Mortality of eggs during incubation was estimated for three ocypodid crabs,Scopimera globosa, Ilyoplax pusillus andMacrophthalmus japonicus, and the influence of incubation sites was discussed. These crabs all lived in isolated burrows and fed on sediments during day time low tide.S. globosa andI. pusillus inhabited the upper intertidal sandflats, whereasM. japonicus inhabited the lower intertidal mudflats. Females of bothS. globosa andI. pusillus remained in their plugged burrows without feeding throughout incubation and the mortality of eggs was low despite large broods relative to body size. On the other hand, females ofM. japonicus fed actively on surface mud during incubation and the mortality of eggs was high despiite small broods relative to body size. InS. globosa andI. pusillus, the ovaries of ovigerous females were small until egg-hatching, whereas inM. japonicus, the ovaries grew rapidly during incubation and females were able to produce consecutive broods. I conclude that incubation of eggs in burrows may be advantageous in species which inhabit the upper interidal sandflats, even though the crabs cannot forage during incubation, since otherwise their eggs would be exposed to strong heat stress and desication during the summer. Furthermore, such species may produce few large broods because of less frequent interruption of feeding than that associated with production of many small broods.  相似文献

On sedimentary tidal flats near the island of Sylt (German Bight, North Sea) abundance and size distribution of periwinkles, Littorina littorea L., were studied in low intertidal and in shallow and deep subtidal mussel beds (Mytilus edulis L.). In low intertidal mussel beds, surveys revealed that high densities (1,369±571 m–2) of juvenile snails (≤13 mm) were positively correlated with strong barnacle epigrowth (Semibalanus balanoides L. and Balanus crenatus Bruguière) on mussels. A subsequent field experiment showed that recruitment of L. littorea was restricted to the intertidal zone. Abundances of periwinkles (213±114 m–2) and barnacles abruptly decreased in the adjacent shallow subtidal zone, which served as a habitat for older snails (>13 mm). L. littorea was completely absent from disjunct deep (5 m) subtidal mussel beds. Snail abundance varied seasonally with maxima of >4,000 m–2 in low intertidal mussel beds in October and minima in July, just before the onset of new recruitment. I suggest that the presence of cracks and crevices among the dense barnacle overgrowth in intertidal mussel beds favoured recruitment and survival of juvenile snails. Larger (older) specimens are assumed to actively migrate to the less favourable adjacent subtidal. In the intertidal mud crabMacrophthalmus japonicus, most large crabs occurred in the upper sandy areas. Mechanisms of the size-dependent distribution were interpreted experimentally. In the lower muddy area, food was more abundant and crab density was much higher than in the upper area. Under the high density conditions, interaction among large crabs became severe and more large crabs abandoned their burrows. In the experiment on burrowing-site selection, large crabs burrowed only in the muddy side under the low density, but also in the sandy side under high density conditions. The burrowing in the upper sandy area may be advantageous for large crabs, though food availability is lower, because of less competition and higher survivorship under the low crab density.  相似文献

A relationship was sought between species distribution and seasonal change in the redox property of peat in a floating mat in Mizorogaike Pond, central Japan. The mat surface experienced an annual submergence-emergence cycle due to its sinking-rising movement. Redox potential (Eh) of the surface peat showed little difference between communities in the mat in the submergence season (January–June) and early emergence season (July–August). However variation in Eh among communities was clear in the late emergence season (September–December). Among seven communities in the floating mat, theMenyanthes trifoliata-Rhynchospora fauriei, M. trifoliata-Eriocaulon sikokianum-E. bondoense f.pilosum, Sphagnum cuspidatum andM. trifoliata-Carex thunbergii communities had high Eh (400–600 mV) in the late emergence season, while theMenyanthes trifoliata andPhragmites australis-M. trifoliata communities had lower Eh (200–400 mV). TheM. trifoliata-Isachné globosa community was intermediate (300–500 mV). The earlier the emergence of the peat surface began, the higher the Eh became in the late emergence season.  相似文献

Humulus japonicus in communities of Miscanthus sacchariflorus and Phragmites australis can grow large enough to overtop other species in the Amsa-dong floodplain. Because of strong winds and the weight of Humulus, plants of M. sacchariflorus and P. australis fell in mid-August and were subject to decomposition under its dense shading. To assess the effects of H. japonicus on nutrient cycling in these communities, we collected fresh samples of M. sacchariflorus and P. australis in litterbags and decomposed them under H. japonicus for 9 months, beginning in August. Biomass and organic contents from M. sacchariflorus during this incubation period were 49–51% and 44–48%, whereas those of P. australis were 49–61% and 32–52%, respectively. Their annual k values were 1.61–1.74 and 1.46–3.54, respectively. Initial N concentrations in M. sacchariflorus and P. australis were 13 and 20 mg g−1, while C:N ratios were 31 and 21, respectively. These results indicate that H. japonicus is responsible for the collapse of M. sacchariflorus and P. australis in August and also accelerates their nutrient cycling through rapid decomposition, thereby increasing nutrient circulation in floodplains.  相似文献

Japanese temperate bass Lateolabrax japonicus juveniles recruit to the surf zone and grow by feeding on commonly occurring coastal copepods. However, little is known about diel and tidal patterns in their migration and feeding habits. We sampled wild juveniles during the neap and spring tides, over periods of 24 h, with small seine nets in the sand flat of the eastern part of Ariake Bay, Kyushu, western Japan. In both the neap and spring tides, abundance of juveniles significantly increased during the daytime, being highest around the time of high tide. The relative gut fullness indices of juveniles drastically increased in the morning (0700–0900) and during the flood tide in the daytime, while major prey copepod (Paracalanus spp.) density in the ambient water was relatively constant. We summarized that L. japonicus juveniles would migrate to the surf zone after sunrise to feed on copepods, and then emigrate from the surf zone after sunset. The migratory behavior of L. japonicus juveniles would be influenced by light (daytime) and feeding activity influenced by both light (morning) and tidal condition (flood tide). The intertidal region of the tidal flat was recognized to be one of the important habitats for L. japonicus during their early life history.  相似文献

In an attempt to test predictions of the optimisation hypothesis of life history traits in birds, we estimated fitness consequences of brood size manipulations. Experiments were carried out over a period of 4 years in a Mediterranean population of blue tits Parus caeruleus which is confronted with a particular set of environmental constraints. Effects of brood size manipulation were investigated in relation to year-to-year variation in environmental conditions, especially caterpillar abundance. There was a strong variation in the effects of brood size manipulation depending on year. Most effects were on offspring quality (fledging mass, tarsus length). The absolute number of recruits did not significantly differ among categories (reduced, control, enlarged broods) but varied considerably among years. Females recruited from enlarged broods were of lower quality, started to breed later and laid fewer eggs than those recruited from control and reduced broods. Neither parental survival nor reproductive performances of adults in year n + 1 was affected by brood size manipulation in year n. Thus there was no evidence for a cost of reproduction in this population. Since the number of recruits did not depend on brood size manipulation (recruitment rates were higher in reduced broods), but recruits from reduced broods were of better quality compared with other groups, we conclude that adults lay a clutch that is larger than that which is predicted by the optimisation hypothesis. Producing more young could incur some penalties because offspring from large broods are of lower quality and less likely to recruit in the population. Background: Pityriasis versicolor (PV) is a superficial infection of the stratum corneum caused by Malassezia species. Eleven species have been identified within this genus, namely M. globosa, M. restricta, M. sympodialis, M. furfur, M. obtusa, M. slooffiae, M. pachydermatis, M. dermatis, M. japonica, M. yamatoensis, M. nana. M. furfur has long been identified as the causative fungus of PV. However, recent studies using the culture and isolation identified by morphological and physiological characteristics suggest that M. globosa is the causative agent of PV. Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine the distribution of PV microorganisms with a molecular-based non-culture method. Patients: The subjects were 49 patients with PV (32 males, 17 females; 16–83 years old) who visited our outpatient clinic. Methods: Samples were taken from lesions for direct microscopy with methylene blue and detected Malassezia species without M. pachydermatis and M. nana using a non-culture-based method consisting of nested PCR with specific primers. Results: The most frequently isolated species were M. globosa and M. restricta (both 93.9%). Only M. globosa was detected from the lesion in which the mycelial form alone was observed microscopically, but M. restricta was not. Conclusions: Our results suggest that M. globosa is the causative agent of PV.  相似文献

The food and feeding behavior of the suctorial nemerteanTortus tokmakovae Chernyshev, 1991, inhabiting the intertidal zone of Peter the Great Bay are studied. Laboratory observations show that this tortus is capable of attacking and consuming 6 species of amphipods, Mysidae gen. sp. mysids andPandalus sp. shrimps. Moreover, the tortuses suck the tissues of various dead crustaceans. Several tortuses may together attack and consume one amphipod. The yellow clam Mesodesma mactroides (Bivalvia: Mesodesmatidae) was once the most abundant intertidal species on the Atlantic coast of northern Argentina and an important commercial resource in South America. This study of a population inhabiting the intertidal zone of the sheltered-dissipative sandy beach Santa Teresita documents the species’ population biology, including demographic structure, growth and production during December 2004 and December 2006, and adumbrates the critical state of M. mactroides at present. A total of 3,015 M. mactroides were collected and measured, whereas individuals were found with an anterior–posterior shell length between 2 and 64 mm. A von Bertalanffy growth function with an asymptotic length (L ) of 85 mm and a growth constant (K) of 0.47 year−1 was established from length–frequency distributions. The longevity of the species is estimated at approximately 6 years, and instantaneous mortality rate was about three times higher than 40 years ago. Besides, this study confirmed that the overall growth performance index (OGP) is habitat-specific and can be used to group M. mactroides and M. donacium from different areas into temperate and upwelling species. Furthermore, OGP is inversely correlated with the latitudinal distribution of Mesodesma populations. The intertidal biomass ranged between 0.06 and 0.07 g AFDM m−2 year−1. Individual production was observed to be highest at 47 mm length (0.35 g AFDM m−2 year−1), and annual production ranged between 0.12 and 0.19 g AFDM m−2 year−1, resulting in productivity values (P/B) between 1.84 and 2.93. The comparison of the results of the present study with those of growth studies conducted on M. mactroides 40 years ago revealed the following considerable differences in the population structure of M. mactroides, indicating the conservation status of this intertidal bivalve as endangered: (1) present growth rates are faster, but that the maximum length attained has decreased, (2) the numbers of individuals per square metre were many times higher in the past than in the present, (3) bivalves from the present work never reached the ‘commercial size’ of 60 mm and (4) 40 years ago, the population of M. mactroides was composed of up to three cohorts, whereas in this study, there was only one single cohort visible.  相似文献

We examined the content of the coelenteron of Oulactis orientalis, Cnidopus japonicus, and Aulactinia sp. (family Actiniidae) inhabiting the intertidal area of Shikotan and Kunashir Islands (South Kuril Islands). The feeding characteristics (food spectrum, the index of filling of the coelenteron, the index of food similarity of the species, occurrence frequency, the index of trophic importance, and the proportions of certain components in the food pellet) allowed us to determine that the examined species are euryphagous.  相似文献

The population dynamics ofMazus japonicus andM. Miquelii was compared. In contrast with the summer annual growth habit (Vandellia crustacea) and the winter one(Veronica persica), M. japonicus had a “year-long annual growth habit” as the population of this species existed all year-round, notwithstanding that each individual of the population germinated and died within a year. TwoMazus species were sympatric on the levee of a rice paddy field where many other species were thickly grown. Those two species were difficult to propagate there, because their seeds, which were light germinators, could hardly germinate in the shade of other plants, or even if germination was possible, their seedlings may have soon died. However, asM. Miquelii, a perennial species, was able to reproduce by stolon vegetatively, it was a dominant species on the levee. On the contrary, the population density ofM. japonicus was thicker in the abandoned paddy field and an upland field than that ofM. Miquelii, because seeds of the former germinated under a greater variety of temperatures and under conditions of less soil moisture than those of the latter. These observations present an example of the fact that the difference of the reproductive strategy in annual and perennial plants has a striking effect on the population dynamics in the sympatric habitat.  相似文献

The life cycles of four amphipod species—Gammarus insensibilis, Dexamine spinosa, Microdeutopus gryllotalpa andCorophium insidiosum—were studied in the brackish-water lagoon Mazoma of the Amvrakikos Gulf, Ionian Sea.G. insensibilis has an annual life cycle with limited recruitment over the year and maximum reproductive activity in the winter months.D. spinosa exhibits continuous recruitment in the lagoon with a maximum in summer. Both species produce a single brood per female per yer. Continuous recruitment was observed during the summer months forM. gryllotalpa andC. insidiosum, and multiple breeding per female per year. Sex ratios varied considerably over the year, with a persisting preponderance of the females.  相似文献

Cyrtograpsus angulatus andChasmagnathus granulata (Grapsidae) are the two dominant decapod crustacean species in the outer parts of Mar Chiquita Lagoon, the southernmost in a series of coastal lagoons that occur along the temperate Atlantic coasts of South America. Distribution and habitat preferences (water and sediment type) in these crab species were studied in late spring. There is evidence of ontogenetic changes in habitat selection of both species. Recruitment ofC. angulatus takes place mainly in crevices of tube-building polychaete (Ficopomatus enigmaticus) “reefs” and, to a lesser extent, also in other protected microhabitats (under stones). In the latter, mostly somewhat larger juveniles were found, suggesting that these are used as a refuge for growing individuals. Adults are most frequently found on unprotected muddy and sandy beaches.C. angulatus was found in all parts of Mar Chiquita Lagoon, including freshwater, brackish, and marine habitats.C. granulata, in contrast, was restricted to the lower parts of the lagoon, where brackish water predominates and freshwater or marine conditions occur only exceptionally. It showed highest population density on “dry mud” flats and inSpartina densiflora grassland, where it can build stable burrows and where high contents of organic matter occur in the sediment. Such habitats are characterized by mixed populations of juveniles (including newly settled recruits) and adults, males and females (including a high percentage of ovigerous). Unstable “wet mud” as well as stony sand were found to be inhabited by chiefly adult populations, with only few ovigerous females. In “dry mud” flats, the proportion of males increased vertically with increasing level in the intertidal zone, showing a significantly increasing trend also in their average body size. These observations may be explained by higher resistance of males, in particular of large individuals, to desiccation, salinity, and temperature stress occurring in the upper intertidal. However, an opposite, or no such, tendency was found in the distribution of ovigerous and non-ovigerous females, respectively. With increasing distance from the water edge, salinity increased and pH decreased significantly inC. granulata burrows, whereas temperature showed no consistent tendency within the intertidal gradient. A highly significant linear relationship (r=−0.794; P<0.001) between salinity and pH in water from crab burrows is described. This regression line is significantly different from one that had been observed in water from the lagoon, indicating consistently lower pH values at any salinity level in burrow water. This is interpreted as a result of crab and/or microbial respiration.  相似文献

Reproductive traits of the mud crab Macrophthalmus banzai were compared in populations from Okinawa (26°13′ N) and Amakusa (32°32′ N). Crabs matured earlier and at a smaller size in Okinawa than in Amakusa, but growth rate did not differ between the two localities. Population density was much higher in Okinawa. Breeding occurred in winter in Okinawa and in summer in Amakusa. In Okinawa, females produced one brood at over 1 year of age and then died. In Amakusa, females produced one brood at over 1 year of age, and one or two broods at around 2 years of age, and then died. Egg weight in the Okinawa population was almost twice that of the Amakusa population. Furthermore, brood weight was larger in Okinawa than in Amakusa. Longevity was 16–19 months in Okinawa and 28–30 months in Amakusa. At high latitudes, the winter low temperature blocks reproduction of M. banzai. At low temperature blocks reproduction of M. banzai. At low latitudes, their short lifespan prevents iterative breeding. Thus, the difference in breeding season greatly affects other life-history traits.  相似文献

In 1997 and 1998, surveys were performed to compare species composition, abundance and diversity of non-attached epifauna (>1 mm) in low intertidal and adjacent shallow subtidal zones of three mussel beds (Mytilus edulis L.) near the island of Sylt in the North Sea. The community structure was similar when compared within tidal zones: no significant differences in species numbers and abundances were recorded between locations and between years. A comparison between tidal zones, however, revealed higher diversity, species densities and total species numbers in the subtidal (per 1,000 cm2: H =2.0±0.16; 12 ±1 species density; 22 species) than the intertidal zone (per 1,000 cm2: H =0.7±0.27; 6±2 species density; 19 species). Abundances significantly dropped with increasing submergence from 2,052 (±468) m–2 to 1,184 (±475) m–2. This was mainly due to significantly higher densities of both juvenile periwinkles, Littorina littorea, and crabs, Carcinus maenas, in intertidal mussel beds. However, many less dominant species were significantly more abundant in subtidal mussel beds. This study revealed that in the non-attached epifaunal community of mussel beds the tidal level effect within metres was strong, whilst the spatial variability in a much wider (kilometre) range but the same tidal level was negligible. The high epifaunal diversity in the subtidal zone suggests that the protective measures for mussel beds against the effects of mussel fishery should be extended from the intertidal to the subtidal zone, if the integrity of the mussel bed community in the Wadden Sea National Park is to be maintained. The monkeys on the island of Sulawesi (Celebes), Indonesia, comprise seven species ofMacaca, that isM. maura, M. tonkeana, M. hecki, M. nigrescens, M. nigra, M. ochreata, andM. brunnescens. Hemoglobins from 248 individuals of these seven species were analyzed by isoelectric focusing electrophoresis (IEFE) and by starch gel electrophoresis in the presence of urea (USGE). Eighteen phenotypes consisting of eight molecular types were identified by IEFE analysis. The speciestonkeana inhabiting the central part of the island revealed 11 phenotypes, while peripheral species such asnigrescens andbrunnescens carried only 3 and 2 phenotypes, respectively. On USGE, three α chains and three β chains were identified and named α1, α2, and α6, and β1, β3, and β5, respectively. The α1 chain has the same mobility as the α chains of other macaques, while the α2 chain is less positively charged than α1, and α6 is the least positive among these α chains. The α2 chain is widely distributed in the Sulawesi macaques as the major component. Four species,ochreata, tonkeana, maura, andnigrescens, carried the α1 and α6 chains as minor components. The electrophoretic mobility of β1 was the same as that of other macaques, while β3 and β5 were more positively charged and less positively charged than β1, respectively. All of the Sulawesi species had β3 in high or low gene frequencies and inmaura, tonkeana, andbrunnescens, this type was most abundant. β5 chain existed in the species of the northern peninsula, as the major type. The subordinate type was β3 innigra andnigrescens and β1 inhecki. On the other hand, β1 was most frequently observed inochreata.  相似文献

ECOLOGY AND EVOLUTION OF MATING SYSTEMS OF FIDDLER CRABS (GENUS UCA)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
1. General accounts of the natural history and behaviour of fiddler crabs suggest there exist two broad mating patterns in the genus. Most western and Indo-Pacific species mate on the surface of intertidal substrates near burrows females defend. The sexes associate only briefly during courtship and mating. In contrast, males of many American species court from and defend burrows to which females come for mating. Copulation occurs underground in burrows plugged at the surface; the sexes usually remain together for at least several hours. Here we summarize and contrast recent detailed field studies of the mating systems of U. pugilator, an American species, and U. vocans, a species widely distributed in the western and Indo-Pacific. We indicate how differences in the breeding ecology of these two species may account for basic differences in modes of sexual selection leading to the two broad mating patterns in the genus. 2. U. pugilator burrows in protected sandy substrates in the upper intertidal and supratidal zone. During ebb tide, nonbreeding crabs leave burrows they occupy during high tide to forage on food-rich substrates in the lower intertidal zone. Reproductively active males remain in the burrow zone where they fight for and defend burrows from which they court. Large males win most fights for burrows and tend to defend burrows high on the elevation gradient, especially during periods with relatively high tides. Females usually approach and descend the burrows of several males before choosing their mates by remaining in males' burrows. Males remain underground with their mates for 1–3 days until after they oviposit their eggs. Some males then emerge and leave their burrows while others sequester their mates in the chambers where mating and oviposition has occurred, dig new chambers and resume courtship, perhaps attracting additional females. In either case, females remain underground for approximately 2 weeks, finally emerging to release their planktonic larvae. Burrows that do not collapse due to tidal inundation or flooding by groundwater are best for breeding and usually are located relatively high on the elevation gradient. Females choose mates indirectly by preferring to breed in burrows that will remain intact while they oviposit and incubate their eggs. Large males mate more often than small males because they are better able to defend burrows at locations females prefer to breed. The mating system of U. pugilator may be classified as resource-defence polygyny. 3. U. vocans burrows in open muddy substrates in the mid- to lower intertidal zone. At a site near Chunda Bay, Australia, where the reproductive behaviour of this species has been studied in depth, both sexes feed near burrows they defend. Females tend to occupy their burrows for longer periods and move shorter distances than do males. Mating occurs on the surface near the burrows that females defend. Females accept both resident and wandering males as mates. They show no preference for mating with larger males. Female choice may be based on other male morphological or behavioural characteristics. Females oviposit their eggs either while on the surface or in their burrows. They produce relatively small clutches and are active on the surface throughout their breeding periods. Males fight both their neighbours and wandering males. Large males tend to win fights and defend burrows in areas where large females, which produce relatively many eggs, are most dense. Such areas may offer greater protection from predators than areas occupied by smaller females. Small males mate about as often as large males but may father fewer larvae. The mating system of U. vocans is resource-free and promiscuous. 4. The mating systems of U. pugilator and U. vocans differ fundamentally in that female U. pugilator require access to a specific microenvironment to breed successfully, while female U. vocans do not. We suggest this difference occurs because of contrasts in clutch sizes and the mobility and movement patterns of feeding females. Female U. pugilator produce relatively large clutches and probably experience more intense selection from factors that can cause egg loss and mortality than do U. oocans, which produce clutches of sufficiently small volume to be protected by their abdominal flaps. Hence, the range of suitable breeding environments for U. pugilator is small compared to that for U. vocans. In addition, U. pugilator burrows in areas that are relatively food-poor, leading to daily migrations to and from food-rich substrates in the lower intertidal zone, preventing female defence of an area suitable for both breeding and feeding. U. vocans, however, burrows in areas sufficiently rich to support feeding, leading to relatively low female mobility and defence of burrows that are also suitable breeding sites. 5. Adaptive radiation of the genus Uca in the Americas is manifest by trends toward smaller adult size, higher population densities, more frequent microgeographic sympatry and increased terrestriality, compared to species in the western and Indo-Pacific regions. We outline the general features of the selection mechanisms tying each of these trends to the evolution of resource—defence mating systems. Intraspecific variation in the courtship behaviour and site of mating in U. lactea and U. vocans supports our contention that resourse—defence behaviour tends to occur at high population densities. Additional data are needed to evaluate the other hypotheses critically.  相似文献

Two species of the holocentrid fish genusMyripristis are described as new from Japan, both with a single pair of tooth patches outside the gape at tip of lower jaw, the third anal spine longer than the fourth, and 28–29 lateral-line scales:M. kochiensis from Kashiwa-jima, Kochi Prefecture, previously misidentified asM. murdjan, is distinct in having small scales in axil of pectoral fins, 32–36 gill rakers, interorbital space 4.45–5.1 in head, and lower jaw not strongly projecting when mouth closed;M. greenfieldi, from the Ryukyu Islands and Ogasawara Islands to Kochi Prefecture, previously misidentified asM. woodsi andM. randalli, is distinct in lacking scales in the pectoral axil, having 35–52 cteni on largest body scales, 43–47 gill rakers, and longest dorsal spine 2.0–2.25 in head.  相似文献
