Inter- and intra-specific differences in survivorship of Nephelopsis obscura and Erpobdella punctata under anoxic conditions were examined. Two types of experiments were used. In the closed (static) experiments the leeches faced three stresses – anoxia, build-up of metabolites and starvation, while in the flow-through experiments only anoxia was experienced. The results obtained from the two types of experiments indicate that survival times are longer in the flow-through experiments. Inter- and intra-specific differences in survivorship under anoxic conditions correlate well with the patterns of reproduction observed for field populations of N. obscura and E. punctata .  相似文献

Flightless, diurnal tenebrionid beetles are commonly found in deserts. They possess a curious morphological adaptation, the subelytral cavity (an air space beneath the fused elytra) the function of which is not completely understood. In the tenebrionid beetle Eleodes obscura, we measured abdominal movements within the subelytral cavity, and the activity of the pygidial cleft (which seals or unseals the subelytral cavity), simultaneously with total CO2 release rate and water loss rate. First, we found that E. obscura has the lowest cuticular permeability measured in flow-through respirometry in an insect (0.90 microg H2O cm(-2) Torr(-1) h(-1)). Second, it does not exhibit a discontinuous gas exchange cycle. Third, we describe the temporal coupling between gas exchange, water loss, subelytral space volume, and the capacity of the subelytral space to exchange gases with its surroundings as indicated by pygidial cleft state. Fourth, we suggest possible mechanisms that may reduce respiratory water loss rates in E. obscura. Finally, we suggest that E. obscura cannot exchange respiratory gases discontinuously because of a morphological constraint (small tracheal or spiracular conductance). This "conductance constraint hypothesis" may help to explain the otherwise puzzling phylogenetic patterns of continuous vs. discontinuous gas exchange observed in tracheate arthropods.  相似文献

This study was conducted to evaluate the quality of water in selected dams in Albaha region, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Water samples from eight dams were subjected to physical, chemical, and bacteriological assessment using standardized procedures of conductivity, total dissolved solids, ions, acidity & alkalinity, and EC blue 100® coliform detection. About three fourth (75%) of dams’ water samples exceeded the permissible levels of pH, total dissolved solids, turbidity, Mn and NO3 set by Saudi standards. Average levels of total dissolved solids, Fe, Mn, SO4, NO3, and NO2 were 3065.00, 0.10, 0.89, 68.25, 17.91 and 0.016 mg/L, respectively. However, the average pH of water samples was 7.95 ± 0.66 which still within the accepted range set by national and global standards. Moreover, total dissolved solids also exceeded regular standards of Food and Agriculture Organization for irrigation water quality. Coliform bacteria were detected in 37.5% of dams without any significant spatial differences between dams and sites as groups. Correlations were found between pH & NO3, SO4 & NO3, coliform bacteria & turbidity, coliform bacteria & NO2 levels. Increased concentrations of assessed parameters in dams may be attributed to agricultural activities as well as animal and human wastes deposited into dams via rainfalls and flash floods. Proper treatment of dams needs to be taken into account before consumption and irrigation.  相似文献

The topography, morphology, hydrography, temperature conditions and water chemistry of an acid thermal lake, Lake Rotowhero. North Island, New Zealand, were studied and related to lake biology. Results are given for analyses of O2, pH, conductivity, Ca, Mg, Na, K, SO4, Cl, Si, total-P, reactive-P, NH4-N, NO3 N, NO2-N As, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, total dissolved solids, chlorophyll and total pigment. Industrial effluents from jute, paper, pulp mills and sewage from households are regularly discharged into the Hooghly River. It generates a potential risk for both humans and animals of the area concerned. In the present study, water quality of the Hooghly River passing by the site of a growing township (Naihati, North 24 Parganas, West Bengal, India) was assessed throughout the year 2010 on the basis of the data collected on the physicochemical and microbiological parameters. The water samples collected on each month revealed the presence of higher amount of coliform bacteria, Streptococcus sp. and Escherichia coli, than the standard limit. Different physicochemical parameters like chemical oxygen demand, biological oxygen demand, dissolved oxygen (DO), total suspended solids, total dissolved solids (TDS), total hardness, alkalinity, chlorinity, nitrate and nitrite of the water at the sampling sites were found to be considerably higher than the levels standardized by WHO (2006). It was found that the relative abundance of Streptococcus and E. coli was influenced by two independent variables (water quality parameters), namely, DO and TDS. The abundance of coliform bacteria in the water sample warrants the adoption of proper measures to reduce the pollution level at the point source on way of scientific disposal of industrial effluents.  相似文献

The Water Quality Index is one of the most effective tools to communicate information on the quality of water to the people. An attempt was made to assess the annual and seasonal status of Surajkund and Rani Pond, Aurangabad, Bihar, India using the overall Index of Pollution and Water Quality Index from November 2017 to October 2019. The values of eleven parameters namely water temperature, pH, electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, total alkalinity, hardness, total dissolved solids, chloride, nitrate and fluoride were calculated following standard methodology. A statistically significant difference was found among these parameters. The values were compared with the standard to determine the overall Index of Pollution and Water Quality Index. Results indicated that electrical conductivity, total alkalinity and total dissolved solid were higher than prescribed limits. The values 1.5–3.50 of the overall Index of Pollution estimated that the average status of water of Surajkund was acceptable (C2) but Rani Pond and Surajkund during the summer season were slightly polluted (C3). The values 74.18–233.89 of the Water Quality Index inferred that the average status of water of Surajkund and Rani Pond was slightly polluted (C3). However, on a seasonal basis, the water quality of Surajkund was acceptable (C2) but Rani Pond was slightly polluted (C3) to polluted (C4). The results revealed anthropogenic activity and entry of untreated sewage in these water bodies. The water quality felt the necessity to adopt proper management policy and conservation efforts to these water bodies.  相似文献

Water quality and mollusc communities have been declining in Lake Winnipeg., the tenth largest freshwater lake in the world. Ninety sites were surveyed in the southern half of the lake. Nitrate and total dissolved solids were found to be significantly higher on the west side, while cadmium, copper and lead were higher on the east side. Agriculture, urban effluent, and recreational development were major factors directly affecting nearshore water quality. Human impacts were sporadically aggravated by Red River floodwaters entering the lake. A total of 26 gastropod were currently found in the lake, but 16 of them were found at 5 or fewer sites. Only 6 unionid species were found, compared to at least 11 historical species records. Species richness of both gastropods and unionids was positively correlated with total dissolved solids, and inversely with lead. Gastropod and unionid species richness were also mutually positively correlated. Catchment basin and shoreline management policies affecting Lake Winnipeg need to be reexamined to reduce further habitat decline.  相似文献

The present work was aimed at analysing the role of inoculated microalgae in nutrient dynamics, bioremediation and biomass production of sewage water. Preliminary microscopic analyses of sewage water revealed the presence of different algal groups, with predominance of Cyanophyta. Among the inoculated strains, Calothrix showed highest dry cell weight (916.67 mg L?1), chlorophyll and carotenoid content in tap water + sewage water (1:1) treatment. Significant removal of NO3-N ranging from 57–78% and PO4-P (44–91%) was recorded in microalgae inoculated tap water + sewage water. The total dissolved solids and electrical conductivity of tap water + sewage water after incubation with Calothrix sp. decreased by 28.5 and 28.0%, accompanied by an increase in dissolved oxygen from 4.4 to 6.4 mg L?1 on the 20th day. Our investigation revealed the robustness of Calothrix sp. in sequestering nutrients (N and P), improving water quality and proliferating in sewage water.  相似文献

The Songkhram River, the third largest tributary of the Mekong, represents an important area of wetland biodiversity associated with the Mekong River system in tropical Southeast Asia. This area is endangered by human population growth and the associated spread of commerce and industry. Nevertheless, no adequate hydrochemical data are available to act as a baseline for further limnological studies. We carried out measurements of air and water temperatures, pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, salinity, total dissolved solids and transparency at six sites along the length of the river from July 2005 to May 2006. The ambient temperature ranged from 24 to 40 °C with an overall average of 29.4 °C, while the average water temperature is 28.2 °C and never exceeds 35.0 °C. The pH value is within the range of 5.3–7.4 (mean 6.11). There is a trend towards increasing pH in the dry season when the water level is low. Conductivity varies spatially and temporally among study sites. There is a trend towards increasing conductivity when the water level decreases, and conversely with increasing water level. Temporal and spatial variations in dissolved oxygen show a trend that suggests an increase as the water level decreases. The total dissolved solids show no variation either temporally or spatially in the wet season but vary considerably in the dry season. These data provide a sound basis for comprehensive future studies on the ecology of the Songkhram River.  相似文献

Gilgel Gibe hydroelectric power dam was located in the submerging part of the Addis Ababa, Jimma highway in Ethiopia which is about 55 km far from Jimma was constructed in 2004. A cross-sectional study was conducted during 2005 to assess the siltation and nutrient enrichment level of the dam. It was found from the study that siltation and nutrient enrichment were the major problems in this reservoir. The sheet erosion of catchment area was found to be 4.47x10(7) ton/year and hence 2210 ton/km(2). The contribution of the sediment load deposition of the Gilgel Gibe River to the dam was 277,437 ton/year and the total sediment load was 4.50x10(7)ton/year and this amount could cover 3.75x10(7) m(3)/year of the dam. From the analysis of water samples of Gilgel Gibe dam, the concentrations of ammonia, chlorophyll a, total dissolved solids (TDS), dissolved oxygen (DO), biological oxygen demand (BOD), pH and temperature were found within the permissible limits as prescribed by WHO standards, but other parameters like phosphate, nitrate, sulphate, total solids (TS), total suspended solids (TSS) and visibility were much higher than the permissible limits. Due to the high concentration of suspended and sediment load, the secchi disc visibility of Gilgel Gibe dam was 0.72 m which indicated that it was well within the range of eutrophic lakes.  相似文献

通过测定中国境内荒漠植物红砂(Reaumuria soongorica)主要分布区内21个自然种群407株叶片的叶绿素和脯氨酸含量,以及不同种群内土壤含水量、可溶性盐分含量、有机质、全氮、全磷含量等土壤理化性状指标,分析了不同自然种群红砂叶绿素和脯氨酸含量的变异特征以及影响其变化的主要环境因子.研究结果表明:红砂种群间叶绿素含量差异显著.土壤因子对叶绿素合成的影响较气象因子大,而土壤含水量和土壤全磷含量是导致不同红砂种群叶绿素含量出现明显差异的主要原因.红砂脯氨酸含量平均值显著高于盐爪爪、骆驼刺、芨芨草等其它荒漠物种,并且与叶片含水量和土壤含水量呈显著负相关,与土壤可溶性盐分含量呈显著正相关.红砂体内脯氨酸的累积是对干旱盐渍环境的适应性反应,与抗旱性和抗盐性之间存在着一定的关系.  相似文献

Seasonally flooded, freshwater cypress-tupelo wetlands, dominated by baldcypress (Taxodium distictum), water tupelo (Nyssa aquatica), and swamp tupelo (Nyssa sylvatica var. biflora) are commonly found in coastal regions of the southeastern United States. These wetlands are threatened due to climate change, sea level rise, and coastal urban development. Understanding the natural biogeochemical cycles of nutrients in these forested wetlands as ecosystems services such as carbon sequestration and nitrogen processing can provide important benchmarks to guide conservation plans and restoration goals. In this study, surface water and soil pore water samples were collected weekly from a cypress-tupelo wetland near Winyah Bay, South Carolina and analyzed for dissolved organic carbon (DOC), dissolved organic nitrogen (DON), inorganic nitrogen, and phosphate during its flooding period between October 2010 and May 2011. DOC was further characterized by specific ultra-violet absorbance at 254 nm, spectral slope ratio (SR) (ratio of two spectral slopes between 275–295 nm and 350–400 nm), E2/E3 ratio (ratio between A254 and A365), and fluorescence excitation-emission matrix. In addition, litterfall was collected on a monthly basis for a year while the biomass of the detritus layer (i.e., decomposed duff lying on the wetland floor) was determined before and after the flooding period. Results of the field study showed that concentrations of DOC, DON, NH4 +–N, and (NO2 ? + NO3 ?)–N in the surface water were generally higher during the fall, or peak litterfall season (October to December), than in the spring season (March to May). Highest concentrations of 54.8, 1.48, 0.270, and 0.0205 mg L?1, for DOC, DON, NH4 +–N, and (NO2 ? + NO3 ?)–N respectively, in surface waters were recorded during October. Lower SUVA, but higher SR and E2/E3 ratios of DOC, were observed at the end of the flooding season comparing to the initial flooding, suggesting the wetland system converts high aromatic and large DOC molecules into smaller and hydrophilic fractions possibly through photochemical oxidation. A similar trend was observed in soil pore water, but the pore water generally had greater and relatively stable concentrations of dissolved nutrients than surface water. No obvious temporal trend in phosphate concentration and total nitrogen to total phosphorus ratio (N:P) were found. Results of the laboratory extraction and mass balance calculation suggested fresh litter was a major source of DOC whereas decomposed duff was the source of dissolved nitrogen in surface water. In summary, the biogeochemistry of this isolated cypress-tupelo wetland is not only driven by the vegetation within the wetland system but also by hydrology and weather conditions such as groundwater table position, precipitation, and temperature.  相似文献

This study was conducted in a rural region where there are conventional and organic farms, the agricultural production includes more than 20 million people, and the effect on environmental quality is still poorly known in terms of indicators. Our objectives were: (1) compare soils attributes to reference areas, (2) verifying if cultivated areas under different farm systems presented differences in the soils attributes, (3) evaluate the attributes of quality water of watersheds and comparing the results with limiting values established by environmental legislation, and (4) analyze the values considering three criterion: watersheds, climatic season, and region of the landscapes. The study was conducted in two rural watersheds that have similar biophysical features and located in the Ibiúna municipality, São Paulo State, Brazil. However, one watershed encompasses farms where landowners largely use conventional agricultural systems. In the other watershed approximately 25% of the farms there are using an organic farm system. In the two watersheds soil samples were collected in sites covered with natural forest and in sites with agriculture (one watershed being organic and other being conventional). The attributes analyzed were soil bulk density (BD), concentrations of Carbon (C) and Nitrogen (N), C:N ratio, C Management Index, and the abundance of 13C and 15N in the soil organic matter. Water attributes were analyzed onsite or in laboratory after analysis of samples. Analyses included: air and water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, salinity, total of dissolved solids, total solids, electric conductivity, turbidity, total chloride, nitrate, total phosphorus and potassium. Regarding the soil attributes our database revealed that (1) the soils from cultivated sites of both watersheds presented significant differences from their respective forested areas, (2) Soil attributes are of equal quality in both farm systems. Concerning water attributes: (1) almost all attributes presented values better than the limiting values stipulated by Brazilian legislation; (2) the watersheds did not present significant differences of most of the attributes; (3) in the criteria climatic season data showed some significant differences. The data showed that the soils from the areas used for agricultural ends present belief that significantly worse soil quality in comparison to soils from sites still covered with natural forest. Neither the land cover nor farming system are altering the superficial water quality of the studied watershed and this appears to be related to the extensive percentage of natural remaining vegetation that still exists in both watersheds. The seasonality is an important force that drives the quality characteristics of the water. We highlight that the principles of organic agriculture should be practiced more efficiently and influences such as deforestation should be rigorously avoided.  相似文献

Use of diatoms in monitoring water quality is well acknowledged in developed countries, but only recently has the assessment started gaining importance in developing countries. Diatoms can be obtained from natural and artificial substrates. Appreciating the differences and similarities of diatom assemblages on both substrates may contribute to a better understanding and standardization particularly during monitoring of water quality. During this study we assessed diatom assemblages, biodiversity and trophic indices in relation to water quality along the Nairobi River. Fifteen sites were sampled in September 2000 during the dry season. Diatoms were collected from natural substrates (stones, pebbles) and artificial substrates (100% acrylic wool). On artificial and natural substrates, a total of 190 and 151 taxa were found, respectively, the majority of these taxa (80%) have cosmopolitan distribution and are also widespread throughout tropical African. Species composition changed downstream, five taxa dominated upper and mid stream sites whereas lower stream sites were dominated by one or two taxa. Species richness, diversity, dominance and evenness were positively correlated with NO3, O2 and altitude but decreased markedly downstream with a simultaneous increase in total dissolved solids, alkalinity, chemical oxygen demand and PO4. Ordination and classification (CANOCO and TWINSPAN) showed that diatom assemblages in the Nairobi River responded strongly to water quality changes with respect to concentrations of NO3, NO2, total dissolved solids and temperature. Taxa common at less impacted upstream sites included Gomphonema gracilis, Anomoeoneis brachysira and Fragilaria biceps; while common taxa at midstream sites with agricultural catchments were Gomphonema parvulum, Navicula cryptocephala, N. schroeteri, N. bryophila, N. halophila, Nitzschia linearis var. linearis and Cymbella silesica. Achnanthes minutissima var. saprophila, Gomphonema angustum, Navicula subminuscula, N. arvensis, Nitzschia palea and N. umbonata were most common at urban sites, which were polluted by residential and industrial effluents. Trophic diatom indices suggested that water quality was poor at most sites in the Nairobi River. Most sites along the river had low Generic Diatom Index values, GDI (<12) and high Trophic Diatom Index values, TDI 73–78 (median = 76) and 75–84 (median = 77) for artificial and natural substrates, respectively. This study showed that diatoms' response on natural and artificial substrates were similar and reflected environmental conditions correctly.  相似文献

The euryhaline status of steelhead trout, Salmo gairdneri , smolts was challenged in sea water for 2 weeks after which half of the total fish population was returned to fresh water. Acclimation continued and created two test populations in 29%osea water and fresh water. Subsequently these fish were exposed in fresh water or sea water to approximately equal hyperbaric dissolved total gas pressures (ΔP) of 190 mm Hg or about 125% of barometric pressure. Sea water was easier to supersaturate with air and required only about 10% of the entrained air which was required in fresh water at the same temperature and pressure. Mean time to first mortality was sooner in sea water. Mean times to mortality (10–50%) were not significantly different between fresh water and sea water, but there was a noticeable trend for longer survival in fresh water.  相似文献

Chemical characteristics of soils and soil pore waters, plant species composition and horizontal stand structure were investigated for three reed stands in the Třeboň Basin (Czech Republic): Branná sand pit and two littoral stands of Rožmberk fishpond (Rožmberk East and Rožmberk West). Phragmites stands were expanding, stable and retreating at the three sites, respectively. The elemental soil composition (especially of C, N, P, and K) indicated the lowest trophic conditions at Branná, intermediate at Rožmberk East and the highest at Rožmberk West. This corresponded well also with concentrations of ammonium nitrogen, dissolved reactive phosphate and total phosphorus in the soil pore water. In contrast, Branná had by far the highest level of total nitrogen, determined by nitrate nitrogen (20 mg l−1), and the highest level of total dissolved solids (concentrations of NO3, SO42−, Ca2+ and Mg2+) of all three sites. No conspicuous differences were found among the three stands in biomass and its allocation. The vegetation composition corresponded more closely to elemental soil composition than to total nitrogen or total dissolved solids in the pore water. It is concluded that Branná provides an example of a site subjected to an initiating but dramatic and fast eutrophication while conditions at the two Rožmberk sites indicate a slower but longer lasting eutrophication. Owing to continuous heavy organic loading, Rožmberk West represents a hypertrophic site characterised by the highest levels of organic matter and associated characteristics (soil C, N, P, K, dissolved P), but also by the most severe lack of oxygen of the three sites.  相似文献

Cell size is one of the ecologically most important traits of phytoplankton. The cell size variation is frequently related to temperature and nutrient limitation. In order to disentangle the role of both factors, an experiment was conducted to determine the possible interactions of these factors. Baltic Sea water containing the natural plankton community was used. We performed a factorial combined experiment of temperature, type of nutrient limitation (N vs. P), and strength of nutrient limitation. The type of nutrient limitation was manipulated by altering the N:P ratio of the medium (balanced, N and P limitation) and strength by the dilution rate (0% and 50%) of the semicontinuous cultures. The negative effect of temperature on cell size was strongest under N limitation, intermediate under P limitation, and weakest when N and P were supplied at balanced ratios. However, temperature also influenced the intensity of nutrient imitation, because at higher temperature there was a tendency for dissolved nutrient concentrations to be lower, while the C:N or C:P ratio being higher…higher at identical dilution rates and medium composition. Analyzing the response of cell size to C:N ratios (as index of N limitation) and C:P ratios (as index of P limitation) indicated a clear dominance of the nutrient effect over the direct temperature effect, although the temperature effect was also significant.  相似文献

The Pawcatuck River watershed (764 km2) is a mainly forested drainage basin with a low population density (80 people km−2) that discharges to a shallow estuary, Little Narragansett Bay (RI and CT, USA). In order to quantify the nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) flux to the estuary, we measured all forms of nitrogen and phosphorus, as well as suspended solids at the mouth of the river above tidal influence, on more than 80 occasions over an annual cycle. The annual export of total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and total suspended solids amounted to 16.0×106 mol y−1, 0.97×106 mol y−1, and 1.4×106 kg y−1, respectively. Nitrogen export was equally divided between dissolved inorganic (83% NO3) and organic forms, with particulate nitrogen comprising 17% of the total flux. Phosphorus export was dominated by particulate forms (67%), with dissolved inorganic phosphate contributing 30% and dissolved organic phosphorus contributing 8% of the annual flux. Preliminary nutrient budgets for the Pawcatuck watershed suggest that only about 10% of the nitrogen and phosphorus inputs are exported from the system. Strong regressions between water discharge and TN enabled us to extrapolate the data collected during the relatively dry study period to a long term average discharge year. Under normal river discharge conditions, the N flux would be approximately 26.0×106 mol y−1 or about 20% of the nitrogen inputs to the watershed. This value is very close to the N flux predicted by a regression developed by others from a wide range of larger watersheds. The relatively large size of the Pawcatuck watershed relative to the estuary (9.6 km2), makes Little Narragansett Bay one of the most intensively nitrogen loaded estuaries on the Atlantic coast in spite of the dominant forest cover of the watershed.  相似文献

Low dissolved oxygen (DO) levels often occur during summer in tidal creeks along the southeastern coast of the USA. We analyzed rates of oxygen loss as water-column biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) and sediment oxygen flux (SOF) at selected tidal creek sites monthly over a 1-year period. Ancillary physical, chemical and biological data were collected to identify factors related to oxygen loss. BOD5 rates ranged from 0.0 mg l?1 to 7.6 mg l?1 and were correlated positively with organic suspended solids, total suspended solids, chlorophyll a concentrations, temperature, and dissolved oxygen, and negatively with pH and nitrate + nitrite. SOF rates ranged from 0.0 to 9.3 g O2 m?2 d?1, and were positively correlated with temperature, chlorophyll a, and total suspended solids, but negatively with dissolved oxygen. Both forms of oxygen uptake were seasonally dependent, with BOD5 elevated in spring and summer and SOF elevated in summer and fall. Average oxygen loss to sediments was greater and more variable than oxygen loss in the water column. Oxygen deficits at three of five locations were significantly related to BOD5 and SOF, but not at two sites where ground water discharges were observed. Correlation and principal component analyses suggested that BOD5 and SOF responded to somewhat different suites of environmental variables. BOD5 was driven by a set of parameters linked to warm season storm water inputs that stimulated organic seston loads, especially chlorophyll a, while SOF behaved less strongly so. Runoff processes that increase loads of organic material and nutrients and ground water discharges low in dissolved oxygen contribute to occurrences of low dissolved oxygen in tidal creeks.  相似文献
