Attalea colenda is a monoecious palm found in pastures in coastal Ecuador. In dry regions, it is a valuable source of oil in self-sufficiency farming or in combination with cattle in pastures. The palm was studied over a gradient of dry to humid environments during two fruiting seasons. Palm growth, production of leaves, inflorescences, and infructescences, number of fruits per infructescence, and seed weight of five populations were evaluated. The individual of average size is 15 m tall, which corresponds to approximately 30–40 years of age. No difference in fruit production was recorded between wet and dry regions of coastal Ecuador. The average production of one hectare of pasture, with 50 palms, was 0.9 t of oil per year. One population that was part of an agroforestry system produced 50% more fruits than the average of all populations in pasture.  相似文献

For a hectare of oil palm plantation, about 21.63 tonnes of biomass comprising 20.43 % empty fruit bunches, 5.09 % palm kernel shells, 11.65 % oil palm trunks, 50.30 % oil palm fronds and 12.53 % palm pressed fibre is produced per year as wastes which keep raising many environmental concerns as most of them are incinerated and dumped at open sites. Oil palm wastes are found to contain phytochemicals which have anti-cancer, antioxidants and other vital biological activities. About 17–65 kg of carotenoids, 0.1–60 kg phenolic compounds, 0.6–39 kg sterols and 4.0–62 kg tocols could be extracted from these wastes which would not only boost the economy but also help improve human health and promote clean environments. This study assesses the phytochemistry of oil palm wastes and their pharmacological activities beneficial to the nutraceutical industry with the view of utilizing oil palm wastes for sustainable development.  相似文献

Diacylglycerol acyltransferases (DGAT) are involved in the acylation of sn-1,2-diacylglycerol. Palm kernel oil, extracted from Elaeis guineensis (oil palm) seeds, has a high content of medium-chain fatty acids mainly lauric acid (C12:0). A putative E. guineensis diacylglycerol acyltransferase gene (EgDGAT1-1) is expressed at the onset of lauric acid accumulation in the seed endosperm suggesting that it is a determinant of medium-chain triacylglycerol storage. To test this hypothesis, we thoroughly characterized EgDGAT1-1 activity through functional complementation of a Yarrowia lipolytica mutant strain devoid of neutral lipids. EgDGAT1-1 expression is sufficient to restore triacylglycerol accumulation in neosynthesized lipid droplets. A comparative functional study with Arabidopsis thaliana DGAT1 highlighted contrasting substrate specificities when the recombinant yeast was cultured in lauric acid supplemented medium. The EgDGAT1-1 expressing strain preferentially accumulated medium-chain triacylglycerols whereas AtDGAT1 expression induced long-chain triacylglycerol storage in Y. lipolytica. EgDGAT1-1 localized to the endoplasmic reticulum where TAG biosynthesis takes place. Reestablishing neutral lipid accumulation in the Y. lipolytica mutant strain did not induce major reorganization of the yeast microsomal proteome. Overall, our findings demonstrate that EgDGAT1-1 is an endoplasmic reticulum DGAT with preference for medium-chain fatty acid substrates, in line with its physiological role in palm kernel. The characterized EgDGAT1-1 could be used to promote medium-chain triacylglycerol accumulation in microbial-produced oil for industrial chemicals and cosmetics.  相似文献

Palm kernel oil, palm olein, crude palm oil and palm acid oil were used for the synthesis of poly (3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) [P(3HB-co-3HHx)] by a mutant strain of Wautersia eutropha (formerly Ralstonia eutropha) harboring the Aeromonas caviae polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) synthase gene. Palm kernel oil was an excellent carbon source for the production of cell biomass and P(3HB-co-3HHx). About 87% (w/w) of the cell dry weight as P(3HB-co-3HHx) was obtained using 5 g palm kernel oil/l. Gravimetric and microscopic analyses further confirmed the high PHA content in the recombinant cells. The molar fraction of 3HHx remained constant at 5 mol % regardless of the type and concentration of palm oil products used. The small amount of 3HHx units was confirmed by 13C NMR analysis. The number average molecular weight (Mn) of the PHA copolymer produced from the various palm oil products ranged from 27 0000 to 46 0000 Da. The polydispersity was in the range of 2.6–3.9.  相似文献

Glycerolysis of palm and palm kernel oils were conducted using a commercial 1,3-specific lipase from Humicola lanuginosa (trade name: SP 398) as catalyst (500 units lipase g–1 oil) at 40°C and oil:glycerol (1:2 mol mol–1) in a solvent-free system. After 24 h, the glycerolysis products of palm and palm kernel oils consisted of 23% triacylglycerols, 18% monoacylglycerols, 38% diacylglycerols and 18% triacylglycerols, 31% monoacylglycerols, 42% diacylglycerols, respectively. The monoacylglycerol fraction of the glycerolysis product of palm oil was enriched in oleic acid. Palmitic acid content of the monoacylglycerol fraction of the same product was less than that of the original oil. Under the same conditions, monacylglycerol fraction of the palm kernel oil glycerolysis product was enriched in palmitic, stearic and oleic acids.  相似文献

Current agricultural realities dictate that crops be developed which can be grown with fewer petroleum inputs and on marginal croplands. A palm tree native to the Amazon Valley,Jessenia bataua, found in both swamplands and upland forests has been studied. The fruits of this tree have long been exploited by indigenous peoples as a source of oil and a milk-like drink. Chemical analyses of the oil show it to be similar to olive oil. Chemical and biological assays of the mesocarp pulp protein reveal its quality to be comparable to that of good animal protein and considerably better than most grain and legume proteins. Rats fed diets containingJessenia bataua mesocarp oil and pulp showed normal weight gains when compared to those fed diets with similar quanities of corn oil and casein.Jessenia bataua is an example of a little-known wild plant that could provide a new source of food protein and oil for combating world hunger.  相似文献

The aim of the present work was to examine how different fats commonly used in the feed industry affect broiler performance, nutrient digestibility and microbial fermentation in the gastrointestinal tract of broiler chickens challenged with virulent Clostridium perfringens strains. Two experiments were carried out, each including 480-day-old male broilers (Ross 308), which were randomly distributed to eight experimental groups using six replicate pens per treatment and 10 birds per pen. In Experiment 1, birds were fed diets containing soybean oil, palm kernel fatty acid distillers, rendered pork fat and lard. In Experiment 2, birds were fed diets containing rapeseed oil, coconut oil, beef tallow and palm oil. In both experiments, the birds were either not challenged or challenged with a mixture of three C. perfringens type A strains. Irrespective of the fat type present in the diet, C. perfringens did not affect broiler chicken body weight gain (BWG) and mortality in either of the two experiments. The BWG was affected by dietary fat type in both experiments, indicating that the fatty acid composition of the fat source affects broiler growth performance. In particular, the inclusion of animal fats tended to improve final BW to a greater extent compared with the inclusion of unsaturated vegetable oils. In Experiment 2, irrespective of the dietary fat type present in the diet, C. perfringens challenge significantly impaired feed conversion ratio in the period from 14 to 28 days (1.63 v. 1.69) and at 42 days (1.65 v. 1.68). In both experiments apparent metabolizable energy values were affected by dietary fat type. Irrespective of the fat type present in the diet, C. perfringens challenge decreased the digesta pH in the crop and ileum, but had no effect in cecal contents. Moreover, in Experiment 1, total organic acid concentration in the ileum was two to three times lower on soybean oil diets as compared with other treatments, indicating that C. perfringens as well as dietary fat type significantly affects microbiota activity in the broiler chicken gastrointestinal tract.  相似文献

The present study aims to evaluate the effects of feeding palm oil by-products based diets on different muscle fatty acid profiles in goats. Thirty-two Cacang × Boer goats were randomly assigned to four dietary treatments: (1) control diet (CD), (2) 80% decanter cake diet (DCD), (3) 80% palm kernel cake diet (PKCD) and (4) CD plus 5% palm oil (PO) supplemented diet (CPOD). After 100 days of feeding, four goats from each group were slaughtered and longissimus dorsi (LD), infraspinatus (IS) and biceps femoris (BF) were sampled for analysis of fatty acids. Goats fed the PKCD had higher (P<0.05) concentration of lauric acid (C12:0) than those fed the other diets in all the muscles tested. Compared to the other diets, the concentrations of palmitic acid (C16:0) and stearic acid (C18:0) were lower (P<0.05) and that of linoleic acid (C18:2 n-6) was higher (P<0.05) in the muscles from goats fed the CD. It was concluded that palm kernel cake and decanter cake can be included in the diet of goats up to 80% with more beneficial than detrimental effects on the fatty acid profile of their meat.  相似文献

The lipid and fatty acid composition of the haustorium of thedeveloping seedling of the West African oil palm, Elaeis guineensisJacq. has been studied using the combined techniques of thin-layerand gas-liquid chromatography. In addition to triglycerides, which represented over 75 per cent of the total lipids, therewere present small quantities of free fatty acids, diglyceridesand polar lipids. The two glycolipids, monogalactosyl and digalactosyldiglycerides, formed the bulk of the polar lipids with smallamounts of phosphatidyl choline and phosphatidyl inositol. In general, the fatty acid pattern of the haustorium was intermediatebetween that of the palm kernel oil and the palm fruit mesocarp, and resembled to a great extent the fatty acids of the kerneltesta. It is suggested, from the presence of the biological membranelipids and lipolytic enzymes, that the main function of thehaustorium is that of food mobilization and transport for theyoung plant.  相似文献

The fossil plants from the Malha Crater, previously referred to as Cyperus papyrus L. have been re-identified as Phragmites sp.; since determination to species is not possible, this record can have no phytogeographical or palaeoclimatic significance.Olea sp., probably O. laperrinei Batt. et Trab. from Jebel Marra, dated 3 500 B.P. raises interesting but so far speculative considerations regarding the inter-relationship of Mediterranean and tropical African species in the southern Sahara during the last pluvial period.Leaf impressions of the oil palm, Elaeis guineensis Jacq. from Jebel Marra, where it is no longer to be found, plus considerations regarding other surviving forest species in the gallery forests, suggest a minimum northwards climatic shift during the last pluvial in the order of 400 km.This fossil record is regarded as suggesting that the source of the oil palm kernel discovered at the Neolithic site of Esh Shaheinab, near Khartoum, is probably Jebel Marra.  相似文献

Purpose

The aim of this paper is to evaluate assumptions and data used in calculations  related to palm oil produced for biodiesel production relative to the European Renewable Energy Directive (EU-RED). The intent of this paper is not to review all assumptions and data, but rather to evaluate whether the methodology is applied in a consistent way and whether current default values address relevant management practices of palm oil production systems.

Methods

The GHG calculation method provided in Annex V of the EU-RED was used to calculate the GHG-emissions from palm oil production systems. Moreover, the internal nitrogen recycling on the plantation was calculated based on monitoring data in North Sumatra.

Results and discussion

A calculation methodology is detailed in Annex V of the EU-RED. Some important aspects necessary to calculate the GHG emission savings correctly are insufficiently considered, e.g.: ? “Nitrogen recycling” within the plantation due to fronds remaining on the plantation is ignored. The associated organic N-input to the plantation and the resulting nitrous oxide emissions is not considered within the calculations, despite crop residues being taken into account for annual crops in the BIOGRACE tool. ? The calculation of GHG-emissions from residue and waste water treatment is inappropriately implemented despite being a hot-spot for GHG emissions within the life cycle of palm oil and palm oil biodiesel. Additionally, no distinction is made between palm oil and palm kernel oil even though palm kernel oil is rarely used for biodiesel production. ? The allocation procedure does not address the most relevant oil mill management practices. Palm oil mills produce crude palm oil (CPO) in addition either nuts or palm kernels and nut shells. In the first case, the nuts would be treated as co-products and upstream emissions would be allocated based on the energy content; in the second case the kernels would be treated as co-products while the shelöls are considered as waste without upstream emissions. This has a significant impact on the resulst or GHG savings, respectively. ? It is not specified whether indirect GHG emissions from nitrogen oxide emission from the heat and power unit of palm oil mills should be taken into account.

Conclusions and recommendations

In conclusion, the existing calculation methodology described in Annex V of the EU-RED and default values are insufficient for calculating the real GHG emission savings from palm oil and palm oil biodiesel. The current default values do not reflect relevant management practices. Additionally, they protect poor management practices, such as the disposal of empty fruit bunches (EFB), and lead to an overestimation of GHG savings from palm oil biodiesel. A default value for EFB disposal must be introduced because resulting GHG emissions are substantial. Organic nitrogen from fronds must be taken into account when calculating real GHG savings from palm oil biodiesel. Further, more conservative data for FFB yield and fugitive emissions from wastewater treatment should be introduced in order to foster environmental friendly management options. Moreover, credits for bioenergy production from crop residues should be allowed in order to foster the mobilization of currently unused biomass.  相似文献

A metabolism experiment was conducted with 13 gilts over four periods to investigate the effects of age or weight of pigs, level of inclusion and methods of estimation of apparent digestible (DE) and metabolizable (ME) energy and nutrient digestibility of full-fat palm kernels (FFPK), recombined palm kernel oil and meal (OPKM) and palm kernel oil (PKO). Each palm kernel product was evaluated at levels equivalent to added oil of 40, 80 and 120 g kg−1 in a basal diet. Extracted palm kernel meal (PKM) was also evaluated in the basal diet at the same level as in OPKM. Thus, 13 treatments arranged in four blocks (time periods) constituted the experimental data analysed using a randomised complete block design. Digestible energy and ME contents and apparent digestibility of nitrogen (ADN), dry matter (ADD) and oil (AOD - employing two oil analytical methods) of palm kernel products were estimated by single level assay and by regression with the latter yielding DE values of 40.2, 19.5, 22.1 and 13.1 MJ/kg DM for PKO, FFPK, OPKM and PKM, respectively. The corresponding values for AOD were 1.08, 0.93, 1.03 and 0.88. While the level of inclusion and pig weight (over the range 40–76 kg) did not significantly affect dietary energy and nutrient digestibility of palm kernel products, the form of oil inclusion had considerable effect with OPKM being better utilized than FFPK. Digestibility of oil in the palm kernel products measured by the ether extract (EE) method was, in general, significantly higher than that estimated by the acid ether extract (AEE) procedure. The results suggest the necessity for digestibility coefficients of oils and fats in oil bearing ingredients to be re-evaluated in the light of the currently applied analytical method as figures obtained using the traditional ether extract method may not be applicable to the true nutritional value of feed ingredients and consequently may lead to imprecise diet formulation.  相似文献

Medium chain glycerides (MCGs) containing C8:0 and C10:0 fatty acids is very much important for medicinal and nutritional applications. Coconut and palm kernel fatty acid distillates (FADs) can be utilized to produce MCGs by a combination of lipase-catalyzed hydrolysis and esterification reactions. The neutral glycerides present in coconut and palm kernel FADs are hydrolyzed by Candida rugosa lipase. The hydrolysates were then subjected to steam distillation under vacuum (at 120–140 °C) to get fractions rich in medium chain fatty acids (MCFAs). The fractions, from coconut and palm kernel FADs (75.2 and 76.2% MCFAs, respectively), were esterified with Rhizomucor miehei (Lipozyme RM IM) lipase to produce MCGs. Products from coconut FAD contained 64.7–67.5% diacylglycerol (DG), followed by 18.8–22.9% monoacylglycerol (MG) and 9.8–9.3% triacylglycerol (TG). Similarly, products from palm kernel FAD contained 63.5–66.7% DG, 19.1–23.6% MG and 9.5–10.1% TG.  相似文献

Trichilia emetica Vahl andT. dregeana Sonder are trees indigenous to Zimbabwe and are widely planted for shade in urban areas. The seed ofTrichilia contains oil concentrations as high as most oil-rich dicotyledonous seeds and is a potential source of income for rural people. The seed production of mature trees varies greatly from one year to the next, averaging 64.7 kg of fresh seed per tree annually in Harare. Fresh seed yields approximately 308 ml oil kg1 (approximately 30%), using a simple ram press. Trichilia oil produces a good finish on wooden surfaces and would compete successfully with other commercial wood oils. No storage problems are envisaged for either seed or oil.  相似文献

Black-shouldered Kite (Elanus caeruleus) is a well-known raptor that inhabits open areas such as oil palm plantation or paddy field. To determine preferable habitat and nesting site of Black-shouldered Kite in oil palm landscape, we conducted a study on Black-shouldered Kite’s nesting biology in Carey Island, Selangor, Malaysia. We divided the island into six types of habitat and conducted road-side count of Black-shouldered Kite from April 2009 to February 2011. Whenever the Black-shouldered Kite was detected, we thoroughly searched the surrounding area for their nest. In total, we have recorded forty nests. The nests were built on 15 species of trees but most of the trees shared common physical characteristics. Some novice breeders also used oil palm tree as their nesting site. Structure and building materials of nests constructed on oil palm trees were different from nests built on other trees. Of all breeding attempts, only four nests which were located in residential area adjacent to young oil palm habitat were successful. Among important characteristics of successful nesting site include taller trees with strong branches and good leaf coverage. These trees not only protect nests from predator detection (except from other predatory birds) and physical environment but also facilitate Black-shouldered Kite’s foraging activities by providing good vantage point.  相似文献

Background, Aims and Scope

The consequential approach to system delimitation in LCA requires that consideration of the technologies and suppliers included are ‘marginal’, i.e. that they are actually affected by a change in demand. Furthermore, coproduct allocation must be avoided by system expansion. Vegetable oils constitute a significant product group included in many LCAs that are intended for use in decision support. This article argues that the vegetable oil market has faced major changes around the turn of the century. The aim of this study is to study the marginal supply of vegetable oil as it has shifted to palm oil and describe the product system of the new supply.

Methods

The methods for identification of marginal technologies and suppliers and for avoiding co-product allocation are based on the work of Weidema (2003). The marginal vegetable oil is identified on the basis of agricultural statistics on production volumes and prices. A co-product from palm oil production is palm kernel meal, which is used for fodder purposes where it has two main properties: protein and energy. When carrying out system expansion, these properties are taken into account.

Results

The major vegetable oils are soy oil, palm oil, rapeseed oil and sun oil. These oils are substitutable within the most common applications. Based on market trends, a shift from rapeseed oil to palm oil as the marginal vegetable oil is identified around the year 2000, when palm oil turns out to be the most competitive oil. It is recommended to regard palm oil and its dependent co-product palm kernel oil as the marginal vegetable oil. The analysis of the product system shows that the demand for 1 kg palm oil requires 4.49 kg FFB (oil palm fruit) and the displacement of 0.035 kg soybeans (marginal source of fodder protein) and 0.066 kg barley (marginal source of fodder energy).

Discussion

The identification of the marginal vegetable oil and the avoidance of co-product allocation by system expansion showed that several commodities may be affected when using the consequential approach. Hence, the product system for vegetable oils is relatively complex compared to traditional LCAs in which average technologies and suppliers are applied and in which co-product allocation is carried out by applying an allocation factor.

Conclusions

This article presents how the marginal vegetable oil can be identified and that co-product allocation between oils and meal can be avoided by system expansion, by considering the energy and protein content in the meal, which displaces a mix of the marginal sources of energy and protein for animal fodder (barley and soy meal, respectively).

Recommendations and Perspectives

The implication of a shift in the marginal vegetable oil is significant. Many LCAs on rapeseed oil have been conducted and are being used as decision support in the bio energy field. Thus, based on consequential LCA methodology, it is argued that these LCAs need to be revised, since they no longer focus on the oil actually affected.

Re-esterified oils are new fat sources obtained from chemical esterification of acid oils with glycerol (both economically interesting by-products from oil refining and biodiesel industries, respectively). The different fatty acid (FA) positional distribution and acylglycerol composition of re-esterified oils may enhance the apparent absorption of saturated fatty acids (SFA) and, thus, their overall nutritive value. The aim of the present study was to investigate the potential use of re-esterified palm oils, in comparison with their corresponding acid and native oils, and also with an unsaturated fat source in weaning-piglet diets. The parameters assessed were: FA apparent absorption, acylglycerol and free fatty acid (FFA) composition of feces, and growth performance. One-hundred and twenty weaning piglets (average weight of 8.50±1.778 kg) were blocked by initial BW (six blocks) and randomly assigned to five dietary treatments, resulting in four piglets per pen and six replicates per treatment. Dietary treatments were a basal diet supplemented with 10% (as-fed basis) of native soybean oil (SN), native palm oil (PN), acid palm oil (PA), re-esterified palm oil low in mono- (MAG) and diacylglycerols (DAG) (PEL), or re-esterified palm oil high in MAG and DAG (PEH). Results from the digestibility balance showed that SN reached the greatest total FA apparent absorption, and statistically different from PN, PA and PEL (P<0.05). There were no statistical differences among palm-oil sources (P>0.05), but PEH achieved the greatest total FA apparent absorption. Animals fed PEL, despite the fact that PEL oil contained more sn-2 SFA, did not show an improved absorption of SFA (P>0.05). Animals fed PA and PN showed similar apparent absorption coefficients (P>0.05), despite the high FFA content of PA oil. The acylglycerol and FFA composition of feces was mainly composed of FFA. There were no significant differences in growth performance (P>0.05). Results of the present study suggest that, despite the different acylglycerol structure of re-esterified oils, there were no significant differences in digestibility or performance with respect to their corresponding PN and PA oils in weaning-piglet diets.  相似文献

A total of 113 Jatropha curcas clonal accessions collected from different regions of India were studied to quantify the magnitude of genetic variability present in the test population and to identify important yield-attributing characters useful for developing high-yielding Jatropha cultivars. High heritability was observed for fruits per plant, seeds per plant, 100-seed weight, seed/kernel (S/K) ratio and kernel oil percentage coupled with high genetic advance suggesting that the accessions can be considered improvement. The significant positive association of seed oil content (%) with 100-seed weight suggested the effectiveness of indirect selection for seed oil content through 100-seed weight. Accessions 76, 120, 29, 86 and 84 showed above average higher values for all yield attributes (viz. fruit and seed yield, 100-seed weight, S/K ratio and oil content) suggesting these as best out of the test accessions. Accessions showing higher values for one or the other yield attributes could be selected as parents for further improvement.  相似文献
