Twenty-three subjects isokinetically trained the right and left quadriceps femoris, three times per week for 16 weeks; one group (n=13) trained at an angular velocity of 4.19 rad · s–1 and a second group (n=10), at 1.05 rad · s–1. A control group (n=10) performed no training. Isometric endurance time at 60% quadriceps maximum voluntary contraction (MVC), mean power output and work done (W) during all-out cycling, and the muscle buffer value (B) and carnosine concentration of biopsy samples from the vastus lateralis, were all assessed before and after training. The two training groups did not differ significantly from each other in their training response to any of these variables (P < 0.05). No significant difference in either 60% MVC endurance time or impulse [(endurance time × force) at 60% MVC] was observed for any group after the 16 week period (P > 0.05). However, the post-training increase (9%) in W during high-intensity cycling was greater in the training group than in the control group (P=0.04). NeitherB nor carnosine concentration showed any significant change following training (P=0.56 andP=0.37, respectively). It is concluded that 16 weeks of isokinetic training of the knee extensors enables subjects to do more work during high-intensity cycling. Although the precise adaptations responsible for the improved performance have yet to be identified, they are unlikely to include an increase inB.  相似文献

This study examined the effects of dietary manipulation upon the respiratory exchange ratio (R = VCO2/VO2) as a predictor of maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max). Seven healthy males performed fixed term maximal incremental treadmill exercise after an overnight fast on three separate occasions. The first test took place after the subjects had consumed their normal mixed diet (45 +/- 5% carbohydrate (CHO] for a period of three days. This test protocol was then repeated after three days of a low CHO diet (3 +/- 2% CHO), and again after three days of a high CHO diet (61 +/- 5% CHO). Respiratory gases were continuously monitored during each test using an on-line system. No significant changes in mean exercise oxygen uptake (VO2), VO2max or maximum functional heart rate (FHRmax) were found between tests. Mean exercise carbon dioxide output (VCO2) and R were significantly lower than normal after the low CHO diet (both p less than 0.001) and significantly higher than normal after the high CHO diet (both p less than 0.05). Moreover, compared with the normal CHO diet, the R-time relationship during exercise was at all times significantly (p less than 0.001) shifted to the right after the low CHO diet, and shifted to the left, being significantly so (p less than 0.05) over the final 5 min of exercise, after the high CHO diet.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Background

Resistance exercise alters the post-exercise response of anabolic and catabolic hormones. A previous study indicated that the turnover of muscle protein in trained individuals is reduced due to alterations in endocrine factors caused by resistance training, and that muscle protein accumulation varies between trained and untrained individuals due to differences in the timing of protein and carbohydrate intake. We investigated the effect of the timing of protein and carbohydrate intake after resistance exercise on nitrogen balance in trained and untrained young men.

Methods

Subjects were 10 trained healthy men (mean age, 23 ± 4 years; height, 173.8 ± 3.1 cm; weight, 72.3 ± 4.3 kg) and 10 untrained healthy men (mean age, 23 ± 1 years; height, 171.8 ± 5.0 cm; weight, 64.5 ± 5.0 kg). All subjects performed four sets of 8 to 10 repetitions of a resistance exercise (comprising bench press, shoulder press, triceps pushdown, leg extension, leg press, leg curl, lat pulldown, rowing, and biceps curl) at 80% one-repetition maximum. After each resistance exercise session, subjects were randomly divided into two groups with respect to intake of protein (0.3 g/kg body weight) and carbohydrate (0.8 g/kg body weight) immediately after (P0) or 6 h (P6) after the session. All subjects were on an experimental diet that met their individual total energy requirement. We assessed whole-body protein metabolism by measuring nitrogen balance at P0 and P6 on the last 3 days of exercise training.

Results

The nitrogen balance was significantly lower in the trained men than in the untrained men at both P0 (P <0.05) and P6 (P <0.01). The nitrogen balance in trained men was significantly higher at P0 than at P6 (P <0.01), whereas that in the untrained men was not significantly different between the two periods.

Conclusion

The timing of protein and carbohydrate intake after resistance exercise influences nitrogen balance differently in trained and untrained young men.  相似文献

Six healthy male subjects exercised after an overnight fast for a fixed 3 min period at a workload equivalent to 100% of their maximal oxygen uptake ( ) on 3 separate occasions. The first test took place after subjects had consumed a mixed diet (43±3% carbohydrate (CHO), 41±5% fat and 16±3% protein) for 3 days, and was followed 2 h later by prolonged cycling to exhaustion at 77±3% to deplete muscle glycogen stores. Following this, subjects consumed a low CHO diet (4±1% CHO, 63±5% fat and 33±6% protein) for the remainder of the day and for the subsequent 2 days; on the morning of the next day a second high intensity test took place. Finally subjects followed a 3 day high CHO diet (73±7% CHO, 17±6% fat and 10±1% protein) before their last test. Acid-base status and selected metabolites were measured on arterialised-venous blood at rest prior to exercise and at intervals for 15 min following exercise. Prior to exercise, plasma pH and blood lactate concentration were higher (p<0.05) after the high CHO diet when compared with the low CHO diet. Pre-exercise plasma bicarbonate, blood PCO2 and blood base excess were all higher after the high (p<0.001,p<0.01,p<0.01 respectively) and normal (p<0.05,p<0.05,p<0.05 respectively) CHO diets when compared with the low CHO diet. During the post-exercise period there were no differences in plasma pH or blood base excess between the three experimental situations; plasma bicarbonate was higher (p<0.05) at 2 min post-exercise after the high CHO diet when compared with the low CHO diet; blood PCO2 was higher throughout the post-exercise period after the high CHO diet when compared with the low CHO diet and at 2 min post-exercise was higher after the normal CHO diet than after the low CHO diet (p<0.5). The post-exercise blood lactate concentration after the high CHO diet was at all times higher than the corresponding values recorded after the normal CHO diet and until 15 min post-exercise was significantly higher than the values recorded after the low CHO diet. The present experiment further substantiates the view that a pattern of dietary and exercise manipulation can significantly influence the acid-base status of the blood and by doing so may influence high intensity exercise performance.  相似文献

The aim of this research was to determine whether creatine supplementation at a dose of 20 g · day−1, given in 4 × 6-g doses (5 g creatine monohydrate and 1 g glucose) for 5 days, was effective in improving kayak ergometer performances of different durations. Sixteen male subjects with the following characteristics [mean (SEM)]: age 21 (1.2) years, height 170.2 (1.7) cm, weight 75.3 (2.3) kg, Σ8 skinfolds 59.3 (2.6) mm, and maximal oxygen consumption 67.1 ± (4.3) ml · kg · min−1, undertook three maximal kayak ergometer tests of 90, 150 and 300 s duration on a wind-braked kayak ergometer (CON). Two groups were then randomly formed, with one group taking the supplement (SUP) while the other took a placebo (PLAC). No pre-test differences existed between the SUP and the PLAC groups in any of the variables measured. After supplementation each group then repeated the same kayak ergometer tests as performed previously and after a 4-week “washout period” the groups took either the PLAC or SUP for another 5 days and then completed the final tests. The SUP group completed significantly more work than either the CON or PLAC groups in all of the tests (90 s, P < 0.01; 150 s, P < 0.001; 300 s, P < 0.05). Body mass remained stable throughout the test period in both the CON and PLAC groups, but both were significantly less than the SUP body mass of 77.3 (1.0) kg (P < 0.01). The results of this work indicate that creatine supplementation can significantly increase the amount of work accomplished during kayak ergometer performance at durations ranging from 90 to 300 s. Glutamine is an essential substrate for the proper functioning of cells of the immune system. Falls in plasma glutamine concentration after exercise may have deleterious consequences for immune cell function and render the individual more susceptible to infection. The purpose of the present study was to examine changes in plasma glutamine concentration (measured using a validated enzymatic spectrophotometric method) following an acute bout of intermittent high-intensity exercise. Eight well-trained male games players took part in the study. Subjects reported to the laboratory following an overnight fast and performed a 1-h cycle exercise task consisting of 20 1-min periods at 100% maximal O2 consumption (O2max) each separated by 2 min of recovery at 30% O2max. Venous blood samples were taken before exercise and at 5 min, 1 h, 2.5 h, 5 h and 24 h post-exercise. Glutamine was measured by enzymatic spectrophotometric determination of the ammonia concentration before and after treatment of the plasma with glutaminase (EC 3.5.1.2). Plasma glutamine concentration did not fall in the immediate post-exercise period [pre-exercise 681 (23) μM compared with 663 (46) μM at 5 min post-exercise, mean (SEM)], but fell to 572 (35) μM at 5 h post-exercise (P < 0.05 compared with pre-exercise). Plasma lactate concentration rose to 8.8 (1.0) mM at the end of exercise and fell to 1.8 (0.4) mM at 1 h post-exercise, but plasma concentrations of free fatty acids and β-hydroxybutyrate both rose substantially in the post-exercise period (to 240% and 400% of pre-exercise levels, respectively). The circulating leucocyte count increased significantly during exercise (P < 0.01), continued to increase in the hours following exercise and peaked at 2.5 h post-exercise (mainly due to a neutrophilia). The fall in the plasma glutamine concentration at 5 h post-exercise could be due to increased renal uptake of glutamine, which generally occurs in conditions of metabolic acidosis or due to a greater removal of glutamine from the plasma resulting from the elevated circulating leucocyte count. The purpose of the present study was to determine if old individuals show a greater exercise-induced decrement in motor performance and slower recovery compared to young individuals. Ten college-age women (23.6 years) and ten older women (67.4 years) performed an exercise consisting of 24 eccentric actions of the forearm flexors. In young subjects, eccentric exercise is known to produce repairable muscle damage. Before the exercise and for 5 days after, isometric strength, soreness, reaction time, and movement time were measured. For both groups, strength was reduced and soreness developed in the days following the exercise, generally indicating that muscle damage had occurred. The older subjects showed a slower strength recovery such that by 5 days after exercise they had not returned to their initial level of strength. There was no significant difference in soreness development between groups. Reaction time and movement time were not adversely affected by the exercise. Thus, the older subjects demonstrated a slower strength recovery after damage-inducing exercise, and, with regard to response speed, the older subjects could compensate for the impaired muscle function as well as the younger subjects.  相似文献

In this study, we evaluated the hypothesis that long term dietary restriction would have beneficial effects on the oxidative stress and antioxidant enzyme systems in liver, heart and kidney in adult male rats undergoing different intensities of swimming exercise. Sixty male, Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned as either dietary restricted on every other week day (DR) or fed ad libitum (AL) groups, and each group was further subdivided into sedentary, endurance swimming exercise training (submaximal exercise) and exhaustive swimming exercise (maximal exercise) groups. Animals in the submaximal exercise group swam 5 days/week for 8 weeks, while maximal exercise was performed as an acute bout of exercise. In parallel with the increase in the intensity of the exercise, the degree of lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation were increased in both the DR and AL groups; however the rate of increase was lower in the DR group. Reduced glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and glutathione reductase (GR) enzyme activities were lower in the DR group than in the AL group. In parallel with the increase in exercise intensity, GSH and GR enzyme activities decreased, whereas an increase was observed in GSH-Px enzyme activity. In conclusion, the comparison between the DR and AL groups with the three swimming exercise conditions shows that the DR group is greatly protected against different swimming exercise-induced oxidative stress compared with the AL group.  相似文献

All systemically administered glucocorticoids (GC) are prohibited in-competition, because of the potential ergogenic effects. Although short-term GC intake has been shown to improve performance during submaximal exercise, literature on its impact during brief intense exercise appears to be very scant. The purpose of this study was to examine the ergogenic and metabolic effects of prednisone during repeated bouts of high-intensity exercise. In a double-blind randomized protocol, ten recreational male athletes followed two 1-week treatments (Cor: prednisone, 60 mg/day or Pla: placebo). At the end of each treatment, they hopped on their dominant leg for 30 s three times consecutively and then hopped until exhaustion, with intervals of 5 min of passive recovery. Blood and saliva samples were collected at rest and 3 min after each exercise bout to determine the lactate, interleukin-6, interleukin-10, TNF-alpha, DHEA and testosterone values. The absolute peak force of the dominant leg was significantly increased by Cor but only during the first 30-s hopping bout (p < 0.05), whereas time to exhaustion was not significantly changed after Cor treatment vs Pla (Pla: 119.9 ± 24.7; Cor: 123.1 ± 29.5 s). Cor intake lowered basal and end-exercise plasma interleukin-6 and saliva DHEA (p < 0.01) and increased interleukin-10 (p < 0.01), whereas no significant change was found in blood lactate and TNF-alpha or saliva testosterone between Pla and Cor. According to these data, short-term glucocorticoid intake did not improve endurance performance during repeated bouts of high-intensity exercise, despite the significant initial increase in absolute peak force and anti-inflammatory effect.  相似文献

This investigation evaluated the influence of metabolic alkalosis on plasma ammonia (NH3) accumulation during incremental exercise. On two occasions separated by at least 6 days, six healthy men cycled at 70, 80, and 90%g of maximum oxygen consumption ( ) for 5 min; each exercise period was followed by 5 min of seated recovery. Exercise was then performed at 100% until exhaustion. Beginning 3 h prior to exercise, subjects ingested 3.6 mmol · kg body mass NaHCO3 (test, T) or 3.0 mmol · kg body mass–1 CaCO3 (placebo, P) (both equivalent to 0.3 g · kg–1) over a 2-h period. Trials were performed after an overnight fast and the order of treatments was randomized. Arterialized venous blood samples for the determination of acid-base status, blood lactate and plasma NH3 concentrations were obtained at rest before treatment, 15 s prior to each exercise bout (Pre 70%, Pre 80%, Pre 90%, and Pre 100%), and at 0, 5 (5Post), and 10 (10'Post) min after exhaustion. Additional samples for blood lactate and plasma NH3 determination were obtained immediately after each exercise bout (Post 70%, Post 80%, Post 90%) and at 15 min after exercise (15Post). Time to exhaustion at 100% of was not significantly different between treatments [mean (SE): 173 (42) s and 184 (44) s for T and P respectively]. A significant treatment effect was observed for plasma pH with values being significantly higher on T than on P Pre 70% [7.461 (0.007) vs 7.398 (0.008)], Pre 90% [7.410 (0.010) vs 7.340 (0.016)], and 10'Post [7.317 (0.032) vs 7.242 (0.036)]. The change in plasma pH was significantly greater following the 90%g bout (Pre 100% Pre 90%) for T [–0.09 (0.02)] than for P [–0.06 (0.01)]. Blood base excess and plasma bicarbonate concentrations were significantly higher for T than P before each exercise bout but not at the point of exhaustion. During recovery, base excess was higher for T than P at 5Post and 10Post while the bicarbonate concentration was higher for T than P at 10Post. A significant treatment effect was observed for the blood lactate concentration with T on the average being higher than P [7.0 (1.0) and 6.3 (1.1) mmol · l–1 for T and P averaged across the 12 sampling times]. Plasma NH3 accumulation was not different between treatments at any point in time. In addition, no differences were observed between treatments in blood alanine accumulation. The results suggest that under the conditions of the present investigation metabolic alkalosis does not influence plasma NH3 accumulation or endurance capacity during intense incremental exercise.  相似文献

In an effort to determine the effects of carbohydrate (CHO) feedings immediately before exercise in both the fasted and fed state, 10 well-trained male cyclists [maximum O2 consumption (VO2 max), 4.35 +/- 0.11 l/min)] performed 45 min of cycling at 77% VO2 max followed by a 15-min performance ride on an isokinetic cycle ergometer. After a 12-h fast, subjects ingested 45 g of liquid carbohydrate (LCHO), solid carbohydrate confectionery bar (SCHO), or placebo (P) 5 min before exercise. An additional trial was performed in which a high-CHO meal (200 g) taken 4 h before exercise was combined with a confectionery bar feeding (M + SCHO) immediately before the activity. At 10 min of exercise, serum glucose values were elevated by 18 and 24% during SCHO and LCHO, respectively, compared with P. At 0 and 45 min no significant differences were observed in muscle glycogen concentration or total use between the four trials. Total work produced during the final 15 min of exercise was significantly greater (P less than 0.05) during M + SCHO (194,735 +/- 9,448 N X m), compared with all other trials and significantly greater (P less than 0.05) during LCHO and SCHO (175,204 +/- 11,780 and 176,013 +/- 10,465 N X m, respectively) than trial P (159,143 +/- 11,407 N X m). These results suggest that, under conditions when CHO stores are less than optimal, exercise performance is enhanced with the ingestion of 45 g of CHO 5 min before 1 h of intense cycling.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The effects of dietary boric acid on bone strength in rats   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The effects of dietary boron (B) (from boric acid [BA]) on bone strength were evaluated using male F344 rats. B was administered by dietary admixture of BA to NIH-07 feed at concentrations of 200, 1000, 3000, and 9000 ppm. The latter two levels were found in previous studies to be reproductively toxic to both males and the developing fetus. The first two levels are below and just at, respectively, the levels for producing fetal malformations, and are below the dose required to produce male reproductive toxicity. Resistance to destructive testing was measured on femora, tibiae, and lumbar vertebrae. Although femur and tibia resistance to bending force were not affected by any amount of dietary B, vertebral resistance to a crushing force was increased by ≈10%, at all dose levels (200-9000 ppm). These data show that even levels of BA that are not reproductively toxic can affect the strength of the axial skeleton in rats.  相似文献

Thermal stress is known to impair endurance capacity during moderate prolonged exercise. However, there is relatively little available information concerning the effects of thermal stress on the performance of high-intensity short-duration exercise. The present experiment examined human power output during repeated bouts of short-term maximal exercise. On two separate occasions, seven healthy males performed two 30-s bouts of sprint exercise (sprints I and II), with 4 min of passive recovery in between, on a cycle ergometer. The sprints were performed in both a normal environment [18.7 (1.5) degrees C, 40 (7)% relative humidity (RH; mean SD)] and a hot environment [30.1 (0.5) degrees C, 55 (9)% RH]. The order of exercise trials was randomised and separated by a minimum of 4 days. Mean power, peak power and decline in power output were calculated from the flywheel velocity after correction for flywheel acceleration. Peak power output was higher when exercise was performed in the heat compared to the normal environment in both sprint I [910 (172) W vs 656 (58) W; P < 0.01] and sprint II [907 (150) vs 646 (37) W; P < 0.05]. Mean power output was higher in the heat compared to the normal environment in both sprint I [634 (91) W vs 510 (59) W; P < 0.05] and sprint II [589 (70) W vs 482 (47) W; P < 0.05]. There was a faster rate of fatigue (P < 0.05) when exercise was performed in the heat compared to the normal environment. Arterialised-venous blood samples were taken for the determination of acid-base status and blood lactate and blood glucose before exercise, 2 min after sprint I, and at several time points after sprint II. Before exercise there was no difference in resting acid-base status or blood metabolites between environmental conditions. There was a decrease in blood pH, plasma bicarbonate and base excess after sprint I and after sprint II. The degree of post-exercise acidosis was similar when exercise was performed in either of the environmental conditions. The metabolic response to exercise was similar between environmental conditions; the concentration of blood lactate increased (P < 0.01) after sprint I and sprint II but there were no differences in lactate concentration when comparing the exercise bouts performed in a normal and a hot environment. These data demonstrate that when brief intense exercise is performed in the heat, peak power output increases by about 25% and mean power output increases by 15%; this was due to achieving a higher pedal cadence in the heat.  相似文献

The effects of carbohydrate and fat intake on exercise-induced fatigue was investigated in 30 untrained--(VO2max of 40.6 +/- 2.7 ml X kg-1 X min-1) and 24 trained-subjects (VO2max of 52.3 +/- 2.7 ml X kg-1 X min-1) performing a 34 km march with a 25 kg backpack. Marching time was 8 1/2 h and 6 1/3 h in the untrained and trained-subjects respectively. The subjects were divided into 3 dietary groups. One group had free access to sugar cubes, the second group was offered almonds and the third one served as a control. Triglyceride levels decreased by 65 mg X dl-1 in untrained, and by 115 mg X dl-1 in trained subjects, while blood glucose remained at normal levels. In the untrained subjects, ingestion of almonds delayed the subjective sensation of exhaustion, while 50% of the controls and the sugar consuming subjects complained of exhaustion. The data suggest that ingestion of food containing fat delays exercise induced exhaustion or fatigue to a greater extent than does carbohydrate ingestion.  相似文献

[Purpose]

This study investigated the effects of high-intensity exercise (Ex) and high dietary fat intake on lipid metabolism in the liver of rats.

[Methods]

Male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to one of the four groups (n=10 per group) that were maintained on a normal diet (ND) or high-fat diet (HFD) consisting of 30% fat (w/w), with or without exercise on a treadmill at 30 m/min and 8% grade) for 4 weeks (i.e., ND, ND+Ex, HFD, and HFD+Ex groups).

[Results]

Body weight (p<.001), total plasma cholesterol (TC) (p<.001), triglyceride (TG) (p<.05), and liver TG levels (p<.05) were increased in the HFD group relative to the ND groups, and serum glucose (p<.05), insulin (p<.05), homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) (p<.01), and liver TG levels (p<.01) were also higher in the HFD group compared to the ND+Ex group. Plasma free fatty acid was elevated in the HFD+Ex group compared to the HFD group (p<.01). With the exception of acetyl coenzyme A carboxylase, the expression of lipid metabolism-related genes in the liver was altered in the Ex groups compared to the control group (p<.05), with genes involved in lipolysis specifically up regulated in the HFD+Ex group compared to the other groups.

[Conclusion]

Vigorous exercise may increase glucose utilization and fat oxidation by activating genes in the liver that are associated with lipid metabolism compared to that in animals consuming a HFD without exercise. Therefore, high intensity exercise can be considered to counter the adverse effects of high dietary fat intake.  相似文献

The effect of a pattern of exercise and dietary modification, which is normally used to alter muscle glycogen content, upon the acid-base status of the blood and the ability to perform high intensity exercise was studied. Eleven healthy male subjects cycled to exhaustion on an electrically braked cycle ergometer at a workload equivalent to 100% of their maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) on three separate occasions. The first exercise test took place after a normal diet (46.2 +/- 6.7% carbohydrate (CHO)), and was followed by prolonged exercise to exhaustion to deplete muscle glycogen stores. The second test was performed after three days of a low carbohydrate diet (10.1 +/- 6.8% CHO) and subsequently after three days of a high CHO diet (65.5 +/- 9.8% CHO) the final test took place. Acid-base status and selected metabolites were measured on arterialised venous blood at rest prior to exercise and during the post-exercise period. Exercise time to exhaustion was longer after the normal (p less than 0.05) and high (p less than 0.05). CHO dietary phases compared with the low CHO phase. Resting pre-exercise pH was higher after the high CHO diet (p less than 0.05) compared with the low CHO diet. Pre-exercise bicarbonate, PCO2 and base excess measurements were higher after the high CHO treatment compared with both the normal (p less than 0.01, p less than 0.05, p less than 0.01 respectively) and low CHO phases (p less than 0.001, p less than 0.01, p less than 0.001 respectively.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

To study whethersucrose administration acts on lipid mobilization during prolongedexercise, we used subcutaneous abdominal adipose tissue microdialysisin eight well-trained subjects submitted at random to two 100-minexercises (50% maximal aerobic power) on separate days. After 50 minof exercise, the subjects ingested either a sucrose solution (0.75 g/kgbody wt) or water. By using a microdialysis probe, dialysate wasobtained every 10 min from the subjects at rest, during exercise, andduring a 30-min recovery period. During exercise without sucrose, plasma and dialysate glycerol increased significantly. With sucrose, the response was significantly lower for dialysate glycerol(P < 0.05). Plasma free fatty acidlevel was lower after sucrose than after water ingestion(P < 0.05). With water ingestion, plasma catecholamines increased significantly, whereas insulin fell(P < 0.05). With sucrose ingestion, the epinephrine response was blunted, whereas the insulin level wassignificantly increased. In conclusion, the use of adipose tissuemicrodialysis directly supports a lower lipid mobilization duringexercise when sucrose is supplied, which confirms that the availabilityof carbohydrate influences lipid mobilization.

Sources of variance in dietary intake data for infants in the fourth to sixth months of life were examined. Twenty-eight mothers of infants in the Special Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants, and Children gave 24-hr recall information on their infants' diets on 4 random days over approximately 1 month. ANOVA found no day of the week or sequence effects on nutrient variation. Variance was partitioned into between- and within-subject (residual) components. Interindividual variation exceeded intraindividual variation for all nutrients except vitamin C. Variance ratios ranged from 0.3 to 1.3. Calculations of 95% confidence limits for group and individual mean intakes indicated that, whereas a single recall would estimate the group mean within 20% for most nutrients, five recalls would be necessary for the same accuracy in individual means. Magnitude and patterning of variance components differ substantially from those found in studies of adults, suggesting that infant data collection strategies should be tailored to the unique nature of the infant diet.  相似文献
