The role of indirect effects such as apparent competition in structuring predator-prey assemblages has recently received empirical attention. That one prey species can be excluded by the impact of a shared-enemy contrasts with the known diversity of multispecies predator-prey interactions. Here, the role of predator foraging among patches of two different prey species is examined as a mechanism that can mediate coexistence in multispecies prey-predator assemblages. Specifically, models of host-parasitoid interactions are constructed to analyse how different types of aggregative behaviour (generated by host-dependent and host-independent responses) affect persistence of the assemblage. How the distribution of hosts and the response of the parasitoid to these distributions can influence coexistence is shown. A generic explanation for coexistence suggests that it is the variability rather than the precise functional relationship that is critical for coexistence under shared-enemy interactions.  相似文献

The vertebrate post-synaptic density (PSD) is a region of high molecular complexity in which dynamic protein interactions modulate receptor localization and synaptic function. Members of the membrane-associated guanylate kinase (MAGUK) family of proteins represent a major structural and functional component of the vertebrate PSD. In order to investigate the expression and significance of orthologous PSD components associated with the Aplysia sensory neuron-motor neuron synapse, we have cloned an Aplysia Dlg-MAGUK protein, which we identify as Aplysia synapse associated protein (ApSAP). As revealed by western blot, RT-PCR, and immunocytochemical analyses, ApSAP is predominantly expressed in the CNS and is located in both sensory neuron and motor neurons. The overall amino acid sequence of ApSAP is 55–61% identical to Drosophila Dlg and mammalian Dlg-MAGUK proteins, but is more highly conserved within L27, PDZ, SH3, and guanylate kinase domains. Because these conserved domains mediate salient interactions with receptors and other PSD components of the vertebrate synapse, we performed a series of GST pull-down assays using recombinant C-terminal tail proteins from various Aplysia receptors and channels containing C-terminal PDZ binding sequences. We have found that ApSAP selectively binds to an Aplysia Shaker-type channel AKv1.1, but not to (i) NMDA receptor subunit AcNR1-1, (ii) potassium channel AKv5.1, (iii) receptor tyrosine kinase ApTrkl, (iv) glutamate receptor ApGluR1/4, (v) glutamate receptor ApGluR2/3, or (vi) glutamate receptor ApGluR7. These findings provide preliminary information regarding the expression and interactions of Dlg-MAGUK proteins of the Aplysia CNS, and will inform questions aimed at a functional analysis of how interactions in a protein network such as the PSD may regulate synaptic strength.  相似文献

Models of metapopulations have often ignored local community dynamics and spatial heterogeneity among patches. However, persistence of a community as a whole depends both on the local interactions and the rates of dispersal between patches. We study a mathematical model of a metacommunity with two consumers exploiting a resource in a habitat of two different patches. They are the exploitative competitors or the competing predators indirectly competing through depletion of the shared resource. We show that they can potentially coexist, even if one species is sufficiently inferior to be driven extinct in both patches in isolation, when these patches are connected through diffusive dispersal. Thus, dispersal can mediate coexistence of competitors, even if both patches are local sinks for one species because of the interactions with the other species. The spatial asynchrony and the competition-colonization trade-off are usual mechanisms to facilitate regional coexistence. However, in our case, two consumers can coexist either in synchronous oscillation between patches or in equilibrium. The higher dispersal rate of the superior prompts rather than suppresses the inferior. Since differences in the carrying capacity between two patches generate flows from the more productive patch to the less productive, loss of the superior by emigration relaxes competition in the former, and depletion of the resource by subsidized consumers decouples the local community in the latter.  相似文献

Exciting new findings have emerged about the structure, function and biochemistry of tetraspanin proteins. Five distinct tetraspanin regions have now been delineated linking structural features to specific functions. Within the large extracellular loop of tetraspanins, there is a variable region that mediates specific interactions with other proteins, as well as a more highly conserved region that has been suggested to mediate homodimerization. Within the transmembrane region, the four tetraspanin transmembrane domains are probable sites of both intra- and inter-molecular interactions that are crucial during biosynthesis and assembly of the network of tetraspanin-linked membrane proteins known as the 'tetraspanin web'. In the intracellular juxtamembrane region, palmitoylation of cysteine residues also contributes to tetraspanin web assembly, and the C-terminal cytoplasmic tail region could provide specific functional links to cytoskeletal or signaling proteins.  相似文献

Mutualistic interactions repeatedly preserved across fragmented landscapes can scale‐up to form a spatial metanetwork describing the distribution of interactions across patches. We explored the structure of a bird seed‐dispersal (BSD) metanetwork in 16 Neotropical forest fragments to test whether a distinct subset of BSD‐interactions may mediate landscape functional connectivity. The metanetwork is interaction‐rich, modular and poorly connected, showing high beta‐diversity and turnover of species and interactions. Interactions involving large‐sized species were lost in fragments < 10 000 ha, indicating a strong filtering by habitat fragmentation on the functional diversity of BSD‐interactions. Persistent interactions were performed by small‐seeded, fast growing plant species and by generalist, small‐bodied bird species able to cross the fragmented landscape. This reduced subset of interactions forms the metanetwork components persisting to defaunation and fragmentation, and may generate long‐term deficits of carbon storage while delaying forest regeneration at the landscape level.  相似文献

G protein-coupled receptors are cell surface receptors that mediate the effects of extracellular signals in the endocrine/paracrine and sensory systems. Experimental evidence is accumulating, which suggest that these receptors form dimers or higher order oligomers. The functional relevance of G protein-coupled receptor dimerization or oligomerization has been raised in a number of different processes, including ontogeny, internalization, ligand-induced regulation, pharmacological diversity and signal transduction of these receptors. Agonist-independent homo- and hetero-oligomerization of the angiotensin AT1 receptor has been reported, and it has been suggested that hetero-oligomerization with beta-adrenergic receptors leads to cross-inhibition of these receptors. Much less is known about the functional interactions between AT1 receptor homo-oligomers. The aim of the present study was to analyze the functional interactions between these homo-oligomers by determining the functions of normal, AT1 receptor blocker (candesartan) resistant (S109Y) and G protein coupling deficient (DRY/AAY) AT1 receptors (co-)expressed in COS-7 cells. Although we have found no evidence that stimulation of a G protein coupling deficient receptor could cross-activate co-expressed normal receptors, candesartan binding to a signaling deficient receptor caused cross-inhibition of co-expressed candesartan resistant AT1 receptors. Since the studied mutations were in the third intracellular helix of the receptor, the observed effects cannot be explained with domain swapping. These data suggest that AT1 receptor blockers cause cross-inhibition of homo-oligomerized AT1 receptors, and support the concept that receptor dimers/oligomers serve as the functional unit of G protein-coupled receptors.  相似文献

Notch signalling is well-known to mediate lateral inhibition in inner ear sensory patches, so as to generate a balanced mixture of sensory hair cells and supporting cells. Recently, however, we have found that ectopic Notch activity at an early stage can induce the formation of ectopic sensory patches. This suggests that Notch activity may have two different functions in normal ear development, acting first to promote the formation of the prosensory patches, and then later to regulate hair-cell production within the patches. The Notch ligand Serrate1 (Jag1 in mouse and humans) is expressed in the patches from an early stage and may provide Notch activation during the prosensory phase. Here, we test whether Notch signalling is actually required for prosensory patch development. When we block Notch activation in the chick embryo using the gamma-secretase inhibitor DAPT, we see a complete loss of prosensory epithelial cells in the anterior otocyst, where they are diverted into a neuroblast fate via failure of Delta1-dependent lateral inhibition. The cells of the posterior prosensory patch remain epithelial, but expression of Sox2 and Bmp4 is drastically reduced. Expression of Serrate1 here is initially almost normal, but subsequently regresses. The patches of sensory hair cells that eventually develop are few and small. We suggest that, in normal development, factors other than Notch activity initiate Serrate1 expression. Serrate1, by activating Notch, then drives the expression of Sox2 and Bmp4, as well as expression of the Serrate1 gene itself. The positive feedback maintains Notch activation and thereby preserves and perhaps extends the prosensory state, leading eventually to the development of normal sensory patches.  相似文献

The ro mutants of Neurospora crassa are defective in nuclear migration and hyphal morphogenesis. Several of the ro loci have recently been shown to encode components of the dynein/dynactin motor complex. Here we report on the cloning and characterization of the ro-2 gene which codes for a novel 80 kDa protein that has two Cys-rich motifs which resemble zinc-binding LIM or RING domains thought to mediate protein–protein interactions. RO2 also contains several potential binding sites for Src homology 3 (SH3) domains. The ro-2 B20 allele has a frameshift mutation within one of the Cys-rich domains which eliminates the C-terminal half of the open reading frame (ORF). Disruption of the ro-2 locus by repeat-induced point (RIP) mutation gave rise to progeny which have a nuclear migration defect, but which are also blocked in conidiation. The ability to assemble cytoplasmic microtubules and actin is maintained in ro-2 mutants, although subapical actin patches are more prominent. Based on these observations, the RO2 gene product is proposed to play a role in mediating interactions between components of the dynein/dynactin motor complex or in linking this complex to the nucleus or cytoskeleton.  相似文献

Interactions among stomata within a single areole have recently been reported, and evidence suggests that hydraulic mechanisms may be responsible for these interactions. Such interactions may play a role in patchy stomatal behaviour by coordinating stomatal behaviour within areoles. However, models suggest that longer‐distance interactions may be required to produce the large‐scale discoordination that is characteristic of stomatal patchiness. This study was undertaken to characterize long‐distance interactions between ‘artificial patches’ of stomata under varying conditions of evaporative demand and soil water stress. Gas‐exchange was monitored in two adjacent regions (‘patches’) of a wheat leaf by two independent gas mixing and analysis systems. When photon flux density (PFD) was changed in only one of these patches, stomatal conductance responded in both patches in a manner consistent with hydraulic interactions propagated by changes in xylem water potential. These data are discussed in the context of mechanisms for patchy stomatal conductance and implications for the design and analysis of gas‐exchange experiments.  相似文献

Recent data support the idea that the functional organizations of sensory and motor maps in the mature brain are dynamically maintained. Experiments employing peripheral injuries or other manipulations indicate that these maps are capable of extensive reorganization. Insects rely on their innate immune system to successfully mediate complex interactions with their microbiota, as well as the microbes present in the environment. Previous work has shown that components of the canonical immune gene repertoire evolve rapidly and have evolutionary characteristics originating from interactions with fast‐evolving microorganisms. Although these interactions are likely to vary among populations, there is a poor understanding of the microevolutionary dynamics of immune genes, especially in non‐Dipteran insects. Here, we use the full set of canonical insect immune genes to investigate microevolutionary dynamics acting on these genes between and among populations by comparing three allopatric populations of the green‐veined white butterfly, Pieris napi (Linné; Lepidoptera, Pieridae). Immune genes showed increased genetic diversity compared to genes from the rest of the genome and various functional categories exhibited different types of signatures of selection, at different evolutionary scales, presenting a complex pattern of selection dynamics. Signatures of balancing selection were identified in 10 genes, and 17 genes appear to be under positive selection. Genes involved with the cellular arm of the immune response as well as the Toll pathway appear to be enriched among our outlier loci, regardless of functional category. This suggests that the targets of selection might focus upon an entire pathway, rather than functional subsets across pathways. Our microevolutionary results are similar to previously observed macroevolutionary patterns from diverse taxa, suggesting that either the immune system is robust to dramatic differences in life history and microbial communities, or that diverse microbes exert similar selection pressures.  相似文献

The respiratory pathways of glycolysis, the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle and the mitochondrial electron transport chain are ubiquitous throughout nature. They are essential for both energy provision in heterotrophic cells and a wide range of other physiological functions. Although the series of enzymes and proteins that participate in these pathways have long been known, their regulation and control are much less well understood. Further complexity arises due to the extensive interaction among these pathways in particular, and also between cytosolic and mitochondrial metabolism in general. These interactions include those between mitochondrial function in the photosynthetic and photorespiratory processes, amino-acid biosynthesis and the regulation of cellular redox. Recently, a wide range of molecular and biochemical strategies have been adopted to elucidate the functional significance of these interactions.  相似文献

Sperm competition arises as a result of complex interactions among male and female factors. While the roles of some male factors are known, little is known of the molecules or mechanisms that underlie the female contribution to sperm competition. The genetic tools available for Drosophila allow us to identify, in an unbiased manner, candidate female genes that are critical for mediating sperm competition outcomes. We first screened for differences in female sperm storage and use patterns by characterizing the natural variation in sperm competition in a set of 39 lines from the sequenced Drosophila Genetic Reference Panel (DGRP) of wild-derived inbred lines. We found extensive female variation in sperm competition outcomes. To generate a list of candidate female genes for functional studies, we performed a genome-wide association mapping, utilizing the common single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) segregating in the DGRP lines. Surprisingly, SNPs within ion channel genes and other genes with roles in the nervous system were among the top associated SNPs. Knockdown studies of three candidate genes (para, Rab2, and Rim) in sensory neurons innervating the female reproductive tract indicate that some of these candidate female genes may affect sperm competition by modulating the neural input of these sensory neurons to the female reproductive tract. More extensive functional studies are needed to elucidate the exact role of all these candidate female genes in sperm competition. Nevertheless, the female nervous system appears to have a previously unappreciated role in sperm competition. Our results indicate that the study of female control of sperm competition should not be limited to female reproductive tract-specific genes, but should focus also on diverse biological pathways.  相似文献

Aims Habitat fragmentation impacts the spatial extent and isolation of local populations and communities. Although the biological consequences of these impacts have been well studied at the site level, effects directly related to changes in the spatial configuration of populations in the landscape remain less clear. The objective of this study is to examine how changes in the spatial-scale configuration of populations are associated with variability in morph rations in the floral polymorphic Mediterranean geophyte Narcissus assoanus .Methods We performed a nested analysis of morph ratio variation at three spatial scales: a 50×50 km regional scale in SE France, in fourteen 1×1 km landscapes located in the same region, and within 12 spatially extensive population patches. We also quantified variation in the behaviour of pollinators in population patches of contrasting spatial configuration.Important findings At a regional scale, morph ratios show a geographic pattern of increasing isoplethy (1:1 morph ratio) away from centres of human population development and in upland pastures. At the landscape scale, isoplethy of local population patches is more correlated with decreased isolation among patches than with patch size. Finally, within local isoplethic populations, small patches can show significantly biased morph ratios. In small isolated patches, pollinators perform shorter flight distances among consecutive flower visits than in spatially extensive patches. This study of variation in a genetic polymorphism at multiple spatial scales provides new insights into the scale-dependent effects of habitat fragmentation and the potential occurrence of metapopulation dynamics in natural plant populations.  相似文献

基于生境斑块,结合最小费用距离并运用图论法对滇金丝猴分布区进行栖息地连接度分析,研究利用猴群的现实分布结合Logistic回归模型确定了景观功能连接的最佳距离阈值,对于功能畅通的组分,以景观指数BC定量识别出作为"踏脚石"的优先保护区域;对于功能不连接的组分,绘制出最小费用路径,确定了该路径中优先恢复区域。结果表明:最佳的最小费用距离阈值为1400,该阈值下猴群主要存在于5个组分中,所有组分中猴群间的连接度优劣排序为组分3组分1组分5组分4,龙马山猴群(G15)没有"踏脚石"斑块使其与同一组分内的其他猴群相连接,应考虑优先恢复该区域的植被,研究成果对于该物种的保护和其他濒危物种的类似研究具有较强的参考价值和借鉴意义。  相似文献

Mammalian neuronal DEG/ENaC channels known as ASICs (acid-sensing ion channels) mediate sensory perception and memory formation. ASICS are closed at rest and are gated by protons. Members of the DEG/ENaC family expressed in epithelial tissues are called ENaCs and mediate Na(+) transport across epithelia. ENaCs exhibit constitutive activity and strict Na(+) selectivity. We report here the analysis of the first DEG/ENaC in Caenorhabditis elegans with functional features of ENaCs that is involved in sensory perception. ACD-1 (acid-sensitive channel, degenerin-like) is constitutively open and impermeable to Ca(2+), yet it is required with neuronal DEG/ENaC channel DEG-1 for acid avoidance and chemotaxis to the amino acid lysine. Surprisingly, we document that ACD-1 is required in glia rather than neurons to orchestrate sensory perception. We also report that ACD-1 is inhibited by extracellular and intracellular acidification and, based on the analysis of an acid-hypersensitive ACD-1 mutant, we propose a mechanism of action of ACD-1 in sensory responses based on its sensitivity to protons. Our findings suggest that channels with ACD-1 features may be expressed in mammalian glia and have important functions in controlling neuronal function.  相似文献

The ability to integrate information across multiple sensory systems offers several behavioral advantages, from quicker reaction times and more accurate responses to better detection and more robust learning. At the neural level, multisensory integration requires large-scale interactions between different brain regions--the convergence of information from separate sensory modalities, represented by distinct neuronal populations. The interactions between these neuronal populations must be fast and flexible, so that behaviorally relevant signals belonging to the same object or event can be immediately integrated and integration of unrelated signals can be prevented. Looming signals are a particular class of signals that are behaviorally relevant for animals and that occur in both the auditory and visual domain. These signals indicate the rapid approach of objects and provide highly salient warning cues about impending impact. We show here that multisensory integration of auditory and visual looming signals may be mediated by functional interactions between auditory cortex and the superior temporal sulcus, two areas involved in integrating behaviorally relevant auditory-visual signals. Audiovisual looming signals elicited increased gamma-band coherence between these areas, relative to unimodal or receding-motion signals. This suggests that the neocortex uses fast, flexible intercortical interactions to mediate multisensory integration.  相似文献
