Japan depends heavily on imports for its food supply. Since 2000, the food self‐sufficiency ratio has remained approximately 40% on a caloric basis. Japanese food wastage (i.e., food losses and food waste) is estimated to have been 6.42 million tonnes (50 kg per capita of wastage) in 2012. These values indicate that food wastage leads to wasted natural resources and excessive greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions both in Japan and in countries that export to Japan. This study estimates Japanese food wastage by food item to evaluate impacts on land and water resources and global GHG emissions during the processing, distribution, and consumption phases of the food supply chain while also considering the feed crops needed for livestock production. Despite uncertainties due to data limitations, in 2012, 1.23 million hectares of harvested land were used to produce food that was eventually wasted, and 413 million m3 of water resources were wasted due to Japanese food wastage in agricultural production. Furthermore, unnecessary GHG emissions were 3.51 million tonnes of CO2 eq. in agricultural production and 0.49 million tonnes of CO2 eq. in international transportation. The outcomes of the present study can be used to develop countermeasures to food wastage in industrializing Asian countries where food imports are projected to increase and food wastage issues in the consumption stage are expected to become as serious as they currently are in Japan.  相似文献

Food consumption was measured in an insecticide-susceptible (Orlando) and-resistant (Village Green) strain of German cockroach, Blattella germanica (Dictyoptera: Blattellidae), throughout each stadium. All instars exhibited a similar pattern of consumption over the course of the instar; consumption was low to moderate at the beginning of each instar, climbed steadily to a maximum near the middle, declined progressively from the mid-instar maximum, and ceased or was minimal several days before the next molt. Consumption ceased or was minimal during the final two to four days of each instar. Cumulative consumption for the six instars was significantly greater in the Village Green strain as compared with the Orlando strain. Village Green nymphs consumed 79.6±0.7 mg of rat chow while Orlando nymphs consumed 63.7±3.4 mg. Total consumption by instar increased significantly with each successive instar in the Village Green strain. In addition, Village Green sixth instar females consumed significantly more food than sixth instar males. A similar trend was observed for the Orlando strain; consumption tended to increase in each successive instar. Relative consumption rate (food consumed/cockroach/instar divided by the mean weight of the instar) was highest in the first two instars and decreased in subsequent instars.  相似文献

食品源氮消费是人居环境养分流动的重要环节,中国食品源氮消费产生的环境排放受城乡二元结构影响在时空变化上呈现显著分异。基于物质流分析方法,从中国城乡食品消费后产物不同处理过程及其对氮代谢的影响出发,模拟氮物质代谢过程,构建了一套氮素环境排放计算模型,借以研究中国近20年来城乡食品源氮消费环境排放趋势变化及其差异。研究结果发现1993—2012年间,我国城乡居民人均食品源氮排变化轨迹迥异。同时,城乡食品源氮消费在其所造成的水体、土壤、大气环境负荷中扮演的角色各不相同:在水体环境负荷中,农村水体氮排占据主导地位,但城乡间差异正逐步缩小;在土壤环境负荷中,城市土壤氮排主导优势明显;2010年以前全国食品源氮消费大气环境负荷主要受农村气体氮排的影响,而2010年以后,城市大气氮排成为影响全国大气氮负荷的主导因素。引入社会经济因素分析后发现,城镇居民人均可支配收入水平对城镇居民人均食品源氮排起显著促进作用;而农村食品价格指数对农村居民人均食品源环境氮排呈显著抑制作用。通过情景预测分析发现:随着我国城镇化进程的加快,未来全国居民人均食品源氮排将以更快速度继续增长。  相似文献

Rapid advances in microfabrication, DNA and protein microarray and microfluidic technologies have enabled the development of fully-integrated, miniaturized systems. These so called 'laboratory-on-a-chip' (LOC) devices perform sample preparation (i.e. concentration, separation and purification) together with biochemical reactions and detection steps in a simple and automated manner. We believe LOC technology for environmental microbiology studies will have immediate impacts on microbial monitoring by achieving detection and identification within minutes at the single-cell level, and on microbial ecology by deepening the understanding of microbial community structure and diversity and correlating these with niche-specific functions within a micro space. In the long run, significant impacts are anticipated on environmental metagenomics and proteomics.  相似文献

The lepidopteran insect pests have significant importance in vegetable production. The present study was performed to investigate the baseline studies about the assessment of feeding and consumption potential, utilization indices and losses promises of leafworm, Spodoptera litura (Fab.) on Okra. The data regarding feeding potential, food utilization and consumption indices as well as losses of different larval instars were recorded and subjected to appropriate statistical analysis. The results showed that, in the beginning, the approximate digestibility of various instars was increase, e.g. third instar (51.36%–64.03%), fourth instar (63.42%–69.45%) and fifth instar (70.25%–76.10%). However, after a certain period, the digestibility was decreased and efficiency to convert the ingested food into biomass varied significantly. The consumption index values increased with an increase in time but the consumption and growth rate was declined of fourth instar larvae. The ingestion and digestion increased of third (10.01–13.06, 8.32–11.91 mg), fourth (11.27–17.28, 10.96–14.03 mg) and fifth (12.60–19.40, 11.93–15.28 mg) larval instars. The corrected weight of consumed leaves increased with a gain in body weight. However, in the third instar, a decline was observed on the last day of feeding. Maximum leaf area was consumed by fifth instar larvae (44.66 cm2) followed by fourth (35.41 cm2) and third (27.98 cm2) instars. In conclusion, all the dependent parameters, including food utilization potential, consumption indices and losses were higher for fifth instar larvae than others. These results emphasized the re-establishment of fundamental (economic threshold level: ETL, economic injury level: EIL) integrated pest management concepts.  相似文献

Generalizations derived from simple optimal diet models were field-tested at forest feeding stations where a choice of two foods was offered. The relationship between food availability and consumption by three species of rodents (Peromyscus maniculatus, Clethrionomys gapperi and Napaeozapus insignis) was examined in five separate experiments. In all five cases rodents preferred the food which yielded the highest caloric gain per unit handling time, as predicted by the simple models. However, in all five cases, less preferred items were sampled even when they were not part of the optimal diet. In three cases the consumption of the non-preferred food type varied with its abundance and in one case food preference changed with its availability. The latter three results indicate that these rodents do not use simple optimal diet strategies.  相似文献

In the western Baltic Sea (WBS), whiting Merlangius merlangus is the main piscivorous fish together with cod Gadus morhua. In the present study, we investigate the growth and food consumption rates of WBS M. merlangus and compare the growth rates of males and females with those of M. merlangus in the North Sea (NS). Food consumption rates are estimated directly from sampled stomach contents in the WBS using a gastric evacuation rate model and indirectly by using a static energy‐budget model together with the growth rates. The results indicate that male and female M. merlangus in the WBS have similar feeding and growth strategies, while in the NS M. merlangus show more pronounced differences in food consumption and growth dynamics between the sexes. Female WBS M. merlangus grow significantly slower than their conspecifics in the NS, but there is no significant difference for males. Sexual size dimorphism is seen in both areas, but for M. merlangus in the WBS the difference is less pronounced. Food consumption rates in the WBS differ between seasons, with the lowest food intake in the first 2 quarters of the year and the highest in the 3rd quarter. No differences in consumption rates were seen between males and females, which could be related to the more similar growth pattern seen for M. merlangus in the WBS.  相似文献

Two small demersal fishes, the sand goby Pomatoschistus minutus and the common goby Pomatoschistus microps , were quantified on soft bottoms at 20–40 m depth in the Baltic Sea, using a camera placed above the bottom. The largest numbers of gobies were seen following the settlement of young in late summer and autumn. Most recorded fishes were sand gobies. An annual average of 4·7 individuals m−2(0·24 g dry mass m−2) was recorded in 1983–1985 and 2·5 individuals m−2(0·13 g m−2) in 1997–1998. Using these densities, the annual goby food consumption was estimated to 100 kJ m−2 in 1983–1985 and 50 kJ m−2 in 1997–1998, corresponding to most of the annual macrobenthos production available to the gobies. The resulting goby production, assumed equal to 25% of the food consumed, must have been an important food source for the larger fishes occasionally recorded in the photographs.  相似文献

The early human diet was characteristically extremely varied, and a wide range of plant species and plant organs were consumed. Foods of animal origin included those taken opportunistically, such as invertebrates, amphibians, reptiles, small mammals, birds and their eggs, and the scavenging and hunting of larger mammals. Each of these types of food have characteristic nutritional compositions. Comparison of these compositional features shows that an adequate diet could be obtained in many different ways. The selection of food providing fat had substantial advantages in reducing the amount of plant foods to be gathered, in the satiety provided and in supplying essential micronutrients. Obtaining adequate water and energy would probably be the main physiological drives. Many plant foods contain natural toxicants, and would only have been suitable as major items in the diet once cooking had been developed, and the preference for sweet tastes would have protected humans from eating bitter, toxic plants.  相似文献

Worldwide, the production of biodegradable and compostable plastics has steadily grown. In Part 1 (Khoo et al. 2010), life cycle assessment (LCA) was applied to compare the production stages of a bio-based bag (made from polyhydroxyalkanoate or bio-plastic (PHA)) with polyethylene plastic bag. The scope of the study is within the context of Singapore and does not include other types of conventional or bio-based polymers (e.g., polylactic acid (PLA), thermoplastics, high-density polyethylene (HDPE), EPS, etc). The use of bio-based products as carrier bags, packaging materials, and many other applications has been increasingly replacing conventional polymer products. One of the main driving forces of bio-plastic applications is the perceived depletion and scarcity of fossil fuels, especially petroleum. However, despite being introduced as an environmentally friendly alternative to plastics made from crude oil, the environmental benefits of bio-plastics remain debatable. The frequent occurrence of devastating blooms of the harmful dinoflagellate Karenia brevis in the Gulf of Mexico has motivated research into bloom dynamics and potential mitigation strategies. The use of competing phytoplankton to lower waterborne concentrations of the most abundant and toxic brevetoxins produced during these blooms has been proposed. However the ecological impacts of using such biocontrol agents have not been addressed. This study investigated the impact on marine invertebrates of lowered brevetoxin concentrations due to the presence of competing phytoplankton. Even at low brevetoxin concentrations, the presence of the common diatom Skeletonema grethae ameliorated harmful toxic effects of brevetoxins upon the brine shrimp, Artemia salina, and reduced the incidence of negative physiological and morphological responses of the sea anemone Aiptasia pallida. In addition, brevetoxin biotransformation products formed by competing phytoplankton appear to be non-toxic or do not trigger the same physiological responses as brevetoxins in the model organisms used. These findings may impact the interpretation of ecotoxicological data gathered during bloom events, since the presence of phytoplankton competitors in Karenia blooms is likely to reduce the harmful effects seen on many marine invertebrates.  相似文献
