Urotensin-II (U-II) was originally considered to be exclusively the product of the caudal neurosecretory system (CNSS) of teleost fish, but it has now been demonstrated that U-II is widely expressed in peripheral tissues and nervous structures of species from lampreys to mammals. However, very little is known regarding the physiological effects of this peptide in its species of origin. In the present review, we summarize the most significant results relating to the cardiovascular, ventilatory, and motor effects of centrally and peripherally administered synthetic trout U-II in our experimental animal model, the unanesthetized trout Oncorhynchus mykiss. In addition, we compare the actions of U-II with those of other neurohormonal peptides, particularly with the actions of urotensin-I, a 41-amino acid residue peptide paralogous to corticotropin-releasing hormone that is co-localized with U-II within neurons of the CNSS.  相似文献

Over‐winter survival of salmonids in streams is thought to be an important population regulation mechanism. Yet because of the difficulty of conducting field studies due to adverse weather or ice conditions, compared to other seasons, salmonid ecology during winter is least understood. Consequently, we sought to examine interspecific feeding associations of an important salmonid stream assemblage in the Lake Ontario watershed during winter. The diets of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) parr, brown trout (S. trutta) parr, and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) parr were significantly different in February but not in March. Salmonid diets differed from the benthos and the drift during both months. Dipterans (chironomids, simuliids, and tipulids) and ephemerellids were the major prey taxa consumed. All three species fed more heavily on prey items from the benthos than from the drift. The diet of Atlantic salmon had the highest similarity to the benthos whereas the diet of brown trout had the lowest similarity to the drift. All three salmonid species generally selected ephemerellids, limnephilids, and chironomids and avoided elmids. These winter feeding observations are the first reported for this specific salmonid assemblage and will help managers better understand interspecific associations during this critical period.  相似文献

1. The effects of predation risk, fish density and discharge on habitat use by juvenile brown trout, Salmo trutta, in four artificial streams were studied. Each stream contained three habitats, riffles, runs and pools, the latter two each being further divided into shallow margins and deeper mid-regions. 2. The presence of northern pike, Esox Indus, caused trout to decrease use of pool midregions, where pike also occurred, and to increase use of other habitats. Increasing the number of trout caused trout to increase use of pools and the shallow margins of runs. Decreasing discharge reduced the area of the run and pool margins covered by water, thereby reducing use of these areas by trout. 3. Habitat selection indices for the different treatments were calculated. The data indicated that riffles and the mid-regions of runs were preferred habitats, whereas run margins and pools were inferior habitats used when intraspecific fish densities were high. 4. Despite density- and discharge-dependent habitat use by trout, the number of trout consumed by pike was independent of trout density and discharge. 5. The results reveal the flexibility of habitat use by trout and illustrate the potential danger of applying data on habitat use in one stream to others where habitat availability and bioric interactions may differ.  相似文献

Replication banding technique was applied to the chromosomes of Salmo salar, Salmo trutta, and Oncorhynchus mykiss. The in vitro technique has proved more advantageous than the in vivo technique due to a higher number of bands obtained. The comparison of these replication banding patterns has revealed that some chromosomes of Salmo trutta karyotype appeared associated with Salmo salar and Oncorhynchus mykiss karyotypes by single chromosomal rearrangements.  相似文献

Measurement of lactate dehydrogenase in reciprocal hybrids of trout during development revealed that a maternal effect was involved in the regulation of enzyme levels until resorption of the yolk sac was completed. Malate dehydrogenase specific activities were the same in these embryos and larvae. The more negatively charged B subunits of LDH predominated during early stages of embryogenesis in lake trout and brook trout with an increase in synthesis of A subunits evident as development progressed. Activation of the paternal A gene in reciprocal hybrids occurred at a relatively late stage with the LDH subunit specific to the retina appearing after hatching. Analysis of brook trout progeny from a cross of parental types with a variant and wild-type B subunit suggested nonrandom LDH tetramer assembly which may be genetically controlled.This study was supported by National Science Foundation Grant GB-7271.  相似文献

We describe the isolation and characterization of 12 tetranucleotide microsatellites for Rio Grande cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii virginalis) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), and subsequently investigate their performance in Colorado River cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii pleuriticus), greenback cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii stomias) and Yellowstone cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarki bouvieri). All 12 loci are polymorphic in all subspecies of O. clarkii examined.  相似文献

Brown trout, Salmo trutta, were allowed to thermoregulate individually in an electronic shuttlebox. Pooled data for 6 fish showed a diel pattern of preferred temperature, with a diurnal minimum of 10.3°C, an early nocturnal maximum of 13.7°C, a less pronounced mid-scotophase minimum of 11.7°C, and a secondary dawn maximum of 12.8°C, in a somewhat crepuscular pattern. Antibacterial proteins are an important part of the innate immune system for all animals. They have been extensively studied in mammals, amphibians and invertebrates, but have received only scant attention in fish. Their expression and processing, however, provide a way of monitoring defence vigour during development or with seasonal changes in physiology. The aim of the present work was to identify and characterise antibacterial proteins in rainbow trout. In vitro analyses of extracts of the peripheral blood leucocytes, head kidney leucocytes and mucus from adult unstimulated (non-immune) fish showed marked antibacterial activity against Gram positive bacteria. Fractionation by ion exchange chromatography and RP-HPLC of head kidney extracts showed the presence of two forms of lysozyme but no constitutively expressed antimicrobial proteins of < 10 kDa. By contrast, chromatographic analyses of mucus revealed at least four antibacterial proteins. Two are conventional lysozymes, a third is an unusual lysozyme-like protein with a low isoelectric point, and the fourth is a highly hydrophobic, cationic peptide of c. 3 kDa.  相似文献

The upstream spawning migrations of brown trout and sea trout were studied using stationary traps placed in Kirk Burn, a tributary of the upper Tweed. The sea trout spawning period extended from early November to the first week of December, while that of brown trout occurred from the middle of October to the third week of December. Sea trout were predominantly maiden spawners of ages 2.1+ and 3.1+ while brown trout were mostly age 2+ and 3+. Male-female sex ratios approximated 1:1.4 in sea trout but 6 : 1 in brown trout. Brown trout males participated in the spawning activities of sea trout. Low water conditions in Kirk Burn hindered the upstream movement of spawning sea trout, while sudden increases in water level appeared to stimulate the upstream migration of both brown trout and sea trout. The suggestion is advanced that the freshwater resident brown trout of the Tweed which migrate upstream into the smaller tributaries to spawn is wholly, or at least partially, the progeny of anadromous parents.  相似文献

Morphological studies on the effect of low pH on egg shells (chorion) of rainbow trout, Oncorhynrhus mykiss Walbaum (formerly Salmo gairdneri ), and brown trout, Salmo trutta f. fario L., showed that the plugs of the outer layer of the chorion, which block the channels of the underlying layer, developed distinctive vacuolization at low pH exposure. This may lead to loss of chorional semi-permeability. Chorions were incompletely degraded at low pH inducing hatching problems. Partially hatched alevins showed only a small local zone of dissolution of the chorion around the head of the embryo preventing the larvae from being freed.  相似文献

Nonnative trout invasions have caused the widespread decline of cutthroat trout populations in western North America. In contrast to other nonnative salmonids, the role of nonnative brown trout in native cutthroat trout decline is poorly understood. Specifically, the level of ecological similarity that occurs between these species and the importance of other trophic mechanisms (e.g., predation) in their interactions are key uncertainties. We evaluated the trophic relationships of brown trout and cutthroat trout in a northern Utah river using a combination of diet and stable isotope analyses. We compared the dietary habits of these two species using multiple and complementary measures. Based on both stomach contents and δ13C signatures, we found that these species consumed a similar and opportunistic diet (i.e., they were nonselective in their foraging patterns). However, at most sizes, brown trout ingested larger prey—including fishes—and occupied a higher relative trophic position (i.e., δ15N) than cutthroat trout. Overall, these results demonstrate a high degree of dietary similarity and therefore strengthen earlier conclusions regarding interspecific competition between these two species. Our study, when considered alongside the work of others, suggests there is potential for predatory interactions between these species (i.e., brown trout preying on small cutthroat trout). We believe that future research on brown trout–cutthroat trout interactions should consider predatory effects in greater detail.

Synopsis The numbers of trout,Salmo trutta, in Granslev », Denmark, were estimated by the removal method on 18 dates from March 1974 to March 1976. Populations density varied from 0.39 to 0.74 trout m–2 in 1974–1975 and from 0.36 to 0.59 m–2 in 1975–1976 and at all times four or five year classes were present. The age structure of the population was unstable and the variable natural survival, immigration into and emigration from the study site could not be separated. An annual growth cycle with the most rapid growth for all year classes taking place from May to early August was found. Statistically significant differences between different years occurred in the growth of the 0,I and II age groups, but no evidence of density-dependent growth was found. The biomass ranged from 35.4 to 9.5 g m–2. The total mean annual biomass was 22.8 and 14.7 g m–2 in the two years and the II group made the greatest contribution, 44 and 48%, respectively. During 1975–1976 the mean annual biomass of each year class only was about two-thirds of that in 1974–1975. Annual production in the two years was 25.7 (range 24.7–28.5) and 12.6 g m–2 (range 11.7–15.0) and the II group accounted for about 46 and 38% of the production. In addition eel,Anguilla anguilla, produced about 0.5 g m–2 yr–2. The unstable age structure of the trout population was compared with trout populations from other streams. The importance of immigration as a recruitment process in middle and lower reaches of streams and of migrations as a mechanism to optimise utilization of the total stream habitat, as well as temperature as a factor controlling the growth rate are discussed.  相似文献

Recombinant metallothionein A (MT-A) from rainbow trout has been successfully produced in milligram quantities in Escherichia coli. cDNA has been subcloned into pGEX-6P.1 vector, in-frame with a sequence encoding an N-terminal glutathione-S-transferase (GST) tail. Purification to electrophoretic homogeneity has been obtained by affinity chromatography using GSH-Sepharose. After enzymatic cleavage of GST tail, the MT-A moiety shows a molecular weight, corresponding to the expected one (6630 Da). The final yield of the entire expression and purification process was about 5 mg of pure metallothionein per liter of bacterial culture. The effects of different reducing and alkylating agents have been evaluated at the level of the formation of higher molecular weight aggregates. To investigate the metal-binding ability of the recombinant MT-A, we carried out a spectrophotometrical titration with cadmium ions. Finally, we checked the metal dissociation by recording the UV absorbance of the protein as a function of the environmental pH.  相似文献

The major histone cluster (hisDNA) was mapped by fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) to mitotic chromosomes of Atlantic salmon, brown trout, and rainbow trout. The data reveal that in the three species hisDNA is tandemly repeated in a single locus. Southern blots of genomic DNA indicate that these clusters are representative of the vast majority of the histone genes in these species. Similar reiteration values were found among the three species. Genetic variability in the hisDNA was found only in brown trout for an EcoRI site.  相似文献
