Pitfall trapping is one of the most commonly used methods to survey surface-active invertebrates, but has many potential biases that may affect the catch of invertebrates. The distance between pitfall traps (inter-trap spacing) is one such factor. The abundance, richness and composition of invertebrate orders, and species of ants and beetles was examined for three commonly used inter-trap spacings (1, 5, 10m) in a grassy-woodland ecosystem in Victoria, Australia. Abundance and composition was not significantly different between treatments for any taxa. A significant difference in richness between treatments was found only for beetles. The 5 and 10m treatments had a significantly higher number of beetle morphospecies than the 1m treatment. Knowledge of such biases, and how subtle variations in trap design affect efficiency, is important for designing invertebrate surveys.  相似文献

Few studies have evaluated the efficiency of methods for sampling ants, especially in regions with highly variable vegetation physiognomies such as the Cerrado region of central Brazil. Here we compared three methods to collect ground-dwelling ants: pitfall traps, sardine baits, and the Winkler litter extractor. Our aim was to determine which method would be most appropriate to characterize the ant assemblages inhabiting different vegetation types. More species were collected with pitfall traps and with the Winkler extractor than with sardine baits. Pitfall traps collected more species in the cerrado (savanna) physiognomies, particularly in those with a poor litter cover, whereas the Winlker extractor was more efficient in the forest physiognomies, except the one subject to periodic inundations. There was a low similarity in species composition between forest and cerrado physiognomies, and this pattern was detected regardless of the method used to sampling ants. Therefore, even the use of a single, relatively selective method of collection can be enough for studies comparing highly distinct habitats and/or conditions. However, if the purpose of the sampling is to produce a more thoroughly inventory of the ant fauna, we suggest the use of a combination of methods, particularly pitfall traps and the Winkler extractor. Therefore, the Ants of the Leaf-Litter (ALL) Sampling Protocol appear to be an adequate protocol for sampling ants in the highly-threatened Brazilian cerrado biome.  相似文献

A comparison of pitfall traps with bait traps for sampling leaf litter ants was studied in oak-dominated mixed forests during 1995-1997. A total of 31,732 ants were collected from pitfall traps and 54,694 ants were collected from bait traps. They belonged to four subfamilies, 17 genera, and 32 species. Bait traps caught 29 species, whereas pitfall traps caught 31 species. Bait traps attracted one species not found in pitfall traps, but missed three of the species collected with pitfall traps. Collections from the two sampling methods showed differences in species richness, relative abundance, diversity, and species accumulation curves. Pitfall traps caught significantly more ant species per plot than did bait traps. The ant species diversity obtained from pitfall traps was higher than that from bait traps. Bait traps took a much longer time to complete an estimate of species richness than did pitfall traps. Little information was added to pitfall trapping results by the bait trapping method. The results suggested that the pitfall trapping method is superior to the bait trapping method for leaf litter ant studies. Species accumulation curves showed that sampling of 2,192+/-532 ants from six plots by pitfall traps provided a good estimation of ant species richness under the conditions of this study.  相似文献

Pitfall trapping is a sampling technique extensively used to sample surface foraging invertebrates for biological diversity studies and ecological monitoring. To date, very few invertebrate studies have considered what trap size is optimal for sampling spiders. This study presents preliminary findings from a single short sampling period on the role of trap size in sampling spiders in a Western Australian Jarrah forest. Four different trap diameters (4.3, 7.0, 11.1 and 17.4 cm) were examined (4 trap sizes × 15 replicates = 60 traps). Two-way ANOVAs revealed no significant interaction effects between trap size or the spatial positioning of transects within the study site along which the pitfall traps were arranged. Post-hoc tests revealed abundance, family richness and species richness increased with increasing trap sizes for traps 7.0 cm. No significant differences in these dependent variables occurred between 4.3 and 7.0 cm traps, or for species richness between 11.1 and 17.4 cm traps. Determination of an optimal trap size was undertaken by bootstrapping and calculating species accumulation curves for increasing numbers of traps used. Three different criteria were considered: equivalent number of traps (15), standardized sampling intensity (cumulative trap circumference, approximately 207 cm) and standardized cumulative handling time (approximately 1 hour 17 minutes). The largest trap size (17.4 cm) was most efficient in terms of number of traps and trap circumference. For the same number of traps, it caught 19 species whereas all other trap sizes caught ten species. At the standardized circumference, it caught seven species whereas all other trap sizes caught five. For handling time, however, the two largest trap sizes (17.4 and 11.1 cm) were optimal. The purpose of this experiment was to determine if tolerance to exercise in the heat is related to maximal oxygen uptake (max 02) and sweating. Seven men with max 02 between 42 and 66 ml/(min·kg) underwent one 2-hr exposure at 24°C Tq while working on a bicycle ergometer at rel 02 of 28% ( 02 = 1.23 1/min). In the hot exposures the high capacity subjects had maximal sweat rates of 800 to 1,000 g/(hr·m2) while the lower capacity men sweated 300 to 400 g/(hr·m2). These differences in sweating were not related to neuromuscular stimuli, 02 (metabolic rate), Tre, Tre, s, s or tolerance time. Tolerance to exercise in the heat was not related to maximal 02 capacity when the subjects worked at the same relative load in spite of large differences in sweating. These results question the importance of the rate of sweating for predicting work performance in hot environments.
Zusammenfassung Das Ziel dieser Untersuchung war, zu prüfen, ob die Toleranz bei Arbeit in der Hitze in einer Beziehung steht zur maximalen O2-Aufnahme und Schwitzen. Sieben Männer mit V02 zwischen 42 – 66 ml/(min·kg) wurden belastet während 2 Stunden bei Ta 24°C und 3 × 2 Stunden bei 47°C mit Arbeit auf dem Fahrrad-Ergometer bei im Mittel von 28% V02 = 1.23 1/min. Während der Hitzebelastung zeigten die leistungsfähigen Personen Schweissekretionsraten von 800 – 1000 g/(hr·m2) und die wenig leistungsfähigen 300 – 400 g/(hr·m2). Diese Unterschiede waren ohne Beziehung zu neuromuskulären Stimuli, Stoffwechselrate, Tre, Tre, s, s oder der Toleranzzeit. Ausdauer bei Arbeit in der Hitze war ohne Beziehung zur maximalen V02-Kapazität, wenn die Personen bei der gleichen relativen Belastung arbeiteten tro grosser Unterschiede im Schwitzen. Die Ergebnisse stellen den Wert der Schweissekretionsrate zur Voraussage der Arbeitsleistung in der Hitze in Frage.

Resume Dans cette étude, on a cherché à voir si la tolérance au travail sous contrainte de chaleur était en relation avec la possibilité maximum d'absorption de O2 ( 02) d'une part, de transpirer d'autre part. 7 hommes présentant des 02 compris entre 42 et 66 ml/(min · kg) ont pédalé sur un ergomètre pendant 2 heures par une Ta de 24°C et 3 × 2 heures par 47°C et cela par une 02 relative de 28% ( 02 = 1,25 1/min). Durant l'effort sous contrainte de chaleur, les plus actifs ont eu des sécrétions de sueur de 800 à 1.000 g h–1 m–2 et les moins actifs de 300 à 400 g/h · m2. Ces différences étaient sans rapport avec les stimulus neuro-musculaires, le taux de métabolisme, Tre, Tre, Ts et Ts ou la durée de tolérance. L'endurance au travail sous contrainte de chaleur n'a pas été fonction de la capacité maximum de 02, lorsque les personnes travaillaient dans des conditions analogues, même si l'on a noté de grandes différences dans la transpiration. Ces résultats mettent en doute la représentativité du taux de sécrétion de sueur comme indicatif des possibilités de travailler en atmosphère chaude.

The absolute volume of biological objects is often estimated stereologically from an exhaustive set of systematic sections. The usual volume estimator is the sum of the section contents times the distance between sections. For systematic sectioning with a random start, it has been recently shown that is unbiased when m, the ratio between projected object length and section distance, is an integer number (Cruz-Orive 1985). As this quantity is no integer in the real world, we have explored the properties of in the general and realistic situation m . The unbiasedness of under appropriate sampling conditions is demonstrated for the arbitrary compact set in 3 dimensions by a rigorous proof. Exploration of further properties of for the general triaxial ellipsoid leads to a new class of non-elementary real functions with common formal structure which we denote as np-functions. The relative mean square error (CE 2) of in ellipsoids is an oscillating differentiable np-function, which reduces to the known result CE 2= 1/(5m 4) for integer m. As a biological example the absolute volumes of 10 left cardiac ventricles and their internal cavities were estimated from systematic sections. Monte Carlo simulation of replicated systematic sectioning is shown to be improved by using m instead of m . In agreement with the geometric model of ellipsoids with some added shape irregularities, mean empirical CE was proportional to m –1.36 and m–1.73 in the cardiac ventricle and its cavity. The considerable variance reduction by systematic sectioning is shown to be a geometric realization of the principle of antithetic variates.  相似文献

Pitfall trapping is the standard technique to estimate activity and relative abundance of leaf litter arthropods. Pitfall trapping is not ideal for long‐term sampling because it is lethal, labor‐intensive, and may have taxonomic sampling biases. We test an alternative sampling method that can be left in place for several months at a time: verticallyplaced time‐lapse camera traps that have a short focal distance, enabling identification of small arthropods. We tested the effectiveness of these time‐lapse cameras, and quantified escape and avoidance behavior of arthropod orders encountering pitfall traps by placing cameras programed with a range of sampling intervals above pitfalls, to assess numerical, taxonomic, and body size differences in samples collected by the two methods. Cameras programed with 1‐ or 15‐min intervals recorded around twice as many arthropod taxa per day and a third more individuals per day than pitfall traps. Hymenoptera (ants), Embioptera (webspinners), and Blattodea (cockroaches) frequently escaped from pitfalls so were particularly under‐sampled by them. The time‐lapse camera method effectively samples litter arthropods to collect long‐term data. It is standardized, non‐lethal, and does not alter the substrate or require frequent visits.  相似文献

A long-term field experiment was initiated to simulate chronic atmospheric N deposition, a widespread phenomenon in industrial regions of the world. Eight years of experimental nitrate ( ) additions (3 g -N m–2 per year) to four different northern hardwood forests located along a 500 km geographic gradient dramatically increased leaching losses of -N, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and dissolved organic nitrogen (DON). During the last two water years, the average increase in solution -N and DON leaching from the -amended plots was 2.2 g N m–2, equivalent to 72% of the annual experimental N addition. Results indicate that atmospheric N deposition may rapidly saturate some northern hardwood ecosystems across an entire biome in the upper Great Lakes Region of the USA. Changes in soil C and N cycling induced by chronic N deposition have the potential in this landscape to significantly alter the flux of DOC and DON from upland to aquatic ecosystems. The and the Gp have been measured in whole cells ofMethylophilus methylotrophus during the oxidation of various respiratory chain substrates. The magnitude of the depended on the external pH and the composition of the assay medium, and varied from-109 to-165 mV. The relative contributions of the and the pH to the were found to vary with the external pH such that the internal pH remained constant; depending on the composition of the assay medium, this value was between 6.6 and 7.0. A Gp of approximately-46 kJ/mol was generated during the oxidation of methanol, and either the or pH alone was fully competent to drive ATP synthesis. Respiration and ATP synthesis were found to be poised far from equilibrium under the conditions of these experiments, and the value of the Gp was thus controlled kinetically. Summary The hydrodynamics and mass transfer behaviour of an airlift fermentor with an external loop (height 10m) has been investigated by measuring gas and liquid velocities, gas hold-up, liquid mixing and oxygen transfer coefficients. Liquid phase properties, i.e., ionic strength, viscosity and surface tension have been varied by altering the fermentation media. Results are compared with those from bubble column experiments performed in the same unit. The present paper describes growth dynamics in a natural bed of the resource luga negra (Sarcothalia crispata) in Guapilinao, southern Chile (41°57 S, 73°31 W). This resource is currently harvested and exported as raw material for the production of carrageenan. Seasonal variation in biomass, frond size, density and phenology was determined by periodic sampling. Natural recruitment was evaluated on different substrata added to the field; at the same time, substrata were inoculated under greenhouse conditions. Results showed that luga negra has seasonal growth: biomass increased from a minimum in spring to a maximum in mid to late summer. On the other hand, density was minimal in winter (200 ind. m–2) and increased to 2000 ind. m–2 in late spring. Peak abundance of mature tetrasporic fronds occurred in late summer, whereas that of cystocarpic fronds occurred in winter. Recruitment began in summer and extended into winter. Survival on different substrata were compared. Gametophytes had better survival rates on clam shells and 5 mm rope while tetrasporophytes had the best survival rate on clam shells and secondarily on boulders.  相似文献

A method is presented for the evaluation of sensors used in the control of continuous fermentations. Simulations of open-loop response to input disturbance provided a starting point for the choice of sensor type. This was evaluated quantitatively through a sensitivity ratio. It was shown that in the case of ethanol fermentation, there existed three regions where different sensors could be used for the process control depending on the inlet sugar concentration. Sugar sensors were preferable above an inlet sugar concentration of 50 kg/m3, while ethanol sensors were preferable below 25 kg/m3. In the intermediate region, sugar and ethanol sensors demonstrated equally good performance. A controllability study of a continuous ethanol fermentation was also made. A single-stage continuous stirred-tank fermentor was simulated operating at a dilution rate of 0.1 1/h and inlet glucose concentration of 160 kg/m3. The outlet glucose concentration was controlled with a PI controller. Mean square error of the controller input signal during the first five hours after introducing input disturbance was taken as a measure of the controllability. Summary A special temperature control system has been developed and applied to continuous measuring of the heat evolved during a fermentation process. In this system, the fermentation broth was overcooled by a given constant cooling water flow. The excess heat removed from the fermentor was then made up by an immersion electrical heater. The action of the temperature controller was precisely monitored as it varied in response to the amount of heat produced by the microbial activities.The technique was used for determining the heat evolution byEscherichia coli grown on glucose. Summary Control of extracellular acid-base status was examined during activity and dormancy inOtala lactea (Pulmonata, Helicidae). Active snails showed little variation in hemolymph pH and at constant temperature. With increase of temperature, hemolymph increased from about 6 Torr at 5°C to 13 Torr at 24°C and pH decreased by about 0.017 pH units/°C, a pattern consistent with alphastat regulation of pH via ventilatory control of .During dormancy, mean hemolymph increased to about 50 Torr. Venous pH declined by about 0.4 units due to hypercapnia and fluctuated more widely than in active snails due to variability of . Hemolymph pH declined further in prolonged dormancy due to progressive metabolic acidosis; after one year of dormancy the mean hemolymph pH was about 0.8 units lower than that of active snails at similar temperature.Active snails exposed experimentally to high showed a large increase in hemolymph [HCO 3 ]. However, [HCO 3 ] declined by up to 50% during dormancy, despite the naturally occurring hypercapnia. Hemolymph osmolality and the concentrations of solutes other than [HCO 3 ] increased with increasing duration of dormancy. Concentrations of magnesium and calcium increased about 2.5 times more rapidly than those of sodium and chloride, indicating that acidosis is partially offset by the dissolution of carbonates from the shell or tissues.  相似文献

The possibility of solving the mass balances to a multiplicity of substrates within a CSTR in the presence of a chemical reaction following Michaelis-Menten kinetics using the assumption that the discrete distribution of said substrates is well approximated by an equivalent continuous distribution on the molecular weight is explored. The applicability of such reasoning is tested with a convenient numerical example. In addition to providing the limiting behavior of the discrete formulation as the number of homologous substrates increases, the continuous formulation yields in general simpler functional forms for the final distribution of substrates than the discrete counterpart due to the recursive nature of the solution in the latter case.List of Symbols C{N. Two fluorescent dyes, anilinonaphthalene sulfonate (ANS) and 9-aminoacridine (9AA) were used as probes for measuring the membrane potential () and pH difference across the membrane ( pH), respectively.In the presence of Tris buffer the maximal and no pH were produced, while in the presence of the permeant anion NO 3 the maximal pH and a low were produced by the addition of ATP. When the ATP concentration was 0.24mm, the was 140–150 mV (positive inside) in Tris buffer, and the pH was 2.9–3.5 units (acidic inside) in the presence of NO 3 . Addition of a saturating amount of ATP produced somewhat larger and pH values, and the attained was about 310 mV.By trapping pH indicators in the vesicles during their reconstitution it was found that the pH inside the vesicles was pH 4–5 during ATP hydrolysis.The effects of energy transfer inhibitors, uncouplers, ionophores, and permeant anions on these vesicles were studied.  相似文献

A small catchment on the Swedish West Coast has been studied over four years to determine S dynamics by using S isotope ratios. A Norway spruce dominated forest covers the catchment, and small peat areas occur in the lower parts of the catchment. The runoff values varied both during the year, and from year to year. Over the period from February 1990 to December 1993, the values ranged from — 1%. to +11%. Over the same period, the throughfall values ranged from +1%. to +15%. There was no correlation (r 2= 0.01; Pr(F)=0.57) between values in throughfall and runoff. Since the only input of S to the catchment is atmospheric deposition, the long-term runoff S mass flux is controlled by the deposition. Therefore, processes in the catchment are responsible for the variation in the runoff values. During periods with enriched runoff, bacterial dissimilatory SO 4 2– reduction occurs in the catchment. After very dry periods, oxidation of this reduced S, which is32S-enriched, can be traced in runoff. Previous studies of the catchment have not been able to distinguish between: 1) oxidation of reduced S and dry deposition, and 2) reduction and adsorption. From the current study, it can be concluded that adsorption and dry deposition cannot cause the observed variation in runoff .  相似文献

Summary Linkage data, using the polymorphic markers 52A (DXS51), F9, 4D-8(DXS98), and St14(DXS52), are presented from 14 fragile X pedigrees and from 7 normal pedigrees derived from the collection of the Centre d'Étude du Polymorphisme Humaine. A multipoint linkage analysis indicates that the most probable order of these four loci in normal families is DXS51-F9-DXS98-DXS52. Recombination frequencies ( ) corresponding to maximum LOD scores ( ) were obtained by two-point linkage analysis for a nuber of linkage groups, including: DXS51-F9 ( =5.94, =0.03), F9-DXS98 ( =0.51, =0.26), F9-DXS52 ( =0.84, =0.27), and DXS98-DXS52 ( =0.32, =0.20). A multipoint linkage analysis of these loci, including the fragile X locus, was also performed for the fragile X population and the data support the relative order (DSX51, F9, DXS98)-FRAXA-DXS52. Recombination frequencies and maximum LOD scores, which again were derived from two-point linkage analyses, were obtained for the linkage groups DXS51-F9 ( =9.96, =0) and F9-DXS52 ( =0.07, =0.45), as well as for the groups DXS51-FRAXA ( =2.42, =0.15), F9-FRAXA ( =1.30, =0.18), DXS98-FRAXA ( =0.05 =0.36), and DXS52-FRAXA ( =2.42 =0.15). The linkage data was further tested for the presence of genetic heterogeneity both within and between the fragile X and normal families for the intervals DXS51-F9, F9-DXS52, F9-FRAXA, and DXS52-FRAXA using a modification of the A test. Except for the interval F9-FRAXA (P<0.10) there was no evidence of genetic heterogeneity for each of the various linkage groups examined. The heterogeneity detected for the interval F9-FRAXA, however, was most likely due to one family (Fx-28) that displayed very tight linkage between these two loci.  相似文献

In the aquatic liverwort Riccia fluitans, membrane depolarization (m), change in membrane conductance (gm), and current-voltage (I-V) characteristics in the presence of different amino acids as well as the uptake of 14C-labeled amino acids were measured. L-isomers of the tested amino acids generate larger electrical effects (m, gm) than D-isomers, and the I-V characteristics show that the positive electrical inward-current of 20 mA m-2 generated by 0.5 mM D-serine is only about 50% of the current generated by adding 0.5 mM L-serine. Whereas - and -amino acids rapidly depolarize the membrane to the same extend, with -aminobutyric acid (-AB) and dipeptides no significant electrical effects have been measured. The uptake kinetics of 14C-labeled amino acids display three components: (I) A saturable high-affinity component with Ks-values of 48 M D-alanine, 12 M -aminoisobutyric acid (AIB), 9 M L-alanine, 8 M L-proline, and 6 M L-serine, respectively; (2) an apparently linear low-affinity component, and (3) an also linear but unspecific component at concentrations >20 times the given Ks-value. Uptake of 14C-labeled AIB can be inhibited competitively by all tested neutral amino acids, the L-isomers being more effective than the D-isomers, as well as by ammonium or methylamine. Vice versa, AIB competitively inhibits uptake of L-serine and L-alanine. It is concluded that an uncharged stereospecific carrier for the investigated amino acids exists in the plasmalemma of Riccia fluitans. Accumulation ratios of about 50 suggest secondary active transport driven by a transmembrane electro-chemical gradient (mainly m) which is generated by the electrogenic proton pump.
