We are very frequently told that peasants are exploited without being told what exactly this means, whether peasant exploitation is confined to peasants, or whether the word exploitation is meant to convey different meanings for different societies. This paper discusses two meanings of exploitation, neither of which relates uniquely to peasantry, and poses specific questions about "exploitation" and "surplus," the answers to which would tell us a good deal about what is meant by the exploitation of peasantry.  相似文献

ABSTRACT   Several theories of ethnicity emphasize the analysis of intergroup relations. They neglect, however, the conflation of ideas and values structuring these relations—notably the cross-cultural aggregates of shared cultural meanings that underlie forms of cooperation and competition between interacting groups. In this article, I explore this kind of process through a multisite ethnography of the Xiu gugu ("refining of orphaned bones"), a ritual that the Chaozhou people of northeast Guangdong province, an ethnic subgroup of the Han, perform periodically. The celebration of this rite in Chaozhou is compared to versions resulting of the ritual in Malay Muslim and Thai Buddhist contexts. In the latter case, close conceptions of malevolent death underlie a fascinating interethnic cooperation, with most of the unfortunate dead whose bones are "refined" during the Chaozhou ritual being Thai.  相似文献

Triosephosphate isomerase has an important loop near the active site which can exist in a "closed" and in an "open" conformation. Here we describe the structural properties of this "flexible" loop observed in two different structures of trypanosomal triosephosphate isomerase. Trypanosomal triosephosphate isomerase, crystallized in the presence of 2.4 M ammonium sulfate, packs as an asymmetric dimer of 54,000 Da in the crystallographic asymmetric unit. Due to different crystal contacts, peptide 167-180 (the flexible loop of subunit-1) is an open conformation, whereas in subunit-2, this peptide (residues 467-480) is in a closed conformation. In the closed conformation, a hydrogen bond exists between the tip of the loop and a well-defined sulfate ion which is bound to the active site of subunit-2. Such an active site sulfate is not present in subunit-1 due to crystal contacts. When the native (2.4 M ammonium sulfate) crystals are transferred to a sulfate-free mother liquor, the flexible loop of subunit-2 adopts the open conformation. From a closed starting model, this open conformation was discovered through molecular dynamics refinement without manual intervention, despite involving C alpha shifts of up to 7 A. The tip of the loop, residues 472, 473, 474, and 475, moves as a rigid body. Our analysis shows that in this crystal form the flexible loop of subunit-2 faces a solvent channel. Therefore the open and the closed conformations of this flexible loop are virtually unaffected by crystal contacts. The actual observed conformation depends only on the absence or presence of a suitable ligand in the active site.  相似文献

The Asian rice gall midge (RGM) Orseolia oryzae (Wood Mason) (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) is a major pest of rice, leading to yield losses in Thailand and many Asian countries. Despite an increasing number of reported midge outbreaks and the presence of many susceptible rice varieties, only a few studies have focused on the genetic variation of the midges. Therefore, we analyzed the phylogeography among Thai RGM populations covering north, northeast and central Thailand. Two mitochondrial DNA genes, cytochrome C oxidase I (COI) and 12S, and a non-coding repeat region (RR) situated just before COI were amplified. Overall, the haplotype diversity for COI and 12S genes of the Thai population was high, but the nucleotide diversity was quite low. Altogether, the phylogenetic tree and pairwise F st values indicated that Thai RGM populations recently expanded and were homogeneously distributed throughout the country, except for some populations in the north, which most likely became recently isolated from the main population. Two non-coding repeat motifs, that were recently observed in the mitogenome of RGM in India, were absent in Thai populations and replaced by an 89 bp non-coding sequence. Tandem nucleotide repeats of the sequence TA were also observed. The repeat copy number varied from 2 to 11 and was not correlated with geographical repartition of the midge. Finally, COI barcoding divergence between Indian and Thai populations was high (6.3% in average), giving insights into the potential existence of an RGM species complex in Asia.  相似文献

Kung-Som is a popular traditional Thai fermented shrimp product. It is rich in glutamic acid, which is the major substrate for the biosynthesis of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) by lactic acid bacteria (LAB). In the present study, LAB from Kung-Som were isolated, screened for GABA formation, and the two isolates that transform glutamic acid most efficiently into GABA were identified. Based on the API-CHL50 fermentation profile and a phylogenetic tree of 16S rDNA sequences, strain CS3 and CS5 were identified as Lactobacillus futsaii, which was for the first time shown to be a promising GABA producer. L. futsaii CS3 was the most efficient microorganism for the conversion of 25 mg/mL monosodium glutamate (MSG) to GABA, with a maximum yield of more than 99% conversion rate within 72 h. The open reading frame (ORF) of the glutamate decarboxylase (gad) gene was identified by PCR. It consists of 1410 bp encoding a polypeptide of 469 amino acids with a predicted molecular weight of 53.64 kDa and an isoelectric point (pI) of 5.56. Moreover, a good quality of the constructed model of L. futsaii CS3 was also estimated. Our results indicate that L. futsaii CS3 could be of interest for the production of GABA-enriched foods by fermentation and for other value-added products.  相似文献

Recent critics make William Osler "the father of cool detachment" in medicine, largely because of his "Aequanimitas" address emphasizing objectivity and imperturbability. Closer analysis suggests that Osler's aequanimitas resembles more nearly the metriopatheia of later Stoic philosophy than the apatheia of the early Stoics. A previously unpublished memoir clarifies at least in part Osler's motive for teaching control of the "medullary centres" to minimize facial expression: he did not want to frighten patients, who typically had serious illnesses for which he lacked effective therapy. Twenty-first century challenges to medicine as a profession differ substantially from those of Osler's era. Physicians and educators must focus more closely on the tension between detached concern ("competence") and humanistic empathy ("caring") if medicine is to thrive as a learned profession as opposed to a technical service, a commodity to be bought and sold like any other.  相似文献

The crystal structures of rhodopsin depict the inactive conformation of rhodopsin in the dark. The 11-cis retinoid chromophore, the inverse agonist holding rhodopsin inactive, is well-resolved. Thr118 in helix 3 is the closest amino acid residue next to the 9-methyl group of the chromophore. The 9-methyl group of retinal facilitates the transition from an inactive metarhodopsin I to the active metarhodopsin II intermediate. In this study, a site-specific mutation of Thr118 to the bulkier Trp was made with the idea to induce an active conformation of the protein. The data indicate that such a mutation does indeed result in an active protein that depends on the presence of the ligand, specifically the 9-methyl group. As a result of this mutation, 11-cis retinal has been converted to an agonist. The apoprotein form of this mutant is no more active than the wild-type apoprotein. However, unlike wild-type rhodopsin, the covalent linkage of the ligand can be attacked by hydroxylamine in the dark. The combination of the Thr118Trp mutation and the 9-methyl group of the chromophore behaves as a "steric doorstop" holding the protein in an open and active conformation.  相似文献

As the world watched the Fukushima reactors release radionuclides into the ocean and atmosphere, the warnings of Dr. Alice Stewart about radiation risk and the reassurances of Sir Richard Doll assumed renewed relevance. Doll and Stewart, pioneer cancer epidemiologists who made major contributions in the 1950s-he by demonstrating the link between lung cancer and smoking, she by discovering that fetal X-rays double the chance of a childhood cancer-were locked into opposition about low-dose radiation risk. When she went public with the discovery that radiation at a fraction of the dose "known" to be dangerous could kill a child, her reputation plummeted, whereas Doll, foremost among her detractors, was knighted and lauded as "the world's most distinguished medical epidemiologist" for his work. Their lives and careers, so closely intertwined, took contrary courses, he becoming "more of the establishment" (as he said), while she became more oppositional. When it was discovered, after his death, that he'd been taking large sums of money from industries whose chemicals he was clearing of cancer risk, his reputation remained unscathed; it is now enshrined in the "Authorized Biography" (2009) commissioned by the Wellcome Institute, along with Doll's denigration of Stewart as an "embittered" woman and biased scientist. Stewart lived long enough to see radiation science move her way, to see international committees affirm, in the 1990s, that there is no threshold beneath which radiation ceases to be dangerous; recent evidence from Chernobyl is bearing out her warnings. But a look at the making and breaking of these reputations reveals the power of status, position, and image to shape scientific "knowledge" and social policy.  相似文献

Resonance Raman spectra of the MnII-NO moiety in synthetic nitrosyl manganese heme complexes with and without steric hindrance are reported. The "strapped" hemes having a hydrocarbon strap (variable length) across one face of the heme hinder the perpendicular bonding of a linear ligand. These complexes were employed to investigate the effects of ligand distortion (primarily tilting) on Mn-NO stretching, Mn-N-O bending, and N-O stretching modes. It is demonstrated that ligand distortion in the MnII-NO system is a valid mechanism for causing the resonance enhancement of the Mn-N-O bending mode, similar to that observed in the FeII-CO system (Yu, N.-T., E. A. Kerr, B. Ward, and C. K. Chang. 1983. Biochemistry. 22:4534-4540). More interesting is the observation of the delta(Mn-N-O) enhancement caused by the tilting of the trans Mn-N epsilon bond in the "open" heme complexes (e.g., heme-5 and proto-1X dimethylester) with 1,2-dimethylimidazole or piperidine as a base. The nu(Mn-NO) and nu(N-O) modes exhibit an increase and a decrease, respectively, as the strap length decreases (hence the steric hindrance increases). Both nu(Mn-NO) and nu(N-O) frequencies are insensitive to the strength of the trans base. The results from "strapped" and "open" model heme systems imply that the Mn-N-O geometry is essentially linear and perpendicular in the nitrosyl complexes of monomeric manganese insect hemoglobin CTT IV and sperm whale myoglobin. The unusually low nu(N-O) frequency in the manganese myoglobin complex may be caused by the distal histidine-NO interaction. The delta(Mn-N-O) enhancement in both nitrosyl manganese CTT IV and nitrosyl manganese myoglobin may be caused by a tilting of the Mn"-Nf (proximal histidine) bond.  相似文献

This paper examines the practice of working-class group excursions in Thailand, organized by and for rural labor migrants in Bangkok. These trips involve traditional forms of Buddhist ceremonial as well as more self-consciously "modern" sightseeing activities in distant regions of the country. More than just a welcome respite from the drudgery and discipline of factory jobs, these excursions allow labor migrants to make important claims about their experiences as members of the Thai nation-state. As tourist-consumers, migrant workers appropriate powerful signs and symbols of modern Thai identity and status, in doing so they contest (and at least partly rework) their material and ideological marginalization within contemporary Thai society.  相似文献

Purpose

Due to various environmental pressures such as climate change and scarcity of natural resources, as well as nontariff barriers from trade partners, Thailand has established the Thai national life cycle inventory (LCI) database in 2006. In the 1st phase (2006–2007), three working groups were developed for natural gas, refinery, and petrochemical products. Another seven working groups were established in the 2nd phase (2007–2010) for ferrous and non-ferrous metals, utilities and transportation, construction materials, agricultural materials and products, basic chemicals, recycling and waste management, and others. In the 3rd phase (2010 to present), expansion of the number of data sets from the previous phases has been carried out. The purpose of this paper is to present the experiences on national database development in emerging countries with the example of Thailand on both strategic and technical levels using refinery products as the case study.

Methods

Data sets were developed according to ISO 14044:2006. The LCI data were managed and archived at the central facility known as the “central LCI database”. The Life Cycle Assessment lab (LCA lab) at MTEC, NSTDA, has been responsible for the central LCI database management. From 2008 to 2010, the “Thai national LCI database and its applications” project was granted a 3-year funding of over 50 million THB, and was operated under supervision of a steering committee set up by the Ministry of Industry (MoI). For this case study, to illustrate the development process, primary data of the refinery products were collected by Petroleum Institute of Thailand in the year 2005 from seven refineries covering more than 70 % of the production in the country. Attributional modelling has been used, with energy content as an allocation criterion.

Results and discussion

During the initial phase of the “Thai National LCI Database Development Project”, two key barriers have been faced. One was the lack of awareness from stakeholders as LCI and LCA were quite new tools for most people in Thailand. This problem was tackled by collaborating with the right strategic partners to drive the LCI national project and educating stakeholders with the training supports from Japan. The other hindrance was the lack of expertise of local experts on LCA. It took several years to continually build the capacity through seminars and workshops in Thailand and Japan, including “on the job training” on some pilot projects. As of May 2016, there were more than 700 data sets in the Thai national LCI database, considering only the data that MTEC acted as the project commissioner. However, only 515 data were certified as the national database. The other 211 data were qualified merely as the data from pilot projects. More details of the database list and how to access the data can be viewed in Thai language at the URL: http://www.thailcidatabase.net. Because the Thai national LCI data were mostly primary data from a core set of products for the Thai economy with a very high representativeness (>60 %) of the actual Thai productions, the data have been treated carefully. Only C-to-G data and G-to-G data from literature were allowed to disclose to Thai delegates with some signing agreements. However, G-to-G data from the actual Thai productions were sometimes provided, only with the signing confidentiality contracts. For refinery products, seven average data sets were established as national LCI data sets, i.e. liquefied petroleum gas, sulfur, gasoline, kerosene/jet oil, naphtha, fuel oil and diesel, with the year 2005 as the reference year. The data representativeness was very high covering more than 70 % of the production in Thailand. Due to the positive feedback and engagement from industries, several LCI projects have been started after this initial phase. The national LCI data sets have been used in various national applications and policies such as sustainable biofuels, government green public procurement, green GDP, Thai carbon footprint, etc. However, some relevant limitations of the Thai LCI database were listed as follows. Similar to most surveyed national LCI database worldwide, the climate change impact category has been chosen as the main focus for these data sets. Nevertheless, there is a more growing demand to use the data for other applications. As a result, more data sets that cover other impact categories will be required in the near future. Regarding the nomenclature and format, the Thai data sets were technically unique and not fully compatible with any other database.

Conclusions

The Thai national LCI database could be considered as the pioneer case for other countries in the South East Asia region. Thailand has further progressed in its LCI database development. Since 2009, the Thai national LCI database has been used as one of the key infrastructures of Thailand to support public policies and applications related to green growth. Many Thai stakeholders are well aware on LCI, LCA, and EcoDesign. Expertise of local experts has been increasingly improved. However, there are still more challenges to be faced to harvest the value of the Thai database in its full potential for better decision making in industry and policy, and for better positioning of Thai products on the global markets. From our experience, the following issues could be identified as “lessons learned”. At the onset of the project, it was crucial to get in expert advices from LCA-experienced countries to establish local expertise. Also, industry experts from abroad could help in clarifying the concept and addressing confidentiality concerns, as well as building awareness on LCA to Thai industries. Searching for some supporting programmes for capacity building, such as the GPP from Japan in our case, could provide great benefits to any emerging economies for national LCI initiatives. However, sustaining the trained human resources was also vital. Continual funding supports for LCI development and its applications were necessary to keep the momentum of active people in the field. Multiplying effect of the LCI knowledge to related organizations in the three main groups, i.e. government, academia, and industries, could help sustain the knowhow. Also, effective knowledge management through media such as books, guidelines, training courses, etc. would relief the turnover problem of trained staffs. Although it took a lot of time to develop local expertise, it was an essential step to have sufficient number of local experts to sustain the national database project. Moreover, a strong network of experts and researchers locally and internationally also strengthened the technical capacity to deal with any challenges during the project implementation. Furthermore, collaboration with the right strategic partners to drive the project was also very important in order to elevate it to the national level. It should be noted for any emerging economies aiming to initiate national LCI, the work plan for LCI database development (including the database management system) and its applications should be well balanced. Also, a well-designed database management system would enhance the database usage in the long run, especially when dealing with various impact categories like those in PEF.

Physicians' private clinics in small Northern Thai towns offer the patient the services of official biomedicine's most sophisticated clinical talent, and the physicians themselves an opportunity to significantly supplement their incomes. The clinic form, while familiar to Westerners and Japanese, has been adapted to the Northern Thai medical environment and Northern Thai notions of the therapeutic process. Because of sociocultural constraints and the pressure of the plural medical environment, physicians' private clinics result in a collaboration between patient and practitioner in which some prerogatives of each are compromised and others upheld to shape a clinical institution that satisfies the needs of each. This paper discusses three private clinics in a small Northern Thai town from the perspectives of the physicians and the patients, and then describes the collaboration that shapes practices within the clinics.  相似文献

Archaeologists are interested in understanding the conditions under which hunter-gatherer intensification occurs. Typically, most models assign primacy to population pressure or social relations and address intensification as it occurs among foragers inhabiting arid or temperate environments. In this article, I explore episodes of resource intensification and "deintensification" on the subarctic island of Newfoundland. Correlating periods of resource intensification and "deintensification" with changes in the social landscape, I argue that the presence or absence of "Others" played a significant role in informing hunter-gatherer subsistence strategies and settlement patterns.  相似文献

Purpose

In the near future, the products of Thai industries and companies mainly producing parts and products for export to the European Union (EU) will require the Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) to assess the environmental performance and resource efficiency of products by using a life cycle perspective. The potential generic (often used interchangeably with background data) data have to be modified and improved for mandatory use in the product-specific and country-specific PEF database.

Methods

PEF is used as a tool for assessing the environmental burden of products and services for export to the EU. It requires both specific data from primary sources and generic data to fulfill assessment requirement. Accordingly, the Thai national life cycle inventory (LCI) database plays a key role in generic data that was used to evaluate the environmental performance of products. This paper presents the perspective of Thai data readiness for PEF in which the quality of LCI is the main issue of concern. The current situation of the Thai national LCI database was reviewed. Then, the gaps of data were addressed, and the gaps were also filled. Non-representative data and untreated waste are the selected issues that were presented in this paper.

Results and discussion

Many gaps were revealed for the Thai national LCI database because this database was developed based on ISO 14040/44, which may not be compliant with the PEF guide. The issues that have been selected for improvement are non-representative data and untreated waste because these gaps can offer inaccuracy concerning the environmental burden of products potentially leading to the reliability of products for export to the EU. However, the Thai national LCI database has not achieved the data quality aspects of the PEF, continuously improving the quality of data to meet the requirements of the PEF.

Conclusions

The lessons learned from the real-world situation of data quality development based on PEF requirements were extracted. The practical procedure and recommendations were transparent for drivers and researchers who would like to start with data quality issues and prepare for the EU single market.

The distribution in the human genome of the largest family of mobile elements, the Alu sequences, has been investigated for the past 30 years, and the vast majority of Alu sequences were shown to have the highest density in GC-rich isochores. Ten years ago, it was discovered, however, that the small "youngest" (most recently transposed) Alu families had a strikingly different distribution compared with the "old" families. This raised the question as to how this change took place in evolution. We solved what was considered to be a "mystery" by 1) revisiting our previous results on the integration and stability of retroviral sequences, and 2) assessing the densities of acceptor sites TTTT/AA in isochore families. We could conclude 1) that the open state of chromatin structure plays a crucial role in allowing not only the initial integration of retroviral sequences but also that of the youngest Alu sequences, and 2) that the distribution of old Alus can be explained as due to Alu sequences being unstable in the GC-poor isochores but stable in the compositionally matching GC-rich isochores, again in line with what happens in the case of retroviral sequences.  相似文献

A single exposure to the elevated plus-maze test of anxiety reduces or abolishes the anxiolytic efficacy of benzodiazepines. The present study was designed to examine whether this phenomenon of "one-trial tolerance" resulted from a motivational deficit on trial 2. We hypothesized that whereas there is a motivational conflict on trial 1 in relation to the open arms (exploration drive X natural fear of open spaces), there is no "reason" for an animal to explore it on trial 2. A motivational conflict was introduced on trial 2 by rendering the enclosed arms of the apparatus aversive on trial 1. Thus, every time rats entered the enclosed arms, an aversive situation (light and hot air blow) was produced until they left the arm. On trial 2, rats did not receive this aversive stimulation. Chlordiazepoxide significantly enhanced the percent open arm time as well as the percent open arm entries on trial 2 in rats that had been submitted to the aversive stimulation in the enclosed arms on trial 1, but was not effective in rats which had been exposed to the apparatus in the absence of the aversive stimulation on trial 1. In addition, there was no difference in the percent open arm time and entries on trial 2 between saline-treated rats submitted to the aversive or non-aversive condition on trial 1. The aversive condition on trial 1 did not modify the number of total arm entries on trial 2, either. The results suggest that the anxiolytic effect of chlordiazepoxide in the elevated plus-maze depends on the presence of a motivational conflict situation.  相似文献

The rapid generation of new shapes observed in the living world is the result of genetic variation, especially in "morphological" developmental genes. Many of these genes contain coding tandem repeats. Fondon and Garner have shown that expansions and contractions of these repeats are associated with the great diversity of morphologies observed in the domestic dog, Canis familiaris. In particular, they found that the repeat variations in two genes were significantly associated with changes in limb and skull morphology. These results open the possibility that such a mechanism contributes to the diversity of life.  相似文献
