Geographic variation in the frequency of colour/pattern morphs of Philaenus spumarius is described at 48 localities in England and Wales. The sites have been divided into four broad environmental categories, two urban and two rural. There is a distinction between the urban and rural groupings in the relative proportions of the colour morphs; in urban localities there is a higher combined frequency of the eight ‘melanic’ morphs. Differences also exist between locality groupings, and between the sexes, in the relative frequencies of the eight morphs within the ‘melanic’ phenotypic category. Morphs limited to the female sex in some other parts of the species range occur among males in British populations. It is suggested that the different dominance hierarchy between the sexes which exists in Fennoscandian populations may not be characteristic of British populations. 相似文献

The environmental factors proximately influencing variable colouration in the bushcricket, Mygalopsis marki , were studied in natural populations and under controlled laboratory conditions. Two major components of variable colouration were identified; a green/brown dimorphism in ground colour hue (dominant wave length) and continuous variation in the darkness of brown insects, representing a contrast between ground colour value (brightness) and the intensity of overlying black pattern. Ground colour hue differed between natural populations in different seasons and at different localities. The proportion of brown individuals was greater in populations developing over late summer than over spring at the same locality, and in populations from drier localities, as indicated by vegetation type, in the same season. Experimental studies showed that colour change occurred at moults, with green colouration promoted by increased water intake in developing nymphs. Ground colour value and pattern differed between natural populations at different localities, but not in different seasons. Ground colour value was less, and pattern was greater, in populations from localities with a dense cover of forbs and grasses. Experimental studies showed that ground colour value and pattern were influenced by the intensity of incident radiation received by developing nymphs, with decreased intensity promoting lower value and greater pattern. 相似文献

Abstract. - 1 An examination of phenotypic variation in colour pattern was carried out on four Eristalis hoverfly species using museum material.
- 2 The amount of phenotypic variation varied substantially among the species with E.arbustorum being the most variable. The other species showed a wide colour pattern range but less variation within that range (E.abusivus and E.nemorum), or a narrow range of colour variation (E.horticola).
- 3 Sexual colour dimorphism was apparent in all four species, but most pronounced in E.abusivus and E.nemorum.
- 4 There were good phenotype-season relationships shown by both sexes in all species, except for female E.abusivus and E.nemorum, with paler insects being more abundant during the warmer summer months.
- 5 Female, but not male, E.arbustorum collected at inland sites were on average paler than those collected at coastal sites. This observation is considered with respect to temperature during the developmental stages.
- 6 The function of colour plasticity in hoverflies is discussed with reference to the need to maintain optimal thermal conditions for activity.

ABSTRACT. In the Drosophila auraria complex (D. auraria Peng, D. biauraria Bock & Wheeler, D. triauraria Bock & Wheeler, D. quadraria Bock & Wheeler and D. subauraria Kimura), D. triauraria from the island of Yaku (30.3N in latitude) and D. quadraria from Taiwan (24.1N) had no or weak diapause, while strains of all the four species from the main islands of Japan had a firm reproductive diapause. These strains entered diapause at short daylengths and the critical daylength was longer and the incidence of diapause higher at a low rather than high temperature. In each species, the critical daylength was longer in strains from higher latitudes. Among sympatric populations of different species, D. subauraria always had the longest critical daylength, while D. auraria had the shortest one. The populations of D. biauraria and D. triauraria had longer critical daylengths than the sympatric populations of D. auraria , but this difference became smaller northwards. Since a longer critical daylength induces diapause earlier in autumn, D. subauraria would enter diapause earliest among these species, and D. auraria would do so latest. The late start of diapause in D. auraria may be related to its adaptation to domestic environments. On the other hand, the adaptive significance of the late start of diapause in northern populations of D. biauraria and D. triauraria is not clear. 相似文献

The common collared lizard ( Crotaphytus collaris) exhibits considerable geographical colour variation, particularly among males. Populations of this diurnal saxicolous iguanian inhabit patches of rocky habitat throughout the species’ broad distribution in North America and are anticipated to experience local differences in selective pressures that influence colouration. Specifically, while social interactions might favour conspicuous colouration, crypsis may be advantageous in interactions with visually orienting predator and prey species. To address the local relationship between lizard and substrate colouration we compared the reflectance spectra of two geographically distant and phenotypically divergent populations of collared lizards with the rocky substrates they inhabit. Our northern study population ( C. c. auriceps in eastern Utah) occurs on red rocks, where males exhibit boldly coloured turquoise bodies and bright yellow heads. In contrast, our southern study population ( C. c. fuscus in southern New Mexico) lives on grey and tan rocks, and males in this location exhibit subdued brown and tan dorsal colours. Spectral comparisons revealed that males in the northern population contrasted strongly with their local rocks, whereas males in the southern population matched their rock colours with reasonably good fidelity. This relationship held under a variety of lighting conditions. Females in both populations were less conspicuously coloured than males, although northern females contrasted more with their rocks than did southern females. In addition, sexual dichromatism was pronounced in the northern population but minimal in the southern population. Finally, sexual size and weight dimorphism was strong in the southern population while being virtually absent in the northern population. A comparison of the local predator and prey assemblages suggests that the conspicuous and sexually dichromatic colouration of the northern population may have evolved in response to reduced pressure from visually orienting predators as well as reduced dependence on saurian prey. © 2002 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2002, 77 , 67–85 相似文献

Twenty-four large adult samples of the meadow spittlebug, Philaenus spumarius , were collected from within a 4 times 3 km area containing Cardiff docks, south Wales. All samples are highly polymorphic for colour and pattern and show marked geographic variation in the combined frequency of the eight melanic morphs (from <15% to > 75%). Maximum melanic phenotype frequencies in both sexes coincide with dock wharfs currently containing large accumulations of pulverized coal and these samples are heavily contaminated with small coal particles. However, interpretation of this association is complicated by the existence, until 1976, of a smokeless fuel factory causing local air pollution immediately adjacent to the area of highest melanic frequency. It is suggested that the association of high levels of melanism in P. spumarius with areas heavily contaminated with particulate pollutants is due to direct selective effects of small particles favouring melanies. 相似文献

The genus Pimelia is represented in Sicily by the two species P. grossa and P. rugulosa, the latter with the two subspecies P. r. rugulosa and P. r. sublaevigata. A third subspecies, P. r. apula, is present only in Puglia. The phylogeographic history of this genus in Sicily was reconstructed using sequences of the complete cox2 gene, applying phylogenetic and molecular dating methods. Phylogenetic analysis confirmed the monophyly of the two species, as well as the subdivision of P. rugulosa in the three morphological subspecies. One previously undetected and deeply divergent lineage was described that is geographically related to the Hyblean massif. It is therefore suggested that the deep divergence of the two major P. rugulosa clades in Sicily reflects an ancient separation between the Hyblean massif and the other land masses of Sicily. Dating analysis confirmed that the timing of P. rugulosa genetic divergence is compatible with the formation of the Hyblean massif. Furthermore, P. rugulosa populations of the Hyblean massif, whose taxonomy has been historically problematic, display levels of genetic divergence comparable to those observed at the species level. The possibility that this new lineage might deserve species rank is presented. 相似文献

Background: Flower colour variation among populations may result from the spatial variation of selective agents. The structure of phenotypic variation informs on the ecological processes related to this variation. Variation in floral traits is mainly attributed to variation in the pollinator fauna, while variation in vegetative traits is usually linked to abiotic factors or herbivores. Aims: We investigated the geographical variation of flower colour (and correlated traits) in Gentiana lutea and the relationship with the variation in abiotic factors. Methods: Phenotypic variation (flower colour, petal length, petal width, stalk length, leaf length, flower number, petal number and number of basal leaves) was assessed in 429 plants of 12 populations located at north-west Iberia. Additionally, we obtained data on the geographical coordinates, elevation, temperature, rainfall and radiation for each population. Results: Populations mostly differed in flower colour, from orange to yellow from west to the east. Abiotic factors were unrelated to variation in either floral or vegetative traits. Conclusions: Phenotypic variation among G. lutea populations does not result from adaptation to environmental factors. Other factors, such as historical events or selective pressure exerted by biotic interactions, might explain the flower colour variation in G. lutea along the Cantabrian Range. 相似文献

The colour pattern of the Gran Canarian skink is described with eight independent colour pattern characters. Significant geographic variation occurs in each character. There are generally high levels of congruence between the patterns of geographic variation in each character although some differences exist. In canonical variate analyses, the first canonical variate expresses most of the among-locality variation in colour pattern, indicating a largely unidimensional pattern. Patterns of geographic variation in the colour pattern are portrayed by contouring. This reveals north-east/south-west clines for seven of the individual characters and the generalized pattern (CV1). Four causal hypotheses were erected which predicted four different unidimensional patterns of geographic variation. Mantel tests and partial correlation analyses were used to compare the observed patterns of microgeographic variation with the four hypothesized patterns. This method suggests differential selection occurring between ecotones as the cause of the microgeographic variation. Microgeographic variation in some aspects of the colour pattern can be explained by selection for different anti-predator strategies in the hot, arid southern areas vs the cooler, lusher northern areas. 相似文献

Nine karyotypes are described within a single species of common New Zealand tree weta. Their diploid numbers range from 11 to 25. The distribution of the karyotypes suggests that each had a single origin except the 17-karyotype which was the most common karyotype and had a disjunct distribution. The overall level of allozyme diversity observed is similar to that seen within many widespread taxa. The distribution of allozyme alleles did not coincide with the distribution of karyotypes within this species and the Neighbour-Joining tree was not concordant with the chromosome based sub-divisions of the species. Thus, no evidence was found to suggest that chromosomal differentiation has been acting as a barrier to the flow of alleles within H. thoracica. The lack of concordance of genetic markers is thought to result from rapid chromosome radiation and reticulate evolution. Northland peninsula of North Island, New Zealand is a region of high chromosomal and allozymic diversity in H. thoracica. This may have resulted from geographic isolation during the Pliocene when Northland formed an archipelago of many small low-lying islands. 相似文献

Seven species in three species groups (Decim, Cassini and Decula) of periodical cicadas ( Magicicada) occupy a wide latitudinal range in the eastern United States. To clarify how adult body size, a key trait affecting fitness, varies geographically with climate conditions and life cycle, we analysed the relationships of population mean head width to geographic variables (latitude, longitude, altitude), habitat annual mean temperature (AMT), life cycle and species differences. Within species, body size was larger in females than males and decreased with increasing latitude (and decreasing habitat AMT), following the converse Bergmann's rule. For the pair of recently diverged 13‐ and 17‐year species in each group, 13‐year cicadas were equal in size or slightly smaller on average than their 17‐year counterparts despite their shorter developmental time. This fact suggests that, under the same climatic conditions, 17‐year cicadas have lowered growth rates compared to their 13‐years counterparts, allowing 13‐year cicadas with faster growth rates to achieve body sizes equivalent to those of their 17‐year counterparts at the same locations. However, in the Decim group, which includes two 13‐year species, the more southerly, anciently diverged 13‐year species ( Magicicada tredecim) was characterized by a larger body size than the other, more northerly 13‐ and 17‐year species, suggesting that local adaptation in warmer habitats may ultimately lead to evolution of larger body sizes. Our results demonstrate how geographic clines in body size may be maintained in sister species possessing different life cycles. 相似文献

A study of geographic variation in three subspecies of garter snake (Thamnophis sirtalis sirtalis, T. s. parietalis, T. s. semifasciata) in the north-central United States indicates patterns of irregular non-clinal microgeographic variation for 40 characters of coloration, scalation, and internal anatomy. Multivariate analyses show that geographically close populations are not always phenetically close and that overall differentiation of the phenotype is greater in males than in females. Univariate and multivariate studies indicate that T. s. semifasciata Cope 1892, restricted to the Chicago area, is not uniform within its small range and that it has no constant distinguishing features: it is shown to be taxonomically invalid. 相似文献

In north Georgia populations of the soldier beetle, Chauliognathus pennsylvanicus , the length of the elytral spot varies clinally. At the southern end of a 200 km cline the distribution of spot length is unimodal with longer spot lengths predominating while at the northern end of the cline the distribution is bimodal but with shorter spot lengths being more frequent. North of the cline only short elytral spot lengths are observed, while the converse is true south of the cline. The strength of assortative mating on the basis of elytral spot length increases from south to north along the cline, resulting in complete pre-mating isolation between short and long spot length morphs at the north end of the cline. Laboratory mate choice tests indicate that assortative mating in the field is not the result of differential timing of activity or microhabitat choice but rather that it represents a real behavioural preference. Individuals from monomorphic populations on either side of the cline do not mate assortatively in the laboratory, indicating that reproductive isolation has evolved on the cline. 相似文献

The geographic variation of 33 morphological characters of the gall-forming aphid Pemphigus populicaulis is studied for 118 localities east of 100 oW longitude. Variation can be partitioned into within-gall, among-gall and among-locality components. Among localities variation ranges from 26 to 54%, being significant for all characters. Variation among galls within localities ranges from 24 to. 56%, that within-galls from 8 to 4796. The design of the study permits computation of character correlation matrices within and among localities. Gall size is correlated with tnorphometric characters only on an interlocality but not on an intralocality basis. Interlocalily correlations are a function of intralocality correlations, confirming earlier predictions. There is little correlation between characters of stem mother and alate morphotypes within localities, whereas among localities such correlation is appreciable. This phenomenon may be caused by aspects ol the environment that vary among localities but remain reasonably constant through the earlv life cycle of the aphid. When subjected to factor analysis both correlation matrices yield four factors. Multiple discriminant analysis of the data set results in five interpretable significant axes. Maps are furnished for characters representing the independent dimensions of variation and for discriminant function scores. The patterns of variation can be shown to be significantly nonrandom by Mantel's test and by spatial autocorrelation analysis. All variables are significantly positively autocorrelated at 200 km, many at 400 km and a few at 600 km; few general statements can be made about significant autocorrelations at higher distances. The positive autocorrelation at relatively short distances may be related to the pool of clones from which the genotypes of any one locality sample are taken. There are three correlogram patterns that can be associated with four clusters of variation patterns of characters. The separate patterns presumably cannot be explained by a single microevolutionary process. 相似文献

While large‐scale genomic approaches are increasingly revealing the genetic basis of polymorphic phenotypes such as colour morphs, such approaches are almost exclusively conducted in species with high‐quality genomes and annotations. Here, we use Pool‐Seq data for both genome assembly and SNP frequency estimation, followed by scanning for FST outliers to identify divergent genomic regions. Using paired‐end, short‐read sequencing data from two groups of individuals expressing divergent phenotypes, we generate a de novo rough‐draft genome, identify SNPs and calculate genomewide FST differences between phenotypic groups. As genomes generated by Pool‐Seq data are highly fragmented, we also present an approach for super‐scaffolding contigs using existing protein‐coding data sets. Using this approach, we reanalysed genomic data from two recent studies of birds and butterflies investigating colour pattern variation and replicated their core findings, demonstrating the accuracy and power of a Pool‐Seq‐only approach. Additionally, we discovered new regions of high divergence and new annotations that together suggest novel parallels between birds and butterflies in the origins of their colour pattern variation. 相似文献

Morphological and life-history variation within and between 23 European populations of the introduced and widespread perennial Solidago canadensis L. sensu lato (Asteraceae) was investigated. The populations differed significantly in all 19 characters measured. Coefficients of variation and intraclass-correlations were high for characters related to growth. Floral characters (involucral height, number of disk florets, number of ray florets), and pubescence of stems and leaves varied considerably among sampled shoots, but their frequency distributions were unimodal and the coefficients of variation low. The first three principal components explained 48% of the variation and formed no dusters among the shoots. Several character means correlated with latitude, indicating clinal variation among the populations. Comparison of variation in floral and leaf characters with data from the native range suggests that S. canadensis s.l. naturalized in Europe belongs to a taxon that is close to S. canadensis var. scabra (Muhl.) Torr. & Gray ( S. altissima L.), despite the reported diploid chromosome number of this taxon in Europe. 相似文献

Adaptive hypotheses about colour variation are widespread in behavioural ecology, and several methods of objective colour assessment have been proposed and validated for use in a wide variety of taxa. However, to date, the most objective and reliable methods of assessing colour are not readily applied to wild animals. In the present study, we present a simple method for assessing colour in unrestrained, wild subjects using digital photography. The method we describe uses a digital camera, a colour standard, and colour analysis software, and can be used to measure any part of the visible colour spectrum. We demonstrate that the method: (1) is accurate and precise across different light conditions; (2) satisfies previous criteria regarding linearity and red, green, and blue equality; and (3) can be independently validated visually. In contrast with previous digital methods, this method can be used under natural light conditions and can be readily applied to subjects in their natural habitat. To illustrate this, we use the method to measure chest colour in wild geladas ( Theropithecus gelada ). Unique among primates, geladas have a red patch of skin on their chest and neck, which, for males, is thought to be a sexually selected signal.
