BackgroundIn low-income countries, pregnant women do not have easy access to health care, especially in rural and peri-urban areas. In this context, they can be surprised by the uterine contractions that precede childbirth and sometimes find themselves giving birth at home or on the way to the nearest health facility (located miles away from their home). In view of the development of an external uterine electrohysterogram acquisition system for labour prediction, a review of the literature on electrodes and their characteristics is necessary.MethodsA comprehensive literature review was conducted to collate information on the use of electrodes in external EHG recording and their characteristics.ResultsWet electrodes based on Ag/AgCl redox chemistry are the most common type of electrodes for EHG, employed in different configurations on the pregnant woman’s abdomen. All positioning configurations are around the vertical median axis if they are not placed directly on it. Positioning below the navel seems to be the most efficient. The number of source, reference, and ground electrodes used varies from one author to another, as does the distance between the electrodes.ConclusionTwo well-positioned source electrodes on the vertical median axis, with ground electrode on the right side of the hip and reference one on the left side, are able to generate a good external EHG recording signal. The minimum allowed inter-electrode distance is approximately 17.5 to 25mm.  相似文献

A model for chemotaxis in a bacteria-substrate mixture introduced by Keller and Segel, which is described by nonlinear partial differential equations, is studied analytically. The existence of traveling waves is shown for the system in which the substrate diffusion is taken into account and the chemotactic coefficient is greater than the motility one, and the instability of traveling waves is discussed.  相似文献

The lack of systematic investigations on sex-related differences in motor unit behaviour poses a challenge in understanding and optimizing health and performance in males and females. Limited investigations revealed that sex differences in motor unit behaviour might be present in human muscles. This review summarizes the current knowledge on sex differences in motor unit behaviour and potential factors that may contribute to these differences. We show significant under-representation of female participants in motor unit studies and a limited number of studies investigating sex differences in motor unit behaviour. We place the current insights within the context of methodological limitations and outline several recommendations and future directions to improve female representation in this research area. We conclude that there is an urgent need to gather more data in females and investigate sex differences in motor unit behaviour. The knowledge gained could be used to develop sex-specific approaches to improve neuromuscular performance and rehabilitation.  相似文献

Xyloglucan is one of the major hemicellulose components of the plant cell wall in majority of dicots and many monocots. Xyloglucanases break down xyloglucan and their role is implicated in the process of plant growth and pathogenesis. They are ubiquitously found in plants as well as in a variety of bacteria, fungi, actinomycetes, etc. In microbes, they are majorly extracellular and are active at a wide range of pH and temperature. They are a diverse group, with varying physicochemical and/or functional properties as well as substrate specificities and thereby the products they give rise to. Their biotechnological potential is immense, with applications in paper and pulp, textile, pharmaceutical and food industries as well as in production of biomaterials and biofuels. This review attempts to give an overview about microbial xyloglucanases and includes important sources, biochemical properties, industrial applications and a brief look at their catalytic mechanisms and GH families.  相似文献

The dynamic behavior of scalp potentials (EEG) is apparently due to some combination of global and local processes with important top-down and bottom-up interactions across spatial scales. In treating global mechanisms, we stress the importance of myelinated axon propagation delays and periodic boundary conditions in the cortical-white matter system, which is topologically close to a spherical shell. By contrast, the proposed local mechanisms are multiscale interactions between cortical columns via short-ranged non-myelinated fibers. A mechanical model consisting of a stretched string with attached nonlinear springs demonstrates the general idea. The string produces standing waves analogous to large-scale coherent EEG observed in some brain states. The attached springs are analogous to the smaller (mesoscopic) scale columnar dynamics. Generally, we expect string displacement and EEG at all scales to result from both global and local phenomena. A statistical mechanics of neocortical interactions (SMNI) calculates oscillatory behavior consistent with typical EEG, within columns, between neighboring columns via short-ranged non-myelinated fibers, across cortical regions via myelinated fibers, and also derives a string equation consistent with the global EEG model.  相似文献

Codling moth (CM), Cydia pomonella (L), is regarded as the most serious insect pest of apple worldwide. A variety of problems associated with the traditional use of non-selective insecticides for its control include: untoward environmental effects, insecticide resistance, negative impacts on natural enemies, and safety for pesticide applicators and the food supply. Concerns about these consequences have increased the interest in and development of alternative means for CM control that have little or no impact on humans, beneficial organisms and sensitive ecosystems. An effective and selective alternative to chemical insecticides for CM control is the CM granulovirus (CpGV). The virus was first isolated in Mexico and subsequently studied and evaluated in Europe and North America. A variety of research including pathology, pathogenesis and histopathology of the virus, determination of virulence, development of production methods, field use, factors that influence efficacy, commercial development, formulation, and CM resistance to the virus has been conducted. Commercial products of CpGV are now produced in Europe and North America and used by orchardists worldwide. In this paper we present a comprehensive review of the CpGV literature and the role of the virus in integrated pest management.  相似文献

Embryonic morphogenesis occurs along three orthogonal axes. While the patterning of the anterior-posterior and dorsal-ventral axes has been increasingly well characterized, the left-right (LR) axis has only recently begun to be understood at the molecular level. The mechanisms which ensure invariant LR asymmetry of the heart, viscera, and brain represent a thread connecting biomolecular chirality to human cognition, along the way involving fundamental aspects of cell biology, biophysics, and evolutionary biology. An understanding of LR asymmetry is important not only for basic science, but also for the biomedicine of a wide range of birth defects and human genetic syndromes. This review summarizes the current knowledge regarding LR patterning in a number of vertebrate and invertebrate species, discusses several poorly understood but important phenomena, and highlights some important open questions about the evolutionary origin and conservation of mechanisms underlying embryonic asymmetry.  相似文献

Microwave-induced mechanical stress waves were studied in simulated muscle tissue. Pulsed microwave energy at 5.655 GHz induced pressure waves that were recorded with a hydrophone transducer. Each pulse produced a peak power density greater than 1.5 kW/cm2. Microwave absorption measurements within the model showed energy deposition to be mostly confined to a region within 2 cm of the irradiated surface. The average specific absorption rate (SAR) at the surface of the sample was about 100 W/kg. The microwave-induced stress wave propagated at a velocity of 1,600 m/sec with peak pressures of approximately 300 pascals and was detectable after having traveled a total distance of 0.61 m on a path that included two reflections at model-container interfaces.  相似文献

Lack of degradability and the closing of landfill sites as well as growing water and land pollution problems have led to concern about plastics. With the excessive use of plastics and increasing pressure being placed on capacities available for plastic waste disposal, the need for biodegradable plastics and biodegradation of plastic wastes has assumed increasing importance in the last few years. Awareness of the waste problem and its impact on the environment has awakened new interest in the area of degradable polymers. The interest in environmental issues is growing and there are increasing demands to develop material which do not burden the environment significantly. Biodegradation is necessary for water-soluble or water-immiscible polymers because they eventually enter streams which can neither be recycled nor incinerated. It is important to consider the microbial degradation of natural and synthetic polymers in order to understand what is necessary for biodegradation and the mechanisms involved. This requires understanding of the interactions between materials and microorganisms and the biochemical changes involved. Widespread studies on the biodegradation of plastics have been carried out in order to overcome the environmental problems associated with synthetic plastic waste. This paper reviews the current research on the biodegradation of biodegradable and also the conventional synthetic plastics and also use of various techniques for the analysis of degradation in vitro.  相似文献

In recent years, research into biological and medical effects of millimeter waves (MMW) has expanded greatly. This paper analyzes general trends in the area and briefly reviews the most significant publications, proceeding from cell-free systems, dosimetry, and spectroscopy issues through cultured cells and isolated organs to animals and humans. The studies reviewed demonstrate effects of low-intensity MMW (10 mW/cm2 and less) on cell growth and proliferation, activity of enzymes, state of cell genetic apparatus, function of excitable membranes, peripheral receptors, and other biological systems. In animals and humans, local MMW exposure stimulated tissue repair and regeneration, alleviated stress reactions, and facilitated recovery in a wide range of diseases (MMW therapy). Many reported MMW effects could not be readily explained by temperature changes during irradiation. The paper outlines some problems and uncertainties in the MMW research area, identifies tasks for future studies, and discusses possible implications for development of exposure safety criteria and guidelines. This article describes a large-scale model of turtle visual cortex that simulates the propagating waves of activity seen in real turtle cortex. The cortex model contains 744 multicompartment models of pyramidal cells, stellate cells, and horizontal cells. Input is provided by an array of 201 geniculate neurons modeled as single compartments with spike-generating mechanisms and axons modeled as delay lines. Diffuse retinal flashes or presentation of spots of light to the retina are simulated by activating groups of geniculate neurons. The model is limited in that it does not have a retina to provide realistic input to the geniculate, and the cortex and does not incorporate all of the biophysical details of real cortical neurons. However, the model does reproduce the fundamental features of planar propagating waves. Activation of geniculate neurons produces a wave of activity that originates at the rostrolateral pole of the cortex at the point where a high density of geniculate afferents enter the cortex. Waves propagate across the cortex with velocities of 4 m/ms to 70 m/ms and occasionally reflect from the caudolateral border of the cortex.  相似文献

Pregnancy regulation in the dog is not yet fully elucidated. Since plasma progesterone concentrations are similar in pregnant versus non-pregnant animals, it is a poor reflection on CL function and progesterone metabolism. Increased progesterone secretion by the CL in pregnant animals follows implantation and relaxin secretion by the feto-placental units. Progesterone is absolutely required to maintain pregnancy and no placental sources of progesterone have been identified. Pregnancy can be artificially maintained by progesterone administration. Prolactin secretion appears to be increased in response to the increase in relaxin production and occurs independent of estrogen production by the CL. The respective roles of LH, FSH and prolactin are still unclear, with considerable conflicting evidence among studies. However, it appears that prolactin is absolutely required, whereas LH is either permissive or facilitates CL function during pregnancy. Pre-implantation events are still poorly defined in the bitch, and no embryonic factors have been isolated or purified, preventing early pregnancy diagnosis. Parturition occurs following luteolysis, which results from the release of prostaglandin F(2alpha), which begins 36h prepartum in a process similar to that observed in other species. The role of estrogens at the time of parturition remains undefined.  相似文献

Tissue interaction plays a major role in many morphogenetic processes, particularly those associated with skin organ primordia. We examine travelling wave solutions in a tissue interaction model for skin pattern formation which is firmly based on the known biology. From a phase space analysis we conjecture the existence of travelling waves with specific wave speeds. Subsequently, analytical approximations to the wave profiles are derived using perturbation methods. We then show numerically that such travelling wave solutions do exist and that they are in good agreement with our analytical results. Finally, the biological implications of our analysis are discussed.  相似文献

Remission rates remain low among adult patients with relapsed Philadelphia chromosome-negative acute lymphoblastic leukemia (Ph ALL). The standard 4-week reduction chemotherapy regimen cannot be administered due to serious hematopoietic toxicity and infection during induction therapy, which can decrease the elimination of blast cells. In this study, a modified shortened P-CIOD chemotherapy protocol (comprising pegaspargase, cyclophosphamide, idarubicin, vindesine, and dexamethasone) was used as a reinduction therapy for relapsed Ph ALL. Remarkably, 80% (4 out of 5) of the patients achieved complete remission (CR) with minimal residual disease (MRD) negativity and without treatment-related mortality. Two patients were lost to follow-up after consolidation treatment, while the remaining three patients survived. The longest disease-free survival (DFS) recorded was 27 months. The results suggest that the novel protocol shows a favorable second complete remission (CR2) with low toxicity for adult patients with relapsed Ph ALL.  相似文献

The study of muscle activity using surface electromyography (sEMG) is commonly used for investigations of the neuromuscular system in man. Although sEMG has faced methodological challenges, considerable technical advances have been made in the last few decades. Similarly, the field of animal biomechanics, including sEMG, has grown despite being confronted with often complex experimental conditions. In human sEMG research, standardised protocols have been developed, however these are lacking in animal sEMG. Before standards can be proposed in this population group, the existing research in animal sEMG should be collated and evaluated. Therefore the aim of this review is to systematically identify and summarise the literature in animal sEMG focussing on (1) species, breeds, activities and muscles investigated, and (2) electrode placement and normalisation methods used. The databases PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Vetmed Resource were searched systematically for sEMG studies in animals and 38 articles were included in the final review. Data on methodological quality was collected and summarised. The findings from this systematic review indicate the divergence in animal sEMG methodology and as a result, future steps required to develop standardisation in animal sEMG are proposed.  相似文献

Outcomes research examines the end results of medical interventions, taking into account patients' experiences, preferences, and values. The purpose of assessing outcomes is to provide evidence on which to base clinical decisions. The assessment of outcomes in aesthetic surgery is especially pertinent because patient satisfaction is the predominant factor in determining success. In cosmetic surgery, various scales have been used to assess outcomes. Unfortunately, none of these methods has achieved widespread use. The adoption of broadly accepted, relevant scales to measure outcomes would be advantageous, because this would allow the comparison of techniques, quantification of positive effects, and identification of patients unlikely to benefit from surgery. The purpose of this study was to critically review the present literature to identify the appropriate instruments to assess outcomes in aesthetic surgery. After a comprehensive review of aesthetic surgery outcome instruments, the authors identified body-image and quality-of-life measures to be of the greatest value in determining aesthetic surgery outcomes. These conclusions were based on a critical evaluation of the feasibility, validity, reliability, and sensitivity to change of these measures. The Multidimensional Body-States Relations Questionnaire (MBSRQ), a psychological assessment of body image, was selected as a potential candidate for further study. Two additional body-image assessment instruments, the Facial Appearance Sorting Test (FAST) and the Breast Chest Ratings Scale (BCRS), may be useful in the assessment of rhinoplasty and breast surgery, respectively. The Derriford Scale (DAS59), an instrument that assesses appearance-related quality of life, was also selected. In addition, the authors recommend the use of a generic, utility-based quality-of-life instrument, such as the Health Utilities Index (HUI) or the EuroQol (EQ-5D).  相似文献

目的

分析体外受精-胚胎移植(IVF-ET)患者的子宫微生物对妊娠结局的影响, 并探讨影响子宫微生物群分布的因素。

方法

选取2019年10月-12月在北部战区总医院生殖医学中心行IVF-ET治疗的139例患者为研究对象。入组患者均于移植手术前做阴道微生态检查。术后从移植导管尖端及外鞘配对获取患者的子宫内膜液和宫颈粘液进行微生物培养, 采用基质辅助激光解吸电离飞行时间质谱(MALDI-TOF MS)鉴定宫腔和宫颈微生物。根据质谱法微生物鉴定结果并按优势菌是否为乳杆菌属菌群进行分组, 即乳杆菌属主导组, 非乳杆菌属主导组和鉴定阴性组。

结果

宫腔和宫颈菌属分布一致性尚可(Kappa=0.494)。人绒毛膜促性腺激素(HCG)阳性率在宫腔和宫颈均表现为非乳杆菌属主导组显著低于乳杆菌属主导组(60.0%vs87.2%, P < 0.017;65.7%vs 97.9%, P < 0.017)。着床率及临床妊娠率均在宫腔表现为非乳杆菌属主导组显著低于乳杆菌属主导组(44.7%vs 68.6%, P < 0.017;52.0%vs 83.0%, P < 0.017)。宫颈微生物描述着床率及临床妊娠率差异无统计学意义(P > 0.017)。宫腔中检出乳杆菌属的患者其临床妊娠率显著高于未检出者(83.0%vs 65.2%, P < 0.017)。移植日阴道微生态状况与E2水平是子宫微生物群分布差异的影响因素。

结论

当宫腔微生物以非乳杆菌属为主导时, IVF-ET助孕患者的HCG阳性率、着床率和临床妊娠率显著降低。移植日阴道微生态失调或E2过高可能增加子宫非乳杆菌属检出的风险。

From boxcore and dredge samples taken along a depth transect across the Faroe Shetland Channel (FSC) in 1997 and 1999, molluscs were sorted and identified. On the basis of their numerical abundance, the stations could be clustered into three groups, reflecting the depth extension of the main water masses in the FSC. Between 400 and 500 m depth, both the number of taxa per sample and the number of specimens, were highest. Bivalves were mainly caught by the boxcorer and the dredge was best suited to collect the epifaunal gastropods. According to the literature, at mid-slope depths, resuspension is increased by the action of internal waves, which leads to the development of intermediate nepheloid layers. This increased concentration of suspended matter may serve as a food source of low quality. Likewise the low amounts of suspended matter with a relatively high quality of particulate organic matter, such as from ∼400 and ∼700 m may act similarly and explain the relative high abundance of filter feeders at these depths. However, in the various multivariate analyses we could not distinguish the fauna from these depths from that collected from other sites. We observed, however, a pattern in the depth distribution of feeding guilds across the slope of the FSC. Deposit feeders demonstrated a trend of decreasing numbers with depth. Filter-feeding taxa were found to have peaks at depths of approximately 350 m, between 500 and 600 m and between 700 and 800 m. This observation supports the idea that the fauna at the deep sites reflects the locally high cross-slope currents and the subsequent increased amounts or availability of food with a better quality, which seems to be related to resuspension events.  相似文献

Maternal undernutrition may result in a greater deprivation of the fetus than has previously been believed. The infant not only may be "light for dates" but also has an increased risk of perinatal disability or death secondary to gross neurologic and developmental abnormalities.
