None of the 27 studiedRhinanthoideae is host-specific. Some host plants are preferred (e.g.Rosaceae, Fabaceae, Lamiaceae, Asteraceae, Cyperaceae, andPoaceae), others are strictly avoided (e.g.Orchidaceae). Self-parasitism and parasitism on rhizomes are wide-spread. This and the number of haustoria developed are closely related to number of host plants available. Most of theRhinanthoideae studied have haustoria also at the main root. No serious injury of host plants byRhinanthoideae under natural conditions can be demonstrated.

To investigate the phylogenetic relationships among the powdery mildew fungi of some economically important tropical trees belonging to Oidium subgenus Pseudoidium, we conducted molecular phylogenetic analyses using 30 DNA sequences of the rDNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions and 26 sequences of the domains D1 and D2 of the 28S rDNA obtained from the powdery mildews on Hevea brasiliensis (para rubber tree), Anacardium occidentale (cashew), Bixa orellana, Citrus spp., Mangifera indica (mango), and Acacia spp. The results indicate that the powdery mildew fungi isolated from these tropical trees are closely related to one another. These powdery mildews are also closely related to E. alphitoides (including Erysiphe sp. on Quercus phillyraeoides). Because of the obligate biotrophic nature of the powdery mildew fungi, the relationship between powdery mildews and their host plants is conservative. However, the present study suggests that a particular powdery mildew species has expanded its host ranges on a wide range of the tropical trees. This article also suggests that a powdery mildew fungus distributed in temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere expanded its host ranges onto tropical plants and may be a good example of how geographical and host range expansion has occurred in the Erysiphales.  相似文献

The parasitic dinoflagellate Amoebophrya sp. ex Karlodinium veneficum was used to test two hypotheses: (1) infection of cells decreases with increasing host toxicity and (2) parasitism causes the catabolism of host toxin. To test the first hypothesis, host strains differing in toxin content were inoculated with dinospores of Amoebophrya sp. derived from infected cultures of toxic and non-toxic K. veneficum, with resulting infections assessed following 24-h incubations. Contrary to expectations, infection of K. veneficum by Amoebophrya sp. was positively correlated with host toxicity. To examine the second hypothesis, synchronous infection with >80% of cells being parasitized was induced using a toxic strain of K. veneficum, and total toxin concentration (intracellular plus extracellular levels of KmTX1) was followed over the 3-day infection cycle. Toxin content ml−1 increased with growth of K. veneficum in uninfected control cultures, but declined in infected cultures as the parasite completed its life cycle. On a cellular basis, toxin content of infected and uninfected cultures differed little during the experiment, suggesting that the parasite does not actively catabolise host toxin. Rather, infection appears to promote degradation of toxins via death of host cells and subsequent bacterial activity. Results indicate that Amoebophrya sp. ex K. veneficum has greater potential to impact toxic strains relative to non-toxic host strains in natural systems. Thus, Amoebophrya sp. ex. K. veneficum may limit the occurrence of toxic K. veneficum blooms in marine and estuarine environments, while simultaneously functioning as a pathway for dissipation of host toxin.  相似文献

Bracon hebetor (Say) (Hymenoptera : Braconidae) is a gregarious parasitoid that attacks a variety of important lepidopterous pests of stored product and in the field. In this study the effect of host species, size and larval competition on parasitoid size, survival and development were investigated. In laboratory studies, wasp eggs at a range of densities, were placed on larvae of different weight of three Lepidoptera host species namely Adoxophyes orana (Fischer von Röslerstamm, Tortricidae), Plodia interpunctella (Hubner, Pyralidae) and, Lobesia botrana(Dennis & Schiffermueller, Tortricidae). On A. orana survival of immature parasitoids was very low at all densities and different host weights. On L. botrana survival progressively reduced as egg density increased at both host weights examined for this host. Survival on P. interpunctella was significantly affected by egg density but not by host weight. Initial egg density had a significant effect on the size of emerging adults from each rearing host. Smaller adult parasitoids emerged as egg density per larva increased. Larval host weight of P. interpunctella and A. orana had a significant effect on the size of emerging adult parasitoids mainly at the higher egg densities used in these experiments. The above results of host quality on fitness of parasitoid are discussed.  相似文献

The host alternating aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi (L.), feeds in summer on several different species of grasses but is monophagous on its winter host, Prunus padus L. The monophagy on P. padus could be a result of the restricted host range of the several different generations colonizing, or feeding, on this host during autumn–winter–spring. This study shows that the winter host plant specificity of R. padi is controlled mainly by the preference of the females remigrating (gynoparae) to the winter host, P. padus, in autumn. The other generations living on the winter host, i.e., sexual females, males, and spring generations, all accept a broader range of winter hosts. One alternative host plant, Prunus spinosa L., could be utilized by all generations associated with the winter host, except for the females remigrating at autumn.  相似文献

The foraging responses of 1–2-day-old naïve female Platygaster demades to odors of apple and pear foliage and host insect eggs were measured. The host origin of P. demades had no effect on the parasitoids’ longevity, host preference, or foraging behavior. Four distinct behaviors related to oviposition were identified. In choice experiments, more female parasitoids responded to apple foliage with no midge eggs than to midge eggs alone. In a Y-tube olfactometer, parasitoids preferred the plant cues to clean air, and responded equally to both apple and pear odors. The results indicate that P. demades utilizes plant cues to locate the habitat of its host and then searches for host eggs to parasitize.  相似文献

Listronotus maculicollis (Dietz) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is a potential novel host of the braconid parasitoid Microctonus hyperodae Loan, but initial studies have shown that levels of parasitism are lower than in the natural host L. bonariensis (Kuschel). A novel bacterial indicator test was used to determine whether the lower level of parasitism was due to behavioural factors, lack of oviposition, or host resistance. The incidence of ovipositor penetration by the parasitoid M. hyperodae into adult L. maculicollis was measured by immersing the ovipositor of the parasitoid in the facultative pathogen, Serratia marcescens Bizio. Adult weevils were then exposed to parasitoids for up to 72 h and rapid mortality used as an indicator of oviposition penetration. Survival was assessed after six days and surviving weevils were dissected and examined for parasitoid larvae. Mortality among L. maculicolis exposed to parasitoids treated with S. marcescens was significantly higher (P<0.001) than the controls but significantly lower (P<0.001) than in the natural host, L. bonariensis. Dissection of weevils exposed to uncontaminated parasitoids revealed that parasitism in L. maculicolis was significantly (P<0.001) less than parasitism in L. bonariensis. Serratia marcescens-induced mortality plus parasitism of surviving weevils in the parasitoid plus bacteria treatments produced a similar overall effect. Application of bacteria to the parasitoid ovipositor provided a rapid, simple test for ovipositor penetration, which shows potential for separation of behavioural and physiological defence mechanisms in parasitoid/host range studies.  相似文献

Alternate host plants of cereal rust fungi are necessary for studying the rust sexual cycle and pathogenicity. These plants are usually difficult to propagate through cloning, while seed-propagated plants may have variable responses to the pathogen. To overcome these obstacles, tissue culture, under controlled and aseptic conditions, was utilized for clonal propagation and in vitro inoculation of the following species: Rhamnus palaestinus Boiss., the alternate host of oat (Avena spp.) crown rust (Puccinia coronata Corda); Thalictrum speciosissimum L., the alternate host of brown leaf rust of wheat (Puccinia recondita f. sp. tritici Eriks. & Henn.); and Lycopsis arvensis L., the alternate host of rye (Secala spp.) leaf rust (Puccinia recondita f. sp. recondita Rob. & Desm.). Shoot culture procedures for initial establishment and proliferation were developed for all three alternate host species. Shoot cultures were multiplied at rates ranging from 0.3 to 1.7 shoots/week. Successful infection following inoculation with teliospores of the corresponding rust fungi was obtained for R. palaestinus and T. speciosissimum but not for L. arvensis. The hardening and acclimatization efficiency of rooted T. speciosissimum and L. arvensis was of 80–90%. The propagation efficiency for R. palaestinus was not successful because of the low rate and poor quality of its rooting. It is concluded that the in vitro system might be used as an alternative method for inoculation and multiplication of alternate hosts of cereal rusts, although more experimentation is needed to define accurately the appropriate conditions for the proper infection response. Summary A DNA fragment with homology to the cytokinin (ipt) gene from biotype I Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain Ach5 was cloned from the Ti plasmid of the wide host range biotype III Agrobacterium strain Tm-4 and sequenced. The fragment contains an intact ipt coding sequence. However, the 3 non-coding region of this ipt gene is rearranged due to a 0.9 kb deletion fusing it to the 3 coding region of the neighbouring gene 6a, most of which was found to be deleted. The Tm-4 ipt gene is strongly related to the partially deleted ipt gene of the limited host range biotype III strain Ag162. To test its biological activity, the Tm-4 ipt gene was inserted into a specially constructed, disarmed Ti vector lacking tzs and tested on tobacco, where the rearranged ipt gene induced shoot formation. The cloned Tm-4 ipt gene was mutated with Tn5 and the intact gene on the wild-type Tm-4 Ti plasmid was replaced by the mutated gene. The resulting strain was avirulent on tobacco but normally virulent on the natural host of the wild-type strain Tm-4, grapevine. As the biotype 1 6b gene diminishes the effect of a corresponding ipt gene, a larger Tm-4 fragment carrying both the ipt gene and an adjacent 6b-like gene was also tested on tobacco and compared with the Tm-4 ipt fragment alone and with an ipt and 6b/ipt fragment derived from Ach5. The Tm-4 6b gene diminishes the effect of the Tm-4 ipt gene, showing the Tm-4 6b gene to be active as well. The Tm-4 6b/ipt combination is less effective than the Ach5 combination. The potential of six Steinernema isolates, isolated from different provinces in Vietnam, was evaluated in the laboratory against Galleria mellonella and Spodoptera littoralis. Steinernema sangi and S. robustispiculum TN24 had the highest penetration rate in both hosts according to a penetration rate assay. The virulence assay showed that S. sangi had a high virulence to both hosts and along with isolate TN38 it was the most mobile among the isolates tested. The migration of S. sangi in sand columns with an insect host at the bottom was significantly higher than in sand columns without insect host. This Steinernema species was the only one that penetrated a host in 24h after migrating 10cm in sand columns at 25°C. Moreover, a multiplication assay showed that S. sangi produced a high number of infective juveniles in G. mellonella. However, all Steinernema isolates tested had low multiplication rates in S. littoralis.  相似文献

Lygodium microphyllum, first naturalized in the 1960s, has aggressively invaded forest-dominated wetlands in southern and central Florida. The indeterminate growth of this invasive climbing fern creates thick rachis mats which climb over shrubs and trees smothering the underlying growth and carrying ground fires into the forest canopy. Foreign surveys for natural enemies identified 20 species of insects and two species of mites. Host range testing of three insect species and one mite included five Lygodium species (L. palmatum, L. volubile, L. cubense, L. venustum, and L. oligostachyum) native to the United States and the West Indies. A molecular phylogeny of the genus was conducted using the trnL intron and the trnL-F intergenic spacer of chloroplast DNA to determine the relationship of L. microphyllum to other Lygodium species. Three major clades appeared, one with L. palmatum and L. articulatum (the most basal), a second with L. reticulatum and L. microphyllum, and a third comprising the other species examined. Lygodium microphyllum appeared at the end of a long branch approximately equidistant from all species of interest preventing the correlation of genetic distance and host range behavior. However, inspection of the results of host range experiments showed a relationship between the presence of a related biotype or species of the insect on a related alternate host and the ability of that insect to develop on that alternate host. Ancestral host usage and ecological fitting are examined as possible explanations for the acceptance of L. palmatum by the tested musotimine insects.  相似文献

To identify the animal sources for Cryptosporidium and Giardia contamination, we genotyped Cryptosporidium and Giardia spp. in wildlife from Sydney’s water catchments using sequence analysis at the 18S rRNA locus for Cryptosporidium and 18S rRNA and glutamate dehydrogenase (gdh) for Giardia. A total of 564 faecal samples from 16 different host species were analysed. Cryptosporidium was identified in 8.5% (48/564) samples from eight host species and Giardia was identified in 13.8% (78/564) from seven host species. Eight species/genotypes of Cryptosporidium were identified. Five G. duodenalis assemblages were detected including the zoonotic assemblages A and B.  相似文献

The solitary parasitoids Aphidius erviHaliday (Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae) and Aphelinus asychisWalker (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) attacked but generally did not oviposit in pea aphids parasitized by the other species. Wasps selectively oviposited in unparasitized hosts when given a choice. Host discrimination depended on the recognition of internal cues. Females of A. asychiseither could not recognize or ignored A. ervi'sexternal host marking pheromone. Under most conditions, A. ervisurvived in superparasitized hosts, killing competing A. asychislarvae by physical attack and possibly physiological suppression. The outcome of larval competition was not affected by oviposition sequence or age difference between larvae; A. asychissurvived only when it had substantially completed larval development before the host was superparasitized by A. ervi.It is suggested that competition for host resources incurs a cost, for the winner in terms of reduced size or increased development time and for the loser in terms of lost progeny and searching time. Consequently, heterospecific host discrimination can be functional. Internal, and probably general, cues enable wasps to recognize and avoid oviposition in hosts already parasitized by an unrelated species.  相似文献

Fopius arisanus (Sonan) and Diachasmimorpha tryoni (Cameron) are two important solitary endoparasitoids of tephritid fruit flies. The former species attacks host eggs while the latter attacks host larvae, and both species emerge as adults from the host puparium. This study investigated intrinsic competition between these two parasitoids, as well as aspects of intraspecific competition within each species in the Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann). Parasitization by F. arisanus resulted in direct mortality of host eggs and prolonged development of host eggs and larvae. Superparasitism by F. arisanus was uncommon when mean parasitism per host patch was <50%, but increased with rising rates of parasitism. Superparasitism by D. tryoni was more common. In superparasitized hosts, supernumerary individuals of F. arisanus were killed through physiological suppression, while supernumerary larvae of D. tryoni were killed mainly through physical attack. In multiparasitized hosts, dissections showed that 81.6% of D. tryoni eggs in the presence of F. arisanus larvae died within 3 days, indicating physiological inhibition of egg hatch. Rearing results further showed that F. arisanus won almost all competitions against D. tryoni. The ratio of D. tryoni stings to ovipositions was lower in hosts not previously parasitized by F. arisanus than in parasitized hosts, suggesting that D. tryoni can discriminate against parasitized hosts. The mechanism that F. arisanus employs to eliminate D. tryoni is similar to that it uses against all other larval fruit fly parasitoids so far reported. The results are discussed in relation to the competitive superiority of early acting species in fruit fly parasitoids, and to a possible competitive-mediated mechanism underlying host shift by D. tryoni to attack non-target flies following the successful introduction of F. arisanus in Hawaii.  相似文献

Summary N2-fixing cyanobacteria occur in symbiotic associations with fungi (ascomycetes) as lichens and with a few green plants. The associated cyanobacterium is always a species ofNostoc orAnabaena. Only a small number of plant genera are involved but there is a remarkable range of host diversity. Associations occur with several bryophytes (e.g.Anthoceros, Blasia, Cavicularia), a pteridophyte (Azolla), cycads (nine genera includingMacrozamia andEncephalartos) and an angiosperm (Gunnera). Except forGunnera, where the cyanobacterium penetrates the plant cells, the cyanobacteria are extracellular with specialized morphological modifications and/or structures of the host plant organs providing an environment which facilitates interaction with the prokaryote.Salient aspects of current knowledge pertaining to the establishment, perpetuation, and functioning of the individual symbioses are summarized. Where possible this includes information concerning recognition and specificity, mode(s) of infection, morphological modifications/adaptations of the host plant and a synopsis of morphological, physiological and biochemical changes common to the symbiotic cyanobacteria. The latter encompasses heterocyst frequencies, enzymes involved in ammonia assimilation, photosynthetic capability and metabolic interaction with the host.TheAzolla-Anabaena symbioses, which have potential agronomic significance as an alternative nitrogen source and maintain continuity with the endophyte through the sexual cycle, are emphasized.  相似文献

Pseudendaphis sp. (Barnes) [Diptera: Cecidomyiidae] is a larval endoparasitoid of the aphidSchoutedenia lutea (van der Goot) [Aphididae: Greenideinae]. A brief investigation of the biology ofPseudendaphis sp. revealed that parasitization by this species occurs only in viviparous instar III to adult life stages of the host aphid. Comparative histology of parasitized, unparasitized and starved aphids was used to evaluate proposed mechanisms of pathogenesis. Parasitization byPseudendaphis sp. was found to cause the destruction of host embryos and pathological changes in the host fat body, yet resulted in an increase in the number of host mycetocytes. There was no evidence of injury to host tissues through direct physical attack, a cytolytic enzyme or starvation-like factors. Remaining hypotheses for altered host histologies in parasitized aphids are selective nutrient depletion and production of a non-cytolytic bioactive substance by thePseudendaphis larvae.   相似文献

TwoApium graveolens var.rapaceum (L.) cultivars that differ in their suitability for the survival and growth ofSpodoptera exigua (Hübner) andTrichoplusia ni (Hübner) were used to examine the effect of genetic and seasonal environmental variation in host plant suitability on the efficacy ofBacillus thuringiensis subsp.kurstaki (Berliner). The effects of host plant genotype andB. thuringiensis were generally independent, so thatB. thuringiensis efficacy was greatest on the resistant host plant cultivar. Host plant suitability varied within growing season for both insect species but, while host plant suitability decreased with increasing plant age forT. ni, the response ofS. exigua to plant age was not as clear. Within season variation in host plant suitability affectedB. thuringiensis efficacy and the interaction betweenB. thuringiensis and host plant cultivar forS. exigua but not forT. ni. Soluble protein and Folin-Denis phenolic concentrations of host plant tissue were not correlated with changes in host plant suitability to either insect species.  相似文献

The introduced parasitoid,Aphytis melinusDeBach (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae), is used for augmentative biological control of California red scale,Aonidiella aurantii(Maskell) (Homoptera: Diaspididae). Commercially reared wasps are reared on oleander scale,Aspidiotus neriiBouché (Homoptera: Diaspididae). Oleander scale covers lack the chemical,O-caffeoyltyrosine, a kairomone mediating host selection byA. melinus.Wasps reared on oleander scale but individually exposed, or primed, toO-caffeoyltyrosine more readily accepted California red scale for probing in laboratory bioassays and parasitized a greater proportion of available California red scale in the field than wasps reared similarly but not exposed toO-caffeoyltyrosine. Thus, it may be possible to improve host recognition of commercial, insectary-rearedA. melinusby exposing them toO-caffeoyltyrosine prior to release. The goal of this study was to develop an inexpensive but effective means of priming thousands of wasps simultaneously toO-caffeoyltyrosine. The most effective method, but potentially the most expensive, was simply to spray parasitized oleander scale on their host plant with diluteO-caffeoyltyrosine prior to wasp emergence. In additional experiments, using controlled doses of syntheticO-caffeoyltyrosine applied to scale covers, we showed that primed wasps require both a lower minimum dose ofO-caffeoyltyrosine for recognition and also respond to measuredO-caffeoyltyrosine doses more consistently than unprimed wasps. The ability to mass-prime thousands of wasps prior to release is a crucial step toward realizing the concept of behavioral improvement of host selection of parasitoids on a commercial scale.  相似文献

Pathogenic Gram-positive bacteria encounter many obstacles in route to successful invasion and subversion of a mammalian host. As such, bacterial species have evolved clever ways to prevent the host from clearing an infection, including the production of specialized virulence systems aimed at counteracting host defenses or providing protection from host immune mechanisms. Positioned at the interface of bacteria/host interactions is the bacterial cell wall, a dynamic surface organelle that serves a multitude of functions, ranging from physiologic processes such as structural scaffold and barrier to osmotic lysis to pathogenic properties, for example the deposition of surface molecules and the secretion of cytotoxins. In order to succeed in a battle with host defenses, invading bacteria need to acquire the nutrient iron, which is sequestered within host tissues. A cell-wall based iron acquisition and import pathway was uncovered in Staphylococcus aureus. This pathway, termed the isd or iron-responsive surface determinant locus, consists of a membrane transporter, cell wall anchored heme-binding proteins, heme/haptoglobin receptors, two heme oxygenases, and sortase B, a transpeptidase that anchors substrate proteins to the cell wall. Identification of the isd pathway provides an additional function to the already bountiful roles the cell wall plays in bacterial pathogenesis and provides new avenues for therapeutics to combat the rise of antimicrobial resistance in S. aureus. This review focuses on the molecular attributes of this locus, with emphasis placed on the mechanism of iron transport and the role of such a system during infection.  相似文献

Artificial and modified natural hosts were exposed to females of the gypsy moth [Lymantria dispar (L.)] hyperparasite,Eurytoma appendigaster (Swederus), to investigate its host recognition behavior on the primary host, which are cocooned larvae of the gypsy moth parasite,Cotesia melanoscela (Ratzeburg). Material(s) which caused drilling behavior by the hyperparasite on host cocoons were extracted with both polar and non-polar solvents. However, cocoons washed with large volumes of solvent still caused substantial drilling activities by females, suggesting that additional cues may be important. Results suggest that host recognition in this hyperparasite involves a variety of host characteristics.   相似文献
