Normal cod eggs respond to insemination by a rapid cortical reaction followed by an increase in total osmolarity and a small increase in egg diameter. The chorion becomes harder, but this is a slower process reaching its maximum strength after c . 24 h. Bad eggs are characterized by a slower or incomplete cortical reaction, resulting in a slower rise in osmolarity and a softer chorion. Bad eggs rapidly lose their capacity for fertilization. In unfertilized eggs in sea water, no cortical reaction is observed. There is, however, a rise in total osmolarity and a hardening of the chorion.  相似文献

Eggs of bony fishes are enveloped by an egg envelope (chorion) in which a micropyle is present near the animal pole. Therefore, sperm penetration into the eggs is limited to the sperm entry site (SES), a region of plasma membrane just beneath the micropyle. In rose bitterling eggs, the SES transforms from a tuft of microvilli into a swollen mass (SM) that continues to plug the micropyle after sperm penetration. The present observations using the rose bitterling Rhodeus ocellatus ocellatus were conducted to examine: 1) whether or not sperm penetration is necessary for formation of the SM and 2) whether or not actin microfilaments are involved in the formation of the SM. Water activation without sperm transformed the SES from a tuft of microvilli into the SM, although it took a longer time for the transformation and the SMs were smaller than in the case of inseminated eggs. The SES presumably has the ability to transform into the SM upon activation of eggs in the present species. Cytochalasin B, which acts on actin microfilaments, did not prevent formation of the SM, irrespective of insemination or activation. The present observations suggest that sperm penetration is not necessary for SM formation and actin microfilaments do not participate in SM formation. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Abstract. The braconid parasitoid Asobara tabida Nees attacks larvae of several Drosophila species in fermenting substrates. Northwestern and central European populations of the parasitoid attack mainly D.subobscura Collin. Southern European parasitoids attack mainly D.melanogaster Meigen. Larvae of this last species can defend themselves against parasitoids by encapsulating the parasitoid egg. Parasitoids from southern European populations are better able to resist encapsulation of their eggs than their northwestern and central European conspecifics. The eggs of southern European parasitoids appear to have a 'sticky' egg chorion. As a result of this 'stickiness' the eggs become embedded in host tissue where they are not completely covered by the host's blood cells. This leads to, at most, partial encapsulation of the egg. Parasitoid larvae can escape from partially closed capsules.  相似文献

The chorion and perivitelline fluid of Atlantic salmon eggs were investigated by chemical and physical methods. The turgor pressure of the chorion in water hardened eggs was about 60 mm Hg. With newly stripped eggs in fresh water a similar pressure was achieved after about one day but the process of water uptake could be osmotically inhibited by adding high molecular weight substances to the external medium. Perivitelline fluid contained about 58 % water the remainder being a high molecular weight substance consisting mainly of protein but also containing significant quantities of carbohydrate and lipid. The functions of the chorion are discussed with reference to salmon eggs and also to marine pelagic fish eggs such as those of the plaice.  相似文献

1. In some lepidopterans, the newly hatched caterpillars feed on chorion (animal protein) as their first food. This is also a frequent behaviour of newly hatched caterpillars of Ascia monuste. 2. According to some parameters tested (time for pupation, number of adults, male imago weight, and fifth‐instar ingestion), chorion ingestion by first‐instar larvae affects adult performance positively. The ingestion of ultraviolet‐sterilised chorion provided the same positive effect on performance. It is thus suggested that young caterpillars may be benefiting from chorion nutritionally, and that chorion ingestion is a chain of events that leads to positive effects on insect performance. 3. Cannibalism in A. monuste was observed in newly hatched caterpillars and is related to the chorion ingestion behaviour. A condition for this to occur was the interval of time of hatching, which means that, if a group of caterpillars hatches very much before another group, once the caterpillars have ingested the chorion of their own eggs, there is a tendency for them to ingest the chorion of other eggs (including unhatched eggs) and, consequently, practice cannibalism. 4. Ascia monuste immatures are considered to be herbivorous, however it is important to know that they eat animal tissue (chorion and conspecific eggs).  相似文献

Homozygous Drosophila females bearing the ocelliless mutation are sterile and produce oocytes with abnormal chorions. It has been possible to determine in which tissues these defects reside by generating ovarian chimeras. Pole cells from ocelliless female embryos can give rise to functional oocytes surrounded by normal chorions when placed in a wild-type environment. Conversely, when wild-type pole cells are placed in homozygous ocelliless females, the oocytes that form from them have abnormal chorions and never give rise to progeny. Thus the chorion defect and sterility of the ocelliless mutation are not germ-line autonomous. Homozygous ocelliless ovaries will attach to the uterus when placed in a wild-type third instar larva, but few eggs are ever laid, and the chorions of stage 14 oocytes remain ocelliless in morphology. Wild-type ovaries continue to produce oocytes with normal chorion morphology when placed into ocelliless hosts, indicating that the ocelliless chorion defect is ovary autonomous. Thus the chorion defect of the ocelliless mutation resides in the ovarian somatic tissue, presumably the follicle cells.  相似文献

When transferred to sea water the chorion of cod and lumpsucker eggs harden, reaching a resistance of about 150 and 2000 g respectively. In sea water this hardening process is independent of fertilization. Studies of eggs kept in artificial sea water with various ionic compositions indicated, in the lumpsucker eggs, that a cortical reaction seems to be a prerequisite for the hardening process. Calcium is necessary for the reaction both in unfertilized and inseminated eggs, whereas hardening takes place in the absence of potassium, magnesium or sulphate. Addition of barium or strontium as a substitute for calcium only caused hardening in the presence of activating spermatozoa. Activating spermatozoa were also necessary for hardening of lumpsucker eggs kept in ovarian fluid, but such hardening only occurred if calcium and/or magnesium were added. The hardening of lumpsucker eggs was associated with profound changes in the thickness and surface appearance of the chorion.  相似文献

Analysis of chorion hardening of eggs of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
We estimated changes of chorion hardness of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) egg by the use of three parameters, namely increase of resistance of an egg to rupture by extraneously applied pressure, decrease of solubility of chorion proteins in 8 mol/L urea and a change in the content of γ-glutamyl-ε-lysine crosslink. Unfertilized egg chorions became hardened after egg activation. During chorion hardening, 49, 56 and 65 kDa protein components of the chorion gradually disappeared, high molecular weight intermediates (113,160–170 and higher than 250 kDa) were newly formed and, finally, all components became undetectable by sodium dodecylsulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The content of γ-glutamyl-ε-lysine (γ-Glu-ε-Lys) crosslink in the chorion increased after hardening. Chorion hardening was inhibited by the incorporation of monodansyl-cadaverine, a competitive inhibitor for transglutaminase (TGase), into the chorions. TGase activity was detected in unfertilized eggs and localized in the chorion fraction rather than in the ooplasmic fraction. The findings suggest that chorion hardening depends upon polymerization of the chorion components by TGase-dependent γ-Glu-ε-Lys crosslink formation.  相似文献

The structure of the chorion from the fertilized eggs of eight species of killifish, four Nothobranchiidae from tropical Africa and four Rivulidae species from South America and an Asian Cyprinidae (zebrafish), were investigated for possible structural similarities by transmission and scanning electron microscopy. The study of the possible chorion variations between seasonal fishes inhabiting temporary pools of tropical regions and other, non-seasonal species revealed variations in the several types of complex adornments found on the external chorion surface when compared with the less complex chorion of the zebrafish. The inner structure of the chorion of these killifish species comprises alternating electron dense and clear strata, with the number of strata varying by species as well as the thickness of the chorion. No obvious phylogenetic or ecological relationships were observed either between the chorion adornments and the inner organization of the chorion or between the seasonal and non-seasonal species. It is advised to perform studies with a larger sample of species that could show a relation either from ecological or phylogenetic parameters.  相似文献

Aleochara bilineata oviposits in soil microhabitats likely to contain the dipteran pupae that are hosts of its ectoparasitoid first instar larvae. The eggs of A. bilineata have a rigid chorion but they are nonetheless hydropic and, after 30 h of development, start to increase in volume and do so until 50 h. This increase in volume is due to absorption of water. The eggs increase their initial volume by a factor of 1.68 that corresponds to an increase of 44.44% of initial weight. To explain this augmentation in volume, we describe the modifications occurring in the egg chorion during hydropy. The increase in volume in such a rigid egg is made possible through the fragmentation of the chorion which, initially dense and regular, becomes fragmented. Such adaptation enables female A. bilineata to oviposit hydropic eggs in habitats where mechanical resistance is needed. Accepted: 29 October 2000  相似文献

Larvae from six Drosophila species of the melanogaster subgroup were compared for both the hemolymph concentration of hemocytes and the ability to encapsulate the eggs of the parasitoid Asobara tabida (Hymenoptera; Braconidae). Results showed a high correlation between the parasitized hosts' concentration of circulating hemocytes and their aptitude to form a hemocytic capsule around the parasitic eggs. Two conditions seem to be required for the encapsulation of A. tabida eggs to succeed: one condition, which may relate to the recognition of the parasite by the host defense system, is the occurrence of a primary hemocytic response, which gives rise to the amplification of the hemocyte population; the other condition is the presence in the parasitized hosts of a hemocyte load large enough for the cellular capsule to be completed before the parasitic egg becomes protected by embedment within the host tissues. Since the concentration in hemocytes of the parasitized hosts is partially related to the concentration in hemocytes before parasitization, Drosophila species carrying a high hemocyte load could be better predisposed to resist A. tabida. Results are discussed in regard to the importance of a non-specific, quantitative character, such as the host hemocyte load, for the co-evolutionary immune interactions between A. tabida and its Drosophila hosts.  相似文献

An immuno‐probe against a glycoprotein in the egg chorion was developed for egg identification. The 97 kD glycoprotein in the chorion of unfertilized eggs of Epinephelus malabaricus was isolated and separated by SDS‐PAGE as an antigen to induce antibody from rabbit. The reactivity of the antibody as the immuno‐probe to E. malabaricus eggs was significantly positive, and was specific in that it did not react with the eggs of other fish species. The immuno‐probe should be useful in identifying the eggs of E. malabaricus among mixed egg populations.  相似文献

Two alternative reproductive modes are present in fishes and reflect the age-specific mortality encountered through ontogenesis. Life-history hypotheses suggest that semelparity (i.e. death after a single reproductive event) evolves when the ratio of juvenile to adult survival is relatively high. Conversely, a relatively low ratio of juvenile to adult survival will favour iteroparity (i.e. death after two or more reproductive events). Fisheries management associates capelin (Mallotus villosus) spawning with mass mortality and semelparity even though life history models developed for this species suggest that females may follow an iteroparous trajectory. Capelin may spawn either inter-tidally on the beach or offshore in deeper, ocean waters but post-spawning survival and potential iteroparity has been notoriously difficult to assess in natural populations. Through a series of aquarium experiments we tested post-spawning survivability in a beach spawning and an ocean spawning population. The findings demonstrate that capelin which spawn offshore are absolute semelparous (death of both genders) while beach spawning capelin are iteroparous irrespective of sex. Beach spawning capelin regenerated ripe gonads from one spawning season to the next and provides the first conclusive evidence that capelin is physiologically capable of an iteroparous reproductive mode. The potential physical and biological processes which generate certain reproductive patterns in capelin are summarized and discussed in relation to life history hypotheses. We suggest that capelin is a facultative semelparous species in which dynamic changes within the semelparity-iteroparity continuum may occur as a result of subtle interactions between the spawning habitat, physical forcing, and predatory pressure.  相似文献

Eggs and all nymphs of these species were studied employing light microscopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The major differences observed by LM in the eggs were related to the presence and the distribution of pores on the surface of their chorion. Morphological differences among three nymphal stages (1st, 3rd, and 5th) development of each species were observed. The differential characteristics are chromatic and in the shape of connexival spots. The ultrastructure of the ventral region of the head and the IX, X, and XI abdominal segments (anal tube) of the both species were described demonstrating morphological differences that can be used for diagnosis of the species.  相似文献

Egg specific gravity is a function of egg volume, chorion volume, perivitelline space (PVS) and the specific gravity of chorion and ovoplasm. Experimental studies on cod ( Gadus morhua L.), a marine multiple batch spawner, showed that approx. forty per cent of the chorion volume is incorporated between batches and that the chorionic material has a mean specific gravity of 1·20 (range: 1·14–1·35). The chorion volume and specific gravity are low at the end of the spawning period in extremely fecund fish. Specific gravity of ovoplasm was observed to be 1·017 in marine eggs and calculated to be about 1·008 in brackish water eggs. Inherent variation in PVS is found to have little influence on egg specific gravity. With the other variables constant, egg specific gravity is inversely related to egg volume supported by studies on single batches of eggs. Measurements on every batch of eggs reveal that the production of large eggs (>1·3 mm) gives low density eggs initially and high density eggs towards the end of spawning, while the production of small eggs (<1·3mm) gives moderate specific gravity. These observations are discussed in relation to vertical distribution of the eggs and reproductive success of recruit and repeat spawners. There are indications that repeat spawners produce larger eggs.  相似文献

Specific antibodies against the major chorionic glycoproteins (ZI1 -2 and ZI3) of unfertilized eggs were used to analyze the differences in the chorion and its surrounding constituents before and after fertilization. The glycoproteins in the inner layers of the chorion and its surrounding material were specifically stained by both of the antibodies. Thirty and 60 min after activation, the thickness of the chorion's inner layers was already reduced and the micropylar canal was closed. At the same time, the broadly diluted mucous area (DMA) of glycoproteins on the outermost layer of the chorion in unfertilized eggs was modified to a thin, compact layer. When unfertilized eggs were treated with trypsin, the inner third portion of the micropylar canal closed and the glycoproteins in the DMA were digested. The incidence of sperm entry into the micropyle of these eggs was extremely reduced. These results suggest that in medaka eggs, the chorionic glycoproteins in the DMA on the chorion surface, which have an affinity for spermatozo, play an important role in sperm guidance into the micropyle.  相似文献

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is a technique that has been successfully used for assisting reproduction in mammals. However, this method is still not reliable in nonmammalian species, including teleosts. We succeeded in producing medaka individuals by ICSI with a rate of 13.4% (28 hatched embryos out of 209 eggs fertilized by ICSI), the best value reported so far in teleosts, including zebrafish and Nile tilapia. Although the technique was based on that developed for mammalian eggs, some critical modifications were made to adjust it to the medaka egg, which has a thick and hard envelope (the chorion) and a single sperm entry site (the micropyle). Medaka ICSI was performed by injecting a demembranated spermatozoon into an egg cytoplasm through the micropyle 10-15 sec after egg activation induced by a piezo-actuated vibration, the site and timing of sperm penetration being consistent with those in normal fertilization in medaka. To increase the efficiency of ICSI in medaka, we found that the fertilization by ICSI should precisely mimic the fertilization by insemination with intact sperm, both spatially and temporally. The success rate of ICSI was highly variable in batches of eggs (ranging from 0% to 56%), suggesting that the conditions of eggs are important factors in stabilizing the production of individuals by ICSI. The success in medaka ICSI provides a basis for future research to understand the basic mechanisms in gamete biology of teleosts as well as for development of new technology that can yield valuable applications in fisheries science.  相似文献

Freshwater algal biomass and orange and lemon peels were assessed as tissue paper pulp supplements. Cellulose and hemicellulose contents of algal biomass were 7.1% and 16.3%, respectively, whereas for citrus peels cellulose content ranged from 12.7% to 13.6% and hemicellulose from 5.3% to 6.1%. For all materials, lignin and ash content was 2% or lower, rendering them suitable for use as paper pulp supplements. The addition of algal biomass to paper pulp increased its mechanical strength significantly. However, brightness was adversely affected by chlorophyll. The addition of citrus peels in paper pulp had no effect on breaking length, increased bursting strength and decreased tearing resistance. Brightness was negatively affected at proportions of 10%, because citrus peel particles behave as coloured pigments. The cost of both materials is about 45% lower than that of conventional pulp, resulting in a 0.9-4.5% reduction in final paper price upon their addition to the pulp.  相似文献

The fish egg is surrounded by a thick envelope called the chorion. The fertilizing spermatozoon enters the egg through a canal-like structure in the chorion, the micropyle. Examination of micropyle at fertilization is difficult if eggs are large and have no distinct landmarks surrounding the micropyle, or if they are positively buoyant in water. Eggs of many commercially important fishes (e.g., flounder, sea bream and eel) are buoyant in water or only slightly adhere to solid objects (e.g., sands, rock and water plants), which makes observation of spermatozoa at fertilization difficult. Here, we report that such eggs can be firmly attached to plastic and glass dishes that have been previously coated with poly-L-lysine. These adhering eggs can be fertilized and develop normally on the dishes. Observations of micropyles of three fish species, before and after sperm entry are presented.  相似文献
