The life history of the long‐snouted seahorse Hippocampus guttulatus was characterized using mark‐recapture data collected within a focal study site and catch data from 53 additional sites in the Ria Formosa coastal lagoon, southern Portugal. Population structure in benthic habitats was characterized by high local densities (0·3–1·5 m?2), equal sex ratios and few juveniles <70 mm. Adult H. guttulatus maintained small (19·9 ± 12·4 m2), strongly overlapping home ranges during multiple reproductive seasons. Recruited (benthic) juveniles exhibited significantly lower site fidelity than adults. A Ford‐Walford plot of standard length (LS) at time t against LS measured during the previous year from tagged juveniles and adults led to estimates of the von Bertalanffy parameters K = 0·571 and L = 197·6 mm. The growth rate of planktonic juveniles (inferred from previous studies), was greater than predicted by the von Bertalanffy model, providing evidence of an ontogenetic shift in growth trajectory. The instantaneous rate of natural mortality, M, ranged from 1·13 to 1·22 year?1(annual survival rate = 29·4–32·2%). Sexes did not differ in movement, growth or survival patterns. On average, H. guttulatus measured 12·2 ± 0·8 mm at birth. Planktonic juveniles recruited to vegetated habitat at 96·0 ± 8·0 mm (0·25 years), had mature brood pouches (males only) at 109·4 mm (0·49 years), began maintaining home ranges and reproducing at 125–129 mm (0·85–0·94 years), and lived for 4·3–5·5 years. Early age at maturity, rapid growth rates, and short generation times suggested that H. guttulatus may recover rapidly when direct (e.g. exploitation) and indirect (e.g. by‐catch and habitat damage) effects of disturbance cease, but may be vulnerable to extended periods of poor recruitment.  相似文献

A dorsal‐fin photo‐identification technique paired with a non‐invasive parallel laser photogrammetry technique was used to non‐invasively identify individual Sphyrna mokarran over time. Based on the data collected over a duration of 59 days, 16 different S. mokarran (mean ± s.d . pre‐caudal length: 220·82 ± 13·66 cm; mean ± s.d . cephalofoil width: 71·38 ± 7·94 cm) were identified using dorsal‐fin photo‐identification, with a mean ± s.d . shark re‐sighting frequency of 4·05 ± 3·06 at‐sea days. The results illustrate a high S. mokarran sighting rate and therefore, the utilization of parallel laser photogrammetry and dorsal‐fin photo‐identification may be a plausible multi‐year approach to aid in non‐invasively determining the growth rate and inter‐annual site fidelity of these animals.  相似文献

Comparisons of three sets of surveys in the Ria Formosa Lagoon, Portugal, over a 13 year period (2001–2002, 2008–2009 and 2010–2013) revealed significant population fluctuations in at least one of the two seahorse (Hippocampinae) species living there, and that those fluctuations were potentially associated with habitat changes in the lagoon. After a significant decline between the first two survey periods (2001–2002 v. 2008–2009), long‐snouted seahorse Hippocampus guttulatus populations increased significantly between 2008–2009 surveys and new 2010–2013 surveys. There were no significant differences in H. guttulatus populations between the 2001–2002 and 2010–2013 surveys. In contrast, there were no significant differences in short‐snouted seahorse Hippocampus hippocampus densities among the 16 sites surveyed throughout the three sampling periods, although the ability to detect any change was hampered by the low densities of this species in all time periods. Fluctuations in H. guttulatus densities were positively correlated with the percentage of holdfast coverage, but with none of the other environmental variables tested. These results highlight the importance of holdfast availability in maintaining stable seahorse populations. While population fluctuations are certainly more promising than a consistent downward decline, such extreme fluctuations observed for seahorses in the Ria Formosa Lagoon could still leave these two species vulnerable to any additional stressors, particularly during low density periods.  相似文献

Aims: S‐adenosyl‐l ‐methionine (SAM) is an important biochemical molecule with great potential in the pharmacological and chemotherapeutic fields. In this study, our aims were to enhance SAM production in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Methods and Results: Through spaceflight culture, a SAM‐accumulating strain, S. cerevisiae H5M147, was isolated and found to produce 86·89% more SAM than its ground control strain H5. Amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) analysis demonstrated that there were genetic variations between strain H5M147 and its ground control. Through recombinant DNA technology, the heterologous gene encoding methionine adenosyltransferase was integrated into the genome of strain H5M147. The recombinant strain H5MR83 was selected because its SAM production was increased by 42·98% when compared to strain H5M147. Furthermore, cultivation conditions were optimized using the one‐factor‐at‐a‐time and Taguchi methods. Under optimal conditions, strain H5MR83 yielded 7·76 g l?1 of SAM in shake flask, an increase of 536·07% when compared to the strain H5. Furthermore, 9·64 g l?1 of SAM was produced in fermenter cultivation. Conclusions: A new SAM‐accumulating strain, S. cerevisiae H5MR83, was obtained through spaceflight culture and genetic modification. Under optimal conditions, SAM production was increased to a relative high level in our study. Significance and Impact of the Study: Through comprehensive application of multiple methods including spaceflight culture, genetic modification and optimizing cultivation, the yield of SAM could be increased by 6·4 times compared to that in the control strain H5. The obtained S. cerevisiae H5MR83 produced 7·76 g l?1 of SAM in the flask cultures, a significant improvement on previously reported results. The SAM production period with S. cerevisiae H5MR83 was 84 h, which is shorter than previously reported results. Saccharomyces cerevisiae H5MR83 has considerable potential for use in industrial applications.  相似文献

Recent findings reported a significant decrease in abundance of two seahorse species (Hippocampus guttulatus and H. hippocampus) in the Ria Formosa lagoon (South Portugal) and no direct causes have been, so far, clearly identified. This study aimed to describe fluctuations in the local seahorse populations through monthly surveys over a course of a year, in order to identify some of the potential drivers behind the seasonal fluctuations. A total of six sites were chosen based on their habitat characteristics. The highest H. guttulatus abundances were recorded at sites with higher holdfast availability and depth ranging from 3 to 6 m, while H. hippocampus were observed at highest numbers in sites with lower holdfast availability and patchy distribution. In most sites, seahorse density decreased during the summer months (from May to August) and increased from August to December. Holdfast use changed across the surveyed sites, according to the respective habitat characteristics. This study identified environmental variables that influenced the abundance of seahorse population, i.e., holdfast availability, depth and temperature in the Ria Formosa lagoon, underlining the importance of monitoring populations over a course of no less than a year in order to avoid bias due to seasonal fluctuations. Identifying critical habitats will provide valuable information for local authorities in order to implement protective measures towards seahorse conservation.  相似文献

Aim: To enhance the information pertaining to the epidemiology of a collection of 378 Listeria spp. isolates obtained from several food‐processing plants in Ireland over a 3‐ year period (2004–2007). Methods and results: The collection was characterized by pulsed‐field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). The most prevalent pulse‐type was PFGE profile I (n = 14·5%) that consisted mainly of environmental Listeria spp. samples. Serotyping of 145 Listeria monocytogenes isolates was performed. The most common serovar was 1/2a and comprised 57·4% (n = 77) of the L. monocytogenes collection. The other serovars were as follows: 4b (14·1%, n = 19), 1/2b (9·7%, n = 13), 4c (4·4%, n = 6) and 1/2c (6·7%, n = 9), respectively. Eleven isolates were identified as non‐Listeria spp., the remaining ten L. monocytogenes isolates were nontypeable. The antimicrobial susceptibility testing revealed the antibiotic that isolates displayed the most resistance to was gentamicin (5%) followed by sulfamethoxazole‐trimethoprim (2%), tetracycline and ciprofloxacin (1·5%). Conclusions: The subtyping has indicated the diversity of the Listeria spp. The presence of serotype 1/2a, 1/2b and 4b in both raw and cooked ready‐to‐eat food products is a public health concern, as these serotypes are frequently associated with foodborne outbreaks and sporadic cases of human listeriosis. In addition, the emergence of antimicrobial‐resistant L. monocytogenes isolates could have serious therapeutic consequences. Significance and Impact of Study: The molecular subtyping and the further characterization of these isolates may be valuable particularly in the context of a suspected common source outbreak in the future.  相似文献

Aims

To confirm the stress‐relieving effects of heat‐inactivated, enteric‐colonizing Lactobacillus gasseri CP2305 (paraprobiotic CP2305) in medical students taking a cadaver dissection course.

Methods and Results

Healthy students (21 males and 11 females) took paraprobiotic CP2305 daily for 5 weeks during a cadaver dissection course. The General Health Questionnaire and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index were employed to assess stress‐related somatic symptoms and sleep quality respectively. The aggravation of stress‐associated somatic symptoms was observed in female students (P = 0·029). Sleep quality was improved in the paraprobiotic CP2305 group (= 0·038), particularly in men (= 0·004). Among men, paraprobiotic CP2305 shortened sleep latency (= 0·035) and increased sleep duration (= 0·048). Diarrhoea‐like symptoms were also effectively controlled with CP2305 (= 0·005) in men. Thus, we observed sex‐related differences in the effects of paraprobiotic CP2305. In addition, CP2305 affected the growth of faecal Bacteroides vulgatus and Dorea longicatena, which are involved in intestinal inflammation.

Conclusions

CP2305 is a potential paraprobiotic that regulates stress responses, and its beneficial effects may depend on specific cell component(s).

Ultrasonic telemetry was used to compare post‐release survival and movements of Atlantic sharpnose sharks Rhizoprionodon terraenovae in a coastal area of the north‐east Gulf of Mexico. Ten fish were caught with standardized hook‐and‐line gear during June to October 1999. Atlantic sharpnose sharks were continuously tracked after release for periods of 0·75 to 5·90 h and their positions recorded at a median interval of 9 min. Individual rate of movement was the mean of all distance and time measurements for each fish. Mean ± s.e . individual rate of movement was 0·45 ± 0·06 total lengths per second (LT s?1) and ranged from 0·28 to 0·92 LT s?1 over all fish. Movement patterns did not differ between jaw and internally hooked Atlantic sharpnose sharks. Individual rate of movement was inversely correlated with bottom water temperature at capture (r2 = 0·52, P ≤ 0·05). No consistent direction in movement was detected for Atlantic sharpnose sharks after release, except that they avoided movement towards shallower areas. Capture‐release survival was high (90%), with only one fish not surviving, i.e. this particular fish stopped movement for a period of 10 min. Total rate of movement was total distance over total time (m min?1) for each Atlantic sharpnose shark. Mean total rate of movement was significantly higher immediately after release at 21·5 m min?1 over the first 1·5 h of tracking, then decreased to 11·2 m min?1 over 1·5–6 h, and 7·7 m min?1 over 3–6 h (P ≤ 0·002), which suggested initial post‐release stress but quick recovery from capture. Thus, high survival (90%) and quick recovery indicate that the practice of catch‐and‐release would be a viable method to reduce capture mortality for R. terraenovae.  相似文献

Increase in 4‐hydroxy‐2‐nonenal (4HNE) due to oxidative stress has been observed in a variety of cardiac diseases such as diabetic cardiomyopathy. 4HNE exerts a damaging effect in the myocardium by interfering with subcellular organelles like mitochondria by forming adducts. Therefore, we hypothesized that increased 4HNE adduct formation in the heart results in proteasome inactivation in isoproterenol (ISO)‐infused type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM) rats. Eight‐week‐old male Sprague Dawley rats were injected with streptozotocin (STZ, 65 mg kg?1). The rats were infused with ISO (5 mg kg?1) for 2 weeks by mini pumps, after 8 weeks of STZ injection. We studied normal control (n = 8) and DM + ISO (n = 10) groups. Cardiac performance was assessed by echocardiography and Millar catheter at the end of the protocol at 20 weeks. Initially, we found an increase in 4HNE adducts in the hearts of the DM + ISO group. There was also a decrease in myocardial proteasomal peptidase (chymotrypsin and trypsin‐like) activity. Increases in cardiomyocyte area (446 ± 32·7 vs 221 ± 10·83) (µm2), per cent area of cardiac fibrosis (7·4 ± 0·7 vs 2·7 ± 0·5) and cardiac dysfunction were also found in DM + ISO (P < 0·05) relative to controls. We also found increased 4HNE adduct formation on proteasomal subunits. Furthermore, reduced aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 activity was observed in the myocardium of the DM + ISO group. Treatment with 4HNE (100 μM) for 4 h on cultured H9c2 cardiomyocytes attenuated proteasome activity. Therefore, we conclude that the 4HNE‐induced decrease in proteasome activity may be involved in the cardiac pathology in STZ‐injected rats infused with ISO. Aims: In this study, 105 Listeria monocytogenes strains isolated from humans, foods and environmental samples were characterized using several typing methods. Moreover, serotyping procedure was evaluated, and a cost‐effective methodological approach based on preliminary PCRs screening was proposed. Methods and Results: The isolates were analysed by conventional serotyping, multiplex‐PCRs for serogroup and lineage identification and PCR–RFLP of inlA gene to identify potentially noninvasive L. monocytogenes. Among the strains, only the serotypes 1/2a, 1/2c, 1/2b, 4b and 3a were identified. The isolates were classified into serogroups I (58·10%), II (22·85%), III (12·38%) and IV (6·67%). Among clinical strains, lineage I was more represented (68·75%) than lineage II; whereas, lineage II was more associated with food (90·24%) and environmental (85·72%) isolates. Most of food (89·02%) and environmental (85·71%) isolates were classified into truncated InlA profiles, whereas the 93·75% of clinical strains were associated with a complete form of the protein. Conclusion: Molecular techniques were sensitive and specific for classifying strains into serogroup and lineage and in agreement with the serotyping. Moreover, a preliminary PCRs‐based screening was proposed to select only the necessary antisera by a flow chart; this methodological approach allows cost saving up to 42%. Our results further suggest the role of InlA protein in human listeriosis, particularly in immunocompetent individuals, and a correlation between truncated protein and serotype. Significance and Impact of the Study: This study further validates molecular methods for L. monocytogenes analysis and proposed a new cost‐effective approach for serotyping. It could help to improve a national surveillance network for L. monocytogenes infections in Italy.  相似文献

Aims: The study was performed to evaluate the safety of whole and RTE vegetables and to investigate the effectiveness of different preventive strategies for the quality assurance of RTE vegetables collected from three Italian production systems. Producer 1, applied a strict system in compliance with GAP‐ GMP – HACCP, Producer 2 used chlorine disinfection at a second washing step, and Producer 3 using a physical microbial stabilization. Methods: During the period 2005–2007, a total of 964 samples including whole vegetables and RTE salads, collected from three different producers in central Italy, were analysed to quantify the aerobic mesophilic count (AMC) and Escherichia coli, and for the presence of Salmonella spp, Listeria monocytogenes, E. coli O157:H7, hepatitis A virus and Norovirus (NoV). Results: None of the whole vegetable samples were positive for L. monocytogenes, E. coli O157:H7, HAV and NoV; however, a low prevalence of Salmonella was found. No pathogens were detected with cultural methods in any of the RTE vegetables analysed, only two RTE samples were positive for L. monocytogenes with PCR, but were not confirmed by the cultural method. The median values of AMC in RTE vegetables measured 24 h after packaging were statistically different among the 3 producers (5·4 × 106, 1·5 × 107 and 3·7 × 107 CFU g?1, respectively; P = 0·011). The lowest level was detected in Producer 1. Conclusion: The products that were processed applying rigorously GAP, GMP and HACCP showed a better microbiological quality than those processed with chemical or physical stabilization. Study Significance and Impact: The results of the study evidenced the efficacy of GAP, GMP and HACCP in improving microbiological quality of whole and RTE vegetables.  相似文献

The presence of anatoxin‐a (ANA) in Mediterranean region freshwaters has been reported only recently, and this work presents the first survey for ANA on a national scale in such waters. Fourteen reservoirs were sampled over a distance of 550 km from northeast to southwest Spain. Genera of cyanobacteria with ANA‐producing members in other countries were present in all of the Spanish reservoirs, but this toxin was detected in only one reservoir. The maximum ANA concentration detected was 0.31 μg · L?1, and the most probable producer was Anabaena flos‐aquae (Lyngb.) Bréb. ex Bornet et Flahault. These findings suggest that in spite of the abundant cyanobacterial populations, ANA may be of lower occurrence in the Spanish reservoirs investigated than in other European freshwaters, and different strains of potential ANA producers occur in different ecoregions.  相似文献

Chimaera carophila (n = 45) and Hydrolagus homonycteris (n = 11), two deep‐sea chimaerids rarely caught in the waters off New Zealand, were collected from research trawl catches and commercial fishery catches around New Zealand at depths between 400 and 1300 m, between 2014 and 2016. Additional preserved specimens of both species (n = 58) from museum collections were analysed for size, sex and maturity. External assessment of male claspers and a combination of internal assessments of female gonad mass and oviducal gland width, were used to determine maturity. For both species, length at first maturity was 0·70–0·82 of their maximum observed chimaera length (LC), with females maturing at a larger size. Length at maturity for C. carophila (LC range: 28·7–103·9 cm) was estimated at 72·5 cm LC for males (n = 163) and 82·5 LC for females (n = 58). In H. homonycteris, length at maturity (length range: 78·6–99·8 cm LC) was estimated at 79·1 cm LC for males (n = 51) and 80·1 cm LC for females (n = 17). Ovarian fecundity was up to 31 for C. carophila and sperm storage was confirmed in the oviducal gland of this species. Both species preyed on benthic invertebrates. Some C. carophila and H. homonycteris inhabit depths beyond most current fisheries, but both species appear to be relatively rare and have reproductive parameters characteristic of low productivity, which may make these species vulnerable to population decline if mortality was to increase in the future.  相似文献

Two different α‐glucosidase‐producing thermophilic E134 strains were isolated from a hot spring in Kozakli, Turkey. Based on the phenotypic, phylogenetic and chemotaxonomic evidence, the strain was proposed to be a species of G. toebii. Its thermostable exo‐α‐1,4‐glucosidases also were characterized and compared, which were purified from the intracellular and extracellular fractions with estimated molecular weights of 65 and 45 kDa. The intracellular and extracellular α‐glucosidases showed optimal activity at 65 °C, pH 7·0, and at 70 °C, pH 6·8, with 3·65 and 0·83 Km values for the pNPG substrate, respectively. Both enzymes remained active over temperature and pH ranges of 35–70 °C and 4·5–11·0. They retained 82 and 84% of their activities when incubated at 60 °C for 5 h. Their relative activities were 45–75% and 45–60% at pH 4·5 and 11·0 values for 15 h at 35 °C. They could hydrolyse the α‐1,3 and α‐1,4 bonds on substrates in addition to a high transglycosylation activity, although the intracellular enzyme had more affinity to the substrates both in hydrolysis and transglycosylation reactions. Furthermore, although sodium dodecyl sulfate behaved as an activator for both of them at 60 °C, urea and ethanol only increased the activity of the extracellular α‐glucosidase. By this study, G. toebii E134 strain was introduced, which might have a potential in biotechnological processes when the conformational stability of its enzymes to heat, pH and denaturants were considered. Aims:  Zero‐valent iron (ZVI) filters may provide an efficient method to mitigate the contamination of produce crops through irrigation water. Methods:  A field‐scale system was utilized to evaluate the effectiveness of a biosand filter (S), a biosand filter with ZVI incorporated (ZVI) and a control (C, no treatment) in decontaminating irrigation water. An inoculum of c. 8·5 log CFU 100 ml?1 of Escherichia coli O157:H12 was introduced to all three column treatments in 20‐l doses. Filtered waters were subsequently overhead irrigated to ‘Tyee’ spinach plants. Water, spinach plant and soil samples were obtained on days 0, 1, 4, 6, 8, 10, 13 and 15 and analysed for E. coli O157:H12 populations. Results:  ZVI filters inactivated c. 6 log CFU 100 ml?1E. coli O157:H12 during filtration on day 0, significantly (P < 0·05) more than S filter (0·49 CFU 100 ml?1) when compared to control on day 0 (8·3 log CFU 100 ml?1). On day 0, spinach plants irrigated with ZVI‐filtered water had significantly lower E. coli O157 counts (0·13 log CFU g?1) than spinach irrigated with either S‐filtered (4·37 log CFU g?1) or control (5·23 log CFU g?1) water. Soils irrigated with ZVI‐filtered water contained E. coli O157:H12 populations below the detection limit (2 log CFU g?1), while those irrigated with S‐filtered water (3·56 log CFU g?1) were significantly lower than those irrigated with control (4·64 log CFU g?1). Conclusions:  ZVI biosand filters were more effective in reducing E. coli O157:H12 populations in irrigation water than sand filters. Significance and Impact of the Study:  Zero‐valent ion treatment may be a cost‐effective mitigation step to help small farmers reduce risk of foodborne E. coli infections associated with contamination of leafy greens.  相似文献

Aims: To assess the effectiveness of sequential treatments of radish seeds with aqueous chlorine dioxide (ClO2) and dry heat in reducing the number of Escherichia coli O157:H7. Methods and Results: Radish seeds containing E. coli O157:H7 at 5·5 log CFU g?1 were treated with 500 μg ml?1 ClO2 for 5 min and subsequently heated at 60°C and 23% relative humidity for up to 48 h. Escherichia coli O157:H7 decreased by more than 4·8 log CFU g?1 after 12 h dry‐heat treatment. The pathogen was inactivated after 48 h dry‐heat treatment, but the germination rate of treated seeds was substantially reduced from 91·2 ± 5·0% to 68·7 ± 12·3%. Conclusions: Escherichia coli O157:H7 on radish seeds can be effectively reduced by sequential treatments with ClO2 and dry heat. To eliminate E. coli O157:H7 on radish seeds without decreasing the germination rate, partial drying of seeds at ambient temperature before dry‐heat treatment should be investigated, and conditions for drying and dry‐heat treatment should be optimized. Significance and Impact of the study: This study showed that sequential treatment with ClO2 and dry‐heat was effective in inactivating large numbers of E. coli O157:H7 on radish seeds. These findings will be useful when developing sanitizing strategies for seeds without compromising germination rates.  相似文献

Aims: The purification and biochemical properties of the 1,4‐β‐xylosidase of an oenological yeast were investigated. Methods and Results: An ethanol‐tolerant 1,4‐β‐xylosidase was purified from cultures of a strain of Pichia membranifaciens grown on xylan at 28°C. The enzyme was purified by sequential chromatography on DEAE cellulose and Sephadex G‐100. The relative molecular mass of the enzyme was determined to be 50 kDa by SDS‐PAGE. The activity of 1,4‐β‐xylosidase was optimum at pH 6·0 and at 35°C. The activity had a Km of 0·48 ± 0·06 mmol l?1 and a Vmax of 7·4 ± 0·1 μmol min?1 mg?1 protein for p‐nitrophenyl‐β‐d ‐xylopyranoside. Conclusions: The enzyme characteristics (pH and thermal stability, low inhibition rate by glucose and ethanol tolerance) make this enzyme a good candidate to be used in enzymatic production of xylose and improvement of hemicellulose saccharification for production of bioethanol. Significance and Impact of the Study: This study may be useful for assessing the ability of the 1,4‐β‐xylosidase from P. membranifaciens to be used in the bioethanol production process.  相似文献

Ultraviolet‐B (UVB) radiation due sunlight can result in sunburns and/or suntans. Sunburn occurs only several hours after solar UVB radiation, while a suntan requires several days to several weeks to develop. In the present study, we measured serum and urine levels of melanin‐related metabolites, 5‐S‐cysteinyldopa (5‐S‐CD) and 6‐hydroxy‐5‐methoxyindole‐2‐carboxylic acid (6H5MI2C), in nine subjects exposed to normal sunlight over the course of 12 months. We collected samples in the middle of each month and examined the variation of the markers, the correlation between them, and their correlation with solar UVB radiation. Those markers exhibited a seasonal variation with lower values in the winter and higher values in the summer. Levels of 5‐S‐CD and 6H5MI2C in the serum showed 48% and 54% increases in the summer compared with those in the winter, respectively. Comparison of 5‐S‐CD in the serum and urine showed the highest correlation (r2 = 0.344), followed by the pair of 5‐S‐CD and 6H5MI2C in the serum. Levels of 5‐S‐CD in the serum showed the highest correlation (r2 = 0.729) with the mean solar UVB radiation during the first 10 d of the month, while 6H5MI2C in the serum was highly correlated (r2 = 0.483) with solar UVB radiation during the previous month. Levels of 5‐S‐CD and 6H5MI2C in the serum appear to reflect the degrees of skin injury and pigmentation in the skin, respectively.  相似文献

Uncertainty regarding the age determination of the Brazilian codling Urophycis brasiliensis has hampered its stock assessment. Transverse sections of otoliths displayed up to seven (in males) and 12 (in females) alternate opaque and translucent bands that could not be conclusively validated as annuli, resulting in unrealistically high ages of first maturity (A50) (A50male = 4·5 years and A50female = 6 years). Therefore, growth was described by the von Bertalanffy (VB) model using an alternative approach that combined microstructure data (daily growth increments) and a fixed asymptotic total length (L). This approach was supported by applying it to two other co‐occurring species, the whitemouth croaker Micropogonias furnieri and the king weakfish Macrodon atricauda, for which daily and annual ring formation has previously been validated. The sensitivity to realistic errors associated with the choice of the L and the daily increment readings was shown to be low. The results show that U. brasiliensis has a fast growth rate (Kmale = 1·19 year?1, Kfemale = 0·71 year?1) and early maturation (A50male = 1·1–1·5 years, A50female = 1·6–1·8 years); typical life‐history traits for a sub‐tropical coastal gadiform. This novel study offers an alternative approach for age and growth reconstruction for species with complex patterns of opaque and translucent bands provided that daily growth increments in the yearlings can be counted and L reliably estimated.  相似文献
