Summary Growth of pollen tubes and seed set were compared after hand pollination in situ and in vitro in two self-incompatible species, Trifolium pratense and Trifolium repens. Adhesion of pollen grains to the stigma was greater in vitro for both species. After cross-pollination, in vitro culture gave a significant increase in the cumulative growth of pollen tubes in pistils of T. pratense compared to in situ conditions. After selfing in T. repens, pollen tube growth was significantly increased by in vitro culture of florets. Seed set after crossing in situ and in vitro was similar for both species. Seed set after selfing in vitro was not increased in T. pratense. Several genotypes of T. repens were classified as very good, good and poor selfers based on their capacity for seed set following selfing in situ. In vitro pollination increased self seed formation by 1.7-, 18.0- and 31.0-fold for each class, respectively. Ovules located nearest to the style were fertilized more often after selfing than after crossing.  相似文献

132 cultivated populations (2x–16x) of 15 arctic-alpine species ofDraba were investigated to clarify a possible relationship between reproductive strategies and polyploid evolution in the genus. The populations were exclusively sexual and produced viable seed after spontaneous self-pollination, but showed large variation both in traits promoting cross-pollination and in autogamous fruit and seed set. Traits promoting cross-pollination, e.g., floral display, protogyny, and delayed selfing, were positively correlated, and these traits were negatively correlated with autogamous fruit and seed set. All diploid and many polyploid populations had high autogamous seed set and small, unscented, non-protogynous, and rapidly selfing flowers. In contrast, all populations with low autogamous seed set and large, scented, and strongly protogynous flowers with distinctly delayed selfing were polyploid. These results are consistent with those previously obtained from enzyme electrophoresis, suggesting that the genetically depauperate diploids are extreme inbreeders and that the highly fixed-heterozygous polyploids vary from extreme inbreeders to mixed maters. The reproductive data lend additional support to the hypothesis that allopolyploidy in arcticDraba serves as an escape from genetic depauperation caused by uniparental inbreeding at the diploid level.  相似文献

In the Bromeliaceae, hybrids have been engineered for horticultural purposes; in addition, hybrids have been observed in natural habitats. We investigated the hybridization potential of three sympatric species of Tillandsia inhabiting secondary forests and shaded coffee plantations in the central mountains of Veracruz, Mexico. The studied species (T. juncea, T. polystachia and T. variabilis) show overlap in flowering phenology and are believed to share pollinators. We compared the floral morphology of the species, performed controlled intra- and interspecific pollinations, and recorded pollen tube growth, fruit and seed set, as well as seed germination. Flower size differed among the species, but stamen and stigma heights were similar between pairs of species, which would facilitate interspecific pollen exchange. Pollen tubes reached the ovary in interspecific crosses. The three species showed interspecific cross-compatibility, as all crosses resulted in development of mature fruit and viable seeds. Tillandsia juncea achieved the highest fruit set, whereas T. variabilis showed the highest seed set. Seed set as a result of agamospermy, autogamy, geitonogamy and interspecific cross-pollination did not differ among the species. The findings suggest that pre- and post-pollination barriers are weak among the three species of Tillandsia, which thus could potentially hybridize in natural sympatric populations.  相似文献

The fertility relationships ofOrnithogalum umbellatum, O. angustifolium and 9 related taxa were studied.O. umbellatum andO. angustifolium, which are not interfertile, are both recognized as a comparium. Pollination of five species belonging to theO. umbellatum/angustifolium polyploid complex, i.e.O. umbellatum, O. angustifolium, O. baeticum, O. monticolum andO. algeriense, resulted in a moderate seed set. However, the seeds obtained after these interspecific crosses did not germinate. Six related species, i.e.O. exscapum, O. nivale, O. comosum, O. collinum, O. gussonei andO. woronowii showed a very low seed set after being crossed. One exception occurs:O. nivale ×O. exscapum. The seed set was also low after the complex species had been crossed with some related species, but there was one exception: both reciprocal crosses betweenO. monticolum andO. woronowii yielded some viable seeds. No other interspecific crosses gave rise to viable seeds. Bulbil-producing species have a lower seed set after self-pollination than species which do not produce bulbils.Biosystematic Studies on theOrnithogalum umbellatum/angustifolium Complex IV.—Previous contributions: (I–III):Raamsdonk (1982, 1985a, 1985b).  相似文献

Hybridization is a common phenomenon in Daphnia (Cladocera; Anomopoda); interspecific hybrids have been found between several species and hybrids are found in many European lakes. Although much information on the morphology, ecology and genetics of hybrids is available, little is known about the level of reproductive isolation among species or about the relative fitness of hybrids and parental species. In order to facilitate studies on differentiation and speciation processes and comparative experimental studies on hybrids and recombinant genotypes, we present the first successful laboratory crossing experiments of two different Daphnia species, D. galeata and D. cucullata. Males and sexual females from two D. galeata and two D. cucullata clones were reciprocally crossed, juveniles hatched from resting eggs and reared until maturity. Hatching and juvenile survival rates of hybrids were relatively low (12.1% and 24%, respectively). D. galeata and D. cucullata clones vary in their level of successful interspecific matings and in the number of subsequent offspring. In general, hybrid crosses between D. cucullata females and D. galeata males were more successful than reciprocal crosses.  相似文献

We investigated the reproductive system of the threatened taxon Dombeya acutangula ssp. acutangula Cav. (Sterculiaceae), an endemic tree of the Mascarene archipelago (Indian Ocean). A controlled crossing experiment was performed in two natural populations located in the remnants of the low-elevation dry forest on the island of La Réunion. Active pollination, probably mainly by insects, was necessary for reproduction in this species. Individuals varied in their degree of self-sterility from 0 to 100%. Outcrossing between nearby individuals produced lower seed set than did crosses between more distant individuals within one of the two tested populations. The variation in reproductive success on selfing and in the different types of crosses could result from inbreeding depression causing embryo death, and we provide evidence that progenies from selfing have lower seed size and quality. However, for inbreeding depression to account for the dramatic variation in seed set found in our crossing experiment, the distribution of genetic load and number of lethal factors required appear unrealistic. We favour an alternative interpretation, that D. acutangula possesses an incompatibility system similar to that found in other Sterculiaceae species such as Theobroma cacao L. Such an incompatibility system allows a certain amount of selfing, and different individuals vary in their degree of self-incompatibility. The low success of crosses among close neighbours in one population suggests that there was spatial structure for incompatibility alleles in that population. This could partly explain the decline of the species in fragmented and disturbed habitats, since relatedness at incompatibility loci may increase in small or isolated population and thus reduce mate availability. Ten species in the genusSilene sectt.Siphonomorpha andAuriculatae were crossed artificially involving 612 crosses to test inter- and infraspecific, intervarietal and intersectional crossability. In sect.Siphonomorpha all interspecific crosses (between diploids) failed due to cross- or seed-incompatibility; however, intervarietal crosses betweenS. gigantea var.gigantea andS. gigantea var.incana produced hybrids. In sect.Auriculatae hybrids were produced betweenS. vallesia andS. boryi, both tetraploids, but crosses between these and the diploid species were unsuccessful. The delimitation and status of the species in both sections was supported by the crossing results.  相似文献

We describe the occurrence of D. galeata×longispina hybrids in two lakes of western Norway. Parental species and interspecific hybrids were characterised by both nuclear and mitochondrial molecular markers. In one of the populations, hybrids were shown to dominate the population over several years. A few individuals in both populations were probably not F1 hybrids, but possibly backcrosses or F2 hybrids. Most (possibly all) F1 hybrids were of D. galeata maternal origin. In addition, interspecific hybrids could be identified based on morphological characters, which were intermediate between the parental species. Interspecific hybridisation between these two species is remarkable, since they are distantly related.  相似文献

Spontaneous outcrossing of different malesterile rapeseed lines and transgenic hybrids with a population of a weedy species, Raphanus raphanistrum L., has led to the harvest of numerous seeds showing a size dimorphism. Flow cytometry analysis correlated with chromosome counts showed that all of the large seeds belonged to rapeseed, whereas the small seeds were a mixture of mostly interspecific triploid hybrids, with some trigenomic amphidiploids, diploid and haploid rapeseed plants. Significant differences were revealed between the rapeseed lines and transgenic hybrids in their ability to form interspecific hybrids with Raphanus raphanistrum under natural conditions. Resistance to the herbicide Basta was properly expressed in the triploid and amphidiploid hybrids. Low male fertility of the interspecific triploid hybrids was not correlated with seed set in the subsequent generation.  相似文献

Summary Pearl millet, Pennisetum americanum L. Leeke-napiergrass, Pennisetum purpureum Schum. amphiploids (2n=42) were crossed with pearl millet X Pennisetum squamulatum Fresen. interspecific hybrids (2n=41) to study the potential of germplasm transfer from wild Pennisetum species to pearl millet. These two interspecific hybrids were highly cross-compatible and more than two thousand trispecific progenies were produced from 17 double crosses. All doublecross hybrids were perennial and showed a wide range of morphological variations intermediate to both parents in vegetative and inflorescence characteristics. Some crosses resulted in sublethal progenies. Chromosomes paired mainly as bivalents (¯x15.88) or remained as univalents. At metaphase I, trivalents, quadrivalents, an occasional hexavalent and a high frequency of bivalents indicated some homeology among the genomes of the three species. Delayed separation of bivalents, unequal segregation of multivalents, lagging chromosomes, and chromatin bridges were observed at anaphase I. Although approximately 93% of the double-cross hybrids were male-sterile, pollen stainability in male-fertile plants ranged up to 94%. Seed set ranged from 0 to 37 seed per inflorescence in 71 plants under open-pollinated conditions. Apomictic embryo sac development was observed in double-cross progenies when crosses involved a pearl millet x P. squamulatum apomictic hybrid as pollen parent. These new double-cross hybrids may serve as bridging hybrids to transfer genes controlling apomixis and other plant characteristics from the wild Pennisetum species to pearl millet.  相似文献

Differences in male morphology and mating behaviors are thought to confer species sexual isolation between sailfin and shortfin species of mollies. This study used interspecific crosses between the sailfin molly, P. latipinna, and the shortfin molly, P. mexicana, to investigate patterns of inheritance of morphological traits and behavioral rates of three mating behaviors in F1 hybrid males. The two parental species showed clear species differences with respect to the length of the dorsal fin and dorsal fin ray number. First generation hybrid males were intermediate between the two parental species for dorsal fin length and fin ray number, suggesting autosomal control of this trait with little effect of dominance by genes from either parental species. Parental species showed clear species differences in their rates of courtship displays. Unlike the pattern for dorsal fin morphology, F1 hybrid males showed a clear distinction in display rates with respect to the direction of the interspecific cross. Male hybrids whose sires were P. latipinna had courtship display rates that were up to three times higher than the rates of displays performed by hybrid males whose fathers were P. mexicana. The distribution of phenotypes between the parental species and that of hybrid males sired by that parental species was nearly identical. Such a pattern suggests the influence of Y-linked genes on the inheritance of courtship display rates in mollies.  相似文献

Summary Attempts at the reciprocal cross between Petunia parodii and P. inflata using standard emasculation and pollination techniques failed. Limited pollen tube growth down the style in reciprocal crosses led to reproductive isolation between the self-compatible P. parodii and self-incompatible P. inflata. The interspecific hybrid was successfully produced by bud-pollination of P. parodii with P. inflata as the male parent in 22 percent of attempts, but not in the opposite direction. In vitro pollination of P. parodii ovaries with P. inflata pollen also produced hybrids. The small size of the ovary made it technically impossible to use P. inflata as the female parent for in vitro pollination. The interspecific hybrids were intermediate, as compared to the two parents, for six of the seven plant and flower characters measured. Furthermore, the hybrids had high pollen fertility, set abundant seed upon self-pollination, and readily inter-crossed with the parental species. The results are consistent with a high degree of chromosomal homology in the parental species and with minor genetic divergency leading to reproductive isolation that is pre-zygotic in nature. Overcoming the barriers to cross-incompatibility by practical techniques resulted in fertile interspecific hybrids that segregated for parental characters. The potential value of employing the parental species in somatic hybridization experiments is discussed.Michigan Agricultural Experiment Station Journal Article No. 8404  相似文献

Apomixis evolves from a sexual background and usually is linked to polyploidization. Pseudogamous gametophytic apomicts, which require a fertilization to initiate seed development, of various ploidy levels frequently co‐occur with their lower‐ploid sexual ancestors, but the stability of such mixed populations is affected by reproductive interferences mediated by cross‐pollination. Thereby, reproductive success of crosses depends on the difference in ploidy levels of mating partners, that is, on tolerance of deviation from the balanced ratio of maternal versus paternal genomes. Quality of pollen can further affect reproductive success in intercytotype pollinations. Cross‐fertilization, however, can be avoided by selfing which may be induced upon pollination with mixtures of self‐ and cross‐pollen (i.e., mentor effects). We tested for reproductive compatibility of naturally co‐occurring tetraploid sexuals and penta‐ to octoploid apomicts in the rosaceous species Potentilla puberula by means of controlled crosses. We estimated the role of selfing as a crossing barrier and effects of self‐ and cross‐pollen quality as well as maternal: paternal genomic ratios in the endosperm on reproductive success. Cross‐fertilization of sexuals by apomicts was not blocked by selfing, and seed set was reduced in hetero‐ compared to homoploid crosses. Thereby, seed set was negatively related to deviations from balanced parental genomic ratios in the endosperm. In contrast, seed set in the apomictic cytotypes was not reduced in hetero‐ compared to homoploid crosses. Thus, apomictic cytotypes either avoided intercytotype cross‐fertilization through selfing, tolerated intercytotype cross‐fertilizations without negative effects on reproductive success, or even benefitted from higher pollen quality in intercytotype pollinations. Our experiment provides evidence for asymmetric reproductive interference, in favor of the apomicts, with significantly reduced seed set of sexuals in cytologically mixed populations, whereas seed set in apomicts was not affected. Incompleteness of crossing barriers further indicated at least partial losses of a parental genomic endosperm balance requirement.  相似文献

Congeneric invasive species reduce genetic endemism of native species through hybridization and sometimes cause extinction through genetic or demographic swamping. In the range of Magnolia stellata, a native rare subtree species, Magnolia kobus, an invasive planted/escaped tree species, can also be found. In order to examine possible natural hybridization between the two species, a reciprocal cross-pollination experiment was conducted, and fruit set, seed set, female reproductive success in seed formation (FRS; fruit set × seed set) and seed weight were estimated. With M. stellata as the maternal tree, there were no significant differences in all measurements between intra- and interspecific crosses. With M. kobus as the maternal tree, there were also no significant differences in all measurements except fruit set. These results suggest that there are no reproductive barriers between the two species and planted/escaped M. kobus near the natural habitat of M. stellata presents a threat through hybridization.  相似文献

The degree of relationships withinLactuca sativa and three wild relativesL. serriola, L. saligna, andL. virosa was studied by observing the performance, vigour and fertility of the F 1 hybrids obtained from crosses made in and between the four species. The crosses ofL. saligna ×L. virosa and the reciprocal crosses produced no hybrids.L. saligna andL. virosa are the least related of the four species.L. sativa ×L. serriola and the reciprocal crosses were successful and produced fertile hybrids These two species are genetically very closely related.L. saligna is known to produce, as a female parent, hybrids withL. sativa andL. serriola. Now the reciprocal cross was successful for the first time, so the unability to obtain hybrids in the past was based on the choice of accessions and not caused by unilateral incompatibility.L. virosa ×L. sativa and the reciprocal combination produced hybrids. The combinationL. serriola ×L. virosa produced hybrids with very limited fertility. In contrast to earlier reports (sterile hybrids) one combination of the reciprocal cross too produced hybrids with very limited fertility.—Some of theL. saligna ×L. sativa (and reciprocal) hybrids were found to look strikingly likeL. serriola. This adds evidence for the descent ofL. serriola andL. sativa:L. saligna also made part of the ancestral complex of the cultivated lettuce.  相似文献

Summary Interspecific crosses between Zinnia angustifolia clones (maternal parents) and Z. elegans lines (paternal parents) were performed to investigate postzygotic barriers among Z. angustifolia X Z. elegans hybrids and to determine influence of parental genotype on embryonic and vegetative development of interspecific hybrids. Variation in percentage of emerged seedlings (PES) and percentage of morphologically normal hybrids (PNH) was attributable to Z. angustifolia clones with minor or no effect attributable to Z. elegans lines. Heterogeneity in PES values among Z. angustifolia clones was due to differences in amount of hybrid embryo breakdown and ungerminable seed. Cytological observations of normal and abnormal interspecific hybrids revealed similar chromosome numbers (2n=23) but indicated a low mitotic index for abnormal hybrids. Genetic analysis of PES and PNH suggested control by multiple genes inherited from the Z. angustifolia genome. Adequate sampling of the Z. angustifolia gene pool would permit exploitation of genetic variability present within the species and allow improvements in PES and PNH for interspecific hybrids.Scientific Article No. A-4479, Contribution No. 7472 of the Maryland Agricultural Experiment Station, Department of Horticulture  相似文献

Experiments were performed on the synthesis and fertility of interspecific hybrids in Carex section Acutae.
Crosses between members of a few pairs of species gave as high a seed set as crosses within species. Other pairs of species showed some degree of intersterility in their primary crosses, but the level of seed set varied widely according to which individuals of the species were crossed. The investigated species formed two groups, within which interfertility was high, and between which interfertility was low. These groups are compared with the taxonomic subsections of the Acutae and some amendments in the composition of the subsections are suggested.
In interspecific backcrosses, it was found that seed set was impaired only if the hybrid was the female parent. The pollen grains of interspecific hybrids were found to be more variable in size than those of non-hybrids.
Results obtained in these investigations confirm that C. juncella is conspecific with C. nigra and that north-west European plants of C. recta are actually interspecific hybrids of two types.  相似文献

Nicotiana section Alatae contains eight species with variable flower sizes and morphologies. Section members readily hybridize in the glasshouse, but no hybrids have been observed in natural sympatric and parapatric populations. To investigate interspecific crossing relationships with respect to mechanisms preventing hybridization, all members of section Alatae were intercrossed in a complete diallel. We found positive correlation between the pistil length of the pollen donor and interspecific seed set relative to the conspecific cross. Pollen tube growth rate and pollen donor pistil length were positively correlated as well. Furthermore, pollen from short-pistil members of section Alatae could only grow a maximum distance proportional to, but greater than, their own pistil lengths. Our results show that pollen tube growth capacity (i.e., rate and distance), provides a hybridization barrier in long-pistil species × short-pistil species crosses. We also found another hybridization barrier not specifically related to pollen tube growth capacity in short-pistil species × long-pistil species. Taken together, these barriers can generally be described by a ‘pistil-length mismatch’ rule; in section Alatae, pollen has the most success fertilizing ovules from species with pistil lengths similar to their own. This rule could contribute to hybridization barriers in Section Alatae because the species display dramatically different pistil lengths. Pollination of the alpine herbDianthus glacialis was studied in a population in the Swiss Alps in 1991 and 1992. Only one insect species,Zygaena exulans (Lepidoptera), was observed to visit the flowers ofD. glacialis. Pollen loads onZ. exulans indicate that it is an effective pollinator ofD. glacialis. In 1991,Z. exulans frequently visited flowers ofD. glacialis. However, in 1992 almost no visits could be observed. Despite the occurrence of pollinators and the conspicuous flowers ofD. glacialis, there are strong indications that this plant is mainly selfing: (1) anthesis of individual flowers is short (c. one and a half days), (2) protandry, although pronounced in otherDianthus spp., is absent, (3) nectar production is low, (4) odour production is weak, (5) seed production by spontaneous selfing is high, (6) seed set in emasculated flowers is extremely low and (7) the seed/ovule ratio is distinctly higher inD. glacialis than in outcrossing plants.—Selfing inD. glacialis could have evolved under a shortage of pollinators during the glaciation periods. Present levels of cross-pollination byZ. exulans have apparently not been sufficient to reverse the pollination mechanism ofD. glacialis from selfing to outcrossing.  相似文献

Coffea liberica Hiern includes C. liberica var. liberica (LIB) from western Africa and C. liberica var. dewevrei (DEW) from central Africa. This geographical distribution also includes cultivated C. canephora for which a within-species clustering in two interfertile groups is known. In this study, genetic differentiation between LIB and DEW was evaluated on the basis of morphological traits, molecular markers (AFLP) and male fertility of F1 hybrids. The results were also compared with the within-species differentiation in C. canephora. The morphological traits differed significantly but the distributions overlapped. By contrast, LIB and DEW constituted two distinct groups with high genetic differentiation (Gst=0.25) when using AFLP markers. In addition, the pollen viability of F1 hybrids between LIB and DEW was weak (44.2%) and similar to interspecific C. canephora x DEW F1 hybrids or C. canephora x LIB F1 hybrids, indicating that there are marked reproductive barriers between LIB and DEW.  相似文献
