We have addressed the role of occipital and somatosensory cortex in a tactile discrimination task. Sight-ed and congenitally blind subjects rated the roughness and distance spacing for a series of raised dot patterns. When judging roughness, intermediate dot spacings were perceived as being the most rough, while distance judgments generated a linear relation. Low-frequency rTMS applied to somatosensory cortex disrupted roughness without affecting distance judgments, while rTMS to occipital cortex disrupted distance but not roughness judgments. We also tested an early blind patient with bilateral occipital cortex damage. Her performance on the roughness determination task was normal; however, she was greatly impaired with distance judgments. The findings suggest a double-dissociation effect in which roughness and distance are primarily processed in somatosensory and occipital cortex, respectively. The differential effect of rTMS on task performance and corroborative clinical evidence suggest that occipital cortex is engaged in tactile tasks requiring fine spatial discrimination.  相似文献

Transforming growth factor (TGF)-betas are powerful cytokines that are secreted as inactive (latent) precursors into the extracellular space. To exert their pleiotropic functions, latent TGF-betas require activation. This requisite restricts TGF-beta signaling to tissues that express TGF-beta-activating proteins such as the adhesion molecule alphavbeta6 integrin. Recent work has uncovered the molecular mechanism by which alphavbeta6 integrin activates latent TGF-beta. Latent-TGF-beta-binding protein 1 has been identified as being the major component of this process, and the integrin-interacting region has been mapped to a poorly conserved sequence stretch called the hinge region.  相似文献

There are many quality-control mechanisms that ensure high fidelity of gene expression. One of these is the nonsense-mediated decay (NMD) pathway, which destroys aberrant mRNAs that contain premature termination codons generated as a result of biosynthetic errors or random and programmed gene mutations. Two complexes that initially bind to RNA in the nucleus have been suggested to be involved in NMD in the cytoplasm. Here we propose an alternative model that involves nuclear scanning, on the basis of recent evidence for nuclear translation.  相似文献

Middle Devonian heliolitids and favositids from Central Bohemia, belonging to Heliolites 'intermedius' LeMaitre and Favosites goldfussi Orbigny , incorporated ostracode shells within their living corallite structures. The ostracode shells were sealed in by skeletal tissue that was septal in origin (Heliolites) or they were roofed over by tabulae (Favosites). The foreign shell was near the axis of the polyp when trapped within the coral skeleton. Only ostracodes, not other rounded shells or sedimentary particles, were trapped in this way. Approximately one in 30 favositid corallites and one in 70 heliolitid corallites display this peculiar condition, where the ostracode shells seem to have been swallowed by the polyps. A probable scenario involves the injury of the mouth area and the trapping of the ostracodes. In recent years, dolphin-assisted therapy has become very popular and an increasing number of facilities offer therapy programs with dolphins worldwide. To this date, there are no studies concerning the behavior of dolphins during these therapies. As a result of speculations that the echolocation of dolphins may play an important role for the success of the therapy and the high publicity of this in the media, people pay much more for dolphin-assisted than for other animal-assisted therapy programs. Based on publications in medicine, we will show that ultrasound emitted by dolphins could have an effect on biological tissue under some circumstances; such as sufficient intensity, repeated application over several days or weeks and a certain application duration per session. We recorded 83 sessions at the “Dolphins Plus”, a fenced area with ocean water in the Florida Keys. Our observations demonstrate that only one out of five observed dolphins behave significantly differently towards patients compared to other humans and that the duration of the observed close contacts did not meet the requirements for common ultrasound therapies.  相似文献

The complexity of the Anaphase-Promoting Complex (APC), the major ubiquitin ligase in mitotic control, has been puzzling investigators ever since its discovery. Recent biochemical and genetic studies have now provided insights not only into the architecture of the complex, but also into how activators are recruited to the APC. Is stunning prevented by ischemic preconditioning?   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
In a model of global ischemia in the isolated perfused rat heart, a 20-min ischemic period followed by 30 min of reperfusion induces a decrease in isovolumic developed pressure (LVDP) and +dP/dtmax to 61 ± 6% and 61 ± 7% of baseline, respectively. Left ventricular end-diastolic pressure (LVEDP) increases to 36 ± 4 mmHg at the end of the reperfusion period. No significant necrotic area as assessed by triphenyltetrazolium chloride (TTC) was detected at the end of the reperfusion period. By an immunohistochemical method using antiactin monoclonal antibodies 10.8 ± 1.9% of unstained cells were detected in the stunned hearts and 10.3 ± 1.2% in control hearts. Preceding the ischemic episode with a cycle of 5 min of ischemia followed by 10 min of reperfusion (ischemic preconditioning) protected contractile function. LVDP and +dP/dtmax now stabilized at 89 ± 5% and 94 ± 5% of baseline respectively. LVEDP was 20 ± 2 mmHg at the end of the reperfusion period. The protection of contractile dysfunction after 20 min of ischemia was achieved also by early reperfusion of low Ca2+-low pH perfusate. With this intervention LVDP stabilized at 87 ± 5% of baseline. LVEDP was 12 ± 2 mmHg at the end of the reperfusion period. A positive inotropic intervention induced by a modified postextrasystolic potentiation protocol at the end of the reperfusion period increases LVDP to levels higher than baseline in the stunned hearts. However, these values were less than those obtained in control hearts. Ischemic preconditioning significantly increased the maximal inotropic response. Therefore, ischemic preconditioning diminishes the contractile dysfunction of early stunning.  相似文献
