1. 1. Seven thermal conditions were imposed on male sitting subjects (slightly clothed: 0.6 clo).

2. 2. A thermal mannikin was also used to determine the exact operative temperature, T0.

3. 3. Conditions were: uniform (UN: all parameters at 24.5°C, air velocity at 0.15 ms−1), heated ceiling (HC at 45°C), heated floor (HF at 34°C), cold floor (CF at 14°C), two conditions of one cold wall at 6°C (CW1 and CW2 respectively with and without air temperature compensation) and increased air velocity (AV at 0.4 ms−1).

4. 4. Local skin temperatures and answers to questionnaires were obtained.

5. 5. Skin temperature variations were affected by conditions and slight T0 changes.

6. 6. Comfort judgments were fairly well related to T0, especially when expressed as differences between actual non-uniform environment and the uniform one.

7. 7. It is concluded that, in case of non-uniform environments close to thermoneutral zone, thermal comfort or discomfort reflects the climate alterations better than the thermal sensation does.

1. 1.|In 15 conscious Pekin ducks, 40 “warm sensitive” hypothalamic neurons were identified according to their discharge rates at 40°C Thy (F40), local temperature coefficients (Δ/ΔT) and Q10.

2. 2.|Q10 and either F40 or ΔFT were little or not related.

3. 3.|A positive correlation between F40 and ΔFT was observed which was particularly close (r = 0.94 and 0.96) when the neurons were classified according to their Q10 of <2 and >2.

4. 4.|The results suggest that neurons with positive temperature coefficients in the duck's hypothalamus mostly exhibit linear to exponential temperature-discharge relationships.

5. 5.|This is an contrast to observations on mammalian hypothalamic thermosensitive neurons and may relate to the absence of the thermosensory function in the duck's rostral brainstem.

1. 1. A method for assessing the set temperature regulating behavioural thermoregulation in the fish Chromus chromus is described.

2. 2. Cholinergic stimulation of the brain, both muscarinic and nicotinic, lowered the thermoregulatory set point.

3. 3. Histamine raised the set temperature by an action on H1-receptors.

4. 4. Increasing brain catecholamines, with -Dopa, also raised the set temperature but it was not possible to distinguish between dopaminergic or noradrenergic components of this response.

1. 1.|The jumping behaviour of the Mexican jumping bean (Laspeyresia solitans) is stereotyped and predictable and has the characteristics of behaviour which is under the control of a central programme.

2. 2.|Temperatures above and below about 25°C decrease the length of time that movements occur. The movements stop relatively abruptly and not gradually. The duration of movements is apparently controlled by an internal timer whose duration of operation is influenced by temperature.

3. 3.|The frequency of movements show instantaneous temperature compensation from about 21 to 45°C (Q10 = 1.23), whereas between 15 and 21°C there is a large temperature dependence (Q10 = 21.9).

1. 1.|Circadian changes in heat production (M), heat loss (H), core temperature (Tc) and feeding activity (FA) of ad-lib fed rats were observed by direct and indirect calorimetry.

2. 2.|M, H and Tc showed a clear nocturnal increase associated with several discrete increases.

3. 3.|Whereas the slope of M vs Tc relation did not change appreciably within a day, the slope of H vs Tc or thermal conductance vs Tc relation tended to decrease at night, implying that the correlation between heat loss and body temperature is also a function of time of day in rats.

1. 1. To examine whether the increased hand blood flow (BF), mainly arteriovenous anastomoses (AVA) flow, limits an increase in other skin BF during thermal load, 7 healthy male subjects were exercised for 25 min and then rested for 20 min in wrist occlusion (OCCL) and control experiments (CONT), respectively.

2. 2. In OCCL, both wrists were occluded at pressure of 250 mmHg from the 15th min of exercise.

3. 3. In CONT, the wrists were free throughout the experiment. Finger and forearm skin temperature greatly increased in CONT, but did not rise in OCCL.

4. 4. Suppressed hand BF in OCCL induced compensatory increases of skin BF and sweat rate in the chest at least.

5. 5. However, wrist occlusion induced a significant rise in esophageal temperature and a significant fall in mean arterial pressure (MAP).

6. 6. These results suggest that the rising hand BF greatly contributes to limit the increase in other skin BFs without any fall of MAP during thermal load.

The non-ionic detergent, Brij 58, has been shown to specifically lyse the cytoplasmic membrane of Escherichia coli. This communication examines the electron transport system in membrane fractions prepared from such lysates and compares this system to those prepared by mechanical procedures.

1. 1. The particulate fraction contained all of the respiratory carriers demonstrable in whole cells in essentially the same ratios although enriched by 3–5-fold over their concentration in whole cells.

2. 2. Succinate, formate, and NADH but not glutamate, malate, or dihydroorotate were actively oxidized by the particulate fraction.

3. 3. With the exception of the formate oxidase system which appeared to utilize a system bypassing flavoprotein and cytochrome b1, the other enzymatic activities appeared to function primarily through normal electron transport routes.

4. 4. The NADH oxidase and succinoxidase systems were sensitive to inhibition by 2-n-heptyl-4-hydroxyquinoline-N-oxide and antimycin A. The results suggest that these inhibitors function at the level of cytochrome b1.

5. 5. All three activities were sensitive to complete inhibition by CN.

6. 6. The results obtained from inhibitor studies coupled with the results obtained from examination of steady state, anaerobic, and chemical reduction of the respiratory pigments permitted a scheme for electron flow to be proposed.

1. We recorded impulse activity of thermosensitive hypothalamic neurons in rat brain slices during superfusion with ethanol at constant temperatures and during slow sinusoidal temperature changes.

2. At constant temperatures of 37 °C, ethanol application typically induced a triphasic change of the firing rate: An initial excitation turned into complete inhibition followed by spontaneous recovery to higher firing rates.

3. Ethanol application increased the neurons’ temperature sensitivity remarkably.

4. Our data indicate complex neuromodulatory effects of ethanol with different time delays which interfere with basic mechanisms of temperature transduction.

1. 1. A new type of simulator for clothing microclimate was designed and constructed.

2. 2. The simulator was designed to simulate the humidity fluctuation of clothing microclimate as observed under light working conditions and to measure the surface temperature of sample fabrics against the skin by means of a radiation thermometer.

3. 3. Knitted fabrics of cotton and polyester, and polyethylene films were used as specimens with different hygroscopicities.

4. 4. The quick rise and fall in the surface temperature of cotton fabric was observed under rapid fluctuations of the microclimate humidity.

5. 5. Under the same humidity fluctuations, the temperature of polyester fabric rose and fell more moderately than that of cotton fabrics, and the temperature of the polyethylene film did not change. When the rate of change in stimulus temperature is higher, the threshold temperature of warm sensation of the skin comes closer to a given adaption temperature.

6. 6. Therefore, the rapid and large changes in the fabric temperature against the skin, which were observed especially for hygroscopic cotton fabric, must affect the thermal comfort of clothing.

1. 1. The sensitivity of serum enzyme levels as indicators of tissue damage is less well established in the prodromal period of heatstroke, especially for sub-lethal stress conditions.

2. 2. Anaesthetized rats were exposed to two different sets of thermal conditions.

3. 3. Plasma levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), creatine kinase (CK) and lactate dehydrogenase (LD) were assayed in each group upon termination of stress, 6 h post-stress and 24 h post-stress.

4. 4. The tissue “damage” sustained was mild to moderate and completely reversible.

5. 5. The rate of rise in body temperature may constitute an important factor in the ultimate pathology.

6. 6. CK proved to be the most sensitive parameter of tissue “damage”.

1. 1.Increased heat tolerance in FHM-cells from Pimephales promelas (Pisces) can be induced by culturing the cells at elevated temperatures (heat resistant acclimation) as well as by heat shock (heat hardening).

2. 2.After shift of culturing temperature (CT) from 16 to 32°C both effects are detectable with different temporal patterns.

3. 3.Cellular concentrations of heat-shock proteins correlate with the hardening effect but not with heat resistance acclimation.

4. 4.Several culturing temperature specific proteins were detected. The patterns of some enzymes are also altered by culturing temperature.

5. 5.Heat resistance acclimation is not caused by selection of a thermoresistant subpopulation of cells.

6. 6.Heat hardening and heat resistance acclimation must be distinguished as different phenomena in FHM-cells.

1. 1. Ten male students remained in a severely cold room (-25°C) for 20 min. thereafter, they transferred in a warm room (25°C) for 20 min.

2. 2. This pattern was repeated three times, total cold exposure time amounting to 60 min.

3. 3. In the warm room, the subjects removed their cold-protective jackets, or wore them continously.

4. 4. Rectal temperature, skin temperatures, manual performance and thermal comfort were measured during the experiment.

5. 5. Removing cold-protective jackets after severe cold exposure increased peripheral skin temperatures and reduced the discomfort in the warm room.

6. 6. However, these results were accompanied by a greater decrease in rectal temperature and manual performance.

7. 7. It is recommended that workers continue to wear cold-protective clothing in the warm areas outside of the cold storage to prevent decreases in deep body temperature and work efficiency caused by repated cold exposures.

1. 1.|The effects of electrical stimulation of the preoptic region, on autonomic thermoregulatory responses, were studied in conscious sheep at ambient temperatures of 5, 20, and 40°C.

2. 2.|Stimulation of the dorsal preoptic region elicited co-ordinated thermoregulatory responses characterized by increased respiratory frequency (RF), vasodilation of the ears and lowered body temperature. Stimulation inhibited shivering in cold environments.

3. 3.|The thermoregulatory responses were greater at 5°C in unshorn than in shorn sheep. Increased RF, induced at 20 and 40°C, persisted several minutes after stimulation ceased.

4. 4.|Intraventricular injection of noradrenaline reduced both normal and electrically-induced panting.

5. 5.|Sheep would press panels to electrically stimulate the preoptic region and this “self-stimulation” activated heat-loss mechanisms.

1. 1. The shape changes during osmotic swelling of human erythrocytes in a hypotonic medium at room temperature, at 45°C and at the denaturation temperature (49.5°C) of the cytoskeletal protein, spectrin, have been monitored by video microscopy.

2. 2. At room temperature the great majority of cells (which were discoid prior to injection of hypotonic medium) swelled to a spherical shape through an intermediate ellipsoidal form.

3. 3.At 49.5°C (where cells had cupped shapes prior to injection) the transition to the spherical form often involved a stomatocytic rather than ellipsoidal intermediate shape.

4. 4. The cupped form of the cells prior to injection did not account for the high incidence of cells swelling through a stomatocytic intermediate shape at 49.5°C.

5. 5. A theoretical treatment by Svetina and Zeks (1983) attributes the nature of the osmotic swelling transition shape to the difference in area between the outer and inner faces of the membrane. Our results would be consistent with the theoretical predictions if it is assumed that an increase in the area of the inner face of the membrane follows thermal denaturation of the cytoskeleton of cells in hypotonic medium.

1. 1.Muscle potentials in fibrillar flight muscles of worker and drone honeybees were recorded extracellularly at thoracic temperatures from 30 to 10°C.

2. 2.Extinction temperatures for muscle potentials were higher in drones for all treatments.

3. 3.Cold acclimation (15°C) lowered extinction temperatures significantly in workers and drones. Acclimitization changed extinction temperatures significantly only in drones.

4. 4.Cold acclimitization had a bigger effect on the rate of muscle potential amplitude decline with decreasing temperature than acclimation.

5. 5.Acclimation and acclimitization had no effect on the increase of muscle potential duration with falling temperature.

6. 6.Muscle potential frequency during shivering was not much different between cold and warm treated bees.
