Enhanced biological nitrogen removal processes are necessarily required to cope with more stringent wastewater discharging regulations, especially for wastewater with low level of organic carbon to nitrogen ratios. The intermittent aeration activated sludge process has been received comprehensive attention over the past decades, due to its excellent performance in nitrogen removal and remarkable reduction of energy consumption. Recent advances for this technology was reviewed from aspects of characteristics of system, factors affecting nitrogen removal, nitrous oxide (N2O) emission and its control, and application of the technology and its operation control. Finally, future development was proposed. In the intermittent aeration activated sludge process, aeration duration should be controlled for adequate nitrification and non-aeration duration should be adequate for complete denitrification, and these would benefit both nitrogen removal and N2O mitigation. The step feed strategy could be applied to enhance the better utilization of influent organic carbon for nitrogen removal. Dissolved oxygen (DO) and aerobic duration both affected nitrogen removal in particular that via nitrite in the intermittent aeration process. Nitrite should be removed efficiently to avoid a high N2O emission under both anoxic and aerobic conditions. Intermittent aeration activated sludge process has been applied in the treatment of various wastewaters, such as municipal wastewater, swine wastewater, anaerobic effluents and landfill leachate. For practical application, DO, pH and oxidation–reduction potential could be used as indices for controlling nitrogen removal and N2O mitigation. Microbial ecology in the intermittent aeration activated sludge process should be specifically focused in future studies.  相似文献

An investigation was performed on the biological removal of ammonium nitrogen from synthetic wastewater by the simultaneous nitrification/denitrification (SND) process, using a sequencing batch biofilm reactor (SBBR). System behavior was analyzed as to the effects of sludge type used as inoculum (autotrophic/heterotrophic), wastewater feed strategy (batch/fed-batch) and aeration strategy (continuous/intermittent). The presence of an autotrophic aerobic sludge showed to be essential for nitrification startup, despite publications stating the existence of heterotrophic organisms capable of nitrifying organic and inorganic nitrogen compounds at low dissolved oxygen concentrations. As to feed strategy, batch operation (synthetic wastewater containing 100 mg COD/L and 50 mg N-NH(4)(+)/L) followed by fed-batch (synthetic wastewater with 100 mg COD/L) during a whole cycle seemed to be the most adequate, mainly during the denitrification phase. Regarding aeration strategy, an intermittent mode, with dissolved oxygen concentration of 2.0mg/L in the aeration phase, showed the best results. Under these optimal conditions, 97% of influent ammonium nitrogen (80% of total nitrogen) was removed at a rate of 86.5 mg N-NH(4)(+)/Ld. In the treated effluent only 0.2 mg N-NO(2)(-)/L,4.6 mg N-NO(3)(-)/L and 1.0 mg N-NH(4)(+)/L remained, demonstrating the potential viability of this process in post-treatment of wastewaters containing ammonium nitrogen.  相似文献

Under northern climatic conditions, a temporary decrease in the temperature of anaerobic reactors treating swine manure is likely to happen at the farm. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of temperature fluctuations, between 10 and 20 degrees C, on the stability and performance of psychrophilic anaerobic sequencing batch reactors (ASBRs) treating swine manure. Methane yield decreased from 0.266+/-0.014 l/g of total chemical oxygen demand (TCOD) fed to the ASBRs at 20 degrees C to 0.218+/-0.022 and 0.080+/-0.002 l/g TCOD (fed) at 15 and 10 degrees C, respectively. Soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) reduction decreased from 94.2+/-1.1% at 20 degrees C to 78.8+/-3.0% at 15 degrees C and 60.4+/-6.4% at 10 degrees C. Total COD removal also tended to decrease as temperature was lowered, but difference between operating temperatures was not as pronounced. A lower methanogenic activity in the ASBRs operated at 10 degrees C probably favoured quiescent conditions during the settling period, thereby increasing physical removal of the TCOD through sedimentation of the solids with the biomass. When the operating temperature was increased back to 15 and 20 degrees C, methane yield and SCOD reduction improved, but reactor performance remained significantly (P<0.05) lower than that achieved before the cycles at 10 degrees C. Results from this experiment nevertheless suggested that fluctuation in the operating temperature of psychrophilic ASBRs should only have temporary effects on the performance and stability of the process.  相似文献

This study aimed to find optimal operation conditions for nitrogen removal from high strength slaughterhouse wastewater at 11 °C using the intermittently aerated sequencing batch reactors (IASBRs) so as to provide an engineering control strategy for the IASBR technology. Two operational parameters were examined: (1) loading rates and (2) aeration rates. Both the two parameters affected variation of DO concentrations in the IASBR operation cycles. It was found that to achieve efficient nitrogen removal via partial nitrification–denitrification (PND), “DO elbow” point must appear at the end of the last aeration period. There was a correlation between the ammonium oxidizing bacteria (AOB)/nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB) ratio and the average DO concentrations in the last aeration periods; when the average DO concentrations in the last aeration periods were lower than 4.86 mg/L, AOB became the dominant nitrifier population, which benefited nitrogen removal via PND. Both the nitrogen loading rate and the aeration rate influenced the population sizes of AOB and NOB. To accomplish efficient nitrogen removal via PND, the optimum aeration rate (A, L air/min) applied can be predicted according to the average organic loading rates based on mathematical equations developed in this study. The research shows that the amount of N2O generation in the aeration period was reduced with increasing the aeration rate; however, the highest N2O generation in the non-aeration period was observed at the optimum aeration rates.  相似文献

Improvement in post-treatment of digested swine wastewater   总被引:3,自引:1,他引:2
The performance of sequencing batch reactor (SBR) during post-treatment of digested effluent of swine wastewater was investigated. While operating SBR to treat the digested effluent directly, the performance was very poor with COD removal rate about 10%, and NH4+-N removal rate nearly 50%, with a scarce removal of total phosphorus. The performance apparently improved after adding raw swine wastewater or alkali to digested effluent. Although similar results for NH4+-N removal were achieved adopting both measures, the addition of raw wastewater proved superior in removing total nitrogen and total phosphorus. The addition of raw wastewater obtained effluent COD around 300 mg/L which was lower than that after alkali addition i.e. around 550 mg/L. Judged from the investment, oxygen demand, sludge yield, biogas production and running cost, the traditional combined anaerobic-SBR process is unfeasible to treat swine wastewater, while the combined anaerobic-SBR process with addition of raw swine wastewater can be a suitable biotechnology.  相似文献

The degradability of excess activated sludge from a wastewater treatment plant was studied. The objective was establishing the degree of degradation using either air or pure oxygen at different temperatures. Sludge treated with pure oxygen was degraded at temperatures from 22 degrees C to 50 degrees C while samples treated with air were degraded between 32 degrees C and 65 degrees C. Using air, sludge is efficiently degraded at 37 degrees C and at 50-55 degrees C. With oxygen, sludge was most effectively degraded at 38 degrees C or at 25-30 degrees C. Two-stage anaerobic-aerobic processes were studied. The first anaerobic stage was always operated for 5 days HRT, and the second stage involved aeration with pure oxygen and an HRT between 5 and 10 days. Under these conditions, there is 53.5% VSS removal and 55.4% COD degradation at 15 days HRT - 5 days anaerobic, 10 days aerobic. Sludge digested with pure oxygen at 25 degrees C in a batch reactor converted 48% of sludge total Kjeldahl nitrogen to nitrate. Addition of an aerobic stage with pure oxygen aeration to the anaerobic digestion enhances ammonium nitrogen removal. In a two-stage anaerobic-aerobic sludge digestion process within 8 days HRT of the aerobic stage, the removal of ammonium nitrogen was 85%.  相似文献

Changes in the fractions of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria in two laboratory-scale reactors were investigated using 16S rRNA probe hybridizations. The reactors were operated in intermittent aeration mode and different aeration cycles to treat anaerobically digested swine wastewater with ammonia concentrations up to 175 mg NH(3)-N/L. High ammonia removals (>98.8%) were achieved even with increased nitrogen loads and lower aeration: non-aeration time ratios of 1h:3h. Nitrosomonas/Nitrosococcus mobilis were the dominant ammonia-oxidizing bacteria in the reactors. Nitrospira-like organisms were the dominant nitrite-oxidizing bacteria during most of the investigation, but were occasionally outcompeted by Nitrobacter. High levels of nitrifiers were measured in the biomass of both reactors, and ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and nitrite-oxidizing bacterial levels adjusted to changing aeration: non-aeration time ratios. Theoretical ammonia-oxidizer fractions, determined by a mathematical model, were comparable to the measured values, although the measured biomass fractions were different at each stage while the theoretical values remained approximately constant. Stable ammonia removals and no nitrite accumulation were observed even when rRNA levels of ammonia oxidizers and nitrite-oxidizers reached a minimum of 7.2% and 8.6% of total rRNA, respectively. Stable nitrogen removal performance at an aeration: non-aeration ratio of 1h:3h suggests the possibility of significant savings in operational costs.  相似文献

Increased interest in sustainable agriculture and bio-based industries requires that we find more energy-efficient methods for treating cellulose-containing wastewaters. We examined the effectiveness of simultaneous electricity production and treatment of a paper recycling plant wastewater using microbial fuel cells. Treatment efficiency was limited by wastewater conductivity. When a 50 mM phosphate buffer solution (PBS, 5.9 mS/cm) was added to the wastewater, power densities reached 501 +/- 20 mW/m(2), with a coulombic efficiency of 16 +/- 2%. There was efficient removal of soluble organic matter, with 73 +/- 1% removed based on soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) and only slightly greater total removal (76 +/- 4%) based on total COD (TCOD) over a 500-h batch cycle. Cellulose was nearly completely removed (96 +/- 1%) during treatment. Further increasing the conductivity (100 mM PBS) increased power to 672 +/- 27 mW/m(2). In contrast, only 144 +/- 7 mW/m(2) was produced using an unamended wastewater (0.8 mS/cm) with TCOD, SCOD, and cellulose removals of 29 +/- 1%, 51 +/- 2%, and 16 +/- 1% (350-h batch cycle). These results demonstrate limitations to treatment efficiencies with actual wastewaters caused by solution conductivity compared to laboratory experiments under more optimal conditions.  相似文献

A bench scale reactor using a sequencing batch reactor process was used to evaluate the applicability of biosensors for the process optimization of biological carbon and nitrogen removal. A commercial biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) biosensor with a novel microbial membrane was used to determine the duration of each phase by measuring samples in real time in an SBR cycle with filling/anoxic-anaerobic/aerobic/sludge wasting/settling/withdrawal periods. Possible strategies to increase the efficiency for the biological removal of carbon and nitrogen from synthetic wastewater have been developed. The results show that application of a BOD biosensor enables estimation of organic carbon, in real time, allowing the optimization or reduction the SBR cycle time. Some typical consumption patterns for organic carbon in the non-aeration phase of a typical SBR operation were identified. The rate of decrease of BOD measured using a sensor BOD, was the highest in the initial glucose breakdown period and during denitrification. It then slowed down until a 'quiescent period' was observed, which may be considered as the commencement of the aeration period. Monitoring the BOD curve with a BOD biosensor allowed the reduction of the SBR cycle time, which leads to an increase in the removal efficiency. By reducing the cycle time from 8 to 4 h cycle, the removal efficiencies of nitrate, glucose, and phosphorus in a given time interval, were increased to nearly double, while the removal of nitrogen ammonium was increased by one-third.  相似文献

Pollution from concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) are the most serious pollution source in China now, and swine wastewater contains high concentrations of nutrients such as chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand 5 (BOD5), ammonium, and emergent contaminants related to public health. Biological processes are the most popular treatment methods for COD and ammonium removal. Considering the low operation cost, easy maintenance and high removal rate of contaminants in recent years, nitrogen removal via nitrite and real-time control processes using oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) and/or pH as parameters to control the aerobic and anaerobic cycles of a system has received much attention for animal wastewater treatment. During the biological treatment process, the emergent contaminants such as estrogen, antibiotics, and disinfection reagents have been the focus of research recently, and degradation bacteria and resistance bacteria have also been extracted from activated sludge. The microbial analysis technique is also advancement in the field of biodegradation bacteria and resistance bacteria. All of these advancements in research serve to improve wastewater treatment and decrease environmental hazards, especially for using manure as a fertilizer source for crop production.  相似文献

The effects of COD/N ratio (3-6) and salt concentration (0.5-2%) on organics and nitrogen removal efficiencies in three bench top sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) with synthetic wastewater and one SBR with fish market wastewater were investigated under different operating schedules. The solids retention time (SRT, 20-100 days) and aeration time (4-10h) was also varied to monitor the performance. For synthetic wastewater, chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiencies were consistently greater than 95%, irrespective of changes in COD/N ratio, aeration time and salt concentrations. Increasing the salt concentrations decreased the nitrification efficiency, while high COD/N ratio's favored better nitrogen removal (>90%). The treatment of real saline wastewater ( approximately 3.2%) from a fish market showed high COD (>80%) and nitrogen (>40%) removal efficiencies despite high loading rate and COD/N fluctuations, which is due to the acclimatization of the biomass within the SBR.  相似文献

In this study, the effect of the pretreatment of NH4-N by struvite precipitation on biological nitrogen removal was investigated in treating swine wastewater. Evaluation was mainly focused on nitrification which occurred in the activated sludge system after struvite precipitation. Laboratory experiments were performed at four different hydraulic retention times (HRT), i.e., 48, 32, 24 and 16 h. Results of the long-term operation of systems showed that the struvite precipitation used as the pretreatment of raw swine wastewater enhanced the nitrification performance in activated sludge system by reducing the applied loading rates of NH4-N and TCOD in all operating conditions. The reduction of the applied NH4-N loading rate kept the levels of free ammonia (FA) concentration in biological reactors low and it prevented nitrite accumulation. In addition, the struvite precipitation elicited the biological denitrification reaction and PO4-P removal by increasing the ratios of carbon-to-nitrogen and carbon-to-phosphorus of wastewater after struvite precipitation. The struvite precipitation also enhanced the biological TCOD removal performance by reducing the toxic effect of FA. Triplicate INT-dehydrogenase tests clearly showed that FA inhibited the degradation of organic matter in activated sludge system. Finally, the struvite precipitation contributed to high TCOD, T-N and PO4-P removals of 83, 90, and 97% by facilitating biological reaction at a short HRT of 16 h.  相似文献

A demonstration crystallization reactor and struvite accumulation device for the removal and recovery of phosphorous was constructed and their performance was evaluated using actual swine wastewater for 3.5 years. The wastewater pH was increased by aeration, and the concentrations of total P and soluble PO(4)-P were reduced by a struvite crystallization reaction induced under a high pH condition. A 30% MgCl(2) addition was effective in enhancing the struvite crystallization reaction. The concentrations of suspended solids, total Zn and total Cu, were also decreased by the settling function of the reactor. On removing the efficiencies of these components, no noticeable seasonal fluctuation in performance was observed during the 3.5-year operation. In terms of maximum yield, 171g struvite was obtained from 1m(3) swine wastewater by the demonstration accumulation device for struvite recovery. The recovered struvite needed only air-drying before use since it was approximately 95% pure even without washing.  相似文献

Two photobioreactors inoculated with microalgae from a lagoon containing aerobically treated swine slurry and with sludge from a membrane submerged bioreactor treating winery wastewater were established to treat fish processing wastewater (FPW) at 23 and 31 °C, respectively. The hydraulic retention time (HRT) was decreased in the photobioreactors from 10 to 5 days. Ammonium was completely exhausted in both photobioreactors; however, volatilization was the main removal mechanism for the highest applied load whereas biomass assimilation was the main mechanism for the lowest applied load. Approximately 70% of TCOD (total chemical oxygen demand) and phosphate removal was achieved regardless of temperature. Biomass productivity was as much as 55% higher at 31 °C than at 23 °C. These results suggested that fish processing wastewater could be effectively treated using this technology.  相似文献

Free and immobilized cultures of Spirulina maxima for swine waste treatment   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
We have analyzed the behavior of spirulina maxima at increasing concentration of ammonium nitrogen present in swine waste when it is either growing in suspension or immobilized in polymeric supports. We compared the response of spirulina maxima growth to different concentrations of aeration stabilized swine waste (total phosphorus, ammonium nitrogen) as a way to determine the treatment efficiency of both systems. At a dilution of 50 % of swine waste, the suspended system reached the best results for biomass concentration and nutrient removal. In the immobilized system, at dilutions of 25 and 50 % of swine waste, more than 90 % ammonium nitrogen removal was obtained, and the optimal cell concentration for immobilization was 2 g/l (wet basis).  相似文献

The aim of this study was to examine nitrogen removal from slaughterhouse wastewater in a laboratory-scale sequencing batch reactor (SBR) operated at low dissolved oxygen (DO) levels under two aeration strategies: intermittent aeration (IA) and continuous aeration (CA). Under the IA strategy, during the aeration periods, the maximum DO was controlled at 10% saturation; under the CA strategy, in the first hour of the react phase, the DO was maintained at 10% saturation, and then it was kept at 2–3% saturation in the remaining react phase. Total nitrogen removals of up to 95 and 91% were achieved under the IA and CA aeration strategies, respectively. It is proposed that in situ measurement of oxygen utilization rates can be used to control the operation of SBRs for nitrogen removal.  相似文献

Nitrate and ammonium removal from purified swine wastewater using biogas and air was investigated in continuous reactor operation. A novel type of reactor, a semi-partitioned reactor (SPR), which enables a biological reaction using methane and oxygen in the water phase and discharges these unused gases separately, was operated with a varying gas supply rate. Successful removal of NO(3)(-) and NH(4)(+) was observed when biogas and air of 1L/min was supplied to an SPR of 9L water phase with a NO(2,3)(-)-N and NH(4)(+)-N removal rate of 0.10 g/L/day and 0.060 g/L/day, respectively. The original biogas contained an average of 77.2% methane, and the discharged biogas from the SPR contained an average of 76.9% of unused methane that was useable for energy like heat or electricity production. Methane was contained in the discharged air from the SPR at an average of 2.1%. When gas supply rates were raised to 2L/min and the nitrogen load was increased, NO(3)(-) concentration was decreased, but NO(2)(-) accumulated in the reactor and the NO(2,3)(-)-N and NH(4)(+)-N removal activity declined. To recover the activity, lowering of the nitrogen load and the gas supply rate was needed. This study shows that the SPR enables nitrogen removal from purified swine wastewater using biogas under limited gas supply condition.  相似文献

Although biological nitrogen removal via nitrite is recognized as one of the cost-effective and sustainable biological nitrogen removal processes, nitrite accumulation has proven difficult to achieve in continuous processes treating low-strength nitrogenous wastewater. Partial nitrification to nitrite was achieved and maintained in a lab-scale completely stirred tank reactor (CSTR) treating real domestic wastewater. During the start-up period, sludge with ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) but no nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) was obtained by batch operation with aeration time control. The nitrifying sludge with the dominance of AOB was then directly switched into continuous operation. It was demonstrated that partial nitrification to nitrite in the continuous system could be repeatedly and reliably achieved using this start-up strategy. The ratio of dissolved oxygen to ammonium loading rate (DO/ALR) was critical to maintain high ammonium removal efficiency and nitrite accumulation ratio. Over 85% of nitrite accumulation ratio and more than 95% of ammonium removal efficiency were achieved at DO/ALR ratios in an optimal range of 4.0–6.0 mg O2/g N d, even under the disturbances of ammonium loading rate. Microbial population shift was investigated, and fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis indicated that AOB were the dominant nitrifying bacteria over NOB when stable partial nitrification was established.  相似文献

The feasibility of using a two-stage autotrophic nitrogen removal process to treat sewage was examined in this study. The obtained results showed that total nitrogen (TN) could be efficiently removed by 88.38% when influent TN and chemical oxygen demand (COD) were 45.87 and 44.40 mg/L, respectively. In the first stage, nitritation was instantly achieved by the bioaugmentation strategy, and can be maintained under limited oxygen condition (below 0.2mg/L). The ratio of nitrite to ammonium in the effluent of the nitritation reactor can be controlled at approximate 1.0 by adjusting aeration rate. In the second stage, anammox was realized in the upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor, where the total nitrogen removal rate was 0.40 kg Nm(-3)d(-1) under limited-substrate condition. Therefore, the organic matter in sewage can be firstly concentrated in biomass which could generate biogas (energy). Then, nitrogen in sewage could be removed in a two-stage autotrophic nitrogen removal process.  相似文献
