Gut contents and feeding activity of five dominant Antarctic copepods (Calanus propinquus, Calanoides acutus, Rhincalanus gigas, Metridia gerlachei and Microcalanus pygmaeus) were studied from samples collected during several cruises of the RV Polarstern to the eastern Weddell Sea. In summer, feeding activity, estimated as percentage of copepods with food in the guts, was high in all the species, and diatoms dominated all gut contents. In winter, C. acutus was trophically inactive, and C. propinquus and R. gigas considerably decreased their feeding activity, while a decrease in feeding of M. gerlachei and M. pygmaeus was less pronounced. Unidentified mass dominated gut contents in winter, supplemented by phytoplankton and protozoans. Prior to the spring bloom, feeding activity of C. acutus was low, with unidentified food predominating, while carnivory was important in actively feeding C. propinquus. Rhincalanus gigas tended to be more carnivorous than C. acutus, however with less feeding activity than C. propinquus. Seasonal changes in feeding patterns are discussed.  相似文献

Two species of freshwater cyclopoid copepods, Cyclops scutifer Sars and Mesocyclops leuckarti (Claus), with different ecological requirements, coexist in three humic ponds near the timberline in boreal forests in south-central Norway. The life cycle in both species is basically regulated by complete depletion of oxygen during the long winter. There is a short period of reproduction in spring followed by a rapid development during summer and autumn to advanced instars, capable of diapause when oxygen depletion starts in early winter. Both species have an exclusive 1-yr cycle.The long winter under anoxic conditions is passed in diapause as large copepodids (late developmental instars) with usually no individuals left in the plankton.Even if co-occurring in the same habitats with similar life cycles, there is a temporal and spatial segregation.  相似文献

Previous analyses of the life cycles and distributions of large antarctic copepods have concluded that competitive exclusion is the most important causal factor. It has been suggested that these species have asynchronous life cycles, their reproduction differing in time as a result of their interspecific interaction. I have analyzed these ideas by studying zooplankton samples collected by six expeditions in the Atlantic sector of the Antarctic ocean between 1963 and 1985. The results show no evidence of asynchronism among the species analyzed.   Misophrioid copepods are reported for the first time from Antarctic waters. A species of each of the genera Misophriopsis and Misophriella is described from hyperbenthic layers of the continental shelf of the eastern Weddell Sea. The genus Misophria is also reported from these waters. Misophriopsis australis sp. nov. is the fifth representative of this widely distributed genus, previously reported from the North Atlantic, the China Sea, and both NW and NE quadrants of the Pacific Ocean. Misophriella schminkei sp. nov. is the second representative of the genus, known to date only from a single female caught in North Atlantic bathyal depths. Traces of subdivisions on antennary exopodal segments of the latter species suggest that the first segment may be a triple segment, while the second and terminal segments may be double segments. In addition, the mandibular exopod of this taxon indicates that a six-segmented ramus with setal formula 0, 1, 1, 1, 1, 2 may represent the ground pattern in Copepoda. The presence of parts of a cyclopinid copepod in the gut of M. schminkei sp. nov. indicates that this species may be carnivorous. Nymphs of Rhithrogena iridina, Baetis alpinusand Baetis melanonyx were collected in theWoosatka and Terebowiec streams; Bieszczady NationalPark, southeastern Poland. The streams have differentenvironmental conditions. The life cycles of Rhithrogena iridina in the Woosatka and theTerebowiec streams were of the univoltine winter type.In the Woosatka (Station 1) this species had aunivoltine life cycle with one cohort. In theTerebowiec (Station 2), R. iridina had aunivoltine life cycle with two cohorts – winter andsummer. The development of Baetis alpinus tookvarious courses depending on environmental conditions.At the lower station (Woosatka), where watertemperature reached higher values and the stream bedis less shady, the species had a winter-summer cyclewith two generations a year. At the higher station,(Terebowiec) it likely had a winter cycle with one ortwo generations. Baetis melanonyx had summercycles with one generation at both stations.  相似文献

Egg production rates in wild populations of Acartia clausi and Centropages typicus, sampled biweekly in the Gulf of Naples from October 1985 to July 1987, showed marked seasonal fluctuations with maximum values in early spring that proceeded the annual maxima for adult female densities in summer. A positive correlation between chlorophyll a concentrations and egg production was evident only during the early spring phytoplankton bloom. A strong diminution in egg deposition occurred later in spring and continued throughout the summer notwithstanding high chlorophyll concentrations. In winter, when population abundances for adult females were lowest, egg production rates were always higher than in summer. Differences in egg production rates coincided with pronounced morphological changes between summer and winter populations of both species. The most striking of these changes consisted, in winter, in the presence of a dark brown fluid-like mass of granular material that seemed to freely bathe the gonads. The presence of this substance only during periods of elevated egg production suggests that it may enhance egg production rates when the adult population reaches minimum annual levels. Such a mechanism of self-regulation may operate to dampen the effects of environmental variability thereby contributing to maintain a conservative structure in coastal copepod communities.  相似文献

The abundance of small faecal pellets is high in marine waters. Little is known, however, about the processes governing their production and fate in the water column. We investigated faecal pellet production and flux in relation to the phytoplankton and copepod assemblages present in Ellis Fjord, Antarctica. Results show that the phytoplankton community shifted from a dominance of diatoms to that of a cryptomonad species during late January. This coincided with an increase in abundance of the small copepods Paralabidocera antarctica and Oithona similis, although Oncaea curvata was still the dominant species. The mean faecal pellet flux was 9943 pellets m–2 d–1. Only 37% of the faecal pellet flux at 5 m sedimented to 10 m depth, 15% to 20 m, and 12% to 40 m depth. Our results suggest that recycling of faecal pellets by copepods contributes to this decreased flux with increasing depth, which concurs with results from large scale oceanic studies. Additionally, we propose that the summer ice melt changes the physical characteristics of the water column and the phytoplankton species abundance and distribution; both of which potentially impact on the distribution and abundance of copepods, thereby regulating faecal pellet flux.  相似文献

Current evolutionary models for amphibian life cycles reflect tradeoffs in size-specific growth and mortality rates between the aquatic and terrestrial stages. A limitation of these models is that they do not incorporate evolutionary phenomena that are associated with metapopulation structure. In this work I address components of the evolution of complex life cycles (CLCs) that are tied to the metapopulation dynamics of amphibians that use seasonal wetlands that vary in hydroperiod. In particular, I describe how selection for the minimum length of the larval period affects metapopulation viability and the selection/migration equilibrium. Selection to increase the minimum length of the larval period functionally reduces the number of viable breeding sites on the landscape, increases the average distance between neighboring sites, and increases the risk of metapopulation extinction. Within a metapopulation, asymmetric gene flow between populations that are adapted to different hydroperiods tends to swamp local selection for long larval periods at sites with long hydroperiods. The evolutionary stability of CLCs of many species with metapopulation structure may reflect the fact that extremely small metamorphs cannot survive on land, while lineages with long larval periods incur a high risk of metapopulation extinction. I encourage theorists to more carefully consider how life history traits and metapopulation viability are related for these and other taxa.  相似文献

Evolution and biodiversity of Antarctic organisms: a molecular perspective   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The Antarctic biota is highly endemic, and the diversity and abundance of taxonomic groups differ from elsewhere in the world. Such characteristics have resulted from evolution in isolation in an increasingly extreme environment over the last 100 Myr. Studies on Antarctic species represent some of the best examples of natural selection at the molecular, structural and physiological levels. Analyses of molecular genetics data are consistent with the diversity and distribution of marine and terrestrial taxa having been strongly influenced by geological and climatic cooling events over the last 70 Myr. Such events have resulted in vicariance driven by continental drift and thermal isolation of the Antarctic, and in pulses of species range contraction into refugia and subsequent expansion and secondary contact of genetically distinct populations or sister species during cycles of glaciation. Limited habitat availability has played a major role in structuring populations of species both in the past and in the present day. For these reasons, despite the apparent simplicity or homogeneity of Antarctic terrestrial and marine environments, populations of species are often geographically structured into genetically distinct lineages. In some cases, genetic studies have revealed that species defined by morphological characters are complexes of cryptic or sibling species. Climate change will cause changes in the distribution of many Antarctic and sub-Antarctic species through affecting population-level processes such as life history and dispersal.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. The seasonal activity patterns of adults and larvae, and the seasonal development of female gonads showed that Curubus glabrafus Payk. and Curubus violaceus L. living in a subalpine habitat are spring (summer) breeders with biennial life cycles.
2. As a rule, the adults and third stage larvae hibernate, but C.glubrutus at least can hibernate also at the second larval stage, particularly in years in which unfavourable climatic conditions in the spring delay breeding.

The foraging strategy of many animals is thought to be determined by their past experiences. However, few empirical studies have investigated whether this is true in diving animals. We recorded three-dimensional movements and mouth-opening events from three Antarctic fur seals during their foraging trips to examine how they adapt their behaviour based on past experience—continuing to search for prey in the same area or moving to search in a different place. Each dive cycle was divided into a transit phase and a feeding phase. The linear horizontal distance travelled after feeding phases in each dive was affected by the mouth-opening rate during the previous 244 s, which typically covered two to three dive cycles. The linear distance travelled tended to be shorter when the mouth-opening rate in the previous 244 s was higher, i.e. seals tended to stay in the same areas with high prey-encounter rates. These results indicate that Antarctic fur seals follow decision-making strategies based on the past foraging experience over time periods longer than the immediately preceding dive.  相似文献

The effect of solar ultraviolet radiation on the survival rate of Antarctic zooplankton was examined in February–March in 2002. We investigated survival rate of calyptopis larvae of Euphausia superba and late copepodite stages (IV and V) of large dominant calanoid species, Calanoides acutus and Calanus propinquus reared in quartz jars with three different radiation regimes (total radiation, exclusion of UVB, exclusion of UVA and UVB) and a dark control. The survival rates of the krill larvae decreased after 3 days from start of the experiment, being below 50% at 4 days in the treatments with total radiation and exclusion of UVB, although most individuals could survive until the end of the experiments in the treatments with exclusion of both UVA and UVB and dark control. The calanoid juveniles showed almost same pattern of survival curves as the krill larvae did, but survived slightly longer. Although >10% of surface UVA radiation at 340 and 380 nm penetrated down to 30 m, both C. acutus and C. propinquus were mostly distributed above 20 m. Surface swarm of the krill larvae can be often recognized in the previous studies. These results suggest that not only solar UVB but also UVA radiation potentially lower the survival rate of Antarctic zooplankton at depth less than 20 m.  相似文献

Populations of the copepod Cyclops vicinus in two Danish lakes differed in their life cycles. In Lake Væng C. vicinus was absent during summer, whereas in Lake Søbygård it continued producing distinct cohorts throughout summer. A comparison between the lakes showed that in the lake where C. vicinus was absent during summer, food limitation generally existed. In contrast, abundance of C. vicinus during summer in Lake Søbygård always coincided with available resources sufficient for the whole life cycle. Thus, summer diapause of C. vicinus is suggested to be a strategy to avoid food limitation. Avoidance of fish predation does not seem substantially to influence life cycles.  相似文献

North American field crickets (genus Gryllus) exhibit a diversity of life cycles, habitat associations, and calling songs. However, patterns of evolution for these ecological and behavioral traits remain uncertain in the absence of a robust phylogenetic framework. Analyses of morphological variation have provided few clues about species relationships in the genus Gryllus. Here we use comparisons of mitochondrial DNA restriction site maps for 29 individuals representing 11 species (including potential outgroups) to examine relationships among eastern North American field crickets. Initially chosen as likely outgroup taxa, the two European species of Gryllus do not obviously fall outside of an exclusively North American clade and (based on amount of sequence divergence) appear to have diverged from North American lineages at about the same time that major North American lineages diverged from each other. The egg-overwintering crickets comprise a strongly supported monophyletic group, but relationships among these three closely related species cannot be resolved. The mtDNA data are consistent with a single origin of egg diapause and do not support a model of recent life cycle divergence and allochronic speciation for Gryllus pennsylvanicus and G. veletis. The two crickets are not sister species, despite remarkable similarity in morphology, habitat, and calling song. This conclusion is consistent with published data on allozyme variation in North American field crickets. The habitat associations of eastern North American field crickets have been labile, but calling songs sometimes have remained virtually unchanged across multiple speciation events.  相似文献

During January and February of 2002 and 2003, we studied the diet of the Antarctic Tern Sterna vittata gaini at two colonies in Nelson Island, South Shetland Islands, by identifying the prey fed to chicks by breeders. The fish Notothenia coriiceps was the main prey in both seasons, followed by the myctophid Electrona antarctica, Antarctic krill Euphausia superba and gammarid amphipods. The contribution of fish to the diet increased as chicks grew older. Fish and amphipods were brought to chicks during the day, whereas adults brought Antarctic krill at sunrise and sunset. Both the duration of the feeding trips and the number of trips per foraging bout varied according to the type of prey caught. Preliminary information suggests that, among other causes, the foraging strategy is strongly influenced by the predation pressure of skuas on chicks. Results are compared with the only two previous study on the diet of the Antarctic Tern at the South Shetland Islands.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. Records of parasitism from the field and host choice experiments suggest that most parasitoids of syrphids are monophagous. A few are oligophagous.
2. To elicit egg release, females require a stimulus from the host haemolymph. Differential response to haemolymph cues by females may account for the observed pattern of host relations.
3. Differences in host ranges and timing of female flight periods probably characterize most of the parasitoids studied.
4. In one case of two monophagous parasitoids, Diplazon pectoratorius (Thunberg) and Syrphophilus tricinctorius (Thunberg) attacking the same host Syrphus ribesii (L.) no partitioning was found. Stricinctorius is, however, a superior intrinsic competitor.  相似文献

The simultaneous operation of paired, opposing reactions (substrate cycles) or parallel reactions (dual pathways) with seeming wastage of ATP is widespread in cellular metabolism. Analysis of such “futile” pathways has hitherto been limited to loci with only two or three interconnecting fluxes. We introduce here a method that allows straightforward analysis of more complex systems. The method involves the linear superposition of “fundamental” modes, one or more of which may be energetically wasteful. Decomposition of a flux pattern into such modes allows computation of the amount of free energy “wasted” at any locus. Appropriate normalizations of energy wastage yield a number of indices useful for assessing the energetic impact of futile pathways on the cell and for comparing the degree of regulation of substrate cycles or dual pathways under different metabolic conditions. This approach is applied to steady-state flux data obtained in the protozoanTetrahymena pyriformis and in isolated rat hepatocytes under a variety of conditions.  相似文献

Zooplankton communities from 499 lakes were examined for calanoid copepod species. Limnocalanus macrurus and Senecella calaloides are confined to Lakes Michigan, Superior and one inland lake each. Eurytemora affinis has recently become established in the coastal waters of Lakes Michigan and Superior. Epischura lacustris is present in the summer plankton of a wide variety of lake types. Aglaodiaptomus leptopus is sensitive to fish predation and confined to small lakes without fish. Leptodiaptomus ashlandi is restricted to Lakes Michigan and Superior, but L. sicilis is also found in some inland lakes. Leptodiaptomus minutus is a boreal species found mostly in lakes of the far north. Skistodiaptomus oregonensis is the most commonly occurring calanoid and seems well adapted to lakes of the meso-to low eutrophic types. Skistodiaptomus pallidus is also generally distributed throughout the state, but less common than oregonensis and adapted to more eutrophic lakes. Leptodiaptomus siciloides and A. clavipes are western species, adapted to eutrophic lakes, which are expanding their ranges eastward, aided by cultural eutrophication.  相似文献

The menstrual cycles of a captive group of patas monkeys were followed for 15 months by taking vaginal smears and lavages three times a week. Without an adult male in the group, menstrual cycles still showed the expected qualitative changes previously associated with the onset and with the end of a mating period. The addition of an adult male to the female group, once mating season cycles were evident, did not result in further changes in erythrocytes or sediment levels in vaginal samples or cycle regularity. Menstrual-cycle onsets for related females were significantly more synchronized than onsets for unrelated females. Preliminary observations on adult male patas housed separately from the females indicate that they too undergo seasonal changes in physiology and behavior.  相似文献

Megacyclops viridis (Jurine), Macrocyclops albidus (Jurine), and Acanthocyclops vernalis (Fischer) were raised in the laboratory at six temperatures (5, 8, 10, 12, 15 and 20°) and fed a mixture of ciliates (Paramecium caudatum and Colpidium campylum). Data were taken on clutch size, embryonic development time, interclutch period, time to first clutch, sex ratio and longevity.Clutch size, time to first clutch, embryonic development time, interclutch period and longevity are inversely related to temperature.
