Three new species of the genus Gammarus are described from Lijiang, Yunnan Province, South China. Gammarus elevatus sp. nov. is characterized by mid-dorsal keel on pleonites 1-3 and compressed elevation on urosomites 1-2; G. denticulatus sp. nov. by many small spinules and setae on pleonites 1-3; G. stagnarius sp. nov. by lack of calceoli on antenna 2 and shorter inner ramus of uropod 3. These amphipods are compared with other known Gammarus species from China.  相似文献

Summary 1. The amphipod Gammarus pulex , introduced to Irish rivers with the aim of enhancing trout feeding, is displacing the native Gammarus duebeni celticus . These two species are generally associated with different environmental conditions and macroinvertebrate communities, confounding assessment of effects of the invader as compared with the native on fish populations. Here, we uncouple effects of the two Gammarus species from environmental gradients.
2. A weir dissects a lowland stretch of the River Lissan, slowing the upstream invasion by G. pulex and resulting in contiguous G. pulex , mixed species and G. d. celticus reaches. Total invertebrate abundance and biomass in the benthos were significantly higher in the G. pulex reach, driven by high invader abundance, with low abundance of other taxa. Gammarus pulex was particularly prominent in night-time drift.
3. Correspondingly, densities and biomass of 0+ trout were significantly higher in the G. pulex reach, while instantaneous loss rates were lower. Fish growth rates were similar among the three reaches.
4. In the G. pulex reach, this invader dominated the diet of 0+ trout, leading to ingestion of significantly higher invertebrate biomass than fish in the other reaches. Fish generally preyed on Gammarus in proportion to its abundance, but exhibited some positive selection for G. pulex in the invaded reach.
5. The negative effects of the invader on native invertebrates are contrasted with positive effects on juvenile trout. This indicates changes in energy flux after invasion, with differential resource use or assimilation by G. pulex probable underlying mechanisms. As the frequency of amphipod invasions increases globally, investigations of their role as strong interactors at multiple levels of ecological organisation is required if the consequences of deliberate and unintentional introductions are to be predicted, and ultimately, prevented.  相似文献

The apostome genus, Hyalophysa, is a symbiont on most littoral decapods in the US, but no other crustacean orders have been investigated. When exuvia of the amphipod Marinogammarus obtusatus were examined, they contained swimming trophonts whose characteristics revealed by Chatton–Lwoff stains describe a new species of Gymnodinioides. Its unique characteristic is the retention in the trophont of a polykinety similar to the falciform field of the tomite, the non-feeding, migratory microstome stage common to apostome genera. The trophont's anterior pattern of kineties also resembles that of the tomite. Speculations that speciation in Gymnodinioides may result from isolation on different hosts, changes in the internal feeding apparatus, delays or mishaps during morphogenesis, or habitat changes affecting the host must consider the case of G. pitelkae. The tomite may not respond to the signals from its premoult host to change to the macrostome infraciliature although the feeding apparatus is formed.  相似文献

An attempt to improve the food base for brown trout Salmo trutta in Northern Ireland was made in 195859 by deliberately introducing English Gammarus pule.x into several Irish rivers. In addition, another amphipod Crangonyx pseudogracilis, was later accidently introduced into Irish waters. Our study represents the first attempt to examine the trophic interactions between a native fish predator ( S. trutta ) and an array of these native ( Gammarus dueheni celticus ) and introduced ( G. pulex and C pseudogracilis ) amphipods. Feeding experiments, involving young brown trout predators and amphipod prey, revealed that the fish actively selected C. pseudogracilis relative to two alternative Gammarus prey species. Although the trout encountered the Gammarus species more than C pseudogracilis, they were eaten less than Crangonyx. Difficulties in handling and ingestion of Gammarus by trout may be a key component of the preference for the smaller, more easily handled Crangonyx. The microdistribution of the species was altered by the fish, due to predation being greater in particular microhabitats. Our study showed that the introduction of the herbivorous C. pseudogracilis into Irish freshwaters may represent a useful addition to fish diets, particularly for small and or juvenile fish. The repercussions of the deliberate introduction of G. pule.x are less clear. It may improve feeding for fish. but only if it can coexist with indigenous macromvertebrates and thus ultimately improve the range and quantity of possible food items in predator diets. Alternatively, being highly predatory towards other macroinvertebrates including G. d. celticus and C. pseudogracilis, G. pule.x may be deleterious to the diversity of the resident benthic community and hence reduce the diversity of prey available to fish predators.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Microsporidia of the genus Pleistophora are important parasites of fish and crustacea. Pleistophora mulleri has been described previously as a parasite of the gammarid amphipod crustacean Gammarus duebeni celticus in Irish freshwater habitats. Through a survey of European G. duebeni populations, P. mulleri was found to be widely distributed in the western British Isles (Wales, Scotland, and the Isle of Man), and populations of the subspecies Gammarus duebeni duebeni as well as G. d. celticus were infected. Pleistophora infections were also detected in G. d. duebeni sampled from the Bay of Gdansk on Poland's Baltic coast, indicating a wide distribution of Pleistophora in European G. duebeni . Sequencing and phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA , 18S rRNA , and Rpb1 genes of P. mulleri suggest that this species may be synonymous with P. typicalis , a parasite of fish. These findings suggest that amphipod crustaceans may act as intermediate or reservoir hosts for microsporidian parasites of fish.  相似文献

In freshwaters in Northern Ireland, several amphipods occur, with the native Gammarus dubeni celticus and introduced Gammarus pulex and Crangonyx pseudogracilis often being found together in the same river and lake systems. We examined what may happen when the three amphipod species co-occur within the same patch of lake or pooled area of a river. We conducted a laboratory simulation of a lake/river habitat, and this showed that G. d. celticus and G. pulex exhibited very similar distribution patterns to one another, when presented with the same complex habitat template. Such microdistribution patterns contrasted markedly with the microhabitat usage by C. pseudogracilis. Cannibalism was low for all species in both single and mixed species treatments. Intraguild predation (IGP) was also very low on both G. pulex and G. d. celticus when all three species co-occurred. However, C. pseudogracilis suffered heavy IGP from both Gammarus species, with 33% of the tank population of C. pseudogracilis being eliminated in the presence of Gammarus within only 12 h. Such IGP may account for C. pseudogracilis occurring more frequently and in greater abundance in patches of natural lotic and lentic systems where predatory Gammarus are either absent or scarce.  相似文献

The mangrove forests of Australasia have many endemic bird species but their evolution and radiation in those habitats has been little studied. One genus with several mangrove specialist species is Gerygone (Passeriformes: Acanthizidae). The phylogeny of the Acanthizidae is reasonably well understood but limited taxon sampling for Gerygone has constrained understanding of its evolution and historical biogeography in mangroves. Here we report on a phylogenetic analysis of Gerygone based on comprehensive taxon sampling and a multilocus dataset of thirteen loci spread across the avian genome (eleven nuclear and two mitochondrial loci). Since Gerygone includes three species restricted to Australia's coastal mangrove forests, we particularly sought to understand the biogeography of their evolution in that ecosystem. Analyses of individual loci, as well as of a concatenated dataset drawn from previous molecular studies indicates that the genus as currently defined is not monophyletic, and that the Grey Gerygone (G. cinerea) from New Guinea should be transferred to the genus Acanthiza. The multilocus approach has permitted the nuanced view of the group's evolution into mangrove ecosystems having occurred on multiple occasions, in three non-overlapping time frames, most likely first by the G. magnirostris lineage, and subsequently followed by those of G. tenebrosa and G. levigaster.  相似文献

Comparative analysis of the G- and C-banding patterns in six morphologically similar species of the genus Gerbilliscus(G. gambianus, G. guineae, G. kempi, Gerbilliscus sp., G. robustus and G. leucogaster) and one belonging to the genus Gerbillurus (G. tytonis) from 27 West, East and South African localities was carried out. Our study revealed that 17 rearrangements comprising seven fissions, five translocations and five inversions occurred in the evolution of this group, with 1-13 rearrangements differentiating the various species. In addition the unusually large sex chromosomes appear to be species-specific as judged by size and morphology reflecting structural rearrangements as well as the variable presence of a large amount of C-heterochromatin found in each species at a particular chromosomal location. These karyotypic features allow us to recognize five distinct species in West Africa (compared to the two recognized in recent taxonomic lists) and to roughly delimit their geographical distributions. The pattern of phylogenetic relationships inferred from a cladistic analysis of the chromosomal data is in good agreement with recent molecular phylogenetic studies that recognize a West African species group within the genus Gerbilliscus, and the monophyly of both Gerbilliscus and Gerbillurus.  相似文献

The mutual predatory behaviour between Gammarus pulex (Linnaeus, 1758) and Gammarus duebeni celticus (Stock & Pinkster, 1970) is described. The implications of the predatory nature of these species are discussed in terms of the feeding ecology of Gammarus and other amphipods. Predation rates by males on moulted congeneric females are assessed and compared. When males are present at the moult of a congeneric female, 100%of females are eaten in both species/sex combinations. When females are allowed to recover from moulting prior to presentation to a congeneric male, predation rates are significantly reduced in both species. However, significantly more G. d. celticus females are eaten by G. pulex males compared with the reciprocal situation. The predatory 'clumping' behaviour of both species is described and shown to be a form of feeding frenzy upon congenerics. Clumping behaviour also results in significantly higher rates of congeneric predation on G. d. celticus females than on G. pulex females. Support is thus given to the hypothesis that differential predation by males on moulted females may be the primary mechanism by which the introduced G. pulex has displaced the native Irish species G. d. celticus . The implications of amphipod congeneric predation are discussed in terms of observed patterns of interspecific coexistence and exclusion.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. Assessing the effects on communities of invasive species is often confounded by environmental factors. In Irish rivers, the introduced amphipod Gammarus pulex replaces the native G. duebeni celticus in lowland stretches. The two amphipods are associated with different macroinvertebrate communities, which may in part be the result of natural longitudinal physicochemical change. However, this hinders assessment of any direct community impacts of the invasive as compared with the native species. Here, we report on a fortuitous circumstance that allowed us to uncouple the community effects of Gammarus species from environmental differences.
2. The lowland stretch of the River Lissan is dissected by a weir, which has slowed the upstream invasion by G. pulex . We took physicochemical measurements and macroinvertebrate samples from three contiguous 150 m reaches of this stretch with G. pulex only, mixed Gammarus and G. d. celticus only communities.
3. We found no biologically significant differences in physicochemistry among the three reaches. Overall invertebrate densities did not differ among reaches. However, G. pulex numerically dominated its reach, whilst G. d. celticus abundance was relatively low in its reach. The G. pulex reach had significantly higher overall biomass because of high invader abundance. In addition, both diversity and species richness of macroinvertebrate communities were lower in the G. pulex than the G. d. celticus reach, with the mixed Gammarus reach intermediate.
4. Ordination indicated distinctly different associations of invertebrate community samples and taxa that were best explained by the distributions of the Gammarus species. Again, the mixed Gammarus species samples were intermediate.
5. This study indicates that the invasive G. pulex has a greater impact on macroinvertebrate community composition than the native G. d. celticus , probably through biotic interactions such as predation.  相似文献

Metabolic variability across latitudinal populations of gammarid amphipods was examined in the summer by determining whole-animal rates of oxygen uptake (M(o)?) in four species with overlapping distribution patterns in the northeast Atlantic and Arctic oceans. Comparisons were made between an arctic/boreal species, Gammarus setosus, a subarctic/boreal species, Gammarus oceanicus, a boreal/temperate species, Gammarus duebeni duebeni, and a temperate species, Gammarus locusta. Measurements included acclimatized M(o)? in all four species and M(o)? after acclimation to 10°C in two populations of G. oceanicus and G. locusta. In G. oceanicus, acclimatized M(o)? declined with latitude (13° to 5°C) so that metabolic rates were lower in subarctic (79°N) relative to temperate (58°N) populations and similar to the values in G. setosus at 79°N. Consequently, there was no evidence for metabolic rate compensation in the colder-water, high-latitude populations in the summer. Further examination of the specific effects of temperature revealed similarities in M(o)? between populations of G. oceanicus acclimated at 10°C and similarities in thermal sensitivity (Q(10)) and activation energies (E(a)) on exposure to acute temperature change. In sharp contrast, there was no variation in summer acclimatized M(o)? with latitude in either G. d. duebeni between 48° and 70°N or G. locusta between 38° and 53°N. Instead, the two species maintained relatively high metabolic rates across latitudes, which were associated in G. locusta with differences in M(o)? and with Q(10) and E(a) values in amphipods acclimated at 10°C. The ability to compensate metabolic rate with latitude in the summer suggests greater metabolic flexibility, which predicts a greater capacity for survival during climate change of the temperate/boreal over the subarctic and arctic gammarid species.  相似文献

A phylogeny of the genus Gammarus Fabricius, 1775 was constructed using DNA sequence data from the mitochondrial genes COI and 16S, and the nuclear genes 18S and 28S. Both parsimony and Bayesian analyses were conducted on separate and combined data partitions. The Bayesian phylogeny from the combined analysis was selected as the preferred phylogenetic hypothesis. The hypothesis supports monophyly of the genus Gammarus, paraphyly of the European-North American Gammarus, and monophyly of the Asian Gammarus. The Asian clade was further split into a southeastern group and a northwestern group. The dramatic climate change following the uplift of the Tibetan Plateau was probably the most important factor in triggering the diversification of southeastern and northwestern groups. The genus Sinogammarus is invalid and should be part of the genus Gammarus.  相似文献

Hyphessobrycon is the most numerous and morphologically complex genus of Characidae, and includes 18 species reported for Colombia, from which thirteen belong to the heterorhabdus-group different methods have been proposed for species identification within this genus. This study used these species to undertake a morphogeometric analysis by the Box Truss and Thin Plate Splin (TPS) methods; 13 homologous landmarks type I and three type II were used. The result of cluster analysis indicated that these species are represented by two big groups: robust and thin. The uniform and non uniform components, and the principal warps (WP) and partial warps (Wparc), described the shape changes related to body depth, involving relative displacements of the appendicular skeleton and the cephalic region. All species were characterized by allometric growth with the exception of Hyphessobrycon mavro, who presented an isometry between the landmarks 6-7. Two new measures are proposed for species discrimination in the group (snout-supraoccipital spine distance and supraoccipital spine-pelvic fin).  相似文献

Molecular systematics of the parasitic protozoan Giardia intestinalis.   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The long-standing controversy regarding whether Giardia intestinalis is a single species prevalent in both human and animal hosts or a species complex consisting of morphologically similar organisms that differ in host range and other biotypic characteristics is an issue with important medical, veterinary, and environmental management implications. In the past decade, highly distinct genotypes (some apparently confined to particular host groups) have been identified by genetic analysis of samples isolated from different host species. The aim of this study was to undertake a phylogenetic analysis of G. intestinalis that were representative of all known major genetic groups and compare them with other Giardia species, viz. G. ardeae, G. muris, and G. microti. Segments from four "housekeeping" genes (specifying glutamate dehydrogenase, triose phosphate isomerase, elongation factor 1 alpha, and 18S ribosomal RNA) were examined by analysis of 0.48-0.69-kb nucleotide sequences determined from DNA amplified in polymerase chain reactions from each locus. In addition, isolates were compared by allozymic analysis of electrophoretic data obtained for 21 enzymes representing 23 gene loci. The results obtained from these independent techniques and different loci were essentially congruous. Analyses using G. ardeae and/or G. muris as outgroups supported the monophyly of G. intestinalis and also showed that this species includes genotypes that represent at least seven deeply rooted lineages, herein designated assemblages A-G. Inclusion of G. microti in the analysis of 18S rRNA sequence data demonstrated the monophyly of Giardia with the same median body morphology but did not support the monophyly of G. intestinalis, instead placing G. microti within G. intestinalis. The findings support the hypothesis that G. intestinalis is a species complex and suggest that G. microti is a member of this complex.  相似文献

The information on the biology and ecology of the Arctic sea ice-associated amphipods (Apherusa glacialis, Gammarus wilkitzkii, Onisimus glacialis, and O. nanseni) has increased, but their molecular taxonomic information still remains undisclosed. In the present study, we investigated long-range DNA sequences spanning 18S to 28S rDNA of these four sea ice-associated amphipods and analyzed their genetic relationships with other amphipod taxa. Variations of rDNA within the individuals of the same species were not detected. Phylogenetic analyses showed that each ice amphipod was separated, forming clusters with other conspecifics. Pairwise comparisons led to similar phylogenetic results, showing that the molecular taxonomy of the ice amphipods was in accordance with morphological systematics. In addition, these findings suggest that all four amphipods have little genetic variation compared with their morphologically defined conspecifics from temperate regions. Based on DNA taxonomy, G. wilkitzkii was supported as a species in good standing, refuting a recent synonymization with Gammarus duebeni. Considerably low genetic divergences of O. glacialis and O. nanseni in 18S, ITS, and 28S rDNA suggest the presence of population distinctions within species.  相似文献

The Gammaridae and Corixidae of an inland saline lake from 1975 to 1978   总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0

When observations began the population of Watch Lane Flash consisted of Gammarus duebeni and Sigara lateralis. Gammarus tigrinus was then introduced; probably during a transfer of water from a nearby canal. G. tigrinus rapidly increased in numbers and at the same time G. duebeni and S. lateralis decreased to zero. There followed a partial recolonisation by corixids but the species present were Sigara concinna and Sigara dorsalis. Throughout the study period corixid populations were stable in two immediately adjacent water bodies, one of which also contained G. duebeni. Thus the changes described were associated with the presence of G. tigrinus. The reasons for the success of G. tigrinus and its effects on other gammarids and corixids are discussed.  相似文献

Gliocephalis hyalina, a rarely seen microfungus with a morphology similar to the hyphomycete genus Aspergillus but with slimy conidia was found in a mixed microbial culture from soybean roots. This species has been reported sporadically since 1899, each time in association with other fungi or bacteria. Gliocephalis hyalina has not been maintained in monoxenic culture and requires other fungi to grow. Light and scanning electron microcope studies indicate that it is a biotrophic contact parasite of Fusarium species. The fungus may penetrate the cells but has no apparent deleterious effect on the growth or plant pathogenicity of its host. Phylogenetic analyses of partial nuclear small subunit rDNA sequences place G. hyalina near the Laboulbeniales, an order of obligate insect parasitic microfungi, and the related mycelial genus Pyxidiophora. Gliocephalis hyalina is mycoparasitic along with many Pyxidiophora species. These discoveries suggest that some "unculturable" microorganisms or "cryptic DNA" recovered from environmental DNA samples might represent obligate biotrophs that could be cultured and studied with simple techniques.  相似文献

Giardia sp.: comparison of electrophoretic karyotypes   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Species in the genus Giardia have been named on the basis of host specificity, cell dimensions, and median body morphology. Despite these criteria, the species taxonomy of Giardia is still in question. To investigate Giardia taxonomy on a molecular level, Giardia chromosomal DNA was analyzed by orthogonal-field-alternation gel electrophoresis (OFAGE) and transverse alternating field electrophoresis (TAFE). Chromosomal DNA of G. duodenalis isolates (human, muskrat, sheep, dog, beaver), G. muris (mouse), and G. ardeae (great blue heron) were subjected to OFAGE and TAFE analyses. Comparable DNA patterns were obtained by both electrophoretic methods, but OFAGE required 8 days while TAFE required only 3 days. DNA patterns among all G. duodenalis isolates, although quite similar to each other, were distinctly different from those of G. muris and G. ardeae; G. muris and G. ardeae DNA patterns were distinctly different from each other. A G. duodenalis (Portland 1) total DNA probe hybridized to the DNA of all G. duodenalis isolates on Southern blots, but not detectably to G. muris and G. ardeae DNA. Similarly, G. muris and G. ardeae total DNA probes only hybridized detectably to their respective DNA. One probe that appears to hybridize to the DNA of all G. duodenalis and to G. ardeae DNA rather than G. muris DNA has been developed. Another probe that hybridizes only to G. muris and G. ardeae DNA has been developed. These data suggest that the differentiation of Giardia isolated from host and environmental samples may eventually be accomplished by DNA probes. Additionally, these techniques perhaps combined with other criteria may lead to the establishment of a sound taxonomic scheme for this genus.  相似文献
