During three expeditions with the RVs Meteor and Polarstern more than sixty thousand peracarids were sampled from the deep Arctic Ocean (northern North Atlantic) by means of an epibenthic sledge. Sampling areas were the Kolbeinsey Ridge north of Iceland (800–1100 m), the Northeast Water Polynya, off Greenland (45–517m), and 75°N east of Greenland (197–2681m). Until now 288 species of Peracarida have been identified to species level. These 288 species comprise 152 genera and 59 families of Amphipoda, Cumacea, Isopoda, Mysidacea and Tanaidacea. Thirty-eight genera were very frequent and were sampled at each expedition (these were 22 species of Isopoda, seven species of Cumacea, three species of Amphipoda and Mysidacea, each, and two species of Tanaidacea). Sixty genera are eurybathic, occurring at least over a depth range of 1000m, some even from the shelf up to 2681m depth. Only 10 genera are stenobathic, occurring only in the deep sea. No significant decrease in species number with depth or latitude could be observed. The influencing factors probably causing different community structures are diverse, ranging from food availability over substrate or hydrographical qualities to interspecific competition.  相似文献

We report on the first record of interstitial cnidarians in sea ice. Ice core samples were collected during eight field periods between February 2003 and June 2006 in the coastal fast ice off Barrow, Alaska (71°N, 156°W) at four locations. A total of 194 solitary, small (0.2–1.1 mm) elongated specimens of a previously unknown interstitial hydroid taxon were found. By cnidome composition and the occurrence of a highly retractable pedal disc formed by epidermal tissue only, the specimens are tentatively assigned to representatives of the family Protohydridae, subclass Anthomedusae. The hydroids were found almost exclusively in the bottom 10 cm-layer (at the ice–water interface) of 118 ice cores, with abundances ranging from 0 to 27 individuals per core section (0–4,244 ind m−2) and a grand mean of 269 ind m−2 in bottom 10 cm-layer sections. Abundances were lower in December and late May than in months in between with considerable site variability. A factor analysis using 12 variables showed that hydroid abundance correlated highest with abundances of copepod nauplii and polychaete juveniles suggesting a trophic relationship.  相似文献

Isolation, molecular identification and phylogenetic analysis were carried out to investigate the biodiversity of manganese bacteria in sediments which were collected from the Arctic Ocean during the 2nd Chinese Arctic Scientific Expedition. 21 and 19 species of cultivable strains were isolated from sediments at Stations P11 and S11, respectively, according to their distinct morphological character on the screening plate of manganese medium. Molecular identification and phylogenetic analysis showed that the cultivable manganese bacteria from Station P11 were basically composed of γ-Proteobacteria (γ subgroup of the Proteobacteria branch of the domain Bacteria) and Actinobacteria, which accounted for 86% and 14%, respectively. The isolates of γ-Proteobacteria mainly included Psychrobacter, Shewanella, Acinetobacter and Marinobacter, of which Psychrobacter was the major genus, which accounted for 67% of the γ-Proteobacteria. The cultivable manganese bacteria from Station S11 included α-Proteobacteria, γ-Proteobacteria and Flavobacteria of Bacteroides. The γ-Proteobacteria mainly included Shewanella, Marinomonas and Alteromonas. The majority of α-Proteobacteria was Sphingomonas. The phylogenetic analysis indicated that bacteria from sediments at Stations P11 and S11 had different cultivable manganese microbial communities. All tested strains had higher resistance to Mn2+, of which Marinomonas sp. S11-S-4 had the highest resistant ability.  相似文献

Summary The fine structure of the ocellus of Sarsia tubulosa is described. The ocellar cup is formed of pigment cells and receptor cells. The receptor cells outnumber the pigment cells in almost a 2:1 ratio. Lateral extensions of neighbouring pigment cells enclose a distal region of 2 to 10 receptor cells. The receptor cell body is 5–7 m in diameter with an apical extension (20–60 m long) that reaches the ocellar cavity. A cilium (9+2 microtubules) arises from the distal part of the receptor cell. The ciliary membrane forms lateral microvilli. The tips of a number of cilia are swollen into large vesicles forming a cornea. The central region of the ocellar cavity contains extracellular electron dense homogeneous material surrounded by swollen ciliary tips and small vesicles. The close apposition between the plasma membrane covering the distal part of adjacent receptor cells as well as the adjacent ciliary shafts suggests the presence of gap junctions. The basal part of each receptor cell forms an axon. The axons of receptor cells form 3 to 4 nerve bundles that join to form the optic nerve. Synapses occur between receptor cell bodies, between axons and receptor cell bodies and among axons.  相似文献

This article recounts the negotiations and emergence of Article 234 concerning ice-covered areas in the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. As Arctic shipping increases, more vessels and flag states may be subject to the provisions of Article 234, which permit coastal states to both prescribe and enforce special measures to protect the marine environment in ice-covered areas. The history of the Article 234, disclosed partially through declassified U.S. government documents, provides context for implementation of the provision by Arctic coastal states and flag states.  相似文献

The previously unknown life cycle of the parasitic hydroid Hydrichthys mirus is described. The adult medusa has 5–6 tentacles and could be referred to Leuckartiara. Another species of Hydrichthys has previously been shown to have a Stomotoca -like medusa, characterized by the possession of two tentacles. It is proposed that Hydrichthys originated from the Leuckartiara lineage and that, through paedomorphosis in at least one species, the medusa retained the two-tentacle state of the newly-released medusa of all pandeids, thus becoming referable to Stomotoca. It is suggested that Stomotoca has hitherto constituted a polyphyletic taxon, embracing parallel lineages of pandeids, each retaining juvenile features. An additional genus, Larsonia , is introduced to accommodate species with Stomotoca-like medusae and Hydrichthys -like hydroids.  相似文献

We used fluorescently labeled phalloidin to examine the subumbrellar musculature of the scyphozoan jellyfish Aurelia aurita in a developmental series from ephyra to adult medusa. In the ephyra, the swim musculature includes a disc‐like sheet of circular muscle, in addition to two radial bands of muscle in each of the eight ephyral arms. The radial muscle bands join with the circular muscle, and both circular and radial muscle act together during each swim contraction. As the ephyra grows into a juvenile medusa, arms tissue is resorbed as the bell tissue grows outward, so eventually, the ephyral arms disappear. During this process, the circular muscle disc also grows outward and the radial muscle bands of the arms also disappear. At this time, a marginal gap appears at the bell margin, which is devoid of circular muscle cells, but has a loose arrangement of radial muscle fibers. This marginal gap is preserved as the medusa grows, and contributes to the floppy nature of the bell margin. Radial distortions in the circular muscle layer involve muscle fibers that run in random directions, with a primarily radial orientation. These are believed to be remnants of the radial muscle of the ephyral arms, and the distortions decrease in number and extent as the medusa grows. Since the mechanics of swimming changes from drag‐based paddling in the ephyra to marginal rowing in the adult medusa, the development of the marginal gap and the presence of radial distortions should be considered in terms of this mechanical transition.  相似文献

海洋微食物环在海洋生态系统中起着重要作用.北冰洋因常年为海冰所覆盖,对微食物环的研究较为有限.现有研究表明,微食物环在北冰洋生态系统中的作用与海域和季节相关.近年来环境的快速变化、特别是夏季海冰覆盖面积的迅速减少,会对微食物环的结构和功能产生重大影响,已有研究显示其生态作用有望进一步提高.综合近年来已有的研究成果,对北冰洋微食物环的主要类群:原核生物、真核浮游植物、原生动物和浮游病毒等的基本生态特征进行了概述,讨论了各类群间的相互关系,并对未来的研究重点进行了展望.  相似文献

Prokaryote communities were investigated on the seasonally stratified Alaska Beaufort Shelf (ABS). Water and sediment directly underlying water with origin in the Arctic, Pacific or Atlantic oceans were analyzed by pyrosequencing and length heterogeneity-PCR in conjunction with physicochemical and geographic distance data to determine what features structure ABS microbiomes. Distinct bacterial communities were evident in all water masses. Alphaproteobacteria explained similarity in Arctic surface water and Pacific derived water. Deltaproteobacteria were abundant in Atlantic origin water and drove similarity among samples. Most archaeal sequences in water were related to unclassified marine Euryarchaeota. Sediment communities influenced by Pacific and Atlantic water were distinct from each other and pelagic communities. Firmicutes and Chloroflexi were abundant in sediment, although their distribution varied in Atlantic and Pacific influenced sites. Thermoprotei dominated archaea in Pacific influenced sediments and Methanomicrobia dominated in methane-containing Atlantic influenced sediments. Length heterogeneity-PCR data from this study were analyzed with data from methane-containing sediments in other regions. Pacific influenced ABS sediments clustered with Pacific sites from New Zealand and Chilean coastal margins. Atlantic influenced ABS sediments formed another distinct cluster. Density and salinity were significant structuring features on pelagic communities. Porosity co-varied with benthic community structure across sites and methane did not. This study indicates that the origin of water overlying sediments shapes benthic communities locally and globally and that hydrography exerts greater influence on microbial community structure than the availability of methane.  相似文献

This study reviews the Ptilocodiidae from South China Sea,including three species.The diagnoses of the family and each genus are provided.A new genus,Tregouboviopsis Guo,Xu & Huang,gen.nov.is erected,based on the monotypy,Tregouboviopsis perradialis (Xu,Huang & Du,2012) comb.nov.,which is transferred from the genus Tregoubovia.A free eumedusoid ofHydrichthella ocellata Xu,Huang & Wang,sp.nov.is described in the present paper.A key to known genera of family Ptilocodiidae is presented.All type specimens are deposited in the South China Sea Fisheries Research Institute,Chinese Academy of Fishery Science.  相似文献

Bacterial diversity in surface sediments from the Pacific Arctic Ocean   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
In order to assess bacterial diversity within four surface sediment samples (0–5 cm) collected from the Pacific Arctic Ocean, 16S ribosomal DNA clone library analysis was performed. Near full length 16S rDNA sequences were obtained for 463 clones from four libraries and 13 distinct major lineages of Bacteria were identified (α, β, γ, δ and ε-Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Chloroflexi, Actinobacteria, Firmicutes, Planctomycetes, Spirochetes, and Verrucomicrobia). α, γ, and δ-Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria were common phylogenetic groups from all the sediments. The γ-Proteobacteria were the dominant bacterial lineage, representing near or over 50% of the clones. Over 35% of γ-Proteobacteria clones of four clone library were closely related to cultured bacterial isolates with similarity values ranging from 94 to 100%. The community composition was different among sampling sites, which potentially was related to geochemical differences.  相似文献

A new species of pandeid anthomedusa, Amphinema modernisme, is described from a single and complete specimen collected by a mid-water sediment trap placed at 500 m depth in open waters, over a 1066-m bottom in the Drake Passage near the South Shetland Islands. This new Amphinema is characterized by an egg-shaped apical chamber, partitioned by four narrow sacciform centrifugal prolongations of the radial canals, perradial gonads and cellular strands linking the radial canals to the exumbrella. Its morphological features are compared with those of the eight other species of the genus Amphinema and a new diagnosis for this genus is presented. Accepted: 19 July 1999  相似文献

The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (LOSC) permits state parties to establish an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) 200 nautical miles from their coast. Coastal states have exclusive jurisdiction over resources within the EEZ, but navigational and other high seas freedoms continue to exist. A significant number of states have, however, enacted legislation that departs from the LOSC, interfering with the navigational rights and freedoms of other states. This article analzses this development with a specific focus on the Arctic. It investigates the powers of Arctic coastal states to regulate shipping in the EEZ and thereby navigation in the Arctic Ocean. It adds to the existing literature by providing an analysis of state practice, suggesting that despite uncertainty concerning the interpretation of the LOSC Article 234 and the right to exercise legislative jurisdiction over ice-covered waters, a not insignificant number of states have claimed jurisdiction in their own EEZ beyond the rights granted in the LOSC, and are therefore not in a position to object to extensive jurisdictional claims in the Arctic.  相似文献

Mitochondrial ribosomal gene sequences were used to investigate the status of several populations of hydromedusae belonging to the genus Turritopsis (family Oceaniidae). Several nominal species have been described for this genus, but most of them had been synonymized and attributed to one cosmopolitan species, Turritopsis nutricula . A recent revision based on morphological and reproductive characters, however, has shown that many different populations can be distinguished and that several of the nominal Turritopsis species are likely valid biological species. Our investigation using molecular sequence data of 16S mitochondrial gene confirms these results. The Mediterranean Turritopsis must be attributed to Turritopsis dohrnii and the Turritopsis of New Zealand must be referred to Turritopsis rubra . The situation of the Japanese Turritopsis is more complex, though all sampled populations are clearly distinct from T. nutricula , a species likely confined to the Western Atlantic. The Japanese Turritopsis fall into three widely separated lineages. One of them, corresponding likely to Turritopsis pacifica , is closely related to T. rubra . A second clade, which potentially represents an as yet undescribed species, produces smaller medusae than T. pacifica and is morphologically distinguishable from it. Finally, a third group was distinguished by a single haplotype sequence that is identical with a Mediterranean sample of T. dohrnii . It is postulated that the last group of Japanese Turritopsis is likely a recent introduction, most probably by human activity. A survey of all known and potentially valid Turritopsis species is given in table format to facilitate identifications and future revisory work.  相似文献

The observed onset of climate change at high northern latitudes has highlighted the need to establish current baseline conditions in the Arctic Ocean, and has raised concern about the potential for the invasion and growth of biota that have warm temperature optima, such as cyanobacteria. In this study, we used 16S rRNA gene sequences as a molecular marker to evaluate the hypothesis that Arctic rivers provide a major inoculum of cyanobacteria into the coastal Arctic Ocean. Surface samples were collected along a transect extending from the Mackenzie River (Northwest Territories, Canada), across its estuary, to 200 km offshore at the edge of the perennial Arctic pack ice (Beaufort Sea). The highest picocyanobacteria concentrations occurred in the river, with concentrations an order of magnitude lower at offshore marine stations. The 16S rRNA gene clone libraries of five surface samples and five strains along this gradient showed that the cyanobacterial sequences were divided into eight operational taxonomic units (OTUs), six OTUs closely related to freshwater and brackish Synechococcus and two OTUs of filamentous cyanobacteria. No typically marine Synechococcus sequences and no Prochlorococcus sequences were recovered. These results are consistent with the hypothesis of an allochthonous origin of picocyanobacteria in the coastal Arctic Ocean, and imply survival but little net growth of picocyanobacteria under the present conditions in northern high-latitude seas.  相似文献

Two species of ocean skaters, Halobates germanus and Halobates micans, live in the tropical and subtropical waters of the Indian Ocean. From December 1992 to December 1993, Halobates was intensively sampled in the easternmost region of the South Indian Ocean (13–18.5°S, 114–121E°), from which there have been a small number of records of Halobates. No H. germanus was caught, but a total of 1190 H. micans were collected, with densities estimated at 13 900–28 100 individuals/km2. This suggests that H. micans lives in the study area at high densities comparable to those in the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans. We also discuss the possible effects of ocean currents and winds on the geographic distributions of the two Halobates species in the eastern South Indian Ocean.  相似文献
