In termites the evolution of reproductive altruism is not based on a particularly high relatedness between nestmates. For the evolution and maintenance of the ancestral sterile soldier caste, the benefits generated by the soldiers' presence must compensate the loss of the soldiers' reproductive potential. To study the impact of soldiers on colony's fitness, we manipulated the proportion of soldiers to nonsoldiers in colonies of the dry-wood termite Cryptotermes secundus.'Soldier-less' colonies were obtained by removing soldiers and inhibiting their development with an extract of soldier heads. The colonies were set up for 1 year in experimental nests in the field. 'Soldier-less' colonies produced fewer soldiers. The reduction of soldiers neither affected colony survival nor helper growth, but fewer dispersing sexuals were produced in 'soldier-less' than in control colonies. This confirms what was only supposed so far, that in termites soldiers are maintained for their intrinsic benefit to cost ratio.  相似文献

Sex allocation theories predict equal offspring number of both sexes unless differential investment is required or some competition exists. Left undisturbed, elephants reproduce well and in approximately even numbers in the wild. We report an excess of males are born and substantial juvenile mortality occurs, perinatally, in captivity. Studbook data on captive births (CB, n = 487) and premature deaths (PD, <5 years of age; n = 164) in Asian and African elephants in Europe and North America were compared with data on Myanmar timber (Asian) elephants (CB, n = 3070; PD, n = 738). Growth in CB was found in three of the captive populations. A significant excess of male births occurred in European Asian elephants (ratio: 0.61, P = 0.044) and in births following artificial insemination (0.83, P = 0.003), and a numerical inclination in North American African elephants (0.6). While juvenile mortality in European African and Myanmar populations was 21–23%, it was almost double (40–45%) in all other captive populations. In zoo populations, 68–91% of PD were within 1 month of birth with stillbirth and infanticide being major causes. In Myanmar, 62% of juvenile deaths were at >6 months with maternal insufficient milk production, natural hazards and accidents being the main causes. European Asian and Myanmar elephants PD was biased towards males (0.71, P = 0.024 and 0.56, P < 0.001, respectively). The skewed birth sex ratio and high juvenile mortality hinder efforts to help captive populations become self-sustaining. Efforts should be invested to identify the mechanism behind these trends and seek solutions for them.

Hidden cellulases in termites: revision of an old hypothesis   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The intestinal flagellates of termites produce cellulases that contribute to cellulose digestion of their host termites. However, 75% of all termite species do not harbour the cellulolytic flagellates; the endogenous cellulase secreted from the midgut tissue has been considered a sole source of cellulases in these termites. Using the xylophagous flagellate-free termites Nasutitermes takasagoensis and Nasutitermes walkeri, we successfully solubilized cellulases present in the hindgut pellets. Zymograms showed that the hindguts of these termites possessed several cellulases and contained up to 59% cellulase activity against crystalline cellulose when compared with the midgut. Antibiotic treatment administered to N. takasagoensis significantly reduced cellulase activity in the hindgut, suggesting that these cellulases were produced by symbiotic bacteria.  相似文献

In a French population of Alpine marmots (Marmota marmota),the sex ratio at weaning was biased in favor of males. Thisbias also seemed to exist at birth. Under Fisher's equal allocationprinciple, this means that daughters should be more costlyto produce than sons. Because the Alpine marmot can be considereda cooperative breeding species, we investigated whether thedifferential cost between sons and daughters may be explainedby the helper repayment hypothesis. The Alpine marmot usessocial thermoregulation during hibernation, allowing juvenilesto better survive over winter. In the study population, juvenilesurvival during winter increased with group size. More precisely, juvenile survival during winter increased with the number andwith the proportion of subordinate males in the hibernatinggroup, but juvenile survival did not depend on the number of subordinate females. As our results did not support alternativehypotheses to explain the observed bias in sex ratio amongoffspring at emergence, we conclude that the helper repaymenthypothesis is the best candidate to explain the observed offspringsex ratio bias in Alpine marmots. By participating in socialthermoregulation, subordinate males may repay part of the investment they received from their parents and thus become less costlyto produce. We suggest that only subordinate males helped becausethey may gain direct fitness benefits, whereas subordinatefemales may only expect indirect fitness benefits from helping. Finally, the offspring sex ratio per individual parent wasmale biased, but mothers adjusted the size and the sex compositionof their litters according to their phenotypic condition asexpected from the Trivers-Willard hypothesis.  相似文献

In termites, the soldier caste, with its specialized defensive morphology, is one of the most important characteristics for sociality. Most of the basal termite species have both male and female soldiers, and the soldier sex ratio is almost equal or only slightly biased. However, in the apical lineages (especially family Termitidae), there are many species that have soldiers with strongly biased sex ratio. Generally in termites, since high juvenile hormone (JH) titer is required for soldier differentiation from a worker via a presoldier stage, it was hypothesized that the biased soldier-sex ratio was caused by differences in JH sensitivity and/or JH titer between male and female workers. Therefore, we focused on the presoldier differentiation and the worker JH titer in species with only male soldiers (Nasutitermes takasagoensis) and with both male and female soldiers (Reticulitermes speratus) in natural conditions. In the former species, there are four types of workers; male minor, male medium, female medium and female major workers, and presoldiers differentiate from male minor workers. First, we tried to artificially induce presoldiers from male and female workers. In N. takasagoensis, the presoldier differentiation rate and mortality was significantly higher in male minor workers. Morphological analyses showed that both male and female induced presoldiers possessed normal soldier-specific morphologies. It was suggested that female workers, from which soldiers do not differentiate under natural conditions, also maintained the physiological and developmental potential for soldier differentiation. In R. speratus, however, no differences were observed in solder differentiation rate and mortality between male and female workers. Second, the JH titers of each sex/type of workers were quantified by high performance liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry in two different seasons (April and December). The results showed that, in N. takasagoensis, JH titer in male minor workers was consistently higher than those in other worker types. In R. speratus, in contrast, there were no significant differences in JH titers between male and female workers. These results suggested that, in N. takasagoensis, male minor workers maintain JH titers at a high level throughout a year, and this may cause the male-biased presoldier differentiation.  相似文献

Although sex ratios at conception are close to 1:1 in most species of birds, skewed adult sex ratios (ASRs) are not uncommon in populations of birds, and occur frequently at local and temporal scales. ASRs are a key variable influencing population demography, breeding systems, and many aspects of the behavior of birds. However, factors contributing to variation in ASRs, particularly for tropical species of birds, remain poorly understood. By compiling information from field sites and records from bird collections, we found that the ASRs of four species of Columbina ground doves from Venezuela deviated significantly from parity. Males of all species outnumbered females at all field sites and in all museum samples. ASR, expressed as the proportion of males, ranged from 0.59 for Common Ground Doves (Columbina passerina) to 0.65 for Plain‐breasted Ground Doves (Columbina minuta) in the overall samples. Males outnumbered females by ~ 44% in Common Ground Doves and by 85% in Plain‐breasted Ground Doves. Our samples included birds collected as specimens over many decades and across broad geographic areas, suggesting that skewed ASRs are characteristic of Venezuelan ground doves. Because these ground doves do not exhibit pronounced sexual size dimorphism and have socially monogamous breeding systems, selection would be expected to favor equal investment in males and females at hatching. As such, we argue that greater post‐hatching mortality of females, rather than deviations in the sex ratio of embryos, is the main cause of the biased ASRs of Venezuelan ground doves.  相似文献

The success of all insect societies relies on their ability to maintain optimal levels of different castes. Here we report on an apparent free-running circannual rhythm that optimizes the developmental time of the soldier caste of Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki. Over a 3 year period, bioassays were conducted each month (except June) with groups of 100 termite workers in a 28°C incubator in total darkness. The number of days needed for C. formosanus soldiers to develop varied depending on the time of the year (month). In March, just prior to the major swarming exodus for alates (April to June), 9 days were required before a worker molted to a presoldier. Longer times were required for such a molt in all other months, with an increasing trend from April to December (from 13 to 30 days) and a decreasing trend from January to February (from 25 to 12 days). Colony origin or the length of time that termites were kept in the laboratory under constant conditions (26 – 28°C, 70 – 80% RH) before testing (7 days – 1 year) did not affect this rhythm. This is the first demonstrated evidence of a free-running circannual rhythm in a social insect. Received 23 July 2007; revised 9 and 21 August 2007; accepted 23 August 2007.  相似文献

Abstract.
  • 1 Native Reticulitermes spp. Holmgren and the introduced Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae) were exposed to predation in the laboratory by Solenopsis invicta Buren (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), a known predator of Reticulitermes.
  • 2 In one experiment, both taxa contained the 2.4% soldiers commonly found in Reticulitermes. In a second experiment, Reticulitermes contained 2.4% and C.formosanus a more normal 18.3% soldiers.
  • 3 When soldier proportions were equal, C.formosanus soldiers suffered less of a decrease in survivorship due to predation compared with Reticulitermes soldiers. Little difference was found between taxa in the effect of predation on termite workers or in the effect of termites on predator survivorship.
  • 4 When soldier proportions were unequal, both C.formosanus castes suffered less from predation than those of Reticulitermes. Again, little difference was found in the effect of termites on ants.
  • 5 C.formosanus showed less movement into new containers when soldier number was abnormally low, compared with both taxa with normal caste proportions.

Skewed paternity and sex allocation in hermaphroditic plants and animals   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Models predict a reduced allocation to sperm when females preferentially use one of two males' sperm and the males do not know who is favoured. An analogous discounting occurs in plants when their paternity success is skewed by random, non-heritable factors such as location in the population and pollinator behaviour. We present a model that shows that skewed paternity can affect the sex allocation of hermaphrodites, that is it leads to a female-biased investment. The model highlights the close links between local mate competition and sperm competition. We use paternity data from Ficus in order to illustrate that skews in paternity success can lead to a high degree of sibling gamete competition in an apparently open breeding system. Since skews in paternity are ubiquitous in hermaphroditic plants and animals these findings should apply broadly.  相似文献

Hypotheses about the functions of the male genitalia and the male scape in insects were tested by measuring the slopes of allometric relations in six populations of Chauliognathus scutellaris. All allometric relations used elytron length as the indicator of overall body size. Male genitalia have lower slopes than male pronota (a structure not involved in reproduction), male scapes (secondary sexual characters) have higher slopes than male pronota, and female scapes have slopes that are not different from the slopes of female pronota. These results support Eberhard's one-size-fits-all hypothesis regarding the size of male genitalia in insects, and they raise questions about the role of the male scape in reproductive activities.  相似文献

Abstract 1. Hylaeus alcyoneus is an endemic solitary bee common on coastal heaths of Western Australia. The bee is unusual in that males are larger than females. This size dimorphism presents an opportunity to test the theory of resource-dependent sex allocation, in which theory predicts that when resources are low the sex ratio should be biased towards the smaller sex. In most bees, females are larger than males and, in line with theoretical prediction, sex ratios are male biased when resources are scarce.
2. The emerging sex ratio and brood mass from a natural population of H. alcyoneus using trap nests was studied over two seasons (1999, 2000). A switch from a male- to a female-biased sex ratio through the season was found, which was related to a reduced floral resource.
3. Fisherian sex ratio theory predicts that total investment in each sex throughout a season should be equal and that the sex ratio should be biased towards the smaller sex. By measuring the mass of the emerging progeny, the total investment was found to favour males. Possible explanations for this bias in investment are discussed.  相似文献

Closely related cellulolytic protozoa reside in the hindguts of extant woodroaches (Cryptocercidae) and termites (Isoptera). The evolutionary origin of these symbiotic relationships in the two lineages is uncertain. Transfer of protozoa between ancestors of modern Cryptocercus and termites remains a valid alternative theory to the established hypothesis of symbiont inheritance from a common ancestor. Nalepa's (Proc. R. Soc. Lond. B 246, 185 (1991] concerns regarding the protozoan transfer hypothesis focus on the biology of modern species, and neglect to consider the evolutionary framework of an ancestral dynamic postulated to occur among Palaeozoic insects. Legitimacy of the symbiont transfer theory removes the constraint of interpreting presence of cellulolytic protozoa as a synapomorphy between Cryptocercidae and Isoptera, with potential impact on objective resolution of dictyopteran phylogeny.  相似文献

The ratio of males to females in a population is known to influence the behaviour, life histories and demography of animals. A recent experimental study finds that sex ratio also affects human economic behaviour, and in a manner consistent with evolutionary theory.  相似文献
