Interspecific differences were found betweenLemur fulvus andLemur macaco in heterosexual pair-tests.L. fulvus showed more mutual grooming and were more active in exploration thanL. macaco. Erythrocyte galactose-1-phosphate uridyltransferase (Gal-1-PUT) was studied in four species of lemurs. Electrophoretic phenotypes of Lemur fulvusand Lemur macacowere indistinguishable and different from the phenotypes of Lemur cattaand Lemur variegatus,which were different from each other. Enzymatic activity of hemolysates was species specific, with that of Lemur variegatusabout twice that of either Lemur fulvusor Lemur macacoand almost three times that of Lemur catta.Only minor interspecific differences were demonstrated in pH optima and km for galactose-1-phosphate; however, thermal stability varied considerably with phenotype. Antibody inhibition studies indicated that differences in enzyme activity of hemolysates from these species are probably due to differences in enzyme concentration.  相似文献

A comparative ultrastructural study of the seminiferous epithelium was conducted during the mating and non-mating seasons of twoEulemur species:E. fulvus andE. macaco. The ultrastructure of the junctional complexes of the Sertoli cells, and the modifications in the spermatids during spermiogenesis are reported. A group of brown lemurs, Lemur fulvus, and a group of black lemurs, Lemur macaco, at the Duke University Center for the Study of Primate Biology and History have been observed to capture and eat birds and lizards. Although vertebrate prey are not unusual for many carnivorous prosimians, folivorous prosimians never have been observed to take vertebrates in the wild and rarely even insects.  相似文献

Scheffrahn et al. (1998a,b) aimed to outline the possible contributions of genetics to conservation biology: the determination of genetic variation of wild groups and its use as a guideline in breeding programs. Unfortunately, the amount of genetic variation within wild groups of nonhuman primates is rarely known. In particular, this observation holds for prosimians. Average heterozygosity is widely considered to be a good indicator of the magnitude of intraspecific variation. We provide some values of average heterozygosity of wild populations of Otolemur garnettii, Eulemur macaco macaco and E. m. flavifrons.  相似文献

Almost all mammals have brown or darkly‐pigmented eyes (irises), but among primates, there are some prominent blue‐eyed exceptions. The blue eyes of some humans and lemurs are a striking example of convergent evolution of a rare phenotype on distant branches of the primate tree. Recent work on humans indicates that blue eye color is associated with, and likely caused by, a single nucleotide polymorphism (rs12913832) in an intron of the gene HERC2, which likely regulates expression of the neighboring pigmentation gene OCA2. This raises the immediate question of whether blue eyes in lemurs might have a similar genetic basis. We addressed this by sequencing the homologous genetic region in the blue‐eyed black lemur (Eulemur macaco flavifrons; N = 4) and the closely‐related black lemur (Eulemur macaco macaco; N = 4), which has brown eyes. We then compared a 166‐bp segment corresponding to and flanking the human eye‐color‐associated region in these lemurs, as well as other primates (human, chimpanzee, orangutan, macaque, ring‐tailed lemur, mouse lemur). Aligned sequences indicated that this region is strongly conserved in both Eulemur macaco subspecies as well as the other primates (except blue‐eyed humans). Therefore, it is unlikely that this regulatory segment plays a major role in eye color differences among lemurs as it does in humans. Although convergent phenotypes can sometimes come about via the same or similar genetic changes occurring independently, this does not seem to be the case here, as we have shown that the genetic basis of blue eyes in lemurs differs from that of humans. Two species of lemur, Lemur macaco and Lemur coronatus, which do not hybridize in the wild, have produced a first, “definite” female hybrid in captivity. Its karyotype contains one haploid set from each parent. The analogy with the parental chromosomes is such that the pairing of the corresponding chromosomal arms leads to the formation of an open chain and a ring. The difficulty in obtaining hybrids between these two species could reflect the existence of a prezygotic barrier. The presence of multivalents, with probably a negative action on the gametogenesis, would introduce a postzygotic barrier.  相似文献

We used multidirectional chromosome painting with probes derived by bivariate fluorescence-activated flow sorting of chromosomes from human, black lemur (Eulemur macaco macaco) and tree shrew (Tupaia belangeri, order Scandentia) to better define the karyological relationship of tree shrews and primates. An assumed close relationship between tree shrews and primates also assists in the reconstruction of the ancestral primate karyotype taking the tree shrew as an ”outgroup” species. The results indicate that T. belangeri has a highly derived karyotype. Tandem fusions or fissions of chromosomal segments seem to be the predominant mechanism in the evolution of this tree shrew karyotype. The 22 human autosomal painting probes delineated 40 different segments, which is in the range found in most mammals analyzed by chromosome painting up to now. There were no reciprocal translocations that would distinguish the karyotype of the tree shrew from an assumed primitive primate karyotype. This karyotype would have included the chromosomal forms 1a, 1b, 2a, 2b, 3/21, 4–11, 12a/22a, 12b/22b, 13, 14/15, 16a, 16b, 17, 18, 19a, 19b, 20 and X and Y and had a diploid chromosome number of 2n=50. Of these forms, chromosomes 1a, 1b, 4, 8, 12a/22a, and 12b/22bmay be common derived characters that would link the tree shrew with primates. To define the exact phylogenetic relationships of the tree shrews and the genomic rearrangements that gave rise to the primates and eventually to humans further chromosome painting in Rodentia, Lagomorpha, Dermoptera and Chiroptera is needed, but many of the landmarks of genomic evolution are now known. Understanding ecological niche evolution over evolutionary timescales is crucial to elucidating the biogeographic history of organisms. Here, we used, for the first time, climate‐based ecological niche models (ENMs) to test hypotheses about ecological divergence and speciation processes between sister species pairs of lemurs (genus Eulemur) in Madagascar. We produced ENMs for eight species, all of which had significant validation support. Among the four sister species pairs, we found nonequivalent niches between sisters, varying degrees of niche overlap in ecological and geographic space, and support for multiple divergence processes. Specifically, three sister‐pair comparisons supported the null model that niches are no more divergent than the available background region. These findings are consistent with an allopatric speciation model, and for two sister pairs (E. collaris–E. cinereiceps and E. rufus–E. rufifrons), a riverine barrier has been previously proposed for driving allopatric speciation. However, for the fourth sister pair E. flavifrons–E. macaco, we found support for significant niche divergence, and consistent with their parapatric distribution on an ecotone and the lack of obvious geographic barriers, these findings most strongly support a parapatric model of speciation. These analyses thus suggest that various speciation processes have led to diversification among closely related Eulemur species.  相似文献

In previous studies we demonstrated that brown and black lemurs (Eulemur fulvus and E. macaco) showed self-control abilities under a reverse-reward contingency. They were able to significantly select the smaller quantity of food to be rewarded with the larger one and to generalize this ability when presented with two rewards that differed in quality. In the present study, previously trained subjects had to choose between graphic representations of two different quantities of food under the reverse-reward contingency. Three out of four subjects learned to associate a graphic representation of the reward with the corresponding quantity. Only one subject consistently selected the representation of the smaller quantity to be rewarded with the larger quantity of food and therefore showed abstraction as well as relative numerousness skills. Indeed, she was able to discriminate between representations of different quantities and to ordinate them. We discuss how primates mentally represent food quantities and how self-control is involved in foraging strategies.  相似文献

Analysis for genetic variation of insular and mainland populations ofEulemur macaco has revealed: (1) a different degree of genetic variation between populations; and (2) the phylogenetic relationships between groups, on the islands of Nosy-Be and Nosy-Komba, and in the Peninsula of Ambato (Madagascar). Eleven systems of blood proteins from 157 animals were used as genetic markers. The genetic variation was lower on the island of Nosy-Komba than in the mainland of Ambato. This is consistent with the expectation that genetic variation is lower on islands than on mainlands. In contrast, the genetic variation on the island of Nosy-Be was the highest of the three populations. This finding can best be explained by assuming that the sample of Nosy-Be consists of individuals of several small isolated groups, where genetic drift computation showed the population of Nosy-Be to be distinct, and the populations of Nosy-Komba and Ambato to be close within the same branch of the dendrogram. These findings give an insight into the population history of the island of Nosy-Komba, which might have been populated by mainland groups from Ambato.  相似文献

Across the past 20 years, captive reproduction has declined steeply in mongoose lemurs (Eulemur mongoz) and has been only moderately successful in black lemurs (E. macaco). At the same time, reproduction has been so successful in brown lemurs (E. fulvus) that contraception has been used since 1987 to limit captive numbers. No obvious cause for the differential reproductive success has been identified. Our experience with a pair of unrelated mongoose lemurs at the Philadelphia Zoological Garden suggested that they reproduced in only those years when they were caged in close proximity to another nonreproductive, full-sibling pair of mongoose lemurs. Examination of the worldwide pattern of captive reproduction by Eulemur species during the past two decades revealed that female black and mongoose lemurs housed in institutions with either additional conspecific males or additional conspecific pairs had a higher rate of reproduction than those maintained as an isolated pair. Black lemurs also had higher rates of reproduction when additional conspecific females were present. No similar pattern was found for brown lemurs or for two comparable mammals, the pudu (Pudu pudu) and the okapi (Okapia johnstoni). The evidence presented for the black and mongoose lemurs supports the existence of the Allee effect in these two species, namely, that reproduction is enhanced by the presence of conspecifics. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Lemurs, the living primates most distantly related to humans, demonstrate incredible diversity in behaviour, life history patterns and adaptive traits. Although many lemur species are endangered within their native Madagascar, there is no high‐quality genome assembly from this taxon, limiting population and conservation genetic studies. One critically endangered lemur is the blue‐eyed black lemur Eulemur flavifrons. This species is fixed for blue irises, a convergent trait that evolved at least four times in primates and was subject to positive selection in humans, where 5′ regulatory variation of OCA2 explains most of the brown/blue eye colour differences. We built a de novo genome assembly for E. flavifrons, providing the most complete lemur genome to date, and a high confidence consensus sequence for close sister species E. macaco, the (brown‐eyed) black lemur. From diversity and divergence patterns across the genomes, we estimated a recent split time of the two species (160 Kya) and temporal fluctuations in effective population sizes that accord with known environmental changes. By looking for regions of unusually low diversity, we identified potential signals of directional selection in E. flavifrons at MITF, a melanocyte development gene that regulates OCA2 and has previously been associated with variation in human iris colour, as well as at several other genes involved in melanin biosynthesis in mammals. Our study thus illustrates how whole‐genome sequencing of a few individuals can illuminate the demographic and selection history of nonmodel species.  相似文献

We investigated the feeding ecology of Eulemur macaco macaco in an old coastal secondary forest of northwestern Madagascar. We analyzed whether the local combination of introduced and native plant species could provide viable anthropic conditions for sustaining the black lemurs. Fruits (79 spp.) dominated the annual diet (>104 species from 50 families via observations ad libitum and use of a feeding frequency methods). Records from the early dry (mating) and late dry (birth) seasons show that a few major fruit species are staples in conjunction with a variety of other plant items in much lower proportions. We further estimated daily food intake and analyzed nutrient/antinutrient content in the diet during the birth season to evaluate the possibility that black lemurs undergo nutritional stress. They exhibited a high-energy input/low energy output foraging strategy then and had limited use of alternative resources such as leaves throughout the study period. We conclude that the potential for feeding flexibility is low because specialization on fruit results in protein requirements being achieved probably by a narrow margin. We hypothesize that patchy distribution of preferred cash-crop plants and indigenous species currently has a major limiting effect on population size through feeding competition.  相似文献

In the late 1960s, pathologists at the San Diego Zoo began to notice iron storage in the internal organs of captive lemurs. Hemosiderin was found in liver, spleen, lymph nodes, duodenum, and occasionally other organs. This was most pronounced in Lemur macaco, least pronounced in Lemur catta, with the severity in Lemur variegatus variegatus and Lemur variegatus ruber falling somewhere in between. Since 1968, 20 of 29 necropsied lemurs had hemosiderosis, three with hepatomas, three with cholangiomas, and one with a metastatic pheochromocytoma. In a preliminary attempt to compare their iron absorption, five black-and-white ruffed lemur (Lemur variegatus variegatus) weanlings and five rhesus monkey weanlings were each given ~500 nmol/kg FeCI3 (27.9 μg iron/kg) containing 5 μCi of 59Fe in 0.1 M HCl via a nasogastric tube. Retained 59Fe was measured by whole body gamma counting and found to be roughly the same in the two groups, possibly because insufficient quantities of iron were administered and/or excessive iron absorption becomes apparent only in older animals. Our conclusions were the following: (1) Hemosiderosis in lemurs is associated with tissue damage similar to that seen in humans with idiopathic hemochromatosis. (2) Because iron deposits occur both in parenchymal cells and reticuloendothelial cells, hemosiderosis in lemurs is probably not a model for idiopathic hemochromatosis in a pure sense.  相似文献

Studies of visual acuity in primates have shown that diurnal haplorhines have higher acuity (30–75 cycles per degree (c/deg)) than most other mammals. However, relatively little is known about visual acuity in non‐haplorhine primates, and published estimates are only available for four strepsirrhine genera (Microcebus, Otolemur, Galago, and Lemur). We present here the first measurements of visual acuity in a cathemeral strepsirrhine species, the blue‐eyed black lemur (Eulemur macaco flavifrons). Acuity in two subjects, a 3‐year‐old male and a 16‐year‐old female, was assessed behaviorally using a two‐alternative forced choice discrimination task. Visual stimuli consisted of high contrast square wave gratings of seven spatial frequencies. Acuity threshold was determined using a 70% correct response criterion. Results indicate a maximum visual acuity of 5.1 c/deg for the female (1718 trials) and 3.8 c/deg for the male (846 trials). These values for E. macaco are slightly lower than those reported for diurnal Lemur catta, and are generally comparable to those reported for nocturnal Microcebus murinus and Otolemur crassicaudatus. To examine ecological sources of variation in primate visual acuity, we also calculated maximum theoretical acuity for Cheirogaleus medius (2.8 c/deg) and Tarsius syrichta (8.9 c/deg) using published data on retinal ganglion cell density and eye morphology. These data suggest that visual acuity in primates may be influenced by activity pattern, diet, and phylogenetic history. In particular, the relatively high acuity of T. syrichta and Galago senegalensis suggests that visual predation may be an important selective factor favoring high visual acuity in primates. Am. J. A study of ten erythrocyte enzymes (PGM I, II, III, G6PD, 6PGD, GLO I, ADA, Est D, DIA, AcP, CA II, and AK) performed on 89 wild and 32 captiveEulemur macaco macaco shows that most systems are monomorphic except four (GLO I, CA II, 6PGD, and NADH DIA). The polymorphism of these markers allows us to make a satisfactory analysis of the variability on this species, especially on the view of comparing wild and captive populations, and shows that: (1) the population does not contain all phenotypes existing in the wild CAa, CAa + b, DIAIV, GLO IB − C, and PGDc are completely absent in all captive populations and DIAIII + IV is only present in three out of 32 animals; (2) in the Nosy-komba Island, the PGDc and DIAIV are absent and DIAIII + IV and GLO IB − C are only present in 1 out of 46 analyzed samples, showing that this population constitutes an isolate. The possibility to use these data for a strategy of Lemur conservation is discussed.  相似文献

The gonadal sexual patterns of three Atlantic/Caribbean Lythrypnus (L. nesiotes, L. phorellus, L. spilus) are described, based on histological examination, and compared with previously described sexual patterns of L. dalli and L. zebra, from the eastern Pacific. Overall, there was striking similarity in the sexual patterns of all the species; each exhibited simultaneous hermaphroditism with a high degree of variability in allocation to male tissue among individuals. Among the five species whose sexual patterns are described, at least three distinct sexual patterns were identified. Lythrypnus dalli has an allocation pattern distinct from the other species, with populations consisting of primarily pure females, strongly female-biased hermaphrodites and pure males. Lythrypnus nesiotes was also found to be distinct from the other species, consisting primarily of pure females and strongly female-biased hermaphrodites and male-biased individuals (mean allocation to male tissue = 75%). In contrast to L. dalli, L. nesiotes had no pure males. Indeed, no other species examined included pure males. L. phorellus, L. spilus and L. zebra had much more intermediate allocation patterns than either L. dalli or L. nesiotes. Most individuals were female biased (<10% male tissue), and there were significant numbers of individuals with intermediate allocation (10–90% male). L. zebra differed somewhat from L. phorellus and L. spilus in that more strongly male-biased individuals were common in the sample (i.e., ranging in allocation from 90 to 98% male); this difference was not statistically compelling. This marked variation in allocation among closely related species suggests Lythrypnus is a useful model system to explore factors affecting allocation. For example, models developed for simultaneous hermaphrodites and appropriate for Lythrypnus predict that pure sexed individuals will be more common at higher density (e.g., because mating success is more certain). The observed interspecific variation supports this prediction – both L. dalli and L. nesiotes occur at high density and have the most extreme allocation patterns, whereas L. phorellus, L. spilus, and L. zebra occur at lower density and have more intermediate allocation patterns.  相似文献

The identification of the vocal repertoire of a species represents a crucial prerequisite for a correct interpretation of animal behavior. Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) have been widely used in behavioral sciences, and today are considered a valuable classification tool for reducing the level of subjectivity and allowing replicable results across different studies. However, to date, no studies have applied this tool to nonhuman primate vocalizations. Here, we apply for the first time ANNs, to discriminate the vocal repertoire in a primate species, Eulemur macaco macaco. We designed an automatic procedure to extract both spectral and temporal features from signals, and performed a comparative analysis between a supervised Multilayer Perceptron and two statistical approaches commonly used in primatology (Discriminant Function Analysis and Cluster Analysis), in order to explore pros and cons of these methods in bioacoustic classification. Our results show that ANNs were able to recognize all seven vocal categories previously described (92.5–95.6%) and perform better than either statistical analysis (76.1–88.4%). The results show that ANNs can provide an effective and robust method for automatic classification also in primates, suggesting that neural models can represent a valuable tool to contribute to a better understanding of primate vocal communication.
