Aprocta matronensis (Nematoda, Spirurida) has been found in the orbital cavities of carrion crows. Hooded crows and crows from the hybrid crow zone in the studied areas were not infected. The parasite population showed the typical morphology described for this species. This is the first record of A. matronensis in crows in Italy and in Corvus corone corone. Some hypotheses about the distribution of the parasites in crow populations are discussed. 相似文献

We studied the frequency of partial albinism amongst hooded crows in Norway, mostly in a population at Trondheim. A total of 3461 birds were collected from the field. About 5% of fledged young showed albinoid markings on their third right-hand primary; the frequency decreased to 2% among yearling birds and to only 1% among birds that had acquired their adult plumage. No significant difference was found in relation to sex. The partially albinoid birds were typically small-sized, both as regards their bone structure (ulna, tibia, tarsus) and feathers (wing, tail). Their feathers bore more defective markings than those of birds of normal plumage coloration. A study of the plumage of preserved specimens of hooded crows in the collections of Natural History museums in Norway also indicated that a differential mortality takes place in the wild, such albinoid birds disappearing rapidly from the population.
Experimental interchanges of eggs and hatchlings between nests indicated that the occurrence of partial albinism may be related to the feeding conditions during the nestling stage, rather than to any genetical differences. It is not known, however, whether the former was due to starvation, to an unbalanced diet, or to eating poisonous food. 相似文献

The developmental patterns of mean heart rate (MHR) and instantaneous heart rate (IHR) were investigated in embryos and chicks
of altricial Corvuscorone and Corvus macrorhynchos. The MHR of embryos increased linearly with time from 250 beats · min−1 at mid-incubation to 290 beats · min−1 in hatchlings. MHR during the pipping period was maximal, but only marginally higher than in hatchlings. MHR was stable at
about 290–300 beats · min−1 during the 1st week after hatching. Spontaneous heart rate (HR) decelerations and accelerations were found in embryos and
chicks, disturbing the baseline HR with increasing frequency during development. However, the IHR accelerations developed
later and were less frequent than in precocial species. IHR and body temperature decreased during mild cold exposure (23–25 °C)
and IHR accelerations were reduced in nestlings during the 1st week. We suggest that the development of parasympathetic control
of HR in crows occurs at 60% of incubation, similar to precocial embryos, but sympathetic control may be delayed and suppressed
in contrast to precocial embryos.

The growth and morphology of nestling Hooded crows, Corvus corone cornix , were studied at Trondheim, Central Norway, during 1980 and 1981. The sexual size dimorphism of the nestlings developed while they were in the nest, but was less pronounced than that of the juvenile birds. Female young grew relatively faster than the males. The size variation of the morphological characters studied was greater in the males than in the females, during the entire nestling period. The order of development of the different morphological characters seemed to be adapted to the needs of the nestlings during the nestling period. Growth of the bone and bill characters was the highest priority, body weight and feather characters the lowest. In general, the sizes of the different morphological characters were highly intercorrelated, particularly those that developed at the same time during the growth period. In the favourable breeding season of 1981, the nestlings were larger than in the unfavourable season of 1980. The high priority characters of the males increased more in size than did those of the females, and the low priority characters of the females increased more in size than did those of the males. About 75% of the nestlings could be correctly sexed from their external morphological characteristics. The findings support the view that the parental cost of rearing a male offspring is greater than that of a female. 相似文献

RAPD-PCR analysis of genetic variability of carrion crows, hooded crows and their phenotypic hybrids from the zones of overlap of their areals and hybridization of parental forms in Siberia has been carried out. According to RAPD variability the following parameters were estimated for both species and their hybrids: genetical distances (DN), polymorphism (P95), mean expected heterozygosity (H(e)), gene fixation coefficient (Fst) and the portion of interpopulation differentiation (Gst). It was shown that the rate of genetic variability in carrion crows and hooded crows is less than in the hybrids. It turned out that the hybrids were genetically closer to each other (DN = 0.295) than to both parental species (DN = 0.441 and 0.397 with C. corone and C. cornix, correspondingly). The studied individuals of C. cornix show the minimal level of heterozygosity and polymorphism (H(e) = 0.12 and P95 = = 27.8%) in comparison with C. corone and the crows of hybrid zone (H(e) = 0.18 and 0.20; P95 = 42.6% and 50.4%, correspondingly). Right's indexes of inbreeding (Fst = 0.285) and population spliting (Gst = 0.352) indicate low genetic variability in all the analysed birds. Nevertheless UPGMA and NJ dendrogrammes differentiate the individuals from the areals of carrion crows, hooded crows and from hybrid zone to different clusters. Our data correlate with molecular-genetic investigations of Corvidae carried out with other methods, and do not contradict the conception of carrion crows and hooded crows as semispecies in the context of the conception of overspecies. 相似文献

Sixteen raptors and three hooded crows were infected experimentally with Francisella tularensis biovar palaearctica. The birds were infected parenterally or per os. One goshawk, one sparrow hawk and one hooded crow died during the experimental period, and the remaining 16 birds were killed 14-77 days after the first infection. Francisella tularensis was not isolated from any bird. Antibody levels against F. tularensis measured in nine birds varied from 0 to 1:1,280. In one goshawk with a titer of 1:1,280, positive fluorescent antibody reactions against F. tularensis were seen in the liver and spleen. These results are similar to those found by other authors indicating that raptors and corvids are normally resistant to infections with F. tularensis. 相似文献

The social behaviour of carrion crows varies between populations. In northern Spain cooperatively breeding groups form through delayed natal dispersal and/or immigration of individuals (usually males) into the territory. In this population, carrion crows therefore breed as either unassisted pairs, pairs with nondispersing 1-2-year-old helpers (nondispersers), pairs with immigrant helpers or mixed groups (pairs with both immigrants and nondispersers). We used a microsatellite-based genotyping system to determine the parentage of 57 nestlings (19 broods). Polygamous mating was involved in 26% of the broods and reproduction was shared among group members of both sexes in at least three groups. Immigrants of both sexes can therefore gain access to mates by living in a group, while reproduction is unlikely to involve nondispersers. This implies that nondispersers and immigrants gain different sorts of benefits from group living and helping at the nest. Our genetic data confirmed that nondispersers associated with their parents on the natal territory and therefore that delayed natal dispersal leads to family formation in the carrion crow. Polygamous mating was not found in groups without immigrants, suggesting that, in this population, breeders lose parentage in their brood when sociality is extended beyond the limit of the nuclear family.Copyright 2002 The Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour. It is well known that owls achieve better breeding results in good rodent years than in poor ones. This study found that the difference in breeding success between good versus poor years was apparent mainly in the degree of non-breeding and in clutch size. Desertion of eggs or young was not correlated with prey abundance; possibly only the 'fitter' pairs breed in poor rodent years. 相似文献

Distribution of mitochondrial DNA cytochrome b gene haplotypes in two crow species was examined by means of sequencing of the 336-bp gene fragment. The topology of the NJ and UPGMA trees showed that the carrion crow range was split into two parts due to the presence of significantly diverged ancestral lineage localized in the southeastern part of the range. The carrion crow populations, inhabiting a territory ranging from France to northern Sakhalin, along with interspersed hooded crow populations and hybrid Siberian populations, shared a common haplotype. The border between two carrion crow lineages revealed is located in central Sakhalin. The subdivision of two weakly differentiated lineages within the jungle crown range, also observed within this territory, coincided with the subspecies division of this species. The estimated genetic distances indicate the isolation of the subgenus Coloeus. These data also suggest the convergent similarity between the chough Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax and the Corvus genus, as well as the conspecificity of Corvus corone corone and C. c. cornix. 相似文献

Brecding densities, nest spacing, breeding habitat, productivity and diet are compared for Hobbies Falco subbuteo in the New Forest (heathland and largely coniferous woodland), river valley farmland and largely cultivated chalk downland. Regular spacing of nests was characteristic of the three areas. The New Forest had the highest density and lowest mean nearest neighbour distance for nests. Nest areas tended to be traditional. A high proportion of clutches were laid in disused nests of Carrion Crows Corvus corone which favoured the crowns of Scots pine Pinus sylvestris. Except on downland, the availability of such sites is unlikely to provide a constraint on Hobby distribution. In the New Forest, woodland clearings and valley mires were a feature of nest territories. There was no evidence of a habitat-related difference in fledging success.
Division of labour between sexes is marked. The male is responsible for provisioning the female throughout most of the breeding season as well as the young. During the incubation period many woodland passerines were taken but when feeding nestlings Hobbies tended to specialize on Swallows Hirundo rustica , House Martins Delichon urbica and, where they had access to more urban areas, Swifts Apus apus. By breeding relatively late, Hobbies take advantage of the availability of the juveniles of such prey on which to feed their young. Large insects supplemented the diet before egg-laying and when the Hedged young were learning to hunt. 相似文献

The all black carrion crow ( Corvus corone corone ) and the grey and black hooded crow ( Corvus corone cornix ) meet in a narrow hybrid zone across Europe. To evaluate the degree of genetic differentiation over the hybrid zone, we genotyped crows from the centre and edges of the zone, and from allopatric populations in northern (Scotland–Denmark–Sweden) and southern Europe (western–central northern Italy), at 18 microsatellites and at a plumage candidate gene, the MC1R gene. Allopatric and edge populations were significantly differentiated on microsatellites, and populations were isolated by distance over the hybrid zone in Italy. Single-locus analyses showed that one locus, CmeH9, differentiated populations on different sides of the zone at the same time as showing only weak separation of populations on the same side of the zone. Within the hybrid zone there was no differentiation of phenotypes at CmeH9 or at the set of microsatellites, no excess of heterozygotes among hybrids and low levels of linkage disequilibrium between markers. We did not detect any association between phenotypes and nucleotide variation at MC1R , and the two most common haplotypes occurred in very similar frequencies in carrion and hooded crows. That we found a similar degree of genetic differentiation between allopatric and edge populations irrespectively of their location in relation to the hybrid zone, no differentiation between phenotypes within the hybrid zone, and neither heterozygote excess nor consistent linkage disequilibrium in the hybrid zone, is striking considering that carrion and hooded crows are phenotypically distinct and sometimes recognised as separate species. 相似文献

An enquiry into the recent breeding status of some of the smaller birds of prey and crows in Britain
Ian Prestt 《Bird Study》2013,60(3):196-221
Eight nestling Sparrowhawks in Northamptonshire were marked with radiotransmitters to determine fledging and dispersal dates and the distances and directions travelled away from the nest. One male left the nest at 26 days old and dispersed 28 days later. Females fledged at 28–30 days old and dispersed 25–27 days later. The birds moved in any direction away from their birthplace with a maximum distance ranging 4–22 km. Although born in coniferous forest, the birds spent most time in scrubland, deciduous woodland and farmland. 相似文献

Kin-based societies, where families represent the basic social unit, occur in a relatively small number of vertebrate species. In the majority of avian kin societies, families form when offspring prolong their association with the parents on the natal territory. Therefore, the key to understanding the evolution of families in birds is to understand natal philopatry (i.e. the tendency to remain on the natal territory). It has been shown that, within populations, the strength of the association between parents and offspring (i.e. family stability) increases when offspring dispersal is constrained by external environmental factors, but it is unclear whether and how family wealth influences juvenile dispersal decisions. Here, we show that young carrion crows (Corvus corone corone) from territories that were food-supplemented year-round were more philopatric and more likely to help at their family's nest than the unfed ones. The results suggest that offspring philopatry and helping behaviour are influenced by the quality of 'home' and that the availability of food resources positively affects the cohesion of the family. 相似文献
