Ciliated vacuoles and intraepithelial cysts have been observed in oviductal and endocervical epithelia of rabbits. In this study, rabbits under various hormonal conditions were studied by light and transmission electron microscopy and tissue culture in an attempt to determine their distribution and origin. Ciliated vacuoles most frequently lay in the basal cytoplasm, below or beside the nucleus, and very close to the basal lamina. A few were apically located. Their average diameter was 8.8 by 5.1 microns. Cilia and microvilli projected into the vacuolar lumen. These vacuoles were located intracellularly as evidenced first by the degeneration of both their cilia and microvilli and the moderately dense matrix that often filled the vacuolar lumen, as observed by electron microscopy. Secondly, phase microscopy of the living endocervical epithelium allowed us to observe the beating of the cilia within the vacuoles, not on the surface of such cells. Thirdly, ruthenium red stained the surface glycocalyx of ciliated and secretory cells, but not that of the cilia and microvilli within the vacuoles. The intraepithelial cysts were not observed in all tissue blocks. The largest numbers were found in ovariectomized animals treated for 3 and 5 days with estradiol. More were seen in the isthmus and cervix than in the fimbria and ampulla. The cysts were located most often within the epithelium along the sides of, and at the bases of, the mucosal folds. They were lined by flattened epithelium of various combinations of secretory and ciliated cells. An unusual cell type was associated with some of the cysts and ciliated vacuoles. Its cytoplasm contained aggregates of mitochondria and vesicles whose contents varied in density. Although the genesis of the ciliated vacuoles is not certain, our results indicate that they may arise from aberrant positioning of proliferating procentrioles or from a defect in targeting or transporting the centrioles to the apical plasma membrane to serve as basal bodies. Fusion of adjacent ciliated vacuoles with lumina lined by secretory cells having deep apical invaginations appeared to contribute to the formation of cysts.  相似文献

The ultrastructure of the digestive tract of tornaria larva of enteropneusts was investigated. It showed that the digestive tract consists of three parts: esophagus, stomach, and intestine. The esophagus epithelium consists of two types of multiciliated epithelial cells and solitary muscle cells. Axonal tracts and neurons were found in the ventral wall of the esophagus. The cardiac sphincter contains an anterior band of strongly ciliated cells and a posterior band of cells with long vacuolized processes which partition the sphincter lumen. The stomach consists of three cell types: (1) cells with electron-opaque cytoplasm, bearing a fringed border on their apical sides; (2, 3) sparse cells with electron-light cytoplasm and different patterns of apical microvilli. Cells of the pyloric sphincter bear numerous cilia and almost no microvilli. The intestine consists of three parts. The anterior part is formed of multiciliated cells which bear the fringed border. The middle part consists of flattened cells bearing rare cilia and vast numbers of mace-like microvilli. The posterior part of the intestine is formed of cells bearing numerous cilia and few microvilli. Muscle cells were not found in either stomach or intestine epithelium. One noticed that the structure of the digestive tract of enteropneust tornaria larva differs from that of echinoid pluteus larva.  相似文献

Opheliid nuchal organs are composed of ciliated cells, retractor muscles, and sensory cells. The perikarya of sensory cells are located in the posterior portion of the brain, and their distal processes extend along the body wall, as the nuchal nerve, and terminate just anterior to the ciliated region. The nuchal nerve of the juvenile is composed of 30–35 dendrites; the adult nuchal nerve has 35–40 dendrites. The ends of the sensory dendrites form sensory bulbs which are clustered around the olfactory chamber, and each bulb bears a modified cilium. Sensory cilia lose their axonemes and extend as microvillous-like structures into the olfactory chamber. Supportive cells delineate approximately the posterior and dorsal portions of the chamber with sensory bulbs forming the remaining ventral and anterior portions. On the lateral aspect of the chamber, cuticular matrix extends into it, and in this area supportive cells bear microvilli which extend into the matrix. The adult nuchal organ is larger than that of the juvenile, and the sensory portion of the olfactory chamber wall is expanded. Expansion of the sensory area is apparently the result of size increase in sensory bulbs and by intrusion of supportive cells between sensory bulbs.  相似文献

The oviduct of non-pregnant females of the ovoviviparous salamander, Salamandra salamandra, was examined using SEM-techniques. In the luminal epithelium polygonal ciliated cells were found along the entire surface of the oviduct, except the uterus, and non-ciliated cells with a varying number of short or long microvilli. The ciliated cells occur in the most anterior portion of the oviduct, the pars recta; they are sparsely distributed in the p. convoluta I, but abundant in the p. convoluta II and III. Non-ciliated cells comprise several small gland cells, restricted to the p. convoluta I, II, III, and undifferentiated cells both provided with microvilli, but difficult to be discerned from their surface appearance. The p. convoluta I, II, III is characterized by three types of secretory cells forming tubular glands, each type confined to a given zone. The secretory cells have slender microvilli at their surfaces. In freeze-cracked glands details of their secretory products can be visualized. The findings are compared to previously published TEM-investigations and discussed with regard to some functions of the oviduct during reproduction.  相似文献

Summary The epithelial surface of the bovine Fallopian tube has been studied with respect to its ultrastructure and alkaline phosphatase activity. The ciliated cells were found to be provided with cilia and microvilli. The cilia were placed in rows and were most frequent in the central area of each cell surface. The basal corpuscles were provided with indistinct rootlets. The microvilli occurred between the cilia, but showed the reverse distribution, being most frequent towards the periphery of the cell surface. As a rule a marked alkaline phosphatase activity could be revealed on the ciliated cell surface, presumably associated with the microvilli. The secretory cells were bulging over the surface of the ciliated cells. Theywere provided with irregular protrusions, which were as a rule long and slender during the follicular phase but shorter and bulkier during the luteal phase. No alkaline phosphatase activity was detected. This investigation was supported by a grant from the foundation Thérèse och Johan Anderssons Minne.  相似文献

Morphology of rabbit collecting duct.   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Recently the assumed structural and functional homogeneity of the collecting duct (CD) has been questioned. The objective of this study was to determine if heterogeneity occurs in luminal surface membrane structure or in cytoplasmic configuration of cells in the collecting duct or both. Straight segments of cortical and medullary CD were examined in perfusion-fixed rabbit kidneys with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), light (LM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Principal cells were the most abundant cells in all CD regions; intercalated cells comprised 37% of the cell population on the cortex, 18% in the outer medulla, and less than 1% in the inner medulla. SEM revealed two surface patterns among the ciliated principal cells: 1, located in the cortex and outer medulla, with few surface microvilli, and 2, located in the inner medulla, with abundant microvilli. Intercalated cells exhibited four distinctive luminal surface configurations: I, numerous short microvilli; II, both short and elongate microvilli; III, microplicae alone; and IV, both microvilli and microplicae. Intercalated cells with patterns I and II were predominant in the cortex, while cells with patterns III and IV were most common at the corticomedullary junction. TEM confirmed that marked variation existed in cytoplasmic structures of both principal and intercalated cells. These findings may either indicate the presence of several specific types of principal and intercalated cells or reflect different functional states of the principal and intercalated cells. Regardless of their significance, their presence must be considered in studies seeking to establish precise structural-functional relationships in this region of the rabbit renal tubule.  相似文献

The fine structure of the epidermis and cuticle has been described for the oligochaete Aeolosoma bengalense. The epidermis is a pseudostratified epithelium and consists of the following cell types: ciliated and nonciliated supportive cells, pigment cells and associated satellite cells, mucous cells, basal cells, and ciliated non-supportive columnar cells. Overlying and restricted to the supportive cells is a delicate cuticle composed of: (a) a discontinuous layer of membrane-bounded surface particles; (b) a thin filamentous layer of moderate electron density just under the surface particles; (c) a thicker inner filamentous layer of low electron density. Digestion with pronase effectively removes the cuticle. This, together with the fact that it stains with alcian blue and ruthenium red, indicates that the cuticle contains an acid mucopolysaccharide. Regeneration of the cuticle, following pronase treatment, is marked by the elaboration of numerous microvilli by the supportive cells. Most of the microvilli are transitory and evidence supports a microvillar origin for the cuticular surface particles. The presence of cuticular surface particles may be a characteristic shared in common by all oligochaetes and, perhaps, some polychaetes.  相似文献

Summary Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to examine the surface features of the subcommissural organ (SCO) and the roof of the cerebral aqueduct of 35 adult and 33 pouch-young Trichosurus vulpecula. The animals were at various developmental stages and of both sexes. In the adult animals, the surfaces of the groove and the adjacent medial walls of the ridges of the SCO were characterized primarily by microvilli. Typically, Reissner's fibre was associated closely with the median groove of the SCO. The ridges and the paramedian grooves of the SCO were often heavily ciliated displaying many cerebrospinal fluid-contacting nerve processes. These processes were of varying lengths with terminal and preterminal varicosities. The observed morphology supports a hypothesis suggesting that under certain physiological and pathological conditions the flow of CSF may be directed away from the heavily ciliated ridges to the poorly ciliated groove containing the Reissner's fibre. In the youngest pouch-young animals there were no cilia, CSF-contacting nerve processes, nor supraependymal cells. Also the surface features of the SCO in the young assumed adult appearance before the adjacent roof of the cerebral aqueduct. These findings suggest the possibility that the SCO begins to function early in ontogenetic development. Acknowledgement. Technical assistance of Mrs. G. Summary The multicellular epithelial organs in Proteus anguinus, which Bugnion (1873) assumed to be developing neuromasts, have been analyzed by lightand electron-microscopy. Their fundamental structure consists of single ampullae with sensory and accessory cells with apical parts that extend into the pit of the ampulla, and of a short jelly-filled canal connecting the ampulla pit with the surface of the skin. The organs are located intra-epithelially and are supported by a tiny dermal papilla. The cell elements of sensory epithelium are apically linked together by tight junctions. The free apical surface of the sensory cell bears several hundred densely packed stereocilia-like microvilli whereas the basal surface displays afferent neurosensory junctions with a pronounced round synaptic body. The compact uniform organization of the apical microvillous part shows a hexagonal pattern. A basal body was found in some sensory cells whereas a kinocilium was observed only in a single cell. The accessory cells have their free surface differentiated in a sparsely distributed and frequently-forked microvilli. The canal wall is built of two or three layers of tightly coalescent flat cells bordering on the lumen with branching microvilli. The ultrastructure of the content of the ampulla pit is presented. In the discussion stress is laid on the peculiarities of the natural history of Proteus anguinus that support the view that the morphologically-identified ampullary organs are electroreceptive. The structural characteristics of ampullary receptor cells are dealt with from the viewpoint of functional morphology and in the light of evolutionary hypotheses of ampullary organs.  相似文献

The ovarian cavity and the oviduct of Alburnus alburnus were investigated by histological, fine structural and (enzyme-) histochemical methods, and the ovarian fluid was analysed. Within the ovary there exists a system of communicating cavities, the ovarian cavity, which caudally continues with the oviduct. The ovarian cavity is bordered by an epithelium which is secretory active and covered with microvilli. It is involved in the formation of an ionic gradient in the ovarian fluid, in the secretion of glucose, proteins and enzymes (acid phosphatase, protease, beta d-glucuronidase) and in the synthesis of glucuronide steroids which is established by analysis data of the ovarian fluid. It has also auto- and heterophagocytotic activity. The oviduct epithelium consists mainly of ciliated cells which direct the eggs through the oviduct. Between the ciliated cells, clusters of microvilli cells are located which are similar to the epithelium of the ovarian cavity.  相似文献

Colloid-containing follicles and ciliated cysts in the hypophysial pars tuberalis of guinea pigs at various ages ranging from 5 days to 36 months were examined by periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) reaction, immunohistochemistry, and electron microscopy. The follicles storing PAS-positive colloid were encountered in the pars tuberalis of all guinea pigs examined, although only a few were present in young animals. The follicles gradually increased in number with age. The largest number of follicles was found in the senile male group: 141.3 +/- 11.9, about 10 times the number in the 5-day-old male group. The follicles were scattered throughout the entire length of the pars tuberalis. Follicles with enlarged luminal cavities were concentrated in the ventral caudal region surrounding the infundibular stem and merges with the pars distalis. Three different types of follicles were found by electron microscopy: 1) those surrounded by nongranulated follicular cells that may correspond to the stellate-follicular cells in the pars distalis, 2) those surrounded by specific cells that were packed with vesicular inclusions, and 3) those surrounded by granulated cells that may be gonadotropes. In the follicles lined by non-granulated follicular cells, long, prominent microvilli and cytoplasmic processes protruding into the lumen and invaginations of colloid were often observed at the apical cell region. The follicles lined by the specific cells having numerous vesicles were localized only in the ventral caudal portion. The vesicles ranged from 200 to 700 nm in diameter, and the outer surface of their limiting membrane was partly studded with ribosomes. Gonadotropes immunoreactive to the luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) antisera were distributed in the guinea pig pars tuberalis. As well as the typical follicles described above, the follicles composed solely of granulated cells showed microvilli protruding into the cavities and junctional complexes at the apical lateral surface. They stored heterogeneous materials in the lumina. Some secretory granules gave the appearance of being discharged into the lumen. Ciliated cysts were frequently observed in the pars tuberalis; their incidence was 71.7%. The ciliated cysts were much larger than colloid-containing follicles. Cystic cavities were only partly filled with heterogeneous materials showing colloid-like, flocculent, and granular features.  相似文献

Summary The pineal gland in the possum is represented by a thickening in the wall of the pineal recess. A superficial pineal body and a pineal stalk are characteristically lacking. The ependyma related to the gland is specialized but differs markedly from the lining in other circumventricular organs in form and in surface morphology. Two distinct topographic zones have been recognized. In the middle is a mass of cells which form a prominent knobby-surfaced central zone. These cells are characterized by the absence of cilia, the paucity of microvilli and blebs and the presence of processes which overlap adjacent cells. A surface pattern formed of cell outlines was lacking. It is suggested that the central zone is lined by pinealocytes, supporting cells and the processes of both cell types. Most of the central zone is surrounded by an intermediate zone of variable width. The latter region has been observed to possess a circumventricular organ-type surface morphology. It is sparsely ciliated, almost totally covered by a carpet of microvilli and it exhibits a variety of surface specializations. Supraependymal cells and various transitory supraependymal cell processes are also present.Outside the specialized ependyma is the peripheral zone which like the regular ventricular lining is densely ciliated. Supraependymal processes are found among the clusters of cilia, or rarely, on the surface of the ciliary bed.Season and sex related differences in surface ultrastructure were not observed.  相似文献

The contractile system of the female Intoshia variabili (Orthonectida) consists of smooth muscles. The attachment of the longitudinal muscle fibres at the anterior and the posterior tips of the body is rather peculiar, accomplished by means of elongated terminal muscle cells piercing through several ciliated cells. In the last ciliated cell, the muscle cell invaginates the ciliated cell basal membrane almost up to the ciliated cell surface. Here, around the protrusion terminus, there is an electron‐dense zone in contact with the cilia rootlets.  相似文献

The ultrastructure of oviduct epithelium of clinically healthy cows and 15 sows was investigated using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. In all parts of the oviduct, ciliated and non-ciliated epithelial cells are present, but their number varies in both the investigated animals in different regions of the oviduct, depending on the phase of the estrous cycle. In addition to ciliated cells with numerous cilia on their luminal surface, so-called pale ciliary cells were found in all parts of the oviduct of cows and sows. The cytoplasm of these cells is electron-lucent, their luminal surface carries few cilia and short microvilli. The apical cytoplasm contains species specific secretory granules, which means that these cells have features characteristic of both secretory and ciliated cells. It is suggested that the pale ciliated and non-ciliated secretory cells are functional stages of the same tubar epithelium cell, and that the transformation between these two cell types is regulated by functional requirements of the organ in different phases of the estrous cycle.  相似文献

The secretory processes in the shell gland of laying chickens were the subject of this study. Three cell types contribute secretory material to the forming egg: ciliated and non-ciliated columnar cells of the uterine surface epithelium, and cells of tubular glands in the mucosa. The ciliated cells as well as the non-ciliated cells have microvilli, which undergo changes in form and extent during the secretory cycle. At the final stages of shell formation they resemble stereocilia. It is postulated that the microvilli of both cells are active in the production of the cuticle of the shell. The ciliated cell which has both cilia and microvilli manufactures secretory granules which arise from the Golgi complex in varying amounts throughout the egg laying cycle. Granule production reaches its greatest intensity during the early stages of shell deposition. The ciliated cell probably supplies proteinaceous material to the matrix of the forming egg shell. The non-ciliated cell has only microvilli. Secretory granules, containing an acid mucopolysaccharide, arise from the Golgi complex. Some granules are extruded into the uterine lumen where they supply the egg shell with organic matrix. Others migrate towards the supranuclear zone. Here a number of them disintegrate. This is accompanied by the formation of a large membraneless space, which is termed “vacuoloid.” Subsequently the vacuoloid regresses and during regression an extensive rough endoplasmic reticulum with numerous polyribosomes of spiral configuration appears. It is suggested that material in the vacuoloid originating from the disintegrating granules is resynthesized and utilized for the formation of secretory product. The uterine tubular gland cells have irregular, frondlike microvilli. During egg shell deposition, these microvilli form large blebs and are probably related to the elaboration of a watery, calcium-containing fluid.  相似文献

Morphometric, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) investigations have displayed regional differences in the mare oviductal epithelium. The entire mucosa of the oviduct was lined with a pseudostratified epithelium, which consisted of two distinct cell types, ciliated and non-ciliated. Ciliated cells were predominant in the three different segments of the oviduct and their percentage increased from fimbriae to ampulla and significantly decreased in the isthmus. SEM revealed in the infundibulum finger-like mucosal folds, some of them interconnected, in the ampulla numerous and elaborated branched folds of the mucosa, whereas the isthmus displayed a narrow lumen, short and non-branched mucosal folds. In the ampulla and isthmus the majority of non-ciliated cells showed apical blebs provided or not of short microvilli. TEM displayed different ultrastructural features of ciliated and non-ciliated cells along the oviduct. Isthmus ciliated cells presented a more electron-dense cytoplasm than in infundibulum and ampulla cells and its cilia were enclosed in an amorphous matrix. The non-ciliated cells of infundibulum did not contain secretory granules but some apical endocytic vesicles and microvilli coated by a well developed glycocalyx. Non-ciliated cells of ampulla and isthmus contained secretory granules. Apical protrusions of ampulla displayed two types of secretory granules as well as occasional electron-lucent vesicles. Isthmus non-ciliated cells showed either electron-lucent or electron-dense cytoplasm and not all contained apical protrusions. The electron-dense non-ciliated cells displayed microvilli coated with a well developed glycocalyx. Three types of granules were observed in the isthmus non-ciliated cells. The regional differences observed along the epithelium lining the mare oviduct suggest that the epithelium of the each segment is involved in the production of a distinctive microenvironment with a unique biochemical milieu related to its functional role.  相似文献

Four cell types are present in the olfactory epithelium of Neoceratodus forsteri, i.e., olfactory receptor cells, supporting cells, non-sensory ciliated cells, and basal cells. Only microvilli and no cilia were observed on the receptor cells. The neurotubules pass out into these microvilli. Conspicuous arrays of agranular endoplasmic reticulum are present in the nuclear region of the receptor cells. The supporting cells are provided with microvilli. These cells may be secretory. The non-sensory ciliated cells produce secretory granules containing acid mucopolysaccharides. A discontinuous zonula occludens appears to be present.  相似文献

Summary In order to elucidate the problem of which cells are involved in calcium transport and to estimate the role of mitochondria in calcium transport in the avian shell gland, the fine structure and the Ca-ATPase, succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+)-dependent isocitrate dehydrogenase (NAD+-ICDH) activity of the shell gland of egg-laying Japanese quails were examined. The surface epithelial cells, consisting of ciliated cells with cilia and microvilli and non-ciliated cells with microvilli, had many large and electron-dense granules. The tubular-gland cells occupied the proprial layer and lacked secretory granules. When an egg was in the shell gland, the well-developed mitochondria of tubular-gland cells characteristically tended to accumulate in the apical cytoplasm, while they were scattered throughout the cytoplasm when an egg was not in the shell gland. Intense Ca-ATPase activity was found on the microvilli of tubular-gland cells, and moderate activity was found on the lateral-cell surface. In the surface epithelial cells, the basolateral cell surface showed moderate enzymatic activity. Both SDH and NAD+-ICDH activity were found in tubular-gland cells when an egg was in the shell gland. These results strongly suggest that calcium for eggshell calcification is actively transported by the tubular-gland (depending on Ca-ATPase activity) and that the mitochondria of gland cells may play an important role in this process as an energy source.  相似文献

Mesothelial cells of the normal human peritoneum of the anterior abdominal wall are covered with numerous surface microvilli. These cells become partially denuded inside the sacs of direct and indirect inguinal hernias and so lose the protective property the microvillar covering may impart on them. These mesothelial cells of hernial sacs also acquire an extensive surface coat of fibrin-like material, presumably due to the loss of that protective property, which may as a result subject them to adhesions. There is a considerable collagen build-up in the subserosal fibrous tissue of sacs of both direct and indirect inguinal hernias. Such a build-up is at variance with the accepted current surgical concept which suggests a defect in collagen synthesis, rather than a build-up, as the cause of direct hernia.  相似文献

Three basic types of cells are distinguished in the rat vomeronasal epithelium at birth: bipolar neurons, supporting cells, and basal cells. Neurons at this time include both immature and differentiated cells. By the end of the first postnatal week, all neurons show morphological signs of maturity in their cytoplasm, including abundant granular and smooth endoplasmic reticulum, neurotubules, dense lamellar bodies, apical centrioles, and tufts of microvilli. During the third week microvilli are more frequently encountered and appear to be longer and more branched. Supporting cells appear well-developed by the second day after birth. During the first ten days of life, supporting cells lose their centrioles and all of the complex associated with ciliary generation in the apical zone. Basal cells appear to be more numerous in newborns than in older animals. Protrusions projecting into the lumen are frequently observed in the epithelium of newborn animals, both on the dendrites of neurons and on supporting cells. After the third week, such protrusions are only observed in the transitional zone between the sensory and the non-sensory epithelia of the vomeronasal tubes. In this transitional zone, a fourth cell type showing apical protrusions with microvilli differentiates. Cytoplasm in this type resembles that of neighboring ciliated cells but has no cilia or centrioles. These transitional cells are considered to be cells in an intermediate state of differentiation, between that of the differentiated neurons and supporting cells of the sensory epithelium and that of the predominate ciliated cells of the non-sensory epithelium. The results suggest that by the end of the third week the vomeronasal epithelium is morphologically mature.  相似文献
