The phages of halophilic vibrios and their use]   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The range of the lytic activity of 46 phages of parahemolytic vibrios isolated from lysogenic strains, sea water samples, crabs and mussels has been studied. The phages are represented by virions belonging to morphological groups II, IV, V according to the phage classification currently used in Russia and to different serological groups. No relationship between the sensitivity of vibrio strains to the phages under study and the specificity of serotypes O and K has been established. The preparation of diagnostic phage [see text] suitable for the identification of 82% of strains of parahemolytic vibrios has been proposed.  相似文献

Out of 20 Pseudomonas phages, 17 were most suitable for typing of Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains isolated from different sources of human infections. These phages have been classified into three taxons based on coefficient of correlation of their lytic activity. Out of these strains only one appeared nontypeable. 240 distinquished phagotypes were classified into three groups and seven subgroups. This schema of classification was used in the epidemiological investigations of the Pseudomonas strains in relation to the category of infection and the place of isolation. Some statisticaly significant differences were detected. Various possibilities of applications of typing set of Pseudomonas phages are discussed.  相似文献

Lactobacilli are members of the bacterial flora of lactic starter cultures used to generate lactic acid fermentation in a number of animal or plant products used as human or animals foods. They can be affected by phage outbreaks, which can result in faulty and depreciated products. Two groups of phages specific of Lactobacillus casei have been thoroughly studied. 1. The first group is represented by phage PL-1. This phage behaves as lytic in its usual host L. casei ATCC 27092, but can lysogenize another strain, L. casei ATCC 334. Bacterial receptors of this phage are located in a cell-wall polysaccharide and rhamnose is the main component of the receptors. Ca2+ and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) are indispensable to ensure the injection of the phage DNA into the bacterial cell. The phage DNA is double-stranded, mostly linear, but with cohesive ends which enables it to be circularized. The vegetative growth of PL-1 proceeds according to the classical mode. Cell lysis is produced by an N-acetyl-muramidase at the end of vegetative growth. 2. The second group is represented by the temperate phage phi FSW of L. casei ATCC27139. It has been shown how virulent phages originate from this temperate phage in Japanese dairy plants. The lysogenic state of phi FSW can be altered either by point mutations or by the insertion of a mobile genetic element called ISL 1, which comes from the bacterial chromosome. This is the first transposable element that has been described in lactobacilli. Lysogeny appears to be widespread among lactobacilli since one study showed that 27% of 148 strains studied, representing 15 species, produced phage particles after induction by mitomycin C. Similarly, 23 out of 30 strains of Lactobacillus salivarius are lysogenic and produce, after induction by mitomycin C, temperate phages, killer particles, or defective phages. Temperate phages have also been found in 10 out of 105 strains of Lactobacillus bulgaricus or Lactobacillus lactis after induction by mitomycin C. Phages so far studied of the latter 2 and closely related lactobacilli, either temperate or isolated as lytic, may be divided into 4 unrelated groups called a, b, c and d. Most of these phages are found in group a and an unquestionable relationship has already been shown between lytic phages and temperate phages that belong to this group. Lytic phage LL-H of L. lactis LL 23, isolated in Finland, is one of the most representative of those of group a and has been extensively studied on the molecular level.  相似文献

Possible causes limiting the multiplication of Bordetella phages or inducing their restriction, such as the influence of lysogenic immunity and the restriction-modification (R-M) system or the incompatibility of the receptor apparatus, have been studied. The limitation of the multiplication of phages by some B. bronchiseptica and B. pertussis strains has been shown to be due to the presence of the R-M system and lysogenic immunity. In five B. bronchiseptica strains and two B. pertussis strains site-specific endonucleases (restrictases) with Hind III specificity have been detected. One B. bronchiseptica strain without the R-M system has been detected. B. bronchiseptica strains producing site-specific endonucleases are practically nonpathogenic for humans, grow in common culture media and selectively produce only one restrictase, type Hind III, which guarantees from the admixture of other specific endonucleases. The B. parapertussis strains under study (altogether 100 strains) have not been found to limit the multiplication of Bordetella test phages. The absence of site-specific endonucleases has also been confirmed biochemically. These strains are recommended as indicator strains for the multiplication of Bordetella phages.  相似文献

The sensitivity of a number of P. aeruginosa clinical strains to virulent bacteriophages has been studied. Phage-resistant strains have been found to constitute a considerable proportion among the tested P. aeruginosa strains. The strains under study fall into 19 groups differing in their sensitivity to the bacteriophages used in this investigation. The strains belonging to some groups are phenotypically identical to experimentally obtained P. aeruginosa phage-resistant mutants PAO. The use of bacteriophage mutants has made it possible to demonstrate that in most cases the resistance of P. aeruginosa natural strains to type phi k phages is due to disturbances in their adsorption, whereas their resistance to type phi m and phi mn phages is, seemingly, not linked with disturbances in their capacity for adsorption on the cell membranes of the bacteria.  相似文献

About half of pneumococci recovered from pediatric patients and one-third of isolates from adult patients yielded bacteriophages active against one or more of four noncapsulated indicator strains of pneumococcus. Strains of capsular types most frequently causing pediatric infections were associated with lysogeny. Classical restriction-modification phenomena have been demonstrated in vivo with some of the temperate phages, and correlation of restriction with the presence of one or the other of the two known pneumococcal restriction endonucleases has been established. The temperate phages differ serologically and in several other characteristics from virulent pneumococcal phages previously described. All pneumococcal phages so far studied can be classified into a minimum of three serological groups.  相似文献

The morphology of 75 bacteriophage strains isolated from water samples collected in the North Sea or in the northern Atlantic was studied by electron microscopy. Only tailed phages were observed (bradley groups A, B, and C). According to structural similarities, the strains are ascribed to 12 groups, 5 of which comprise types of marine phages not reported before. Four of these 5 groups include phage types that have not been detected from any other source. Among the phages isolated from northern Atlantic water a high incidence was observed of strains the particles of which have long appendages. Certain types of the northern Atlantic phages investigated were derived only from samples collected either east or west of the Azores. This finding agrees with former observations pointing to the existence of different populations of closely related bacteria east and west, respectively, of the northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge.  相似文献

Aims: Salmonella is a worldwide foodborne pathogen causing acute enteric infections in humans. In the recent years, the use of bacteriophages has been suggested as a possible tool to combat this zoonotic pathogen in poultry farms. This work aims to isolate and perform comparative studies of a group of phages active against a collection of specific Salmonella Enteritidis strains from Portugal and England. Also, suitable phage candidates for therapy of poultry will be selected. Methods and Results: The Salm. Enteritidis strains studied were shown to have a significantly high occurrence of defective (cryptic) prophages; however, no live phages were found in the strains. Bacteriophages isolated from different environments lysed all except one of the tested Salm. Enteritidis strains. The bacteriophages studied were divided into different groups according to their genetic homology, RFLP profiles and phenotypic features, and most of them showed no DNA homology with the bacterial hosts. The bacteriophage lytic efficacy proved to be highly dependent on the propagation host strain. Conclusions: Despite the evidences shown in this work that the Salm. Enteritidis strains used did not produce viable phages, we have confirmed that some phages, when grown on particular hosts, behaved as complexes of phages. This is most likely because of the presence of inactive phage‐related genomes (or their parts) in the bacterial strains which are capable of being reactivated or which can recombine with lytic phages. Furthermore, changes of the bacterial hosts used for maintenance of phages must be avoided as these can drastically modify the parameters of the phage preparations, including host range and lytic activity. Significance and Impact of the Study: This work shows that the optimal host and growth conditions must be carefully studied and selected for the production of each bacteriophage candidate for animal therapy.  相似文献

Bacteriophages of methanotrophic bacteria have been found in 16 out of 88 studied samples (underground waters, pond water, soil, gas and oil installation waters, fermentor cultural fluids, bacterial paste, and rumen of cattle) taken in different geographic zones of the Soviet Union. Altogether, 23 phage strains were isolated: 10 strains that specifically lysed only Methylosinus sporium strains, 2 strains that each lysed 1 of 5 Methylosinus trichosporium strains studied, and 11 strains that lysed Flavobacterium gasotypicum and, at the same time, 1 M. sporium strain. By fine structure, the phages were divided into two types (with very short or long noncontractile tails); by host range and serological properties, they fell into three types. One-step growth characteristics of the phages differed only slightly; the latent period varied from 6 to 8 h, the rise period varied from 4 to 6 h, and the average burst size was 100. All phages had guanine- and cytosine-rich double-stranded deoxyribonucleic acid consisting of common nitrogen bases. The molecular mass of the deoxyribonucleic acid as determined by restriction endonuclease analysis was 29.4 X 10(6) for M. sporium phages and 44 X 10(6) for F. gasotypicum phages. By all of the above-mentioned properties, all phages within each of the groups were completely identical to one another, but differed from phages of other groups. Bacteriophages lysing M. sporium and M. trichosporium GB2 were identical to phages M1 and M4, respectively, which were isolated earlier in the German Democratic Republic on the same methanotrophic species.  相似文献

Summary and conclusions Phages were isolated which were adsorbed bySalmonella strains of groups B and D. These phages were adaptable to strains of species from these groups. The behaviour of some adaptations of these phages on strains ofS. paratyphi B has been described. A typing scheme forS. typhimurium has been established. Electron microscope studies have been made of a number of phages of lactic streptococci, seven of which were phages of Streptococcus lactis C10. Two of the phages are thought to be identical; five have been classified by the method of Tikhonenko as belonging to group IV (phages with noncontractile tails) with type III tail plates; one belongs to group V (phages with tails possessing a contractile sheath). Both prolate polyhedral heads and isometric polyhedral heads are represented among the group IV phages. The phage drc3 of S. diacetilactis DRC3 has been shown to have similar structure to the group IV phages of S. lactis C10 with prolate polyhedral heads. The phages ml1, hp, c11, and z8 of the S. cremoris strains ML1, HP, C11, and Z8, respectively, were shown to belong to the group IV phages with type III tail plates by the method of Tikhonenko. All had octahedral heads and tended to be larger than most of the other phages studied.  相似文献

Temperate coliphages were recovered from sewage, mammalian feces, and lysogenic strains of Escherichia coli. A total of 32 phages of independent origin were divided into six groups by applying the criteria of host range, antigenic homology, and the ultraviolet inducibility of the prophage. The demonstration of genetic interactions in some cases has confirmed the classification scheme. Nine phages were assigned to the P2 family and 19 to the lambda family. The remaining four isolates may represent some novel phylogenetic types. Phages recovered from the lysogenic strains of E. coli were all found to be P2 related, whereas a majority of the phages recovered as cell-free plaque-forming units were assignable to the lambda family. It is proposed that the biological attributes of the phages belonging to the two principal families are reflected in the distribution patterns observed. The virions of phage HK256 show multiple tail fibers and may thus represent a "new" virion form among the temperate coliphages.  相似文献

A group of 27 bacteriophages specific for Pseudomonas putida strains PpG1 and PpN has been isolated. The phages were characterized and compared with the previously described virulent (pf 16, af, tf and PMW) and temperate (PP56 and PP71) phages. The new phages belong to B1 and C1 morphotypes, according to Ackerman's classification. Phage DNAs were digested with several endonucleases; the molecular weights and homology of the DNAs were determined. All phages of P. putida isolated up to now were distributed into 10 species (groups), on the basis of particle morphology, genome size and the results of homology studies. Recombination processes are believed to participate in formation of phages belonging to certain species.  相似文献

Six strains of thermophilic hydrocarbon-oxidizing Actinomyces griseomycini were tested for lysogeny. The lysogenic state was detected in the four strains and their phages were isolated. The phages isolated from the three strains were virulent and cause lysis of the host culture. All isolated phages were specific and did not cause lysis of other actinomycetes species. However, the phages had different activity towards the six studied strains of Actinomyces griseomycini. One phage induced lysis only of its indicator culture, other phages caused lysis of four strains, including those two from which no phage was isolated. All phages produced negative colonies of identical morphology. The morphology of their particles was also the same. The phages induced cross-resistance and were characterized by thermoresistance.  相似文献

New data on P. aeruginosa bacteriophages isolated from patients, as well as from washings obtained from various objects, in a surgical hospital are presented. 14 pure strains of P. aeruginosa bacteriophages have been isolated from 90 specimens of the material under study. The morphology of the colonies, the titer and the spectrum of action of the phages are characterized. The spectrum of action of polyvalent combination obtained by the mechanical mixture of different phages has been studied. The most active phages have been found to lyse 71.1, 63.1, 59.2 and 41.8 per cent of P. aeruginosa museum strains (225 strains).  相似文献

More than 200 coagulase-positive strains of animal origin have been studied by means of Staphylococcus aureus typing phages, belonging to two international sets and intended for typing staphylococci isolated from large cattle and humans, and experimental "chicken" phage A 1591. Among S. aureus strains the cultures isolated from swine, cows, chickens, and belonging to biotypes B1, C1, B2, respectively, have been mostly (in 78.5-90.0% of cases) determined by phage typing. The strains belonging to one biotype have proved to be sensitive predominantly to the same phages. In this connection further differentiation of staphylococci within individual biotypes by means of the phages used in these experiments seems to be impracticable. S. intermedius strains have been found to be completely resistant to the above phages, which confirms that S. intermedius is rightly considered to be an independent species of coagulase-positive staphylococci.  相似文献

Ten phages of Bacillus polymyxa were isolated from four different Brazilian soils. All were dsDNA-containing phages belonging to Bradley types A and B. Data obtained from electron microscopy and tests of resistance against physical and chemical agents showed that the isolates could be distributed among six different groups. Host range data were in agreement with this classification. When tested against 88 strains of 18 Bacillus species, these phages only infected B. polymyxa strains, thus revealing specificity for this species. Any bacterial strain can be infected by virulent phages or harbour one or more prophages. Therefore, bacteria-phage interactions are to be regarded as fundamental properties of bacteria. In current industrial fermentation processes phages can be advantageously employed for the identification of bacterial production strains (phage typing). In some cases phages are involved in the production of enzymes and special substances. The fundamental importance of phages in any technical fermentation process, however, is based on the peculiarities of their obligately parasitic life cycle. The propagation of phages in fermentation processes can cause complete (or at least partial) lysis of the production strains and, consequently, serious disturbances in the production process and considerable economic losses. The phage problem in the fermentation industry has not yet been completely solved. For the protection of technical processes against virulent phages five measures are discussed: phage-protected sterile fermentation, employment of alternative cultures, employment of phage-resistant mutants, employment of phage inhibitors, and employment of immobilized bacterial cells. The problem of the protection of bacterial production strains from prophage induction is more difficult and practically unsolved. Two possibilities to minimize the process risk due to temperate phages, the elimination of inducing factors during the fermentation process, and the selection of production strains which are difficult to induce, are discussed.  相似文献

Lysogeny has been first established in strains of parahemolytic vibrios of serovar O4:K12. Moderate phages belonged to morphological group IV by home A. S. Tikhonenko's classification and were presented by one serological type. No correlation has been revealed between sensitivity to moderate phages of parahemolytic vibrios and specificity of "O"- or "K"-serotypes.  相似文献

S ummary : The present report gives the results of the effect of 10 bacteriophages of Serratia marcescens on 107 strains of the genus Serratia . The phage S103 was the most effective (80% strains lyzed), and the phage PK the least (12% strains lyzed). Only 13 strains were resistant to all the phages studied. The majority of the strains of the genus studied could be allocated to one of seven groups on the basis of their sensitivity to the phages.  相似文献
