Cereal crop plants at Asikli Höyük included einkorn wheat (Triticum monococcum), emmer wheat (T. dicoccum), free-threshing wheat (T. cf. durum), hulled two-rowed barley (Hordeum distichum) and naked barley (H. vulgare var. nudum). As for pulses, bitter vetch (Vicia ervilia), lentil (Lens culinaris) and probably pea (Pisum sativum) were grown. Hackberry (Celtis tournefortii) fruits were gathered intensively. In addition, fruits of pistachio (Pistacia cf. atlantica) and almond (Amygdalus spec.) were collected from the wild.  相似文献

Until now, very little was known about the agriculture of the Late Iron Age in Hungary. This paper describes the first results of an archaeobotanical examination of a late Iron Age, Celtic settlement in Budapest. It is the first systematically sampled and representatively investigated site of this time period in Hungary. Most of the samples come from different types of pits, which were subjectively sampled. The macrofossils were carbonised and, apart from many seeds and fruit stones, consisted mostly of charcoal. Among the seed remains both cultivated and wild species were present. The spectrum of cultivated plants was marked by a large number of cereals. The dominant cereals were Triticum spelta L. (spelt wheat) and Panicum millaceum L. (broomcorn millet), but also common were Avena sativa L., Avena sp. (oats), Triticum monococcum L. (einkorn), Hordeum vulgare L. (barley); Triticum aestivum/durum/turgidum L./Desf./L., incl. T. compactum Host. (bread wheat, including club wheat). Secale cereale L. (rye) and Triticum dicoccum (Schrank) Schübl. (emmer) were rare and seemed to be less important. The weeds and synanthropic vegetation, including ruderals, were represented by many taxa, and some of them also occurred in large amounts. The main cereals were sown as winter crops, judging from the rarely occurring of plants accompanying the cereals. Wild fruits contributed to the daily diet, too – as seen from the stones of Cornus mas (cornelian cherry), Crataegus sp. (hawthorn) and Prunus spinos (sloe, blackthorn). The early Neolithic sites of La Lámpara and La Revilla del Campo in the Meseta Norte (Northern Meseta) plateau in central Spain produced evidence for early agriculture from the last third of the 6th millennium B.C. The hulled wheats Triticum monococcum (einkorn) and T. dicoccum (emmer) were identified from carbonised plant remains as well as from imprints in pottery and daub. Single finds of charred remains of Hordeum vulgare (barley), Papaver somniferum/setigerum (poppy) and Linum usitatissimum (linseed) indicated other cultivated crops. The wild plants mainly indicated arable weeds, partly from less fertile soils, and garrigue vegetation from poor pastures. The spectrum of crops from the Ambrona sites was compared to other inner Iberian sites as well as to Mediterranean sites. Sediment samples as well as mineral crusts from graves were analysed from the Neolithic tumulus of La Peña de la Abuela. Its diachronic collective burials had originated from a period of time during the first third of the 4th millennium B.C. Probably no crops, but many green vegetative parts of pine, oak, and juniper had been used as funeral gifts. Oak cupula development indicated early summer activities in the grave-mound. Wickerwork made of willow was used for embedding the dead bodies.  相似文献

Charred plant remains from the sites of Tell Qaramel, Jerf el Ahmar, Dja’de and Tell ‘Abr situated in northern Syria and dated to the tenth and ninth millennia cal b.c. demonstrate that a wide variety of wild pulses, cereals, fruits and nuts was exploited. Five lines of evidence suggest that cultivation was practised at three of the sites. (1) Wild einkorn, wild rye and lentils occur outside their natural habitats. (2) The founder crops barley, emmer and single-grained einkorn appear at different times. (3) An assemblage of weeds of cultivation was identified. (4) There is a gradual decrease in gathered plants such as small seeded grasses and Polygonum/Rumex. (5) Barley grains increase in breadth and thickness. Morphological domestication did not become established, perhaps because seed stock was regularly collected from wild stands. Charred rodent droppings indicate large-scale grain storage.  相似文献

In this article we examine the natural habitats and distribution of the six wild cereals: Triticum urartu (wild urartu wheat), T. boeoticum aegilopoides (single-grained wild einkorn), T. boeoticum thaoudar (two-grained wild einkorn), T. dicoccoides (wild emmer wheat), Secale spp. (wild ryes) and Hordeum spontaneum (wild barley). A comparison of late Pleistocene/early Holocene archaeobotanical assemblages in the Near East with present-day distributions of wild cereals shows a good correlation. The regional variation in the archaeobotanical cereal assemblages and the ensuing domestication provide evidence that different cereal species were domesticated independently in different areas. Some sites were not situated near wild cereal habitats and a few were located outside the limits of distribution, even accounting for moister climatic conditions. I argue here that current models which try to explain the shift to farming have tended to over-emphasize the effect of the Younger Dryas climatic change. First, it would have had only a minor effect on cereal availability. Secondly, agriculture appears to have been established after the Younger Dryas. Thirdly, there is no evidence for a single centre of origin; agriculture arose in widely separated geographic and climatic regions. And fourthly, agriculture depends on stable climatic conditions which were not established until after the Younger Dryas.  相似文献

The archaeobotanical investigations in the Neolithic pile settlement of Hornstaad Hörnle I A, Lake Constance, Germany (3919–3905 cal B.C.) has answered many questions concerning agricultural activities and land use in Neolithic times. Very large carbonized stores of unthreshed cereals there showed that every household had 210–280 kg of naked wheat, einkorn, barley and emmer. As most of the wild plant remains in the cereal stores were from annual field weeds it is concluded that the arable land was cultivated continuously, probably for the whole duration of the settlement's occupation. No hints of short or long period fallows were found. Intensive soil treatment such as hoeing and digging is indicated by the rarity of perennial weeds. Because of the high quality of the cultivated soils, manuring was not necessary. The cereals were harvested high on the culm, and the harvest was first stored unthreshed, probably to dry it completely. Every house (family) had its own cereal stores with various cereals. Naked wheat and probably naked barley were threshed outside the settlement, while dehusking of einkorn and probably of emmer took place inside the village. Evidence of cereal cleaning, winnowing, sieving and sorting by hand were found. More than 700 carbonized remains of food products showed that porridge made from ground and shredded wheat was one of the main foods in the settlement.  相似文献

At the end of the 6th millennium B. C. Triticum monococcum (einkorn) and Triticum dicoccum (emmer) were the main cereals of the early Neolithic Bandkeramik culture in central Europe. New archaeobotanical investigations at relevant Bandkeramik sites reveal the regular occurrence of morphologically two-grained einkorn. Some preliminary thoughts on the state of research and the possible origin of two-grained einkorn forms are presented here. Bread cereals Wheat and spelt are primarily used as bread cereals together with rye. To increase the worldwide wheat production and achieve cultivation goals faster, the very large bread wheat genome is currently analyzed intensively. Wheat is hexaploid and contains three genomes side by side which do not hybridize. The progenitors of einkorn (diploid) and emmer (tetraploid) have been the ancestors of today's wheat and spelt. Spelt is less demanding than wheat but requires an extra stage of husk removal before milling. In Germany, spelt is nowadays a modern bread cereal again. As it has a higher ratio of essential amino acids, the protein part of rye is more valuable for nutrition than that of wheat. Climatic conditions as well as poorer soils in Northern Germany are more suitable for rye than for wheat. Therefore rye has been a typical German bread cereal since medieval times.  相似文献

This paper lays out archaeobotanical evidence of cereals and fruits from 5th–2nd millennium B.C. sites in Turkmenistan (Anau, Gonur) and Uzbekistan (Djarkutan). Our current research program (1989-present) focuses on systematic recovery of botanical remains in their stratigraphic context. The cereals from these sites includeHordeum vulgare L. ssp.vulgare (6-row barley) andTrilicum aestivum L. s.l. (bread wheat). The presence of plump grains of 6-row barley and bread wheat may indicate that small-scale irrigation was practised at Anau as early as the Chalcolithic period. The possibility is also raised that these plump-grained types may have come from the east rather than through northern Iran. Fruit pit remains ofVilis vinifera L. (grape) andPislacia (pistachio) make their first significant appearance in Bronze Age deposits.  相似文献

A cDNA sequence (Hbc8-2) isolated from pistils of the self-incompatible species Hordeum bulbosum was analysed for expression pattern and genetic map location. Hbc8-2 was expressed just prior to anthesis in mature pistils, and expression was maintained at a high level throughout anthesis. The same expression pattern was found in self-incompatible rye ( Secale cereale), but no expression was detected in the self-compatible cereals wheat ( Triticum aestivum) or barley ( Hordeum vulgare) at comparable stages of development. However, three wheat expressed sequence tags from a pre-anthesis library had high homology to Hbc8-2. Southern blot analyses using Hbc8-2 as a probe detected hybridising bands in the genomes of various Gramineae species including rye, barley, bread wheat, wild wheat relatives ( Aegilops tauschii and Ae. speltoides), oats ( Avena fatua and A. strigosa), rice ( Oryza sativa) and maize ( Zea mays). This suggests that Hbc8-2-like sequences are present in many species but that high levels of expression may be associated with self-incompatibility. Hbc8-2 was mapped on the long arms of chromosome 2H(b) of H. bulbosum, 2R of rye, and 2B and 2D of wheat and was assigned to chromosome 2H of barley using wheat/barley addition lines. On a H. bulbosum genetic map, Xhbc8-2 was located between Xbcd266 and Xpsr87, while in rye and wheat it was located in a 13.2-cM interval between Xpsr331 and Xpsr932, consistent with previous comparative mapping studies of these species. Mapping in rye suggested that Hbc8-2 is probably proximal to the Z self-incompatibility locus which was previously shown to be tightly linked to Xbcd266.  相似文献

Haynaldia villosa is a wild grass of the tribe Triticeae, other members of which include the cultivated cereals barley, rye, and wheat. We have made an electrophoretic and chemical characterization of the major seed storage proteins (prolamins) of H. villosa and determined the chromosomal locations of the structural genes for some components using the available wheat/H. villosa chromosome addition lines. As in wheat, barley, and rye, groups of high molecular weight (polymeric), sulfur-poor (monomeric), and sulfur-rich (monomeric -type and polymeric) prolamins can be recognized. Most of the components are encoded by genes on chromosome 1 Ha, which is homologous with the chromosomes controlling many of the prolamins in wheat and rye and all of those in barley. In addition, H. villosa also contains -type sulfur-rich prolamins, previously detected only in wheat and its close relatives. These may be encoded by genes on chromosome 6Ha, which is homologous with the group 6 chromosomes that control the -type gliadins of wheat. Despite the proposed close relationship between Haynaldia and ryes, no evidence was found for the presence of proteins closely related to the M r 75,000 -secalins which are characteristic of wild and cultivated species of Secale.  相似文献

Newly germinated seedlings of susceptible cultivars of oats, wheat, barley and rye were inoculated with second-stage juveniles of Heterodera avenae in pots of sand. Subsequent examination showed oat root tips to be more commonly invaded, and by a greater range of nematode numbers than the other cereals. A comparison of oats and barley showed that lower nematode numbers in barley were not due to a higher emigration from barley; invasion, establishment and emigration by nematodes all being greater in oats. Second-stage juveniles were more likely to migrate prior to establishment in barley than in oats.  相似文献

Summary In comparative tests in a glasshouse, the cortex of oat and rye roots senesced more slowly than the cortex of wheat and barley roots. Of the cereals tested, wheat showed the most rapid rate of root cortical senescence, and the rate was unaffected by inoculation of leaves withErysiphe graminis. Whole-plant winter cereals could be of great interest if used as silages for ruminant feeding as opposed to summer crops in that they would spare water resources or valorize low-input management. This study aimed to compare the feeding value of rye, barley, wheat (two genotypes) and triticale (six genotypes). The cereals were sown in October and harvested as silage in June. Forages were offered to Texel castrated sheep in order to evaluate the organic matter digestibility (OMd). The OMd of the wheat cultivars was higher (61.6%, P<0.05) than those of barley (57.2%) and rye (54.7%) but no different from that of triticale (60.6%). Within the triticale genotypes, OMd ranged from 54.7 to 62.3%. The presence of rough barbs should explain the relatively low intake of the cereals with the exception of wheat. Winter cereals provide good-quality forage for feeding ruminants. Wheat has a higher nutritional value than barley and rye and a wide variability for digestibility seems to exist within the triticale cultivars. Such variability in a species known for its ability to be cropped under limiting conditions should be explored in much greater depth as it could result in providing farmers with genotypes of good quality with an acceptable yield at a lower cost.  相似文献

Fusarium avenaceum isolates from wheat, rye, barley, triticale, corn and potato formed substance with yellow fluorescence with properties similar to citrinin. Pathogenicity of 17 isolates tested against cereals seedlings was weaker than F. culmorum isolates; one isolate only was strong, two medium and the remaining 82 % were very weak or non pathogenic.  相似文献

The molecular weights ofwaxy proteins, by SDS-PAGE, and the N-terminal amino acid sequences of mature protein and of V8 protease-induced fragments were determined in diploid cereals. The homology of the primary structure was relatively high among cereals examined here, and there appeared to be a common sequence, V-F-V-G-A-E-M-A, in the vicinity of the N terminus. Based on the amino acid sequences, these cereals could be divided into two groups, including corn and rice in one and diploid wheat, fourAegilops species, rye, and barley in the other. In diploid wheat andAegilops species there were substitutions of amino acids in the primary structure. Variations of this sort suggest that the primary structure ofwaxy proteins would provide clues to the phylogenetic relations in the wheat group.  相似文献

Summary We compared and contrasted calorimetrically heat production in seedlings incubated at 5°C and 24°C using genotypes from cold and warm Israeli populations of the wild progenitors of barley (Hordeum spontaneum) and wheat (Triticum dicoccoides). The wild barley sample comprised 14 accessions, 7 from cold localities and 7 from warm localities. The wild emmer wheat sample consisted of 12 accessions, 6 from a cold locality, and 6 from a warm locality. Our results indicated that (1) heat production was significantly higher in the two wild cereals at 5 °C than at 24 °C; (2) interspecifically, wild barley generates significantly more heat than wild wheat at both 5 °C and 24 °C; (3) intraspecifically, wild barley from warm environments generates significantly more heat than wild barley from cold ones, at 24 °C. We hypothesize that both the inter- and intraspecific differences in heat production evolved adaptively by natural selection in accordance with the niche-width genetic variation hypothesis. These differences presumably enhance biochemical processes, hence growth, thereby leading to the shorter annual cycle of barley compared to that of wheat, and may explain the wider range of the wild and cultivated gene pools of barley, as compared with those of wheat. We propose that a shortening of the growth period through utilizing heat production gene(s) is feasible by classical methods of breeding and/or modern biotechnology.  相似文献

Carboxypeptidase activity (hydrolysis of N-carbobenzoxy-l-phenylalanyl-l-alanine) is high in a number of temperate zone cereals, originating in Asia Minor (wheat, barley, oats, wild oats, rye, triticale) compared to other cereals originating in central America or Asia (maize, sorghum, rice). However, endopeptidase activity (hydrolysis of azocasein or hemoglobin) is relatively much higher in the latter group. Comparison of trichloroacetic acid (TCA)-soluble products derived from the hydrolysis of hemoglobin showed that carboxyterminal amino acids (histidine, arginine, and tyrosine), are released when extracts from wheat and barley endosperms are used. With extracts from corn endosperms, much more TCA-soluble ultraviolet- absorbing material is released, but very little is released as free amino acids within the first 2 hours and the expected C-terminal amino acids of hemoglobin are not detected in significant amounts. These results suggest that the method of hydrolysis of the storage proteins may be significantly different in these two classes of cereals.  相似文献

Silicon deposits in the epicarp hairs of the caryopses of mature,field-grown specimens of Hordeum sativum, Avena sativa, Secalecereale and Triticum aestivum were investigated using electron-probemicroanalysis. In all four cereals, silicon was most concentratedat the extreme tips of the hairs. In barley, it was the onlyelement detected; in the other three cereals potassium and calciumwere located below the tip. In wheat, chlorine was also detected. The hair bases of the different cereals displayed variationin the elements detected. Silicon and polassium were presentin all four and calcium present in all except rye. The hairbases of wheat also contained chlorine; phosphorus and zincwere located in barley. The latter alone showed variation ofelements between hair bases. Scanning electron microscopy revealed heavy striations of thehair tips of barley and oats. In rye and wheat, the tips weresmooth but there were slight surface markings below the tip. The results are discussed in relation to the possible functionsand significance of the epicarp hairs and their silicification. Fusarium crookwellense /B.N. and T./ isolated from affected cereals in Poland formed zearalenone on wheat grain up to 602 mg/kg. Tested isolates have been found strong to severe pathogens of wheat, rye, triticale and barley seedlings and corn ears with pathogenicity similar to that ofF. culmorum andF. graminearum.  相似文献
