Filtration models make several predictions concerning the distribution of crinoids among benthic habitats: (1) generally, higher energy shoreward settings should contain crinoid assemblages dominated by taxa with dense mesh filtration fans; (2) generally, lower energy offshore settings should be dominated by crinoids with open mesh filtration fans; (3) diversity should be highest in nearshore settings, which generally contain low energy microhabitats within high energy settings where both dense fan and open fan forms can co-occur, whereas offshore assemblages should be dominated by open fan taxa; thus, open fan forms should be more eurytopic than dense fan forms. Also, previous empirical models for crinoid distribution patterns note that nearshore assemblages are dominated by large forms whereas offshore assemblages are dominated by small forms. Filtration fan morphology and body size interact significantly to determine how and where crinoids feed and thus are used here as criteria for distinguishing late Paleozoic crinoid guilds. The distribution patterns of crinoid taxa and guilds among the benthic paleoenvironments of the Upper Pennsylvanian (Missourian) Stanton Formation were used to test the predictions of the filtration models.

The results of quantitative analyses show that large, dense fan crinoids are significantly more abundant in shoreward assemblages than smaller, open fan crinoids, which are more abundant in offshore assemblages; these results are consistent with the aforementioned models. However, diversity patterns are not consistent with the filtration models, indicating that mid-depth and aerobic offshore assemblages are more taxonomically and trophically diverse than nearshore and dysaerobic offshore assemblages, ostensibly due to the overlapping ranges of characteristically nearshore and offshore taxa. Analysis of guild distribution patterns also indicates some contradictions to predicted patterns of stenotopy and eurytopy, indicating additional complexities to late Paleozoic crinoid paleoecology.

Five recurrent crinoid assemblages, or biofacies, have been identified from the Stanton Formation of midcontinent North America. The guild structure and diversity of these biofacies are characterized here as: (1) a moderate diversity nearshore biofacies dominated by large calyx, dense fan guilds; (2) a high diversity midshelf biofacies characterized by equitable contributions of many taxa and guilds; (3) a moderate diversity offshore biofacies dominated by non-pinnulate and small calyx, open fan pinnulate guilds; (4) a low diversity offshore dysaerobic biofacies dominated by small calyx pinnulate guilds; (5) a depauperate offshore biofacies dominated by a unique stalkless species, Paragassizocrinus tarri. Except for Biofacies 5, the number of guilds appears to increase offshore; however, the equitability of taxa among and within the guilds generally decreases offshore. This pattern indicates that the heterogeneity of resources, or the recognition by taxa of different classes of resources, as reflected by the variety of functional types, increased from nearshore to offshore, but that the abundance or accessibility of these resources, and/or the relaxation of competition within guilds, increased from offshore to nearshore.  相似文献

The general shape of test, spine and tubercle morphologies, and ambulacral pore characteristics ofRhabdocidaris nobilis (Münster 1826) andRhabdocidaris reginae n. sp. from the Upper Jurassic are interpreted in functional terms. Results are compared with an independent sedimentological and palaeoecological analysis of the host sediments. The morphological interpretation ofRhabdocidaris nobilis suggests a low energy, possibly partly dysaerobic, firmground setting as is evidenced by (1) the occurrence of slit-like C isopores and (2) tubercles with a broad muscle attachment area indicating strong, motile stalking spines. The morphological interpretation ofRhabdocidaris reginae suggests principally the same mode of life. However, the sedimentological and palaeoecological analysis of the host sediments suggest quite a different environment forRhabdocidaris reginae relative toRhabdocidaris nobilis. This phenomenon can be explained by the physiological characteristics of echinoids.  相似文献

喀斯特天坑作为独特的宏大地表负地形,其坑底生境与外界环境相互独立,呈现出独特的植物群落格局及特征.本研究选取云南沾益天坑群中可进入性较强的中度退化天坑--巴家陷塘为对象,筛选出重要值大于1的优势种,结合总体关联性分析、χ2检验、AC联结系数及Spearman秩相关系数对巴家陷塘退化天坑植物群落中11种优势种的种间关联性和相关性进行研究.结果表明: 巴家陷塘退化天坑植物群落种间联结指数VR=1.377>1,总体呈显著正关联,但正负关联差异较大,阳生型植物和阴生型植物呈极显著负关联,现阶段仍具有独立的分布格局,但呈逐渐趋于稳定的趋势;Spearman分析中种间正相关对数(26对)少于种间负相关对数(29对),结合天坑微环境的差异,将退化天坑的优势物种划分为3个生态种组,群落总体呈现出一定的圈层分布规律.  相似文献

Low-diversity fossil assemblages interpreted as representing dysaerobic communities are common in the Phanerozoic rock record, and those composed of a single species have particular utility for recognizing the lowest bottom-water oxygen levels. An unusually high-diversity of clades including three rhynchonelliform, two linguliform, and one bivalve species occur in monospecific assemblages within Middle and Upper Devonian black shales of New York State. These six taxa are interpreted to be adapted to extremely reduced bottom-water oxygen levels as inferred from detailed sedimentological data and their repeated monospecific occurrence; however these groups represent two distinct ecologies. Three of these taxa are restricted to sediments deposited under the lowest dysaerobic conditions, while the other three taxa, unlike other fossils characteristic of reduced-oxygen levels, also occur in and are even dominant in high-diversity assemblages. The rhynchonellid brachiopod Eumetabolotoechia multicostata is the most abundant taxon within these units and has a remarkable ecological range as dominant from the lowest dysaerobic zone to near-normal marine oxygen levels. These Devonian groups, when present in monospecific assemblages, have utility for characterizing the lowest dysaerobic zone where trace fossil assemblages, most commonly used to describe these low-oxygen depositional settings, are absent or poorly developed.  相似文献

A moderately diverse brachiopod and trilobite assemblage, the Leangella–Dalmanitina (Songxites) Assemblage, occurs in the upper Yankou Formation (Hirnantian, probably equivalent to the Normalograptus persculptus Biozone) at Shizi Hill, Yuhang, west of Hangzhou, northern Zhejiang, E China. The brachiopods are rare, characterised by minute, thin shells with very small body cavities, preserved in mudstones as moulds. They may have inhabited quiet, deep-water and dysaerobic slope environments with low levels of nutrients, equivalent to Benthic Assemblage 5. Most genera were adapted for life in deep water and either remained there or alternatively migrated into relatively shallower habitats to evade perturbations during the first phase of the end Ordovician extinctions. The slope environments were recolonised from outer shelf and upper slope communities during the early Hirnantian, but isolated biotas may also have survived in deeper-water habitats by reducing their population size and diversity during the crisis. The Leangella–Dalmanitina (Songxites) Assemblage provides an unique Hirnantian window through which we can monitor the changes in the deep-water biofacies following the first phase of the extinctions. Significantly, parts of the deep water marine environment may have survived intact, the end Ordovician extinctions.  相似文献

Microborings of endolithic organisms (e.g. algae, fungi) provide valuable indicators of paleoenvironments. The present study documents the distribution of microborings in fossil skeletal substrates from a spectrum of shelf to basinal facies in the Middle Devonian of New York. Endolithic boring in brachiopod shells and corals were prepared using special embedding-casting method and were examined and photographed with SEM. About 13 distinct types of microborings were discovered, presumably produced by microorganisms (pro- and eukaryotic), sponges, bryozoans and worms. Brachiopod holdfast etchings are reported for the first time from Paleozoic rocks. Microborings are non-randomly distributed among Middle Devonian facies. The highest diversity and abundance of borings occurs in diverse brachiopod and coral-bearing calcareous mudstones; which appear to represent shallow, well-aerated and low turbidity environments. Microboring diversity and frequency decreases markedly into mudstones and siltstones recording higher turbidity as well as into dark gray to black basinal shale facies. 'Leiorhynchus' brachiopods from probable deeper water, dysaerobic environments display very low diversity of micro-boring assemblages. They include brachiopod pedicle borings and one endolith which shows similarities to a modem cyanobacterium. If the latter is correctly identified, it brackets all of the studied facies within the photic zone.  相似文献

Emsian (upper Lower Devonian) limestones exposed on Kasaan, Round, and Wadleigh Islands in southeastern Alaska are part of an allochthonous suitc of island are deposits preserved within the accrctionary Alexander Terrane. Ten benthic marine communities, including several new brachiopod associations, are defined on the basis of field data correlated with a cluster analysis. Biologic and sedimentologic evidence is integrated with community group assignments in order to substantiate the paleoecology and evolutionary history of each community. These faunas were adapted to a spectrum of quiet and rough water habitats, including restricted, shallow subtidal areas nearshore, offshore biostromal banks, and open and restricted portions of a lagoon or shelf. Comparisons with coeval assemblages from the Cordillera and elsewhere reveal that these communities are unique to southeastern Alaska. Their origin within an early Paleozoic island are appears to have led to biogeographic isolation from other parts of the Cordillera and the development of a distinct biota at a site offshorc from the ancient continental margin. ▭ Emsian, paleocommunities, community groups, cluster analysis, Alexander Terrane.  相似文献

A marine Cretaceous succession (Barremian–Albian) of a cored borehole (BGS 81/40), located in the Central North Sea Basin, has been examined with respect to its planktic and benthic foraminiferal content, as well as for calcareous nannofossils. The distribution patterns of foraminifera and calcareous nannofossils allow for a two fold division of the investigated interval. (1) The Barremian–earliest Aptian interval, which reflects a marine, temporary restricted setting. This is indicated by sporadic occurrences of planktic foraminifera with very rare planispiral forms suggesting short-term connections of the Boreal and Tethyan Realms. The benthic foraminiferal assemblages indicate aerobic, sometimes dysaerobic bottom-water conditions. High abundances of nannoconids in the Barremian suggest enhanced stratification and/or warm, oligotrophic surface water. (2) The late Aptian–early Albian interval, which was characterised by an open-oceanic environment with cool and aerobic surface water conditions. Planktic foraminifera are more abundant and diverse than in the lower interval. Trochospiral hedbergellids dominate the foraminiferal assemblages. The episodic occurrences of planispiral, clavate and trochospiral-flattened planktic morphotypes indicate the existence of a seaway between the Boreal and the Tethyan Realms. Aerobic to dysaerobic bottom-water conditions are suggested by the composition of the benthic foraminiferal assemblages. High abundances of cool-water taxa within the calcareous nannofossil assemblages indicate a cooling trend across the latest Aptian and earliest Albian.  相似文献

The 15-year experience of orbital station Mir service demonstrated that specifically modified space vehicle environments allows for the consideration of spaceship habitats as a certain ecological niche of microbial community development and functioning, which was formed from the organisms of different physiological and taxonomical groups. The base unit of the orbital station (OS) Mir was launched on February 20, 1986, and on March 13 the first crew arrived to it. From that moment a unique microbiocenosis started forming in the closed environment of the space station, and vital activity of the microorganisms continued for the next 15 years in a specifically changed environment, in conditions of continuous influence of a set of factors intrinsic to space flight. A total of 234 species of bacteria and fungi were found onboard orbital station Mir, among which microorganisms capable of resident colonization of the environment of space objects as a unique anthropotechnological niche were revealed. In such conditions the evolution of microflora is followed by the rise of medical and technical risks that can affect both sanitary-microbiological conditions of the environment and the safety and reliability characteristics of space equipment. The latter is caused by progressing biological damage to the structural materials. The microbial loading dynamic does not have linearly progressing character, but it is a wavy process of alternation of the microflora activation and stabilization phases; on this background there is a change of the dominating species by quantity and prevalence. The accumulated data is evidence of the necessity of the constant control of the microbial environmental factors to maintain their sanitary and microbiological optimum condition and to prevent the processes of constructional materials biodestruction.  相似文献

Nearshore communities in Paleozoic epeiric seas occur in two distinct lateral patterns which parallel shorelines — an expanded pattern of five and a compressed pattern of three laterally adjacent communities. The two community patterns are correlated with two distinct environmental models which are a product of local tectonics. Model 1 (tectonically stable) develops in low slope transgressing epeiric seas. Model 2 (tectonically active) develops in high slope prograding epeiric seas commonly with abundant terrigenous clastic influx. Environmental variables and organic evolution change community constituents, but the broad community patterns recur at least through the early and middle Paleozoic.  相似文献

土壤微生物在生态系统中具有重要的生态功能,研究青藏高原高寒草甸的土壤原核生物群落组成及其主要影响因子,对揭示青藏高原独特的微生物地理区系和预测全球环境变化的影响有重要意义。利用Illumina Miseq高通量测序技术,结合分子生态网络,对青藏高原高寒沼泽化草甸和高寒草甸的土壤原核生物的群落组成特征进行了分析。结果共检测到23145个OTUs,可分为2个古细菌类群和33个已知的细菌类群;其中变形菌门、酸杆菌门、放线菌门和拟杆菌门为土壤的优势菌群,相对丰度累计超过79%;高寒草甸原核生物的多样性高于高寒沼泽化草甸,两种草甸类型原核生物群落特征具有显著差异性(P0.001)。分子生态网络分析表明,高寒草甸网络具有较长的平均路径距离和较高的模块性,使其比高寒沼泽化草甸网络更能抵抗外界环境变化,在应对气候变化时具有更高的稳定性;典范对应分析(CCA)和分子生态网络的分析结果均表明,土壤p H值是影响土壤原核生物群落特征的主要影响因子。综上所述,土壤微生物群落的组成变化对于评估其对全球气候变化的响应具有重要的指示作用,土壤原核生物群落特征在不同的高寒草甸土壤中具有显著差异,了解其变化规律和影响因子,能为高寒草甸生态系统的适应性管理和应对气候变化提供理论依据。  相似文献

The present study investigates the zooplankton community dynamics and the abiotic environment in the eutrophic Lake Lysimachia (western Greece). The lake is considered to be recovering from eutrophication after the termination of an urban sewage inflow in 2000, and its waters are replenished constantly from the nearby oligotrophic Lake Trichonis. The results show that, although a decrease in nutrient concentrations was observed compared to the past, the lake still has eutrophic characteristics. This was reflected in the zooplankton community which is typical of those found in eutrophic lakes where rotifers prevail. Similarities among this lake and other nearby lakes were found considering the zooplankton community composition and seasonal variation. However, Lake Lysimachia is inhabited also by a number of different and even unique species (e.g., Moina micrura), suggesting that this ecosystem may be an important biodiversity refuge. Most of the zooplankton species were correlated with water temperature and, to a lesser extent, eutrophication key-water quality variables. Although there are few available data on the zooplankton of the lake, the abundance and composition of the community presenting characteristics indicative of intermediate trophic conditions and suggesting that the lake is probably under a kind of “biological” recovery.  相似文献

The highly fossiliferous Virgilian (Upper Pennsylvanian) shales of the Kinney Brick Company quarry near Albuquerque, New Mexico, contain a diversified flora dominated by walchian conifers and neuropterid pteridosperms. Its other components include a specimen of Telangiopsis sp. and abundant material of Sphenopteridium manzanitanum, n. sp., a highly variable foliar form. Both genera are characteristically restricted to the Upper Mississippian, with the exception of one basal Pennsylvanian occurrence. Their occurrence together in the Kinney sediments and their possession in common of distinctive surficial ornamentation suggest that they represent dissociated parts of Diplopteridium, a very rare European Lower Carboniferous taxon. Other associated plants show later Paleozoic or even Early Mesozoic characteristics, which, together with the Mississippian elements, distinguish the Kinney site as paleobotanically unique.  相似文献

The trilobite faunas found in carbonate buildups throughout much of the Paleozoic are remarkably similar in both composition and general morphological characteristics. This is primarily the result of the domination of these faunas by a limited number of trilobite families which are long-ranging in the buildup environment. Illaenids are the dominant trilobites in Ordovician-Devonian buildups and are generally accompanied by members of the Lichidae and Cheiruridae. Proetid trilobites are characteristic of Ordovician-Permian buildups but are seldom common. The number of trilobite families found in carbonate buildups is highest in the late Ordovician, with most of the important families persisting into the Devonian. After the Devonian only proetids are found in this environment. The conservative nature of these trilobite faunas suggests that the environmental characteristics of normal-marine Paleozoic carbonate buildups are similar. The frontiers of eukaryote life in nature are still unidentified. In this study, we analysed protistan communities in the hypersaline (up to 365 g l−1 NaCl) anoxic L'Atalante deep-sea basin located in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. Targeting 18S ribosomal RNA retrieved from the basin's lower halocline (3501 m depth) we detected 279 protistan sequences that grouped into 42 unique phylotypes (99% sequence similarity). Statistical analyses revealed that these phylotypes account only for a proportion of the protists inhabiting this harsh environment with as much as 50% missed by this survey. Most phylotypes were affiliated with ciliates (45%), dinoflagellates (21%), choanoflagelates (10%) and uncultured marine alveolates (6%). Sequences from other taxonomic groups like stramenopiles, Polycystinea , Acantharea and Euglenozoa , all of which are typically found in non-hypersaline deep-sea systems, are either missing or very rare in our cDNA clone library. Although many DHAB sequences fell within previously identified environmental clades, a large number branched relatively deeply. Phylotype richness, community membership and community structure differ significantly from a deep seawater reference community (3499 m depth). Also, the protistan community in the L'Atalante basin is distinctively different from any previously described hypersaline community. In conclusion, we hypothesize that extreme environments may exert a high selection pressure possibly resulting in the evolution of an exceptional and distinctive assemblage of protists. The deep hypersaline anoxic basins in the Mediterranean Sea provide an ideal platform to test for this hypothesis and are promising targets for the discovery of undescribed protists with unknown physiological capabilities.  相似文献

To understand the radiation of any higher taxon, it is important to establish the degree to which global diversification may have been associated with, and possibly dependent on, local paleoenvironmental transitions. In this paper, paleoenvironmental changes accompanying the Paleozoic radiation of the Class Bivalvia are evaluated using a literature‐derived, genus‐level data base of 505 Paleozoic benthic marine fossil assemblages, mainly from North America. A series of contoured time‐environment diagrams, constructed to evaluate spatio‐temporal patterns in the Class as a whole and in constituent life habit groupings, reveals that the Paleozoic spatio‐temporal history of bivalves was dynamic. During their initial Ordovician radiation, bivalves quickly became established in both nearshore and offshore settings, although their highest diversities were generally nearshore. As the Paleozoic progressed, their importance in deepwater and carbonate‐rich environments, where they had previously not been of major significance, increased noticeably; elements of these patterns can be recognized in all four major Paleozoic life habit groups. Processes responsible for these spatio‐temporal transitions probably include a complex set of interacting mechanisms not all of which are related to innate biological characteristics of the group.  相似文献

啮齿动物群落结构可以反映生态环境特征。本研究对处于阿拉善荒漠区呈“孤岛”状态的内蒙古贺兰山国家级自然保护区内啮齿动物的种类、分布型及群落多样性进行系统研究。将内蒙古贺兰山划分为五种生境类型,于2013年春、夏、秋3季共布设有效铗日18748个,捕获啮齿动物235只,分属2目5科11属13种。在整体研究区域,阿拉善黄鼠(Spermophilus alashanicus)为优势种。明确了喜湿型是本研究区域的主要分布型,占捕获啮齿动物的54%,并且在中低海拔区域,随着海拔的升高,喜湿型所占比例增加。受“边缘效应”的影响,山地荒漠和荒漠草原生境以及山地草原灌丛生境的啮齿动物群落多样性指数高于其他生境,除环境因素外,啮齿动物群落的多样性受两种因素的影响,既可随群落内物种数量的增加而增大,同时又受制于群落内部物种分布的均匀程度。冗余分析结果表明,植被高度、植被盖度、灌木(乔木)高度和海拔4个环境因子是决定啮齿动物群落结构最主要的环境因子,其中植被盖度与群落多样性呈负相关,随着植被盖度的增加,多样性指数随之减低。  相似文献

The Amazonian catfish, Panaque nigrolineatus, consume large amounts of wood in their diets. The nitrogen-fixing community within the gastrointestinal (GI) tract of these catfish was found to include nifH phylotypes that are closely related to Clostridium sp., Alpha and Gammaproteobacteria, and sequences associated with GI tracts of lower termites. Fish fed a diet of sterilized palm wood were found to contain nifH messenger RNA within their GI tracts, displaying high sequence similarity to the nitrogen-fixing Bradyrhizobium group. Nitrogenase activity, measured by acetylene reduction assays, could be detected in freshly dissected GI tract material and also from anaerobic enrichment cultures propagated in nitrogen-free enrichment media; nifH sequences retrieved from these cultures were dominated by Klebsiella- and Clostridium-like sequences. Microscopic examination using catalyzed reporter deposition-enhanced immunofluorescence revealed high densities of nitrogenase-containing cells colonizing the woody digesta within the GI tract, as well as cells residing within the intestinal mucous layer. Our findings suggest that the P. nigrolineatus GI tract provides a suitable environment for nitrogen fixation that may facilitate production of reduced nitrogen by the resident microbial population under nitrogen limiting conditions. Whether this community is providing reduced nitrogen to the host in an active or passive manner and whether it is present in a permanent or transient relationship remains to be determined. The intake of a cellulose rich diet and the presence of a suitable environment for nitrogen fixation suggest that the GI tract microbial community may allow a unique trophic niche for P. nigrolineatus among fish.  相似文献

Lactobacilli are found in a wide variety of habitats. Four species, Lactobacillus crispatus, L. gasseri, L. iners, and L. jensenii, are common and abundant in the human vagina and absent from other habitats. These may be adapted to the vagina and possess characteristics enabling them to thrive in that environment. Furthermore, stable codominance of multiple Lactobacillus species in a single community is infrequently observed. Thus, it is possible that individual vaginal Lactobacillus species possess unique characteristics that confer to them host-specific competitive advantages. We performed comparative functional genomic analyses of representatives of 25 species of Lactobacillus, searching for habitat-specific traits in the genomes of the vaginal lactobacilli. We found that the genomes of the vaginal species were significantly smaller and had significantly lower GC content than those of the nonvaginal species. No protein families were found to be specific to the vaginal species analyzed, but some were either over- or underrepresented relative to nonvaginal species. We also found that within the vaginal species, each genome coded for species-specific protein families. Our results suggest that even though the vaginal species show no general signatures of adaptation to the vaginal environment, each species has specific and perhaps unique ways of interacting with its environment, be it the host or other microbes in the community. These findings will serve as a foundation for further exploring the role of lactobacilli in the ecological dynamics of vaginal microbial communities and their ultimate impact on host health.  相似文献

Detailed information on species’ ecological niche characteristics that can be related to declines and extinctions is indispensable for a better understanding of the relationship between the occurrence and performance of wild species and their environment and, moreover, for an improved assessment of the impacts of global change. Knowledge on species characteristics such as habitat requirements is already available in the ecological literature for butterflies, but information about their climatic requirements is still lacking. Here we present a unique dataset on the climatic niche characteristics of 397 European butterflies representing 91% of the European species (see Appendix). These characteristics were obtained by combining detailed information on butterfly distributions in Europe (which also led to the ‘Distribution Atlas of Butterflies in Europe’) and the corresponding climatic conditions. The presented dataset comprises information for the position and breadth of the following climatic niche characteristics: mean annual temperature, range in annual temperature, growing degree days, annual precipitation sum, range in annual precipitation and soil water content. The climatic niche position is indicated by the median and mean value for each climate variable across a species’ range, accompanied by the 95% confidence interval for the mean and the number of grid cells used for calculations. Climatic niche breadth is indicated by the standard deviation and the minimum and maximum values for each climatic variable across a species’ range. Database compilation was based on high quality standards and the data are ready to use for a broad range of applications.It is already evident that the information provided in this dataset is of great relevance for basic and applied ecology. Based on the species temperature index (STI, i.e. the mean temperature value per species), the community temperature index (CTI, i.e. the average STI value across the species in a community) was recently adopted as an indicator of climate change impact on biodiversity by the pan-European framework supporting the Convention on Biological Diversity (Streamlining European Biodiversity Indicators 2010) and has already been used in several scientific publications. The application potential of this database ranges from theoretical aspects such as assessments of past niche evolution or analyses of trait interdependencies to the very applied aspects of measuring, monitoring and projecting historical, ongoing and potential future responses to climate change using butterflies as an indicator.  相似文献
