The pharyngeal teeth and the masticatory process of the basioccipital bone were compared in fifteen species and subspecies of Japanese bitterlings.Acheilognathus lanceolata, A. limbata and two subspecies ofRhodeus ocellatus, which are characterized by the absence of serrations on the side of the pharyngeal teeth, have reduced occlusal grooves on the pharyngeal teeth. In the larvae of these species, the occlusal grooves are fairly developed. The occlusal grooves of the adult pharyngeal teeth in herbivorous species are more developed than those in omnivorous species. The occlusal grooves seem to have developed in relation to the feeding habits. On the basis of the combination of developmental degrees of the anterior part of the masticatory process, the occlusal grooves and the chewing area on the pharyngeal first tooth, Japanese bitterlings were classified into two groups and two types and/or five subtypes, suggesting phylogenetic relationships among them.  相似文献

The sex ratio of bitterling hybrids (subfamily: Acheilognathinae) is often likely to be biased toward males. Artificial hybridization was carried out in 10 species of bitterlings (three genera) in order to elucidate the masculinization mechanism of hybrids. Tanakia himantegus never produced viable F1 hybrids with other species, while hybrids of most other species were viable. In terms of sex ratio and fertility, hybrids were clearly divided into two groups: congeneric Tanakia hybrids and others. Both male and female congeneric Tanakia hybrids were fertile. The sex ratio was nearly 1:1 in all groups of Tanakia hybrids. Except for the congeneric Tanakia hybrids, sterile males appeared predominantly in groups of hybrids in which females were very rare but remained fertile. Sterile intersexes were also observed in five hybrid groups: T. lanceolata (female) x Acheilognathus cyanostigma (male), Rhodeus uyekii (female) x T. lanceolata (male), A. rhombeus (female) x T. lanceolata (male), A. rhombeus (female) x T. limbata (male), and A. tabira tabira (female) x A. cyanostigma (male). In the development of male-predominant hybrids, although hybrid and control (parental species) hatching and survival rates do not differ, no females appeared in hybrids, contrary to the controls. Taking the female heterogametic sex-determining system (ZW) and the phylogenetic relationship of bitterlings into consideration, the masculinization mechanism of hybrids in bitterlings can be explained by the interaction of two sex chromosomes, derived from each parental species. The basic genetic sex in bitterlings is male (ZZ) and the derivative is female (ZW). When parental species are related, the sex phenotype of hybrids coincides with the genetic sex. However, when the parental species differ, the sex phenotype of the ZW genotype is reversed to become male by an abnormal interaction between the Z and W chromosomes. The rare appearance of females and intersexes in male-predominant hybrids might be due to complete or partial functional expression of the W chromosome.  相似文献

The distributions of seven bitterling species and subspecies—Tanakia lanceolata, T. limbata, Acheilognathus tabira nakamurae, A. rhombeus, Rhodeus ocellatus kurumeus, R. ocellatus ocellatus, and R. atremius atremius—in northern Kyushu were predicted using generalized linear models (GLMs) in order to provide information helpful for conserving native bitterlings and preventing the expansion of alien bitterling species. Predictions were made according to the following procedure: (1) a set of GLMs for each species was formulated using environmental data from 710 sites that were derived using digital maps and GIS software, from which the best fit model for each species was selected using the Akaike information criterion for predicting the fish occurrence, (2) model performance was evaluated based on the receiver-operating characteristics (ROC) analysis using occurrence and environmental data from 362 sites, and (3) potential distributions of the bitterling were analyzed using the best fit models and environmental data for 1,272 sites, of which 200 data points without occurrence data were prepared. The best fit models revealed that 4–6 environmental factors were important in predicting seven bitterling distributions, which was supported by the area under the ROC curve (AUC) values of these fishes ranging from 0.753 to 0.927. The AUC values in model evaluation were significantly greater than 0.5 for six fishes, suggesting the moderate accuracies of these best fit models for predicting the fish distributions. These predictive models can be used for evaluating potential native bitterling richness and the potential distribution expansion of an alien subspecies.  相似文献

We have isolated and characterized several highly repetitive DNA elements from two species of Chinese bitterlings, Rhodeus atremius suigensis and R. ocellatus ocellatus. They comprise a partly interspersed and partly tandem repetitive family of about 1.0 to 1.3 kb in length. Individual elements showed considerable length variation, but genomic Southern blotting revealed two major length groups. Their restricted presence of these elements among related species and relative copy number differences indicated rapid change of genome structure in this group of fish. The isolated elements may be useful landmarks for further chromosomal studies.  相似文献

The European bitterlings (Rhodeus amarus) from the Eastern locations were cytogenetically examined by conventional and molecular techniques. All analyzed individuals presented invariably the same chromosomal constitution of 2n = 48, with 8 metacentrics + 20 submetacentrics + 20 subtelo-acrocentrics and C-banding positive heterochromatin at the pericentromeric regions in most of the chromosomes. Moreover, some of the chromosomes had short arms entirely built with heterochromatin. GC-rich Ag-NORs (nucleolus organizer regions) were located at the short arms of two submetacentric chromosomes, and the length polymorphism of these regions was found. Multiple location of 28S rDNA sequences with fluorescence in situ hybridization signals was observed on the long and/or short arms of three submetacentric chromosomes including NOR regions and short arms of three to five acrocentric chromosomes in the studied fish. 5S rDNA sites were found on the short arms of two subtelocentric chromosomes, and telomeric repeats were localized at the ends of all chromosomes. Provided results have expanded our knowledge concerning genetic characteristics of the European bitterlings that may be profitable in the conservation programs of this endangered species.  相似文献

The chromosomes of tufted deer (Elaphodus cephalophus)   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Mitotic and meiotic chromosome preparations of the tufted deer (Elaphodus cephalophus) were studied to elucidate the sex-chromosomal polymorphism evidenced by this species. Females had 2n = 46 or 47 chromosomes, whereas males had 2n = 47 or 48 chromosomes. An X;autosome translocation was identified by synaptonemal complex analysis of spermatocytes at pachytene and confirmed by the presence of a trivalent at diakinesis/metaphase I. The present work, in combination with earlier observations by others, indicates that E. cephalophus possesses a varied X-chromosome morphology involving an X;autosome translocation and addition of varying amounts of heterochromatin. It is speculated that sex-chromosome polymorphism may be responsible for the observed differences in diploid chromosome number of tufted deer.  相似文献

In bitterling Acheilognathus rhombeus , developmental arrest always occurred at stage D of the free‐embryonic phase, regardless of incubation temperature. Developmental arrest was terminated only by a cold treatment at 4° C for 60–90 days, initiated 10 days post‐hatching. After the termination of developmental arrest, free‐embryos became larvae c . 6 months after hatching, regardless of the time of initiation and duration of the cold treatment. In hybridization experiments between A. rhombeus and several species of spring‐spawning bitterlings, free‐embryos became free‐swimming larvae within 60 days after hatching in all experiments. Developmental arrest was not observed in any of the hybrids, regardless of parental sex. These results suggest that free‐embryonic diapause in A. rhombeus is not induced by environmental factors, such as cold, but by genetic factors, which are recessive to those in spring‐spawning bitterlings. Free‐embryonic diapause in A. rhombeus appears to be an adaptation to winter, which might have evolved with reproduction in autumn among autumn‐spawning bitterling species. This is the only report of free‐embryonic diapause after hatching in fishes, and only the second example of diapause in fishes, along with annual killifishes (Rivulidae).  相似文献

Data on morphological and functional characteristics of the ovipositor, conical organ, and ovaries in four species of bitterlings (Russian bitterling Acanthorodeus asmussii, Khanka spiny bitterling A. chankaensis, bitterling Rhodeus sericeus, and Amur bitterling R. amurensis) from the Amur River basin are obtained and reviewed for the first time. In all studied fish species, several generations of sex cells develop at the same time, which leads to releasing of oocytes in batches. The specificity of Amur bitterling, bitterling, and Russian bitterling to selection of mollusks for egg deposition is determined.  相似文献

The phylogeography of the African four-striped mouse, Rhabdomys pumilio, was investigated using complete sequences of the mtDNA cytochrome b gene (1140 bp) and a combination of fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and conventional cytogenetic banding techniques (G- and C-banding). Two cytotypes (2n=46 and 2n=48) were identified by cytogenetic analysis. There is no evidence of diploid number variation within populations, difference in gross chromosome morphology or of subtle interchromosomal rearrangements at levels detected by ZOO-FISH. Analysis of the mtDNA cytochrome b resulted in two major lineages that correspond roughly to the xeric and mesic biotic zones of southern Africa. One mtDNA clade comprises specimens with 2n=48 and the other representatives of two cytotypes (2n=48 and 2n=46). The mean sequence divergence (12%, range 8.3-15.6%) separating the two mtDNA clades is comparable to among-species variation within murid genera suggesting their recognition as distinct species, the prior names for which would be R. dilectus and R. pumilio. Low sequence divergences and the diploid number dichotomy within the mesic lineage support the recognition of two subspecies corresponding to R. d. dilectus (2n=46) and R. d. chakae (2n=48). Our data do not support subspecific delimitation within the nominate, R. pumilio. Molecular dating places cladogenesis of the two putative species at less than five million years, a period characterised by extensive climatic oscillations which are thought to have resulted in habitat fragmentation throughout much of the species range.  相似文献

The complete mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) cytochrome b gene (1140 bp) was sequenced in Herzenstein macrocephalus and Gymnocypris namensis and in 13 other species and sub-species ( n = 22), representing four closely related genera in the subfamily Schizothoracinae. Conflicting taxonomies of H. macrocephalus and G. namensis have been proposed because of the character instability among individuals. Parsimony, maximum likelihood and Bayesian methods produced phylogenetic trees with the same topology and resolved several distinctive clades. Previous taxonomic treatments, which variously placed these two species of separate genera or as sub-species, are inconsistent with the mtDNA phylogeny. Both H. macrocephalus and G. namensis appear in a well-supported clade, which also includes nine species of Schizopygopsis , and hence should be transferred to the genus Schizopygopsis . Morphological changes are further illustrated, and their adaptive evolution in response to the local habitat shifts during the speciation process appears to be responsible for conflicting views on the systematics of these two species and hence the contrasting taxonomic treatments. These species are endemic to the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, a region with a history of geological activity and a rich diversity of habitats that may have result in the parallel and reversal evolution of some morphological characters used in their taxonomies. Our results further suggest that speciation and morphological evolution of fishes in this region may be more complex than those previously expected.  相似文献

Patterns of movement are related to life history and/or species traits. Understanding movement patterns of multiple species sharing the same niche may clarify coexistence mechanisms. Therefore, the movement patterns of three bitterling species, Acheilognathus tabira erythropterus, Acheilognathus melanogaster, and Rhodeus ocellatus ocellatus, were examined between June and November 2009 in an agricultural ditch system associated with Lake Kasumigaura in central Japan. The mark–recapture method was used with a fixed releasing point in an approximately 5.5 km-long ditch. Movement distances of A. t. erythropterus and A. melanogaster were longer than that of R. o. ocellatus, but the direction of movement was similar among the three species. However, R. o. ocellatus moved to locations with a low dissolved oxygen concentration and deeper water. These results suggest that R. o. ocellatus may adapt better to environmental fluctuations, because its tolerance to hypoxia is the highest of the three species. Compared with R. o. ocellatus, A. t. erythropterus and A. melanogaster may move relatively longer distances to search for suitable habitats following an environmental fluctuation.  相似文献

Differences in hypoxia tolerance among three native and three alien bitterling species were examined by means of field surveys and aquarium experiments. I caught fish in minnow traps and measured environmental factors such as dissolved oxygen and current velocity once a month between June and November 2006 at 30 points around Lake Kasumigaura, Japan. In addition, aquarium experiments were carried out to compare aquatic surface respiration thresholds among the bitterling species. Much more individuals of an alien species, Rhodeus ocellatus ocellatus, was caught at the least oxygen range than expected in the field, and showed the highest hypoxia tolerance in the laboratory experiments. Another alien bitterling, Acheilognathus rhombeus, also showed higher hypoxia tolerance than the three native bitterling species. Lake Kasumigaura is well known for eutrophication and water masses with low dissolved oxygen have often been observed there. Differences in hypoxia tolerance among bitterling species might have affected bitterling assemblage structure in Lake Kasumigaura, which is currently characterized by the dominance of R. o. ocellatus.  相似文献

The spawning success of male rose bitterlings, Rhodeus ocellatus, adopting an alternative reproductive style, was estimated through behavioural data and electrophoretic paternal analyses in field observations and experiments. Three mating patterns were observed: territoriality, sneaking, and grouping. Mating patterns depended on a male's relative size and on local male density (the number of males around a spawning spot: a mussel). Spawning patterns (pair spawning, pair spawning with sneaker, and group spawning) varied with local male density. Time-budget data of the territorial males indicated a trade-off between chasing and courtship behaviour as local male density changed. Females deposited appoximately only 1 egg per egg-laying into the mussels. As a result of isozyme analysis, a minimum of 12% (two out of 17) of the offspring in the sample were found to have been fathered by sneaker males in pair spawning with sneaker. I scored through behavioural data the mating success per spawning for each pattern, on an individual basis. The average reproductive success per spawning for each pattern was: territorial (0.61), sneaking (0.31) and grouping (0.11), and thus the successes of the patterns were not equal. Accordingly, the alternative reproductive styles of male rose bitterlings are best interpreted as alternative phenotypes in a conditional behaviour.  相似文献

A hypothesis-based framework was used to test if 3 genetic strains of Mesocestoides (clades A, B, and C) are distinct evolutionary lineages, thereby supporting their delimitation as species. For comparative purposes, 3 established cestode species, Taenia pisiformis, Taenia serialis, and Taenia crassiceps were assessed using the same methods. Sequence data from mitochondrial rDNA (12S) and the second internal transcribed spacer of nuclear rDNA (ITS-2) revealed derived (autapomorphic) characters for lineages representing clade A (n = 6 autapomorphies), clade B (n = 4), and clade C (n = 9) as well as T. pisiformis (n = 15) and T. serialis (n = 12). Furthermore, multivariate analysis of morphological data revealed significant differences among the 3 genetic strains of Mesocestoides and between T. pisiformis and T. serialis. The level of phenotypic variation within evolutionary lineages of Mesocestoides and Taenia spp. tapeworms was similar. Results from this study support recognizing Mesocestoides clades A, B, and C as separate species, and provide evidence that clade B and Mesocestoides vogae are conspecific.  相似文献

A comparative cytogenetic map was built for Lotusuliginosus (2n = 12), expanding previous analyses that revealed intra- and interspecific chromosomal rearrangements in the model legume L. japonicus, L. filicaulis, and L. burttii. This species is positioned in a sister clade of the previously-mapped species and is proposed as one of the progenitors of L. corniculatus, the main forage crop of the genus. The cytogenetic map allowed the location of 12 genomic regions to be compared between these species. A high macrosynteny was revealed, but it was interrupted by a translocation involving chromosomes 3 and 5, a new rearrangement for the genus. Also, a transposition on chromosome 2 was found in L. japonicus 'Miyakojima'. Furthermore, changes in the number, size, and position of rDNA sites were observed, as well as an intraspecific size heteromorphism of the 5S rDNA site on L. uliginosus chromosome 6. The karyotype differences observed are proportional to the phylogenetic distance among these species.  相似文献

Bitterling fishes lay their eggs on the gills of living freshwater mussels and are valuable models in behavioural and evolutionary ecology. We used morphological and genetic data to resolve the taxonomic relationships of bitterling in Europe. Previous studies have suggested the European bitterling is either a single species with a wide but discontinuous geographic distribution, or a complex of species. Morphometric and meristic data identified differences between three putative species; with a clear distinction between the eastern Asian Rhodeus sericeus, western European bitterling Rhodeus amarus, and colchian bitterling, Rhodeus colchicus. Polymorphism in the mitochondrial DNA control region was predominantly due to insertion/deletion events, making phylogenetic inference difficult, but the single haplotype found in R. sericeus populations was detected at low frequency (one of 24 individuals) in R. amarus and R. colchicus populations. Eight control region haplotypes were found in R. amarus populations, which were distinct from the two haplotypes in a R. colchicus population. Cytochrome b data produced a phylogeny with strongly‐supported differentiation between a clade of two R. sericeus haplotypes and a clade of six R. amarus/colchicus haplotypes. The star‐like topology of the R. amarus/colchicus haplotypes in a minimum spanning network suggested a rapid radiation in this clade. Our results are consistent with an hypothesis of relatively ancient divergence of R. sericeus from R. amarus/colchicus and more recent and rapid differentiation between R. amarus and R. colchicus. © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2008, 95 , 337–347.  相似文献

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections are widely distributed in humans, infecting approximately one third of the world's population. HBV variants have also been detected and genetically characterised from Old World apes; Gorilla gorilla (gorilla), Pan troglodytes (chimpanzee), Pongo pygmaeus (orang-utan), Nomascus nastusus and Hylobates pileatus (gibbons) and from the New World monkey, Lagothrix lagotricha (woolly monkey). To investigate species-specificity and potential for cross species transmission of HBV between sympatric species of apes (such as gorillas and chimpanzees in Central Africa) or between humans and chimpanzees or gorillas, variants of HBV infecting captive wild-born non-human primates were genetically characterised. 9 of 62 chimpanzees (11.3%) and two from 11 gorillas (18%) were HBV-infected (15% combined frequency), while other Old world monkey species were negative. Complete genome sequences were obtained from six of the infected chimpanzee and both gorillas; those from P. t .ellioti grouped with previously characterised variants from this subspecies. However, variants recovered from P. t. troglodytes HBV variants also grouped within this clade, indicative of transmission between sub-species, forming a paraphyletic clade. The two gorilla viruses were phylogenetically distinct from chimpanzee and human variants although one showed evidence for a recombination event with a P.t.e.-derived HBV variant in the partial X and core gene region. Both of these observations provide evidence for circulation of HBV between different species and sub-species of non-human primates, a conclusion that differs from the hypothesis if of strict host specificity of HBV genotypes.  相似文献

The reproductive ecology of two endangered subspecies of the bitterling Rhodeus atremius was investigated in two rivers in Okayama and Fukuoka Prefectures, Japan. Several other bitterling species, R. ocellatus, Tanakia limbata, T. lanceolata, Acheilognathus tabira and A. rhombeus, are also found in these rivers. Spawning of both R. atremius subspecies was recorded between late March and August 2007, peaking between April and July. Females of R. atremius began to mature at small body size (minimum 25 mm). They had small clutch sizes (maximum 16 eggs) and developed a short ovipositor (mean 13.6 mm), which was used to deposit a bulb-shaped egg of comparatively large size (3.2 mm3, major and minor axes 2.8 and 1.5 mm). Clutch size, ovipositor length and egg size appear to be a function of female body size. Both the body size and ovipositor length of R. atremius with ripe ova and the size and shape of the eggs varied seasonally. Rhodeus a. suigensis achieved maturity at a smaller body size, had a longer ovipositor and produced smaller eggs, with the minor axis being wider relative to the major axis than those of R. a. atremius. Rhodeus atremius may be adapted for depositing small numbers of eggs in a much shallower position inside the gills of smaller host mussels than other bitterling species.  相似文献

The mesic four‐striped grass rat Rhabdomys dilectus De Winton, 1897 is distributed in mesic regions of southern and eastern Africa. We carried out a molecular and chromosomal study of the northernmost populations of the species to provide insight into the subspecific boundaries identified within the species and to describe its genetic structure in Eastern Africa. Maximum likelihood, maximum parsimony and neighbour‐joining methods were used to construct phylogenetic relationships among all the haplotypes belonging to the large part of the species range. Times of divergences were estimated assuming a relaxed molecular clock with two calibration points. We identified three well‐supported clades within R. dilectus. One basal clade corresponding to Rhabdomys d. chakae (2n = 48) is found in South Africa. Two additional sister clades corresponding to R. d. dilectus (2n = 48 and 2n = 46) are allopatrically distributed in southern and northern parts of the species range. Genetic divergence among the three clades is relatively high (ranges 4.2–5.7%). A very divergent new karyotype 2n = 38, FNa = 60 was found in two high‐altitude populations on Mt. Meru and Mt. Kilimanjaro. The karyotype differences consist in three Robertsonian fusions and one whole‐arm reciprocal translocation. Interestingly, the mtDNA phylogeny does not match with the diploid numbers. In fact, the 2n = 38 specimens form a monophyletic group within a clade that includes specimens with the 2n = 46 karyotype that appears as paraphyletic. We estimated the new karyotype originated in peripatric condition during the last phases of the Pleistocene. This study confirms the importance of chromosomal analysis in detecting taxonomic units and cryptic diversity in rodents.  相似文献

The length–weight relationships (LWRs) were estimated for ten fish species from the Jingjiang reach of the Yangtze River, China. Samples were collected using a combination set-net consisting of a 40-meter net wall (mesh size: 1.8 cm) and two fyke nets (mesh size: 0.9 cm) on the 1st, 11th and 21st of each month from January 2012 to December 2017. The b values of all species were within the expected ranges, varying between 2.849 and 3.292. This study provides the LWR parameters for Distoechodon tumirostris, Microphysogobio microstomus, Saurogobio dumerili, Squalidus nitens, Acheilognathus gracilis, Sarcocheilichthys kiangsiensis, Sarcocheilichthys parvus, Rhodeus fangi, Micropercops swinhonis, Repomucenus olidus.  相似文献
