Rates of photosynthesis were measured for shade-adapted conifer needles [ Picea abies (L.) Karst., Picea glauca (Moench) Voss, Picea mariana (Mill.) B. S. P., Picea sitchensis (Bong.) Carr., Pinus sylvestris L.] illuminated on i) their top surface, ii) their top and bottom surfaces simultaneously, or iii) uniformly in a light integrating sphere. The rate of bending of the light response curve of photosynthesis was strongly correlated with the amount of chlorophyll per unit of illuminated leaf area, when the amounts of chlorophyll were above 200 mg m−2. Below 200 mg m−2 only small differences in the rate of bending occurred and the light response curves took the form of a quasi-Blackman response. At chlorophyll contents below 200 mg m−2 the rate of bending of the light response curves was insignificantly different from a mean published value for enzymatically isolated cells of angiosperm leaves (I. Terashima and T. Saeki. Ann. Bot. 56: 489–499, 1985). The apparent quantum yield of photosynthesis (based on incident light) also showed a response to chlorophyll content not different from the pattern reported for angiosperm leaves (E. K. Gabrielsen. Physiol. Plantarum 1: 5–37, 1948). Neither CO2 nor O2 concentration significantly affected the rate of bending of the light response curves. It is concluded that the light response curve of individual chlorenchyma cells is a quasi-Blackman response and that the rate of bending of the light response curve of intact leaves is a strong function of the development of gradients of light and thus the chlorophyll content of leaves.  相似文献

Quantum requirements of photosynthetic electron transport have been measured in shoots of Picea sitchensis (Bong.) Carr. (Sitka spruce) from different levels in a forest canopy and in shoots from plants grown in contrasting light environments in controlled environment chambers. Neutral density filters were used to obtain very low photon flux densities. The light absorbed by the chloroplast suspensions was calculated from measurements of the transmittance of the suspensions. The shoots from the top of the forest canopy (“sun” shoots) had lower quantum requirements for photosystems I and II than the shoots from the bottom of the forest canopy (“shade” shoots). High light grown plants and “sun” shoots had higher rates of electron transport at light saturation than low light grown plants and “shade” shoots. Thus a higher potential for electron transport was found to exist in “sun” shoots than in “shade” shoots at both high and low photon flux densities.  相似文献

Shoots from the lower levels of a Sitka forest canopy [Picea sitchensis (Bong.) Carr.] have much lower photosynthetic capacities per unit leaf area than do those from the top of the canopy. Chloroplast fragments have been isolated from the needles at three levels in the canopy and Photosystem I and Photosystem II activities measured. Measurements were made at eight photon flux densities giving light response curves for photosystem activity in the three canopy levels. Expressed per unit leaf area, light-saturated activities of Photosystem I and II were lower at the bottom of the canopy than at the top suggesting that photosystem activity might be limiting photosynthesis in the shoots from the bottom of the canopy. Chlorophyll concentration per unit fresh weight did not vary amongst the three levels, but specific leaf area increased and dry weight fraction decreased with increasing depth in the canopy, leading to a large reduction with depth in chlorophyll content per unit leaf area.  相似文献

Inhibition of photosynthesis was followed during autumn and early winter in current-year sun and shade needles of unfertilized and fertilized Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.] by simultaneous measurements of photosynthetic O2 evolution and chlorophyll a fluorescence at 20 °C. The CO2-saturated rate of O2 evolution was generally higher in sun needles of fertilized trees than in those of unfertilized trees over a wide range of incident photon flux densities (PFDs). Furthermore, the maximum photo-chemical efficiency of photosystem (PS) II, as indicated by the ratio of variable to maximum fluorescence (FV/FM) was generally higher for sun needles of fertilized trees. The depression of fv/fm during frost periods was more pronounced in sun needles than in shade needles, indicating that winter inhibition in Norway spruce is strongly light-dependent. However, the inhibition of the rate of O2 evolution at high PFDs in needles of fertilized trees during early winter was partly independent of the light regime experienced by those needles in the field, which appeared to result in a pronounced decrease in the proportion of oxidized PS II reaction centres in shade needles. A nearly identical linear relationship between the quantum yield of PS II electron transport determined by chlorophyll fluorescence and the quantum yield of O2 evolution (gross rate of O2 evolution/PFD) was obtained for the investigated types of needles during autumn and early winter. Except for shade needles of fertilized trees, this appeared to be largely achieved by adjustments in thermal energy dissipation within PS II.  相似文献

In order to parametrize a leaf submodel of a canopy level gas-exchange model, a series of photosynthesis and stomatal conductance measurements were made on leaves of white oak (Quercus alba L.) and red maple (Acer rubrum L.) in a mature deciduous forest near Oak Ridge, TN. Gas-exchange characteristics of sun leaves growing at the top of a 30 m canopy and of shade leaves growing at a depth of 3–4 m from the top of the canopy were determined. Measured rates of net photosynthesis at a leaf temperature of 30°C and saturating photosynthetic photon flux density, expressed on a leaf area basis, were significantly lower (P = 0.01; n = 8) in shade leaves (7.9μmol m?2 s?1) than in sun leaves (11–5μmol m?2 s?1). Specific leaf area increased significantly with depth in the canopy, and when photosynthesis rates were expressed on a dry mass basis, they were not significantly different for shade and sun leaves. The percentage leaf nitrogen did not vary significantly with height in the canopy; thus, rates expressed on a per unit nitrogen basis were also not significantly different in shade and sun leaves. A widely used model integrating photosynthesis and stomatal conductance was parametrized independently for sun and shade leaves, enabling us to model successfully diurnal variations in photosynthesis and evapotranspiration of both classes of leaves. Key photosynthesis model parameters were found to scale with leaf nitrogen levels. The leaf model parametrizations were then incorporated into a canopy-scale gas-exchange model that is discussed and tested in a companion paper (Baldocchi & Harley 1995, Plant, Cell and Environment 18, 1157–1173).  相似文献

We studied photosynthetic and stomatal responses of grain sorghum ( Sorghum bicolor [L.] Moench cv. Pioneer 8500), soybean ( Glycine max L. cv. Flyer) and eastern gamagrass ( Tripsacum dactyloides L.) during experimental sun and shade periods simulating summer cloud cover. Leaf gas exchange measurements of field plants showed that short-term (5 min) shading of leaves to 300–400 μmol m−2 s−1 photosynthetic photon flux density reduced photosynthesis, leaf temperature, stomatal conductance, transpiration and water use efficiency and increased intercellular CO2 partial pressure. In all species, photosynthetic recovery was delayed when leaves were reilluminated, apparently by stomatal closure. The strongest stomatal response was in soybean. Photosynthetic recovery was studied further with soybeans grown indoors (maximum photosynthetic photon flux density 1 200 μmol m−2 s−1). Plants grown indoors had responses to shade similar to those of field plants, except for brief nonstomatal limitation immediately after reillumination. These responses indicated the importance of the light environment during leaf development on assimilation responses to variable light, and suggested different limitations on carbon assimilation in different parts of the soybean canopy. Photosynthetic oxygen evolution recovered immediately upon reillumination, indicating that the light reactions did not limit soybean photosynthetic recovery. While shade periods caused stomatal closure and reduced carbon gain and water loss in all species, the consequences for carbon gain/water loss were greatest in soybean. The occurrence of stomatal closure in all three species may arise from their shared phenologies and herbaceous growth forms.  相似文献

The survival of dipterocarp seedlings in the understorey of south‐east Asian rain forests is limited by their ability to maintain a positive carbon balance. Photosynthesis during sunflecks is an important component of carbon gain. Field measurements demonstrated that Shorea leprosula seedlings in a rain forest understorey received a high proportion of daily photon flux density at temperatures supra‐optimal for photosynthesis (72% at ≥30 °C, 14% at ≥35 °C). To investigate the effect of high temperatures on photosynthesis during sunflecks, gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence measurements were made on seedlings grown in controlled environment conditions either, under uniform, saturating irradiance (approximately 539 µmol m?2 s?1) or, shade/fleck sequences (approximately 30 µmol m?2 s?1/approximately 525 µmol m?2 s?1) at two temperatures, 28 or 38 °C. The rate of light‐saturated photosynthesis, under uniform irradiance, was inhibited by 40% at 38 °C compared with 28 °C. However, during the shade/fleck sequence, photosynthesis was inhibited by 59% at 38 °C compared with 28 °C. The greater inhibition of photosynthesis during the shade/fleck sequence, when compared with uniform irradiance, was driven by the lower efficiency of dynamic photosynthesis combined with lower steady‐state rates of photosynthesis. These results suggest that, contrary to current dogma, sunfleck activity may not always result in significant carbon gain. This has important consequences for seedling regeneration processes in tropical forests as well as for leaves in other canopy positions where sunflecks make an important contribution to total photon flux density.  相似文献

A method is described for estimating the rate of accumulation of epiphyte biomass on leaves of the seagrass, Heterozostera tasmanica (Martens ex Aschers.) den Hartog and for estimating the effect of epiphyte biomass on photosynthesis of the seagrass. Epiphyte biomass was determined by comparison of the weight per unit area of epiphyte-covered and epiphyte-free leaf blades. Epiphyte weight increased as age of the seagrass leaves increased. Linear regression on epiphyte biomass vs. leaf age estimated the rate of biomass accumulation. Rates varied from 5.7 to 104 μg epiphyte dry weight per cm2 of leaf surface per day at three sites in Western Port and Port Phillip Bay, Victoria. Rates of accumulation of epiphyte biomass were generally higher during December through March (summer) than in May (autumn), August (winter) or October (Spring). Light attenuation by epiphytes increase linearly with biomass. The rate of biomass accumulation of epiphytes was compared with leaf growth rate, ambient photon flux density in H. tasmanica beds and the photosynthesis—photon flux density curve of H. tasmanica. This comparison demonstrated that epiphyte biomass can accumulate fast enough to shade H. tasmanica leaves and significantly reduce the time (to less than one half of the leaf life span) in which positive net photosynthesis of the leaf blade is possible.  相似文献

Photosynthetic responses to irradiance by the grey mangrove, Avicennia marina (Forstk.) Vierh var. australasica (Walp.) Moldenke, were studied using seedlings grown under natural understory shade and exposed conditions as well as in the laboratory under high and low light regimes, i.e. 100% and 6% sunlight, respectively. Leaves in exposed locations were subjected to daylight quantum flux densities greater than 1,000 microeinsteins per square meter per second from 0900 to 1700 hours, whereas those in understory shade experienced only 30 to 120 microeinsteins per square meter per second, interrupted for brief periods by sunflecks ranging in quantum flux density from 800 to 1,500 microeinsteins per square meter per second. The low light regime was similar in light intensity to that of the understory environment, but lacked sunflecks.

Leaves from the understory environment showed several properties of `shade' leaves; i.e. they contained more chlorophyll on both a leaf area and fresh weight basis but had a lower specific weight and greater area than exposed leaves, and were enriched in chlorophyll b relative to a. However, there were no significant differences in either the gas exchange or leaf chlorophyll fluorescence characteristics of the two populations, both being typical of `sun' leaves.

Leaves grown in the laboratory under low and high light regimes had similar properties. However, light saturated assimilation rates in the leaves from the low light treatment were 20% less and became light saturated at a lower quantum flux density than those of leaves grown under the high light regime. The ecological significance of these results is discussed.

We have studied the plasticity of the photosynthetic apparatus in the endangered aquatic macrophyte Althenia orientalis to the gradient of light availability within its meadow canopy. We determined diurnal change in situ irradiance, light quality, in vivo chlorophyll a fluorescence, ex situ oxygen evolution rates, respiration rate and pigment concentration. The levels of photosynthetic photon flux density (PFD) and ultraviolet radiation (UVR) and the red/far-red ratio decreased with depth within the canopies of A. orientalis. Apical leaves had a greater decrease of the maximal quantum yield (F v/F m) in the morning and a faster recovery rate in the afternoon than those in the basal ones. The relative electron transport rate (ETRr) was not saturated at any time of the day, even in the apical leaves that received the highest light. The maximum light-saturated rate of gross photosynthesis (GPmax) took place in apical leaves around noon. The chlorophyll a/b ratio values were higher, and the chlorophyll/carotenoid ratio values lower, in apical leaves than basal ones. The highest concentrations in total carotenoids were reached in the apical leaves around noon. A. orientalis has a high capacity to acclimatize to the changes in the light environment, both in quality and quantity, presenting sun and shade leaves in the same stem through the vertical gradient in the canopy.  相似文献

Contribution of intercellular reflectance to photosynthesis in shade leaves   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:2
The potential contribution of intercellular light reflectance to photosynthesis was investigated by infiltrating shade leaves with mineral oil. Infiltration of leaves of Hydrophyllum canadense and Asarum canadense with mineral oil decreased adaxial leaf reflectance but increased transmittance. As a result of the large increase in transmittance, infiltration caused a decrease in absorptance of 25% and 30% at 550 and 750 nm, respectively. Thus, intercellular reflectance increased absorptance in these species by this amount. In a comparison of sun and shade leaves of Acer saccharum and Parthenocissus quinquefolia, oil infiltration decreased absorptance more in shade than in sun leaves. This difference suggests that the higher proportion of spongy mesophyll in shade leaves may increase internal light scattering and thus absorptance. The importance of the spongy mesophyll in increasing internal reflectance was also evident in comparisons of the optics of Populus leaves and in the fluorescence yield of oil-infiltrated leaves of several sun and shade species. Oil infiltration decreased the quantum yield of fluorescence (Fo) by 39–52% for shade leaves but only 21–25% for sun leaves. We conclude that the greater proportion of spongy parenchyma in shade leaves increased intercellular light scattering and thus absorptance. Direct measurements with fibre-optic light probes of the distribution of light inside leaves of Hydrophyllum canadense confirmed that oil infiltration decreased the amount of back-scattered light and that most of the light scattering for this species occurred from the middle of the palisade layer to the middle of the spongy mesophyll. We were not, however, able to assess the potential contribution of reflectance from the internal abaxial epidermis to total internal light scattering in these experiments. Using a mathematical model to compare the response of net photosynthesis (O2, flux) to incident irradiance for control leaves of H. canadense and theoretical leaves with no intercellular reflectance, we calculated that intercellular reflectance caused a 1.97-fold increase in photosynthesis at 20 μmol m?2s?1 (incident photon flux density). This enhancement of absorption and photosynthesis by inter-cellular reflectance, without additional production and maintenance of photosynthetic pigments, may maintain shade leaves above the photosynthetic light compensation point between sunflecks and maintain the light induction state during protracted periods of low diffuse light.  相似文献

The effects of photon flux density and temperature on net photosynthesis and transpiration rates of mature and immature leaves of three-year-old Japanese larch Larix kaempferi (Lamb.) Sarg. trees were determined with an infrared, differential open gas analysis system. Net photosynthetic response to increasing photon flux densities was similar for different foliage positions and stage of maturity. Light compensation was between 25 and 50 μmol m−2 s−1. Rates of photosynthesis increased rapidly at photon flux densities above the compensation level and became saturated between 800 and 1000 μmol m−2 s−1. Transpiration rates at constant temperature likewise increased with increasing photon flux density, and leveled off between 800 and 1000 μmol m−2 s−1. Photosynthetic response to temperature was determined in saturating light and was similar for all foliage positions; it increased steadily from low temperatures to an optimum range betweeen 15 and 21°C and then decreased rapidly above 21°C. Transpiration rate, however, increased continuously with rising temperature up to the experimental maximum. CO2 compensation concentrations for mature foliage varied between 58 and 59 μl l−1; however, foliage borne at the apex of the terminal leader compensated at 75 μl l−1. None of these data support the claim that Japanese larch possesses C4 photosynthetic characteristics.  相似文献

In the French Alps, Soldanella alpina (S. alpina) grow under shade and sun conditions during the vegetation period. This species was investigated as a model for the dynamic acclimation of shade leaves to the sun under natural alpine conditions, in terms of photosynthesis and leaf anatomy. Photosynthetic activity in sun leaves was only slightly higher than in shade leaves. The leaf thickness, the stomatal density and the epidermal flavonoid content were markedly higher, and the chlorophyll/flavonoid ratio was significantly lower in sun than in shade leaves. Sun leaves also had a more oxidised plastoquinone pool, their PSII efficiency in light was higher and their non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) capacity was higher than that of shade leaves. Shade-sun transferred leaves increased their leaf thickness, stomatal density and epidermal flavonoid content, while their photosynthetic activity and chlorophyll/flavonoid ratio declined compared to shade leaves. Parameters indicating protection against high light and oxidative stress, such as NPQ and ascorbate peroxidase, increased in shade-sun transferred leaves and leaf mortality increased. We conclude that the dynamic acclimation of S. alpina leaves to high light under alpine conditions mainly concerns anatomical features and epidermal flavonoid acclimation, as well as an increase in antioxidative protection. However, this increase is not large enough to prevent damage under stress conditions and to replace damaged leaves.  相似文献

The hypothesis that CO2 gas exchange and chlorophyll a fluorescence (ChlaF) of lichens vary according to the light regimes of their original habitat, as observed in vascular plants, was tested by analysing the photosynthetic performance of 12 populations of seven dorsoventral, foliose lichens collected from open, south-exposed rocks to densely shaded forests. Light response curves were induced at optimum thallus water content and ChlaF emission curves at the species-specific photon flux at which the quantum yield of CO2 assimilation is the highest and is saturating the photosynthetic process. Photosynthetic pigments were quantified in crude extracts. The results confirm that the maximum rate of gross photosynthesis is correlated with the chlorophyll content of lichens, which is influenced by light as well as by nitrogen availability. Like leaves, shade tolerant lichens emit more ChlaF than sun-loving ones, whereas the photosynthetic quantum conversion is higher in the latter.  相似文献

The correlation between structural changes of the vascular bundles and needle yellowing was examined for needles of damaged spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) growing at a Mg-deficient and ozone polluted mountain site in the Central Black Forest (840m a.s.l.). In the previous year's sun-exposed needles, the following sequence of events was observed: (1) rapid needle yellowing, (2) hypertrophy and anomalous divisions of cambium cells, (3) phloem collapse, and, (4) production of atypical xylem tracheids. Under defined shade (reduction of the photosynthetically active photon flux density of the ambient light by 85-90%), the needles remained green, while the phloem collapsed completely within the first 6 weeks of shading; subsequently, a reversal of the collapse was observed. Under both light conditions, the content of Mg not bound to chlorophyll (Mg(free)) was in the range of 0.1 mg g(-1) needle dry matter, and hardly changed throughout the investigation period. After Mg fertilization, the Mg(free) level of the previous year's needles increased to 0.2 mg g(-1) dry matter, the light-exposed needles remained green, and the vascular bundles developed no anomalies. The data show that the rapid needle yellowing of ozone-exposed Mg-deficient needles did not depend on the collapse of the phloem. Mg deficiency played a key role in the development of anomalous vascular bundles under light, and also appears to explain the transient changes in sieve cell structure under shade. The role of Mg deficiency, rather than ozone pollution, in the damage of the sieve cells was confirmed in a long-term ozone exposure experiment with young clonal spruce growing under defined conditions.  相似文献

The interpretation of leaf-drying curves   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A theoretical expression for the rate of water loss through the surface of excised leaves has been derived so that curves fitted to experimental data can be used to infer physical properties of the leaves such as the solute concentration and the conductance for water vapour loss. The use of the equations is illustrated by reference to data from an experiment in which red spruce (Picea rubens Sarg.) and Norway spruce (P. abies(L.) Karst.) seedlings were grown under five different regimes: outdoors (±50% shade), in a greenhouse (±50% shade) and in controlled-environment chambers.  相似文献

Photoinhibition of photosynthesis in Lemna gibba L. was induced by exposing intact plants to a high photosynthetic photon flux density of 1 750 μmol m−2 s−1 at a low temperature of 3°C. Subsequently isolated chloroplasts showed pronounced reductions in the capacity of whole chain electron transport, measured as Hill activity, and in the efficiency of electron transport to the primary electron acceptor Q of photosystem II, measured as variable chlorophyll fluorescence at 20°C. These changes proceeded with similar kinetics (probably of the first-order reaction), suggesting that the site of photoinhibition is in the electron transfer to Q. A partial uncoupling of the whole chain electron transport also occured. The capacity of electron transport mediated by photosystem I was unaffected. The extent of photoinhibition of photosynthetic electron transport, as produced by a 2 h exposure of L. gibba to three different combinations of photon flux density and temperature was studied. It was shown that intrinsically similar states of photoinhibition, on the evidence of their time courses of recovery, were induced by either a high photon flux density and 25°C or by a moderate photon flux density and 3°C.

Properties of C4 photosynthesis were examined in Amaranthus cruentus L. (NAD-malic enzyme (ME) subtype, dicot) grown under different light and nitrogen (N) conditions, from the viewpoint of N investment into their photosynthetic components. In low-light (LL) leaves, chlorophyll content per leaf area was greater and chlorophyll alb ratio was lower than in high-light (HL) leaves. These indicate that LL leaves invest more N into their light-harvesting systems. However, this N investment did not contribute to the increase in the quantum yield of photosynthesis on the incident photon flux density (PFD) basis (Qi) in LL leaves. N allocation to ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylasel oxygenase (Rubisco) was significantly higher in HL-high N (HN) leaves than in other leaves. On the other hand, N allocation to C4 enzymes [phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) and pyruvate Pi dikinase (PPDK)] was unaffected by the growth conditions. Maximum photosynthetic rates (Pmax) per Rubisco content were similar irrespective of the growth light treatments. Carbon isotope ratios (delta13 C) in the leaf dry matter were more negative in LL leaves than in HL leaves (LL = -19.3% per hundred, HL = -16.0% per hundred) and independent of leaf N. Vein density was highest in HL-HN leaves, and leaf thickness was unaffected by the growth light treatments. From these results, we conclude that A. cruentus leaves would not acclimate efficiently to low growth light.  相似文献
