of these types of colouration are more prominent in sexual ornamentation. Unlike passerines, in which long wavelength colouration (yellow to red) usually involves exogenous and costly carotenoid pigments, yellow to red colouration in parrots is based on endogenously synthesized psittacofulvin pigments. This allows us to assess whether costly exogenous pigments are necessary for these plumage colours to have a prominent role in sexual signalling. Structural blue colouration showed the largest and most consistent sexual dichromatism, both in area and perceptually relevant chromatic differences, indicating that it is often ornamental in parrots. By contrast, we found little evidence for consistent sexual dichromatism in melanin-based colouration. Unlike passerines, yellow to red colouration was not strongly sexually dichromatic: although the area of colouration was generally larger in males, colour differences between the sexes were on average imperceptible to parrots. This is consistent with the idea that the prominent yellow to red sexual dichromatism in passerines is related to the use of carotenoid pigments, rather than resulting from sensory bias for these colours.  相似文献

The yellow carotenoid-based plumage coloration of great tit Parus major nestlings is found to be paler in polluted and urban environments. Because carotenoid pigmentation is often considered to be a condition dependent trait in birds we wanted to find out whether food-limitation and poor nestling condition could explain the pale plumage colour in a polluted area. P. major nestlings were supplemented with variable diets along a well known heavy metal pollution gradient around a copper smelter: two food treatments with carotenoids, one food treatment with little carotenoid and one unsupplemented control. Our field experiment showed that nestlings in the polluted area grew better with carotenoid rich diets, while such effect was not found in the unpolluted area. Nestlings showed higher plasma carotenoid (lutein) levels and higher plumage carotenoid chroma values in the unpolluted area than in the polluted area. However, plasma lutein levels or plumage colour were not associated with heavy metal levels in nestling faeces (a proxy for dietary exposure). Our results provide only weak evidence for carotenoid-based colouration to be condition-dependent in great tit nestlings as we found a positive relationship between body mass and carotenoid chroma in the non-supplemented control group only. The positive relationship between body mass and plumage colour intensity is more likely to be produced by the fact that good availability of caterpillars, an important food source for P. major, also means a good availability of carotenoids to nestlings. Our results suggest that main reason for pale nestling plumage in the polluted area is lower quality invertebrate food, and not nutrition-related oxidative stress.  相似文献

Animal signals involved in sexual selection are often indicators of individual quality. The assumption that sexual characters such as breeding plumage may indicate immune state has rarely been tested in free‐living migratory birds, particularly in relation to innate immunity. If sexual characters indeed reflect immune condition, then these could be used to evaluate individual quality. Melanin is a common pigment used in animal communication that mitigates the effects of oxidative stress and has positive effects on energy homeostasis, important functions during the strenuous activity of long‐distance flights. However, melanin is also immunosuppressive, and the melanised patches of breeding plumage may to some extent compromise immune responsiveness. We studied melanin‐based secondary sexual characters (SSC) in a long‐distance migratory wader, the black‐tailed godwit Limosa limosa, and found that breeding plumage features of male and female godwits are linked to components of innate immunity. Males with a larger colour extension had higher circulating levels of haptoglobin and hemolysis activity, while they also presented a lower body condition; whereas females presented a negative trend between colour and bar extension and hemolysis activity, and a positive trend for natural antibodies. The association between signal, immune state and physical condition in males suggests a cost for signal production and immune condition during prenuptial migration. Sex differences in how signals relate with immune capacity are a likely consequence of sex‐specific signalling roles and energy demands. Our results indicate that male godwit breeding plumage reflects innate immunity state, and is therefore a likely signal for females to use during mate choice as an honest indicator of male's capacity to allocate energy/resources to both expensive traits during periods of energetic constraint.  相似文献

Yearling birds generally display duller colours than adults. This may be due to selection favouring birds with more intensely coloured plumage or to an increase in colour after the first complete moult. Most research to date on the topic has been carried out on species with structural plumage coloration or with carotenoid‐based coloration that is produced by the unmodified deposition of pigments. However, no study has been carried out on species whose carotenoids are metabolically modified before deposition. In this study, we assess age‐related changes in the carotenoid‐based coloration of European Serins, a species that metabolically processes carotenoids before they can be deposited into feathers. Birds were captured over consecutive years and we carried out both cross‐sectional and longitudinal analysis. Adults had significantly greater values of lightness and chroma than yearling birds. However, there were no changes in plumage colour when analysing the same individuals captured in subsequent seasons. Plumage lightness and chroma of adult males after moult were related to body mass, suggesting a role of body condition on plumage coloration. Our results suggest that changes in plumage coloration with age in European Serins are due to a selection process that favours more intensely coloured individuals.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Previous studies of Yellow Warblers (Setophaga petechia) indicate that males with heavy melanin‐based brown breast streaking are more territorial and obtain more extra‐pair copulations than lightly streaked males that provide more parental care and are cuckolded more often. Because carotenoid‐based plumage characters can also signal quality in male songbirds, we examined relationships between yellow carotenoid‐based breast coloration and brown breast streaking and measures of the reproductive performance of male and female Yellow Warblers in northwestern Ohio from April to June 2007–2008. We used an information theoretic approach to examine relationships between reproductive measures (daily nest survival rate and number of young fledged) and brown breast streaking, yellow breast coloration, extent of prealternate wing molt, age, year, and first‐egg date. Males with paler yellow breast plumage (Beta hat =–0.213) and those with more brown breast streaking (Beta hat =–0.000036) fledged fewer young, but we found no associations between number of young fledged per male and age, year, or extent of prealternate wing molt. In addition, none of the measured variables was associated with the number of young fledged per female. Age was positively associated with daily nest survival rates for male Yellow Warblers (Beta hat = 1.127), but we found no association between daily nest survival rate and brown breast streaking, yellow breast coloration, extent of prealternate wing molt, age, year, and first‐egg date. None of the measured variables was associated with daily nest survival for females (null model was top‐ranked). Because brown breast streaking and the intensity of yellow breast coloration of male Yellow Warblers were negatively related to number of young fledged, we suggest that these plumage characteristics function differently in male–female and male–male interactions; yellow breast coloration signals age and reproductive experience, whereas brown breast streaking signals degree of territoriality or parental care.  相似文献

Carotenoids are a large group of biochemicals, with similar properties, synthesised by bacteria, fungi, algae and plants. Vertebrates obtain these biologically active pigments through the diet, and they are a disproportionately common component of animal colour signals and play important roles in immune functions and as antioxidants. Carotenoids are believed to be a limited resource and because of the trade‐off between allocation of carotenoids to signals and to other functions, carotenoid based signals are often thought to be handicap signals. The purpose of this study was to investigate the signalling potential of carotenoid‐based tissue coloration in the great black‐backed gull Larus marinus. The intensity of carotenoid‐based coloration in bill, gape and eye‐ring coloration was investigated in relation to body condition, reproductive parameters, levels of immune activity, and sexual dimorphism. In males there was a positive relationship between colour intensity and body condition, but in females no such relationship was found. However, females with high colour intensity had larger eggs and clutches. Additionally, females with high red scores tended to have high density of circulating lymphocytes. There was no sexual dimorphism in coloration and there was a negative relationship between colour intensity and sampling time, which indicates that this coloration is most intensely expressed early in the breeding season. The results in this study suggest that carotenoid‐based coloration in great black‐backed gull are partly condition dependent and reveal information about individual quality in both males an females. Hence, it might have evolved as an important signal for assessing the quality of potential mates.  相似文献
