Changes in proliferation and number of epithelial cells of the murine genital tract, during the oestrous cycle, have been studied. A total of 47 animals in the prooestrous, metoestrous and dioestrous phases of the cycle were staged retrospectively on the basis of the genital tract histology. The average duration of the oestrous cycle in these animals was 4 days, and half of this period was occupied by the prooestrous/oestrous phases. Significant cycles of growth were observed in the luminal uterine epithelium and in the basal epithelium of the cervix-vagina. Most of this growth occurred during the pro-oestrous phase, which lasted approximately 1 day. During this time the numbers of luminal epithelial cells in the uterus and suprabasal cells in the cervix-vagina increased 2-3 fold. This pattern of growth appeared partly synchronous and corresponded to the period when serum oestrogen levels are at their highest. A corresponding and rapid reduction in the numbers of uterine luminal epithelial cells and suprabasal cells in the cervix and vagina was noted during the early metoestrous phase; and this occured during the period when serum oestrogens are at their lowest levels. No significant periodicity in the proliferation and numbers of the uterine gland epithelial cells was noted during the cycle. The kinetic role and function of the gland cells is discussed in relation to these data.  相似文献

The distribution of interstitial collagen types I and III was studied by immunocytochemistry in the mesenchyme of progressing and regressing mesonephric and paramesonephric ducts of male and female rat fetuses from the age of 15 days until birth. Immunocytochemistry revealed a collagen-poor mesenchymal area around the genital ducts and in continuation with the coelomic epithelium on the lateral edge of the mesonephric ridge of 15-day-old fetuses. Ultrastructurally, collagen fibrils were accumulated along the continuous lamina densa of the mesonephric ducts, whereas they were absent on the medial side of the male and female paramesonephric ducts. In males, the amount of collagen fibrils increased with the histological maturation of the mesenchyme around the mesonephric duct, whereas around the regressing paramesonephric duct collagens disappeared from the basement membrane region and the surrounding mesenchyme of the 16-day-old male duct. After the completion of the paramesonephric regression, the mesenchyme acquired a uniformly collagen containing interstitial matrix. In females, the collagens increased in the mesenchyme around the progressing paramesonephric duct, and the original site of the regressing mesonephric duct became occupied with a collagen-containing mesenchyme by the age of 19 days. The results suggest a close structural linkage between the mesonephric duct and the established early paramesonephric duct. The differences in the developmental maturation of the periductal mesenchyme and the observed changes in the composition of the interstitial matrix probably reflect the functional differences in the regulatory factors acting on the progression and regression of the male and female genital ducts.  相似文献

The relative roles of geographical and non-geographical barriers in the genesis of genetic isolation are highly debated in evolutionary biology, yet knowing how speciation occurs is essential to our understanding of biodiversity. In the open ocean, differentiating between the two is particularly difficult, because of the high levels of gene flow found in pelagic communities. Here, we use molecular phylogenetics to test the hypothesis that geography is the primary isolating mechanism in a clade of pelagic nudibranchs, Glaucinae. Our results contradict allopatric expectations: the cosmopolitan Glaucus atlanticus is panmictic, whereas the Indo-Pacific Glaucus marginatus contains two pairs of cryptic species with overlapping distributions. Within the G. marginatus species complex, a parallel reproductive change has occurred in each cryptic species pair: the loss of a bursa copulatrix. Available G. marginatus data are most consistent with non-geographical speciation events, but we cannot rule out the possibility of allopatric speciation, followed by iterative range extension and secondary overlap. Irrespective of ancestral range distributions, our results implicate a central role for reproductive character differentiation in glaucinin speciation—a novel result in a planktonic system.  相似文献

Vaginal carriage rates of group B streptococci among 250 women attending a clinic for sexually transmitted diseases, 123 attending family planning clinics, and 110 in labour wages were 36.0%, 17-1% and 6.4% respectively. The presence of group B streptococci was not associated with a vaginal discharge or the use of oral contraceptives in the non-pregnant women, or with the isolation of Neisseria gonorrhoeae or Trichomonas vaginalis from the women attending the clinic for sexually transmitted diseases. Serotyping showed a predominance of types II and III in non-pregnant women and an overall incidence of non-typable strains of 14.8%. There was no relationship between serotype and antibacterial susceptibility.  相似文献

The various male genital organs of the experimental animals used in this investigation (rat, guinea pig, rabbit, cat and dog) showed a widely different localizations of alkaline and acid phosphatases. Alkaline phosphatase was presented as secretory, stromal, nuclear and vascular, while with acid phosphatase, distinction was made only between secretory and nuclear phosphatases. Although the morphological distributions of both enzymes were sometimes overlapping, they were not identical.  相似文献
