Dynamic management has been proposed as a complementary strategy to gene banks for the conservation of genetic resources.
The evolution of frequencies of genes for specific resistance towards powdery mildew (caused by Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici) in populations of a French network for dynamic management of bread wheat genetic resources was investigated after 10 years
of multiplication without human selection. The objective was to determine whether specific resistance gene diversity was maintained
in the populations and whether any changes could be attributed to selection due to pathogen pressure. Seven populations, originating
from four of the network sites, were characterized and compared to the initial population for six specific resistance gene
frequencies detected by nine Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici isolates. Diversity decreased at the population level, but because of a strong differentiation between the populations, this
diversity was maintained at the network level. The comparison of Fst parameters estimated on neutral markers (RFLP) and on resistance gene data revealed that in two of the populations specific
resistance genes had been selected by pathogen pressure, whereas evolution in two other populations seemed to be the result
of genetic drift. For the three last populations, conclusions were less clear, as one had probably experienced a strong bottleneck
and the other two presented intermediate Fst values. A dynamic management network with sites contrasted for pathogen pressure, allowing genetic drift in some populations
and selection in others, appeared, at least on the short term, to be a good tool for maintaining the diversity of genes for
specific resistance to powdery mildew.

Is the change of winter wheat yield under warming caused by shortened reproductive period? 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Previous reports from laboratory-controlled experiments and models considered that a shorter reproductive period could be the main reason for wheat yield reduction in the warmer world. However, this conclusion needs to be proved carefully by field-scale experiments. In this study, a field-scale continuous open-warming experiment was conducted to quantify the adjustment of winter wheat growth and yield under conventional tillage (CT) and no-till (NT) systems in the North China Plain (NCP). Canopy temperatures were warmed using infrared heaters between 1.0 and 1.6°C (daytime and nighttime, respectively) above the control. Wheat yields under CT were not significantly reduced over the two seasons (2010 and 2011), but yields under NT were 3.3% and 6.1% lower, respectively. The growing seasons for both CT and NT were shortened 6 days in 2010 and 11 days in 2011; however, the reproductive periods were maintained. The shortened days were due to a significantly shorter springtime re-greening stage followed by minimal changes in other phenological stages (jointing, flag completed, heading, anthesis, and grain-filling). The temporal advance by warming resulted in lower growing-season mean air temperatures (MAT) for warmed plots than the control from 0.23 to 4.22°C for the same subsequent phenological stages. Warming increased the number of tillers m−2 and kernel weight, but tended to decrease the number of spikes m−2 in the two tillage systems. The heavier kernels offset the yield reduction from smaller number of spikes. Warming increased the wheat aboveground biomass from 10% to 20% suggesting the potential to sequester more CO2. This study suggests that winter wheat might adjust its growth (shortened vegetative period to maintain reproductive period) to partly compensate for the negative effects from global warming in this temperate irrigated cropland. 相似文献

Recent years have witnessed the emergence of a literature examining the effects of giving birth to sons on postmenopausal longevity in pre-industrial mothers. The original paper in this lineage used a sample (n=375) of Sami mothers from northern Finland and found that, relative to daughters, giving birth to sons substantially reduced maternal longevity. We examine this hypothesis using a similar and a much larger sample (n=930) of pre-industrial Sami women from northern Sweden, who in terms of their demographic, sociocultural and biological conditions, closely resemble the original study population. In contrast to the previously reported results for the Sami, we find no evidence of a negative effect of sons on maternal longevity. Thus, we provide the most compelling evidence to date that the leading result in the literature must be approached with scepticism. 相似文献

Capitalizing upon the genomic characteristics of long-term random mating populations, sampling from pre-selected landraces is a promising approach for broadening the genetic base of elite germplasm for quantitative traits.Abstract
Genome-enabled strategies for harnessing untapped allelic variation of landraces are currently evolving. The success of such approaches depends on the choice of source material. Thus, the analysis of different strategies for sampling allelic variation from landraces and their impact on population diversity and linkage disequilibrium (LD) is required to ensure the efficient utilization of diversity. We investigated the impact of different sampling strategies on diversity parameters and LD based on high-density genotypic data of 35 European maize landraces each represented by more than 20 individuals. On average, five landraces already captured ~95% of the molecular diversity of the entire dataset. Within landraces, absence of pronounced population structure, consistency of linkage phases and moderate to low LD levels were found. When combining data of up to 10 landraces, LD decay distances decreased to a few kilobases. Genotyping 24 individuals per landrace with 5k SNPs was sufficient for obtaining representative estimates of diversity and LD levels to allow an informed pre-selection of landraces. Integrating results from European with Central and South American landraces revealed that European landraces represent a unique and diverse spectrum of allelic variation. Sampling strategies for harnessing allelic variation from landraces depend on the study objectives. If the focus lies on the improvement of elite germplasm for quantitative traits, we recommend sampling from pre-selected landraces, as it yields a wide range of diversity, allows optimal marker imputation, control for population structure and avoids the confounding effects of strong adaptive alleles.9.

Primary cultured human urothelial cells derived from ureter specimens of urological patients were used to evaluate induction of DNA-damage by OTA in the alkaline single-cell gel electrophoresis (comet) assay. With the cultured cells from each donor a separate comet assay was performed and tail length of the damaged DNA was measured. A broad spectrum of effects was detected between the individual cell cultures with effects reaching from tail lengths on control level up to strongly enhanced tail lengths.All donors of urothelial tissue were additionally genotyped for several xenobiotic metabolising enzymes (cytochrome P450 1A2, glutathione S-transferases T1, M1, and P1, N-acetyltransferase 2) in lymphocyte DNA. The genotype was then correlated with the genotoxic effects obtained in the comet assay.No correlation was found with CYP1A2, GSTT1, and GSTM1 genotypes whereas for GSTP1 stronger genotoxic effects were found in cells from donors with hetero-and homozygously mutated (w/m, m/m) genotypes compared to homozygous wildtypes. The strongest hint for a correlation was found for NAT2, as cells from donors with homozygous mutated alleles (m/m), known as slow acetylators, displayed a higher susceptibility to OTA in the comet assay than cells from donors with the heterozygously mutated or wildtype alleles (rapid acetylators). 相似文献

The legume Chamaecrista fasciculata attracts ants to its extrafloral nectar (EFN) which can lead to reduced herbivory and increased fecundity for the plant. In Florida, Opuntia stricta and O. humifusa, hosts of the invasive moth Cactoblastis cactorum, are often found growing in close association with C. fasciculata. We tested the hypotheses that O. stricta and O. humifusa individuals have higher ant abundance, lower levels of herbivore damage, and increased growth when growing in close association with C. fasciculata compared with individuals not growing near the plant. We also experimentally placed C. cactorum eggsticks and pupae on Opuntia individuals to see if ant predation of these stages occurred, and if so, whether predation rates were higher on individuals growing close to C. fasciculata. Opuntia plants near C. fasciculata were less likely to be attacked by C. cactorum and had higher ant abundance than plants far from C. fasciculata. Field surveys showed that Opuntia plants near C. fasciculata had a lower proportion of cladodes with C. cactorum damage of any type. Proportions of cladodes with damage from five native herbivores were not significantly different between treatments. In addition, Opuntia individuals growing near C. fasciculata added proportionately more pads during the growing season. We found evidence of ant predation on 15.9% of C. cactorum eggsticks and 17.6% of pupae. In August and October of 2008, there was significantly more evidence of predation on eggs and pupae placed on Opuntia individuals near C. fasciculata. No effect of distance to C. fasciculata was seen in November of 2008, potentially because plants were no longer producing EFN at this time. Our finding that Opuntia plants close to C. fasciculata show reduced herbivory from invasive C. cactorum, but not from the native herbivores examined, suggests that patterns of associational resistance may be influenced by the co-evolutionary history of the organisms in question. 相似文献

As in several Central European areas, in the Bohemian Forest Ecosystem (Germany and the Czech Republic), fenced feeding enclosures are used for the winter management of red deer (Cervus elaphus), which is an important component of the Eurasian lynx’s (Lynx lynx) winter diet. Using GPS telemetry data, we tested whether (1) lynx hunted red deer mainly selecting for high prey densities and environmental characteristics like a good level of habitat heterogeneity, independently of the enclosures’ presence; (2) enclosures attracted lynx and (3) positively influenced their predation on red deer, being predictable and abundant prey sources throughout the winter; or (4) extremely high deer densities inside the enclosures rather negatively influenced lynx predation on this species. We first compared lynx space usage and predation on red deer inside and outside the enclosures. Then, we investigated the effects of the environment, prey densities and the enclosure distance for the area outside of enclosures. Prey densities positively influenced lynx space usage, whilst the probability of predation on red deer was highest at medium to low red deer densities. Habitat heterogeneity and terrain ruggedness influenced both lynx space usage and probability of predation on red deer. Regarding the effect of enclosures, the ratio “area used during night vs. daytime” was larger by a factor of 2 inside compared to outside enclosures, and the probability of predation on red deer was three times higher inside rather than outside of enclosures; however, these differences were not statistically significant, suggesting that the influence of the enclosures is not very pronounced. 相似文献

The consequence of helping behavior on breeders fitness is stillcontroversial. We used multivariate analyses to investigatefor the effects of male and female subordinates on breeders'components of fitness in the Alpine marmot, Marmota marmota.We found that male and female subordinates, respectively, increasedand decreased juvenile survival during winter. Thus, we giveevidence that male subordinates should be considered as helpers,and that helpers provided breeders with immediate reproductivesuccess gains, whereas subordinates females were costly. Helpershad no positive effects on female body condition, on persistence(future survival) of dominants, and on future reproduction (occurrenceand size of a litter). Helpers thus did not provide breederswith delayed fitness benefits, and therfore, the load-lighteninghypothesis was not supported. On the contrary, helpers had delayedfitness cost for dominant males and, consequently, for dominantfemales. Immediate benefits counterbalanced by delayed costssuggested an optimal number of helpers in the family group bothfrom male and female perspectives. An optimality model wellpredicted the observed mean number of helpers in Alpine marmotfamily groups. Optimal numbers of helpers were slightly differentfor males and females, suggesting a potential conflict of interestbetween dominants. Identifying the location and amount of grain crop residues (stubble) in Australia is necessary for determining the viability of potential biofuel plant locations. We combined 22 years of crop statistics with harvest indices and land use to arrive at spatially explicit stubble productivity figures. Stubble quantities using different focal radii and from different seasons provide an insight into the feasibility of its use for bioenergy. We focus on areas where the stubble concentrations within a 50 km radius were at least 500 kt per year; the amount suggested for a viable lignocellolosic bioethanol facility. The outcome of this study has been to show, for the first time, where there are large amounts of stubble in Australia. Whether the supply of stubble is sufficiently constant over time and indeed available at a price that is economic for a biofuel plant must be subject to future work. 相似文献

Cities are known to be extraordinarily rich in alien plant species compared to rural environments. This is related to specific attributes of urban areas including the availability of natural resources and habitats (namely geological substrates and land cover), the dispersal pathways and associated propagule pressure due to trade and traffic, and the proximity many urban hubs have to rivers. Here we explored how richness and proportions of alien species introduced after the discovery of the Americas (so-called neophytes), can be explained by environmental covariates along the urbanization gradient from very rural to very urbanized grid cells. We tested whether there is a specific urban effect, either as an interaction effect of urbanized areas that changes these general relationships, or if there is an effect due to specific urban conditions. We found that the environmental covariates explaining richness as well as proportions of neophytes remain largely the same across the rural–urban gradient. There is, however, an effect of urbanized area on neophyte species richness and proportions, which also incorporates strictly urban conditions. Rivers, roads and railroads contribute disproportionately less to the increase of neophyte species diversity in more urbanized areas, which might be due to the already higher number of neophytes in cities. We argue that the conditions determining neophyte richness in cities are not fundamentally different from those in rural environments, but extend on the same environmental axis, i.e. having different positions along the gradient towards the upper end. 相似文献

Normal mouse serum has been shown to contain an inhibitor of interleukin 2 (IL-2). Here we report that a molecule with similar activity cannot be found in normal human serum (NHS). Although NHS inhibited the IL-2-dependent proliferation of mouse CTLL cells, as expected of an IL-2 inhibitor, it also had inhibitory activity on IL-3-dependent cells and was cytolytic to IL-2-independent mouse cells as measured by a 51Cr release assay, indicating a nonspecific effect. In addition, NHS had no effect on the IL-2-dependent proliferation of human peripheral blood T-cell blasts. Fractionation of NHS by size exclusion HPLC failed to separate cytolytic activity from any putative true IL-2 inhibitor activity. The cytolytic component was not related to immunoglobulin since it had a molecular weight of 50,000 to 60,000 and was not bound by protein-A-Sepharose. However, its molecular weight, heat lability, and trypsin sensitivity suggest it to be a protein. 相似文献

Community ecologists have attempted to explain species abundance distribution (SAD) shape for more than 80 years, but usually without relating SAD shape explicitly to ecological variables. We explored whether the scale (total assemblage abundance) and shape (assemblage evenness) of avifaunal SADs were related to ecological covariates. We used data on avifaunas, in-site habitat structure and landscape context that were assembled from previous studies; this amounted to 197 transects distributed across 16,000 km2 of the box-ironbark forests of southeastern Australia. We used Bayesian conditional autoregressive models to link SAD scale and shape to these ecological covariates. Variation in SAD scale was relatable to some ecological covariates, especially to landscape vegetation cover and to tree height. We could not find any relationships between SAD shape and ecological covariates. SAD shape, the core component in SAD theory, may hold little information about how assemblages are governed ecologically and may result from statistical processes, which, if general, would indicate that SAD shape is not useful for distinguishing among theories of assemblage structure. 相似文献

MOTIVATION: In this article we build a model of the CpG dinucleotide substitution rate and use it to challenge the claim that, that rate underwent a sudden mammalian-specific increase approximately 90 million years ago. The evidence supporting this hypothesis comes from the application of a model of neutral substitution rates able to account for elevated CpG dinucleotide substitution rates. With the initial goal of improving that model's accuracy, we introduced a modification enabling us to account for boundary effects arising by the truncation of the Markov field, as well as improving the optimization procedure required for estimating the substitution rates. RESULTS: When using this modified method to reproduce the supporting analysis, the evidence of the rate shift vanished. Our analysis suggests that the CpG-specific rate has been constant over the relevant time period and that the asserted acceleration of the CpG rate is likely an artifact of the original model. 相似文献

Is there an association between variables of postural control and strength in adolescents? The risk of sustaining sport injuries is particularly high in adolescents. Deficits in postural control and muscle strength represent 2 important intrinsic injury risk factors. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between variables of static and dynamic postural control and isometric and dynamic muscle strength and to find out whether there is an association between measures of postural control and muscle strength. Twenty-eight adolescents participated in this study (age 16.8 ± 0.6 years; body mass index 20.5 ± 1.8 kg · m(-2)). Biomechanic tests included the measurements of maximal isometric leg extension force (MIF) and rate of force development (RFDmax) of the leg extensors on a leg press with the feet resting on a force platform, vertical jumping force, and height (countermovement jump [CMJ]) on a force plate and the assessment of static (1-legged stance on a balance platform) and dynamic (mediolateral perturbation impulse on a balance platform) postural control. The significance level was set at p < 0.05. No significant associations were observed between measures of static and dynamic postural control. Significant positive correlations were detected between variables of isometric and dynamic muscle strength with r-values ranging from 0.441 to 0.779 (p < 0.05). Based on these models, a 100-N increase in MIF of the leg extensors was associated with 3.9, 4.2, and 6.5% better maximal CMJ force, CMJ height, and RFDmax, respectively. No significant correlations were observed between variables of postural control and muscle strength. The nonsignificant correlation between static/dynamic postural control and muscle strength implies that primarily dynamic measures of postural control should be incorporated in injury risk assessment and that postural control and muscle strength are independent of each other and may have to be trained complementary for lower extremity injury prevention and rehabilitation purposes. 相似文献
