Three species of sea-lice (Siphonostomatoida: Caligidae) parasitic on marine fishes of the genus Caranx off Taiwan are reported. They are: Caligus fortis Kabata, 1965 on Caranx ignobilis (Forsskål); Caligus robustus Bassett-Smith, 1898 on Caranx sexfasciatus Quoy &; Gaimard; and Caligus inanis n. sp. on Caranx ignobilis. Caligus robustus is a widely distributed species, but this is the first report of C. fortis outside the Australian and Indian regions. The new species is distinguished from its congeners in lacking postantennal process and carrying a pair of tiny, tooth-like, sharp protuberances on the posterior margin of the cephalothoracic shield.  相似文献

This study provides growth rate, longevity and maturity estimates for the two important species of jack in Hawaiʻi: ulua aukea/giant trevally Caranx ignobilis and omilu/bluefin trevally Caranx melampygus. Maximum observed ages for C. ignobilis and C. melampygus were 31 years and 24 years, respectively. Combined sex von Bertalanffy growth parameter values for C. ignobilis and C. melampygus were as follows: L = 1064 mm and K = 0.18 year−1; and L = 718 mm and K = 0.20 year−1, respectively. Female size at maturity was significantly greater than males for both C. ignobilis and C. melampygus. Size and age at maturity for C. ignobilis was 594 mm and 4.4 years for females and 465 mm and 2.8 years for males. Size and age at maturity for C. melampygus was 372 mm and 4.1 years for females and 329 mm and 2.9 years for males. This study provides the first robust demographic data for both of these highly prized and ecologically important predatory species in Hawaiʻi, which can be used for future assessments or management.  相似文献

Zooplankton were collected from Lake Taal between January and December 2008 in order to test for differences in species composition and abundance between a lake basin with intensive fish cage (FC) aquaculture and an open water area without FCs. Most species showed similar patterns of occurrence in both basins while having differences in abundance. Several rotifer species were more abundant in FC sites most of the year, while for microcrustaceans higher abundances in FC sites only happened during the first 2 months. Their distribution is attributed to the presence of higher nutrient levels in FC sites as well as wind-induced basin-wide water movements during the different monsoon seasons which disperse plankton and nutrients from FC sites to other parts of the lake. Zooplanktonic indicators, such as the BrachionusTrichocerca quotient (Q B/T) and the ratio of calanoids to cladocerans and cyclopoids, clearly demonstrate the eutrophic state of the lake. A comparison with previous studies suggests that the lake was already eutrophic prior to the introduction of aquaculture in the 1970s. The trophic conditions in Lake Taal may be attributed to the lakes’ tropical and volcanic nature, with productivity further enhanced by increased nutrient input from aquaculture.  相似文献

A number of researchers have applied multivariate methods to elucidate the population structure of fishes. In this study, we also used multivariate techniques to examine meristic and morphological variations in the silver perch, Leiopotherapon plumbeus (Kner, 1864), from three Philippine lakes, namely, Laguna de Bay, Sampaloc Lake, and Taal Lake. We also aimed to determine whether or not there are meristic and morphological differences among the populations of silver perch from the three lakes, considering that this fish species was introduced from Laguna de Bay into Sampaloc Lake and Taal Lake in the late 1950s and early 1970s, respectively. A total of 710 specimens from four different sites were used in the study: 155 each from Binangonan and Tanay areas of Laguna de Bay and 200 each from Sampaloc Lake and Taal Lake. Based on analysis of variance, eight meristic and 26 transformed morphometric characters were selected for subsequent analyses. Nineteen (19) principal components extracted from the 34 significant variables accounted for 82.3% of the variation in the original variables. Factor analysis using varimax rotation produced four factors: factor 1 was dominated by fin measurements while the highest loadings for factor 2 were gill raker counts. Factors 3 and 4 were dominated by various body and head measurements. Cluster analysis showed specimens from Sampaloc Lake and Taal Lake in one group, while majority of the specimens from Binangonan and Tanay are in another cluster. This suggests a closer morphological similarity between specimens from Sampaloc and Taal. Discriminant analysis gave relatively high correct classification rates (76.13–95.50%). Lower gill raker count was the most discriminating variable. Since both the silver perch from Sampaloc Lake and Taal Lake were introduced from Laguna de Bay, the observed clustering and morphological variation could be attributed to similarities and differences in the lake environments. Laguna de Bay is a shallow eutrophic lake, while Sampaloc Lake and Taal Lake are deep lakes. Further studies, however, are needed to determine which of the myriad of biological and/or physico–chemical factors might have the greatest influence on the observed morphological divergence between the source population and transplanted populations that we found in our study.  相似文献

On evolutionary timescales, sea level oscillations lead to recurrent spatio‐temporal variation in species distribution and population connectivity. In this situation, applying classical concepts of biogeography is challenging yet necessary to understand the mechanisms underlying biodiversity in highly diverse marine ecosystems such as coral reefs. We aimed at studying the outcomes of such complex biogeographic dynamics on reproductive isolation by sampling populations across a wide spatial range of a species‐rich fish genus: the sergeants (Pomacentridae: Abudefduf). We generated a mutlilocus data set that included ten morpho‐species from 32 Indo‐West Pacific localities. We observed a pattern of mito‐nuclear discordance in two common and widely distributed species: Abudefduf sexfasciatus and Abudefduf vaigiensis. The results showed three regional sublineages (Indian Ocean, Coral Triangle region, western Pacific) in A. sexfasciatus (0.6–1.5% divergence at cytb). The other species, A. vaigiensis, is polyphyletic and consists of three distinct genetic lineages (A, B and C) (9% divergence at cytb) whose geographic ranges overlap. Although A. vaigiensis A and A. sexfasciatus were found to be distinct based on nuclear information, A. vaigiensis A was found to be nested within A. sexfasciatus in the mitochondrial gene tree. A. sexfasciatus from the Coral Triangle region and A. vaigiensis A were not differentiated from each other at the mitochondrial locus. We then used coalescent‐based simulation to characterize a spatially widespread but weak gene flow between the two species. We showed that these fishes are good candidates to investigate the evolutionary complexity of the discrepancies between phenotypic and genetic similarity in closely related species.  相似文献

Philippine sardines are members of the commercially important Sardinella genus (Family Clupeidae). Sardines are mostly marine species with a very few exception like the Philippine freshwater sardine, Sardinella tawilis, of Lake Taal. This species is believed to have immigrated from Balayan Bay some 250 years ago. To determine the relationship of freshwater S. tawilis to the marine forms, 35 biometric features were investigated. The variables were subjected to univariate (mean, standard deviation and coefficient of variance) and multivariate analyses [Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Hierarchical Cluster Analysis]. Results from univariate tests revealed that the number of ventral fin ray can discriminate Sardinella lemuru from the rest of the sardines. Multivariate PCA, on the other hand, showed discrete separation of the marine sardines. Sardinella tawilis, however, cannot be clearly separated from the marine species, Sardinella albella. The same clustering was recovered in HCA, thus providing evidence that S. albella is the closest marine relative of the freshwater S. tawilis.  相似文献

Gonad development of the silver therapon Leiopotherapon plumbeus in two volcanic crater  lake  habitats (Sampaloc Lake, Taal Lake) in south Luzon, Philippines was examined during the annual reproductive cycle. The minimum body size‐at‐maturity of fish in these two lake habitats was also compared. Four gonad development stages were characterized as basis for the classification of ovarian (immature, maturing, mature, spawned) and testicular maturation (immature, maturing, mature) phases. The occurrence of all development stages in individual gonads suggest an asynchronous development whereby advanced stages are recruited continuously from a pool of younger stage germ cells to result in elevated female and male GSI throughout the annual cycle due to active gonadogenesis. Together with the increasing occurrence of advanced stage oocytes and spermatozoa from March until October, the elevated GSI of fish may indicate peak gonadal growth during the onset of the dry season (December–January) for eventual spawning from the beginning (May–June) until the end of the wet season (October–November). In both lake habitats, male fish were smaller than females but, regardless of sex, the minimum size‐at‐maturity of fish in Sampaloc Lake was significantly smaller than fish in Taal Lake. Overall, asynchronous development during oogenesis and spermatogenesis allows for year‐round reproduction of silver therapon, with elevated gonad growth in the dry season in preparation for spawning during the wet season. Compared with fish in Taal Lake, a smaller size‐at‐maturity of fish in Sampaloc Lake may be a response of the wild fishery stock to long‐term high fishing mortality and degradation of the lake habitat.  相似文献

This study describes the length–weight relationship (LWR) of Pseudophoxinus alii from the Yamansaz Lake, a coastal freshwater lake in Antalya, Turkey. A total of 105 specimens were obtained using a variety of nets between April 2007 and March 2008. Total lengths ranged from 3.4 to 14.3 cm. The length–weight relationship showed a positive allometric growth (b = 3.012; R2 = 0.988). The study presents the first reference on LWR for this threatened species. The results also indicate a new maximum total length not previously reported in the international literature.  相似文献

The aragonite shells of 55 mollusc specimens from the late Early and early Middle Miocene of two palaeolakes of the Dinaride Lake System (DLS) are analysed for their δ18O and δ13C signatures. The data set has a bimodal distribution with a prominent peak between −3 and −4‰ for both isotopes and a second much weaker peak at more depleted values of c. −9 to −7‰. Taxa with ‘heavy’ values are interpreted to represent the inhabitants of the shores or shallow areas of the lake. Depleted values are attributed to species preferring freshwater habitats of springs or small rivulets, thus representing the freshwater end-member. The overall rather high values in both stable isotopes result from a combination of evaporation effects and the influx of already isotopically heavy freshwater from the karstic catchment area. Thus, the DLS is interpreted as a closed freshwater system without marine influence but with enough contribution of freshwater to keep the oxygen values close to −5‰. Mean lake surface water temperatures, based on the δ18Oshell values, excluding the freshwater end-member taxa, range around roughly 19–21°C. Despite the problems in calculating these temperatures, the values are in agreement with mean annual air temperatures deduced from the palaeobotanic record by applying the Coexistence Approach method. The seasonal range was around 10–11°C and is mainly recorded in shells from lake settings. Taxa with freshwater end-member signatures lack this range due to the more stable temperature regime and less fluctuating dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) pool. Congeneric species from the same stratigraphic horizon often display discrete but different isotope signatures. This fact suggests habitat segregation and might be a major factor for sympatric speciation and the endemic radiation within the mollusc fauna of the DLS.  相似文献

The paper reports the length–weight relationships of 3 species from the Poyang Lake, the largest freshwater lake freely connect to the Yangtze River, China. A total of 1,207 specimens were collected seasonally (January, April, September and November, 2010) using various types of fishing gear nets (mesh size: 1–12 cm) and stationary lift nets (mesh size: 0.7–4.4 cm). For each species, the sample size, length range, weight range, LWR, 95% confidence intervals of a and b, and coefficient of correlation were determined. Length‐weight relationships for 1 species were unknown to FishBase, and new maximum lengths are recorded for 2 species.  相似文献

Turkey’s natural and ecological situations are very suitable for aquaculture. Turkey also has a wide variety of freshwater and marine species comprising trout, carp, sea bass, sea bream, turbot, mussel, crayfish, etc. The total production of fish and shellfish was 646,310 tons in 2008. The contribution of freshwater catch to total fishery production is relatively small. Capture fisheries production amounted to 494,124 tons whilst aquaculture production was 152,186 tons in the same year. In Turkey, Engraulis encrasicholus (anchovy) is the main caught sea fish species. Fisheries in the Black Sea are the most important fishery by far and show the greatest variations in total catch. Alburnus tarichii (a local species belonging to Cyprinidae) and Cyprinus carpio (the common carp) are the most important species caught from freshwaters. Aquaculture is going to play an increasingly important role in the Turkish economy, as fishery products are the only products of animal origin that can be exported to the EU. There has been a fast increase in the aquaculture production in Turkey with the implementation of scientific and technological modernization. For example, total aquaculture production for 1986 and 2008 was 3,075 and 152,186 tons, respectively. The percentage of aquaculture in total fish production has been rising every year. The ratio of cultured fish production to total fish production was 1.5% in 1990 s, 13.57% in 2000 and more than 20% in 2005. It was 23.55% in 2008. Trouts are the main cultured freshwater fish species. Raceways and floating cages are employed in culture of trout. Carps are also important cultured freshwater fish species. Sea bass and gilthead sea bream are grown marine fish species. Floating cages, off-shore and earthen ponds are used for marine fish species culture. There has been an increase in fishery exports and imports in recent years. It was more than US500 million in 2008, but that of 2004 was just over US 500 million in 2008, but that of 2004 was just over US 233 million. However, aquaculture production is still far away from the production targets and fisheries sector is not an important part of the economy at present.  相似文献

Dietary fish must be assessed for benefits and risks to formulate risk management strategies. This article demonstrates that Laurentian Great Lakes (GL) freshwater species are good sources of omega-3 fatty acids using new data from a small sample (n = 7) of Lake Superior siscowet lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush siscowet) and five other GL fish species’ data. For Lake Superior (LS) siscowets, the saturates, mono-unsaturates, and poly-unsaturates composed 20.1, 40.7, and 39.1% of total lipid weight, respectively. Omega-3 poly-unsaturates (PUFAs) in these fish were more than twice the omega-6 (omega 3/6 ratio = 2.4). The LS lake trout data were combined with earlier LS data collected during the 1980s for eight other species and from five species of Lake Erie fish. All the GL freshwater species were compared with seven other published marine and freshwater fish studies from other global regions. PUFAs were compared based on latitude and marine versus freshwater origin. Differences between marine and freshwater species in omega-3 fatty acid were less at higher latitudes. GL freshwater fish species can be a good source of beneficial fats like marine fish and must be accounted in effective risk communications involving persistent bioaccumulative toxicants in dietary fish.  相似文献

On 27 October 2013, a Rhincodon typus was apparently chased by a group of Caranx ignobilis into nearshore waters near Green Island (Ludao), east of Taiwan. A fisherman brought it back to port where it was kept in a small sea pen until release. The R. typus was 78 cm total length, and was tagged and released on 29 October 2013.  相似文献

Little research has been conducted on effects of iteroparous anadromous fishes on Arctic lakes. We investigated trophic ecology, fish growth, and food web structure in six lakes located in Nunavut, Canada; three lakes contained anadromous Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) whereas three lakes did not contain Arctic charr. All lakes contained forage fishes and lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush; top predator). Isotope ratios (δ13C, δ15N) of fishes and invertebrates did not differ between lakes with and without anadromous Arctic charr; if anadromous Arctic charr deliver marine-derived nutrients and/or organic matter to freshwater lakes, these inputs could not be detected with δ13C and/or δ15N. Lake trout carbon (C):nitrogen (N) and condition were significantly higher in lakes with Arctic charr (C:N = 3.42, K = 1.1) than in lakes without Arctic charr (C:N = 3.17, K = 0.99), however, and ninespine stickleback (Pungitius pungitius) condition was significantly lower in lakes with Arctic charr (K = 0.58) than in lakes without Arctic charr (K = 0.64). Isotope data indicated that pre-smolt and resident Arctic charr may be prey for lake trout and compete with ninespine stickleback. Linear distance metrics applied to isotope data showed that food webs were more compact and isotopically redundant in lakes where Arctic charr were present. Despite this, lake trout populations in lakes with Arctic charr occupied a larger isotope space and showed greater inter-individual isotope differences. Anadromous Arctic charr appear to affect ecology and feeding of sympatric freshwater species, but effects are more subtle than those seen for semelparous anadromous species.  相似文献

Lake Victoria is famous for its in evolutionary terms young but species‐rich assemblage of cichlid fishes. This ‘superflock’ also includes additional species from adjacent water systems. Lake Victoria is surrounded by several smaller lakes that are connected to the main water body of Lake Victoria only through swampy areas. Lake Kanyaboli is one such lake, harbouring a much poorer species diversity, mostly comprised of Lake Victoria endemics, some of which are now considered extirpated from the main lake. The focus of this study was on the modern haplochromine component of the cichlid fauna, represented by Lipochromis maxillaris, Astatotilapia nubila, Xystichromis phytophagus and Astatotilapia sp. ‘Bigeye’, as well as a number of morphologically distinct haplochromine specimens that could not be assigned to any of the recognized species. We used five microsatellite markers to distinguish these five taxa. Genetically, L. maxillaris was clearly differentiated from all other taxa, and A. sp. ‘Bigeye’ was moderately differentiated from the remaining three. Astatotilapia nubila, X. phytophagus and the unidentified specimens constituted a partially overlapping cluster. As each of the clusters had several (5–14) private alleles, extremely recent divergence is suggested. As all taxa except for A. spBigeye’ and the unidentified specimens also occur or at least occurred in Lake Victoria, it is likely that they evolved as part of the Lake Victoria superflock, while A. spBigeye’ and the unidentified specimens may have currently evolved in situ. The observation of slightly distinct albeit overlapping body shapes and the extremely close genetic relationship between three of the five taxa are fully compatible and in support of the hybrid swarm theory of adaptive radiation.  相似文献

Encrustation and element content of six charophyte species from two hard‐water lakes were investigated monthly for a period of 1 year. Seasonal patterns were analyzed for the interaction of water chemistry. Encrustation followed a seasonal pattern for Chara contraria, Chara subspinosa, and Nitellopsis obtusa in Lake Krüselin and for Chara globularis and Chara tomentosa in Lake Lützlow. However, no seasonality in the precipitated CaCO3 was observed for C. subspinosa in Lake Lützlow and for C. tomentosa in Lake Krüselin, indicating a lake‐specific dependency. Species‐specific encrustation was found. Chara contraria and N. obtusa encrusted the most in June and August, whereas C. subspinosa and Nitella flexilis/opaca exhibited lowest encrustation in March and April. The precipitated CaCO3 of charophytes correlated negatively to the concentration of total inorganic carbon in both lakes. Element content of plant dry weight was species‐specific for Ca and K, and lake‐specific for Mg. No specific pattern was found for the TP and Fe contents. The results showed seasonal, species, and lake‐specific influences on the encrustation of charophytes.  相似文献

Increasing degradation of the water quality, caused by overuse and salinization, leads to considerable changes of the phytoplankton composition in Kenyan Rift Valley lakes. Exemplarily, the phytoplankton communities and biomasses of deteriorating freshwater Lake Naivasha and salinizing Lake Oloidien were studied between 2001 and 2005, accompanied by physico-chemical measurements (pH, total phosphorus and nitrogen, alkalinity, conductivity). Over the last three decades, the ecology of these two water basins has been subjected to dramatic changes, caused by excessive use of water and catchment area by man. In L. Naivasha a shift in the dominance of coccoid cyanobacteria towards dominance of Chlorophyceae (Botryococcus terribilis) was observed. Lake Oloidien exhibited a shift in the dominance of coccoid Chlorophyceae towards dominance of cyanobacteria (Arthrospira fusiformis, Anabaenopsis elenkinii). Phytoplankton findings and chemical data demonstrate that L. Naivasha has developed towards a eutrophic freshwater lake while L. Oloidien has progressed towards a hypereutrophic alkaline-saline lake. The Kosi coastal lake system, a chain of four interconnected basins, is located in the subtropical north-eastern corner of South Africa. Little information is available on zooplankton of the system and the main aim of this study is to report on zooplankton samples collected during 2002 and 2003. The set of samples consists of seasonal, subsurface mesozooplankton samples that were collected during nighttime in each of the lakes. A well-developed salinity gradient was evident along the interconnected lakes in the subsurface water during all seasons, ranging from freshwater in the upper lake Amanzamnyama to a maximum of 22 recorded in Lake Makhawulani. The zooplankton community structures of the lakes reflected the salinity gradient of the system, with some coastal marine taxa recorded in the lakes closer to the mouth and only freshwater taxa recorded in Lake Amanzamnyama. Mesozooplankton diversity and abundance were relatively low compared to other estuarine systems along the eastern coast of South Africa. The dominant taxa were calanoid copepods Acartiella natalensis and Pseudodiaptomus stuhlmanni and the mysid Mesopodopsis africana in the lower lakes, whereas cyclopoids Mesocyclops sp. and Thermocyclops sp. dominated the freshwater lake Amanzamnyama.  相似文献
