Seasonal morphological changes in three Daphnia species were followed over a two-year period in two lakes that differ in invertebrate and fish pressure. Whereas the morphology of D. hyalina, the biggest of the three species, varied little from season to season, D. cucullata, the smallest, exhibited the most pronounced seasonal changes in head height/carapace length ratio. The pattern of seasonal changes of body proportions was similar in all size classes and isometric growth of the head was reported for D. cucullata. Unlike the head, tail spine length/carapace length ratio almost did not vary seasonally. Strong negative allometry of tail spine growth was observed. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that helmets and tail spines provide protection against invertebrates in the two smallest, thus most endangered species.  相似文献

Summary It has been proposed that morphological defenses against predation have demographic costs. We measured the cost of a predator-induced morphological defense, using predaceous phantom midge larvae Chaoborus americanus (Insecta, Diptera) and the prey species Daphnia pulex (Crustacea, Cladocera). The induced defense is a neck tooth (and other pleiotropic structures) developed in juvenile D. pulex in the presence of C. americanus. Laboratory life table experiments, in the absence of predation, indicated the population growth rate of typical D. pulex was 11% to 39% greater than that of D. pulex exposed to C. americanus extract, or C. americanus-conditioned water. The reduction in population growth rate was most frequently associated with an increase in the time between birth and first reproduction. Induced individuals required twenty more hours at 23°C, and twenty five more hours at 20°C, to develop to the age of first reproduction. Under limiting food conditions age-specific survivorship and the number of offspring produced per female by the induced form were reduced relative to the typical form. As a result, the difference in population growth rates among forms was greater at the low food level as indicated by a highly significant food by form interaction effect. In addition to neck teeth and lowered reproductive rates, the offspring of induced form individuals had significantly longer tail-spines (7.2–7.5%), and primiparous adults from the induction treatment were significantly shorter than controls (3–8%).  相似文献

Summary This study examined the long term effects of predation by larvae of the midge Chaoborus and simulated fish predation on experimental Daphnia longispina populations. Chaoborus predation, relative to fish predation, led to populations composed of larger individuals as a whole, larger egg-bearing individuals, and a larger primiparous instar. Daphnia retained helmets beyond the first instar in response to the presence of Chaoborus. Both types of predation, relative to predator-free controls, reduced prey population size and rates of increase, but increased population death rates. The reduction in population size due to predation led to increased resource availability for individuals remaining in the populations and increased individual fecundity in the predation treatments. The differences noted between the Chaoborus, fish, and control treatments increased with predation intensity.  相似文献

Density and size structure changes of natural daphniids populations were studied in enclosures with a different level of fish predation. Daphnia pulicaria was totaly removed in high predation variants, and the differences of the mean body length both in adults and juveniles are apparent between low predation enclosure and enclosure without fish. Daphnia galeata was replaced by D. magna and D. pulicaria in the enclosure without fish. The decline of densities and the substantial (30–50%) and fast (during 12 days) shift of mean body length both in adults and juveniles of D. galeata was induced by the fish (carp fry) introduction to the high predation enclosures.  相似文献

During summer, Chaoborus punctipennis larval densities in the water column of fishless, eutrophic Triangle Lake become very high, and coincidently, the spined loricate rotifer Kelfcottia bostoniensis becomes the dominant zooplankter. Research was done to test the hypothesis that selective predation by Chaoborus on soft-bodied rotifers controls species dominance in the mid-summer zooplankton of this lake. In situ predation experiments showed positive selection by Chaoborus for the soft-bodied Synchaeta oblonga, negative selection for K. bostoniensis, and intermediate selection for Polyarthra vulgaris, a species with rapid escape tactics. However, during a 21 day in situ mesocosm experiment, zooplankton dominance and succession in Chaoborus-free enclosures was identical to that in enclosures with Chaoborus at lake density. Despite the selective predation, Chaoborus larvae may not exert significant top-down control on rotifers, whose intense reproductive output during mid-summer in temperate eutrophic lakes results in new individuals at rates that exceed predatory losses.  相似文献

Morphology and behaviour of Daphnia galeata in Lake Lille Lungegårdsvann, Bergen, Norway, were studied in two consecutive years. A portion of the population showed helmet cyclomorphosis in 1992, but no helmets developed in 1993. The non-helmeted individuals in 1992 were found in the littoral habitat during summer, whereas the helmeted morph stayed mainly in the pelagial. These differences in morphology and behaviour within and between years are likely to be caused by changes in predation regimes. Larvae of the predacious phantom midge, Chaoborus flavicans, were observed only in 1992, whereas the three-spined stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus, was present both years.  相似文献

I develop a demographic model that examines the impact of Chaoborus predation on the population dynamics and life history of Daphnia. Predation effects are determined through analysis of the various components of the predator-prey interaction (encounter, attack, strike efficiency), and are integrated into a stage-classified matrix population model. The model is parameterized with data from interactions between D. pulex and fourth-instar C. americanus. I test this model with two laboratory experiments that examine population growth of D. pulex under the influence of five different levels of Chaoborus predation. With the exception of a single predation treatment in each experiment, the model accurately predicted the observed reduction in Daphnia numbers with increasing Chaoborus predation. I then use this model to investigate the evolution of delayed reproduction in D. pulex that are exposed to Chaoborus. I ask whether delayed reproduction may evolve in Daphnia that are subjected to Chaoborus predation as a trade-off for the benefits of larger body size. The model predicts that the effectiveness of such a life history trade-off depends on the relative sizes of predator and prey. In some interactions between Chaoborus and Daphnia, increasing Daphnia body length by as little as 5% from base growth trajectories sufficiently increases fitness (by reducing vulnerability to Chaoborus predation) to compensate for the cost of delayed reproduction. In other interactions, however, increased body length provides no benefit to Daphnia (and may even reduce fitness), and selection would act against the evolution of delayed reproduction. Invertebrate predation on zooplankton was investigated in mesocosms in the shallow tropical Lake Monte Alegre, São Paulo State, Brazil, in the summer of 1999. Two treatments were applied: one with natural densities of prey and the predators Chaoborus brasiliensis and the water mite Krendowskia sp. (Pr+), and another without predators (Pr-). Three enclosures (volume: 6.6 m3 of water per enclosure) per treatment were installed in the sediment of the deepest area of the lake (5.0 m). At the beginning, Chaoborus larvae were present in Pr- enclosures, because of technical difficulties in preventing their entrance, but they virtually disappeared in the course of the experiment. Water mites were almost absent in Pr- enclosures. Chaoborus predation negatively influenced the Daphnia gessneri population, but not the populations of the copepods Tropocyclops prasinus and Thermocyclops decipiens and the rotifers Keratella spp. Death rates of Daphnia were generally significantly higher in the Pr+ treatment; Daphnia densities increased after the disappearance of Chaoborus in Pr-. Copepod losses to predation in the experiment may be compensated by higher fecundity, shorter egg development time, and lower pressure on egg-bearing females, resulting in a lower susceptibility to Chaoborus predation. The predation impact of water mite on microcrustaceans and rotifers in the experiment was negligible.  相似文献

Summary Transparency reduces the chances of detection of large planktonic animals by visual predators. An important constraint on the transparency of planktonic animals may be ingested food which could be seen through the body, thereby increasing the vulnerability of transparent zooplankton to visual predators. To test this hypothesis, we presented fed and un-fed Chaoborus larvae to juvenile coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch). Overall, the presence of prey in the gut of Chaoborus increased their probability of capture by 68%. Predation risks due to the visibility of ingested food increased in proportion to meal size: larvae with nearly full gut were captured about three times faster on the average than larvae which had little food in their gut. Although Chaoborus larvae may be able to reduce this increased predation risk by migrating downward to low light levels, this behavior would reduce feeding opportunities by removing the larvae from surface waters where prey density is generally high. In this way, visual predators may limit the growth and the maximum size that can be achieved by transparent animals.  相似文献

Juvenile Daphnia pulex form neckteeth in reponse to chemicals released by predatory Chaoborus crystallinus larvae. Formation of neckteeth is strongest in the second instar followed by the third instar, whereas only small neckteeth are found in the first and fourth instar of experimental clones. Predation experiments showed that body-size-dependent vulnerability of animals without neckteeth to fourth instar C. crystallinus larvae matched the pattern of neckteeth formation over the four juvenile instars. Predation experiments on D. pulex of the same clone with neckteeth showed that vulnerability to C. crystallinus predation is reduced, and that the induced protection is correlated with the degree of neckteeth formation. The pattern of neckteeth formation in successive instars is probably adaptive, and it can be concluded that neckteeth are formed to different degrees in successive instars as an evolutionary compromise to balance prediation risk and protective costs.  相似文献

Community level effects of predation by two invertebrate predators, the opossum shrimp (Neomysis intermedia), and the larva of the phantom midge (Chaoborus flavicans) were studied and compared. N. intermedia appeared abundantly in the shallow eutrophic Lake Kasumigaura and had a significant impact on the zooplankton community. The predation pressure by Neomysis was highest on cladocerans, followed by rotifers, and finally copepods. At high densities (maximum nearly 20 000 individuals m–2), Neomysis excluded almost all cladocerans, rotifers and copepods from the lake.Zooplankton communities were established in experimental ponds, into which C. flavicans was introduced. The predator's density was around 1 individual l–1, and was probably controled by cannibalism. Although Chaoborus larvae feed on various zooplankton species, their predation impact on zooplankton populations was markedly selective. They eliminated medium- and small-sized cladocerans and calanoid copepods from the ponds, but rotifers increased.Although the feeding selectivities of Neomysis and Chaoborus individuals were similar, the predation effects on zooplankton communities by the two predators were different.  相似文献

The cladoceran Daphnia ambigua was exposed to both the insecticide carbaryl and the kairomone released from the predator Chaoborus simultaneously, and its morphological changes were analyzed. Daphnia developed helmets in response to the kairomone, but not in response to carbaryl at low (sublethal) concentrations (1–3 µg 1–1). However, the carbaryl enhanced the development of high helmets and prolonged the maintenance period of the helmets over instars in the presence of the kairomone. These results suggest that sublethal concentrations of the insecticide alter predator-prey interactions by inducing helmet formation in Daphnia, which may reduce vulnerability of the Daphnia to predation.  相似文献

Fish predation was tested as a factor mediating the coexistence of Daphnia taxa in the shallow, hypertrophic Lake Blankaart. Naturally co-occurring populations of D. galeata and the hybrid D. galeata x cucullata were subjected to different levels of fish predation in in situ enclosures. In control enclosures without fish, the largest taxon D. galeata rapidly became dominant over the intermediate sized D. galeata x cucullata, mainly as a result of higher birth rates. In enclosures with fish, population densities of D. galeata dropped relative to D. galeata x cucullata, due to higher mortality rates. These results are in concordance with the `temporal hybrid superiority hypothesis', and can be explained by a higher vulnerability of the large and more conspicuous D. galeata to the size selective predation exerted by visually hunting planktivorous fishes. After approximately one month, however, population growth rates of D. galeata and D. galeata x cucullata in the enclosures with fish converged, due to a relative reduction in the mortality rate of D. galeata. This suggests that, in the presence of fish, D. galeata may co-exist with hybrids due to a decrease in its relative vulnerability to visual predation with time. Indeed, both D. galeata and the hybrid showed strong reductions in adult body size in the enclosures with fish, but this size reduction tended to be stronger in D. galeata than in D. galeata x cucullata. In addition, turbidity increased in the enclosures with fish and may additionally have reduced the relative advantage of D. galeata x cucullata with regard to mortality caused by visual predation.  相似文献

Both field observations and enclosure experiments show that juvenile copepods enter Daphnia brood cavities to feed on Daphnia eggs and embryos. The ability to perform such in vivo exploitation is reported for both cyclopoid and calanoid copepods. Copepodites of Acanthocyclops robustus (G.O. Sars) were found to eat eggs in brood cavities of D. magna, D. pulex and D. pulicaria in experimental enclosures rich in algae. Copepodites of Eudiaptomus gracilus (G.O. Sars) were found in brood cavities of D. hyalina in a mesotrophic lake. The copepods' intrusions into brood cavities caused dramatic declines in the clutch size of infested Daphnia, and this predation effect could easily be confused with the effect of severe food limitation.  相似文献

Morphological responses to the presence of predator info-chemicals havebeen described for many Daphnia (Cladocera) species, butD. galeata is generally considered to exhibit almost nomorphological changes that could increase its fitness under predation.Therefore, the aim of our study was to examine the nature and magnitude ofmorphological responses of D. galeata to their predatorsindetail and assess their potential role in decreasing the predation threat. Twoclones of Daphnia were exposed to predator info-chemicals(kairomones) from perch, a fish (Perca), and a phantommidge larvae (Chaoborus) an invertebrate, and a kairomone mixture fromboththese organisms. Laboratory life-table experiments were carried out and fiveparameters characterising the body shape of the daphnids were measured: helmetlength, head- and carapace width, eye diameter and body size. The last-namedthree parameters did not differ significantly between the clones or thetreatments. The differences found between the clones were significant for headwidth and helmet length, but only in combination with the treatment effects.Ourresults on genotype-dependent phenotypic plasticity indicated that, althoughphenotypic plasticity is present, the clonal composition of aDaphnia population can be altered by selection on themorphotype. This potential for a change in clonal frequencies is given by thedifferences measured between the two clones in head width and helmet length,altering the curvature of the Daphina body in response tokairomone presence.  相似文献

Summary Numerous adaptive predator-induced responses occurred when eight clones representing seven Daphnia (Crustacea: Cladocera) species were tested against three common predators: fourth instar larval phantom midge Chaoborus americanus, adult backswimmer Notonecta undulata, and small sunfish Lepomis macrochirus. The predators were confined within small mesh bags, suggesting that the signal for induction is chemical. The induced responses included longer tail spines, longer heads, smaller bodies, increased egg clutches, and decreased lipid reserves. Each Daphnia species responded to each of the three predators in a unique manner. Induced responses in the above characters showed no significant association. The induced morphological changes are generally consistent with current theories of what is an adaptive response for the various sizes of Daphnia exposed to tactile and visual predators. The abundance of induced responses in these experiments suggests that predator-induced responses are a widespread and ecologically important phenomenon of the freshwater zooplankton.  相似文献

We assayed a subtropical population of Daphnia ambigua for genetic variation using protein electrophoresis (9 loci) and quantitative genetics approaches (life history characters). Our goal was to obtain information about relative levels of variation in a subtropical population, and compare them with extensive previous studies in the temperate and arctic zones. The observed level of allozymic variation (H = 0.11) was consistent with those previously observed in other temperate zone Daphnia populations. However, variation for quantitative traits (heritability) was lower than typically observed in previously-studied temperate populations: estimates were not statistically different from zero. Because allozyme heterozygosity was consistent with previous temperate zone estimates, and the polymorphic allozyme loci did not depart from the expectations of Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, we concluded that a period of clonal selection was the most likely explanation for the low heritabilities observed. We do not conclude that this study provides evidence to suggest that subtropical populations harbor lower levels of genetic variation because of their location.  相似文献

The effects of chemicals released by fish and Chaoborus larvae on some life history traits in Daphnia pulex were studied in an in situ enclosure experiment. The mean size of Daphnia individuals was smaller in the presence of fish-released cues. Also the minimal size of an egg bearing female in the presence of fish exudates was smaller than in the population exposed to the chemicals released by Chaoborus larvae as well as in the control population. Fish-released chemicals caused the increase in clutch size in Daphnia. There were no statistically significant differences between the studied life history parameters of the control and Chaoborus treatments. Daphnia exposed to the presence of fish mature at smaller size and are quicker to release fewer and smaller neonates than females not exposed to this factor. Releasing neonates requires intensive movement, rendering the female very susceptible to fish predation. A reduction of this time may thereby be adaptive in the presence of fish. Since there is no correlation between the time needed to release a whole clutch and other life-history traits that show a shift in the presence of fish kairomone, the shortening of the time needed to release the young can itself be an adaptation, and not merely a consequence of change in other life-history traits.  相似文献
