Purpose

Renewable energies are promoted in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the depletion of fossil fuels. However, plants for renewable electricity production incorporate specifically higher amounts of materials being rated as potentially scarce. Therefore, it is in question which (mineral) resources contribute to the overall resource consumption and which of the manifold impact assessment methods can be recommended to cover an accurate and complete investigation of resource use for renewable energy technologies.

Methods

Life cycle assessment is conducted for different renewable electricity production technologies (wind, photovoltaics, and biomass) under German conditions and compared to fossil electricity generation from a coal-fired power plant. Focus is given on mineral resource depletion for these technologies. As no consensus has been reached so far as to which impact assessment method is recommended, different established as well as recently developed impact assessment methods (CML, ReCiPe, Swiss Ecoscarcity, and economic scarcity potential (ESP)) are compared. The contribution of mineral resources to the overall resource depletion as well as potential scarcity are identified.

Results and discussion

Overall resource depletion of electricity generation technologies tends to be dominated by fossil fuel depletion; therefore, most renewable technologies reduce the overall resource depletion compared to a coal-fired power plant. But, in comparison to fossil electricity generation from coal, mineral resource depletion is increased by wind and solar power. The investigated methods rate different materials as major contributors to mineral resource depletion, such as gallium used in photovoltaic plants (Swiss Ecoscarcity), gold and copper incorporated in electrical circuits and in cables (CML and ReCiPe), and nickel (Swiss Ecoscarcity and ReCiPe) and chromium (ESP) for stainless steel production. However, some methods lack characterization factors for potentially important materials.

Conclusions

If mineral resource use is investigated for technologies using a wider spectrum of potentially scarce minerals, practitioners need to choose the impact assessment method carefully according to their scope and check if all important materials are covered. Further research is needed for an overall assessment of different resource compartments.

In this paper, we investigate the abnormalities of electroencephalograph (EEG) signals in the Alzheimer’s disease (AD) by analyzing 16-scalp electrodes EEG signals and make a comparison with the normal controls. The power spectral density (PSD) which represents the power distribution of EEG series in the frequency domain is used to evaluate the abnormalities of AD brain. Spectrum analysis based on autoregressive Burg method shows that the relative PSD of AD group is increased in the theta frequency band while significantly reduced in the alpha2 frequency bands, particularly in parietal, temporal, and occipital areas. Furthermore, the coherence of two EEG series among different electrodes is analyzed in the alpha2 frequency band. It is demonstrated that the pair-wise coherence between different brain areas in AD group are remarkably decreased. Interestingly, this decrease of pair-wise electrodes is much more significant in inter-hemispheric areas than that in intra-hemispheric areas. Moreover, the linear cortico-cortical functional connectivity can be extracted based on coherence matrix, from which it is shown that the functional connections are obviously decreased, the same variation trend as relative PSD. In addition, we combine both features of the relative PSD and the normalized degree of functional network to discriminate AD patients from the normal controls by applying a support vector machine model in the alpha2 frequency band. It is indicated that the two groups can be clearly classified by the combined feature. Importantly, the accuracy of the classification is higher than that of any one feature. The obtained results show that analysis of PSD and coherence-based functional network can be taken as a potential comprehensive measure to distinguish AD patients from the normal, which may benefit our understanding of the disease.  相似文献

Basidiomycetes are used in industrial processes, in basic or applied research, teaching, systematic and biodiversity studies. Efficient work with basidiomycete cultures requires their reliable source, which is ensured by their safe long-term storage. Repeated subculturing, frequently used for the preservation, is time-consuming, prone to contamination, and does not prevent genetic and physiological changes during long-term maintenance. Various storage methods have been developed in order to eliminate these disadvantages. Besides lyophilization (unsuitable for the majority of basidiomycetes), cryopreservation at low temperatures seems to be a very efficient way to attain this goal. Besides survival, another requirement for successful maintenance of fungal strains is the ability to preserve their features unchanged. An ideal method has not been created so far. Therefore it is highly desirable to develop new or improve the current preservation methods, combining advantages and eliminate disadvantages of individual techniques. Many reviews on preservation of microorganisms including basidiomycetes have been published, but the progress in the field requires an update. Although herbaria specimens of fungi (and of basidiomycetes in particular) are very important for taxonomic and especially typological studies, this review is limited to live fungal cultures.  相似文献

Infrared thermoimaging is one of the options for object temperature analysis. Infrared thermoimaging is unique due to the non-contact principle of measurement. So it is often used in medicine and for scientific experimental measurements. The presented work aims to determine whether the measurement results could be influenced by topical treatment of the hand surface by various substances. The authors attempted to determine whether the emissivity can be neglected or not in situations of topical application of substances such as ultrasound gel, ointment, disinfection, etc. The results of experiments showed that the value of surface temperature is more or less distorted by the topically applied substance. Our findings demonstrate the effect of emissivity of applied substances on resulting temperature and showed the necessity to integrate the emissivity into calculation of the final surface temperature. Infrared thermoimaging can be an appropriate method for determining the temperature of organisms, if this is understood as the surface temperature, and the surrounding environment and its temperature is taken into account.  相似文献

A recurring question in the study of fish biomechanics and energeticsis the mechanical power required for tail-swimming at the highspeeds seen among aquatic vertebrates. The quest for answershas been driven by conceptual advances in fluid dynamics, startingwith ideas on the boundary layer and drag initiated by Prandtl,and in measurement techniques starting with force balances focussingon drag and thrust. Drag (=thrust) from measurements on physicalmodels, carcasses, kinematics as inputs to hydromechanical models,and physiological power sources vary from less than that expectedfor an equivalent rigid reference to over an order of magnitudegreater. Estimates of drag and thrust using recent advanceslargely made possible by increased computing power have notresolved the discrepancy. Sources of drag and thrust are notseparable in axial undulatory self propulsion, are open to interpretationand Froude efficiency is zero. Wakes are not easily interpreted,especially for thrust evaluation. We suggest the best measuresof swimming performance are velocity and power consumption forwhich 2D inviscid simulations can give realistic predictions.Steady swimming power is several times that required for towingan equivalent flat plate at the same speed.  相似文献

Informative capacity analysis of immunohistochemistry (IHC) and flow cytometry (FCM) in the assessment of estrogen receptor α (ERα) expression in breast cancer tissue was performed. Similar frequencies of expression were shown by both methods: 27% of ERα-negative and 73% ERα-positive cases. However, IHC evaluation detected low levels in only 20% of ERα-positive cases, whereas low levels of ERα detected by FCM were 2 times more often (48%). Moreover, FCM revealed positive expression (23–60%) in 33% of IHC ERα-negative cases. Among IHC ER-positive cases, zero ERα expression was detected by FCM in 12.5%. The approaches to minimize errors in routine clinical determination of the estrogen receptor status were proposed.  相似文献

Given that surgical castration is a painful practice performed on millions of pigs every year, a need to identify novel reliable pain assessment tools exists in order to test anaesthetic and analgesic protocols that may reduce related pain. Two treatments were considered: handling (H) and surgical castration (C). Physiological (cortisol, lactate, glycaemia, rectal and eye temperature) and behavioural variables (latency to move after treatment and alterations in posture and walking) were analysed. Cortisol showed the greatest level in C piglets within 20 min after the surgical procedure and a positive correlation with glucose concentration. Eye temperature was higher in C piglets, and the same difference was detected for rectal temperature 3 h after castration. Behavioural parameters revealed that C piglets had longer latency to move and a higher percentage of them showed alterations in posture and walking. Results of this study showed that, in castrated piglets behavioural and physiological alterations occur mainly in the first 3 h from treatment. Latency to move, alterations in posture and walking, and eye temperature appear to give additional and useful information in piglet pain assessment. However, differently from the behavioural parameters considered, eye temperature involves several manipulations of the animals and a long process to acquire the data.  相似文献

There has been an increased interest in utilizing renewable energy sources in district heating systems. District heating systems are centralized systems that provide heat for residential and commercial buildings in a community. While various renewable and conventional energy sources can be used in such systems, many stakeholders are interested in choosing the feasible option with the least environmental impacts. This paper evaluates and compares environmental burdens of alternative energy source options for the base–load of a district heating center in Vancouver, British Columbia (BC) using the life cycle assessment method. The EU-funded STAR-project provided an opportunity to analyse 1418 macroinvertebrate samples from 310 sampling sites throughout Europe. At most of the sites, samples were taken in two seasons using both national protocols and the project’s STAR-AQEM protocol. At a subset of sites (86), two replicate samples were taken by each method in each of the two seasons. The resulting taxalists were analysed in terms of community similarity using the Bray–Curtis Index, Jaccard, and Renkonen Indices. A new concept of sample ‘coherence’ is used to measure the relative strength of within-site, within-season and within-method similarity and to determine their importance on variability in community composition. Site-coherence (i.e., highest similarity to another sample from the same site) was much higher where replicate samples were available. Season-coherence of samples was nearly 100% even if different methods were compared. Season appeared to be one of the major determinants of in-stream fauna. The STAR-AQEM method is most comparable to the Nordic, Portuguese and Czech (PERLA) national methods and less comparable to the Italian (IBE) and Latvian methods. Samples collected by these latter methods had higher similarities to other sites sampled with the same methods than to samples of the same site using the STAR-AQEM method, thus there was low site-coherence. In three stream types from Italy, Latvia and Greece 28–38% of the samples were most similar to a sample from a different site than to a replicate sample from the same site. This fact could have serious consequences for follow up bioassessments or impact assessments by cluster analysis based on similarity measures. Replicate samples are less coherent within site, season or method if the taxonomic resolution is family rather than species. Environmental policy and in particular the European water legislation, in the framework of the EU Groundwater Directive, has started to consider groundwater not only as a resource but as a living ecosystem. A precondition for comprehensive groundwater protection is thus the assessment of the biological and ecological state. The assessment of ecosystems requires consideration of ecological criteria, which so far are not available for groundwater systems. In the framework of a national project, the German Federal Environment Agency (UBA) supports a consortium of scientists and stakeholders from water boards and regional environmental authorities to develop a first concept for an ecological assessment scheme for groundwater ecosystems. The attempts towards an integrative concept include the following steps: (i) selection of appropriate biological and ecological parameters, (ii) typology of groundwater ecosystems, (iii) derivation of a reference status (Leitbild) and natural background values for biological variables, (iv) identification of potential bioindicators and definition of threshold values, and (v) development of an assessment model. These proposed steps are discussed on the basis of a data set from two groundwater landscapes in Southern Germany. Investigations considered three different spatial units, i.e. the habitat unit at the local scale, and the aquifer type unit as well as the landscape unit at the regional scale. Fauna as well as bacterial communities could provide valuable ecological information on the ecosystems status. The paper reviews ‘state of the art’ knowledge and evaluates the near future perspectives for the development and implementation of groundwater ecosystems assessment programmes.  相似文献

International forest policies have recently increased the focus on involvement of local communities in forest monitoring and management as a strategy to improve biodiversity conservation efforts and local livelihood in developing countries. However, little is known about feasible methods, costs and accuracy of participatory monitoring schemes in developing countries. This paper examines the costs, accuracy and local reproducibility of three simple cost–effective methods for monitoring forest disturbance by local participants: (1) 20-trees method, (2) Bitterlich gauge method and (3) Disturbance Checklist transect. Using one of these methods the costs of monitoring forest habitats are only between US$ 0.04 and 0.12 ha−1 annually, depending on the methods used, this is significantly cheaper than the costs of traditional scientific methods for biodiversity monitoring. Results indicate that local community members without former scientific training can collect accurate data on habitat loss and forest disturbance after only a few days of introduction to the methods, and thereby contribute with valuable information for natural resource management. The strengths and weaknesses of monitoring done, respectively, by local community members and educated biologists, respectfully, are discussed. It is suggested that these approaches should be seen as supplements to each other rather than substitutes. Finally, it is argued that monitoring schemes in developing countries can be sustained after donor funds have ceased only if the local communities play a central role and clear financially and/or socially incentives for members of the local community are incorporated.  相似文献

Phycobilins are an important group of pigments that through complementary chromatic adaptation optimize the light-harvesting process in phytoplankton cells, exhibiting great potential as cyanobacteria species biomarkers. In their extracted form, concentrations of these water-soluble molecules are not easily determined using the chromatographic methods well suited to solvent-soluble pigments. Insights regarding the quantitative spectroscopic analysis of extracted phycobilins also remain limited. Here, we present an in-depth study of two methods that utilize the spectral properties of phycobilins in aqueous extracts. The technical work was carried out using high-purity standards of phycocyanin, phycoerythrin, and allophycocyanin. Calibration parameters for the spectrofluorometer and spectrophotometer were established. This analysis indicated the possibility of detecting pigments in concentrations ranging from 0.001 to 10 μg cm?3. Fluorescence data revealed a reproducibility of 95 %. The differences in detection limits between the two methods enable the presence of phycobilins to be investigated and their amounts to be monitored from oligotrophic to eutrophic aquatic environments.  相似文献

Using the cell-pressure probe the possibility of symplastic water flow between cells of the upper epidermis of barley leaves was investigated. Cells analysed had either an intact or a more or less damaged cellular environment. Cell damage caused large pressure differentials (0·9 MPa) between damaged and adjacent intact cells. Turgor in cells adjacent to damaged cells decreased significantly. Turgor decreases were the larger the more the adjacent, damaged cell was leaking (decreases by 2·5–4·4%). In cells surrounded by a patch of leaking cells, turgor decreased the most, by 18·1–20·4%. In contrast, half-times of water exchange (T1/2) of cells were not affected by a damaged cellular environment. Assuming that in the barley leaf epidermis, plasmodesmata close at pressure-differentials at or exceeding 0·2 MPa as shown for other plant cells (The Plant Journal 2, 741–750; Canadian Journal of Botany 65, 509–511), it is concluded that symplastic water flow contributes insignificantly to water exchange between cells. Mechanical damage to one individual cell is enough to induce significant turgor changes in neighbouring cells.  相似文献

At the excitatory synapse of rat hippocampus the short-term synaptic depression observed during long high-frequency stimulation is associated with slower replenishment of the readily-releasable pool. Given that the replenishment rate is also not [Ca++]o sensitive this puts into question a widely held notion that the vesicles—constrained by the cytoskeleton and rendered free from such constraints by Ca++ entry that renders them more mobile—are important in the replenishment of the readily-releasable pool. This raises a question—Is vesicular replenishment of the readily releasable pool associated with significant movement? To answer this question we evaluated how okadaic acid and staurosporine (compounds known to affect vesicular mobility) influence the replenishment rate. We used patterned stimulation on the Schaffer collateral fiber pathway and recorded the excitatory post-synaptic currents (EPSCs) from rat CA1 neurons, in the absence and presence of these drugs. The parameters of a circuit model with two vesicular pools were estimated by minimizing the squared difference between the ESPC amplitudes and simulated model output. [Ca2+]o did not influence the progressive decrease of the replenishment rate during long, high frequency stimulation. Okadaic acid did not significantly affect any parameters of the vesicular storage and release system, including the replenishment rate. Staurosporine reduced the replenishment coupling, but not the replenishment rate, and this is owing to the fact that it also reduces the ability of the readily releasable pool to contain quanta. Moreover, these compounds were ineffective in influencing how the replenishment rate decreases during long, high frequency stimulation. In conclusion at the excitatory synapses of rat hippocampus the replenishment of the readily releasable pool does not appear to be associated with a significant vesicular movement, and during long high frequency stimulation [Ca++]o does not influence the progressive decrease of vesicular replenishment.  相似文献

Spine catch ligaments of a sea urchin Arbacia punctulata were extended under constant load. Ligaments from an undisturbed animal may show any extension rate from zero (catch state) to rapid extension to failure. Replacing the preparation bath with Ca2+- and Mg2+-free sea water reversibly abolishes the catch state. The fine structure of the outer muscle layer and inner ligament cone associated with the spine base is described. The unstriated paramyosin muscles bear thin flanges and form compact interlocking rows. Subsurface cisternae are associated with the plasma membrane. The muscles are innervated by glia-free axons ending in bulbous terminals containing lucent synaptic vesicles. The ligament comprises cylindrical bundles of collagen fibrils: one or more minute muscle fibers (paramyosin) lie parallel with and closely adjoining each bundle. The mean diameter of these muscles is 0.3 μg and they occupy 2–3 % of the ligament's cross-sectional area. Axons containing electronopaque secretory droplets accompany the muscles between the collagen bundles: the cell bodies of these neurones generally lie on the outer surface of the ligament. When an urchin points a spine, the ligament on the side of the contracting spine muscle shortens but does not buckle. A function of the intraligamental muscles is to effect this non-buckled shortening. The catch mechanism (which resides entirely within the ligament) may be due either to the intraligamental muscles and/or to a locked polymer mechanism in which matrix molecules between collagen fibrils are reversibly crosslinked by divalent cations.  相似文献

Changes in diastolic indexes during normal aging, including reduced early filling velocity (E), lengthened E deceleration time (DT), augmented late filling (A), and prolonged isovolumic relaxation time (IVRT), have been attributed to slower left ventricular (LV) pressure (LVP) decay. Indeed, this constellation of findings is often referred to as the "abnormal relaxation" pattern. However, LV filling is determined by the atrioventricular pressure gradient, which depends on both LVP decline and left atrial (LA) pressure (LAP). To assess the relative influence of LVP decline and LAP, we studied 122 normal subjects aged 21-92 yr by Doppler echocardiography and MRI. LVP decline was assessed by color M-mode (V(p)) and the LV untwisting rate. Early diastolic LAP was evaluated using pulmonary vein flow systolic fraction, pulmonary vein flow diastolic DT, color M-mode (E/V(p)), and tissue Doppler (E/E(m)). Linear regression showed the expected reduction of E, increase in A, and prolongation of IVRT and DT with advancing age. There was no relation of age to parameters reflecting the rate of LVP decline. However, older age was associated with reduced E/V(p) (P = 0.008) and increased pulmonary vein systolic fraction (P < 0.001), pulmonary vein DT (P = 0.0026), and E/E(m) (P < 0.0001), all suggesting reduced early LAP. Therefore, reduced early filling in older adults may be more closely related to a reduced early diastolic LAP than to slower LVP decline. This effect also explains the prolonged IVRT. We postulate that changes in LA active or passive properties may contribute to development of the abnormal relaxation pattern during the aging process.  相似文献
