Capsule Woodpigeons range over greater areas during winter than summer with winter dispersion greatest in the first two winters following fledging.

Aims To radiotrack Woodpigeons, to analyse the BTO ringing recoveries and to examine ranging behaviour.

Methods Movements of 19 adult and nine newly fledged Woodpigeons around a 1070-ha study site in eastern England were monitored by radiotracking. The BTO recovery data were analysed for birds ringed in arable areas of Britain during the period 1950 to 1999.

Results The mean 95% minimum convex polygons during the summer were 254 ha for adults and 294 ha for juveniles. These ranges increased to 628 ha for adults and 1283 ha for juveniles during winter. Although they left the study area over the winter, some radiotagged juveniles returned to their natal areas the following summer. Winter dispersion followed by a return to the natal area the following summer only occurred for the first two years of life.

Conclusion Although Woodpigeons are largely sedentary, the winter dispersion of juvenile birds will weaken any effect of localized winter shooting on the numbers of breeding birds in that area the following spring.  相似文献

Capsule The Woodpigeon Columba palumbus has a wide and varied diet, dominated by vegetable matter. This study found no significant difference in the diet of male and female birds in North-East Ireland; however, diet differed significantly between the seasons. In summer and autumn, the grains of cereal crops constituted the largest proportion of the diet, whereas in spring and winter, diet was dominated by the fruit and seeds of trees. This varied diet allows Woodpigeons to feed on seasonally abundant food sources, that have a high calorific content and that are ignored by most other seed-eating birds.  相似文献

Pea bacterial blight occurred by natural infection in a field trial on peas in 1995. Disease development in the winter cultivars Rafale, Frilene and Froidure was compared with that in the spring cultivars Baccara, Conquest and Bohatyr, each sown on six dates in October, November, December, mid-March, late March and April. Disease incidence had reached 100% plants affected in all treatments by mid-July. Disease severity was greater in winter-sown (October, November or December) than in spring-sown peas of each cultivar at each assessment. Significant (P < 0.05) differences in disease severity occurred between cultivars in the winter-sown plots in May and June and the spring cultivars were affected more severely than the winter cultivars. Comparison of areas under the disease progress curves for both disease incidence and severity also showed that the winter-sown peas were more affected by disease than spring-sown peas and that spring cultivars were more severely affected than winter cultivars. Yield was strongly correlated with disease severity. A linear regression model suggested that, for peas sown in October, November or December, a yield loss of 0.5 tha-1 occurred for each 10% increase in canopy area affected by pea bacterial blight.  相似文献

A Goldcrest Regulus regulus population living in a spruce-dominated forest near Oslo (c.60°N), in southern Norway, was studied during the winters (November-March) from 1966–67 to 1971–72. A significant reduction in population size occurred between November and March, the recorded values varying from 76 to 96%, with a mean reduction for all six winters studied of 86%. This winter decline in numbers was significantly correlated with both precipitation (i.e., snowfall) and ambient temperature, but not with bird density. Spiders were the predominant prey items of the Goldcrests, and it is suggested that the birds experience food shortages that affect their survival rate. Although not statistically significant, a mean change in the ratio of males:females from 2:1 in October-November to 10:1 in December—February was observed, suggesting that a greater mortality of females than males occurs during the winter.
Partly based on data for colour-banded birds, it is suggested that the Goldcrests form social flocks, which move around as individual units within territories of about 9 ha (7.5 12 ha, n = 5) in extent. The mean flock size decreased significantly from 4.57 ( n = 157) birds in November-December to 2.82 ( n = 74) birds in January-February, probably because of the reductions in the size of the local population during the winter. The mean flock size in November-December varied inversely with the ambient temperature ( r = -0.92).  相似文献

CapsuleExtensive surveys highlighted the importance of weedy fodder brassicas, stubbles and open farmland landscapes to declining birds.

Aims To determine habitat associations of seed-eating passerines on Scottish farmland in winter, and recommend appropriate conservation measures.

Methods Transect surveys were carried out on farmland in 100 1-km squares, containing 2885 fields, across Scotland. Birds, crops, field boundary features and weeds were recorded on three visits. Bird–habitat associations were examined using logistic regression models.

Results Seed-eating passerines were highly concentrated: 100 fields (1.4% of the area surveyed) held half the total count. The highest field densities of birds were recorded in fodder brassica crops and stubbles, averaging 12 and 3.3 birds/ha respectively. In fodder crops, weedier fields held many more birds. Multiple regression analysis emphasized the importance of fodder crops, stubbles and farmyards and suggested that declining bird species preferred more open landscapes. Several bird species were associated with fields containing very weedy patches, and/or weeds of the family Chenopodiaceae. These features were commonest in fodder brassicas. Many of the crop types found to be important as bird habitats in winter have declined in area in Scotland; the availability of seed food in such habitats may also have diminished. Such changes may partly explain recent population declines.

Conclusions Agri-environment measures for seed-eating passerines should support the widespread provision of small areas of seed-rich wintering habitats, such as weedy fodder brassicas and stubbles, especially in open (0–10% woodland and scrub) landscapes in areas with mild winters.  相似文献

Capsule Woodpigeon Columba palumbus nest-tree selection is affected by human disturbance, grazing and tree characteristics.

Aims To determine the characteristics of trees used for nesting by Woodpigeons under two levels of grazing and disturbance in a Holm oak Middle Atlas forest, Morocco.

Methods Woodpigeon nest-tree selection was investigated in highly disturbed and less-disturbed sites over two years (2010 and 2011). The features of nest-tree characteristics were determined by comparing the characteristics of trees used for nesting to those of randomly selected trees.

Results Tree physical characteristics, grazing intensity and level of human disturbance were the main factors determining selection for nest-trees. Woodpigeons chose nesting trees that were greater in height, larger in DBH, lower in base of the live crown, in denser stands and at greater distance from tracks.

Conclusions Forest management for Woodpigeon nest habitat selection should focus on controlling the access of vehicles especially trucks, introducing a rotating system of forest utilization for grazing and maintaining (without extending) the cereal crops. These recommendations may assist land managers to plan for continued persistence of this species in Middle Atlas forests.  相似文献

Information on the diet of the Goshawk Accipiter gentilis during the breeding season was collected in Wales during 1991–1993. Diet consisted mainly of birds (87%) and mammals (13%). Forty-five prey species were collected, ten of which were important in numerical or biomass terms: Feral Pigeon Columba livia , Woodpigeon Columba palumbus , Crow/Rook Corvus coronet Corvus frugilegus , Magpie Pica pica , Jay Garrulus glandarius , Mistle Thrush Turdus viscivorus , Song Thrush Turdus philomelos , Blackbird Turdus merula , Grey Squirrel Sciurus carolinensis and Rabbit Oryctolagus cuniculus . Pigeon biomass was important throughout the breeding season and was more important in the diet of nesting Goshawks on higher ground (>250 m). On lower ground, corvids, mammals and pigeons were the main contributors to the Goshawk diet. Rabbits were more frequently taken at lower nesting territories, and thrushes occurred at all altitudes. Mammals, particularly Grey Squirrel, were found in higher numbers in the diet of Goshawks nesting in small woods (<1000 ha) compared with the diet of Goshawks nesting in two large forests ( c . 3500 ha and c . 6100 ha). Goshawks preyed upon juvenile Woodpigeons, corvids and thrushes, and switched from young thrushes to young corvids as the latter became available. Predation peaks on young birds corresponded with the presence of nestling Goshawks in late May to early July. Predation of juvenile prey led to a decrease in mean prey item mass (April-May, 437 g; July, 376 g). No evidence was found to suggest that sexual size dimorphism in Goshawks resulted in partitioning of prey captured during the breeding season. Differences found were probably due to local abundance and vulnerability of prey species rather than specific selection by the two sexes.  相似文献

The distribution of six species of birds within a beech wood was analysed in two winters when beech seeds were abundant. All species were concentrated in patches where seed density was high in one winter, but only two showed a similar distribution in the second winter. The distribution of the other four species, three tits Parus spp. and the Nuthatch Sitta europaea, was positively correlated with low cover. Cover was inversely correlated with seed density. Bird predators were recorded many times during the second winter but not at all during the first winter. It is suggested that predator avoidance was more important than food density for some species in the second winter. The relationships between bird density and both food and cover were sigmoid in shape. The proportion of the seed crop consumed by the birds was estimated at about 4.5%, which was probably more than the amount consumed by mammals. The Woodpigeon Columba palumbus (which took 44% of the total seeds consumed by birds) and the Brambling Fringilla montifringilla (33%) were the most important seed consumers among the birds.  相似文献

基于广东省86个气象观测站1961—2017年冬种生产季的逐日气温资料,采用数理统计方法分析冬种寒害极值的时空分布特征,并运用广义极值分布理论估算市县级的寒害重现期,旨在为当前冬种区域寒害风险评估、预警以及实时气象防灾减灾等提供技术支撑.结果表明: 冬种主产区积寒极值总体呈下降趋势,其中,湛江、梅州自20世纪80年代中期以来显著下降,茂名、韶关和广州自21世纪以来显著下降;极端最低气温总体呈先降后升的趋势,其中,韶关自20世纪80年代后期以来显著上升,但广州近5年开始出现下降趋势.冬种生产季极端积寒极值发生的站次数由多到少的顺序为70年代>21世纪>90年代>60年代>80年代,极端最低气温极值发生站次数由多到少的顺序为60年代>90年代>21世纪>70年代>80年代.2、5、10、20、50和100年一遇的寒害理论预测值呈明显的纬向分布特征,积寒表现为北多南少,极端最低气温表现为南高北低,与寒害实际发生过程中的积寒、极端最低气温分布趋势一致.典型个例表现为南部寒害重现期长、北部短.广东冬种主产区的湛江、茂名寒害重现期长,极端寒害发生的概率小但危害重,其冬种作物面积位居前列,生产上应引起重视.研究成果可为广东各级政府和有关部门指导冬种生产和制定应对气候变化对策提供科学参考.  相似文献

We counted songbirds in crops planted on shooting estates specifically for game management purposes on farmland in Britain and elsewhere in Europe. Winter game crops provide cover and feed areas for pheasants Phasianus colchicus and red-legged partridge Alectoris rufa, while summer game crops are designed to provide brood-rearing cover for these species. In central and southern England, 30 plots of winter game crops, either kale, quinoa or cereal up to 2 ha in area, and 30 adjacent arable-field plots, were surveyed for birds up to six times at monthly intervals during the winter 1997–1998. In the Scottish lowlands, six plots of summer game crops up to 4 ha in area, and adjacent arable fields were surveyed in summer 1999 or 2000. The winter game plots contained more than ten songbirds per hectare in most months, while the adjacent arable-field plots contained less than one. In all three winter game crop types, songbird numbers declined significantly in the second half of the winter while numbers in the arable fields did not. Of the 26 species recorded in the winter game crops, 10 have undergone rapid decline over the last 30 years. Considering these declining species alone, the winter game crops still contained more individuals than the adjacent arable fields throughout the winter. Densities in both the kale and quinoa were higher than in the cereal game crop. The six summer game crops sampled in mid-summer contained on average 2.9 songbirds per hectare, while the adjacent arable fields contained 0.4. Of the 14 species recorded in these summer game crops, eight have undergone rapid or moderate declines over the last 30 years. Although winter and summer game crops are planted in relatively small plots and hence concentrate birds, these plots are widely planted and our results suggest that they benefit birds on farmland.  相似文献

Research has shown a close correlation between the decline of the UK Skylark Alauda arvensis population and the replacement of spring-sown cereals with winter-sown varieties, in which advanced sward development prevents successful multiple nesting attempts and reduces access for foraging. Widescale reversal of sowing times is unlikely for commercial reasons, so research has recently focused on ways of manipulating the sward structure of winter wheat to prolong access to nest-sites and food. An RSPB pilot study investigated leaving small 'undrilled patches' in otherwise conventionally managed winter wheat crops. This option was later incorporated into a fully replicated experimental design, as part of the Sustainable Arable Farming For an Improved Environment (SAFFIE) project. This large consortium-led project aims to test solutions for improving biodiversity within winter-cereal-dominated rotations. The experiment described here ran over 2002–3, with three field-scale 'treatments' on 15 sites in the first year. The treatments compare (1) conventional winter wheat, (2) winter wheat sown in double-normal width (25 cm) wide-spaced rows (WSR) and (3) winter wheat with two 4-m by 4-m undrilled patches per hectare (UP). Results from the 2002 breeding season showed that undrilled patch treatments supported more breeding Skylarks for longer, most likely by aiding accessibility of food. WSR rows were little used by Skylarks and did not improve the abundance of favoured seed and invertebrate food items over conventional crops. Nesting performance and foraging patterns are discussed with reference to invertebrate food abundance and its accessibility, as determined by sward structure.  相似文献

2005年冬季和2006年春季及冬季对洪泽湖东部湿地自然保护区内淮河入洪泽湖河口处(33°06′~33°07′N,118°29′~118°30′E)人工鱼塘生境中鹬类群落进行了研究。设置了4个样地,总面积157hm2。共记录到鹬类19种,其中冬季10种,春季15种。从数量上看,冬季鱼塘中的鸟类总数量远大于春季。在冬春季滞留期间,鹬类种群数量变动比较剧烈,反映了其迁徙集中的特点。鹬类主要在鱼塘生境中休息和觅食,对鱼塘内泥滩和浅水区小生境利用率最高。洪泽湖地区的鱼塘生境和渔业方式使鱼塘成为鹬类冬、春季的重要栖息地。  相似文献

Changes in diet and morphology of Finnish goshawks from 1960s to 1990s   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
We studied the morphology of the goshawk in northern Finland by measuring skin and skeletal characters of 258 museum specimens dated between 1961 and 1997. We predicted a decrease in the size of male goshawks from the 1960s because availability of their main prey, grouse, has decreased since then and grouse have been replaced in the diet by smaller prey during the breeding season. Based on the assumption that winter is the most critical period for females, we predicted that female size should have increased because their winter diet consisted of more and more mountain hare, which is a prey generally larger than grouse. Analyses revealed that male size has indeed decreased since the 1960s, while adult females have increased in size. Our data suggest that these morphological shifts were the result of selective pressures due to changes in diet. We also found changes in the (size-independent) shape of the hawks. Relative wing and tail lengths of adult hawks became longer between 1980 and 1990 compared with the 1960–1970 period, while relative juvenile wing and tail lengths tended to decrease. The North American greater snow goose population has increased dramatically during the last 40 years. We evaluated whether refuge creation, changes in land use on the wintering and staging grounds, and climate warming have contributed to this expansion by affecting the distribution, habitat use, body condition, and migration phenology of birds. We also reviewed the effects of the increasing population on marshes on the wintering grounds, along the migratory routes and on the tundra in summer. Refuges established before 1970 may have contributed to the initial demographic increase. The most important change, however, was the switch from a diet entirely based on marsh plants in spring and winter (rhizomes of Scirpus/Spartina) to one dominated by crops (corn/young grass shoots) during the 1970s and 1980s. Geese now winter further north along the US Atlantic coast, leading to reduced hunting mortality. Their migratory routes now include portions of southwestern Québec where corn production has increased exponentially. Since the mid‐1960s, average temperatures have increased by 1–2.4°C throughout the geographic range of geese, which may have contributed to the northward shift in wintering range and an earlier migration in spring. Access to spilled corn in spring improved fat reserves upon departure for the Arctic and may have contributed to a high fecundity. The population increase has led to intense grazing of natural wetlands used by geese although these habitats are still largely undamaged. The foraging in fields allowed the population to exceed limits imposed by natural marshes in winter and spring, but also prevented permanent damage because of their overgrazing.  相似文献

Nitrate losses in drainflow were measured over five years on eight hydrologically isolated field plots, pairs of which had the following cropping regimes: (a) a 3-yr unfertilised, ungrazed grass ley followed by winter and spring cereals, (b) mixed cropping including winter cover crops, spring cereals, winter cereals, winter fallow and spring beans, (c) a similar sequence to (b) but with a winter fallow replacing the cover crop in the first year and a winter cover crop replacing the fallow in the third year, and (d) continuous winter cereals (control plots). Less nitrate was lost in winter drainflow from winter cover crops than from the winter fallows, but over all five years less nitrate was leached from the continuous cereal plots than from those with mixed cropping. Most of the extra nitrate lost from the mixed cropping regimes probably resulted from mineralisation of the cover crop residues, which occurred at times when subsequent crops could not take advantage of the mineral nitrogen released. Crops grown after the grass ley and cover crops did not benefit from their residues, in terms of either grain yield or of total nitrogen uptake. We conclude that on heavy clay soils in UK a cropping regime of continuous winter cereals offers the best compromise between profitable crop production and minimised nitrate loss to surface waters.  相似文献

Climate change has proven to affect various aspects of the migration of birds. In response to milder winters making the habitat more profitable and increasing the survival of residents, the migratory fraction of partially migratory populations has been predicted to decline. We studied the blue tit Parus caeruleus , a common partial migrant in southern Sweden. The numbers migrating at Falsterbo, a migratory passage site in SW Sweden, has increased during the last decades, in parallel with increasing winter and annual temperatures. Migration data from Falsterbo were compared with yearly indices of the size of the breeding population as estimated by the Swedish National Bird Monitoring Programme. Over the study period 1975–2004, also the breeding population has increased in size. The proportion of blue tits migrating each year did not change over the study period, or possibly even increased slightly, which is in contrast to how climate change has been predicted to influence populations containing both migratory and resident individuals. The most important factors determining the intensity of blue tit migration in a given year was the size of an important winter food source, the beech mast crop (more migrants at lower crops) and the size of the breeding population (more migrants at higher densities).  相似文献

Since the 16th century, red clover has been an important crop in Europe. Since the 1940s, the European areal of red clover has been severely reduced, due to the availability of chemical fertilizers and the growing interest in maize. Nowadays there is a growing interest in red clover again, although some setbacks still remain. An important setback is the low persistence of red clover crops. Clover rot, caused by the ascomycete fungus Sclerotinia trifoliorum Erikss., is a major disease in Europe and reduces the persistence of red clover crops severely. The fungus infects clover plants through ascospores in the autumn, the disease develops during the winter and early spring and can kill many plants in this period. In early spring, black sclerotia, serving as surviving bodies, are formed on infected plants. Sclerotia can survive up to 7 years in the soil (Ohberg, 2006). The development of clover rot is highly dependent on the weather conditions: a humid fall, necessary for the germination of the ascospores and an overall warm winter with short periods of frost are favourable for the disease. Cold and dry winters slow the mycelial growth down too much and prevent the disease from spreading. Clover rot is difficult to control and completely resistant red clover varieties have yet to be developed. Because of the great annual variation in disease severity, plant breeders cannot use natural infection as an effective means to screen for resistant material. Breeding for resistant cultivars is being slowed down by the lack of a bio-test usable in breeding programs. When applying artificial infections, it is necessary to have an idea of the diversity of the pathogen. A diverse population will require resistance screening with multiple isolates. The objective of this research is to investigate the genetic diversity among isolates from the pathogen S. trifoliorum from various European countries. We assessed diversity using a species identification test based on the sequence of the beta-tubulin gene, vegetative compatibility grouping and AFLP.  相似文献

Temperature and heterogeneity of emergence time in oilseed rape   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Emergence of oilseed rape cultivars with known differences in germination profile was examined by controlled sowings in the field at mean temperatures between 2 and 10°C. Early percentiles, up to the 50th in two cultivars (Rocket and Martina) and up to the 20th in a third (Comet), responded to temperature similarly at all sowings, in that 1/time to emergence of a percentile (emergence rate) increased exponentially with temperature above an intercept of-1°C. For these percentiles, emergence occurred at a similar thermally weighted time over the whole range of temperature, indicating the peak of the first flush of seedlings is predictable. Percentiles higher than those cited above displayed increasing non-germination (probably secondary dormancy) as temperature declined towards winter. The maximum non-germination ranged between 50% and 80% among the cultivars. In sowings during and just after winter, the emergence rate of these higher percentiles was lower than at a comparable temperature before winter. A portion of non-germinating seeds of the two most heterogeneous cultivars overwintered and emerged synchronously in April from a range of pre- and post-winter sowings, probably stimulated by increasing diurnal temperature amplitude from 7 to 15K. At low temperature, therefore, cultivars exhibited great heterogeneity in the emergence profile, those with more heterogeneity being more likely to give rise to temporally separate weed or feral populations. The findings are discussed in the context of weediness and transgene movement in the oilseed rape metapopulation.  相似文献

In the 1970's productivity of the crop on the continent was about 15 ton/ha, and dropped continuously until reaching 12 ton/ha in 2004. India's productivity of cassava increased from 10 ton/ha in the 1970's to 28 ton/ha in 2004. Brazil contributed significantly to improving cassava crops through the Instituto Agron?mico de Campinas in the 1960's and 1970's. The Universidade de Brasília released high-protein content hybrids, apomictic clones and explored the potential of indigenous landraces.  相似文献

The house finch (Carpodacus mexicanus) of eastern North America was introduced onto Long Island, New York, around 1940. The source is presumed to be southern California, where ca. 80% of individuals are completely sedentary. The eastern population has become migratory: by the early 1960s, 36% of eastern house finches were performing migratory movements (more than 80 km from their banding site) and that proportion has fluctuated between 28% and 54% in succeeding years. The movements of birds banded during the breeding season and recovered in winter were strongly orientated toward the south-west, and the same pattern was evident in the earliest recoveries (1958 to 1966); recoveries of birds banded during winter and recovered in the breeding season were orientated toward the north-east. The average distance of migration has continued to increase logarithmically. Areas colonized later, as the range expanded, were characterized by initial long migration distances and high proportions of migrants, suggesting that these traits have evolved in the eastern population. Eastern house finches are partial migrants: not all individuals migrate, and birds that migrate some winters remain in breeding areas in others. Younger birds exhibit a stronger tendency to migrate. A very few western (including southern California) house finches moved long distances, but they did so in directions consistent with seasonal migration, indicating that the machinery subserving migratory behaviour pre-existed in the parent population.  相似文献
