Twenty individuals of the largest European freshwater predator, the European catfish Silurus glanis, were tagged with electromyogram (EMG) physiological telemetry sensors. The fish were observed during diel cycles during the spring and summer in the Elbe and Berounka Rivers, Czech Republic. The purpose of this study was to determine whether diel dualism in the activity of S. glanis occurs naturally or is induced by the laboratory environment and by the conditions occurring in aquaculture. The results obtained from the riverine environment tended to show dualism in the use of the light and dark phases of the day because 35% of the individuals varied from a site‐specific common diel activity pattern. The EMG values increased in accordance with the mass (M) of the fish. To eliminate the influence of M on individual energy consumption, the EMG records were analysed in terms of the EMG:M ratios. High individual variability was found in these ratios. The diel activity pattern of the individuals with relatively high energy consumption differed from the common diel activity pattern. In contrast, the fish that adopted the common diel activity pattern displayed relatively low energy consumption. The results of this study indicated that dualism and energy consumption are related. The EMG values also varied with the values of the environmental variables. Increasing temperature was associated with high EMG values, whereas the EMG values decreased with increasing flow.  相似文献

The efficacy and sub‐lethal consequences of single and double tagging European catfish Silurus glanis with Petersen disc and passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags were examined in short (laboratory) and longer‐term (field) experiments. Tag retention in the laboratory was 100%, with normal behaviour (i.e. feeding) in all fish returning within 36 h. In the field, 65 of 120 tagged S. glanis were recaptured from five small study ponds, with 85% retaining their PIT tags, though recapture rates and tagging efficacy were highly variable amongst locations. This is consistent with literature for other fishes, suggesting that tagging efficiency is variable across species and largely context dependent (fish length, tagging location, habitat).  相似文献

Dualism in activity has been described in many fish species, including larger individuals of European catfish (Silurus glanis), which are able to switch their activities from nocturnal to diurnal in winter and spring. During the multi‐year telemetry study, seasonal changes in diel activity of 45 juvenile European catfish were investigated. These juveniles exhibited no dualism in movement and were strictly nocturnal and crepuscular with no period of diurnal activity. During winter, the same juvenile European catfish were completely inactive throughout the 24‐hr cycle. Also investigated was the impact of temperature, dissolved oxygen levels and water clarity on fish movement, relocation of resting places and home range size. The only significant correlations were that relocation and home range size increased with rising water temperatures.  相似文献

European catfish (Silurus glanis) were tested for their susceptibility to the bacterium Edwardsiella ictaluri. The LD50 of E. ictaluri when injected into European catfish was 5.4 × 106 compared to 7.1 times; 104 for channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus). E. ictaluri was isolated from dead and moribund European catfish and the bacterium was also detected in kidney smears by an indirect fluorescent antibody (FA) technique. The bacterium was not isolated or detected by FA from surviving fish 15 days after injection. No clinical signs of E. ictaluri infection were noted in European catfish, but these were prevalent in the channel catfish. These experiments indicate that under experimental conditions European catfish are not as susceptible to E. ictaluri as channel catfish.  相似文献

The European catfish Silurus glanis is an important fish species in both commercial and recreational fisheries. Catfish is a spreading species that was reported to potentially benefit from increasing temperatures. The goal of this study was to estimate long‐term changes in harvest rates of catfish in Central Europe. This study used individual mandatory angling logbooks collected by the Czech Fishing Union in the Czech Republic (Central Europe) over the course of years 1986–2017 (32 years) to assess harvest rates of catfish. This study discovered that harvest of catfish has been increasing over time. Moreover, rivers that previously showed zero harvested catfish are beginning to display higher harvest rates of catfish. Increasing average air temperature and angling effort in the study area have positively affected harvest rates of catfish. The increased harvest of catfish could not be reliably explained by intensive fish stocking. In conclusion, while other studies show that many fish species are negatively affected by human activities and therefore show decreased harvest rates, catfish angling seems to benefit from anthropogenic changes.  相似文献

The karyotype of European catfish (Silurus glanis L.) was analyzed sequentially by means of silver staining and the chromomycin A3 (CMA3)/distamycin A (DA)/DAPI fluorescence technique and by C-banding, respectively. The nucleolus organizer regions (NORs) were localized on the submetacentric pair No. 14. Brilliant CMA3 fluorescent heterochromatin blocks corresponded to the NORs visualized by silver staining. No DA/DAPI-bright positive fluorescent patterns were detected while C-banding led to the detection of specific banding patterns on several chromosome pairs.—Using these banding data, the karyotype of S. glanis was redescribed.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to investigate the digestibility of pumpkin seed cake (PSC) for the rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum, 1792), and effects on performance and product quality traits of four different fish species when PSC partially replaced fishmeal in extruded diets. A digestibility trial was carried out to determine apparent digestibility coefficients (ADC) for crude protein (CP), ether extract (EE) and gross energy (GE) of PSC fed to rainbow trout. In subsequent growth trials, effects on performance and morphological traits and fillet colour values of four different fish species [rainbow trout; brook trout, Salvelinus fontinalis (Mitchill, 1814); African sharptooth catfish, Clarias gariepinus (Burchell, 1822); and wels catfish, Silurus glanis (Linnaeus, 1758)] were evaluated when 60% of fishmeal protein of a reference diet was replaced by PSC protein (based on digestible CP). Nutrient ADC of PSC were high (CP: 89%, EE: 88% and GE: 84%). No significant effects on growth and only minor effects on fillet colour were detected in the trials. However, replacing fishmeal with PSC at the chosen level affected morphological traits and feed conversion in all four species to different extents. Replacement effects of PSC should be tested at lower levels of inclusion before conclusions are drawn on its suitability in fish diets.  相似文献

In this study, the results of conventional stomach‐content analysis are compared with the recent DNA metabarcoding approach on faeces to identify fish species consumed by non‐native European catfish Silurus glanis in the Garonne River (south‐western France), with a special emphasis on anadromous prey. Fourteen prey species were identified in the stomach contents or faeces, including four anadromous fish species. Despite higher intestine than stomach emptiness, more species were identified through faecal analysis (11 of 14) than through stomach‐content analysis (five of 14) suggesting that DNA metabarcoding on faeces is an efficient, non‐intrusive technique to study the diet of predatory fishes.  相似文献

The perception of danger represents an essential ability of prey for gaining an informational advantage over their natural enemies. Especially in complex environments or at night, animals strongly rely on chemoreception to avoid predators. The ability to recognize danger by chemical cues and subsequent adaptive responses to predation threats should generally increase prey survival. Recent findings suggest that European catfish (Silurus glanis) introduction induce changes in fish community and we tested whether the direction of change can be attributed to differences in chemical cue perception. We tested behavioral response to chemical cues using three species of freshwater fish common in European water: rudd (Scardinius erythrophthalmus), roach (Rutilus rutilus), and perch (Perca fluviatilis). Further, we conducted a prey selectivity experiment to evaluate the prey preferences of the European catfish. Roach exhibited the strongest reaction to chemical cues, rudd decreased use of refuge and perch did not alter any behavior in the experiment. These findings suggest that chemical cue perception might be behind community data change and we encourage collecting more community data of tested prey species before and after European catfish introduction to test the hypothesis. We conclude that used prey species can be used as a model species to verify whether chemical cue perception enhances prey survival.  相似文献

We wished to determine protein and lipid content in pelleted raw fish food, necessary for optimal growth of European catfish (Silurus glanis). Experiments were set up in 20 cages, each holding 30 young catfish. Fishes in each cage received a different food combination over a 98‐day period at favourable physical and chemical water conditions. Food protein content varied between 37.5 and 45%, while lipid content, added in the form of soybean oil, varied between 3 and 11%. The oil contained an adequate ω‐fatty acids concentration, necessary for fish growth. The main growth indicators determined at the end of experiment were total body gain, specific growth rate and feed conversion ratio. There was a high statistical difference among the experimental groups receiving variable food combinations for each growth parameter (P < 0.001). Both protein and lipid food content affected growth parameters, but in a different manner. Further analysis – percentage of change depending on lipid to protein ratio and bivariate surface analysis – allowed us to recognize the most economical combination: 39.5% protein + 9% lipid content. The addition of 9% soybean oil to the fish food reduces the necessary protein concentration by 5.5%, with resulting identical catfish growth effects.  相似文献

During the last decades, non-native predatory fish species have been largely introduced in European lakes and rivers, calling for detailed information on the trophic ecology of co-existing native and non-native predators. The present study describes the trophic ecology of the introduced pikeperch (Sander lucioperca) in two southwestern French rivers, using stable isotope analysis. Pikeperch could be categorized as a top-predator, and had a significantly higher trophic position (TP, mean±SE=4.2±0.1) compared to other predatory fish such as the native pike (Esox lucius, TP=3.7±0.1) and the introduced European catfish (Silurus glanis, TP=3.8±0.1). Most studies of resource use in freshwaters consider predatory fish as ecologically equivalent; however, this study showed that the pikeperch occupied a higher trophic niche compared to other predatory species in the Lot and Tarn rivers (Garonne River basin). This apparent specialization may thus have consequences upon interspecific relationships within the predatory guild and upon the functional organization of biological communities. 1. Temperate regions with fish communities dominated by cold‐water species (physiological optima <20 °C) are vulnerable to the effects of warming temperatures caused by climate change, including displacement by non‐native cool‐water (physiological optima 20–28 °C) and warm‐water fishes (physiological optima >28 °C) that are able to establish and invade as the thermal constraints on the expression of their life history traits diminish. 2. England and Wales is a temperate region into which at least 38 freshwater fishes have been introduced, although 14 of these are no longer present. Of the remaining 24 species, some have persisted but failed to establish, some have established populations without becoming invasive and some have become invasive. The aim of the study was to predict the responses of these 24 non‐native fishes to the warming temperatures of England and Wales predicted under climate change in 2050. 3. The predictive use of climate‐matching models and an air and water temperature regression model suggested that there are six non‐native fishes currently persistent but not established in England and Wales whose establishment and subsequent invasion would benefit substantially from the predicted warming temperatures. These included the common carp Cyprinus carpio and European catfish Silurus glanis, fishes that also exert a relatively high propagule pressure through stocking to support angling and whose spatial distribution is currently increasing significantly, including in open systems. 4. The potential ecological impacts of the combined effects of warming temperatures, current spatial distribution and propagule pressure on the establishment and invasion of C. carpio and Sglanis were assessed. The ecological consequences of Ccarpio invasion were assessed as potentially severe in England and Wales, with impacts likely to relate to habitat destruction, macrophyte loss and increased water turbidity. However, evidence of ecological impacts of Sglanis elsewhere in their introduced range was less clear and so their potential impacts in England and Wales remain uncertain.  相似文献

The influence of temperature on growth, feed conversion, and protein and gross energy utilization was assessed in two experiments using the European catfish, Silurus glanis L. Animals of 55 g and 24 g were used in trials lasting 6 and 7 weeks, respectively. The optimum temperature for growth was within the range of 25 to 28°C, with the best results obtained at 27°C. Using à feed of low protein content (30.3%), a feed conversion of 1.67 was achieved at à specific growth rate of 1.78% of body weight/day.  相似文献

Summary Using immunohistochemistry, vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) was visualized in taste bud cells of the carp, Cyprinus carpio, and the European catfish, Silurus glanis, by means of light and electron microscopy. Intracellular membrane systems, presumably smooth endoplasmic reticulum, of light (sensory) cells, but not of dark (supporting) cells and basal cells, were densely labelled with antibody. In the frog (four species: Rana temporaria, R. ridibunda, R. arvalis, R. pipiens), taste bud cells did not label. However, the dense basal nerve fibre plexus, some subepithelial ganglionic cells, but no ascending intragemmal fibres, were immunoreactive. In fish, the results support evidence that VIP is involved in the modulation of taste transduction at the level of receptor cells. In the frog, an indirect, possibly vasodilatatory effect on taste perception may be considered.  相似文献

This paper reports the results of a diet analysis from the digestive tracts of 203 great cormorants shot at the Donji Miholjac fishponds in eastern Croatia, in the period 2000–2002. Eight fish species were determined. The dominant species was common carp (Cyprinus carpio) with a relative frequency of 73.4%, followed by grass carp (Ctenopharingodon idella) (11.6%), bighead carp (Aristichthys nobilis) (7.2%), pikeperch (Sander lucioperca) (2.0%), wels catfish (Silurus glanis) (1.7%), pike (Esox lucius) (1.5%), topmouth gudgeon (Pseudorasbora parva) (1.5%) and Prussian carp (Carassius auratus gibelio) (1.1%). The diet spectrum of the great cormorants from the Donji Miholjac fishponds was in accordance with the structure of the fish population in the fishponds. The average stomach weight per bird was 244 g. When birds shot with an empty stomach were excluded, the average stomach weight increased to 286 g. The length of consumed fish ranged from 40–335 mm, with 47% of the fish belonging to the length category 100–149 mm. The study revealed no significant relationship between the weight of the consumed fish and the body weight of male and female cormorants.  相似文献

Identifying the factors influencing the settlement of European eel (Anguilla anguilla) juveniles in continental habitats is crucial to designing effective management and conservation measures for this endangered species. A long-term data series (1993–2008) of European eel and European catfish (Silurus glanis) abundance in a freshwater canal of the Camargue water system (southern France), along with parallel data on water salinity and glass eel abundance in the adjacent Vaccarès lagoon, was analysed to identify the possible causes of decline in eel abundance observed in the canal during the last two decades. A model including glass eel recruitment and catfish abundance as covariates explained 78% of the observed variation in eel settlement success. Results suggest that (1) salinity does not play a significant role in determining the fraction of eels moving from the brackish lagoon to the canal; (2) density dependence affects settlement success, possibly through a reduction of juvenile survival in the adjacent lagoon; and (3) catfish abundance is negatively correlated with eel settlement. We discuss this latter point in terms of possible predation of catfish upon eels and/or inter-specific competition between the two species.  相似文献

The European catfish, Silurus glanis, is native to eastern Europe and western Asia and is among the largest freshwater fish in the world. Despite its increasing economic importance and its frequent introductions, the ecology and life-history of this species is poorly known due to the difficulty of sampling such a large species in large rivers and standing waters. Our study provides the first data on age and growth of this species in Turkish waters, where it is native. We report the length-weight relationships and age and size structure of this population, which were significantly different between females and males. A marginal increment analysis indicated that annulus formation occurred between May and June. The estimates of three growth functions (von Bertalanffy, logistic and Gompertz) are reported, with the von Bertalanffy growth providing a better fit and more realistic parameter estimates. Growth rates were significantly higher in males than in females and were overall higher compared to other native populations but similar to introduced populations of similar latitude.  相似文献

In an 18‐week treatment, the effect of linolenic acid on European catfish (Silurus glanis L.) growth indicators was investigated as to weight gain, feeding coefficient (FCR value), specific growth rate (SGR value), protein efficiency ratio (PER value), productive protein value (PPV) and survival rate. Concurrently, the fishmeat chemical composition was also investigated. The experiment was organized into four groups, each divided into three subgroups. Stocked in each of 12 cages were 30 × 1‐year‐old catfish, with individual weights ranging from 148.5 to 151.5 g/ind. All fish were given standard feed for European catfish which contained 45% protein. The first batch, control group (C), received no additional linolenic acid. Linolenic acid was added to the feed of the second (E1), third (E2) and fourth group (E3), at 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5%, respectively. Growth indicator improvement was best in the E2 group fed the 1% linolenic acid, whereby the fish weight gain was 12.6% higher and the feeding coefficient 12.9% lower, while SGR, PER and PPV values were 6.1, 12.0 and 15.8% better than the control group. Growth indicators were also significantly (P < 0.01) improved in the three groups receiving additional linolenic acid in comparison to the control group. Moreover, this addition positively affected fishmeat quality by increasing meat protein content from 18.04% (C) to 18.79% (E3). The total unsaturated fatty acid content also increased from 65.07% (C) to 69.82% (E3), and the total saturated fatty acid content decreased from 31.36% (C) to 26.50% (E3); consequently, the ratio of unsaturated to saturated fatty acids increased from 2.07% (C) to 2.63% (E3). It can be concluded that the addition of 1% linolenic acid to standard catfish feed has beneficial effects on fish growth indicators and meat quality.  相似文献

The physical factor inducing spawning of the Biwa catfish, Silurus biwaensis (Siluriformes: Siluridae), an endemic species of Lake Biwa, was investigated on the basis of field observations on 150 nights at the spawning site, the rocky shore of the Seta River, the lake's outlet, and environmental data from April to July in 1989–1994. The catfish gathered at the spawning site when the water level of the river rapidly rose and the rocky shoal became submerged, within a wide range of water temperature (15.0°–30.0°C); their spawning was induced in relation to increases in the submerged portion of the rocky shoal. This observation suggests that water level control operations in Lake Biwa might critically affect the spawning of this and other fish species.
