This study investigated growth, condition and development of American eels Anguilla rostrata that were introduced into a European river to estimate their competitive potential in a non‐native habitat. Results demonstrate that A. rostrata develops normally in European waters and successfully competes with the native European eel Anguilla anguilla. In addition, A. rostrata appears to be more susceptible to the Asian swimbladder nematode Anguillicola crassus than A. anguilla and could support the further propagation of this parasite. Detected differences in fat content and gonad mass between Anguilla species are assumed to reflect species‐specific adaptations to spawning migration distances. This study indicates that A. rostrata is a potential competitor for the native fauna in European fresh waters and suggests strict import regulations to prevent additional pressure on A. anguilla and a potential further deterioration of its stock situation.  相似文献

The effect of Anguillicola crassus, Pseudodactylogyrus bini and Pseudodactylogyrus anguillae infection on the behaviour of downstream migrating adult European eels Anguilla anguilla as they encountered accelerating water velocity, common at engineered structures where flow is constricted (e.g. weirs and bypass systems), was evaluated in an experimental flume. The probability of reacting to, and rejecting, the velocity gradient was positively related to A. crassus larval, adult and total abundance. High abundance of Pseudodactylogyrus spp. reduced this effect, but A. crassus was the strongest parasitic factor associated with fish behaviour, and abundance was positively related to delay in downstream passage. Delayed downstream migration at hydraulic gradients associated with riverine anthropogenic structures could result in additional energetic expenditure for migrating A. anguilla already challenged by A. crassus infection.  相似文献

The unimpeded downstream movement patterns and migration success of small female and male Anguilla anguilla through a catchment in north‐west Europe were studied using an acoustic hydrophone array along the River Finn and into the Foyle Estuary in Ireland. Twenty silver‐stage A. anguilla (total length, LT, range: 332–520 mm) were trapped 152 km upstream from a coastal marine sea‐lough outlet and internally tagged with acoustic transmitters of which 19 initiated downstream migration. Migration speed was highly influenced by river flow within the freshwater (FW) compartment. Anguilla anguilla activity patterns were correlated with environmental influences; light, tidal direction and lunar phase all influenced the initiation of migration of tagged individuals. Migration speed varied significantly between upstream and lower river compartments. Individuals migrated at a slower speed in transitional water and sea‐lough compartments compared with the FW compartment. While 88·5% survival was recorded during migration through the upper 121 km of the river and estuary, only 26% of A. anguilla which initiated downstream migration were detected at the outermost end of the acoustic array. Telemetry equipment functioned efficiently, including in the sea‐lough, so this suggests high levels of mortality during sea‐lough migration, or less likely, long‐term sea‐lough residence by silver A. anguilla emigrants. In this article, it is shown that available genetic tools for the omnipresent parasite Anguillicoloides crassus in European eels Anguilla anguilla are sensitive to different immigration rates into local A. anguilla stocks for two separated river systems. Relying on four highly polymorphic microsatellite markers, it was inferred that under natural recruitment, nematode samples meet Hardy–Weinberg expectations for a single panmictic population, while genetic signals show signs for a strong Wahlund effect most likely due to very recent population mixing under frequent restocking of young A. anguilla. This was indicated by a low but significant FST value among within‐host populations (infrapopulations) along with high inbreeding indices FIS consistent over all loci. The latter signal is shown to stem from high levels of admixture and the presence of first‐generation migrants, and alternative explanations such as marker‐ and sex‐specific biases in the nematode populations could be dismissed. Moreover, the slightly increased degree of relatedness within infrapopulations in the stocked river system cannot explain the excessive inbreeding values found and are most likely a direct consequence of recent influx of already infected fish harbouring parasites with different genetic signatures. Applying a simulation approach using known variables from the nematode's invasion history, only the artificial introduction of a Wahlund effect leads to a close match between simulated and real data, which is a strong argument for using the parasite as a biological tag for detecting and characterizing fish translocation.  相似文献

Living in groups is usually driven by predation and competition for resources. River dolphins do not have natural predators but inhabit dynamic systems with predictable seasonal shifts. These ecological features may provide some insight into the forces driving group formation and help us to answer questions such as why river dolphins have some of the smallest group sizes of cetaceans, and why group sizes vary with time and place. We analyzed observations of group size for Inia and Sotalia over a 9 yr period. In the Amazon, largest group sizes occurred in main rivers and lakes, particularly during the low water season when resources are concentrated; smaller group sizes occurred in constricted waters (channels, tributaries, and confluences) that receive an influx of blackwaters that are poor in nutrients and sediments. In the Orinoco, the largest group sizes occurred during the transitional water season when the aquatic productivity increases. The largest group size of Inia occurred in the Orinoco location that contains the influx of two highly productive whitewater rivers. Flood pulses govern productivity and major biological factors of these river basins. Any threats to flood pulses will likely have an effect on the functionality of these ecosystems and the species living in them.  相似文献

Data on the distribution in 1986 of the parasitic nematode in the swimbladder of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla L.) in Flanders (Belgium) are reported. In stations where imported eels have been used for restocking, samplings generally show high infection rates thus enhancing the spread of Anguillicola crassus in Flanders.  相似文献

The EU-funded research project WISER (“Water bodies in Europe: Integrative Systems to assess Ecological status and Recovery”) developed new assessment methods required by the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) for lakes, coastal and transitional waters. WISER also addressed the recovery of biotic assemblages from degradation. The results are summarised in five key messages, supported by papers in this special issue and by WISER results published elsewhere: (1) Response to stress differs between organism groups, water types and stressors; a conceptual model is proposed summarising how the individual organism groups respond to different types of degradation in rivers, lakes, transitional and coastal waters. (2) The sources of uncertainty differ between BQEs and water types, leading to methodological suggestions on how to design WFD sampling programmes. (3) Results from about 300 current assessment methods indicate geographical variations in metrics but assessments are comparable at an aggregated level (“ecological status”). (4) Scale and time matter; restoration requires action at (sub)-basin levels and recovery may require decades. (5) Long-term trends require consideration; the effects of both degradation and restoration at the water body or river basin scales is increasingly superimposed by multiple stressors acting at large scales, in particular by climate change.  相似文献

The European eel (Anguilla anguilla) has undergone an unprecedented population decline since the 1980s, with current recruitment levels fluctuating from 3 to 15% of historical levels for the last 20 years. Monitoring of glass eels and elvers as 0?+?recruitment is an essential step in helping to understand the trend in recruitment and to better quantify the current recruitment time series. Two locations within the Shannon estuary on the west coast of Ireland were monitored for glass eel recruitment from January to April in 2017 and 2018. This study used a generalised linear mixed model to examine a range of environmental variables impacting on glass eel abundance in transitional waters. Results found that water temperature and moon phase were the most important variables. Tidal height and cloud cover also influenced the abundance of glass eels but to a lesser extent. This study found that focussing survey efforts on nights around the full moon when water temperatures exceed 5℃ will allow a catch which is representative of the population in an estuary. Glass eel monitoring needs a long-term sampling plan in order to account for annual fluctuations apparent in glass eel recruitment.

Investigations on large canalised rivers, for example the Danube, have shown that transported particulate matter, which is typically inorganic, is predominantly deposited in waters near the river’s main channel. This investigation deals with the lower section of the River Havel (NE Germany), a canalised lowland river with a very flat floodplain. This river is highly polluted by nutrients from urban areas (Berlin) and a long chain of river lakes produces high concentrations of phytoplankton. Due to the high proportion of planktogenic detritus, it was hypothesised that greater quantities of nutrient-rich fine particulate organic matter (FPOM) would be deposited in floodplain waters located further from the main channel than has been reported for large rivers. The total nutrient, P-binding metal (Fe, Al, and Mn), organic and inorganic carbon (TOC, TIC) contents of the upper organic sediment layer (0–4 cm) were analysed in samples collected from 48 floodplain water and river sites. The sediment bulk density, calculated on the basis of dry mass content and loss on ignition, was used to characterise the waters according to the impact of the river current. The results showed that the variability of total phosphorus (TP) was best explained by the variability of total iron (TFe, R2 = 0.52). The floodplain water sediments could clearly be separated into two groups on the basis of the sediment particle size composition, and of the element ratios TOC:TP, TN:TP, primarily TFe:TP. The sediments from impounded river sections and from mouth sections of backwaters (approx. 100–200 m) were characterised by a high proportion particles from the 0.1 to 0.5 mm size fraction and by homogeneous, low TFe:TP, TOC:TP and TN:TP ratios. Sediments from distal sections of backwaters and of oxbow lakes tended to exhibit high element ratios with much higher variability. These results were interpreted as a spatially limited impact of the river on the floodplain water sediments. Contrary to expectation, the phosphorus bound in river seston was predominantly and very homogeneously deposited in the impounded river and mouth sections of backwaters. This implies that the inundation of the floodplain waters during spring floods seems to have no important material impact on the sediments in waters of low hydrological connectivity with the River Havel.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The objective of this paper is to draw attention to a previously unrecognised habitat for Unio crassus Philipsson, 1788 (Bivalvia: Unionidae), namely beaver dam-and-pond complexes. The construction of beaver ponds will allow the colonisation of high energy streams by providing flow refuges during periods of high near-bed shear stress. The absence of freshwater mussels (Unionidae) in mountain streams may result from steep slopes, shear stress during floods, lack of food suspended in the water column (seston), and unfavourable conditions for the settlement and growth of juvenile mussels. Transportation of parasitic larvae on host fish is the main dispersal mechanism for the mussels. A possible constraint on the colonisation of beaver complexes by freshwater mussels is that beaver dams may hinder the upstream movement of their minnow hosts. In the surveyed beaver ponds, the first specimens of U. crassus were found in 2008. Single mussels were also found in subsequent years. It is uncertain whether the occurrence of U. crassus depends on the periodic support of the population from the main river, but the presence of beaver ponds is certain to have given it the opportunity of colonising new areas.  相似文献

Diversion of river waters to adjacent estuaries may occur during wetland restoration, navigation channel development, or storms. We proposed that diversions of nitrogen- and phosphorus-enriched waters from the river to estuarine waters would result in increased phytoplankton biomass and shifts to noxious or harmful algal blooms. We tested this hypothesis by conducting four seasonal microcosm experiments in which Mississippi River water was mixed at different volume ratios with ambient estuarine waters of three lakes in the upper Barataria Basin, Louisiana, USA. These lakes included two brackish lakes that were in the path of diverted Mississippi River water, and a freshwater lake that was not. The results from the 3- to 8-day experiments yielded a predictable increase in phytoplankton biomass related to nutrient additions from Mississippi River water. The subsequent decreases in the dissolved nitrate + nitrite, soluble reactive phosphorus, and silicate concentrations explained 76 to 86% of the increase in chlorophyll a concentrations in the microcosms. Our experiments showed that cyanobacteria can successfully compete with diatoms for N and P resources even under non-limiting Si conditions and that toxic cyanobacteria densities can increase to bloom levels with increased Mississippi River water inputs to ambient waters in the microcosms. Diversions of Mississippi River into adjacent estuarine waters should be considered in relation to expected and, possibly, unexpected changes in phytoplankton communities to the receiving waters and coastal ecosystems.

A large number of small saline lakes are distributed throughout Spain. Four main lake districts occur from sea level to 1000 m.a.s.l. Most lakes are temporary because of the arid conditions in the Spanish endorheic areas. Many lakes are situated in Tertiary depressions in NE. and S. Spain. Lake basins were formed in karstic areas by hydrologic and aeolian erosion. Saline lakes in NE. Spain occupy areas isolated between river basins. The major ions encountered in these lakes are usually sodium-chloride and magnesium-sulphate; sodium carbonate or sodium-sulphate rich waters also occur.The biota of Spanish salt lakes is related to that of a larger biogeographical region which includes the Mediterranean countries. The main types of salt lakes in Spain include: (1) temporarily mineralized but not highly saline lakes, salinity is less than 7 g l-1. Chara canescens, C. aspera, Zanichellia palustris, Daphnia atkinsoni, Mixodiaptomus incrassatus and Arctodiaptomus wierzejskii are the most characteristic organisms. (2) Temporary salt lakes, salinity fluctuates between 7 and 300 g l-1. Chara galioides, Lamprothamnion papulosum, Daphnia mediterranea, Arctodiaptomus salinus and Cletocamptus retrogressus are the most common species. (3) Permanent salt lakes, Ruppia maritima, Najas marina and Artemia salina are the characteristic organisms.  相似文献

A large dataset from 1,077 lakes in Finland, Ireland, Sweden and the United Kingdom was collated to analyse the relationship between nutrient status and occurrence of different taxa, as well as between total phosphorus or chlorophyll and commonly used macroinvertebrate metrics developed for river assessment. We found that most taxa were associated with mesotrophic conditions (sensu OECD). Species associated with oligotrophic status included Baetis rhodani, Gammarus lacustris and plecopteran larvae, a group commonly associated with low nutrient status also in rivers. Species tolerant of eutrophic conditions were the chironomid larvae (Chironomus plumosus and Cryptochironomus defectus); and two species of tubificids (Psammoryctides barbatus and Potamothrix hammoniensis). For a number of taxa the associations of benthic invertebrates with nutrient state reported in the literature were not supported by analysis of the REBECCA data. The analysis indicated a variable response of littoral macroinvertebrates to eutrophication pressure when using common metrics developed for macroinvertebrates in rivers. Several metrics showed significantly different responses in lakes with different alkalinity, justifying the use of alkalinity for typing water bodies. These significant responses suggest that benthic invertebrates may be a useful component for classification of ecological status in lakes. The low amount of variance explained by the regressions (<30%), however, suggests that further harmonisation of sampling methods, as well as statistically more robust assessment tools are needed to increase the comparability of datasets and to improve the precision in the dose–response relationships.  相似文献

The results of a study of alderfly larvae (Sialidae, Megaloptera) from over 400 small lakes and ten large lakes and rivers in Northern Finland, Norway, and Murmansk oblast are presented. The distribution of five species of larvae in relation to the landscape, size of water bodies, hydrological type of water bodies, type of habitats, pH, water color, etc., is considered. Possessing a relatively higher plasticity and tolerance to environmental conditions, Sialis larvae were found more often and made the maximum contribution to the biomass of littoral macroinvertebrate communities in small north taiga and tundra lakes, slow water courses, on soft sediments, in vegetation, in weakly humic waters, and in circumneutral and weakly alkaline waters. High ecological plasticity, including pollution, is found in the larvae of S. morio Klingstedt and S. lutaria L.  相似文献

The timing of catches of anguillid glass eels and their otolith microstructure and microchemistry were studied in southwest Iceland, where the European eel, Anguilla anguilla and American eel, A. rostrata have been thought to live sympatrically, to learn about their early life history and the possible mechanism of the separation between these two species ranges. Catches at the site studied suggest that glass eels may have started upstream migration as the river temperature warmed in late June and early July. The glass eels were mitochondrially identified into two species, A. anguilla and A. rostrata, although the latter were likely hybrids between the two species based on a different study. Otolith analyses showed no sharp increases in otolith increment width or sharp decrease of otolith Sr:Ca ratio in either species, which are the characteristic changes corresponding to the onset of metamorphosis in many anguillid species including A. rostrata collected in North America and A. anguilla in Europe. The mean age at recruitment determined for the glass eels in Iceland were similar between the two species (336.6 ± 41.7 and 319.3 ± 36.0 days for A. anguilla and A. rostrata, respectively), as were their total lengths (range 58.0–78.5 mm and 58.5–73.0 mm). In addition, mean age at metamorphosis (278.0 ± 36.8 and 254.0 ± 47.7 days) and total age (372.3 ± 50.8 and 352.9 ± 42.6 days) were also similar between the two species. However, these ages of A. rostrata in Iceland were older than those in North America, and those of A. anguilla collected in Iceland were roughly intermediate between the rest of Europe and North Africa. These findings support the hypothesis that the timing of metamorphosis is a key factor for determining the place of recruitment of glass eels and maintaining the geographic separation between the two species.  相似文献

Anguillicola crassus was introduced into Dutch eelfarms by infected stocking material originating from inland fisheries. Within farms, suitable intermediate hosts for transmission of the parasite are available and uninfected stock becomes rapidly infected. In farming situations, only very heavy infections with the parasite can cause significant damage to fish, mainly by secondary infections. Treatment of fish infected with A. crassus is possible with L-Levamisole as a bath treatment or mixed with the feed, which results in complete immobilisation of the nematode. Transmission of the infection within farms can be controlled by keeping populations of copepods low. This can be accomplished by avoiding accumulations of organic matter within systems and/or control with chemical means. It can be stated that Anguillicola crassus does not pose the threat to intensive eel culture it once seemed to be.  相似文献

This study is part of an on‐going effort to evaluate and monitor river dolphin populations in South America. It comprises the largest initiative to estimate population size and densities of Inia and Sotalia dolphins using statistically robust and standardized methods. From May 2006 to August 2007, seven visual surveys were conducted in selected large rivers of Bolivia, Colombia, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela in the Amazon and Orinoco river basins. Population sizes of Inia and Sotalia were estimated for different habitats (main river, tributary, lake, island, confluence, and channel). A total of 291 line and 890 strip transects were conducted, covering a distance of 2,704 linear kilometers. We observed 778 Inia geoffrensis, 1,323 Inia boliviensis, and 764 Sotalia fluviatilis. High‐density areas were identified (within 200 m from the river banks, confluences, and lakes) and we propose that these constitute critical habitat for river dolphins. High densities of river dolphins seem to coincide with well‐managed freshwater protected areas and should be considered as hot spots for river dolphins in South America.  相似文献
