Golden langurs (Trachypithecus geei) are an endangered primate species in Bhutan. We discuss their evolution in terms of phylogeny, ecology, and biogeography. We test the hypothesis that rivers and mountains in Bhutan isolated a population of capped langurs (Trachypithecus pileatus) that later speciated into the morphologically distinct T. geei. Trachypithecus, the genus to which both capped and golden langurs belong, spread north from a paleorefuge in south China, and Semnopithecus (gray langurs) spread east and northward from a refuge in south India. We show that the 2 genera both arrived in Bhutan and were separated from each other by the Sunkosh River and Black Mountains. Likewise, a population of capped langurs isolated from parental populations by rivers speciated into the distinct golden langurs. We conducted field surveys covering the entire range of langurs in Bhutan. The Sunkosh River and Black Mountain range in west Bhutan isolate gray langurs and golden langurs from each other. In the east, the Manas River system (Manas-Mangde) served as a barrier between golden and capped langurs. However, it is an imperfect barrier and a contact zone between the 2 species occurred on the banks of the Mangde River. Second, we reconstructed the evolutionary history of the langurs of Bhutan via molecular phylogenetic tools. We sequenced the cytochrome b region (cyt b) of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) to model a phylogeny. It revealed the distinct evolutionary paths of the golden, capped, and gray langurs. As predicted, golden and capped langurs are closely related to each other and to other species in Trachypithecus from Southeast Asia. The gray langur of Bhutan grouped into a distinct clade with conspecifics in Semnopithecus from India and Nepal. The south Indian clade of gray langurs is more ancient, with the Bhutan and Nepal gray langurs having diverged later, which fits with the glacial models of ice sheet retreats and colonization of South Asia by gray langurs from south India north toward the Himalayas. Likewise, the golden and capped langur clade are the most derived and divergent from the older groups of Trachypithecus in Southeast Asia, which also fits with paleorefuge models of recolonization by Trachypithecus into the rest of Southeast Asia and north toward the Himalayas from paleorefuges in Southeast Asia. As predicted, golden and capped langurs are closely related to each other and gray langurs are only distantly related to them. The divergence between capped and golden langurs is more recent, while the split between Trachypithecus and Semnopithecus is more ancient and took place before the Pliocene.  相似文献

Numerous morphology-based classification schemes have been proposed for langurs and leaf monkeys of South Asia but there is very little agreement between them. An incorrect classification scheme when used as a basis for biogeographic studies can support erroneous hypotheses. Further, lack of taxonomic resolution will also confound conservation efforts, given that conservation biologists use traditional morphology-based-classification schemes to prioritize species for conservation. Here, I have revisited recent molecular phylogenetic studies done on langurs and leaf monkeys of South Asia. Results from these studies are in turn used to derive a rational and scientific basis for prioritizing species for conservation. Molecular data support the classification of langurs of the Indian subcontinent—Hanuman, Nilgiri and purple-faced langurs—in the genus Semnopithecus, whereas Phayre’s leaf monkey along with other Southeast Asian leaf monkeys form another distinct clade (Trachypithecus). The phylogenetic position of capped and golden langurs remains unresolved. Molecular data suggest that they are closely related to each other but this group might have evolved through past hybridization between Semnopithecus and Trachypithecus. Additionally, genetic data also support the splitting of the so-called Hanuman langurs into at least three species. The scores for taxonomic uniqueness of langurs and leaf monkeys of South Asia were revised using this molecular phylogeny-based classification. According to the revised scores, Phayres leaf monkey and golden langur are priority species for conservation followed by capped and Nilgiri langurs.  相似文献

We studied the diet and food choice of 1 group of Fran?ois’ langurs (Trachypithecus francoisi) from August 2003 to July 2004 in the Nonggang Nature Reserve, Guangxi province, China. The langurs consumed 90 plant species, including 14 unidentified species. Leaves constituted 52.8% of the diet (38.9% young leaves and 13.9% mature leaves). Fruits and seeds accounted for 17.2% and 14.2%, respectively. Flowers and other items—including petioles, stems, roots, and bark—contributed to 7.5% and 7.4% of the diet, respectively. The langur diet varied according to season. They fed on more young leaves from April to September. Consumption of seeds, petioles, and stems increased between October and March, when young leaves were scarce. The diet shift corresponded to higher dietary diversity during the young leaf-lean period. Though the langurs fed on many plant species, 10 species accounted for 62.2% of the diet, only 2 of which were among the 10 most common tree species in vegetation quadrants, and the percentage of feeding records on a plant species and the percentage of individuals of the species in vegetation quadrants does not correlate significantly. Fran?ois’ langurs fed selectively, and they did not base their diet simply on the abundance of plant species in the habitat.  相似文献

We observed a group of capped langurs for 12 mo in the Pakhui Wildlife Sanctuary, Arunachal Pradesh, India. We recorded the time of feeding on different food plant species, food categories, and the feeding heights of monkeys in trees. Capped langurs spent 68% of their feeding time on leaves, 16% on flowers, and 16% on fruits. Feeding on leaves was consistently high (p < 0.01) during the year, with the highest feeding in May (85%) and the lowest in January (47%). The seasonal difference in feeding on leaves is significant (p < 0.05): it was higher in summer and during monsoon. The feeding time on flowers was maximal (35%) in March and that on fruits and seeds was minimal (38%) in January. Langurs ate 52 plant species throughout the year. The largest number of plants (6) were species of Moraceae, and langurs spent more feeding time (20%) on them alone. The number of plants eaten per month varied significantly (p < 0.05). Langurs ate Gmelina arborea, Albizzia lucida, Ficus glomereta, and Makania micrantha throughout the year. They spent 44% of their feeding time in terminal canopies and their average feeding height was 30–35 m. This is the first study to examine the feeding ecology of capped langurs and provides baseline data for the species.  相似文献

During a 10-year long term study, 6 eye-witnessed and 1 pressumed cases of abortions occurred in 3 one-male bisexual troops of free ranging langurs (Presbytis entellus) near Jodhpur, Rajasthan, India. The age of the unborns varied from 35 to about 200 days. The subsequent birth interval ranged between 7.1–21.1 months. 2 miscarriages occurred during stable periods of residency of a single male. 5 cases occurred prior to or after infanticide in connection with male changes. In one case a female was attacked by the new male before she aborted. In one case a female presumably aborted after attacks on her semiweaned infant. Most of the reproductive losses hence seem to be related to psychical and physical stress exerted by new males on pregnant females. As part of their reproductive strategy, males reduce their waiting time to insemination in this way. Abortions may likewise represent an adaptive reproductive strategy of females, who prefer to abort instead of investing in a foetus which is likely to be killed after birth.  相似文献

Understanding the reproductive parameters of endangered primate species is vital for evaluating the status of populations and developing adequate conservation measures. This study provides the first detailed analysis of the reproductive parameters of wild white‐headed langurs (Trachypithecus leucocephalus), based on demographic data collected over an 8‐year period in the Nongguan Karst Hills in Chongzuo County, Guangxi, China. From 1998 to 2002, a total of 133 live births were recorded in the population based on systematic censuses. Births occurred throughout the year, but the temporal pattern was highly correlated with seasonal variation in temperature and rainfall, with the birth peak coinciding with the dry and cold months of November–March. The average birthrate was 0.47±0.13 births per female per year and mortality for infants younger than 20 months was 15.8%. From 1998 to 2006, 14 females gave birth to 41 infants in four focal groups. The average age at first birth for female langurs was 5–6 years (n=5) and the interbirth interval (IBI) was 23.2±5.2 months (median=24.5 months, n=27). Infants are weaned at 19–21 months of age. The IBI for females with infant loss before weaning was significantly shorter than those for females whose infants survived. It appears that birth seasonality in the white‐headed langurs is influenced by seasonal changes in food availability. The timing of conceptions was found to coincide with peak food availability. The reproductive parameters for white‐headed langurs reported here are quite similar to those reported for other colobine species. One major difference is our observation of lower infant mortality in Trachypithecus. Am. J. Primatol. 71:558–566, 2009. © 2009 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Courtship and spawning behavior is described for the Leather Bass, Dermatolepis dermatolepis, from observations made from a manned submersible at Cocos Island, Costa Rica on 19 days between November 2006 and February 2007. Spawning occurred in the evening (16:00–18:30 h) in subgroups of 10–32 individuals that formed within aggregations of 50–70 individuals. The mating sequence was characterized by subgroup formation and crowding behavior followed by a brief vertical spawning rush, gamete release, and the rapid separation of participants. The aggregation was present on all dives, and spawning was not restricted to specific lunar phases.  相似文献

We assessed the distribution and conservation status of bonnet macaques (Macaca radiata), rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) and Hanuman langurs (Semnopithecus entellus) in the state of Karnataka, India. Karnataka is situated in southwest India with an area of 191,791 km2. A total of 9697 km of vehicular survey was made from November 2001 to July 2004. We also visited 107 temples/tourist spots to determine the presence of primates. Bonnet macaques and Hanuman langurs were widely distributed, whereas rhesus macaques were not found in the state. However, bonnet macaques were absent in a few districts in the northern plains and Hanuman langurs were absent in some districts of the southern plains. A total of 205 groups of bonnet macaques and 139 groups of Hanuman langurs were sighted. The relative encounter rate of both species differed across biogeographic zones. Bonnet macaques were largely encountered in the Western Ghats and the Southern Plateau whereas Hanuman langurs were abundant in the Western Ghats and Northern Plains. We found that bonnet macaques have been eliminated from about 48% temples/tourist spots where they occurred in the recent past. The Hanuman langur population of Dharwar–Haliyal Road was assessed during April 2003, and we found that the present population size was about 38% of a previous survey in 1961. Habitat change, hunting/trapping and translocation were the major factors causing a decline in the langur population.  相似文献

Information on positional behavior can help elucidate relationships between a species’ morphology, behavior, and environment. Delacour’s langurs (Trachypithecus delacouri) are similar to other colobines in body mass and intermembral index, yet inhabit a limestone karst environment. From August 2007 to July 2008, we collected 372 h of positional behavior and substrate use data from 8 groups of Trachypithecus delacouri in Van Long Nature Reserve, Vietnam to address questions about how the distinct —and potentially dangerous— features of karst influence colobine positional behavior. Results show that Trachypithecus delacouri is predominantly quadrupedal (66%). However, they exhibit differences that set them apart from many other colobines. Nearly 80% of locomotor and postural behaviors were performed on rocks. Leaping was remarkably infrequent, representing only 6% of overall locomotion. They leapt 3 times more frequently on trees (13%) than on rocks (4%) and more frequently used trees as a landing substrate than rocks (38% vs. 23%), both significant differences. We argue that rock (and cliff) travel is altogether different from terrestrial and arboreal travel and propose using the term petrous to indicate the substrate and incorporate the implications of its precise sharpness and verticality that lead to the complexities and risk of locomotion on rock surfaces. Trachypithecus delacouri does not show specific adaptations for limestone karst. Instead they appear to be a behaviorally flexible species and, owing to the generalized locomotor capabilities that characterize cercopithecids, capable of locomoting through and living in the limestone rock environment to which they have relatively recently been restricted.  相似文献

This paper presents 10 years of reproductive data on birth interval length and 5 years of data on reproductive behavior postpartum from a captive colony of gray langur monkeys (Presbytis entellus)housed in Berkeley, California. Birth intervals of females following different pregnancy and nursing schedules are compared. Females whose infants survive to the age of 9 months have a median birth interval of 15.4 months. The experimental separation of mothers from infants for a period of 2 weeks, 6 to 9 months postpartum, had no significant effect on the median birth interval length. Females experiencing a pregnancy failure or the loss of a neonate had median birth intervals of 9.6 and 10.7 months, respectively. These intervals were significantly shorter than the birth intervals of females whose infants survived to 9 months, showing that the presence of a nursing infant delays the female’s time to next conception by approximately 5 to 6 months. Females experienced a median of three estrous periods (two estrous cycles) before conceiving postpartum, regardless of pregnancy outcome or length of infant survival, and females rarely conceived during their first estrous period postpartum. Weaning did not occur until after the mother’s next conception. These data indicate that, in populations of langurs characterized by average birth intervals of 15 to 16 months, the loss of an infant after the age of 5 to 6 months will not accelerate a female’s ability to conceive or shorten the birth interval length. The available data on birth spacing from populations of free-ranging langurs are reviewed. It could not be demonstrated that non-Himalayan populations are characterized by birth intervals which are as long as 20 to 24 months. Rather, it is suggested that female langurs inhabiting seasonally arid sites, such as Jodhpur, Abu, and Dharwar, may be capable of producing infants on the average of every 15 to 16 months. Flexibility in the timing of births and the lack of well-defined birth seasons at these sites may be explained by this species’ dietary and digestive adaptations. Additionally, data on birth spacing and the age of missing infants from the above field sites, where it has been suggested that infanticide following changes in male leadership occurs habitually, do not lend support to the sexual selection hypothesis of infanticide as proposed by S. Hrdy (1974, 1977).  相似文献

We report for the first time the reproductive behaviors of Hainan gibbons (Nomascus hainanus), based on 29 mo of field observations. Receptive females initiated courtship displays. Copulatory patterns involved the male mounting dorsoventrally from above and behind. Multiple intromissions with thrusting were brief, lasting <10 s per copulation. We observed multiple copulations ≤4 times/d, but could not confirm multiple ejaculations. We also observed postconception proceptivity and copulations in sexually active females. We estimated the gestation period to be 136–173 d. Infants became independent at 1.5 yr, and the natal group could drive out maturing offspring at ca. 5.5 yr. The interbirth interval is ca. 24 mo. Our limited data also suggest that mating activities peak in the rainy season. The Hainan gibbons are polygynous, with a 1 male-2 females mating system. We hypothesize that suboptimal habitat quality and limited forest area may contribute to the current mating structure, but more work needs to be done over a longer period to understand better the sociosexual behaviors of this critically endangered species.  相似文献

Information on mating season is of paramount importance for our understanding of reproductive behavior, yet little is currently known about the breeding season of Xenarhtra as a whole and sloths in particular. A pair of maned sloths was observed copulating in September 2005 in the Atlantic Forest region of south-eastern Brazil. Our studies on mating of the manned sloth as well of other hitherto unpublished records of newborn sloths seen in the wild, together with a review of previous information, indicate that B. torquatus is a seasonal breeder. Infants are born predominantly at the end of the wet season and beginning of the dry season (February–April), and copulation concentrates in the late dry and early wet seasons (August–October). This strategy allows for the energy-demanding gestation and lactation to take place during the less stressful period of the year.  相似文献

The reproductive biology of the fanray, Platyrhina sinensis, was examined in Ariake Bay, Japan, from May 2002 until December 2006. Females reached sexual maturity at a larger size than males [total length (TL) at 50% sexual maturity: male, 393 mm; female, 421 mm]. The present data support a distinct annual reproductive cycle for P. sinensis. The gonadosomatic index (GSI) for mature males showed a clear seasonal trend, declining from August to November. Histological observations showed that mature sperm in the testes occurred from August to November when monthly GSI declined. Concomitantly, pre-ovulatory ova were observed in females collected from August to November. These data indicate that mating, ovulation and fertilization occurred from August to November. Near-term embryos, neonates and recent post-partum females also occurred from August to November. Additionally, all post-partum females possessed large pre-ovulatory ova. Parturition occurred from August to November followed immediately by mating, ovulation and fertilization. Mature females become pregnant every year, and the gestation period is almost 1 year. Fertilized uterine eggs without macroscopic embryonic development were present throughout the annual reproductive cycle, indicating that P. sinensis utilizes embryonic diapause as its reproductive strategy. Both reproductive tracts of females were functional, and fecundity ranged from 1 to 12 with a mean of 6.0, increasing with TL.  相似文献

Non-reproductive copulation, which takes place outside of the mating season and does not result in conception and birth, was studied in a free-ranging group of Tibetan monkeys (Macaca thibetana) at Mt. Huangshan, China, in the birth seasons of 1992 and 1997. We employed all occurrence and focal animal samplings to record sexual and related behaviors and affiliation interactions, respectively. Compared with sexual behavior in mating season, non-reproductive copulation occurred at a lower frequency, with less frequent ejaculation, less harassment, shorter mount duration, and an absence of pause with vocalization. It often took place in a situation in which non-lactating females were involved in social conflict or approached males for mating. Neither pregnant nor lactating females were observed to mate in the birth seasons. Copulation during the birth season did not increase a sexually receptive female’s delivery the next year, nor was it associated with increased proximity, grooming, or agonistic aid for the mating pair. However, copulated pairs spent more time co-feeding, presumably reflecting an increased tolerance on the part of the male. Adolescent males, who rarely copulated in the mating season, engaged in mating activity in birth seasons as well. Therefore, though birth-season copulation had no reproductive functions, it may have fulfilled social functions for females, such as post-aggression appeasing by males or gaining access to resources. This also offered good opportunities for adolescent males and females to develop their sexual skills for later competition.  相似文献

Common problems faced in farming of the red algal genus Kappaphycus/Eucheuma are “ice-ice disease” and the occurrence of epiphytes. Considerable work has been documented on “ice-ice disease” and it's mode of infection but limited information is available on the emergence of epiphytes. The present study addresses the phenomenon of epiphyte infection, its prevalence in commercially cultivated red alga, Kappaphycus alvarezii, and their variability associated with seasonality. Cultured seaweed became susceptible to epiphytes in the dry seasons (1) between March – June and (2) September – November. Findings revealed Neosiphonia savatieri (Hariot) M. S. Kim et I. K. Lee, as the dominant infecting epiphyte, representing up to 80–85% of the epiphyte present during peak seasons. Besides N. savatieri, Neosiphonia apiculata, Ceramium sp., Acanthophora sp. and Centroceras sp. were observed in smaller quantities. SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) micrographs revealed the epiphyte's attachment to the host. Further histological study showed the extent of penetration of epiphytes into the host's cortex tissues and condition of its surrounding tissues. The outbreak of epiphytic filamentous red algae also correlated with drastic changes in seawater temperature and salinity during March– June and September – November.  相似文献

I examined seasonal, sex, and interspecific differences in activity time budgest and diets of patas (Erythrocebus patas) and sympatric tantalus monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops tantalus) on the basis of 5-day data sets collected in three and two different seasons, respectively, by the method of focal animal sampling. The seasons included species-specific mating and birth seasons. As compared with not only the birth season but also conspecific females, both patas resident male and tantalus male spent less time feeding and more time resting, day and night, in their respective mating seasons. Given that day-resting time includes time for vigilance for non-resident males and receptive females, this may reflect that males should minimize time spent feeding to allow maximum participation in other fitness-increasing activities such as mating-relating activities asSchoener (1971) predicted. In both species, the males consumed fruits containing less protein but more calories and showed a high feeding rate to compensate for the shorter time spent feeding in the mating season. In contrast, females consumed protein-rich food types (i.e. animals, protein-rich seeds, leaves, and flowers) in the birth season to meet the high demand for protein due to pregnancy and lactation. Given that the season for males was considered to be not a calendar but a reproductive “season” (i.e. mating or birth season), both sexes of patas spent more time moving and less time day- and night-resting than did the tantalus counterparts irrespective of the “season”. Patas subsisted on fruits, gums, and supplementarily lipid-rich seeds as an energy source and animal matters and protein-rich seeds as a protein source. In contrast, tantalus subsisted on fruits and lipid-rich seeds as energy and flowers and leaves as protein.  相似文献

We studied the status and distribution of the diurnal primates in the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park (PNKB NP) from April to August 2007. In the past, researchers reported 9 primate species and subspecies for the karst forests of PNKB NP, which constitutes the most important protected area for the endangered Hatinh langur (Trachypithecus hatinhensis) in Vietnam. All 9 primate taxa are threatened due to hunting pressure and habitat loss. We applied line transect sampling in 4 areas. During a total of 117 transect inspections along 12 different transect routes, we confirmed 5 primate taxa and the analysis of population densities resulted in 2143 (±467) Hatinh langurs, 1316 (±871) red-shanked douc langurs (Pygathrix nemaeus), 930 (±489) stump-tailed macaques (Macaca arctoides), 986 (±883) eastern Assamese macaques (M. a. assamensis), and 18 (±18) southern white-cheeked crested gibbons (Nomascus siki) in the whole PNKB NP, which covers an area of ca. 85,000 ha. We could not detect the 2 nocturnal lorises, Bengal slow lorises (Nycticebus bengalensis) and pygmy slow lorises (N. pygmaeus), as well as rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) and northern pig-tail macaques (M. leonina). The distribution of the primates predominantly depended on human impact. We could not recognize a correlation between habitat constitution and abundance of primates. The population density estimates showed a much higher density of the Hatinh langur than previously assumed. Thus the importance of the PNKB NP for the conservation of this endangered langur increased significantly.  相似文献

Ranging behavior is an important aspect of animal behavior that researchers use to investigate ecological influences on individual behavior. We studied the influence of diet, water resources, and sleeping sites on the ranging behavior of 2 groups of white-headed langurs (Trachypithecus leucocephalus) in a limestone habitat at Fusui Nature Reserve, China, between August 2007 and July 2008. During the study period, the total home range sizes for the 2 focal groups were 23.8 ha and 33.8 ha, the mean daily path lengths were 491 m and 512 m, and leaves accounted for 83.4% and 91.0% of the diet, which are well within the range of variation reported for other Trachypithecus. One focal group traveled significantly longer distances in the rainy season months than in the dry season months. This variation may be related to the seasonal difference in food availability and diet. The langurs did not use their home ranges uniformly, and 50% of their activities occurred within 11% (group 1) and 20% (group 2) of their home ranges. The most heavily used quadrats in the home ranges were located near the most frequently used sleeping sites. Moreover, the core areas (>70% of location records) of both groups’ home ranges included ≥1 permanent water pool. The langurs ventured to these pools for drinking when surface water became scarce in the dry season. These results suggest that sleeping sites and water scarcity may be significant influences on the ranging behavior of white-headed langurs in limestone habitat.  相似文献

A new species of Hirsutella, H. proturicola, isolated from a subterranean proturan (Baculentulus densus; Protura, Hexapoda), is described and illustrated. Hirsutella proturicola is characterized by producing monoblastic phialides of 24–51.5 × 2.5–5 μm with a slightly roughened neck, fusiform and curved conidia of 9–18 × 2.5–4 μm that have a truncate base and a papillate projection often capped with sheath-like mucilage, and pluricellular, globose to subglobose chlamydospores of 21–48 × 21–41.5 μm. This species is morphologically and phylogenetically close to H. rostrata, an acaropathogenic species, but can be distinguished from the size of the phialides and the size and shape of the conidia.  相似文献
