The nocturnal migratory activity of the six most abundant Gastrosaccinaeliving off the European coast, namely Gastrosaccus sanctus,Gastrosaccus spinifrr, Anchialina agilis, Haplostylus lobatus,Haplostylus lobatus var. armata and Haplostylus norrnani. wasstudied. Both Gastrosaccus perform horizontal and vertical migrationsnear sandy beaches. These migrations involve the whole population, which exhibits a superficial or hyponeustonic distribution inthe water column. Anchialina and Haplostylus perform verticalmigrations from inshore to slope waters. The timing of pelagicphases, as well as the distribution in the water column, dependon age. sex, depth and clarity. Male A.agilis and H.lobatusshow intense migratory activity leading to a hyponeustonic distributionin mid-shelf and slope waters a few hours after dusk. Femalesand juveniles show continuous pelagic phases and a uniform distributionfrom dusk to dawn. Haplosiylus lobatus var. armata and H.normanipopulations exhibit the same behaviour, consisting of overnightmigrations and a uniform to deep nocturnal distnbution. In shallowwaters, male Anchialina and Haplostylus no longer exhibit hyponeustonicbehaviour and their nocturnal distribution becomes more andmore deep as clarity increases. Above the slope, animals thatmigrate from the continental shelf during the night sometimesadopt permanent pelagic behaviour above more than 200 or 300m in depth. but upward nocturnal migration persists and leadsto superficial stratification, albeit delayed. Slow morningdescents to the bottom can occur even further from the 500 misobath.  相似文献

POTAMOPYRGUS ANTIPODARUM--A MOLLUSCAN COLONISER OF EUROPE AND AUSTRALIA   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The hydrobiid gastropod genus Potamopyrgus is shown to be representedin Australia by the New Zealand species P. antipodarum (Gray). It is widely distributed in south eastern Australia and Tasmaniafollowing its introduction about the middle of the last century. The Australian populations of Potamopyrgus were known, incorrectly,as P. niger, because of a misinterpretation of Paludina nigraQuoy & Gai-mard, 1835. Paludina nigra, here placed in thegenus Fluvidona, is redescribed and a neotype designated. Potamopyrgusantipodarum has also been introduced to Europe, where it isknown as P. jenkinsi (Smith) (Received 19 August 1987; accepted 16 December 1987)  相似文献

Seven new species of the nudibranch genus Trapania Pruvot-Fol,1931 (Goniodorididae) are described from the Indo-West Pacificand an eighth species, T. japonica (Baba, 1935), originallydescribed from one preserved specimen from Japan, is redescribedfrom specimens collected in Hong Kong and tropical eastern Australia.Three of the new species are from temperate south-eastern Australiaand one from tropical eastern Australia. Two species are knownonly from Hong Kong and a third is recorded from the SudaneseRed Sea as well as Hong Kong. Only ten other species of Trapania have been described, sixof those from Europe, and one each from Brazil, California,Japan and New Zealand. The anatomy and external colour patternof these species is compared with that of the seven new species. (Received 12 December 1986;  相似文献

Rostromysis bacescuii gen. et sp. nov. and Megalopsis denlicaudagen. et sp. nov. belonging to the tribe Leptomysini are describedfrom the south-west coast of Australia. The characters uniqueto the genus Rostromysis are the unusually long club-shapedrostrum and the large delicate lamella-like pleopods of thefemale, thus easily distinguishing it from the allied generaTenagomysis and Doxomysis. The genus Megalopsis is closely alliedto Leptomysis, Prionomysis and Promysis but is readily distinguishablein having a short linguiform uncleft telson with a pair of medianplumose setae.  相似文献

A new genus and species of Planorbidae, Kessneria papillosa n.gen.and sp. from the Northern Territory, Australia, are described. The new genus is morphologically most similar to Leichhardtia, another genus restricted to Northern Australia, from which itdiffers in a number of important shell and anatomical characters. The shell of the new genus differs from all other planorbidsin having a raised, papillate protoconch, and is also uniqueamongst Australian high-spired genera in being umbilicate and inhaving a sinuate outer lip. Lepsiella vinosa\ (Lamarck), a common intertidal predatory gastropod, was studied in two zones on an exposed rocky shore in Victoria(Australia). Those from the Mussel Zone in the mid-shore primarilyate one species of mussel and had a faster rate of energy consumptionthan those from the Littorinid Zone in the high-shore, whichmainly ate one species of littorinid gastropod. Shell length, growth rate and size-specific body weight of L. vinosa wereall significantly greater in the Mussel Zone. Egg capsules ofL. vinosa from the Mussel Zone contained significantly moreeggs and more potential hatchlings per capsule than those fromthe Littorinid Zone although there were no significant differencesin the sizes of eggs or hatchlings between zones. These differencesbetween the two zones were correlated to the greater consumptionof energy by L. vinosa in the Mussel Zone and were discussedin relation to the absence of dispersive larvae in this species 1Present address: Department of Zoology, Monash University,Clayton, Victoria, 3168, Australia 2Present address: School of Biological Sciences, Carslaw Building,F07, University of Sydney, N.S.W., 2006, Australia. A new genus of Assimineidae, Conassiminea, is described fromestuarine habitats in southeastern Australia (New South Wales,Tasmania and Victoria). Two new species, C. studderti and C.zheni, are included in the genus, the former being the typespecies. Conassiminea is distinct from all other assimineidgenera in two autapomorphies in the female reproductive system:the seminal receptacle has two ducts and the bursal duct isextremely wide. The phylogenetic relationships of the new genuswere examined using a morphological dataset. (Received 26 February 2005; accepted 22 April 2005)  相似文献

ADELACERITHIINAE: A NEW SUBFAMILY OF THE TRIPHORIDAE (MOLLUSCA: GASTROPODA)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Adelacerithiinae is proposed for the Pliocene Adelacerithiummerulatum Ludbrook, 1941, from Abattoirs Bore, South Australia, and the Recent A. mirabilis n.sp., from off northern New Zealand,Adelacerithium species have a dextral cerithiform shell, distinctiveshell sculpture, a columellar plait, and rhinioglossate dentitionwith reversed radular cross-row configuration. Relationshipsbetween the major triphorid groups and the possibilities forcommon origin for the Triphoroidea, Ccrithiopsoidea, Cerithioidea, and the Neogastropods are discussed. A new species of pelagic amphipod, Lestrigonus ducrayi sp. nov.,from eastern Australia, is described and illustrated. It isvery similar to Lestrigonus bengalensis Giles, 1887, but isreadily distinguished by a relatively shorter telson (aboutone-third peduncle uropod 3) and, in mature males, pereonites1–5 are fused as in females. The two species often occurtogether in the same plankton sample; the new species beingmore abundant inshore, although both species seem to preferinshore waters. A key to the species of Lestrigonus is provided.  相似文献

In the Peel-Harvey estuary system, Western Australia, some 90%of riverflow and nutrient loading occurs in three winter months.Diatom blooms follow riverflow, but are replaced by blooms ofthe blue-green Nodularia spumigena Mert., especially in HarveyEstuary. By analysis of time series data from 1977–1983,it is shown that the magnitude of the Nodularia bloom in summeris related to the minimum salinity of the estuary (and hencetotal river flow), maximum phosphate concentration and totalriverine phosphorus loading, in the previous winter. The relationshipshave a predictive capacity. It is argued that diatom bloomstrap phosphorus, which is sedimented largely as faecal pellets;the phosphorus is recycled and supports Nodularia growth underwarmer conditions, and the amount available determines Nodulariabiomass. Nodularia blooms collapse when summer salinities reach30  相似文献

The Epacridaceae of Western Australia comprise 181 named speciesdistributed in 17 genera. One hundred and seventy seven species(98% of the total) and ten genera are endemic to the region.within Western Australia, all members are confined to the south, with a bimodal pattern of species diversity centred on the sandplainsand uplands around the Stirling Ranges and Mount Lesueur.Leucopogon, the largest genus, reflects this pattern, however, speciesdiversity is greatest on the south coastal sandplains. All species are woody shrubs, mostly found on neutral or acidicsandy soils. Plants of at least 120 species are killed by fire;Astrolomacontainsthe only significant number of resprouting species. Althoughsome species are in flower every month every year, autumn/winterflowering is a common feature of many members of the family. All species are biotically pollinated. Bird pollination is foundin 18 species in six genera. The remaining species are insectpollinated. Bees are the major pollinators inLeucopogon, ConostephiumandColeanthera.Moths and butterflies are important pollinators inAndersonia,Leucopogon,LysinemaandStyphelia. Flies are minor pollinators of some speciesofAndersonia, LeucopogonandMonotoca. All species studied areprotandrous and outbreeding, with onlyCosmeliabeing capableof self pollination. Fruits are fleshy inAstroloma, Brachyloma,Croninia, in certain species ofLeucopogonandStypheliaand areanimal dispersed. Other genera have dry, dehiscent fruit withgravity or wind dispersed seeds. Many species have relatively narrow distribution ranges, 90species having ranges of over 300km, 54 species have rangesof 100–300km and 37 have ranges of less than 100km (andthere are many undescribed species in this group). The conservationstatus of many species is still poorly known. Dieback diseaseis a major threat to the family, and could cause the extinctionof several species in the wild. Monthly samples of L. australis, V. spongiartum, P. bicolorand D. cuneata were collected over a period of 12 months fromPrincess Royal Harbour, Western Australia. Preliminary informationon densities and biomass is given. Gonad histology points toseasonal reproductive cycles with autumn spawning in P. bicolorand D. cuneata and irregular spawning in V. spongiantm and L.australis. However, L. australis did show two peaks of larvalbrooding in the study period. Length-frequency data are discussedin the light of the proposed reproductive patterns for the fourspecies. Allometric relationships between length and both heightand width for all species are described and their value to eachspecies assessed. Populations of L. australis from differenthabitats show significant differences in shell shape. (Received 27 June 1983;  相似文献

Changing distribution patterns of T. pisana and C. virgata atcoastal sites around South Australia suggest T. pisana is replacingC. virgata in some areas Under laboratory conditions C. virgata exhibits reduced survivaland growth, is less active and feeds less when kept in the presenceof T. pisana adults and/or their mucus and excrement. If thearea of cooccurrence is large relative to the population size,C. virgata may be displaced to the less favourable habitats. No inhibition of the fecundity of C. virgata was seen. Bothspecies also depress feeding intraspecifically T. pisana also preys on C. virgata under some conditions, notnecessarily when food is limiting It is suggested that these mechanisms act within co-occurringpopulations of the species and result in the exclusion of C.virgata from some areas *Present address: 9 Torrens Ave, West Hindmarsh, South Auustralia,5007 (Received 1 November 1986; accepted 15 November 1987)  相似文献

The Labidocera pectinata species group is recognized as a uniquemonophyletic lineage within the primarily tropical Indo-WestPacific radiation of coastal water species encompassed by theLabidocera kroyeri complex. Both categories are defined andthe six species comprising the pectinata group, including twonew to science, are diagnosed. Review of available facts supportsthe proposal that L. bipinnata be ranked as a junior synonymof L. rotunda. Phylogenetic relationships within the group basedon sexually modified characters are assessed. Two geminate pairsof parapatric species are identified. The geographic rangesof one pair are adjacent in the Andaman Sea, those of the otherpair in the vicinity of Cape York, Australia. Each pair appearsto be a consequence of a relatively recent speciation event. The apparent phylogenetic intermediacy of L. japonica linkingthe two tropical species of Asia and the three from Papua-Australiasuggests an older sequence of trans-hemisphere spreading anddiversification.  相似文献

Two new species of mysid shrimps are described from shallow coastal waters of Northern Oman. Haplostylus quadrispinosus sp. nov. is primarily distinguished from allied species by the arrangement and size of lateral spines on the telson. The form of the telson and exopod of the 4th male pleopod characterize a second new species, Anisomysis arabica sp. nov. A third species Mysidopsis kenyana, was previously recorded only from East Africa and its presence in samples considerably extends its geographical distribution. Four mysid species are now documented from coastal waters of Oman.  相似文献
