This study examined the latitudinal gradient of species diversity of rocky intertidal sessile assemblages on the slopes of rocks along the Northwestern Pacific coast of Japan, located between 31°N and 43°N, by explicitly incorporating an hierarchical spatial scale into the monitoring design. The specific questions were to examine: (1) whether there is a latitudinal gradient of regional diversity, (2) how spatial components of the regional diversity (local diversity and turnover diversity) vary with latitude depending on spatial scale, and (3) whether the latitudinal gradient differs between different measures of species diversity, i.e. species richness and Simpsons diversity index. We measured coverage and the presence or absence of all sessile organisms in a total of 150 census plots established at five shores in each of six regions. The results showed that there were clear latitudinal gradients in regional species richness and in species turnover among shores. However, these patterns were not reflected in smaller-scale local species richness. For Simpsons diversity index, there was no evidence of latitudinal clines either in regional diversity or in spatial components. These results suggest that relative abundance of common species does not vary along latitude, while the number of rare species increases with decreasing latitude.

Hotspots of biodiversity (taxonomic richness, endemism, taxonomic affinities between communities) at small (), medium () and larger () scales of diversity were examined for marine sponge populations throughout tropical and subtropical Australia, with the faunas of Vanuatu, Palau and Thailand used as outgroups for comparison. Spatial and numerical (ordination) models and hierarchic classifications delineated 37 and 13 scale faunas from 1343 investigated localities using a pool of 2324 species. The Australian taxonomic literature was ignored completely to avoid the many still unresolved taxonomic problems and to allow equal treatment of collecting localities. Richness and endemism varied considerably between marine areas, for species and genera at all spatial scales, with gradients strongly corroborated by hierarchic taxonomic relationships between faunas. Richness and endemism were equally effective indicators of biodiversity hotspots, whereas species-level vs. genus-level data produced differing patterns, with the latter substantially underestimating biodiversity and marine area relationships, and consequently a poor 'surrogate for species data. Patterns of taxa shared between adjacent areas were more informative than richness and endemism data alone, as they more accurately reflect the processes in these areas. Latitudinal gradients in sponge diversity were not evident, whereas various environmental factors were prominent at scales and biogeographic factors were prominent at and scales of diversity. An example of a small () scale diversity fauna revealed substantial spatial heterogeneity (mean of 41 spp/locality, 33% apparently endemic, and a total fauna of 226 spp) containing few ubiquitous species (40% or 78 spp), with adjacent reefs having relatively low faunal similarity (mean 33%). Faunas at the medium () scale of diversity were less heterogeneous (mean 127 spp/region, 27% apparently endemic to a particular region, with a total fauna of 2324 spp), containing a significantly larger dataset (829 spp) found in >1 region to assess taxonomic affinities. At the larger () scale of diversity faunas were far more heterogeneous (mean 263 spp/region, 47% apparently endemic to a particular region) containing a smaller dataset (only 588 spp or 26% of the fauna with >1 species/region) to assess taxonomic affinities. Consequently, sponge faunas at the and scales of diversity are ineffective and inappropriate as biodiversity models, respectively, with scale diversity also less relevant as a practical tool for marine resource management and marine area conservation.  相似文献

The relationships among alpha and beta diversity indices, computed from 141 randomly sampled quadrats, and the vegetation classes obtained by multi-spectral satellite image classification, were used as a strategy for mapping plant diversity in a tropical landscape mosaic. A relatively high accuracy of the land cover map was revealed by the overall accuracy assessment and the Cohen's Kappa statistic. Species accumulation models were used to evaluate how representative the sample size was the different vegetation types. A standard one-way, between-subjects ANOVA confirmed a significant reduction of the within-class variance of plant diversity with respect to their total variance across the landscape. Computed uniformity indices, to assess the internal uniformity of vegetation classes on the diversity indices, confirmed the goodness of the mapped classes in stratifying variability of plant diversity. This allowed for the use of the mapped classes as spatial interpolators of plant diversity values for estimation and up-scaling purposes. Finally, it was revealed that the plant diversity of the landscape depends, to a large extent, on the diversity contained in the most mature forest class, which is also the most diverse community in the studied area. High and moderate beta diversity values between mature forests and both the secondary associations and the first stages of succession, respectively, indicated that there is a significant contribution to the diversity of the landscape by those vegetation classes.  相似文献

The responses ofPterostichus melanarius Illiger,Harpalus rufipes DeGeer, andNebria brevicollis Fabricius (Coleoptera: Carabidae) to olfactory cues of prey and habitat were studied in a four-arm continuous-airflow olfactometer. The process was semiautomated using time-lapse image analysis by microcomputer. The primary constituent of the aphid alarm pheromone, (E)--farnesene (EBF), was synthesized and tested for a kairomonal role in prey detection by carabids. In addition, individual beetles were exposed to odors from live aphids, live collembolans, and a crude extract of wheat. All three beetle species showed evidence of olfaction.P. melanarius responded to all the odors except collembolans,H. rufipes responded to EBF and wheat, andN. brevicollis to collembolans. The use of a defence allomone as a prey-finding kairomone by certain carabid species has implications for pest management. Manipulation of predator chemical ecology by the inclusion of behavior-modifying compounds in a crop spray mix with reduced amounts of insecticide may allow for efficient aphid control with less environmental contamination.  相似文献

Summary Adults of the leaf beetle Plagiodera versicolora Laich, avoided previously injured shoots of Salix alba Tristis in favor of nearby uninjured ones. The response was rapid and persisted for five days of study. During brief periods of observation, the vast majority of beetles engaged in behaviors other than locomotion such as feeding and resting. Furthermore, the proportions of beetles walking were similar on injured and uninjured shoots. It appears that under these experimental conditions previous injury did not greatly increase searching behavior of the beetles. Leaves on previously injured shoots received less subsequent herbivory than uninjured ones. Findings of these experiments are consistent with patterns of herbivory observed in the field and known reproductive responses of beetles to diets of injured leaves. These results provide new information toward understanding relatively low levels of herbivory on individual willow leaves associated with the feeding of P. versicolora.  相似文献

The GAC (Global Area Coverage) by the NOAA-AVHRR satellites represents an excellent data set for studying global and regional patterns of variations in surface conditions driven in part by climatic variation. In this pilot study we examined whether biodiversity hotspots, defined from peak concentrations of neoendemics as well as geographically relict forms, differ in ecoclimatic stability from surrounding areas under present-day climatic conditions. Coefficients of variation of the ratio between brightness surface temperature (Ts) and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) based upon 10 years' monthly composited scenes of tropical Africa revealed distinctive geographical patterns of interannual variability in surface conditions. Regions with a predominance of old species are characterized by spatial uniformity in the ecoclimatic variability, while regions where rapidly radiating groups dominate are spatially complex in this respect. However, the exact hotspots, with peak concentrations of endemic species, are characterized by a local reduction in ecoclimatic variability, or placement on the boundary to a stable region. This relationship was supported statistically by comparing ecoclimatic profiles across montane forests representing hotspots, and those of other montane forests. It is suggested that, because of interactions between prevailing atmospheric flows, topography and vegetation, the impact of extreme weather is moderated locally. The correlation between current stability and aggregates of neoendemics as well as old relics indicate that local moderation of climatic extremes persist through shifting climatic periods, permitting populations of unique species to survive in these places. The results are used to identify study sites for better ground truthing and for paleoclimatological studies which may be useful for more thorough studies of these relationships.  相似文献

A method is described by which the integument of Brachionus plicatilis, together with its intracellular lamina, is quickly dissolved before other parts or tissues of the animal are destroyed. After removing the integument several parts of the body can be separated and fractionated in a more or less intact state by centrifugation in a Percoll gradient. The measurement of enzyme activities has indicated that this procedure might provide a way of localizing enzymes within the rotifer body.  相似文献

The release of the defence secretion from the large wax glands (sensilla sagittiformia) of Dermacentor variabilis ticks modifies the behaviour of other ticks by inducing clustering. A coating of natural tick secretion onto test objects (delipidized ticks, glass beads or filter paper discs) also elicits a clustering response, but a topically applied squalene, its major component, does not have this effect. The clustering response appears to be species specific: D. variabilis cluster on conspecific ticks that secreted but they fail to cluster on Amblyomma americanum or Ixodes scapularis ticks unless coated with secretions from D. variabilis. Volatile components in the defence secretion are involved in recruiting conspecific ticks to those that secreted. When attacked by predatory fire ants, Solenopsis invicta, D. variabilis clustered on individuals that had released the defence secretion. This suggests that the secretion protects ticks from predation by functioning as an alarm pheromone. If confirmed, this is the first report of an alarm pheromone and its glandular source in ticks. The terminology applicable to the integumental glands of ticks is discussed.  相似文献

Lathyrism is a non-progressive motor neuron disease produced by consumption of the excitatory amino acid, 3-N-oxalyl-L-2,3-diaminopropanoic acid (-ODAP). To learn more about the mechanisms underlying Lathyrism three structural analogs of -ODAP were synthesized. Carboxymethyl-,-diaminopropanoic acid (CMDAP) evoked inward currents which were antagonized by APV (30 M), but not by CNQX (10 M). N-acetyl-,-diaminopropanoic acid (ADAP) evoked no detectable ionic currents but potentiated N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA)-activated currents. The potentiation of NMDA currents by ADAP was blocked by 7-chlorokynurenic acid. Carboxymethylcysteine (CMC) did not activate any detectable ionic currents. None of the three -ODAP analogs produced visible symptoms of toxicity in day old chicks when administered for 2–3 consecutive days. Ligand binding studies demonstrated that all the three compounds were effective to in displacing [3H]glutamate. The maximum inhibition was 92% for CMDAP, 61% for ADAP, 65% for CMC and 99% for -ODAP. These data indicate that analogs of -ODAP may interact with glutamate receptors without producing neurotoxicity.  相似文献

Summary Evidence for the origin and dating of crop weed communities composed of summer annuals is to be found in palaeobotanical and archaeological data. There is archaeological evidence that around the middle of the first millennium BC fields were taken into permanent cultivation, even on the poorer soils.Fertilization with lime and manure and Plaggenwirtschaft were evidently involved in this early agriculture. In this paper the idea is put forward that Plaggenwirtschaft resulted in a sudden increase in the number of weed species brought together in cornfields and that this practise led to the very first beginning of our modern weed communities.Translated into English by Drs. A cDNA clone (pBLT63) encoding a protein synthesis elongation factor 1 (EF-1) was isolated from a low-temperature winter barley shoot meristem library by differential screening. The nucleotide sequence of the coding region of the low-temperature-induced barley gene shows very high homology with two EF-1 plant genes from tomato and Arabidopsis. The barley genome contains an EF-1 gene family situated on the short arm of chromosome 2 and the long arm of chromosome 5. The nucleotide sequence data reported will appear in the EMBL, GenBank and DDBJ Nucleotide Sequence Databases under the accession number Z23130.  相似文献

Populations of the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis were monitored in three small ponds in a marsh on the Mediterranean coast. Samples were taken approximately every three weeks from July 1992 to November 1993. Salinity, temperature, conductivity, pH and oxygen concentration were measured in the field. Population density was determined from preserved quantitative samples. Individuals were classified as mictic females, amictic females, non-ovigerous females, and males, differentiating between two morphotypes (S and L). From these counts, a level of mixis was calculated. We also determined the proportion of mictic females in natural populations by culturing females isolated from fresh samples. From these data, mictic patterns over time and correlation between levels of mixis and environmental and population parameters were analyzed. From a previous study S and L morphotypes were known to correspond to genetically different clonal groups. Our data showed that reproduction was predominantly parthenogenetic in these clonal groups, but mictic females were found in most samples, the proportion of mictic females ranging from 0 to 29%. The clonal groups showed different patterns of mixis. L clonal group presented a continuous sexual reproductive pattern. In contrast, S clones showed a rather punctuated mictic pattern. A positive correlation between levels of sexual reproduction and population density was found for S and L groups. However, they differed in their density threshold for mictic reproduction. The adaptive meaning of these patterns and their implications in maintaining genetic diversity within and between populations are discussed.  相似文献

Formaldehyde accumulation ratios ([14CH2O]i/[14CH2O]o) as high as 12-fold were measured in anaerobic, CH3OH-energized, whole cell suspensions of the ribulose monophosphate (RuMP)-type methylotrophic strain T15. Uptake kinetics were extremely rapid, enabling the attainment of equilibrium in only 10–30 s. Transport appears to be energy-dependent and associated with the protonmotive force (pmf). Anaerobic incubation with 5 M carbonyl p-(trifluoromethoxy)-phenylhydrazone (FCCP) led to 70%–90% reduction of the accumulation ratio. Though not as pronounced, diminished uptake was also observed in the presence of 140 M nigericin, 161 M valinomycin and 90 mM KSCN, commensurate with their effects on pmf. Accumulation of CH2O as a function of external pH followed a trend more similar to that of pmf than either pH or . Preventing energization by incubation with 100 M N,N-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCCD) led to nearly 80% inhibition of CH2O transport. Incubation of -lactoglobulin with immobilized trypsin at 5–10°C results in a time-dependent release of several fragments of the core domain in yields approaching 15%. Digests were fractionated by ion-exchange chromatography with a Mono Q HR5/5 column and analyzed after disulfide reduction by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in sodium dodecylsulfate. Three fragments with approximate molecular weights of 13.8, 9.6, and 6.7 kD were identified. The fraction from ion-exchange chromatography yielding the 6.7 kD fraction after disulfide reduction was further characterized because it was most homogeneous and gave the highest yield. The C-terminal cleavage site of the 6.7 kD core fragment appeared to be Lys100 or Lys101 as determined by C-terminal amino acid analysis. The exact masses, after reduction with dithiothreitol, are 6195 and 6926 as determined by laser desorption mass spectrometry, corresponding to residues 48–101 and 41–100. Prior to reduction, -lactoglobulin C-terminal residues 149–162 are connected to these core domain fragments as shown by C-terminal analysis and mass spectrometry. Structural studies indicate that these 7.9 and 8.6 kD core domain fragments released by immobilized trypsin retain much of their native structure. CD spectra indicate the presence of antiparallel -sheet structure similar to the native protein but the -helix is lost. Spectra in the aromatic region indicate the existence of tertiary structure. Moreover, structural transitions in urea are completely reversible as measured by CD spectra, although the extrapolated G D H20 and the urea concentration at the transition midpoint are lower than for the native protein. The core domain fragments also display apH-dependent binding to immobilizedtrans-retinal as does intact protein. Spectroscopic study of interactions between esterified whey proteins and nucleic acids, at neutral pH, showed positive differential spectra over a range of wavelength between 210 and 340 nm. In contrast, native forms of whey proteins added to DNA did not produce any differential spectra. The positive difference in UV absorption was observed after addition of amounts of proteins as low as 138 molar ratio (MR) of protein/DNA, indicating high sensitivity of the applied method to detect interactions between basic proteins and DNA. UV-absorption differences increased with MR of added whey protein up to saturation. The saturation points were reached at relatively lower MR in the case of methylated forms of the esterified protein as compared to its ethylated form. Saturation of nucleic acid (2996 bp long) was achieved using 850 and 1100 MR of methylated -lactoglobulin and of methylated -lactalbumin, respectively. Saturation with ethylated forms of the proteins was reached at MR of 3160 and 2750. Lysozyme, a native basic protein, showed a behavior similar to what was observed in the case of methylated forms of the dairy proteins studied. However, in the case of lysozyme, saturation was achieved at relatively lower MR (700). Methylated -casein failed to give positive spectra at pH 7 in the presence of DNA. It interacted with DNA only when the pH of the medium was lowered to 6.5, below its pI. Generally, amounts of proteins needed to saturate nucleic acid were much higher than those needed to neutralize it only electrostatically, demonstrating the presence on DNA of protein-binding sites other than the negative charges on the sugar-phosphate DNA backbones. Addition of 0.1% SDS to the medium suppressed totally all spectral differences between 210–340 nm. The presence of 5 M urea in the medium reduced only the spectral differences between 210–340 nm, pointing to the role played by hydrophobic interactions. Peptic hydrolysates of esterified and native proteins or their cationic fractions (pH > 7) produced negative differential spectra when mixed with DNA. The negative differences in UV absorption spectra were the most important in the case of peptic hydrolysates of methylated derivatives of whey proteins.  相似文献

A desirable property of a diversity index is strict concavity. This implies that the pooled diversity of a given community sample is greater than or equal to but not less than the weighted mean of the diversity values of the constituting plots. For a strict concave diversity index, such as species richness S, Shannon's entropy H or Simpson's index 1-D, the pooled diversity of a given community sample can be partitioned into two non-negative, additive components: average within-plot diversity and between-plot diversity. As a result, species diversity can be summarized at various scales measuring all diversity components in the same units. Conversely, violation of strict concavity would imply the non-interpretable result of a negative diversity among community plots. In this paper, I apply this additive partition model generally adopted for traditional diversity measures to Aczél and Daróczy's generalized entropy of type . In this way, a parametric measure of -diversity is derived as the ratio between the pooled sample diversity and the average within-plot diversity that represents the parametric analogue of Whittaker's -diversity for data on species relative abundances.  相似文献

Summary The radial nerve cords of members of the class Ophiuroidea consist of two parts, the ectoneural and the hyponeural tissues, which are separated by an acellular basal lamina. The hyponeural tissue is composed entirely of motor fibres. The cell bodies of the hyponeural neurones are arranged in ganglia, one to each segment of the arm, and each containing approximately one hundred cell bodies. Synaptic contact between the two tissues occurs across the basal lamina. Ultrastructural evidence shows that the majority of these synapses operate in the ectoneural to hyponeural direction. Three pairs of nerve bundles, each containing approximately thirty five large motor fibres arise from each ganglion and innervate the intervertebral muscles. The large motor fibres divide into a number of pre-terminal axons in the region in which the motor fibre enters the muscle block. The terminal axons run at right-angles across the muscle fibres and neuromuscular junctions are found at the points of contact between the two; each terminal axon makes contact with a large number of muscle fibres. The hyponeural axons also pass through the juxtaligamental tissue before they reach the muscle blocks and there is some evidence of synaptic contact with the juxtaligamental cells. The juxtaligamental tissue is thought to be associated with changes in the structural properties of the collagenous ligaments of the arm during arm autotomy (Wilkie 1979). Degeneration studies confirmed the layout of the hyponeural motor axons.  相似文献
