The study of heleoplankton samples collected in an experimental ricefield in the province of Reggio Emilia (Northern Italy) evidenced a successional pattern of cladoceran species, characterized by the dominance of Moinidae in the early phase the rice cultivation (from May to July). In particular a species new for Italy,Monia weismanni Ishikawa, 1896, typical of Far East ricefields, was found; it was probably introduced into Italy with seeds and constitutes a stable element of the heleoplankton biocoenosis. The population co-occurs withMoina brachiata, Moina affinis, andMoina micrura in the ricefield. In this short noteM. weismanni is described, pointing out the morphological differences with other populations of the same species and with similar species; furthermore, life cycles in Moinidae are analysed in comparison with those of the other dominant cladocerans.  相似文献

Laboratory observations on the egg production, development and growth in the Cladoceran Moina micrura show that this species has a life span of 13 days during which it produces 6M 8 eggs. Two preadult and eleven adult instars were recorded at a temperature range of 28°–30°C. The rate of egg production calculated on a cumulative basis was found to be lower (a = 1.0368) than that of other tropical species. The embryonic stages in Moina micrura closely resembled other cladoceran species, although with a short development period of 24 h. The total life span, growth rate and the total number of eggs produced in Moina micrura have been compared with those of allied tropical, temperate and arctic daphnids. The significance of this relationship to secondary productivity in tropical ecosystems has been discussed.  相似文献

Moina micrura Kurz, 1874 (Crustacea: Anomopoda), commonly regarded as a cosmopolitan cladoceran species, can be found almost all over the world except for arctic and cold-temperate regions. M. micrura has been recorded from virtually all types of limnetic habitats, including temperate permanent ponds, lakes, ephemeral desert pools, and tropical brackish fishponds. Its high morphological and ecological variability has so far been considered a result of intraspecific diversity. We tested the hypothesis that genetically isolated groups exist within M. micrura with crossing experiment and DNA sequence analysis. We compared two clones originating from populations from Central Europe (area of the type locality) and Australia. As there was extremely low production of hybrid eggs, the results of the crossing experiment strongly suggest the existence of reproductive isolation. The sequence divergence of mitochondrial gene for 12S rRNA (7.9%) was comparable to intraspecific differences within Daphnia pulex group. The sequence divergence of the clones of Moina macrocopa from Europe and Central Africa was much lower (1.4%). Our results suggest that at least two sibling species exist within M. micrura complex, which is in agreement with other data questioning the cosmopolitanism of various cladoceran species.  相似文献

Temporal changes in the population densities of four dominant Cladocera (Moina micrura, Diaphanosoma excisum, Alona guttata and Macrothrix spinosa) were studied in untreated and pesticide treated rice plots over a growing season. M. micrura was the first dominant species to occur in all the plots which were initially devoid of vegetation except for the newly transplanted rice seedlings. With the growth of the rice seedlings and the appearance of aquatic macrophytes, open water ricefields were transformed into vegetated littoral conditions precipitating the disappearance of M. micrura and the appearance of the littoral A. guttata and M. spinosa, and the eurytopic D. excisum. The cladoceran community was affected by spraying of the pesticide FMC35001, an analogue of Furadan®. The response of the four dominant species to the pesticide treatment is discussed.  相似文献

Four experiments were conducted to evaluate Microcystis as food for zooplankton in Lake Kasumigaura, and the following results were obtained. (1) Moina micrura (Cladocera) showed little growth and no reproduction when the animal was reared with Microcystis cultured in the laboratory. The animal did not grow nor reproduce well when Chlorella was mixed with Microcystis as food. (2) Moina micrura assimilated Microcystis much less than Chlorella when the animal fed on single species of Microcystis or a mixture with Chlorella. (3) Microcystis collected from Lake Kasumigaura could not be utilized by Moina micrura even though the colonies were broken up into edible sizes. However, the alga turned into utilizable food when it was decomposed. (4) No inhibitors of Moina micrura population growth could be found in the non-filtered water of Lake Kasumigaura where Microcystis was blooming heavily. Decomposed Microcystis seemed to be utilized by zooplankton as an important food source in Lake Kasumigaura.  相似文献

Habitat orientation has recently been demonstrated to affect the foraging behavior, growth, and production of plankton grazers. Because the orientation effect may vary with species, we hypothesize that habitat orientation may alter interspecific interactions between animal species. We experimentally investigated how habitat orientation (placing cuboid chambers in three orientations with long, medium, and small side as the chamber height) affected the interaction between two common cladoceran species, Daphnia magna and Moina micrura, which competitively exploited green algae of Chlorella pyrenoidosa at two volume scales (64 and 512 ml). Results show that chamber orientation and volume additively affected the behavior and species performance of the grazers. Specifically, both grazer species generally decreased their average swimming velocity, grazing rate (on algal cells), body size, and survival and reproduction rates with increasing chamber height for both chamber volumes and with decreasing chamber volume regardless of chamber orientation. Nevertheless, the decrease magnitude was greater for M. micrura with increasing chamber height but was greater for D. magna with decreasing chamber volume. Correspondingly, when cocultured, the density ratio of D. magna to M. micrura increased with increasing chamber height but decreased with decreasing chamber volume. At the end of the experiment, none of D. magna individuals survived in the small and short (large‐based) chambers, and few M. micrura individuals survived in large and tall (small‐based) chambers. These results indicate that both habitat orientation and size affect the outcome of interspecific competition between grazer species. We suggest that variation in habitat orientation may improve community coexistence and species diversity in nature.  相似文献

Species composition, abundance, and spatial distribution of rotifer and crustacean zooplankton were studied in Lake Ziway from late April to early July 2004. A total of 49 rotifer species was recorded, with Anuraeopsis fissa, Brachionus angularis, Filinia novaezealandiae, and Trichocerca ruttneri being numerically dominant. Variation in abundance was extremely high, ranging from 2 to 1000+ individuals per litre. There was no significant difference in the distribution of rotifer species between inshore and offshore regions. Crustacean species richness was low, with only five cladoceran and three copepod species occurring in the open water. Moina micrura and Diaphanosoma excisum dominated the cladoceran community, whereas Thermocyclops decipiens was the dominant copepod. Although numerically dominant (75%), rotifers accounted for less than 30% of mean total zooplankton biomass. Peak abundance of crustaceans was observed in May and June, following the onset of the rainy season and increased phytoplankton production. Variation in the spatial distribution of crustacean species was neither observed horizontally between inshore and offshore areas nor vertically in the highly turbid and wind exposed deeper part of the lake. On the other hand, Moina micrura varied significantly in size between inshore and offshore areas. Adult M. micrura dominated offshore, whereas juveniles were more abundant inshore, suggesting a predominantly littoral selective predation on large and adult crustaceans by fish. The influence of two seston fractions, < 20 µm (nanoplankton) and 20 µm (microplankton), on growth and reproduction of cladoceran species with different sizes, from Lake Monte Alegre, was evaluated through individual growth and life table experiments. Size, shape and other features of the algae in the fractions were described. The procedure of filtering lake water through a 20 µm net for seston fractionation caused mutual contamination. The smallest cladoceran species, Ceriodaphnia cornuta Sars and Moina micrura Kurz, produced larger clutch sizes and exhibited higher intrinsic rates of population growth (r) in the nanoplankton, despite contamination of their food by inedible algae. The largest species, Simocephalus mixtus Sars, produced larger clutch sizes in the microplankton. There were no differences in juvenile biomass growth between treatments for M. micrura and Daphnia gessneri Herbst, but lower value of the exponential growth rate (g) in the microplankton was significant for M. micrura. Fecundity (eggs/total female) of M. micrura was significantly lower in the microplankton, while D. gessneri did not reproduce in this fraction, at the end of growth experiments. Spines, colonies, cenobium, filaments, hard cell wall, and gelatinous sheaths, represented constraints to cladoceran reproductive performance, besides algae size. Microplankton contamination by nanoplanktonic algae, in the experiments, probably minimized the negative effect of inedible algae. Nanoplankton was more suitable for the smallest species and microplankton for the largest one.  相似文献

With a view to converting human urine into bio-wealth in the form of zooplankton, the nutrient potentials of liquid wastes (0.11 mL L−1)—(i) human urine (♂), (ii) cow urine, (iii) human–cow mixed urine or some solid wastes (0.11 g L−1): (iv) vermi-compost, (v) cow dung, (vi) poultry droppings and (vii) mixed wastes (vermi-cow-poultry)—were evaluated for the mass culture of zooplankton Moina micrura in 24 outdoor tanks (4500 L) in triplicate treatments using life table as indicator during the period of October–December, 2005. Neonates of Moina micrura held in the treatment with human urine started reproduction at least 4 days earlier than other solid wastes tested. Total number of Moina micrura enumerated in the culture tank, related with offspring production per life span, was maximum in case of human urine treatment, followed by human–cow mixed urine, cow urine, vermin-compost, poultry droppings, mixed wastes (vermin–cow–poultry), cow dung and control treatments. The relationship between the total offspring production per female per life span and the nitrogen content of water in different treatments implied that human urine was an excellent liquid waste that can be used for the mass production of zooplankton Moina micrura required for larval and post larval rearing of commercial fishes.  相似文献

The natural diet of herbivorous zooplankton was analyzed for a better understanding of the trophic relationships in Lake Xolotlán (Managua). Gut content of the most common zooplankton species (Arctodiaptomus dorsalis, Moina micrura andDiaphanosoma fluviatile) were analyzed. The quality and the relative abundance of ingested algae was studied. The most consumed algae during the dry season (February) wereCyclotella, Oocystis andLyngbya, and during the rainy season (November)Cyclotella, Oocystis andChroococcus. The kind of food ingested byA. dorsalis andM. micrura was similar in both periods. There was no similarity with the diet ofD. fluviatile. During the dry season, when algal biomass in the lake was high,A. dorsalis andM. micrura ingested a higher proportion of diatoms. During the rainy season, when food was scarce, the diet was more diverse and bluegreen algae (Chroococcus) were ingested in a larger proportion.Diaphanosoma fluviatile ingested predominantly tiny particles (bacteria and detritus) and algal food consisted mainly of green algae (Oocystis) and probably (not studied) nanoplanktonic algae. The results were consistent with those obtained in other lakes, indicating the importance of diatoms and green algae for zooplankton nutrition.  相似文献

The zooplankton of 18 reservoirs of South China was investigated in 2000. 61 Rotifera species, 23 Cladoceras and 14 Copepodas were identified. The most frequent Rotifera genera were Keratella, Brachionus, Trichocerca, Diurella, Ascomorpha, Polyarthra, Ploesoma, Asplanchna, Pompholyx and Conochilus. Bosmina longirostris, Bosminopsis deitersi, Diaphanosoma birgei, D. brachyurum and Moina micrura were typical of Cladocera in the reservoirs. Phyllodiaptomus tunguidus, Neodiaptomus schmackeri and Mesocyclops leuckarti were the most frequent Copepoda and M. leuckarti dominated Copepoda in most reservoirs. High zooplankton species richness with low abundance was characteristic of the throughflowing reservoir, whereas low species richness with low abundance was found in the reservoir with the longest retention time. Relative high abundance and medium species diversity were the distinction of intermediate retention time reservoirs.  相似文献

1. Based on two mesocosm experiments and 10 in vitro predation experiments, this work aimed to evaluate the impact of nutrient supply and Chaoborus predation on the structure of the zooplankton community in a small reservoir in Côte d'Ivoire. 2. During the first mesocosm experiment (M1), P enrichment had no effect on phytoplankton biomass (chlorophyll a) but significantly increased the biomass of some herbivorous zooplankton species (Filinia sp, Ceriodaphnia affinis). During the second experiment (M2), N and P enrichment greatly increased phytoplankton biomass, rotifers and cladocerans (C. affinis, C. cornuta, Moina micrura and Diaphanosoma excisum). In both experiments, nutrient addition had a negative impact on cyclopoid copepods. 3. Larger zooplankton, such as cladocerans or copepodites and adults of Thermocyclops sp., were significantly reduced in enclosures with Chaoborus in both mesocosm experiments, whereas there was no significant reduction of rotifers and copepod nauplii. This selective predation by Chaoborus shaped the zooplankton community and modified its size structure. In addition, a significant Chaoborus effect on chlorophyll a was shown in both experiments. 4. The preference of Chaoborus for larger prey was confirmed in the predation experiments. Cladocerans D. excisum and M. micrura were the most selected prey. Rotifer abundance was not significantly reduced in any of the 10 experiments performed. 5. In conclusion, both bottom‐up and top‐down factors may exert a structuring control on the zooplankton community. Nutrients favoured more strictly herbivorous taxa and disadvantaged the cyclopoid copepods. Chaoborus predation had a strong direct negative impact on larger crustaceans, favoured small herbivores (rotifer, nauplii) and seemed to cascade down to phytoplankton.  相似文献

The cladocerans Ceriodaphnia richardi, Daphnia ambigua, D. gessneri and Moina micrura were used to access food quality of Lake Monte Alegre’s seston. Experiments were carried out in summer and autumn as growth assays with lake seston only (control) and seston supplemented with phosphate, fatty acids or Synechococcus, and Scenedesmus. In summer, high C:P ratios in seston suggested strong phosphorus limitation, however, contrary to the expectations of stoichiometric theory, the addition of phosphate to seston did not improve cladoceran growth. Addition of PUFA increased growth rates and clutch size of D. gessneri, suggesting a possible deficiency in essential fatty acids in summer. Addition of Scenedesmus increased significantly growth rates of the cladocerans D. gessneri and C. cornuta, suggesting energy limitation in summer. In autumn, C:P ratios were lower than in summer, but still above the threshold ratio for Daphnia. At this time, addition of phosphate increased significantly growth rates of Daphnia suggesting strong P limitation, especially in D. gessneri. However, energy limitation was still important in autumn, as suggested by a further increase in growth rates in +Syn and +Sce treatments. Energy limitation was especially strong for Moina micrura, which is a fast-growing species, with high P content. Algal digestion resistance is a plausible hypothesis for energy limitation, since carbon concentrations in both seasons were above incipient limiting levels. These results show that the seston C:P ratio was not a consistent predictor of cladoceran P limitation and that factors other than P and energy limitation seem to be also important, such as PUFA or other biochemical factors. Investigations on the life histories of two cladocerans, Moina brachiata and Daphnia obtusa, in a small, nearly temporary pond in South Germany revealed that M. brachiata is better adapted to fluctuating environmental conditions; the species dominated from May to October. D. obtusa was present in spring and autumn/winter but disappeared completely during the summer months. Both species coexisted for extended periods in spring and autumn; abundance of D. obtusa was generally by an order of magnitute lower. Four periods of low water level were slightly preceded by or coincided with a decrease of clutch size, a decrease of the proportion of egg bearing females indicating that both species suffered from food shortage. Laboratory investigations on life history parameters showed that the two species have different temperature tolerances and preferences. M. brachiata showed its highest reproductive success at 25 and 30°C but died at temperatures <15°C and ≥ 35°C. D. obtusa experienced a broader temperature range (2 to 25°C) but could not withstand temperatures ≥ 30°C. Short term starvation periods (3d) caused the death of M. brachiata females, while D. obtusa soon recovered and reproduced when being refed. M. brachiata is a typical r-species with early reproduction, rapid development, high population growth rates and a high tendency to produce resting eggs; D. obtusa pursues more the concept of k-selection.  相似文献

Kept in the laboratory at 28°–30° C, the cosmopolitan cladoceran, Scapholeberis kingi produces about 239 eggs during a life of 20.56 days duration. It has two pre-adult and seventeen adult instars. The duration of preadult and adult instars was compared with other tropical Cladocera. Egg production was found to be uniformly high with minor fluctuations. The various events in the life cycle and their significance have been compared with those of related species. The rate of egg production, expressed on a cumulative basis was found to be higher (a = 1.3326) than that of Simocephalus acutirostratus King, Moina micrura Kurz and Ceriodaphnia cornuta Sars and lower than that of Daphnia carinata King. The general pattern of embryonic development of S. kingi shows close similarities to that of allied tropical and temperate species, though differences in duration of the embryonic period were recorded.  相似文献

Life-table experiments were performed with two strains of Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii, a saxitoxin-producing strain (T3) and a non-saxitoxin-producing strain (NPLP-1) combined with the green algae Ankistrodesmus falcatus, aiming to detect effects on the reproduction of three cladocerans species: Daphnia pulex, Daphnia gessneri and Moina micrura. Survivorship, age at first reproduction, clutch size and population growth rate during 12–15 days were recorded. Cladocerans showed different susceptibility to saxitoxin-producing strain (T3), with D. pulex and M. micrura being negatively affected, followed by and D. gessneri, which did not show any decrease in fitness and performed even better than the controls with this strain. A reverse response was found in experiments with the non-saxitoxin-producing strain (NPLP-1): while D. pulex and M. micrura had an increase, D. gessneri showed a significant decrease in fitness, suggesting that this strain may produce some bioactive compound. The contrasting responses of the cladoceran species to saxitoxins and non-saxitoxin-producing strains of C. raciborskii suggest that the presence of this cyanobacterium may be a selective factor in determining the composition of zooplankton communities.  相似文献

Experiments conducted on the larvae of the catfish Heterobranchuslongifilis fed on several planktonic species showed that subitaneousegg viability was roughly conserved after larval gut passagefor copepods (Apocyclops panamensis), lowered for rotifers (Brachionuscalyciflorus and Epiphanes macrourus) and nil for cladocerans(Moina micrura and Diaphanosoma excisum). These results arediscussed mainly with regard to conditions and possible variationsand impact of the egg viability phenomenon.  相似文献
