There are a number of possible links between airborne pollen and respiratory disease that remain underappreciated by both the scientific community and health care providers within the Latin American and Caribbean region. A few regional studies have assimilated some preliminary information on this association, and most recently research on interactions between airborne pollen and pediatric asthma on the Caribbean island of Trinidad has shown critical areas that require further investigation. Pollen samples were collected over a 2-year period using a Burkard 7 Day Recording Volumetric Spore Sampler. Corresponding pediatric asthma data were recorded at a nearby medical hospital. Results indicated that the wet season showed higher pollen concentrations (82 pollen per cubic meter/day) than the dry season (53 pollen per cubic meter/day), and several pollen taxa were observed. An association between airborne pollen concentrations and pediatric asthma emergency room visits was suggested incorporating a threshold and lag period.  相似文献

Toledo is one of the main tourist spots of Spain, attracting around two million visitors per year. Its geographical situation in the vast and scarcely monitored Region of Castilla La Mancha and the high number of tourists (especially in the spring) has resulted in the Spanish Aerobiology Network (REA) making this city a major study objective. Air monitoring studies carried out using REA sampling procedures commenced in October 2002. Thirty-two pollen types were identified during the sampling period (October 2002 to October 2004). The annual Pollen Index (PI) was 44124 for the agricultural year October 2002–October 2003, and 29666 in the same period of 2003–2004. The most abundant taxa were, in decreasing order of dominance: Cupressaceae, Quercus, Poaceae, Populus, Olea, Urticaceae, Platanus, Pinus and Ulmus. Other, less well-represented pollen taxa included Salix, Alnus, Fraxinus and Tamarix, which were characteristic of riverside areas, and Morus, Artemisia and Chenopodiaceae. The presence of Castanea pollen grains originating from chestnut crops far away from the city was clearly an example of long-distance transport. The highest concentrations of airborne pollen were detected from March to May and also in January, due to the flowering of Cupressaceae species. In general, there was a correlation between pollen and meteorological parameters: a positive correlation with temperature and a negative correlation with rainfall and humidity during the pre-peak period. A negative correlation between temperature and some tree pollen taxa was detected in the principal pollen period correlation analysis due to their long pollination periods.  相似文献

This paper brings together the scattered literature on the Onychophora from Trinidad, Tobago and the Lesser Antilles. The 11 known species from this area are described, incorporating new material collected by the author. Scanning electron micrographs of the dorsal integument are presented for all but one species. Parthenogenesis is reported in a population of Epiperipatus imthurni from Trinidad.  相似文献

The precise characterisation of present-day mangrove ecosystems from modern pollen rain facilitates the accurate use of fossil pollen data for late Quaternary sea level and environmental reconstructions. Here, we investigate whether the analysis of pollen rain data corroborates existing floristic and structural characterisation of different mangrove types at the Caribbean island of San Andrés, Colombia. At 82 plots along 20 transects of four distinct mangrove types, samples were obtained of (i) surface sediments for pollen analysis, and (ii) a range of environmental parameters (including inundation levels, salinity and pH). This information was compared to previously sampled mangrove composition and tree basal area. In surface sediment samples 82 pollen taxa were found, from which 19 were present in the vegetation plots. However, because pollen may be transported by wind and/or watercourses, the overall floristic composition of the different forest types may not necessarily be reflected by the pollen spectra. Local vegetation (i.e. mangroves and beach) represented > 90% of the pollen spectra, while the regional one (i.e. hinterland forests) represented < 5% of it. Unlike the four mangrove types that were previously described in the vegetation, the analysis of pollen samples suggested only three distinct types of forest.The groups were characterised based on (i) the dominance of at least one of the true mangrove species from pollen data ordination and the presence of associated species, and (ii) their relationship with environmental parameters. Rhizophora was present in all plot samples, but did not contribute to forest type separation. In fact, just three true mangrove species proved reliable indicators of (i) high salinity and fringe mangroves (i.e. Avicennia), (ii) high pH levels and landward mangroves (i.e. Conocarpus), and (iii) natural or anthropogenic caused disturbance of forest stands (Laguncularia and associated Acrostichum fern). Hence our study confirms that mangrove pollen spectra can be accurately used to describe different mangrove environments for fossil based palaeoecological reconstructions.  相似文献

When monitored by the agar gel immunodiffusion test for antibody to bluetongue viruses, a sentinel flock of twenty-five lambs remained seropositive through the year, whereas in a sentinel herd of twenty calves only two individuals seroconverted and these became negative again within 2 months. A light trap operated with the calf herd yielded high numbers of Culicoides insignis Lutz (over 18,000 per trap night) along with C. filariferus Hoffman, C. pusillus Lutz, C. leopoldi Ortiz, C. foxi Ortiz, C. limai Barretto, C. diabolicus Hoffman and C. guyanensis Floch and Abonnenc. Culicoides were trapped at the sheep station which had housed the lambs 3 years following the sentinel study. No virus was isolated from pools of C. insignis, C. filariferus and C. pusillus. Six other species were collected in insufficient numbers to warrant attempted virus isolations.  相似文献

Iron (Fe) deposition from African dust has been implicated in a variety of environmental impacts on downwind terrestrial and marine ecosystems throughout the Caribbean. The most abundant form of Fe in African dust is FeIII, which is often not bioavailable. The objective of this study was to determine to what degree microorganisms isolated from African dust collected in Trinidad and Tobago are capable of producing siderophores that mobilize bioavailable Fe into the environment. Aerosol samples were collected for microbial analyses during African dust conditions in the source region (Mali) and downwind sites (Trinidad and Tobago). Microbial community fingerprints, obtained by means of terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis, were compared among aerosol samples and possible Trinidadian sources of locally aerosolized microorganisms (sea water and soils). Ordination of the fingerprint data revealed similarities between aerosols from the source region and the aerosols and soils of downwind regions. Aerosol isolates from the downwind sites were screened for siderophore production using a modified chrome azurol-S (CAS) assay. Twenty-five percent of isolates tested that were sampled under non-dust conditions and 65% of African dust isolates produced at least one type of siderophore; among African dust isolates, all known classes of siderophores were produced. These data support African dust microorganism siderophore production as a viable mechanism by which Fe bioavailability may be increased in downwind locations, given appropriate conditions for microbial proliferation.  相似文献

The objective of this project was to study the pollen spectrum of the Marahué Wildlife Reserve (Central Argentina), the quantity and quality of airborne pollen grains, and to evaluate the contribution of outside sources, to protect a natural habitat with xerophytic shrub vegetation (“monte”) (the term “monte” is used for the dominant xerophytic shrub vegetation in the “partido” of Villarino) approximately 90 km south of Bahía Blanca. Sampling was performed weekly throughout a whole calendar year (January–December, 2003) using a volumetric impact sampler. Observations of flowering in the field were performed at the same time as the aerial sampling. Herbarium specimens were collected to make pollen collections of the species found in the study area, for reference purposes. The most abundant pollen types were Poaceae (31.3% total annual pollen), Amaranthus/Chenopodiaceae (25.3%), Eucalyptus (5%), Brassicaceae (3.9%), and Plantago (3.9%). This study showed the dispersion dynamics of pollen grains from characteristic species of the “partido” (the province of Buenos Aires is divided into partidos which are roughly equivalent to counties) of Villarino, the exotic flora of the surrounding area, and the pollen types from outside the region.

In the present study, the airborne concentrations of birch and oak pollen grains and birch pollen allergens have been recorded in samples from a common sampling station in Stockholm. The sampling period was between April 22nd and May 31st 2003. The objectives were to evaluate if analysis of allergen particles in parallel with pollen grains would be relevant to aid subjects suffering from pollinosis. Days with low birch pollen counts had relatively high nominal allergen concentrations in the beginning of the sampling period. The birch pollen grain concentration peaks, during the dry pollination culmination interval in the middle of the period, were associated with correspondingly lower nominal concentrations of allergens than grains. At the end of the sampling period very high nominal amounts of allergen appeared, as reflected by high concentrations of oak pollen grains. The high allergen concentrations were obtained as a result of inherent cross‐reactivity of anti‐ Bet v 1 antibodies with Que a antigens, which are immunologically analogous with Bet v 1. Allergen concentrations increased and decreased after light and heavy rain, respectively. Results obtained indicate that adding a pollen count forecast with allergen concentration data should aid pollen allergic subjects to avoid particulate allergens which might be expected to penetrate more easily than pollen grains into indoor environments.  相似文献

We tested the susceptibility patterns of 128 N. gonorrhoeae isolates to six antimicrobials; penicillin, tetracycline, spectinomycin, ceftriaxone, ciprofloxacin and azithromycin, and examined whether certain demographic or behavioral factors related to antibiotic use increased the likelihood of infection by a resistant strain. There was a low rate of resistance to penicillin; penicillinase-producing and chromosomal-mediated penicillin resistant gonorrhea were estimated to be 0.8%. A much higher proportion of isolates were resistant to tetracycline (up to 15%). All isolates were sensitive to spectinomycin, ciprofloxacin and ceftriaxone. However, less than 2% of isolates displayed intermediate resistance to both ciprofloxacin and ceftriaxone, and 9% exhibited intermediate resistance to spectinomycin. Patients who had obtained medication before attending the clinic and had taken all of the medication were more likely (p = 0.03) to be infected with a resistant strain of gonococcus. Also, patients who were asked by a clinic doctor to return for a test of cure during an earlier clinic visit, but who did not return were more likely to be infected with a resistant organism (p = 0.006) compared to those who returned at the doctor's request. These findings have important implications for antibiotic use and educational programs in Trinidad and Tobago.  相似文献

Reproduction and growth of the vermilion snapper, Rhomboplites aurorubens, were studied in Trinidad and Tobago. The smallest individual caught measured 145mm total length (TL) and all fish appeared to be mature. It was not possible to precisely determine size at first maturity due to the use of macroscopic techniques. The smallest spent male and female measured 181 and 211mm TL respectively, suggesting a size at first maturity below these sizes. Spawning occurred throughout the year, with a period of peak spawning from about June to November in the rainy season when river runoff increased. Sagittal otolith sections were used for age determination and the opaque ring, which was counted as the annulus, was deposited from January to May in the dry season. A total of 11 age groups between the ages of 2–12 years (155–505mm total length) were found. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters were: L=532mm, K=0.13y–1, and t0=–0.17, where L is the asymptotic length, K is the growth coefficient and t0 is the theoretical age at zero length. The relationship between weight (WT) and length (TL) was WT=3.43×10–5 TL2.82. Vermilion snapper in this study area appears to grow slower and attain a smaller asymptotic length, but has a longer lifespan than found in populations in higher latitudes. This may be attributed to different levels of exploitation, which may be higher in the latter areas.  相似文献

In attempting to evaluate the evolutionary stability of the reproductive strategies of an avian brood parasite, it is important to know whether or not the observed levels of parasitism on host species have changed through time and whether or not new host species are being used in the region under study. In this regard, the islands of Trinidad and Tobago provide an excellent opportunity because they are ornithologically well known and the expansion of the parasitic Shiny Cowbird Molothrus bonariensis into the West Indian region is thought to have originated from Trinidad and Tobago. On the whole, host choice has remained remarkably stable over the past 50–60 years. The three hosts (House Wren Troglodytes aedon, Red-breasted Blackbird Leistes militaris and Yellow-hooded Blackbird Agelaius icterocephalus) known to be heavily parasitized historically remain heavily parasitized today. Only one instance of parasitism of a new host (Tropical Kingbird Tyrannus melancholicus) is recorded. In the case of one intensively studied host, the Yellow-hooded Blackbird, cowbird parasitism had a minimal negative effect on the host's reproductive success. Reproductive equilibrium in this study seemed to be maintained by behavioural adaptations of host and parasite to each other. The stable pattern of host choice by Shiny Cowbirds in Trinidad and Tobago may not develop elsewhere in the West Indian region. Before the cowbird's expansion in the West Indies, potential hosts had no prior experience of brood parasites. Consequently, the island bird populations are unlikely to have evolved defensive strategies and thus may be more vulnerable to reproductive failure as a result of cowbird parasitism, precluding the development of a stable system at this point in time.  相似文献

Trinidad and Tobago is a twin-island Republic in the Caribbean and like many developing countries, it has included generic drugs on the national drug formulary to decrease the financial burden of pharmaceutical medications. However, to ensure that medications received by patients are beneficial, generic drugs need to be interchangeable with the innovator which has demonstrated safety, efficacy, and quality. The objective of the study was to compare the dissolution profiles and weight variations for different formulations of amoxicillin, metronidazole, and zidovudine that are on the national drug formulary and marketed in Trinidad and Tobago. All the products investigated are categorized as class 1 drugs according to the Biopharmaceutics Classification System (BCS) and the dissolution profiles were assessed according to the World Health Organization (WHO) criteria for interchangeability between products. The similarity factor, f2, was used to determine sameness between the products. No generic formulation was found to be similar to Amoxil® 500-mg capsules. The two generic products for metronidazole 200-mg tablets demonstrated more than 85% drug release within 15 min in all three of the buffers; however, their 400-mg counterparts did not fulfill this requirement. The zidovudine 300-mg tablet complied with the requirements in buffer pH 4.5 and simulated gastric fluid (SGF) but not for simulated intestinal fluid (SIF). Some Class 1 pharmaceutical formulations may possess the same active ingredient and amount of drug but may show significant differences to in vitro equivalence requirements. A study of the airborne pollen grains in Nsukka, Nigeria, has been carried out at two different sampling heights (1.8?m and 15?m) from February 1993 to January 1994. Twenty‐six plant families (40 genera) were identified at the lower sampling height, whilst thirty‐eight families (58 genera) were identified at the height of 15?m. A total of nine and eighteen fern spore types were observed at 1.80?m and 15?m, respectively. The quantitative results indicate that the number of pollen observed at 15?m sampling height was statistically different (p<0.05) from that observed at the height of 1.80?m. The analysis of airborne pollen grains indicates three different periods: (1) dry season, (2) rainy season, and (3) late rainy season to early dry season/Harmattan. The highest pollen abundance was recorded during the late rainy season – early dry season/Harmattan followed by that of the dry season. The predominant pollen grains and fern spores trapped at both heights include Poaceae, Casuarina equisetifolia, Milicia excelsa, Elaeis guineensis, Celtis integrifolia, Alchornea cordifolia, Amaranthaceae/Chenopodiaceae, Combretaceae/Melastomataceae, Nephrolepis biserrata, Thelypteris totta, and Dryopteris spp.  相似文献
