Endogenous testosterone levels were measured in association with sexual, aggressive, and social/affiliative behaviors in 11 outdoor-housed female rhesus monkeys over a ten-month period. Several behaviors (sex directed toward the male, sex received from the male, aggression directed toward the male, submission directed toward the male, submission directed toward the female, and groom another female) were significantly (p<0.05) positively correlated with testosterone in from one to five females. No trends were strong enough across all females to suggest that any of these correlations have species-wide significance. Factor analysis revealed clearcut clusters of behaviors, but elevations in testosterone were not strongly associated with any of these clusters. It is concluded that endogenous testosterone levels have little measurable effect on overt behavior in female rhesus monkeys.  相似文献

目的探索北京地区人工饲养恒河猴与食蟹猴的繁殖性能,为温带地区猕猴的人工饲养和繁殖方式提供借鉴。方法对军事医学科学院实验动物中心饲养的317只恒河猴繁殖群(30只雄猴,287只雌猴)和78只食蟹猴繁殖群(8只雄猴,70只雌猴)近两年的繁殖性状进行观察和统计分析。结果恒河猴母猴妊娠率、繁殖率和成活率分别为60.73%、54.45%和96.89%。食蟹猴母猴妊娠率、繁殖率和成活率分别为79.86%、56.12%和75.00%。结论食蟹猴和恒河猴可以成功的在温带地区饲养和繁殖,但人工饲养食蟹猴的妊娠率与产仔率较恒河猴高,而仔猴成活率则低于恒河猴。  相似文献

During a 16-month study of semifree-ranging Barbary macaques (Macaca sylvanus) the group under observation divided into two groups. Observations were carried out in 1987–1988, at «La Montagne des Singes,” Kintzheim, France. A subgroup of monkeys, which was already cohesive at the beginning of the study, became progressively autonomous in relation to the rest of the main group, during the mating season. Overt aggression between the males of the two groups during this period brought about the fission. Only low-ranking genealogies left their group of origin. Dominance relations between females remained identical in both groups except for one lineage. The alpha male and the alpha female of the subgroup had a close relationship before the fission occurred. The sequence of agonistic intergroup relations is described and analyzed in relation to male sexual competition and female alliance power. The results suggest that: (1) the males of the subgroup instigated the fission because it was the best strategy for them to counter sexual competition; and (2) the females followed the males in order to maintain their alliance network, necessary to insure their dominance status over subordinate females.  相似文献

The expression of agonistic behavior in adult and juvenile members of both sexes was studied in groups of from 23 to 93 animals representing Macaca mulatta, M. arctoides, M. nemestrina, M. nigra, and Cercocebus atys. Data were collected using focal animal techniques over a period of 1 year for each group. Adult male biting was notably infrequent in all cases, and adult male participation in agonistic encounters was less frequent than for any other age-sex class, especially in the groups with the highest agonistic rates. Adult male agonistic behavior was often expressed as aggression but seldom involved contact forms of aggression, and biting constituted the smallest proportion of contact aggression for all age-sex classes. Adult males were also seldom the targets of aggression and had the highest rates for shaking of objects and bouncing displays. A tendency for the most severe forms of aggressive expression to be most frequent in those animals least capable of inflicting injury was noted in all groups, along with a tendency for aggression to be directed toward immature animals. Sex differences in aggressive expression and responses to aggression were noted, but the frequency of receipt of aggression was not directly reflected in the wounding noted. Different means to achieve the same consequence, infrequent adult male damaging attacks, are suggested to operate in the several groups studied.  相似文献

对30个成年短尾猴下颌骨的8个有关变量作了性二型研究。单因子分析说明,8个变量均达到了显著差异水平。判别分析得到的第一判别式为:D=-11.013+1.151下颌骨髁长+0.269下颌骨髁宽。当D=-1.271±0.182时,标本为雌性;当D=0.973±0.290时为雄性。雄性下颌骨髁比雌性更长和更宽,且变化较为稳定,可作为种内性别间的鉴别特征。雄性比雌性具有较大咀嚼阻力臂(下颌长),但其他阻力臂则比雌性相对较短。与一些灵长类相同变量的比较说明,短尾猴下颌骨结构与猕猴较为接近,与长尾叶猴则相差甚远。这可反映它们食性和行为方面的亲疏关系。  相似文献

Two ovariectomized female rhesus monkeys treated year-round with estradiol-filled capsules were used in hour-long behavioral tests with male rhesus monkeys both in and out of the normal breeding season. The study was designed primarily to test male hormonal responses to copulatory behavior and it was expected that behavior of the females would be essentially the same under both seasonal conditions. Several behaviors of the female, however, were found to fluctuate on a seasonal basis, namely (1) proximity to the male, (2) grooming of the male, (3) sexual presentations, and (4) threatening away (a form of sexual invitation). All of these behaviors, except proximity, were found to be positively correlated with the male partner's testosterone levels before and after the behavior test in the only test condition in which most males ejaculated. The preliminary suggestion is made that these females responded to some cue, either from the environment or from the males, that caused a change in their behavior between breeding and nonbreeding seasons despite the constant hormonal environment provided by the estradiol capsules. Since the same behaviors which were sensitive to seasonal effects were positively correlated with male testosterone levels, it is possible that the male's hormonal status affects affects female behavior.  相似文献

Male spider monkeys direct the majority of their aggression toward adult females, and the aggressive interactions may be a form of sexual coercion. We investigated female-directed male aggression in 2 wild communities of spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi yucatanensis) from the Otoch Ma’ax Yetel Kooh Reserve in Yucatan, Mexico to evaluate the sexual coercion hypothesis. The aggression occurred in 2 distinct forms: physical aggression and prolonged noncontact chases. The latter appeared highly ritualized in nature and accounted for >80% of all female-directed male aggression. Rates of prolonged chases, but not physical aggression, peaked when the female target was likely cycling and were associated with male place-sniffing of the substrate previously occupied by the female target. Prolonged chases were also associated with proceptive behavior directed from the female target toward her male attacker after the chase had ceased. Our data therefore suggest that prolonged chases are sexually motivated. Prolonged chases did not result in immediate copulation, but sometimes the female victim left the subgroup to travel alone with her male aggressor, and thus prolonged chases may be a form of male intimidation to coerce females into a mating consortship. However, as prolonged chases appeared highly ritualized, the chases may also be a form of male sexual display. Further investigation of the costs incurred by female recipients of prolonged chases is therefore required before one can interpret the behavior as sexual coercion.  相似文献

Spontaneous self-aggressive behaviors were observed in five adult male rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) housed at a university facility. All were individually caged, were free of intercurrent disease, and were being utilized in ongoing research studies. The self-aggressive behaviors observed included self-biting, self-clasping, self-slapping, self-rubbing and threatening of body parts. In several cases, wounds were inflicted and medical treatment was required due to the severity of the lesions. A review of the animals' clinical histories revealed an increased level of self-aggressive behavior in four of five monkeys during such stressful or stimulating conditions as movement of the animal to a new cage, movement of animals out of the room or escape of other monkeys from their cages. The frequency with which these behaviors occurred was quantitated experimentally. The results revealed an increased level of self-aggressive behavior in two of these animals during the videotaped sessions in response to aggressive contacts with the investigator. In contrast, one monkey exhibited self-aggressive behavior both clinically and experimentally in the absence of environmental stimuli or human contact. Clinical management of self-aggressive monkeys included housing monkeys only with physically smaller primates, decreasing the level of environmental stimuli, and drug therapy. Haloperidol was used with success in one animal that exhibited severe self-aggressive behavior.  相似文献

Rhesus monkeys occasionally break up fights among conspecifics and this phenomenon may be called “interference.” The present study describes the patterns of interference in a group of free-ranging rhesus monkeys and evaluates the effect of this behavior onMacaca mulatta social organization. Data were collected at Cayo Santiago. Strong sexual differences were found in the patterning of interference behavior. Females tended to help victims of aggression and animals from the interferer's own genealogy, especially juveniles. In addition, females were likely to interfere as subordinate to the target animal. Natal and non-natal males oriented toward unrelated adult females and generally only interfered in fights if dominant to the target animal. Further, the males helped victims of aggression significantly less often than females did. Contrary to expectation, the dominant males were noteworthy neither for the quantity nor the effect of their interference. In general, the findings reinforce the notion that females are the stable and central part of a rhesus monkey social group. The findings also suggest that interference plays a role in the maintenance of group stability and cohesion.  相似文献

Central administration of oxytocin (OT) antagonists inhibits maternal and sexual behavior in non-primates, providing the strongest experimental evidence that endogenous OT facilitates these behaviors. While there have been a few reports that ICV administration of OT increases social behaviors in monkeys, no studies to date have assessed the effects of OT antagonists. Therefore, we studied in rhesus monkeys whether L368,899, a non-peptide antagonist produced by Merck that selectively blocks the human uterine OT receptor, penetrates the CNS after peripheral administration and alters female maternal and sexual behavior. In two studies in four male monkeys, L368,899 was injected iv (1 mg/kg) after which (1) CSF samples were collected at intervals over 4 h and (2) brains were collected at 60 min. Assay of samples confirmed that iv-administered L368,899 entered CSF and accumulated in the hypothalamus, septum, orbitofrontal cortex, amygdala and hippocampus, but not other areas. An adult female monkey was tested for interest in either an infant or sexual behavior, receiving a different iv treatment prior to each test (1 or 3 mg/kg of L368,899 or saline). OT antagonist treatment reduced or eliminated interest in the infant and sexual behavior. These results, although preliminary, are the first to directly implicate endogenous OT in activation of primate maternal interest and sexual behavior. While it remains to be empirically demonstrated that peripherally administered L368,899 blocks central OT receptors, our behavioral findings suggest that this non-peptide antagonist may facilitate testing OT involvement in a variety of social and other behaviors in primates.  相似文献

We have found that commercial restraint chairs suitable for the rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta) cause severe physical distress to many cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis). A new restraint chair has therefore been designed specifically for the cynomolgus. The key features of the chair are an angled neck piece, a large opening to provide free movement for the tail, a soft waist restraint, and a level surface for both the heels and ischial pads. This new chair is not only suitable for the cynomolgus monkey but may also be more comfortable for the rhesus monkey than standard commercial chairs.  相似文献

Physiological parameters of laboratory animals used for biomedical research is crucial for following several experimental procedures. With the intent to establish baseline biologic parameters for non-human primates held in closed colonies, hematological and morphometric data of captive monkeys were determined. Data of clinically healthy rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta), cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis), and squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) were collected over a period of five years. Animals were separated according to sex and divided into five age groups. Hematological data were compared with those in the literature by Student's t test. Discrepancies with significance levels of 0.1, 1 or 5% were found in the hematological studies. Growth curves showed that the sexual dimorphism of rhesus monkeys appeared at an age of four years. In earlier ages, the differences between sexes could not be distinguished (p < 0.05). Sexual dimorphism in both squirrel monkeys and cynomolgus monkeys occurred at an age of about 32 months. Data presented in this paper could be useful for comparative studies using primates under similar conditions.  相似文献

Estrogen (E2) has activational effects on sexual motivation and mitigating effects on anxiety-like behaviors that can be attenuated with chronic exposure to psychosocial stress. Some studies suggest that this attenuation can be overcome by higher doses of E2, while others show that chronic psychosocial stress may alter the mechanisms of E2 function, thus reducing any positive benefit from higher doses of E2. To determine the interaction between psychosocial stress and E2 dose on behavior, we examined the scope of attenuation across a suite of socioemotional behaviors, including reproduction, affiliation, aggression, submission, and anxiety-like behaviors on 36 ovariectomized female rhesus monkeys. Females were exposed to graded psychosocial stress, established by an intrinsic female dominance hierarchy, where subordinate animals receive high amounts of harassment. Our data show that E2 dose-dependently increased sexual motivation and male-affiliation in dominant (e.g. low-stress) females, while subordinate females showed no positive effects of E2, even at higher doses. In addition, contact aggression was attenuated in dominant females, while non-contact aggression was attenuated in both dominant and middle-ranking females. These results suggest that the stress-induced attenuation of E2's activational effects on sexual behavior and affiliation with males may not be overcome with higher doses of E2. Furthermore, the observed behavioral consequences of psychosocial stress and E2 dose may be dependent on the behaviors of all the females in the social-group, and better resolution on these effects depends on isolating treatment to individuals within the group to minimize alterations in social-group interactions.  相似文献

Evidence is accumulating that sex steroids in the eggs, besides affecting progeny phenotype and behavior in the short term, also have enduring effects until adulthood, when they may translate into differences in reproductive strategies and success. Maternal steroids transfer may therefore affect both agonistic behavior and mate choice decisions, either through the promotion of body size and condition or through a priming effect on the neuroendocrine system. However, owing to the prevalence of a short-term perspective, relevance of maternal transfer of sex steroids to sexual selection processes has been seldom studied. Here we investigate the effects of an experimental increase in egg testosterone on male dominance and copulation success in the ring-necked pheasant, Phasianus colchicus, a polygynous galliform with multiple male ornamental traits, in captivity. We found that females from testosterone (T) injected eggs copulated less than control females. Males from T-injected eggs obtained more copulations than control males, specifically with control females. The effect of male ‘ordinary’ and secondary sexual traits on either dominance or copulation frequency did not depend on early exposure to T, nor did T treatment affect male dominance. Present results demonstrate that variation in the early hormonal environment set up by mothers affects sexual behavior of the offspring, which might translate into fitness differences.  相似文献

The sexual behavior of a group of free-ranging rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) was studied for 13 consecutive months in an attempt to determine whether or not sexual activity occurred year-round, and the importance of sexual attraction to rhesus monkey social organization.Estrous behavior was seen both inter-menstrually and peri-menstrually, producing a shorter mean estrous cycle length than reported by other workers. New data was gathered on the interrelationships among age, dominance rank, and sexual activity; son-mother and brothersister matings; and sexual favoritism among free-ranging rhesus monkeys.A few females who failed to conceive during the fall breeding season showed cyclic estrous behavior throughout the entire annual cycle. Hypotheses are given as to possible physiological bases for birth season sexual cycles.Several forms of inter-animal bonding, including sexual bonding, are enumerated, and their importance to rhesus monkey social organization discussed.  相似文献

Rhesus and cynomolgus macaques are frequently used in biomedical research, and the availability of their reference genomes now provides for their use in genome-wide association studies. However, little is known about linkage disequilibrium (LD) in their genomes, which can affect the design and success of such studies. Here we studied LD by using 1781 conserved single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 183 rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta), including 97 purebred Chinese and 86 purebred Indian animals, and 96 cynomolgus macaques (M. fascicularis fascicularis). Correlation between loci pairs decayed to 0.02 at 1146.83, 2197.92, and 3955.83 kb for Chinese rhesus, Indian rhesus, and cynomolgus macaques, respectively. Differences between the observed heterozygosity and minor allele frequency (MAF) of pairs of these 3 taxa were highly statistically significant. These 3 nonhuman primate taxa have significantly different genetic diversities (heterozygosity and MAF) and rates of LD decay. Our study confirms a much lower rate of LD decay in Indian than in Chinese rhesus macaques relative to that previously reported. In contrast, the especially low rate of LD decay in cynomolgus macaques suggests the particular usefulness of this species in genome-wide association studies. Although conserved markers, such as those used here, are required for valid LD comparisons among taxa, LD can be assessed with less bias by using species-specific markers, because conserved SNPs may be ancestral and therefore not informative for LD.Abbreviations: GWAS, genome-wide association study; LD, linkage disequilibrium; MAF, minor allele frequencyContributing to the widespread use of nonhuman primates in biomedical research, captive-breeding programs such as those of the National Primate Research Center system in the United States were established initially by using animals imported from Asia. The 2 most commonly used primates are rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) and long-tailed or cynomolgus macaques (M. fascicularis fascicularis).After humans, rhesus macaques are the most widely distributed primate species.37,38 This species is found throughout mainland Asia, ranging from Afghanistan to India and eastward through Thailand and southern China to the Yellow Sea.31,34 In addition to their significant morphological differences,9 rhesus macaques of Indian and Chinese origins have been demonstrated to exhibit significant phenotypic differences that are directly relevant to their use as biomedical models in experimental studies.2,23,42 Cynomolgus macaques are found south of the subtropical and temperate geographic distributions of rhesus macaques, in the south and southeast Indo-Malayan regions.8,10The 2 species share a common ancestor that lived 1 to 2 million years ago.3,13,25 This ancestral population of rhesus macaques diverged from a fascicularis-like ancestor shared in common with both rhesus and cynomolgus macaques after cynomolgus macaques expanded from their homeland in Indonesia.36 For this reason, genetic markers present in Indian rhesus macaques are either highly derived or are conserved as ancestral markers shared with Chinese rhesus macaques. The interspecific boundaries of rhesus and cynomolgus macaques are delineated by a narrow zone of parapatry in northern Indochina,7,8,10 within which male-biased gene flow37,39 and relatively high, but highly variable, levels of introgression of genes32 have occurred from rhesus to cynomolgus macaque groups.37,39 Because cynomolgus macaques originated in Indonesia36 and because rhesus macaques probably diverged from cynomolgus macaques in southwestern China,11 genetic markers shared between Indonesian cynomolgus macaques and Chinese rhesus macaques comprise a unique set of markers that are conserved in both macaque species.The wide assortment of morphometric differences8,9 and the broad geographic distribution of these 2 macaque species foster an expectation of high genetic diversity within and between them that could be exploited for mapping genes responsible for phenotypic differences between taxa. A better understanding of linkage disequilibrium (LD) in these nonhuman primate species can lead to a more informed selection of study subjects for, and more efficient conduct of, genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of particular diseases that macaques share in common with humans. LD is the nonrandom association of alleles at 2 or more adjacent loci that descend from single, ancestral chromosomes.29 LD plays a critical role in gene mapping, both as a tool for fine mapping of complex disease genes and in GWAS-based approaches. GWAS facilitate the identification of genes associated with complex and common traits or diseases by examining LD estimates among large numbers of common genetic variants, typically single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), between pairs of different groups of subjects to determine whether any variant is associated with a trait or disease of interest. LD data make tightly linked variants strongly correlated to produce successful association studies. For instance, LD reduces the number of markers and sample size of study subjects required to map genes influencing phenotypes to the genome because markers in LD are linked and inherited together.13 In addition, differences in LD can be used to identify orthologs for detecting the signatures of selective sweeps,21 as defined by dN/dS ratios obtained through the McDonald–Kreitman neutrality test.24 Furthermore, LD assessments can provide a more complete understanding of genome structure by defining the boundaries of haplotype blocks, within which recombination is rare or absent and which are separated by recombination ‘hotspots,’ in genomes.43Evidence from a study based on 1476 SNPs identified in ENCODE regions of the Indian rhesus macaque genome13 indicated that the rate of LD decay is higher in Chinese than in Indian rhesus macaques due to an hypothesized genetic bottleneck experienced by Indian rhesus macaques after diverging from the eastern subspecies, and, therefore, that Indian rhesus macaques, having higher LD, may be more useful for GWAS than Chinese rhesus macaques. In that study,13 only 33% of the SNPs were shared in common between the 2 subspecies, with Chinese rhesus macaques contributing to more than 60% of the remaining rhesus SNPs. Conversely, another study41 reported a slower rate of decay of LD in 25 Chinese than in 25 Indian rhesus macaques on the basis of 4040 SNPs, only 2% of which fell in coding regions, but 68% of those SNPs were shared between the 2 subspecies, with Indian rhesus macaques contributing almost 60% of the remaining SNPs. The marked disparity between the 2 studies in the proportions of shared SNPs used, the subspecies with the most genetic diversity, the sample size of Chinese rhesus macaques, the proportions of SNPs located in or near coding regions that are subject to functional constraints, and the greater disparity in LD decay between the 2 subspecies of rhesus macaques might reflect biases in either or both studies. For example, the use of markers whose frequencies are uncharacteristically low in one subspecies relative to the other can underestimate the rate of LD decay because lower frequency alleles, on average, are younger and have experienced less time for recombination.26 To avoid the influence of such ascertainment biases, comparisons of LD between 2 taxa should involve only SNPs conserved in both taxa. Moreover, because 2 points do not provide a phylogenetic or cladistic analysis to assign specific SNPs to origin on one phylogenetic line or another, comparing just the Indian and Chinese rhesus macaques without an additional primate taxon makes it is difficult to establish polarity and distinguish between derived and conserved SNPs. This limitation likely led to the contradictory conclusions of the 2 previously cited studies13,41 regarding the rate of LD decay in Chinese and Indian rhesus macaques.Because rhesus and cynomolgus macaques share a common fascicularis-like ancestor, a comparison of heterospecific SNPs among cynomolgus, Indian rhesus, and Chinese rhesus macaques would likely be fundamental to inferences regarding genome-wide LD estimates. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the conclusions of previous studies13,41 by using our panel of 1781 autosomal SNPs that are conserved in both rhesus and cynomolgus macaques to estimate the rates at which genome-wide LD decays in Indian and Chinese rhesus macaques and cynomolgus macaques, the species ancestral to rhesus macaques, and to evaluate the suitability of these populations for GWAS.  相似文献

The factors that regulate male aggressive behavior towards females during the mating season and their relationship to the sexual behavior of Japanese monkeys were investigated. Observations were made on the Shiga A troop in Nagano Prefecture for 132 days during both the non-mating and mating seasons in three successive years. As a result, chasing towards females was observed in males older than 4 years. The frequencies of this type of behavior increased in the mating season. The chasing rank of the individual males did not correlate with the male dominance rank but with the tree-shaking rank. Chasing was directed not only at estrous females but also at non-estrous females. Pairs of both sexes in which chasing was observed, tended to have sexual interactions. Both hormonal and social factors should be considered in the regulation of chasing. The role of aggression in the formation of new male-female bonds in discussed.  相似文献

We recently reported (Michael & Zumpe: American Journal of Primatology 15:157–170, 1988) evidence for the hypothesis that copulations by pairs of rhesus monkeys are linked more closely to the ovulatory phase of the female's menstrual cycle when a male has access to several females in different cycle phases rather than access to females in the same cycle phase. We have now used data from this earlier study to assess the role of female dominance. Artificial menstrual cycles were induced with hormone injections in two of four ovariectomized females in eight social groups (each consisting of one male and four females). The artificial cycles were either synchronized or offset by 7-day increments. There were differences in the behavioral interactions of the higher-ranking (dominant) and lower-ranking (subordinate) hormone-treated females in each group. The amount of male sexual activity received by dominant and subordinate females differed little, but dominant females initiated significantly more sexual activity (P<.0001) than did subordinate females. Dominant females were significantly more aggressive (P<.0001) toward other females and received more direct and redirected aggression from males. Males generally initiated and maintained more social contacts with dominant than with subordinate females, and dominant females were less active than subordinates in initiating and maintaining social interactions with males. The findings provide new evidence for both female mate competition and mate choice by males for higher-ranking females.  相似文献

Teeth-baring in a large captive rhesus monkey group (Macaca mulatta) was observed over a 30-month period. Its directional consistency among adults was significantly higher than that of aggression. The unidirectionality was so extreme that the facial display must be seen as a formal status indicator; ie, a signal of which the direction is independent of short-term contextual variation. As such, it seems adapted for communication about the state of the relationship. Formal dominance relationships among adults could be arranged in a hierarchy which approached perfect linearity. Focal observations demonstrated that teeth-baring was associated with withdrawal. It was uncommon among foraging monkeys, perhaps because dominant animals paid less attention to their subordinates in this context. The speed of rank acquisition by young females, in terms of received teeth-baring, was highest among peers and lowest against the group's old matriarchs. The age at which dominance over unrelated adult females was achieved correlated negatively with the amount of affiliative contact with these females. This translates into a positive correlation between bonding and rank establishment, indicating that dominance processes may be indistinguishable from social integration.  相似文献

A longitudinal study of the palatal growth of 80 male and 81 femaleMacaca nemestrina reveals that male growth rates are greater than female growth rates. In addition, both sexes demonstrate a similar pattern of palatal growth although growth rate differences between sexes probably reflect the larger canine/P3 apparatus and overall body size of males. Growth of the premaxillary and postmaxillary palatal segments appear to be independent of one another. Palatal growth spurts, obvious in males, exist for two palatal length dimensions. The maxillary tuberosity growth center is postulated to account for more size dimorphism between sexes than the premaxilla growth center.  相似文献
